The Gator Tales

The Unofficial Newsletter of Lake Hammock Village David Schnopp Editor PRESIDENT’S CORNER We are hoping to have a great turnout at the next Homeowner’s Association Meeting. There are many things that are being planned. They are about to begin refurbishing the front gate area to make it more attractive. We hope to have more news to let everyone know about. Our first concern is the upcoming elections. We need volunteers to serve on the Nominating Committee. The main responsibility will be to find nominees willing to serve on the board. We will have four vacancies to fill this January. So let’s have a good turnout for the November HOA meeting. That’s about all for now, I hope everyone had a good summer.

MANAGER’S CORNER For all of those who have given time and effort to Lake Hammock Village. It’s a comfort to know that there are heroes among us, regular people just like you willing to do what they can to make the world a better place. Heroes give instead of take. They act instead of talk. They step forward and do the hard and unseen jobs, to give the best of themselves, measuring their own success not by wealth or comfort, but by the lives they touch along the way. That’s what heroes do, and you are one of those people. Maybe you don’t think of yourself that way but that’s what you are, and I just want to tell you how grateful I am to know you and to know that there are heroes like you in the world.

IMPORTANT REMINDER ---- Some of LHV's residents faithfully donated blood for the benefit of all. The office is located on 10th St. just beyond Jones Ave. ( soon to be H.C's Main Street) and giving blood is quick, easy, and painless. If ever needed, the blood is just a phone call away.

Page # 6 MAINLY FOR MEN On the night of October 11th, 1942, an American task force guarded the approaches to Guadalcanal. The force of four cruisers and five destroyers commanded by Rear Admiral Norman Scott sailed just north of Cape Esperance. At 23.25 (11:25pm), Radar contact was made with a Japanese force consisting of four cruisers and two destroyers under Admiral Arimoto Goto which was sailing towards Guadalcanal to reinforce and resupply Japanese troops. The Japanese force did not have radar and was not at battle stations as they approached the area. The Japanese were completely surprised when the American task force opened fire using radar spotting. During the twenty minute engagement, the Japanese lost one cruiser sunk and another cruiser and a destroyer damaged. The US task force lost one destroyer sunk and two cruisers and one destroyer damaged. They also prevented the Japanese supplies from getting through. The Editor

Remembering Oscar Craighton

REMEMBERING OSCAR CONTINUED

I am now living in Indiana for the summer. I live at 58 Sargent St for the winter but I was full time there until I lost my Jack to cancer in May of 07 and he requested to be returned to his home state of Illinois to be buried. Tomorrow will be his 85th birthday. I will let the birthday balloons go to heaven over his gravesite knowing Oscar is there with Jack. Jack thought so much of Oscar for he was a retired Air Force Officer and he and Jack spent much time talking about the military services. Jack was a Marine in the South Pacific during World War II. Whenever we needed help, Oscar and Olive were always there to lend a hand. We greatly valued their friendship over the years. They were practically the first residents of the park when it was known as Glen Este.

They had their last kiss on Saturday night and then Olive found him in deep heavenly sleep. Let us say that he met his lord in peace with no pain. I believe in angels and know I have another with the passing of Oscar Craighton. I’m glad that I told him I loved him before I left in June. He left the love of his life, Olive and also his young great granddaughter.

The Craighton’s were eager to help anyone in the park and always helped without any fanfare. They served on many committees to to make this a nicer place to call home. So we will miss our soldier of honor, a gentle giant among men.

I can not grieve for him for I know he is in a better place than most of us right now. You have to have that thought when you lose a soul mate. Norma Gossett My page has turned a chapter’s closed A brand new page for me unfolds And my new page will never turn Nor for the old page will I yearn For my new page is heaven you see I’m home with Jesus for eternity
