August is the eighth month, renamed by the Romans from Sextilis', meaning sixth, to honor their emperor, Augustus.

The Anglo-Saxons called August Weod monath, which means Weed month, was in this month that weeds and other crops grew the fastest.

August is the height of the summer time in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. The longest day of the year is passed, but the hot days remain. In the northern regions and mountains, cool nights and early frosts lets one know that the summer is about to come to an end. In the Southern Hemisphere, August means the winter will soon be over.

The birds are already planning to fly south for the winter. The insects are noisier and numerous than in any other month. This is perhaps the busiest month for businesses, since most people take their vacations in August.

The Angel of August is Hamaliel August is a month for taking it easy. The long, languid days signal that it's time to slow our pace, working in rhythm with the heat, rather than trying to defy its influence upon us. The popular term for this is "going with the flow" ~ and those who have been out of sync with their surroundings know how frustrating it can be to try to swim against the current. Of course, sometimes you have to dive right in and do just that, but often you can reach the same destination by either relinquishing control temporarily to the flow or trying a cross-current approach instead. When you're struggling against something, call on Hamaliel to help you determine the best course of action to reach your goal.

August Happenings We are beginning our August activities with a shopping excursion along 27.

We will be checking out Southern Comfort Antiques, Bella’s Consignment, Century Cottages Antiques and Gifts and ending with a treat at Dundee Dairy Queen. This is scheduled for Wednesday the 4th. Carpool at 10 AM. The Activity Meeting for September will be at 2 PM on Thursday, August the 5th. Marilyn Smith and Georgianna Palmer will chair the meeting. This is open to everyone. Please come and share your ideas for activities in our community.

Tuesday, August 10th, the Ladies Luncheon will be at Harry’s Old Place in Winter Haven. They serve a business lunch and offer a choice of 4 entrees, drink and dessert for $9.99. As the lunch is served between 11:30 – 1 PM, we will carpool at 11 AM. Early Bird Dining will be on Monday, August 16th at Norby’s in Lake Wales, The special will be salmon or steak for $8.88 or you may choose from the Early Bird Menu., Carpool at 4:30 PM. Breakfast at R-Eatery is scheduled for 8:30 AM on Saturday, August 21st.

Sunday, August 22nd will be the day for Birthday Celebration at 6:30 PM. Come join us for cake and ice cream.

If you enjoy classic movies, on Sunday, August 22nd at 7 PM you can view one.

We are rounding out the month of August with our monthly Potluck on Tuesday, August 31st at 6 PM. If enough people would like to stay, we will have card games following potluck.

3 eggs beaten

1 cup milk

1 cup sugar

4 cups bread cubes (crust removed) 16-18 slices ¼ lb butter or margarine (I use margarine) 1 large can pineapple tidbits (natural juice) well drained Mix all ingredients well and place in 1 to 2 quart casserole. Bake 350 for 45 min.

(40 min in my Pyrex 2 qt dish).

We had a group of 40 and I hope the enthusiasm and participation continues for the rest of the summer events. Tammy Anthis I want to thank everyone for the many cards and phone calls after my hand surgery. I am doing better! Again thanks, for thinking of me. Donna Hunt I look forward to reading the "Gator Tales" each month. You are doing a wonderful job and I appreciate all your hard work. Humor (more how the fight started) I took my wife to a restaurant.

The waiter, for some reason, took my order first.

“I’ll have the strip steak, medium rare, please” He said, “Aren’t you worried about the mad cow?”

“Nah, she can order for herself.”

And that’s when the fight started….

My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping the channels.

She asked, “What’s on TV?” I said, “Dust.”

And then the fight started…

My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary…

She said, “I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 200 in about 3 seconds.”

I bought her a scale.

And then the fight started…

My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reuni9n and she kept starting at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table.

I asked her, “Do you know him?”

“Yes,” she sighed, “He’s my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn’t been sober since.”

“My God!” I said, “Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?”

And then the fight started…

Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat-related illness that can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures and inadequate or unbalanced replacement of fluids.

fainting

nausea or vomiting The skin may be cool and moist. The victim's pulse rate will be fast and weak, and breathing will be fast and shallow. If heat exhaustion is untreated, it may progress to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. Seek medical attention and call 911 immediately if: symptoms are severe, or

 

the victim has heart problems or high blood pressure.

Otherwise, help the victim to cool off, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or last longer than 1 hour.

Heat exhaustion treatment Cooling measures that may be effective include: 

cool, non-alcoholic beverages, as directed by your physician 
