September is a month of metamorphosis. Summer is fading and Autumn is preparing to unfold her glorious colors! This is the perfect time to tackle the neglected things. Perhaps the picket fence or shutters need a fresh coat of paint or the landscaping needs some sprucing up. Perhaps you've been curious about a class or volunteer opportunity but haven't signed up yet. Or maybe it's something as simple as some phone calls to make or letters to write, reconnecting with people you've been thinking about but just haven't taken the time to contact. Small efforts can have enormous effects.

As with other months, various groups have adopted the month for their own. September has been designated as "Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month", "International Strategic Thinking Month", "National Potato Month", "Sea Cadet Month", and "Update Your Resume Month". September also contains "National Waffle Week", and "National Clean Hands Week" (let us hope these folks are keeping their hands clean the rest of the time as well).

Many days are also observed in September, among them, "V-J Day", "Remember Freedom Day", "Jewish New Year", and "Love Note Day".

The birthstone for September is the sapphire which symbolizes heaven. Sapphire comes from the mineral Corundum. Most people think of the color blue when the word sapphire is mentioned, but sapphire comes in many other colors including green, pink, purple, and yellow.

The flower for the month of September is the aster which symbolizes love. It also stands for daintiness and patience. The aster is a well known autumn flower along with its close relative, the chrysanthemum.

Historic Events in September Many major events happened during the ninth month of the year. Here are a few historical events that took place in September.

Continental Congress changed the name of the United Colonies to the United States on September 9, 1776.

President William McKinley was shot on September 6, 1901 while attending the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition in New York. He passed away eight days later on September 14, 1901.

The United States was attacked by terrorists on September 11, 2001. Almost 3,000 people in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington DC died because of the attacks that took place on that day.

Special Days Labor Day is observed as a legal holiday on the first Monday in September throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. In Australia, Labor Day is called Eight Hour Day, and it commemorates the successful struggle for a shorter working day. In Europe, Labor Day is observed on May 1, also known as May Day. The first Labor Day parade in New York City was held in September 1982. Two men are credited with playing an important role not only in bringing about the parade but the holiday as well. Matthew Maguire, a machinist from Paterson, N.J., and Peter J. McGuire, a New York City carpenter who helped found the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, are said to have suggested a holiday to honor working people in the United States.

In 1887, Oregon became the first state to make Labor Day a legal holiday, and in 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a bill making Labor Day a national holiday.

"The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day."

President’s Report Welcome to September. For 38 years this was the start of my “new” year. As teacher and principal, as soon as the Back to School ads started I had to start thinking and preparing for the upcoming year. I was especially fortunate (for the most part) as I had good schools and supportive communities.

Even now, September is the beginning of our “new” year. The lake becomes quiet and we commence our processes to get ready for the end of October and our return to Lake Hammock Village. (We are pleased that the Canadian dollar is holding at or a little above par) The next two months seem to go quickly. Making lists helps but there is always last minute rush to see friends and relatives and organize the maintenance of our property up here.

Lake Hammock Village will welcome September with the pool party with the requisite fun, games, food and prizes. Enjoy the event and don’t forget to thank the organizing team. Our village is only as good as our volunteers. To everyone who takes part in our activities – A Big Thank You. The Board of Directors will meet on Tuesday, September 5th and the General Meeting will occur on September 12th. We are continually looking forward to receiving your ideas and suggestions.

New Residents Welcome to our community!

James (Dutch) & Rebecca (Becky) Zigler Poppink moved into 32 Silver Crest in June from Michigan. Becky is retired from the state of Michigan and Dutch retired from the Navy. They have 3 children and 8 grandchildren. Living with them are their two dogs Cubbie and Catie. They enjoy watching/participating in sports, cooking, gardening and golf.

Douglas Simpson & Pamela Angeline moved into 160 Glen Este Ct in July. Both of them work at Old is New Again. They have 4 children and 6 grandchildren. They enjoy golf, cards and walking.

Bill & Joyce Reesey moved into 175 Glen Este Blvd. in July from Franklin, N.C. He is retired from GE. They have 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. They have one dog named Duchess. They enjoy woodcarving, fishing, photography, and reading.

LAKE HAMMOCKE EVENT Thursday, December 13th – Arabian Nights presents The World’s Greatest Holiday Show on horses. The cost will be $37 pp which includes the Great Hall pre-show entertainment and appetizer buffet, your entrée and dessert, unlimited Pepsi-cola products, tax, tip, and of course the incredible show. For $5 pp extra you can have unlimited beer & wine (can be purchased the night of the show. I have reserved 20 tickets but can add more if needed. Reservations by December 1st. We will carpool and need to arrive at the theater by 4:30 for a 6:00 pm show.

GRAMMAS’ ATTIC Grammas’ Attic is a Lake Hammock Community service that lends medical &/or child equipment for short term. If you have a grandchild coming to visit or have had a surgical procedure or have fractured something, we may have that playpen, highchair, stroller, wheelchair or potty seat that you can borrow. I need to update my list of items available.

NEW ACTIVITIES IN THE CLUBHOUSE LHV WEIGHT LOSS SUPPORT GROUP On Tuesday, September 4th at 9:00 AM we will be starting a weekly weight loss group in the clubhouse.

We will have two pots of money; 1) All attendees put in a quarter and this pot will go to the biggest loser for the week (most pounds loss in a week).

2) All attendees who gain weight put a quarter in the pot for each pound gained that week. This pot will be saved up and given to the biggest weight loss loser for the month (you must have weighed in every week).

CARDS On Tuesday afternoons at 1:00 PM in the clubhouse there have been a few of us gathering to play Hand & Foot. This card game is very similar to Canasta. If you would like to play Hand & Foot or Canasta please join us on Tuesdays at 1:00 PM.

Friday afternoons at 12:30 pm Pokeno is being played in the clubhouse. Pokeno is a combination of poker and bingo, played like bingo. Instead of playing with a standard bingo card everyone uses a Pokeno card, which has card names and suits on it. As card names are called out, players cover the cards with their poker chips until one of them wins the game.

I've sure gotten old!

I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes.

I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts.

Have bouts with dementia.

Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore.

Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92.

Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's license.

In the Kitchen with Susan Belski Chicken Marsala INGREDIENTS 1 ž cups reduced-sodium chicken broth (14 fl. Oz.).

2 tablespoons finely chopped sweet onion (or shallot) 5 tablespoons unsalted butter 10 oz. mushrooms, trimmed and thinly sliced 1 1/2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh basil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1 cup all-purpose flour 4 skinless boneless chicken breast halves (2 lb. total) 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons dry Marsala wine 2/3 cup half and half 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice PREPARATION Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 200°F. Bring broth to a boil in a 2-quart saucepan over high heat, then boil, uncovered, until reduced to about 3/4 cup, about 20 minutes.

Cook onion in 3 tablespoons butter in an 8- to 10-inch heavy skillet over moderate heat, stirring, until onion begins to turn golden, about 1 minute. Add mushrooms, 1 teaspoon basil, salt, and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid from mushrooms is evaporated and mushrooms begin to brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from heat.

Put flour in a wide shallow bowl. Gently pound chicken to 1/4 inch thick between 2 sheets of plastic wrap using the flat side of a meat pounder or a rolling pin.

Pat chicken dry and season with salt and pepper, and then dredge in flour, 1 piece at a time, shaking off excess. Transfer to sheets of wax paper, arranging chicken in 1 layer. *You may use baked / broiled chicken if you want a lighter meal.* Heat 1 tablespoon each of oil and butter in a 10-inch heavy skillet over moderately high heat until foam subsides, then sautĂŠ half of chicken, turning over once, until golden and just cooked through, about 4 minutes total. Transfer cooked chicken to a large heatproof platter, arranging in 1 layer, put platter in oven to keep warm. Wipe out skillet with paper towels and cook remaining chicken in same manner, then transfer to oven, arranging in 1 layer.

Add 1/2 cup wine to skillet and boil over high heat, stirring and scraping up brown bits, about 30 seconds. Add reduced broth, cream, and mushrooms then simmer, stirring occasionally, until sauce is slightly thickened, 6 to 8 minutes. Add lemon juice and remaining 2 tablespoons wine and 1/2 teaspoon basil.

Serve chicken with rice or pasta and top with sauce. ================================================================================= Top Ten Best Food Trivia 1.
