Happy Labor Day Monday ~ September 6th

For your support, sympathy cards and kind words of condolence during my Mother’s recent illness and passing. Your expressions of sympathy have brought me a great deal of comfort as I grieve my Mother's death. Thank you again.

Wedding at the Lake On Tuesday, September 7th the daughter of our residents Jim and Sandy Nolan will be married out by our lake. The small intimate ceremony will be followed by a reception at the LHV clubhouse. The bride and groom are both members of the National Guard and the groom is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan the next day.

Lake Hammock Village says “THANK YOU” Stan and Jessica [bride and groom] for their service to our Country.

According to the Georgian calendar, September is the ninth month. But, on the Roman calendar, it was the seventh month. September has had 29 days, and 31 days; but, since the time of the emperor Augustus, it has had only 30 days.

September is one of the warmest months in the Southern United States.

Northern states have warm September days, but the nights get much cooler. It is also harvest time for crops. And, in Switzerland, it's called Harvest Month.

The Angel of September is Uriel September is a month of metamorphosis. Summer is fading and Autumn is preparing to unfold her glorious colors! This is the perfect time to tackle the neglected things. Perhaps the picket fence or shutters need a fresh coat of paint, or the landscaping needs some sprucing up. Perhaps you've been curious about a class or volunteer opportunity but haven't signed up yet. Or maybe it's something as simple as some phone calls to make or letters to write, reconnecting with people you've been thinking about but just haven't taken the time to contact. Small efforts can have enormous effects. Ask Uriel's wisdom in choosing the things you can do now that will yield the greatest dividends.

Holidays in September Five Jewish holidays are celebrated in September or early October. They are Rosh Ha-Shanah, or New Year; Tzom Gedaliah, a fast day; Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement; Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles; and Simhat Torah, a day of rejoicing.

Labor Day is observed as a legal holiday on the first Monday in September throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. The first Labor Day parade in New York City was held in September 1982. Two men are credited with playing an important role not only in bringing about the parade but the holiday as well.

Matthew Maguire, a machinist from Paterson, N.J., and Peter J. McGuire, a New York City carpenter who helped found the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, are said to have suggested a holiday to honor working people in the United States. In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday, and in 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day a national holiday.

September 12th, Grandparents Day is a special day to honor the grandparents. In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for Grandparents. Through concerted efforts on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign expanded statewide. Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) was especially instrumental in the project. The first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia by Governor Arch Moore. Also in 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the United States Senate. The resolution languished in committee.

Mrs. McQuade and her team turned to the media to garner support. They also began contacting governors, senators, and congressmen in every state. And they sent letters to churches, businesses, and numerous national organizations interested in senior citizens. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter.

September Happenings This month's events are mostly gathering of folks and sharing good food.

Our first event is a SALAD & SANDWICH LUNCH on Labor Day, Monday the 6th, at 12 noon followed by a MOVIE MARATHON. Friday evening, the 10th, all are invited for EARLY BIRD DINING at Southern Dunes; car-pooling at 4:30 p.m.

Our next eating experience will be BREAKFAST at R-Eatery on Saturday the 18th at 8:30 a.m.

Sunday, the 19th, being our monthly BIRTHDAY Celebration at 6:30 p.m. followed by CLASSIC MOVIE at 7 p.m.

Please join the residents for an EVENING MEAL at Sundays, RT 27 N, on Tuesday, the 21st, (This is a BY THE BOOK OUTING, but all are most welcome!!!); car-pooling at 4:30 p.m.

Our MONTHLY POT LUCK will be Monday, the 27th at 6 p.m.

LADIES' DAY-OUT will be on Thursday, the 30th, with lunch at Bob Evans, RT 27 S and an afternoon of shopping; car-pooling is at noon.

Please remember to volunteer to host a happening, to sign up when planning on attending, and to join us for these events and the Lake Hammock Village HOA meeting on Tuesday, the 14th, at 7p.m.

Observations on Growing Older ~Your kids are becoming you...and you don't like them ...but your grandchildren are perfect! ~Going out is good. Coming home is better! ~When people say you look "Great"... they add "for your age!" ~When you needed the discount you paid full price. Now you get discounts on everything ‌ movies, hotels, flights, but you're too tired to use them. ~You forget names ... but it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!!! ~The 5 pounds you wanted to lose is now 15 and you have a better chance of losing your keys than the 15 pounds. ~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything .... especially golf. ~Your husband is counting on you to remember things you don't remember. ~The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore. ~Your husband sleeps better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than he does in bed. It's called his "pre-sleep". ~Remember when your mother said "Wear clean underwear in case you GET in an accident"? Now you bring clean underwear in case you HAVE an accident! ~You used to say, "I hope my kids GET married .. Now, "I hope they STAY married!" ~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch.. ~When GOOGLE, ipod, email, modem ... were unheard of, and a mouse was something that made you climb on a table.

"what?"..."when?" ??? ~Now that you can afford expensive jewellery, it's not safe to wear it anywhere. ~Your husband has a night out with the guys but he's home by 9:00 P.M. ...next week it will be 8:30 P.M. ~You read 100 pages into a book before you realize you've read it. ~Notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"?!!! ~What used to be freckles are now liver spots. ~Everybody whispers. ~Now that your husband has retired ... you'd give anything if he'd find a job! ~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet ... 2 of which you will never wear.
