This is a month for taking it easy. The long, languid days signal that it's time to slow our pace, working in rhythm with the heat, rather than trying to defy its influence upon us. The popular term for this is "going with the flow" ~ and those who have been out of sync with their surroundings know how frustrating it can be to try to swim against the current. Of course, sometimes you have to dive right in and do just that, but often you can reach the same destination by either relinquishing control temporarily to the flow or trying a cross-current approach instead.

August is a rare month in which there are no National Holidays that are observed all across the United States. However, that does not mean that people have not adopted August as a month to highlight their favorite cause. August has been designated National Immunization Awareness Month, National Win With Civility Month, and Neurosurgery Outreach Month. It contains National Elvis Week and National Resurrect Romance week, perhaps for those who have forgotten to observe national girlfriend day, which is on the first day of the month.

The Dog Days of August are frequently referred to in literature and in common parlance.

When someone mentions Dog Days they are usually referring to the hot and humid days that seem to stifle activity and make the average commuter long for the beach or an airconditioner. The name, "Dog Days", comes from the star Sirius - also called the Dog Star.

It is the brightest star in the night sky, but in summer it conjoins with the sun (meaning we can't see it from the Earth because the sun comes between us and it). The ancients believed that Sirius emitted heat that affected the Earth. When the sun and the dog star came together, they thought it increased the heat level on the planet. Since this conjunction of sun and star occurred throughout August, the name Dog Days stuck to the month.

Manager's Report Summer is upon us and we have been getting some much needed rain. Even the lake has come up about 10 inches! Yea! Everyone’s yard and landscaping is looking green and attractive. Visitors to the park are always complimenting us on how nice everyone’s home and landscaping is and how warm and welcoming our ‘Village Rendezvous’ is. Great to see so many residents enjoying the area as well.



Thank you to the ‘few’ residents who volunteer their time to keep our entrance area outside the gates and inside the gates, our park streets and the lake area clean of your trash, cigarette butts and debris.

Their dedication to keeping Lake Hammock Village attractive and clean is much appreciated. Thank you!



Thank‟s to “whoever you are” for cleaning the boat ramp up so that the fishing boats can be

launched. Very much appreciated!



It is that time of the year to check our homes, carports and lamp posts to see if they are in need of cleaning and/or repairs. There are several homes that are in need of washing (some only on part of the home…green is not an attractive color!) As well as there are some lamp posts that are in need of cleaning and painting. Carports are not to be used for ‘storage’ of boxes, etc. Your cooperation in maintaining the appearance of your home with cleaning, repairs and a clean carport will keep up the high standards and attractive park we live in. Thank you.



GATES We all know that we have had ‘problems’ at various times with our gates. The other night being one of those times. They are again working properly but I MUST REQUEST that you do NOT use your vehicle to push open the gates or try to force them open when they are malfunctioning. I witnessed one of our residents doing exactly that! This action could damage the gates mechanism, as well as damage your vehicle. This action does not ‘fix’ the malfunction of the gate!

President’s Report Welcome to August. It’s very unusual, but we in the north, are looking for cooler weather during this month. July has been extremely hot and humid (almost like Florida weather) and rain has been scarce. Every day we hear discussions about the farm crops in distress. And everything is ripening earlier. Last Saturday at the Farmer’s Market the Niagara peaches were in – two weeks early.

Canada Day was a huge success here at Stoney Lake with fun and games for all ages. Now we turn the corner and look forward (but not in a hurry) to Labor Day. I’m sure the grandchildren want the summer days to go very slowly.

My memories keep skipping back to my youth when you left home after breakfast, came in when you were hungry, and had to be home when the street lights came on. There were always enough kids for a ball game along with tag, kick-the-can and hide-and-seek. No one spent time indoors as there was no television, no computers or video games. There were no popsicles (store bought or home-made). Freshie and grab bags of penny candy were the highlights on a hot day. And everybody played with everybody. My memory minimizes the daily problems of scrapes, cuts and hurt feelings and focuses on the joy of a child’s summer.

Enough reminiscing – but it is fun to take a slow hot day and remember those days and smile.

I understand that the pool party is currently being organized for Labor Day weekend. And given last year’s success it is a “must attend” event.

Lake Hammock Village will miss Ron and Arlene Plouffe, not only because they were great neighbours, but we no longer have a resident DJ for our dances. We are currently searching the area for a replacement DJ for the Welcome Back Dance. If you know of someone please share the name with one of the Board Members.

Celine Therrien (180 Glen Este Blvd) Celine is a house mate of Pauline Wells. She moved here from New Hampshire. She previously worked at Catholic Medical Center in the Finance Dept. She has 4 children and 3 grandchildren. Celine enjoys reading, needle work, sewing, theme parks, hospital volunteering, church community service and bargain shopping at thrift stores. ___________________________________________________________________

Believe I speak for all the residents here in thanking Rene’ & Terry DeJane &Karen & Bill Patelunas (plus any other helpers) in presenting us a fantastic Fourth of July Picnic at our clubhouse! The decorations were great, plus the food and time together were also so appreciated. Thank you all for giving us a “bang up” Fourth!

Saturday, December 8th – First Baptist Church of Orlando presents “Singing Christmas Trees” – Tickets will be around $18 pp and we will car pool from the clubhouse. Reservations must be made by September 1st. Sign up in the clubhouse.

Thurs day, December 13th – Arabian Nights presents The World’s Greatest Holiday Show on horses. The cost will be $37 pp which includes the Great Hall pre-show entertainment and appetizer buffet, your entrée and dessert, unlimited Pepsi-cola products, tax, tip, and of course the incredible show. For $5 pp extra you can have unlimited beer & wine (can be purchased the night of the show. I have reserved 20 tickets but can add more if needed. Reservations by December 1 st . We will carpool at need to arrive at the theater by 4:30 for a 6:00 pm show.

The activities committee would like to plan a dinner theater show for Sept., Dec. (Arabian Nights), March, and June. Places we will be checking out include: Titanic, Poluesial Luau at Sea World, Treasure Tavern, Pirate’s Dinner Adventure, Medieval Times, Capone’s Dinner Theater, and Magic Comedy. If you have any suggestions (dinner theaters, day trips) please let me know.

Useful Information I read about a woman who used her Solar Lights inside the house at night when the electric power went off during a hurricane. She stuck them in jars and bottles and said they gave off plenty of 'free light' in each room. She put them outside in the daytime and brought them back inside at night for several days while the power was off. They are safe to use and cheaper than batteries.

The Broken Lawn Mower: When our lawn mower broke and wouldn’t run, my wife kept hinting to me tha t I should get i t fixed.

But, somehow I always had something else to take ca re of first, the truck, the car, playing gold.

Always something more i mportant to me.

Finally she thought of a clever way to ma ke her point.

When I arrived home one day, I found her sea ted in the tall gra ss, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors, I watched silently for a short ti me and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I ca me out again I handed her a toothbrush.

I said, “When you finish cutting the gra ss, you might as well sweep the d riveway.”

Card Games On Tuesday afternoons at 1:00 PM in the clubhouse there have been a few of us gathering to play Hand & Foot. This card game is very similar to Canasta. If you would like to play Hand & Foot or Canasta please join us on Tuesdays at 1:00 PM.

Mark your calendar: “BUNCO” game is coming in September

A new game of Bunco is scheduled for approximately the 2nd Friday in September and monthly thereafter on every 2nd Friday @ 7:00 PM. The first Bunco game will be held in the clubhouse and then depending on the number attending the following months could be held at individual homes or continue at the clubhouse.

This is very easy dice game and no thinking involved. You can learn this in 5 minutes and we have people who have played the game who are ready to teach it. This will be for both men and women and it’s for tables in multiples of 4 people. There is a signup sheet posted in the clubhouse to see how many interested people we will have. So ask your friends to come along and plan on a fun evening.

There will be a cost of $3.00 per person and we will have cash prizes given out at the end of the evening. Along with this game we will ask people to bring their favorite finger food (chips, dip etc.) It sounds like a lot of fun especially when someone hollers “BUNCO”.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.” The gentleman replied, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times already!”

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising.

I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors.

I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

In the Kitchen with Susan Belski This will be a new feature in our monthly Gator Tales. Susan has had 6 years of experience as an Executive Chef. She is trained in Classic French, Italian, Cajun/Creole, American, and Vegetarian cuisine (with a little Mexican as well). Susan is currently in school to become a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist. Susan will offer unique, tasty recipes and cooking & nutrition tips. Readers are welcome to send in cooking questions or request for recipe for a specific diet (low salt, diabetic)

“Helping Our Neighbors�

This is a committee not affiliated with any group or club here in the community. There are people who live alone and would not be able to fix meals in an event of illness and that is when this group will try to help.

The committee would help with meals or snacks during a weekly/short period of time and maybe this assistance would help the resident get stronger and back to taking care of themselves a lot faster. The committee would only provide meals, approximately 1-3 days per week and nothing else.

If you would be willing to help cook meals or know of anyone in this situation that needs short time assistance please contact Tammy Anthis 353-1959.

Gator Tales Changes

During the next few months hopefully you will notice some changes in our Gator Tales. I would like to make it more about our park and residents. In order to help with this I am in need of a reporter and photographer.

The job of the reporter will be to write up articles of the various events happening in LHV and to interview new residents. The photographer will take pictures of events in the park, landscape, animals and flowers around our wonderful park.

If you can help in either of these two ways or any other suggestions please let me know.

SPEEDING AND STOP SIGNS Please remind all drivers in your household and your guests to obey the 15 MPH speed limit, and stop at the Stop Signs. We have many residents and resident quests that enjoy walking and bicycling around our neighborhood – but feel unsafe with cars going over the 15 MPH speed limit. The 15 MPH speed limit is meant to protect everyone. Reducing your speed now can prevent having to say “I’m Sorry” later.

Speeding is a community wide problem, let’s all begin standing up to the offenders who are misbehaving; talk to your neighbor if you have a concern on how they or their guests are driving. A friendly reminder to the offender that our speed limit is 15 MPH might be all that is needed. If the offender is one of our many service people; call the company with the truck number or driver name and report them.
