May is one of the most beautiful months of the year in the North Temperate Zone. The first garden begins to sprout in May. The wild flowers are blooming, and the trees and grasses have turned green. Wild flowers that bloom in different parts of America are the forsythia, dogwood, violets, and jack-in-the-box. Many birds have built their nests, and mother birds are sitting on the eggs, which will soon hatch.

Special Days in May: Many Mexican Americans celebrate what they call Cinco De Mayo, on May 5th. It is the anniversary of the Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862. It is a national holiday in Mexico.

The Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky. It is the most famous horse race in the United States.

Mother's Day was first observed in 1908. It was designated by Presidential proclamation, and was recognized officially by Congress and the President in 1914. It is celebrated in honor of Mothers on May 13th.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on May 19th. The United States honors the men and women of the military services. The Armed Forces Day Celebration combined the Army, Navy, and the Air Force in 1950. Prior to that year, they had been held at separate times.

Memorial Day or Decoration Day is observed, in most states of the United States, the last Monday in May. It is a legal holiday and is observed in memory of those who died while serving the United States in war.

Happy Mother’s “Day Sunday,, May 13th

As our winter residents head back North for the summer… we wish you a safe trip, have a great summer and we look forward to your return in the Fall/Winter.

At our May 8th Home Owners Association meeting we will have a guest speaker from the Haines City Police Department speaking to us regarding „identity theft, scams, and general safety and security against such”.

Again …a reminder to residents NOT to feed the stray cats in our park.

A few residents have been seen leaving food dishes in their yard/driveway for the feral cats. As per Polk County and Haines City ordinance: by feeding the stray cats, you are considered to be „responsible‟ for them which include: their immunizations, neuter and spraying of the cat and license fees. Non compliance could result in your being fined.

Again …a reminder to our Dog Owners ~

Per our Rules and Regulations Item 15: “Aggressive or noisy pets will not be permitted….. Owners must keep their pets (cats included) on a leash when outside the home.” There have been several complaints regarding „aggressive dogs, barking dogs and pets NOT being on a leash at all times outside your home. As well as the continuing complaint of dog owner‟s allowing their dog(s) to use other resident‟s yards for your dog‟s relieving of themselves and of course the discourteous owners behavior of not „scooping the poop” anywhere in the park.

The responsibility of your dog‟s barking, aggressiveness, having a leash on and where it does its‟ business is YOUR responsibility as the resident.

Please be respectful and courteous to your fellow residents and abide by our Rules and Regulations. Thank you.

Home at last. After 2 ½ day’s travel and 1526 miles, we reached our home on Stoney Lake, Ontario. The beauty of the Blue Ridge is remarkable but the journey through Pennsylvania is forever – 230 miles long! The “cross your fingers” moment occurs when we test that everything in and around the house is working. Thankfully, this year it was. While spring came early, the recent cool weather slowed down the buds and they are just now continuing their growth.

I had a lot of time to think on the way home. The topic of identity theft and “senior” scams were at the top of my agenda. However, the following items also made my check list: 1. Your will – When was it last updated? Has something in your life changed so that it should be updated? Does the executor need changing?

2. Power of Attorney – Are both your health and financial power of attorney up to date? Does the person who is assigned know where to find them?

3. Banking – Are all of your banking (including investments) jointly held? Ask your bank what happens to your accounts and investments if you or your spouse/partner are incapacitated.

I know that many of us review these items annually, (even if it is just a mental checklist), but I am always surprised at the unfortunate problems that arise from the “I was going to get around to it” group. They, along with the “nothing bad is going to happen” group lead to the tragic stories that we so often hear.

I hope my thoughts are helpful even if you simply remind yourself that you do have everything in order.

May brings Memorial Day (Monday, May 28th) which was originally named Decoration Day. It’s a great opportunity to thank your veterans for their service to your country. Plan to join in the flag service and the potluck lunch.

And remember, even during the hot summer days – all of us must work at having a great day. Start your day with a hug and at least six “good mornings” to neighbours.

Yard Sale Report March 24th saw many potential buyers enter the front gate of Lake Hammock Village.

Thanks to the efficient pre-planning of Coordinator Donna Hunt and the vigilant volunteer traffic controllers, the traffic moved smoothly throughout the park. Visitors were treated to fresh coffee and donuts, fantastic bake sale goods, bar-b-qued hot dogs and cold drinks. All of which was only possible through the efforts of the terrific residents of LHV. We had 64 people attend the Sunday, March 25th Fish Fry and from what I have been told (probably a fish tale), it was a great success! Led by the cooking team of Carl, Norm and Phil (a.k.a.

Phyllis), we enjoyed delicious fried flounder. One highlight of the dinner was the “make your own sundae” for dessert. Barb, Judy and Joanne handled ticket sales and the support team of Jan, Mary, Joan and Jerry kept the meal moving. It made my job of passing out prizes almost easy: - Nanci Emery won the free dinner -

The additional help of Mary Ann, Joanne and Barb made the clean up so much easier. (If I have missed acknowledging someone who helped, blame it on my senior’s memory). Thanks to you all.

A highlight of the fish fry occurred when we found a sticker on a bag of biscuits that invited you to submit a code online and Sam’s Club would donate 10 meals to a homeless shelter within our zip code.

We brought the fish fry in on budget and hope that everyone had a great time.

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO HAVE DIED AT HOME AND ABROAD

By Bill Ellis Special to ASSIST News Service In the United States and other nations it is customary to have a special day on which to remember those who have died. Though they are absent from us they are remembered with love and respect.

Since the Civil War we have honored those who have died in military service. This was first done on May 5, 1866, in Waterloo, New York, largely through the efforts and leadership of a druggist by the name of Henry W. Welles. Flags and flowers were used to decorate the graves of soldiers.

Many still refer to it as “Decoration Day.” It is a time when family members go to the cemetery where loved ones are buried. They clean the gravesite and leave flowers. As you drive by a cemetery on “Memorial Day” you will see flowers and flags on most of the graves.

By Presidential Proclamation in 1971 it was stated that Memorial Day would be officially observed as a legal public holiday on the last Monday of May. It will be my privilege to join with other family members, mostly cousins, at the home of Margaret Hodge, on the Sunday before that special Monday. Margaret is a delightful host and will see to it that we have plenty to eat and time to visit and recall childhood days.

After our dinner (that’s what we always called the noon meal) has had time to settle a bit, most of us will drive to the family cemetery which is up Sugar Camp Hollow, nestled among the trees on the side of a West Virginia mountain. Some will have pen and paper in hand to gather facts for the family genealogy.

Others will have a camera. We will take note of the graves of grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers, sisters, an uncle who died during the days of World War II, and other family members.

After we have read the tombstone messages and reminisced, we will have a prayer of gratitude and then cousins Kermit Hodge and Freda Hudnall will lead all of us in a few verses of several hymns our family has sung across the years.

Recently, I read that a graveyard for English soldiers following a war years ago in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) had been found. It had become a trash dump. While others paid little attention to their passing over the years of time there was a day when loved ones mourned their death.

Those who forget to remember may have difficulty understanding why they are alive and to what noble purpose they were born. In every country the oral traditions are passed from one generation to another.

Listen carefully to what family members pass on to you, especially your parents, aunts and uncles, for those are the things that will someday bring direction, hope, and tranquility to your life.

Carl Yoder once wrote about, “Things to remember: the value of time; the success of perseverance; the pleasure of working; the worth of character; the power of kindness; the influence of example; the obligation of duty; the wisdom of economy; the virtue of patience; the sound of laughter; the joy of originating; the thrill of accomplishing.”

Take time to remember and to express your deep gratitude for those who touched your life and made a lasting and positive difference. Let Memorial Day be a very special day for you.

Tuesday/Wednesday, June 5th & 6th – Casino Trip - $112 ppdo – We’ll visit Coconut Creek Seminole Casino receive $25 in free play and $5 meal voucher. Enjoy a visit to the Hollywood Seminole Hard Rock Casino and receive $25 in free play and $5 meal voucher.
