This is just a reminder that a lot of you will be leaving soon, so that means we will have a lot of vacant homes with no one taking care of them.

Find a person or contact the office for someone who can and will take care of your homes which means, the pulling of weeds, going to check in periodically to make sure there are no water leaks and if there is anything major happening they will let us know to contact you.

The following form should be filled out so we know who will be leaving and for whatever months you will be gone. Make sure the office gets this before you leave.

Did You Know Dumping in the RV Area is a NO-NO? Several people have been “seen” dumping leaves and other yard waste in the RV storage area behind the shed. For those of you who may not have noticed there is a big sign at the entrance to the RV storage area that reads “NO DUMPING ALLOWED”. So please do not dump your yard waste or anything else for that matter in this area. If you bag, bundle or put your waste in a trash can, Waste Services will pick it up when they come through on Wednesdays and Saturdays. If we are not filling our dumpster, then you may us it if you need to but we ask that you let us or Andrew know to make sure there is room.

Have You Looked at the North Side of Your House Lately?

We have noticed several homes turning green on the North side during our recent tour of the park. You may have already received a friendly reminder from us but if you haven’t and you want to avoid getting one, please take a look and see if you need to pressure wash your home. To help keep Southfork nongreen and clean, we have worked out an arrangement, like we did last year, with a pressure washing company where they will pressure wash your house, carport, driveway, awnings and screen porches for a flat rate of $55 per house. If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, please contact the office.

Did You See That Person or Car Behind You? We ask that when backing out of a parking spot or your driveway, that you take an extra look to make sure no one or nothing is behind you. We have been told about and have seen some “close calls” recently, especially at large functions near the clubhouse as people are leaving either in their cars or golf carts.

Do You Have Permission To Park There?

We have seen many cars parked in driveways of homes that are vacant, especially homes we have for sale. Remember you need the owner’s permission to park in their driveway.

We Still Have Some Speeders!

Please note that the speed limit is 15 mph throughout the park. Many of us can’t move as fast as we once could to get out of your way, so please slow down.

Last Chance To Get Your Yellow Pages!

There are still some (actually a lot) of yellow pages in the library. If you want a copy please come by and pick one up because they will be going away soon! We will be removing the bin and what’s left on the 15th so don’t wait too much longer.

from the Association President Dear Friends and Neighbors: February was a very busy month! Over 100 attended our very first Valentine Dinner Party. Elsie Rice and Ziggy Wielgoszynski were honored as our oldest residents. Also honored were Monty and Mary Bolin who have been married over 60 years.

Our Casino night was held on February 28th.

Thanks to the many, wonderful volunteers who helped make both evenings a great success.!!!!!

Speaking of wonderful volunteers see just a few listed below: 1. Mike Gallagher answered our appeal to become our new Treasurer.

2. Tom Robinson chaired his first pancake breakfast on Feb 4 with 101 in attendance………. His 2nd breakfast will be March 3rd. Hopefully, there will be more Southfork residents than Blue Jay. 3. Jim Mc Adams has arranged for AARP driving course on March 5 and 6.

4. Don and Cathy Thompson will hold their first “Wednesday’s by the Pool” on March 7th. The menu will be Hot dogs, Hamburgs, Chips and Sodas.

5. Marvin & Mary Jo Dye & John and Mary Kuehl will host the Annual Recycling Cook out on March 10.

Fruit Trees Remember, now that the fruit is just about gone, please pick any fruit off the ground that has fallen and rotting away, because the rodents love them and will tell their other relatives to visit for a feast.

Women’s Club On February 1st, 44 ladies met in the Clubhouse for their monthly meeting to a beautifully decorated room for Valentine’s Day. We welcomed our speaker, Luci Avila from “Love One Another” who gave a brief presentation on how the different churches and organizations meet weekly to feed the needy. It was very interesting and we gave a donation of $150.00 to help for their food cost.

The Minutes and Treasurers reports were read and approved.

Carol Albers is having her project on February 15th for making Adult Bibs for a local nursing home and she gave details on the project.

Carol Albers provided a game of entertainment and played old songs from the beginning of TV in 1945 and the 50’s. The ladies had to try and guess on which program that song theme was used such as, “Dragnet”, “I Love Lucy” and so on. It reminded us how fast the time goes by and we are not getting older but we are like a good bottle of wine, getting better with age.

We talked about our upcoming Chili supper and tickets are now on sale. As usual we should have a good time and we will also have a game of “Lets Make A Deal” which proves to be interesting. Don’t forget to buy your ticket and remember, it is a fundraiser, and when you do, you are helping someone in the community who are less fortunate then we are. The tickets are being sold by Diane Stricklen, Peggy Elkins and Marielle Quain.

On April 1st, we will be having another fundraiser , (Bunco) which is to “Support the Troops”. Please sign up and plan to attend because half of the money is going to the troops.

Thank you Tanya for the 5 bags that were raffled and the ladies enjoyed them very much.

The meeting was closed at 10:45am and the ladies were invited to a nice buffet prepared by our social committee: Carol Albers, Mary Jo Dye, Kathy Myers and Marge Otto.

Our next meeting will be on March 7th.

Annual Association Dues The annual Association Dues are now due for year 2012 and the amount due is $20.00. Contact Mike Gallagher, Treasurer or deliver to 11129 Maverick Dr or place dues payment in the Association Suggestion box in the lobby of the Clubhouse.

(Southfork Men's Club) The Southfork Men's Club met on February 2, for their regular monthly meeting with approximately eighty percent of the members in attendance.

The club's membership now stands at 33 and new members are always welcomed to join. According to the club by-laws you do not have to reside at Southfork to join.

Under old business, the main topic of discussion was to set the date for the annual shuffleboard tournament. Co-chairmen Bob Lynch and Pat Grossi announced that the tournament will be held on March 15 starting at 9AM. The tournament will consist of 16 ladies and 16 men with several alternates in case anyone cannot play at the last moment. Anyone wishing to sign-up to play, should put their name on the list in the clubhouse. The tournament will be sponsored by the Men's Club and partially funded by a generous donation from Citrus Motors located in Dade City. Citrus Motors is also scheduled to have several new automobiles on display at the tournament. Volunteers are also needed to help with the tournament and there is a sign-up sheet in the clubhouse foyer. As usual refreshments will be served for the players, on-lookers and fans.

Members of the community are encouraged to attend to act as cheerleaders to “cheer on� their favorite teams.

Pete Logoyda, club treasurer, announced that a memorial brick has been ordered, for placement in the memorial garden located at the local hospice, in memory of our fallen member and friend, John Enright.

Under new business a motion was made and approved for the men's club to donate $100 to the women's club to be used to help fund their upcoming chili dinner.

Member Jim Knight announced that he would chair a project to arrange for a baseball game in Lakeland. He stated that he would place information on the bulletin board in the clubhouse to see if anyone would be interested in going to see a game at Joker Marchant stadium.

The meeting was adjourned early so that Southfork resident Frank Mays could present his experiences of being a crew member aboard a coal freighter (ship) that sank in Lake Huron on November 18, 1958. Mr. Mays was one of two survivors out of 35 members of the crew and gave a verbal presentation followed by showing a DVD made by divers who viewed the sunken ship in 2006 (48 years after the sinking). Members of the men's club listened attentively and then asked a series of questions of Mr. Mays

BUNCO CHARITY TOURNAMENT DATE: APRIL 1ST, 2012 TIME: SIGN-IN

START: 5:30PM COST: $6.00 PER PERSON (50% FOR CASH PAYOUTS, 50% FOR TROOPS) This is a game of fun that has been played here in Southfork since September 2009 and enjoyed by many.

It is a game for both men and women and invited guests and it’s for tables in multiples of 4 people but if we are short we assign a “Ghost” to take place of one of the players. The player who has a ghost as its partner for any set in a game, will get the ghost points etc. We draw names/numbers to be seated at each table of 4 and after each hand the losers mover to the next table.

There are 7 cash prizes that are given out and some very good prizes depending on how many play. It is a very easy game that can be learned in about 5 minutes and there will be a lot of help to get you started and that is why we have sign in ½ hour before the games start for some practice games. (ex:) Categories are: If at least 44 people play the prizes are—Most Buncos-$50.00, Most Points$22.00, Most Wins - $13.00, Most Mini Buncos - $13.00, Traveling Dice-$13.00, Most Losses- $11.00, Draw of Names for those who did not win anything-$10.00. So the more people that sign up and join us, the more the winnings will increase. Everyone has a chance!!!!!

Along with this game we will ask everyone signed up to bring their favorite finger food (chips, dip, desserts, tea sandwiches etc.) This could be a lot of fun especially when someone hollers “BUNCO” and we will be using a traveling dice for this event. There will be 3 games and 1 game consist of 6 hands and it goes pretty fast.

This will be a great party atmosphere!!!!!

So be looking for the sign up sheet in the foyer of the clubhouse (lobby) and entry fees must be paid in advance.

BIRTHDAY WISHES NEEDED Our friend, Pauline Fritts, and former neighbor is now living with her son, Benny, in New Jersey.

Pauline’s birthday is on March 30th and she will be 88 years. For all of you who knew her, we thought it would be great if we all sent her some birthday wishes. Unsung Hero’s

In this community of ours we have so many unsung hero’s and they do the many little jobs that no one else wants to be bothered with but everyone expects these various jobs to be done. For instance, we have a few guys who go at least once a month or more if needed to bring all the crushed cans to the can recycling place in Zephyrhills and bring back the proceeds to the treasurer and they have been doing this for many years. I will not name, names,(I am afraid I will miss someone) but you know who you are………and this is just one of the many duties these people have and we never hear a complaint or say, give the job to someone else! Thanks to all of you!!! This is what I call community spirit and team play!!

Recipe of the Month

For all of you who attended and participated in the Hand and Foot Tournament in January and had a chance to taste this recipe which was made by Nancy Jones and was oh, so delicious, I just had to share with everyone.

Barbecue Jackpots ¾-1 lb. ground round or ground sirloin ½ C. BBQ sauce 2 T. Catsup 1 T. instant minced onion or 1 small onion (chopped) 2 T. brown sugar 1 tsp. oregano 1 tsp. basil leaves Few squirts of Worcestershire sauce 1 – 12 oz. can Pillsbury Grands Jr. biscuits or Big buttermilk flaky biscuits ¾ Cup shredded cheddar cheese Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Brown ground meat, chop into small pieces and drain grease. Add BBQ sauce, catsup, onion, brown sugar, oregano, basil and Worcestershire sauce. While meat mixture is simmering on low heat, grease 10 muffin cups in muffin pan. Place one biscuit in each cup. Press dough into bottom and up sides to form a cup. Simmer meat mixture for about 20 minutes and spoon into the 10 biscuit cups. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of the meat mixture. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes until crust is golden brown.

For all the newer residents who are looking for something different, this is it. This restaurant is very rustic, has many stuffed animals all over the building and the “Stag Bar” has the antlers on the bar and above it. This restaurant is rich in history and many a story could be told here. Almost a century ago, the present day Kafé Kokopelli was one of the original Ford Motor Company’s Model T agencies. Besides being a showroom, it was a service center for more than a half-century. Look up its history on www.kafekokopelli.com They have over 12 appetizers (beginnings), over 12 soups and salads and you must try the famous (SheCrab Bisque. It is delicious and out of this world. They also have 12 different types of sandwich’s which include Blackened Prime Rib and NY Strip on Cuban bread. They have steaks dinners, Seafood Feasts which include about 9 different dinners, they have 5 different Italian dishes, 4 different types of Crunchy Fried dinner platters.

The desserts are so good and you want to try one of everything. They have Bananas Foster, Death by Chocolate which is to die for, plus about 6 other desserts. It’s that time of year again here in Southfork and the Annual Mixed Shuffleboard Tournament will be in full swing.

It will be restricted to a total of 16 men and 16 women and it will be a first come, first served sign-up list and there will be a sign up sheet posted in the lobby of the clubhouse.

Prizes will be awarded and there will be refreshments.

Maybe more of you, after seeing the great fun the entrants are having, will come and join the teams on a daily basis. Check the calendar on the last page for days and times.

We are hoping to see all of you at this great annual event.

Don Thompson is heading up a committee of volunteers after listening to All who have asked “How come there are no Hotdogs” On Wednesday afternoons.

Soda’s will be available and Don is looking for anyone wishing to donate a dessert and To let him know and he will place this on the menu for the week.

So keep Wednesday afternoons clear on your calendar and come have your Meal with your friends and neighbors!

PHONE DIRECTORY By now all of you should have received a new phone directory. This year they are a little earlier which I am sure everyone is pleased.

The cutoff for any changes or additions was on November 25th which I stated in the newsletter and they did allow me another week to add or make any changes. Some of the additions and or changes given to me after this date may not be in and I am so sorry about that. One noteable change that should be made in your directories is the phone listing for Bill Laforest and it should only 437-4075 and do not use that 2nd number.

Please, if any changes, deletions or additions have to be made for the next directory, please let me know ASAP so I can submit the changes and they will be in the next January issue.

Fox Spotted in Southfork

Just a note to everyone that fox have been spotted in Southfork and have been seen in front of many homes. If they come near you it may mean that they are rabied and keep your animals on a leash!!!!!

A special note to all the walkers who take their walks in the evening hours and early morning hours when it is still dark. Carry a bell or something that makes a noise to scare them away if you notice one while walking, report this ASAP. They are making their dens in a few areas so please do not leave out any trash or food for them.

While they are beautiful creatures, foxes can be pests in the wrong setting. Foxes threaten the lives of pets and cause problems in people's gardens. But on the other hand they do keep away the mice or snakes and use them as food. Foxes could also carry sarcoptic mange (scabies), which can be transferred to humans and they also could carry distemper virus which can be fatal for dogs and other beloved pets.

Repellents are ineffective and may be illegal in Florida which should be checked out first before using any. Frightening devices, such as noisemakers, may work temporarily, but foxes quickly adapt to them.

If you see any of these animals contact Animal Control or let the office know about it.

Monthly Newsletter

This is for all the “snowbirds” who do not have a computer to read the monthly newsletter that is online. @ www.floridacommunities.com There are a few people that ask to have the newsletter sent to them during their stay up North in the summer month’s. The cost of the newsletter has gone up because of the number of pages and the weight and it would cost anywhere from $.84 and up including the envelope, so the total fee would be $1.00 per month if anyone is interested.

So if you would like for me to mail you out a copy, just forward to me the address of where it is to be mailed to, which months you want sent and the advance $1.00 monthly fee for however many months you want. I will then make sure you receive your newsletter for the months requested.

A is for apple, and B is for boat, that used to be, right, but now it won't float! Age before beauty is what we once said, but let's be a bit more realistic instead.

New Alphabet: A's for arthritis;

B's the bad back,

C's the chest pains, perhaps car-di-ac?

D is for dental decay and decline, E is for eyesight, can't read that top line! F is for fissures and fluid retention, G is for gas which I'd rather not mention.

H high blood pressure--I'd rather it low; I for incisions with scars you can show. J is for joints, out of socket, won't mend, K is for knees that crack when they bend. L 's for libido, what happened to sex?

M is for memory, I forget what comes next. N is neuralgia, in nerves way down low; O is for osteo, bones that don't grow!

P for prescriptions, I have quite a few, just give me a pill and I'll be good as new! Q is for queasy, is it fatal or flu? R is for reflux, one meal turns to two.

ANNUAL RECYCLE DINNER March 10 (4 – 6pm) It’s that time of year again to thank all of you who place their paper and cans in back in the RV section behind Brahman Drive.

Southfork’s annual recycle appreciation party will be held at the clubhouse on Saturday, March 10th. All Southfork residents are welcome to enjoy an evening of food and fellowship. We will be serving Hamburgs, Hotdogs, Soft drinks, Ice Cream and Cake with sugar free ice cream available.

A must is required for a sign-up so we know how many to expect and buy food for. So please come and enjoy the friendship of neighbors and friends and this is our way of thanking everyone for placing their cans and paper for recycling in the bins and this also helps to defer any costs incurred during the year!

The Southwest Florida Management District’s Governing Board voted to declare a Phase 1 water shortage. Pasco County remains on the one-day-a-week (lawn watering) schedule by local ordinance.

WANNA HAVE A PLEASANT SUNDAY AFTERNOON? Recently this roving reporter ran out of projects to pursue here at the Southfork so decided to do a little freestyling off the property.

After going east on route 98 (toward Lakeland) for just a short distance, and then turning right onto Old Lakeland Highway, the Missus and I came across a pleasant little oval aptly named “Sunshine Raceway Park”. Now even though some of the rest of our cronies used to frequent this place, today was our first adventure there.

Brought to you by the Pasco Trotting and Pacing Association, this little raceway offers thoroughbred racing every Sunday afternoon almost every weekend from December 11th thru April 1st. The gates open at high noon and it's post time at 1:30. If you have never experienced this type of action then this venue is just the place to get your feet wet. One little factoid straight from the horses mouth is, if you should meander into the paddock area just remember not to step on to, or pick up any of the “road apples” that may be laying around. These things come straight out of a horse and are sometimes (usually) still warm.

Admission is just a measly two bucks (tha's right, just two somalians) per head and that is for twelve races with from two to four horses per race. Now if you have never been to this type of horse race, the jockeys are not jockeys, but rather passengers in a two wheeled cart that is tied on right behind the horse. Some drivers are men and the others are of the female persuasion. The sex of the driver does not seem to make a difference because the ladies were just as competitive as their male counterparts and sometimes even won their races. Now I must say, that in the two-horse races, that the horse and passenger that came in second did not necessarily come in second, but was rather the first loser according to this reporters' way of lookin' at things If you should be in the mood for something out of the ordinary on an upcoming Sunday afternoon then you should just load up the little woman (or the old man) or a buddy or buddette, take your own lawn chairs and proceed on down the road to the Sunshine Raceway Park. You don't even have to take your own grub becuz they even have a concession stand that offers stuff like, cold drinks, cheap sandwiches and a piece of homemade pie for only a buck a slice. Now where else can you go and have this much fun for so little moolah Jus' remember, Post Time is at 1:30 “They 're at the gate” - See ya at the races!!
