On a regular basis I, send out emails to the snowbirds when there are any happenings here at Southfork, such as deaths, sickness of a resident etc. during the summer months. If there are any happenings or excitement (hurricanes) here that you would not necessarily know about and would like to be kept up to date, I would gladly put you on my email mailing list.

Norman SPENCE Norm was our former Office Park Manager until a year ago and a local resident of Southfork.

SPENCE, Norman., 73, died February 26, 2012. He is survived by wife, Sandra; children, Teri, Christine, Kevin and Phillip; and six grandchildren.

Please, Please Help Us Keep the Sewer System Working!

We have seen an unusual amount of “raggy” material in our sewage treatment plant over the past few months, which is part of the reason the plant has not been operating as efficiently as it should be.

We ask that everyone take (extreme) care to not put towels, rags, mop heads or other heavy, non-water degradable objects down the toilets or other access ports in the sewer system. Such objects can clog the system or jam the pumps in the lift station. When the pumps get jammed, the sewage does not get up to the treatment plant and can cause an (unpleasant) overflow. To clear a clog is not a pleasant task, just ask Andrew, Tommy or John (not something any of us look forward to). And if the objects make it through the pumps, they end up in the sewage treatment tanks and can clog the lines, causing a back-up in the system. This can cause the system to emit unpleasant odors and we really don’t want that, do we? So if we try to follow a simple rule; if something can’t pass through your body, please don’t put it down the drain. Of course, the exception being toilet paper or tissue paper.

Have Brown Stains on the Side of Your House?

As some of you know, we have been going around the park to check on the “cleanliness” of your home and have had to give out some letters reminding people that they need to pressure wash their homes. Unfortunately pressure washing doesn’t take out the brown stains that are on some homes. Those brown stains are from fertilizers that are used by some lawn maintenance companies. Well, we have a solution to clean those brown stains. We wrote about what to use in a previous article and several people have used it to great success. It’s called “The Works”. It’s actually a toilet bowl cleaner but does a wonderful job on getting rid of those brown stains and is very easy to use. It is available at “Big Lots” for $1.00. There are 2 bottles; you want to get the blue bottle, not the gel.

So…, as part of checking on the cleanliness of your home, you should include the brown staining and take measures to remove it from the side of your homes. The brown staining really detracts from an otherwise clean home. If you have questions about how to use “The Works”, please give us a call or come to the office. And please be aware, we are going to start including the brown staining as a reason to send you a friendly reminder that your home needs cleaning. We are just trying to help you maintain the beauty of Southfork.

Improvement Updates Just an update on some ongoing improvements around the park. We are replacing all the 4x4 wooden stop sign & street sign posts with plastic posts with decorative tops. This should be complete by mid April. We are replacing all the wooden fencing around the wells and around the sewage treatment plant (you may have noticed the piles of fencing near the pavilion ). After 20 years, it’s starting to really show its age; much like many of us after 55+ years. This will probably take several weeks to complete. And we hope to re-do our office in the notto-distant future. Some of you may have noticed we re-arranged the furniture to provide a more “welcoming” atmosphere.

MARDI GRAS GAME NIGHT

ANOTHER FUN FILLED EVENING, ENJOYED BY 94 SMILING FACES. THE GAMES WERE ALL ACTIVE AND WELL PLAYED, PROVIDING MANY LAUGHS AND LOTS OF TICKETS. THE RANDOM DRAWINGS WERE A SURPRISE TO MANY WINNERS, MYSELF INCLUDED. THE PIZZA GUY ARRIVED ABOUT 8:15 AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY WE HAD TO REORDER. GAMING MAKES ONE HUNGRY! WHEN DOT CADY THROWS A BASH, NOBODY GOES AWAY HUNGRY. ALL GAMING ENDED AT 9:45 AND THEN THE REAL ACTION BEGAN. WE HAD TWENTY-FOUR $20.00 GIFT CERTIFICATES, FROM SEVEN AREA RESTAURANTS AND ONE FROM A SMALL STORE NAMED BEALLS. AS IT TURNED OUT, ONLY EVERYONE WANTED TO WIN THE BEALLS CERTIFICATES. WITH ALL THAT SAID, WE HAVE TO THANK EVERYONE WHO HELPED TO PUT THIS EVENT AND IF WE COUNT CORRECTLY, THERE WERE THIRTY-TWO. WHENEVER ASKED, OUR PEOPLE ALWAYS FALL OVER THEMSELVES TRYING TO HELP. Women’s Club

On March 7th, 38 members and one guest (Peggy Elkins, sister-in-law) came to the clubhouse for their monthly meeting. The clubhouse looked fantastic, decorated for the theme of St Patrick’s Day, all in green and gold. The social committee did a great job in hosting the monthly meeting and they were, Peggy Elkins, Susie Losasso, Dee Martin, Nancy McCallan and Diane Stricklen. The committee placed a little shamrock under 2 of the plate settings and the winners won handmade placemats and towel which were made by Peggy Elkins.

Before starting the meeting we had a moment of silence to pray for Joe Clifford, the husband of Mary who passed away a few days ago.

The minutes and treasurers reports were read and approved.

It was brought to the attention of the members attending that the board approved a request for a donation of $30.00 to help towards the purchase of a new printer for Craig Whitbeck who does a lot of work for the Women’s Club. The board also approved a check of $50.00 to Sandie Spence on the passing of Norm Spence who was our former Park manager for many years.

The Chili Dinner and the entertainment following the dinner of “Let’s Make A Deal” game was discussed which proves to be a lot of fun and everything is under control and ready to go with cooks ready to prepare that delicious Chili again.

Also mentioned was our “Bunco” tournament which will be held on April 1st and hope everyone comes to help the cause of “Support Our Troops.”

Because we did not have a speaker we decided to play 5 games of Bingo with cash prizes and we had a total of nine winners @ $5.00 each. It was enjoyed by everyone!!!

We also raffled 5 bags of Avon Products donated by Tanya Hahn who has a heart of gold. Thanks Tanya!

Next month, one of our residents Frank Mays, will do a presentation about the accident on the ship “Carl D. Bradley” on Lake Michigan and he is the last survivor. We are looking forward to hearing the presentation.

We closed the meeting at 10:45am which was followed by a lovely and delicious buffet prepared by our hostesses.

Southfork Men’s Club The Men’s Club met for their monthly meeting on Thursday, March 1st. Many issues were discussed and the main one was the upcoming Shuffleboard Tournament.

Everything seems to be on par with the tournament and Citrus Motors are again sponsoring this annual event. Hope everyone came out and cheered for the entrants.

Make sure to plan on attending the next monthly meeting and bring with you any interesting suggestions or ideas. All the men are invited to attend on the first Thursday, April 5th at 9am.

Out & About Or Prime – Wine SUNDAY, APRIL 29TH We will again car-pool and leave the Club House about 1:00 pm. Our first stop will educate us on the wine making processes and allow some sampling, plus wine buying.

Then our next location will satisfy our need for beef. Carolyn loved both locations, what more can I say???

NEIGHBORLY UNSUNG HERO’S There have been many instances here in Southfork where there has been a sudden illness or death occurring. During crisis times such as this there are so many here in our community who do not hesitate and send out a helping hand to those who are in need.

On a weekly, daily, monthly basis many of these neighbors take care of those who are in desperate need with visits, taking food, calling them by phone and in so many other numerous ways.

We are very thankful for the many residents who take on being kind and considerate and these people never look for a “Thank you” and at this time I commend all who have and still are helping others.

Thank you all and that is what makes living here in Southfork so…….FANTASTIC!!!!!

Annual Bingo Party Sponsored by “Brighthouse”

On February 15th, there was a bingo party celebration to show how much we really appreciated this Board and Bingo Machine that was purchased by the bingo patrons with their weekly donations 3 years ago with the help of Scott Heiler and this is a great way to say “thanks.”

At each table there was a bottle of sparkling (non-alcoholic)bubbly.. The many people who were in attendance for this festive occasion,(including participation from Blue Jay) brought various types of finger food (4 tables full plus.) There was enough food to feed the entire community and boy was it delicious. Before the games began everyone got to go and fill up a plate of food and then at half time a donated (from table 1) decorated cake (enough to feed 80 people) was cut and again everyone got to eat again. Bright House came with gifts for everyone ( Bingo Dabbers etc ) and also door prizes. During intermission we had 5 games of nickel bingo and that was also a lot of fun and some good winnings. If you like Bingo, come and join us on Wednesday evenings, the doors open at 5:30pm and the bingo starts at 6:30pm.

We were so thrilled to have that beautiful machine which is such improvement over the old one (about 20 years old) and after so much trial and tribulations that we went through to get that machine that is why every year we will celebrate our success in getting this newer machine.

Legend of the Lily The proudest and most beautiful flower in the Garden of Gethsemane was the white lily. The lily knew that it was special and would proudly lift its face toward anyone who entered the garden.

One night, a stranger came into the garden to pray. He looked so sad and wept so bitterly that the other flowers in the garden couldn’t help but hang their heads in sorrow too. But not the lily……It continued to stand straight and proud, straining to catch the best rays of the moonlight on its beautiful white face.

The next day, the lily was shaken by sad news. The man who had prayed so sorrowfully in the garden had been sentenced to die by crucifixion. The lily was ashamed about how it had acted and turned its head downward in its humility.

Since that first Good Friday, the lily has never lifted its head in pride again. _____________________________________________________________________________________

The Pine tree Crosses

Pine trees know when it’s Easter……..

Begin watching in the tops of the trees about two weeks before Easter. Usually about the first week of April, depending on the weather and the spring growth as to when the little yellow shoots will begin to sprout and then branch off and form a cross.

When Easter Sunday arrives you should be able to see the little crosses on top of the pine trees.

As literally millions have seen the little crosses on top of the Pine Trees about 2 weeks before Easter…being another witness of the Amazing Grace to the human race is something to see.

Pass this on to your little grandchildren and teach them that the Pine Trees know when it’s Easter!

Italian Style PORK CHOPS MOZZARELLA

1 envelope dry onion soup 1/3 cup dry Italian seasoned bread crumbs 1 egg (2 if you think you need more) 2 tablespoons of water 6 boneless pork chops 1 ½ cups Prego Traditional Italian sauce (or your favorite) 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (approx 4 oz)

Directions: 1. Stir the dried soup mix and bread crumbs on a plate.

2. Beat the egg and water into a shallow dish.

3. Dip the pork in the egg mixture, then coat with the crumb mixture.

4. Place the pork into a 2 quart shallow baking dish.

5. Bake in a 400 degree oven for about 30 to 45 minutes (or until done).

6. Pour the sauce over the pork and sprinkle the cheese over the sauce.

7. Bake for another 5 min or until the cheese is melted.

The Elliptical Egg The elliptical egg often symbolizes spring, rebirth, and the season’s renewal of life.

Using eggs as a holiday tradition is found across cultures. During the Jewish Passover, a roasted egg sits on the seder plate. For Christians who celebrate Easter (April 8), eggs were traditionally forbidden during Lent and always eaten on Easter Sunday.

Eggs are also fertility symbols and reflect ancient spring renewal rites.

If the egg you are eating on Easter morning has two yolks in it, you’ll have lots of money the rest of the year. –folklore

IT WAS PALM SUNDAY AND, BECAUSE OF A SORE THROAT, FIVE-YEAR-OLD JOHNNY STAYED HOME FROM CHURCH WITH A SITTER. WHEN THE FAMILY RETURNED HOME, THEY WERE CARRYING SEVERAL PALM BRANCHES. THE BOY ASKED WHAT THEY WERE FOR. "PEOPLE HELD THEM OVER JESUS' HEAD AS HE WALKED BY." "WOULDN'T YOU KNOW IT," THE BOY FUMED, "THE ONE SUNDAY I DON'T GO, HE SHOWS UP!"

2012 SOUTHFORK SHUFFLEBOARD TOURNAMENT

The annual shuffleboard tournament co-chaired by Bob Lynch & Pat Grossi was held on March 12 here at Southfork. The Dye Family Dynasty of Professional Shufflers (DFDPS) continued with this year’s champion being the other half of the Dye family to come out on top. Last year Mary Jo Dye was one half of the winning team. This year Marvin Dye teamed with Mary Freund to take the First Place trophy. Marvin stated that: “My trophy from this year is slightly taller than Mary Jo's trophy from last year.”

Second place honors went to Les Myers and Carol Quant and the Third place finishers were Laird Monahan and Mary Bolin.

This year’s tournament was conducted by the Southfork Men's Club with financial assistance from Citrus Motors of Dade City who donated $100 and gift certificates for two free oil changes.

A 50/50 drawing was held with Larry Martin winning the cash. Pete Logoyda and John Clemons both won oil changes.

Chairmen Lynch & Grossi said that they really appreciated the members of the men's club and all of the other residents who helped plan, prepare and clean-up after the event.

Kathy Gallick, Mary Jean Barber, Harvey Barber and Bob Downs “manned” the grill to prepare hotdogs for all of the contestants and any members of the community who came by to cheer on their favorite team. Many ladies of the community also provided baked goods for the attendees to munch on.

Monday Morning Coffee Hour Each week on Monday mornings from 8am to 9am there is always coffee brewing which is free and we do have donuts for those who are a little hungry and they are $.50 each.

What a good way to meet some of your neighbors and start your week.

The men are usually talking about the latest sport event on TV and the women are always talking about the latest happenings in the community. No agenda or speakers, just a chance for our community to come together. Bring your smile and wit and we’ll furnish your coffee. We would love to get to know all of our new neighbors and the others who have been in hibernation lately. Come join us!!!!

Reiki treatments involves light hand placements to balance the body’s energy flows and strengthen it’s ability to heal itself. It promotes deep relaxation and reduces stress. Sessions are performed fully clothed either on a massage table or a chair. $15.00 for 20-30 minute session. 1st session is complimentary.
