ODE TO BALD MEN Early in the morn’ you look for a part in our hair, when you look up high, it’s already there. It takes only a little sh shampoo to wash, you’ve lost some hair, gained face, by gosh.

Parting from your hair is such sweet sorrow, for it you’ve lost your comb, you don’t have to borrow.

You lose some height when you lose your hair, but the wind doesn’t whistle through it when it’s it not there. You wore a hat on your pelt in cold and rain, and now must wear it in the sun to avoid pain.

While you never will be covered with hair like a kitty, bald can be beautiful, or just a little pretty.

GRANDMA'S HANDS:

A must read thru to the end please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench.. She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands. When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK. Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. 'Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking,' she said in a clear voice strong. 'I didn't mean to disturb you, grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,' I explained to her.

'Have you ever looked at your hands,' she asked. 'I mean really looked at your hands?'

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making. Grandma smiled and related this story: 'Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. 'They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor.

They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war. 'They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse.

'They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer.

'These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of life. But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of God. I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I think of grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. Happy Mother’s Day to all and especially the Grandmother’s!

From the Managers Sewer System Update.

We have a new operator for our sewer and water systems. In the month that the new operators have taken over, we have noticed a significant improvement in the operation of the sewage treatment plant. Hopefully this will help cure some of the “odors” that have emanated from the plant over the last several months. We still have more to do but we are impressed with the progress. However, we still have a “rag” problem with the plant. Please don’t put rags, heavy papers, towels, mop heads, swifter mops, sanitary napkins, etc. down the toilet or drains. Just remember this simple rule, if something can’t pass through your body, please don’t put it down the drain (except for toilet paper).

Improvement Updates Continued updates on ongoing improvements around the park. We should have completed replacing all the 4x4 wooden stop sign & street sign posts with plastic posts with decorative tops by the time this newsletter comes out. We are also replacing some of the worn signs and signs that were “misspelled” (Can you identify which street signs we are talking about?). Replacing the wooden fencing around the wells and around the sewage treatment plant is still in progress. We are well into the planning for re-doing our office. This will probably require closing the office for a few days to re-do floors and to set-up new furniture. We will try to keep you posted (watch our bulletin board in the clubhouse for any announcements between newsletters.) We did get a new computer, which is up and running much faster than the old one (thanks, Jeff!).

Need to Borrow a Table or Some Chairs?

If you do, you need to fill out a form requesting what you need and when and submit it to Dot Cady. The HOA is responsible for the borrowing of the furniture.

Don’t Want your Grass Mowed?

If you don’t want the mowers to cut your grass please put out a no-mow sign or red reflectors on posts. Some folks have been placing blue reflectors in their yards to mark sprinkler heads and the mowers have mistaken them to mean don’t mow. We will tell the mowers to not mow only where they see no-mow signs or RED reflectors.

Summer’s Coming and the Winter Residents Are Leaving!

The time has come for our winter residents to head back north. We hope you all have a safe trip, a great summer, and we look forward to your return in the fall.

It’s Our Anniversary!

Actually, April 4th was our 1 year anniversary here at Southfork. Where has the year gone? We have learned much, accomplished much and have met many great residents in this past year. We have also experienced the loss of way too many residents. That is the sad part of our job. We are looking forward to another great year here at Southfork.

Great Berry Tip

Berries are delicious, but they're also kind of delicate.

Raspberries in particular seem like they can mold before you even get them home from the market. There's nothing more tragic than paying $4 for a pint of local raspberries, only to look in the fridge the next day and find that fuzzy mold growing on their insides.

Well, with fresh berries (strawberry, blueberry, black berry etc) just starting to hit farmers markets, we can tell you that how to keep them fresh! Here’s a tip I’m sharing on how to prevent them from getting there in the first place: Wash them with vinegar.

When you get your berries home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider probably work best) and ten parts water. Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around. Drain, rinse if you want (though the mixture is so diluted you can't taste the vinegar,) and pop in the fridge. The vinegar kills any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit, and voila! Raspberries will last a week or more, and strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft. So go forth and stock up on those pricey little gems, knowing they'll stay fresh as long as it takes you to eat them.

Southfork Mobile Homeowners Association will host a Memorial Day Picnic May 28th at 4pm Menu: BBQ Chicken, Pork Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Rolls, Iced Tea and Dessert.

Women’s Club On April 4th, 40 ladies gathered in the clubhouse for their monthly meeting. The clubhouse was nicely decorated with the spring colors and this was done by, Nancy Jones, Carol Quandt and Cathy Thompson our hostesses for the meeting. Thank you ladies for a job well done.

The minutes and treasurers report’’s were read and approved.

We raffled (5) lovely bags decorated for Easter and donated by Tanya Hahn who was in the hospital for surgery. gery. All the members signed (2) colored plates with get well messages. I delivered them to Tanya at the hospital with a flower arrangement and she was very happy to read all of the get well messages.

Our fundraiser, the chili dinner was a success and tha thanks nks to all the helpers and to everyone who bought tickets…………This was a team effort. Everyone really appreciated the game of “Let’s Make A Deal” and Carol Albers was fantastic. Carol also gave 2 certificates for this meeting to CICi’s Pizza which was raffled off to 2 lucky members.

Thanks to Phyllis Grossi who organized the ”Bunco Tournament for the Troops “ and this brought in $92.00 for the Troops. We gave a check for $100.00 to help Bob Williams with the postage when he sends supplies to our troops.

A check for $200.00 was given to Day Star from the Charity Committee Committee.. Our next fundraiser will be on th November 17 which is the Annual Bazaar.

Our speaker for this meeting was Frank Mays, who gave a fantastic presentation on the accident that happened on Lake Michigan, November 18, 1958. Frank was the only survivor of the ship “Carl D. Bradley”, during a brutal storm on Lake Michigan. He also showed us a DVD and it was extremely interesting. The ladies were very impressed and enjoyed every minute of his presentation and asked many questions.

The meeting was then followed by a superb luncheon prepared by our hostesses along with delicious sandwiches made by Donna Trubiano.

As you can see, the Women’s Club is quite active. The next meeting is May 2nd at 9:30am.

CHILI SUPPER MARCH 2012

S’MORES MONKEY BREAD ½ cup sugar ½ cup crushed graham crackers or graham cracker crumbs 4 cans Pillsbury® Grands!® Flaky Layers refrigerated biscuits 1 cup milk chocolate chips (6 oz) ½ cup miniature marshmallows 1 ¼ cups marshmallow creme ¾ cup butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla

DIRECTIONS: •

Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 6-cup (9-inch) fluted tube cake pan or angel food (tube) cake pan with cooking spray.

•

In large food-storage plastic bag, mix sugar and cracker crumbs.

Separate each can of dough into 8 biscuits; cut each into quarters. Place 6 to 8 biscuit pieces in sugar-crumb mixture; shake well. Continue to add more biscuit pieces to sugar-crumb until all are completely coated.

•

Layer biscuit pieces, chocolate chips and marshmallows in pan.

•

In 1-quart saucepan, melt marshmallow creme, butter and vanilla over medium heat. When mixture begins to boil, cook and stir 1 minute. Pour over biscuits, chips and marshmallows in pan.

•

Bake 35 minutes or until golden brown. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Place plate upside down over pan; turn plate and pan over. Remove pan. Serve warm.

Our Neighbors “

After a recent discussion about the many sick “homebound” we have here in Southfork, I was just wondering if anyone is interested in helping to get started a “Help Your Neighbor Committee” by preparing meals? This committee should have at least 6 people or more on it? Sort of like a “Meal on Wheels” but only for Southfork residents!

This is a committee not affiliated with any group or club here in the community. I recently heard of a few people who do not have any family and cannot cope on their own until they are back on their own feet.

This committee of people would help with meals or snacks during a weekly/short period of time and maybe with this assistance, would help the resident to get stronger and get back to taking care of themselves a lot faster.

This committee would only provide meals, approx. 1 to 3 days per week and nothing else!!!!!

If 6 or more people do not show any interest I will not pursue this venture. Needed, summer and winter residents!

FIFTY YEARS LATER

Each morning we brush side by side in our double-sink bathroom and share Metamucil along with our multi-grain toast.

We search yet again through the house for our disappeared glasses, so we can read all the bad news in the Tribune and the Post.

He’s a 9.45 and I’m 10 at the dermatologist, which we’ll then follow by grocery shopping at Walmart. Tomorrow we’ll sign up for senior classes at the “Y”, then it’s off to Assisted Living to see our neighbor.

Together we meet with our broker to get reassurance that we’ll die before there’s no money to cover our bills, then we meet with our tax accountant to check on our broker and then off to meet with our lawyer to write a few codicils.

He knows when he goes for his CAT scan that I’ll gladly take him and I know when I go for some blood work he’ll come and he’ll wait. These are not like those torrid times on that beach in New Jersey, but a date is a date fifty years later.

A sincere thank you to all my friends and neighbors who provided cards, visits and concern over my extended hospitalization.

My special friend, Jan, took good care of my puppies and provided several weeks of “meals on wheels.”

SOUTHFORK AMBULANCE PROGRAM

Our membership program is alive and well. A lower than expected attendance at the sign-up meeting was rapidly augmented by late arrivals and home contacts. By the end of the day we were secure in members to fund the program.

A minimum of five members were needed to form the “Board of Directors”, eleven people came forward. Five people were selected to fill the “Chairs”, plus three alternates.

It was decided that a second membership sign-up and status reporting meeting would be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 10:00am. Our first annual election meeting will be in January, 2013. A date will be posted later.

A membership fee of $15.00/per person is the cost of joining. We see this program as a tremendous asset to our community. Thank you for supporting it.

Check List Before You Leave your Home Here In Southfork To Go North 1. Turn off your water 2. Set your thermostat to 80 (air) or higher because of the heat here in the summer.

3. Turn off all unnecessary electrical appliances (example: hot water heater & refrigerator, unplug cords etc.)

4. Properly store all outdoor furniture (hanging baskets, wind chimes, welcome mats, umbrellas, grills and all ornamentals) 5. Make sure an up-to-date house key is left with a trusted neighbor or friend who is a year round resident.

6. Properly prune all shrubs and dispose of any unwanted plants.

7. If you have shutters or awnings, please close them and secure them upon your departure.

8. Stop and forward your mail 9. Contact your cable etc and let them know you will be on vacation for however months and you will be away 10. Stop your newspaper 11. Put plastic wrap over your toilet tanks so that the water in the bowl will not evaporate.

12. Spray and set out some roach traps to catch those little invaders who love the heat.

13. Remember to ask a neighbor or friend to check your home while you are away in case of leaks etc.

By making your property look like it is lived in everyday, might discourage theft. There are available people who will look after your home for a small fee if needed. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

Combating Critters Do you have any critters in your yard or garden?

Here are a few tips to help!!!!

To keep Rabbits out of your garden, deodorant shavings placed in cloth bags around the shrubs, flower garden etc. help keep them away.

Plant “rue” (strong scented woody herb w/bitter tasting leaves) to keep cats out of your garden or yard To see a mole run out, astonished, put a bulb of garlic in its hole Sprinkle red pepper in its holes or gummy bears “ (yes, that is correct) but no human scent should be on anything you put in the holes. Use gloves.

Scatter garlic around your yard or garden to deter many a pest - such as raccoons or woodchucks. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

To everyone who attended our breakfasts “THANK YOU!” and we hoped you enjoyed. To everyone who helped in any way by serving, cooking, setup, clean up, selling tickets, taking money or anything else THANK YOU, you all were great. Have a great summer and we will see you in the fall.

I liked the old paths, when Moms were at home, Dads were at work. Brothers went into the army, and sisters got married BEFORE having children!

Crime did not pay, hard work did and people knew the difference.

Moms could cook; Dads would work; Children would behave.

Husbands were loving; Wives were supportive; and children were polite.

Women wore the jewelry; and Men wore the pants.

Women looked like ladies; Men looked like gentlemen; and children looked decent.

People loved the truth, and hated a lie. They came to church to get IN, Not to get OUT! Hymns sounded Godly; Sermons sounded helpful; Rejoicing sounded normal; And crying sounded sincere.

Cursing was wicked; Drugs were for illness.

The flag was honored; America was beautiful; And God was welcome!

We read the Bible in public; Prayed in school; And preached from house to house.

To be called an American was worth dying for; To be called an American was worth living for; To be called a traitor was a shame!

I still like the old paths the best!
