March is a month of opposing forces. It's warm enough for rain one day and cold enough for snow the next ~ but this can be laughed off in the face of brighter days ahead. The sight of the first crocus is cause for celebration! March is an ideal time to reflect on the opposing facets of ourselves. For instance, why do we sometimes give freely and other times seem a bit stingy? Or why do we sometimes face a situation with a sunny disposition while at other times we have a gloomy outlook? March is a two-faced month, and it invites us to examine our two natures as well.

For the month of March, the traditional birthstones are aquamarine and bloodstone.

Aquamarine is believed to be a soothing stone which can quell fears, protect, provide foresight, courage, and happiness. As a healing stone, it is said to be effective as a treatment for anxiety and in the Middle Ages it was thought to reduce the effect of poisons. Bloodstone represents fortitude and strength and is believed to attract abundance and wealth. The flower for March is the daffodil, representing rebirth since it is one of the first flowers of spring.

Special Days March has no national holidays, but there are several important state and religious holidays. Nebraskans celebrate the admission of their state to the Union on March 1st.

Texas celebrates March 2nd as the anniversary of its independence from Mexico. On March 4th, the people of Pennsylvania commemorate the granting of the state's charter to William Penn in 1681. The Irish celebrate March 17th as the feast day of St. Patrick. In Maryland, March 25th is set apart for a celebration of the arrival of the first Maryland colonists in 1634. The Jewish festival of Purim usually occurs in March. It is held on the day corresponding to the 14th day of Adar on the Hebrew calendar.

MANAGERS REPORT

Thank you to our residents with dogs........No complaints!

Now a few of our residents with ‘cats’ need to be reminded that our Rules and Regulations regarding pets apply to you as well....cats are not allowed to run around the park without being on a leash outside of your home. I have received many complaints about ‘resident’ cats roaming around our park. Please bring your cat inside and do not let them roam the park. Thank you.

The front entrance ‘Rendezvous’ area is now finished and available to all residents for your enjoyment. Thank You to Bill and Leon for their labor and design of our ‘Rendezvous’ area. Another Thank You to Ron and Barb Cowles for their donation of the Pelican Waterfall.

The lemon tree is producing lemons this year...pick and enjoy. The Florida Peach and Tangelo tree hopefully will start producing for us next year.

Be sure to attend the ‘Lake Hammock Village Health & Wellness Fair, at the clubhouse on Thursday, March 8th * 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Free lunch & health screens and various health professionals and services will have tables set up with lots of information and resources for us. Door prizes!

Allan, our ‘knife sharpener’ man, apologizes for missing February. He was in a minor car accident and was unable to be here for his scheduled day. He will be here again on Monday, March 5th and Monday, April 2nd.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE WOW! I am getting excited about the happenings at Lake Hammock Village. A big thank you has to go out to Jerry Butler for offering to co-ordinate the Easter (Golf Cart) parade on April 7th. And the HOA Board has offered to follow the parade with a lakeside cook-out. Come out and join the parade and everyone should come to the free cook-out after!

I have challenged the residents to help out with activities over the next several months and planning should start now. How about a Memorial Day activity and a 4th of July* activity? The pool party last year was a huge success, how about a repeat? A Labor Day party, a Welcome Back dance or other great ideas should also be considered.

Now, perhaps we need to ask each street to host an activity (paid for by the HOA) or, have a state or group of states host an activity. I’ll speak to the residents from Canada but that activity will have to wait until we return next winter.

I’m looking forward to residents bringing ideas by the March or at least the April Board meeting. We need groups of leaders and great ideas.

Speaking of marking your calendar – keep Tuesday, April 3rd open for the “Share Your Hobby” at the clubhouse. And we need help to make the March 24th Yard Sale another huge success. p.s. I’m considering a fish fry on Sunday, March 18th (cost $5.00). I have at least 3 residents ready to help. The sign-up sheet is at the clubhouse. If enough people sign up we will make it happen.

And, let’s all remember ……..

Retirement is a journey not a destination.

And a journey should be fun with lots of activity. *On July 1st we’ll be having a big Canada Day Party at our home on Stoney Lake.

You are all invited. If you all come, sleeping quarters may be tight. Or stay here, celebrate your great holiday on the 4th and email me pictures.

LAKE HAMMOCK VILLAGE HOMEOWNER’S ASSOC. MONTHLY GENERAL MEETING FEBRUARY 14, 2012 ATTENDANCE: 8 members present

A. CALL TO ORDER: President called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM followed by the Salute to the flag.

B. ANNOUCEMENT: President announced an increase to the Board to 8 members. Two new members were introduced.

C. SPECIAL REQUEST: Manager had some visitors coming. The Haines City Police Dept. was to stop by and introduce a few new officers to the residents but they were held up with keeping our community safe and could not appear.

D. PREVIOUS MINUTES: President reported that the Annual Meeting minutes were posted.

E. TREASURER’S REPORT: As of January 31, 2012 the Checking acct. balance was $4,482.89 and the Savings acct. balance was $12,025.93. Motion to accept, Second .

Carried F. OFFICERS REPORT 1. Front Gate: President explained that a committee was formed within the Board.

They are going to research the pros and cons as to having the front gate open or closed during the daytime hours, then report back to the Board for further evaluation.

2. Memorial Tree: A resident’s idea was brought to the Board’s attention. A Memorial Tree located at the front gate’s new patio area would be nice to acknowledge the passing of former residents. There would also be a plaque. This would be accomplished by the help of donations from the residents. They can be given to the Board Members or Sally Phillips.

3. No Alcohol provided by the HOA: This will have further discussion by the Board.

4. No Outside Charity when HOA funds are used for activity: This will have further discussion by the Board.

5. Reserve Fund: This will be in reference to replacing items like a copier and a BBQ grill. This will be discussed at the Board meeting.

G. MANAGER’S REPORT: There will be a Day Patrol Meeting on February 24th at 4:00 PM. We still have an issue with outside cats. Please keep your cat inside because if outside, they could be trapped and go to the County Shelter.

H. COMMITTEE REPORT: 1. Welcome -- We have 2 new residents and details will be in the Gator Tales.

2. Activities -- An AARP Drivers Course will be on March 19th at 8:30 AM. This is a 6 hour course.

3. FMO -- Be aware of Mobile Home Insurers that are not in good standings with the FMO.

I. OLD BUSINESS 1. Memorial Service -- March 11th at 4:00 PM at the hall, refreshments will be available. The deadline for pictures and names is March 3rd. Our appreciation is extended to a resident for coordinating the list for the Memorial Service and to another resident for helping with the refreshments.

2. Yard Sale -- March 24th from 8:00-12:00. Still needs various volunteers especially for traffic control and taxis. Sign -up sheets for the bake sale and for those who intend to hold a yard sale are posted in the clubhouse.

J. NEW BUSINESS 1. Easter Parade and Cook Out, April 7th , details in the Gator Tales.

2. The Community Gospel Concert will perform at the clubhouse Palm Sunday, April 1 st at 6:00 PM. 3. Future Activities -- We need more ideas along with a possible Fish Fry on March 18th.

We have a lot of other holidays that we could celebrate. Get your ideas to a Board member as soon as possible.

K. ADJOURNMENT: President adjourned meeting at 8:00 PM

LAKE HAMMOCK VILLAGE SPRING YARD SALE It’s coming.

Get ready.

Saturday, March 24th from 8:00 – 12:00.

Yard Sale Co-ordinators Phyllis Lennox (353-3122) and Mary Morin (3531023) with the guidance of Donna Hunt (419-9230), respectfully request that you consider volunteering to make the Yard Sale another success.

We need help with food sales (coffee & donuts, baking, hot dogs), taxi drivers and traffic control.

Once again we call upon all the fabulous Lake Hammock Village bakers to make the bake sale successful. Please bring bake sale goods to the Clubhouse by 4:00, Friday March 23. The Bake Sale is open to residents on Friday night from 6:30 – 7:30p.m.

The cost is $3.00 per carport to hold a yard sale. Donna and Herb Hunt will be around to collect the fee on Friday, March 23rd.

At the conclusion of the Yard Sale, Lighthouse Ministries will collect any leftover items you wish to donate. Please put your unwanted items at the end of your driveway for pick-up.

Sign up sheets can be found in the Clubhouse or contact Donna, Mary or Phyllis. The Yard Sale is an important event which generates revenue for the HOA. Success depends on the willingness of our residents to get involved and help. It’s a great way to promote the sense of community for which Lake Hammock Village has always been known.

We thank you in advance for making this the best Yard Sale we’ve ever had.

2012 Golf Cart Easter Parade On Saturday, April 7th we will be having an Easter Parade and BBQ for all Lake Hammock Residents. This parade is not just for golf carts but for pets and ladies showing off their original Easter bonnets. The parade route will begin at the clubhouse at 11:30 am and proceed along all the LHV streets then conclude back at the lake to be followed by a HOA sponsored BBQ and award ceremony at 12:30 PM. Please sign up for this event in the clubhouse.

Prizes will be awarded in three categories: 1) Best decorated Golf Cart 2) Most original Ladies Easter Bonnet 3) Pet Easter Outfits (dog & cats).

Did You Know?



Shamrock: As per the legends, while explaining the Holy Trinity to the pagans, he used the three leaf clover. Another legend says that the Celtic people used to consider the shamrock as the holy plant symbolizing the rebirth of spring.

Shamrocks are the national emblem of Ireland.



Leprechauns: The leprechauns are Irish fairies who look like old men and are around 2 feet tall. They are often depicted as a shoemaker wearing asymmetrical hats and aprons. Legends say that they are unfriendly, make the shoes for other fairies and carry a pot of gold. If they are caught they can be threatened of physical injuries to tell where their hidden pot of gold is. A leprechaun captor must keep his eye on it because he can trick the person and vanish.



Green: Wearing the color green has become one of the traditions of St. Patrick’s Day. But initially the color for the holiday was blue. In the late 19th century this color was replaced by green to pay tribute to the ‘Emerald Island’ or Ireland. It is believed that wearing the color green on St. Patrick’s Day brings good luck. Pinching the person who doesn’t wear green on this day is an age old tradition which is still followed.



Corned Beef and Cabbage:The traditional meal on St. Patrick’s Day is corned beef and cabbage which is half Irish. Cabbage was the staple food in Ireland and during previously it was served with Irish bacon. When the immigrants came to America, they couldn’t afford the bacon and replaced it with corned beef.

Cards & Games There has been an interest expressed for various card games to be played in the club house. If you have a game you would like to play then sign up in the clubhouse with your name, card game, and a good time to play. We will then try and get groups together.
