Manager Notes

Spring Clean Up.. As you are cleaning up your gardens, yards and shrubs after our long cold winter, please remember to check your lamp/mail box posts for needed cleaning and painting. Also remember to keep your carports cleaned up and clear of storage boxes, etc.

Within the next couple of weeks you will see landscapers‟ working on our entrance way outside the gate. This will be a nice attractive addition to our park and entrance. Our new “Lake Hammock” entrance monument should be in place soon as well.

Hope everyone enjoyed the LHV Memorial Day picnic out at our lake. The grills and picnic area is for all LHV residents use and enjoyment. If you plan on using the area for a „private gathering of friends and/or family‟ please reserve the area for the date and time you will need. The reservation sign up sheet are in the clubhouse.

Facts about June Gemstone: Pearl

Flower: Red rose

June marks the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere and the month of the Wimbledon tennis tournament in England. June takes its name from the Roman goddess Junno the goddess of marriage. For this reason, June has always been looked upon as the best month in which to marry: Married in the month of roses – June Life will be one long honeymoon. Flag Day (June 14th) is a day when Americans celebrate the flag by showing respect for the flag, its makers and designers. One of the main symbols of the United States of America is the flag. The original U.S. flag was authorized by Congress on Saturday, June 14, 1777. It had 13 stripes - 7 red and 6 white - that represent the original 13 colonies. There were 13 white stars in a blue field representing a new constellation. Since 1777, there have been different versions of the flag that have been adopted. The red and white stripes with blue constellation have remained the same. Each state in the union is represented by a 5 point star. The number of stars has changed as states joined the union. There are currently 50 states that belong to the United States of America. Father’s Day (June 20th) was conceived slightly more than a century ago by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., while she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm. A day in June was chosen for the first Father’s Day celebration — 100 years ago, June 19, 1910, proclaimed by Spokane’s mayor because it was the month of Smart’s birth. The first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent.

Humor A young cowboy from Texas goes off to college. Halfway through the semester, he has foolishly squandered all his money. He calls home. “Dad,” he says, “You won’t believe what modern education is developing! They actually have a program here in College Station that will teach our dog, Ol’ Blue how to talk!” “That’s amazing,” his Dad says. “How do we get Ol’ Blue in that program?” “Just send him down here with $1,000” the young cowboy says. “I’ll get him in the course.” So his father sends the dog and $1,000. About two-thirds of the way through the semester, the money again runs out, the boy call home. “So how’s Ol’ Blue doing son?” his father asks. “Awesome, Dad, he’s talking up a storm, but you just won’t’ believe this – they’ve had such good results they have started to teach the animals how to read!” “Read?” says his father, “No kidding! How do we get Blue into that program?” “Just sent $2,500, I’ll get him in the class.” The money promptly arrives. But our hero has a problem. At the end of the year, his father will find out the dog can neither talk, nor read. So he shoots the dog. When he arrives home at the end of the year, his father is all excited. “Where’s Ol’ Blue? I just can’t wait to see him read something and talk!” “Dad,” the boy says, “I have some grim news. Yesterday morning, just before we left to drive home, Ol’ Blue was in the living room, kicked back in the recliner, reading the Wall Street Journal, like he usually does. Then he turned to me and asked. “So, is your daddy still messing’ around with that young lady who lives in town?” The father exclaimed, “I hope you shot that son of a ------- before he talks to your Mother!” “I sure did, Dad!” “That’s my boy!” The kid went on to be a successful lawyer and then went into politics.

Dad is a person who is loving and kind, And often he knows what you have on your mind.

He's someone who listens, suggests, and defends. A dad can be one of your very best friends! He's proud of your triumphs, but when things go wrong, A dad can be patient and helpful and strong In all that you do, a dad's love plays a part. There's always a place for him deep in your heart. And each year that passes, you're even more glad, More grateful and proud just to call him your dad! Thank you, Dad... for listening and caring, for giving and sharing, but, especially, for just being you! Happy Father's Day

Proper Respect for the American Flag It is with pride that I point out the number of our residence who take great pride in displaying the American Flag which symbolizes the respect for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the love of our country. I find that the majority of the flags displayed with the community are in accordance with the recommended manner. All Constitutional codes can be found in detail in the United States code: Title 4, Chapter one. With this I would like to list just a few of the basic laws as follows: 1) The American Flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, floor, water or merchandise. 2) It is a universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset, however when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. 3) The flag should never be used as a wearing apparel, bedding, drapery or window dressing. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. It is probably most proper to have a spot light on the flag at night, however, if the street light reflects sufficient light this should satisfy (2) above. If you decide to have a spot light installed, we have residents that can install the light with a timer at a very reasonable price. We should honor and respect the American flag, our flag, every day; however you may wish to note the special days to fly the American flag: June 14th – Flag Day

November 11th – Veterans Day

July 4th – Independence Day

December 7th – Pearl Harbor

September 6th – Labor Day

December 16th – Battle of the Bulge

September 11th - Patriot Day

May 30th – Memorial Day

The Proper Respect for the American Flag article (page 13) was submitted by David Wakefield. For those that do not know me, I did serve 6 years in the US Army 82nd Airborne Division. My fathers and brother served in the US Navy with father being in WWII. Had a cousin, the only son of my aunt, who died in Korea and now I have a 21 year old grandson in the US Air Force who will be deployed any day. With my background and just like the good people of Lake Hammock Community, I take great pride in honoring and respecting the United States Flag of America. David L. Wakefield 160 Glen Este Ct The U.S. flag is a symbol of what Americans treasure; It represents the values We cherish beyond measure. Our flag flies high for freedom, For legal equality, For Constitutional rights, And justice for you and me. Our flag flies high for bravery, The courage it takes to fight And even give our lives For what we know is right. Our flag flies high for compassion; We quickly help those in need; When there’s a need for service, Americans take the lead. The American flag is an icon, Representing the American way; Our hearts swell with emotion, When we see it ripple and sway. By Joanna Fuchs
