What makes a Dad?

God took the strength of a mountain The majesty of a tree The warmth of the summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle’s flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew his masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it…..Dad!!!!

Hurricane season is upon us and officially starts on the st 1 of June.

Before the wind starts to blow, there are a few items that you should stow. Once we get information from the weather bureau that a possible hurricane is nearing the Tampa area we should all be ready and follow the advice of the officials.

It’s a good idea to put away any of your lawn decorations and or furniture that could become airborne missiles in a forceful wind. Don’t forget sidewalk lighting fixtures, wind chimes, flags and potted plants!

These items along with any patio furniture are best moved to your shed/garage for the duration of the storm.

Make sure you have items available to use and packed including can foods, medicines etc. that should be ready if any evacuation is necessary.

Heed the warning!!!!!!!

He takes his photo album of so many years gone by, so many smiling faces all looking at him. All of his children, oh how they have grown, from babies to parents with babies of their own, staring up at his face as he flips through open pages of his life. So many memories of so many years gone by.

Flag Day - June 14th -is celebrated among the people of the United States of America. The celebration is aimed to pay the gratitude to their national flag and importantly the birth of the national flag. The origin of the significance of this very special day is far back on 14th January, 1777; when the continental congress replaced the British symbols of the grand union flag. This flag featured 13 stars in a circular shape on the course of blue and 13 red and white stripes. These 13 stars indicated the presence of 13 states in America which were later increased on the account of entries of new states. The stripes were also increased to 15 but then reversed back to the old 13.

From the Managers What’s On Your Outside Faucets?

The Florida Dept. of Health recently conducted a routine investigation of Southfork and found many homes not in compliance. The violation was for an absence of backflow preventers on all external hose bibs. Please check your outside faucets to see if there is a “gizmo” that looks like an aerator. If not, please make sure you put one on. They are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased at Lowes, Home Depot, and probably even Walmart.

New Lawn Mowers.

We have decided to hire new lawnmowers for the park. They will have started with their 1st cut by the time you get this newsletter. Currently they plan to be here Monday and Tuesday; Monday they will be cutting primarily around the residences and Tuesday they will be doing the common areas and the utility areas. If you don’t want the mowers to cut your grass please put out RED reflectors on posts. Place 1 in the front yard if you don’t want the front yard cut. If you don’t want any of your yard cut, put a red reflector in both the front and back yards.

We would like to eliminate the “no mow” signs and just use the reflectors. To help the mowers, we have compiled a list of who currently does not want all or part of their yard mowed by our mowers. If you wish to change your preference from no-mow to mow, or vice versa, please let us know so we can pass it on to the mowers. And please be patient while they learn the park and how to accommodate the different mow or nomow yards.

Crime Workshop We, with the HOA, have arranged to host a crime workshop given by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. The workshop will be held May 31st at 10:00 AM in the clubhouse. We expect at least 10 of the sheriff’s staff to be in attendance, including Sheriff Nocco himself. This would be a great time to ask questions and air any concerns we may have about potential crime here at Southfork and to understand how we can work with the sheriff’s office in keeping Southfork safe. We urge all residents to attend this important workshop.

Dumpster Use We again need to remind our residents that the dumpster located near the well is primarily for management use.

If you have articles that you feel can’t be placed by the roadside for pickup by our waste collection company on Wed. or Sat., then please call us to see if there is room in the dumpster for your debris. In the past few weeks, large articles and/or lots of brush have been placed in the dumpster that has made it too full for our maintenance crew to place debris in the dumpster. Part of the reason the RV storage area has gotten messy is because we have had to “stage” brush and other debris there because the dumpster was too full! As much as we don’t want to, we may need to lock the dumpster to prevent unauthorized use if we continue to have problems with the use of our dumpster.

Want to Make It Easier to Pay Your Lot Rent?

Several residents have asked if we accept automatic payment for their lot rent. The answer is yes but not by automatic funds transfer (i.e., by EFT). Several of our residents have a check sent to us automatically by their bank (i.e., auto bill pay). Most financial institutions have this capability so if you want to not worry about sending or delivering that monthly check, check with your bank to set up this feature. It’s a great way to avoid late charges when you forget to pay your rent!

Grandma’s on the Internet

Grandma’s on the internet, You won’t believe the nuts she’s met But what she’d really like to know, Is-where are those who quilt and sew And do the things she likes to do? She’d give them hints, and learn some too.

She used to be “scared” of a wee little mouse, would scream if one ever got in the house.

Now she hugs one night and day, she’d rather cuddle it than stay on the couch and watch T.V., her first love now is her P.C.

She’s like to see it all unfurled, so much to learn in this new world.

She could explore it from her chair, but mostly, she plays solitaire, but that’s o.k., she doesn’t care, about the terrible weather in Zaire?????

Windows were glass she’d wash and look through, now they are programs to help us all view, the earth and the sea and the beautiful sky.

A “virus” was something from which you could die, now it’s a nuisance that could spoil your day, but it can be fixed and sent on it’s way.

She served her time with diapers and dishes. Now she can do whatever she wishes, and if that means staying up half the night to point arrows at “ icons”-that’s really alright.

A “bit” was something you had little of, now it takes “eight bytes” to make the above. It’s all so confusing, it makes her head ache. A “byte” was something you take from a cake. She’s learning more about it now, guess who from.

Her four year old grandchild showed her how!!!!!

BLOCK CAPTAINS The block captains deliver the newsletters to all the households on their street. If the block captain knows that a person is on vacation, the block captain does not leave a paper there, but if he does not know that the person is away, will leave a paper at their door.

It would be nice if the neighbors would pick it up instead of leaving it there and blaming the block captain for it if they know their neighbor is away. All extra newsletters should be brought to the front office anyway.

Let’s be a good neighbor and work hand in hand.

Women’s Club

I want to thank all of you for sending me so many messages of sympathy and it really warmed my heart. When I got the call that my brother died in a motorcycle accident, I thought my heart would stop because it hurt so much.

But time heals and life goes on. When you stop and think of life you realize that we are on this earth for a very short time.

The summer season is here and the Women’s club will be going our on June 6th at 10:30am to the Village Inn in Dade city and it should be a nice get together and there might be some surprises.

See you there and please sign-up in the clubhouse.

OLD WORN OUT FLAGS Is there anyone who has a suggestion of what the residents can do with flags that are ripped or torn and need to be discarded? Walmart here in Dade City used to take these and bring them to the VFW and they don’t do this anymore.

They are never to be thrown in the trash can and would be great if we knew of somewhere we could take them. If anyone has any ideas please let me know and then I will place the information in the newsletter.

“BEWARE OF SOUTHFORK’S CARD SHARK” Southfork card players beware!!! I think we have a “card shark” amongst us. Her name is Miss Willie and on Tuesday evening, April 24th, Miss Willie had a “ pinochle” and I believe this is the first one of the season.

For you non-pinochle card players, a “pinochle” is where you take every trick in the hand and this is very rare.

Congrats to Willie, submitted by Faye Chuckle of the Month Four old retired guys are walking down a street in Yuma, Az. They turn a corner and see a sign that says, “Old Timers Bar – All drinks 10 cents”. They look at each other and then go in, thinking-this is too good to be true. The old bartender says in a voice that carries across the room, “Come on in and let me pour one for you! What’ll it be gentlemen?”

There’s a fully stocked bar, so each of the men orders a martini. In no time, the bartender serves up four iced martinis-shaken, not stirred-and says, “That’ll be 10 cents each, please.” The four guys stare at the bartender for a moment, then at each other. They can’t believe their good luck. They pay the 40 cents, finish their martinis, and order another round. Again, four excellent martinis are produced, with the bartender saying, “That’s 40 cents, please.” They pay the 40 cents, but their curiosity gets the better of them. They’ve each had two martinis and haven’t even spent a dollar yet.

Finally one of them says, “How can you afford to serve martinis as good as these for a dime apiece?” “I’m a retired tailor from Phoenix,” the bartender says, and I always wanted to own a bar. Last year, I hit the lottery jackpot for $125 million and decided to open this place. Every drink costs a dime, Wine, Liquor or Beerit’s all the same. “Wow! That’s some story”, one of the men says. As the four of them sip at their martinis, they can’t help noticing seven other people at the end of the bar who don’t have any drinks in front of them and haven’t ordered anything the whole time they’ve been there. Nodding at the seven at the end of the bar, one of the men asks the bartender, “What’s with them?”

The bartender says, “They’re retired people from Florida. They’re waiting for Happy Hour when drinks are half-price”.

Chocolate Chip Cookie -Stuffed Pies Ingredients: 1 box Pillsbury® refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box 8 Pillsbury® Ready to Bake!® refrigerated chocolate chip cookies (from 16-oz package) 8 milk chocolate candy drops or pieces, unwrapped 1 teaspoon sugar

DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat oven to 450°F. Remove pie crusts from pouches; unroll on work surface. Cut eight 3 1/2-inch rounds from each crust.

2. Place 1 unbaked cookie in center of each of 8 of the rounds; top each with 1 candy, pointed end into cookie. Brush edge of each crust with water. Top with remaining 8 rounds. Press edges together with fork to seal. Brush top of each with water; sprinkle with sugar.

3. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.

This is something that the great and grandchildren would really love………….Hmmmmm, something to munch on those days with nothing to do and you are craving something chocolate!!!!

Our Neighbors “

Since the last newsletter, myself and two other year round residents and two “snowbirds” have signed up for this way of helping our neighbors and I also received a monetary donation from another resident who wanted to help get this venture started of helping others.

This is a committee not affiliated with any group or club here in the community. There are people who live alone and would not be able to fix meals in an event of illness and that is whom we will try to help.

The committee would help with meals or snacks during a weekly/short period of time and maybe with this assistance, would help the resident to get stronger and get back to taking care of themselves a lot faster.

This committee would only provide meals, approx. 1 to 3 days per week and nothing else!!!!!

The traffic information is free on your home phone.

When storms threaten Florida, a call to 511 will let you know before you leave so you can plan ahead. 511 gives information about road conditions, congestion, contraflow, suspended tolls and any road closings.

This is statewide information that can be accessed and it may ask which part of the state do you want to know about. This is all real time reporting.

You can also access this information on the internet by going into: www.Fl511.com to receive statewide and regional updates. The website provides much of the same information as the phone call, plus additional features, including traffic camera’s.

So before leaving on your trip, check out the site before leaving home or while traveling throughout the state. It’s fast, easy and just a few clicks away.

AMBULANCE FUNDRAISER ICE CREAM SOCIAL

Our Mother’s Day social gathering turned out very well. Forty two friendly people enjoyed their fill of delicious Root Beer Floats, or Ice Cream Sundaes. Second helpings of ice cream given to anyone capable of eating more, it was great!

After all expenses figured in, we added to our treasury, $88.00.

Enough toppings leftover for a second social, possibly an evening in July. We thank all of you that participated in this event and in particular the guys who handled the “dippers”, Dave Garside, Ed Bellnier, Tom Geyer, Mike Gallagher, Gary Mentro and Pete Logoyda. Three boys are in the school yard bragging about their fathers.

The first boy says, 'My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, they give him $50.'

The second boy says, 'That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on piece of paper, he calls it a song, they give him $100.'

The third boy says, 'I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon, and it takes eight people to collect all the money!'

As May turns into June, we notice the beginning of our summer slowdown period. Have you noticed the change in traffic???? The stores are less busy and you can go into any restaurant without a waiting time attached to it.

We have had the last Pancake Breakfast and Hotdogs by the pool until Fall, but remember, the Clubhouse is still active with our Daily Card games and Weekly Bingo, Monday Morning Coffee Hour etc. and this does not mean we have all closed down for the season.

What this does mean, we here in Southfork do not have to slow down just because the “SnowBirds” went North for the summer. It means if anyone is “bored”, you have the option to suggest to the Association Board, some sort of an event that would keep everyone active, smiling and on the move.

So get your thinking caps on and help everyone to get out of the rut of doing nothing and to get moving! Think outside the box of dinners and suggest some cool evening entertainment or sing a longs, group walks, new games, scavenger hunts etc.

It’s so sad to hear someone say,” it is so boring with nothing to do”. Those who are bored might be able to suggest something everyone would enjoy and it does not have to be a costly event but something that could be just a get together with friends. If you do have a suggestion, it also does not mean you, yourself, have to put it together, but maybe there would be a few people who would take the suggestion and run with it and it could be the best social of the summer without you even trying.

Hope this gets you thinking and if you have an idea, “BRING IT ON”.

I locked my car. As I walked away I heard my car door unlock. I went back and locked my car again three times. Each time, as soon as I started to walk away, I would hear it unlock again!! Naturally alarmed, I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store.

They were obviously watching me intently, and there was no doubt they were somehow involved in this very weird situation .. I quickly chucked the errand I was on, jumped in my car and sped away. I went straight t o the police station, told them what had happened, and found out I was part of a new, and very successful, scheme being used to gain entry into cars.

Two weeks later, my friend's son had a similar happening....While traveling, my friend's son stopped at a roadside rest to use the bathroom. When he came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later, someone had gotten into his car and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator, briefcase.....you name it.

He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into, the police told him he had been a victim of the latest robbery tactic -- there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device..

They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and that they now have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car -- that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim, it will not be you.

When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting, it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain, it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be instantly stolen.

Brown Recluse Spider . . .

This has been around before, but at this time of year, it is worth seeing again.

It's summertime & cleanup is going on. Be careful where you put your hands. They like dark spaces & woodpiles, corners, sheds and any dark areas such as attics etc.

The Brown Recluse Spider is one of the most dangerous spider’s that we have here in the USA. A person can die from it's bite. We all should know what the spider looks like.

People will be digging around, doing yard work, spring cleaning etc.

Please be careful.

Spider bites are dangerous and can have permanent and highly negative consequences.

If you do have an attic or crawl space, go up there and turn on a light and leave it on for about 30 minutes before you go in to do your work. They may be lurking and waiting to attack!!!!

Please be careful and look before you do anything in an area that you can not see well!!!!!!!
