Thank you for your help. Please make all files a word document, so they can be edited to fit the layout of our newsletter. Files such as .pdf’s and .jpg’s will not work as they can not be edited. Again, I thank you for your cooperation. I would like to apologize as you can clearly see some of the content does not look very clean, this is because much of the information had to be scanned. YOGA IS COMING! I am happy we have Clubhouse Uplifting Yoga on the calendar for every Sunday from March 25th to April 29, from 3-4:30. 3-3:30 is in the chairs; 3:30-4:30 on the floor, by donation. No one turned away. I think it would be wise to put the draft of your new directory out for a few weeks, for people to review and correct. Perhaps leave on a table in Clubhouse, put a note in the outdoor bulletin board, telling folks to check their data?? Just a suggestion. Thanks, Bethany PS Any date or time changes will be posted on the bulletin board

Country Night King and Queen

Enjoying Country Night!!

Meet Your Neighbor OWL is blessed to have a Master Carpenter in the Park, snowbird David Thurber on Oldfield. Dave recently made a sturdy, weatherproof bench for the new Dog Park. He also gifted the Clubhouse with a large, one of a kind tray he made for dinners and special events. Constructed without any hardware, only glue, the tray is made of multicolored woods. Dave is famous for his trellises, small tables, walls, cupboards, bookshelves and custom built ins. Recently, he made a pill bottle rack, making it easier for his customer to keep track of their medications. Rumor has it, he loves special projects that keep him out of trouble. Both retired educators, Dave and wife Diane have wintered in the park for two years. They head back to Brownington, Vermont the end of this month where Dave plans to plant 3000 heads of lettuce. Seriously.

Diabetes Management Made Simple: The condition that doubles your risk for a stroke People who have type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to experience heart disease or stroke-even if it well managed. 65% of people with diabetes die of some form of cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association. If poorly managed , the risk is much higher, as uncontrolled blood sugar levels can damage the heart and veins. Type 2 diabetes is preventable. If you have diabetes, it’s extremely important to work with your health-care provider to manage your condition and reduce any other risk factors you may have. Properly controlled diabetes carries with it a reduced risk for many complications, so make diabetes prevention-and management-high on your priority list. Linda

Roger Greeley, A Man Of Many Interests and Talents Roger Greeley and his wife Kay of Kalamazoo, Michigan, are among OWL’s newest residents. Previously snowbirds who migrated further south to Anna Maria Island, the Greeleys decided in November to “take the leap” as they call it, and buy 7751 Lynbrook. “We came down to celebrate Thanksgiving with our daughter Beth and her husband, Thurmond,” they recall, “And the next thing we knew, we bought a place!” (Disclaimer….the author of this article is the same Beth mentioned here…. Bethany Greeley Knight.) Besides being a new resident, at age 88 Roger is the oldest military veteran living in the Park. Some say he may be the oldest OWL resident. He served as a US Marine in World War II for 4 years, surviving the II battle of Iwo Jima. A father of three, grandfather of 6 and great-grandfather to one (with another due in July), Roger has had many careers, including high school teacher, newspaper columnist, college gymnastics instructor and Unitarian Universalist minister and inventor. He suggested making non-alcoholic beer to chemists years before it was marketed, and was told such a beverage was impossible to produce! He also created a mute switch for his television, a decade before the mute button was invented. Roger is a published author, historian and most afternoons at Orangewood Lakes, the “Pool Crooner.” Walking and singing in the pool was recommended to him by his doctor, to keep his breathing strong and his joints limber. He has had a life long love of music, from classical to opera to the Big Bands. He started singing and acting as a young man, spending his 17th summer in Connecticut at a summer playhouse, where he appeared in shows with Buddy Ebson (who went on to become the famous Jed Clampett of the Beverly Hillbillies) and Art Carney. He was in the cast of “Emperor Jones,” starring the great Paul Robeson. Just last summer, Roger returned to the Ivoryton Playhouse, some 70 years after he first stepped on the stage. His grandson Elliot, an attorney practicing in New Haven, CT, arranged for the surprise visit to Ivoryton. As a minister serving the same church for nearly 30 years, Roger starred in many amateur musical productions; mostly parodies he helped write of well known musicals, such as Guys and Dolls, Camelot and the Sound of Music. Yet one more of Roger’s interests is his nearly 45 years of mentoring individuals and groups in a form of auto-hypnosis or suggestion that he calls Mind Over Matter or M.O.M.. Designed to help people conquer their toughest unwanted behaviors, such as smoking, over eating and falling asleep at the wheel, M.O.M. has helped hundreds and hundreds over the years. Roger has offered introductory talks in the Clubhouse on M.O.M. and is available by appointment. A Red Sox fan, Roger also roots for the Chicago Cubs, Green Pack Packers, Detroit Lions and Tigers. He has almost always had a dog; for the past 12 years, he and Kay have enjoyed the company of Surprise, (known as Sur) a mixed breed that looks most like a Finnish Spitz. Rog and Kay Greeley have traveled the US extensively, touring Alaska, Hawaii, Pearl Harbor, England, Russia, Norway, Finland, and most recently, Iceland, where he performed Elliot’s wedding in 2009. A native of Wisconsin, Roger graduated from Boston University and raised his family in Michigan. He and Kay, a retired teacher, live in Michigan during the mild weather months, where his two sons and their families also reside. Tim is a federal magistrate, married to school administrator Jan, father of two sons who are finishing law school and a daughter who teaches high school math in Minnesota. Will is a researcher with Archer Daniels Midland, married to hospital dietician Mary, with twin sons completing their first year of college this May. Beth is a writer and yoga teacher, married to violinmaker Thurmond and mother of Elliot. Saturday mornings, Roger can be found enjoying coffee and a plain donut at the Clubhouse. He misses the 5 cent donut of the 1950s, the 20 cent gallon of gas of the 1970s and the penny postcards of his youth. Stop by and talk with Rog about any of his vast interests. Pose a tough US history question or ask about a baseball statistic and witness his amazing memory!

Some Recent Clubhouse Activities!

Once again, OWL horse track manager Bob Tanguay of Greenlawn staged a Saturday Derby March 10, with six horses running their hearts out. Plenty of quarters flew through the air, with winners netting all they bet and sometimes more. Ontario Jockeys Joe Vallely and Wayne Jardine managed to control their powerful beasts race after race. The Betting Window was staffed by Lil Deschenes and Alan LeBoeuf. Bev Grimmett and Sheila McDermott handled Payouts. After nearly two hours of high stakes excitement, the crowd settled into a tasty pizza and soda lunch. The horses were returned to their boxes, until the next Extravaganza. GM Tanguay announced he cleared more than $170, between the races and the lunch, which was donated to the Club Account.

From The Managers Mike and I would like to thank you the community for allowing us a spot in your news letter. Wow a lot of great things going on here. Remember if you want to add to the news letter please contact Linda Newton or e-mail her at ( lnewt54@yahoo.com). Linda has volunteered to edit your news letter. We are working hard to get the letter into all of your hands, because it is your letter. DID YOUR DOG DO THE PAPERWORK? Yes even your pets have to keep up their records. To protect everyone’s health and safety, PLEASE make sure you present a copy of your pets proof of rabies vaccination to me in the Orangewood Lakes office. Dogs must be vaccinated every three years. Yes we are still handing out notices about cleaning yards and washing your homes. We’re not picking on anyone, we are just trying to improve our community. If you need help please contact Mike or I, and we will do what we can to assist you. Sincerely,

Mike and Cristy Simpson
