When you think about the month of September do Labor Day celebrations and the beginning of fall come to mind? There is a lot more to September than a late summer holiday and the promise of cooler weather. There are several monthly observances, many famous people celebrate their birthday in September, and many historic events took place during the ninth month of the year. September comes from the Latin words septem, meaning seven and septimus, meaning seventh. In ancient Rome, September was the seventh month of the year. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted, it became the ninth month of the year. It is one of the four months with thirty days. The birthstone for September is the sapphire which symbolizes heaven. Sapphire comes from the mineral Corundum. Most people think of the color blue when the word sapphire is mentioned, but sapphire comes in many other colors including green, pink, purple, and yellow. The flower for the month of September is the aster which symbolizes love. It also stands for daintiness and patience. The aster is a well known autumn flower along with its close relative, the chrysanthemum. Virgo and Libra are the astrological signs for September. Birthdays st
from September 1 through the 22nd fall under the sign of Virgo. September 23rd through the 30th birthdays fall under the sign of Libra.

September Holidays and Observances Labor Day is the most well known holiday in September. It is observed every year on the first Monday in September. Grandparent's Day is observed in the United States on the first Sunday after Labor Day. In the northern hemisphere, the Autumn Equinox occurs and fall begins. This takes place on September 22nd or 23rd, depending on the year.
Historic Events in September Many major events happened during the ninth month of the year. Here are a few historical events that took place in September. Continental Congress changed the name of the United Colonies to the United States on September 9, 1776. President William McKinley was shot on September 6, 1901 while attending the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition in New York. He passed away eight days later on September 14, 1901. The United States was attacked by terrorists on September 11, 2001. Almost 3,000 people in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington DC died because of the attacks that took place on that day.
Monthly Observances There are over thirty monthly observances during the month of September. Some of them are listed below. Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month
Apple Month
Cholesterol Education Month
Little League Month
Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
School Success Month

Worry My forgetter's getting better, But my rememberer is broke To you that may seem funny But, to me, that is no joke For when I'm 'here' I'm wondering If I really should be 'there' And, when I try to think it through, I haven't got a prayer! Oft times I walk into a room, Say 'what am I here for?' I wrack my brain, but all in vain! A zero, is my score. At times I put something away Where it is safe, but, Gee! The person it is safest from Is, generally, me! When shopping I may see someone, Say 'Hi' and have a chat, Then, when the person walks away I ask myself, 'who the heck was that? Yes, my forgetter's getting better While my rememberer is broke, And it's driving me plumb crazy And that isn't any joke. CAN YOU RELATE??? LIVE, LOVE & LAUGH A LOT

In Memoriam
Our condolences to the family and friends of: Dean Cramer in the loss of his brother ____________________________________________________________ Sometimes the words "Thank you" just doesn't seem to be enough. Following the passing of my mother (some of you remember her from her short time as a LHV resident), we received many kind words of condolence, flowers and kind words of support. Losing a loved one is so difficult. Losing a loved one to dementia is truly experiencing a very long good-bye. Thank you all for being such caring and supportive friends and neighbors. Lori Johnsen and Jeff Hunt I wish to thank all the folks for their prayers, kind thoughts and well wishes during my time in the hospital. All is well now. Kay Levinson My family and myself want to thank all of our neighbors for their condolences and cards of sympathy on the passing of our beloved husband and father, Fred. It’s consoling to have friends at times like these. Again thanks, Judie Bott & Family "I want to thank all our friends of Lake Hammock Village for your prayers, calls, cards & food. Walter & I are truly blessed to have so many friends here." Cathy & Walter Thanks to Richard Gould, Mike Molnar and Richard Spiegel for fixing the flag pole in the pool area.

Working as a pediatric nurse, I had the difficult assignment of giving immunization shots to children... One day, I entered the examining room to give four-year-old Lizzie her needle. 'No, no, no!' she screamed. 'Lizzie,' scolded her mother, 'that's not polite behavior.' With that, the girl yelled even louder, 'No, thank you! No, thank you! ----------------------------------------------------------

Cool Facts
Only food that does not spoil: honey. Gold is about eight times heavier than any other metal on earth. George Custer was the youngest American officer ever to become a general in the United States Army. He made his rank at age 23. The 1st non-human to win an Oscar was Mickey Mouse. The human brain stops growing at the age of 18. Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair. A “jiffy” is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second. False teeth are often radioactive. Approximately 1 million Americans wear some form of denture; half of these dentures are made of porcelain compound laced with minute amounts of uranium to stimulate fluorescence. Without the uranium addictive the dentures would be a dull green color when seen under artificial light. The average woman spends 1 year of her lifetime trying to decide what to wear! The honeybee kills more people world-wide than all the poisonous snakes combined.

Ask the Nutritionist – Food Groups Question:
Question:
How much protein is recommended for an individual’s daily consumption and what are some meatless options?
I have been hearing a lot of talk about how bad wheat is for you. How can I get enough whole grains without eating wheat?
Answer: The U.S.D.A. recommends adults eat 5 to 7 ounces of protein foods daily, which most Americans either meet or exceed. Below is My Plate – which represents the recommendations for the five food groups.
Answer: Wheat has certainly been getting a bad reputation. The good news is that only a small part of the population cannot eat wheat, those with Celiac Disease.
Protein is found in meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs as well as nuts, seeds, beans, peas and soy products.
Celiac Disease affects about 1% of the population and those suffering from it are unable to properly digest gluten – a protein found in wheat, rye and barley.
1 ounce of protein foods is equal to: 1 ounce of lean meat 1 medium egg ¼ cup cooked beans or peas ½ ounce nuts or seeds 1 tablespoon of peanut butter
For the rest of us, a gluten-free diet offers no benefits. In fact, a glutenfree diet may even bring uninvited consequences, including nutritional deficiencies. In addition, there is no evidence that a gluten-free diet leads to weight loss.
For more information on protein choices and tips check out the following link: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/foodgroups/downloads/TenTips/DGTipsheet6Pro teinFoods.pdf
To determine if you should stop eating wheat, pay attention to how wheat products affect you (you can keep a food diary to keep track). If you feel you may have gluten intolerance, speak to your doctor. For more information check out the link below. http://www.webmd.com/digestivedisorders/celiac-disease/celiac-disease-topicoverview

It had to happen sooner or later.......................Blonde Men! A friend told the blond man: "Christmas is on a Friday this year." The blond man then said, "Let*s hope it's not the 13th." ---------------------------------------------------Two blond men find three grenades, and they decide to take them to a police station. One asked: "What if one explodes before we get there?" The other says: "We'll lie and say we only found two." --------------------------------------------------A woman phoned her blond neighbor man and said: "Close your curtains the next time you & your wife are having sex. The whole street was watching and laughing at you yesterday."To which the blond man replied:"Well the joke's on all of you because I wasn't even at home yesterday." --------------------------------------------------A blond man is in the bathroom and his wife shouts: "Did you find the shampoo?" He answers, "Yes, but I’m not sure what to do... it’s for dry hair, and I've just wet mine." --------------------------------------------------A blond man goes to the vet with his goldfish."I think its got epilepsy," he tells the vet. The vet takes a look and says, "It seems calm enough to me."The blond man says, "Wait, I haven't taken it out of the bowl yet." ---------------------------------------------------A blond man spies a letter lying on his doormat. It says on the envelope "DO NOT BEND.He spends the next 2 hours trying to figure out how to pick it up. ----------------------------------------------------A blond man shouts frantically into the phone. "My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!" "Is this her first child?" asks the doctor. "No," he shouts, "this is her husband!" ---------------------------------------------------A blond man was driving home, drunk as a skunk. Suddenly he has to swerve to avoid a tree, then another, then another. A cop car pulls him over, so he tells the cop about all the trees in the road. The cop says, "That's your air freshener swinging about!" -------------------------------------------------A blond man's dog goes missing and he is frantic. His wife says, "Why don't you put an ad in the paper?" He does, but two weeks later the dog is still missing. "What did you put in the paper?" his wife asks. "Here boy!" he replies. ---------------------------------------------------A blond man is in jail. The guard looks in his cell and sees him hanging by his feet. "Just WHAT are you doing?" he asks. "Hanging myself," the blond replies. "It should be around your neck," says the guard. "I tried that," he replies, "but then I couldn't breathe." ------------------------------------------------------
24
(This one actually makes sense...sort of...lol) An Italian tourist asks a blond man: "Why do scuba divers always fall backwards off their boats? "To which the blond man replies: "If they fell forward, they'd still be in the boat." -----------------------------------------------A few minutes before the church services started, the congregation was sitting in their pews and talking. Suddenly, Satan appeared at the front of the church. Everyone started screaming and running for the front entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate. Soon the church was empty except for one elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew without moving, seemingly oblivious to the fact that God's ultimate enemy was in his presence. So Satan walked up to the man and said, 'Do you know who I am? The man replied, 'Yep, sure do.' 'Aren't you afraid of me?' Satan asked. 'Nope, sure ain't.' said the man. 'Don't you realize I can kill you with one word?' asked Satan. 'Don't doubt it for a minute,' returned the old man, in an even tone. 'Did you know that I can cause you profound, horrifying AGONY for all eternity?' persisted Satan. 'Yep,' was the calm reply. 'And you are still not afraid?' asked Satan. 'Nope,' said the old man. More than a little perturbed, Satan asked, 'Why aren't you afraid of me?' The man calmly replied, 'Been married to your sister for 48 years. '
