Facts about November The topaz is the November birthstone, and the special flower of the month is the chrysanthemum.

November is the eleventh month of the year according to the Gregorian calendar, which is used in almost all the world today. It takes its name from novem, the Latin word for nine. In the early Roman calendar, November was the ninth month. Because July was named for Julius Caesar and August for Augustus Caesar, the Roman Senate offered to name the eleventh month for Tiberius Caesar. He refused modestly, saying, "What will you do if you have thirteen emperors?" Originally there were 30 days in November, then 29, then 31. From the time of Augustus, it had 30 days.

November comes between autumn and winter. In the North Temperate regions during November, the trees are bare, and the dead leaves on the earth have lost the brilliant color they had in October. Soft snow seldom hides the bareness of the fields, but the grays and browns of the landscapes are sometimes relieved by delightful days of hazy sunshine. The Anglo-Saxons referred to November as "the wind month" and sometimes "the blood month," probably because during this period they killed animals for their winter meat.

Many outdoor activities in the North come to a halt in November. The crops have been stored or shipped to processing plants and mills, and farmers know whether or not they have had a successful year. Near the end of November, the people of the United States celebrate Thanksgiving Day. The Pilgrims celebrated the first New England Thanksgiving to express gratitude for their first harvest in the new land. In Canada, where the colder climate forces farmers to harvest crops earlier, Thanksgiving is celebrated in October. Football is the outstanding sport in November. The weather is usually ideal for football. Spectators watch their favorite teams play in the sometimes frosty air.

Holidays in November Election Day in the United States is the day set by law for the election of public officials.

It occurs on the Tuesday after the first Monday of November. The earliest possible date is November 2 and the latest possible date is November 8. Election Day is November 2, 2010 this year.

Veterans Day honors men and women who have served in the United States armed services. Veterans Day is a legal federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated on November 11th. The United Kingdom celebrates November 11 as Armistice Day. It is not a legal holiday, but special observances celebrate the armistice that ended World War I on Nov. 11, 1918. Canada has a legal holiday called Remembrance Day that is celebrated on November 11. Veterans Day celebrations in the United States include parades and speeches. Special services are held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, on Veterans Day. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day to remind Americans of the tragedies of war. A 1938 law made the day a federal holiday. In 1954, Congress changed the holiday's name to Veterans Day to honor all United States veterans. ~Above Information from The World Book Encyclopedia~ Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival where people thank the harvest and express gratitude in general. Mainly celebrated in Canada and the United States of late it has been considered as a secular holiday.

It started a long time back. During the ancient times the farmers used to believe that the crops that they harvest contain spirits. And they get released when the crops are harvested which might come as a threat to the farmers. To destroy these spirits the farmers used to celebrate these harvest festivals. Thanksgiving or these kinds of harvest festivals were prevalent in ancient Greece, Egypt, China and Rome.

History has lot of controversies about the time when Thanksgiving started. However, the first traditional Thanksgiving was revered at Plymouth Plantation in the year 1621. Today, it is celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November and the second Monday in October in Canada. Thanksgiving dinner is held on this day with family and friends.

The present day of Thanksgiving was initiated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt 1939 later in 1941 the Congress approved it.

November Happenings Our month starts out with the HOA Board meeting on Tuesday, November 2nd at 7 PM. The Activities committee will be meeting on Thursday, November 4th at 2 PM. We need more people on the committee, so that we would have enough for everyone to do 1 month a year. Please come to the meeting. It’s not hard work.

Saturday, November 6th from 7-10 PM we will be having a “Welcome Dance” with a D.J. from our own park, Ron and Arlene Plouffe. It will be B.Y.O. drinks and snacks to share. We will have a raffle, 1/$1.00 or 3/$2.00. The HOA is paying for the D.J. and the raffle gift. Hope every one of you will come. We will have a good time.

Tuesday, November 9th at 7 PM will be the HOA meeting. Please attend.

Thursday, November 11th at 8:30 AM we will celebrate Veteran’s Day at our coffee time. Coffee time will be moved from Wednesday to Thursday. We will have a small ceremony. Elaine Blake will lead us in song and sing a solo.

Saturday, November 13th at 8:30-noon will be our Garage Sale. Three dollars will be collected for each driveway selling items. George Palmer is chairman.

Monday, November 15th at 4:30 PM (carpooling) we will be Dining Out for our “Early Bird Dinner” at “T Bones”. Come and join us for some good food and conversation.

Friday, November 19th at 9:30 AM (carpooling) our ladies will be going to the “Auburndale Flee Market”. After a couple of hours at the Flee Market we will go to “Richards” for lunch.

Saturday, November 20th at 8:30 AM we will meet at “R-Place Eatery” for breakfast. Join us for a nice start of the day.

Sunday, November 21st we will celebrate our birthdays & anniversaries at 6:30 PM at the clubhouse. Everyone is invited, even if it isn’t you birthday or anniversary month. A movie will follow.

Thursday, November 25th is our Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner at 1 PM. The HOA pays for the turkeys and hams. We are going to start charging for GUESTS this year. The cost will be: adults $4.00, children age 5-12 $2.00, under age 5 free. You must pay for guests 1 week ahead to Lori Johnsen at 151 Glen Este Blvd.

We will finish out the month with Crafts on Monday, November 29th at 1 PM. We will be making Christmas ornaments. Come and have fun.

Dining by the book will be on Monday, November 29th at 4:30 PM (carpooling).

It’s Here! The Enjoyment Book The Enjoyment Book is still $30 for a year’s two for one specials that include dining, sports events, and services. It’s available at 72 Sargent St., either cash or checks made out to L.H.V. Any questions please call Mary Ann Donovan at 422-3465.

Welcome Back Dance Saturday, November 6th - 7-10 pm

DJ Ron Please allow me to introduce our DJ service. My wife and I have teamed up in order to provide your event or party with professional entertainment.

We get people involved and it won’t break the bank. We have a large library of music to pick from so the music never stops. There are many good time songs included in our library. Songs that everyone knows so they can sing along as they dance. We get people excited by playing the right song at the right volume at the right time. I have been here since this great nation was formed, I have seen each battle fought I have seen the heroes die for me, for my country Thank you all those of you Who have kept me flying in the breeze Keeping this country united as one.

Thank you all those of you who have ever fought, I am ever grateful for you.

You risked everything; you faced death each day, Faced fear, faced many terrible things.

And because of you, my thank you's ring out, Filling the sky, echoing from the hills They find their way to the graveyards, And to all of you still living, You are a special kind of person.

New Events to Join in the park If interested sign up at the clubhouse

Line Dance Class We are learning line dance on Thursdays, at 11:00 AM in the club house. The class is taught by Andy & Nancy Belski. If you know how to dance or think you have two left feet come to our fun class.

Shuffle Board League We need a group of men and women to play shuffle board on Tuesday’s at 10:00 AM. Come on down and join us. Teams will be drawn on the day of play.

Bunco Group Strictly speaking, Bunco is a game of dice, played in rounds.

Players take turns rolling the dice and trying to accumulate as many points as possible to win each round. The game is played at tables of four in competing teams of two.

Now we're going to tell you the truth...

Bunco is a social event. It's a party. It's a blast!

Twelve of us get together once a month, leaving the cares and worries behind.

We fall off our diets, snacking on M&Ms, Chex-Mix, or anything else we can get our hands on. We drink our favorite spritzer, Chardonnay, or Drink-of-the-night, and we talk. Oh yeah, and we play a silly, mindless dice game with wild abandon, hoping to take home a few more sheckles then we arrived with.

For all members there may be a vote on issues needed and your vote is important

Activities Committee Needs Your Help Your Activities Committee meets once a month for about 1 hour to plan monthly activities for our park residents. We would like to have at least 12 members so that each member only needs to be in charge of one month a year. If we have more members then we can have a monthly chairperson and a co-chairperson. All residents full time, winter residents, and renters are encouraged to come with your help and suggestions.

Responsibilities of Monthly Activities Chairperson 1. In charge of monthly planning meeting (you run the meeting but everyone gives suggestions for activities).

2. Submit article for Gator tales re: activities for that month.

3. Signup sheets (You give a list of the activities, dates, times to Judy Dixon) 4. Find or host the events.

5. Calling restaurants to set up for reservations.

6. Activity folder passed on to next month’s chairperson

Old Business A. Still no volunteer for yard sale. Will ask for volunteer at HOA meeting next week. If no one volunteers the event will be canceled.

VII.

New Business A. Board decided that $12,000 in bank account belonged to HOA. Discussion had been around part being a legal fund. Motion made by Walter Strohmaier, seconded by Herman Biba.

B. With Walter Strohmaier being acting President he needed a copy of the minutes stating Judy Dixon’s resignation for securing a new signature card at the bank.

Donna Chilton to get signed copy to him before the HOA meeting on October 12.

Motion to close meeting by Donna Chilton, seconded by Gail Seal. Meeting adjourned by majority vote at 7:45 PM.

New Business A. Marileigh Osborn has 3 people to run for the board.

B. Richard Spiegel stated we should ask owners to negotiate rent. We cannot for 4 years.

C. George Palmer and Herb Hunt volunteered to run the Yard Sale planned for November 13.
