ody. When writing this text, I had to consider my own views on Body Positivity and consider what impact fashion, social media and the entertainment industry had on all of us. As someone who works in fashion, the pressures of a “slim” or “trimmed” physique, would play in the minds of even the strongest individuals. This may apply to Second Life, and the “ideal” figure.

First let’s go back. If this was 26 years ago, 1994 to be exact, and you were asked to describe a fashion model - the description would probably read as; slim, long-legged, evenly-proportioned and most likely, white woman with long hair, full lips, good teeth and long eyelashes.

Am I right? I, being a 90s baby, growing up and reading Vogue magazine, knew the ONLY type of models I would see inside.

To ask and answer that question today requires a broader vocabulary.

The 2016 edition of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit edition had three variant covers, each featuring a woman of a different body size and shape. Hailey Clauson, being the stereotypical idea of what a “swimsuit model” looks like, Ashley Graham and Ronda Rousey both being what is considered in the fashion industry as “plus-size”, also appeared on the cover. Ronda being a MMA superstar, and Ashely walking and appearing on fashions most coveted magazines and walking in some major shows from; H&M, Michael Kors, Prabal Gurung, Christian Siriano and Dolce & Gabbana. Also, appearing on the covers of L’Officiel Turkey, InStyle Russia, The Last Magazine, Allure and Vogue, just to make a few.

She’s paved the way for more girls with a fuller figure to appear on covers of magazines and walk during fashion week. But let’s not celebrate just yet. Mainstream media, as well as, the fashion industry. Is a long way off from celebrating every body type as equally attractive.

The inclusion of Rousey and Graham as cover models is a sign of slow but positive progress. That being said, women such as Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Kim Kardashian and Cardi B, possess figures that (if we were currently in the 90s) would be shunned by the fashion world.

Today, these women are some of fashions biggest style icons. Proving that fashion, as well as the rest of the world. Is coming to terms with fuller, curvier physiques. So, how can a BBL body, be looked at as “unfashionable” or “ugly”? Why can’t an Aesthetic body, have more variety? It is odd to say the least, that some on SecondLife have deemed these bodies as “only used for sex appeal, not for fashion”, when it is these very same celebrities that some of these creators look to for “inspiration”, and have their very same shape...I’ll let that sink in.

elcome to our first issue of 2020! I thank all of our readers for continuously supporting FLAWZ Magazine and the innovative brands, models and photographers who take part and represent their interpretations of fashion and design in a unique way. With this issue, we are celebrating The Body!

This issue is the first of many to come for FLAWZ. It is our first theme-driven issue, a departure from our past publications, and our largest issue yet. At FLAWZ we are adding our own unique flair to this tradition of celebrating the human form. Speaking of celebrating the human form, be sure to read our special interview of Kaitlyn the creator of the BBL Mesh Body. Girl, I do love a snatched waist!

I have to say that I am in constant awe of the talents this magazine showcases with each edition. Artists and designers alike each put extensive time, effort and care into their creations and photographs. You all are the true representation of what Second Life is as a creative community.

It is a pleasure working on this issue with an amazing team. Here’s to the March 2020 issue of FLAWZ Magazine!

his issue of FLAWZ we wanted to try something a little different and incorporate a theme for you, our readers, to be able to take in and possibly even create dialogue about what Body Image means to you all. We as a society have such polarizing views and opinions about beauty standards and what qualifies something as truly captivatingly stunning, or so repulsive it mustn’t even be seen.

We wanted to challenge the idea of what having a drastically altered and by most people’s standards, different body, means to the community of Second Life. Whether or not you change your way of thinking about certain body-types and the preconceived notions that come with that subject matter, we hope you at the very least take away a new perspective of beauty to consider and remember that it, like most things, is subjective in the end.

It is my pleasure to welcome to the 4th issue of FLAWZ Magazine.

If you’re one of the many who’ve been on Second Life in the last few years, you’ve notice a few changes and upgrades to this platform. Among the changes, the most significant improvements come from the selection of bodies, you can choose from. With each selection providing a certain figure or physic, the creators have improved on making these bodies feel and look more realistic with each upgrade. But if you’re like me..you’ve noticed, Second Life is a place that has been able to take what’s going on in real life, and transformed it to fit with Second Life.

So it was only a matter of time before someone created a body that fit the needs of some..that turned out to be most. Kaitlyn set the trend that led the way for many to take her new body, the BBL, and put their own twist on this fantastic body. But this is Second Life after all, and with anything new, there are always some criticisms. Some feel the body is “unrealistic”, “unappealing”. According to Kaitlyn, this isn’t a body for EVERYONE. But the body does provide a new look at what’s fashionable. When you have women like Kim Kardashian, who have proven to the fashion world, that she can wear anything a model a size zero can, it opens the minds of those who were so closed off.

Now some would argue the hip hop and urban community played a huge role in being the first to focus on women’s backsides. You had Sir Mix-a-lots anthem “Baby Got Back”.

Sisqo’s “Thong” song. Wrex-n-Effects “Rumpshakers”, Destiny’s Child “Bootylicious”, Juvenile “Back Dat Ass Up”, The Black-Eyed Peas “My Humps” and of course Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda”. One thing is for certain, in the last couple of years, ass has been EVERYWHERE! Literally. So it was ONLY a matter of time before this physique made its way to Second Life.

I wanted to get Kaitlyn’s view on why she took on this daunting task, of not only creating a WHOLE new body, but having to start over with new clothing, creators who would see the beauty of this figure and want to create for it, and how to get the naysayers to give this figure 8 a chance.

Question: Again it’s always a pleasure seeing you Kaitlyn. Looking absolutely gorgeous.

On this cold New York afternoon. How are you?

Kaitlyn: Aw it’s a pleasure seeing you as well! I’m doing great thank you how are you?

(Respond) I’m doing good. Tired from traveling. But will not and can’t complain.

Question: Okay so, you know everyone wants to know, let’s just get this question over and done with lol. Why create a body like this? I already have an idea of why, but I want to see if it matches what I’m thinking.

Kaitlyn: Well LOL. I originally created the body just to see if I could achieve the Instagram model kind of vibe I have been trying to go for. The thought of that coming this far never crossed my mind in all honesty LOL. (Respond) Thats what I was thinking of as well!

Question: Did there ever come a time when you were creating the BBL, stopped and said, “WTF am I doing?”

Kaitlyn: You know there was! In the beginning when people first started taking notice of the difference in my body and the pressure was turned on to making it public, I sort of doubted it myself. I am aware that I am the first person from our community to do something in this lane so I was very nervous for the public criticism.

(Respond) That must’ve been a challenge as well.

Question: I would of thought, with everything you had to do with creating an entirely new body. It was going to be too much for you to handle. Was there ever a pressure for your body to be perfect?

Kaitlyn: Yes there was actually. Not only for myself but from everyone watching. You know everyone’s opinion of perfect is different. There are people who loved BBL from day one and there are people who also hated it. The main pressure comes from myself though, always wanting to step it up a notch.

(Respond) You know we do that to ourselves a lot. It doesn’t matter how good a product may be, we criticize ourselves so much.

Question: What was the main inspiration, or who was for the BBL? I’m sure you had so many women to choose from.

Kaitlyn: Well where do I begin LOL. Well it’s obvious a big part of my inspiration came from the Kardashians of course. Around the start of the body I was really into re-creating their Photos. Outside of them people like Stephanie Santiago, Bernice Burgos, DreamDoll, Nicki Minaj, Kami Osman, and the list honestly could just go on. Anyone with serious curves you could say.

(Respond) I do remember the re-creating of the Kardashians, those were epic and beautiful!

Question: I remember when you released the body, I kept thinking to myself how proud you must have been to finally have something else to be proud of. How did you feel releasing the BBL body?

Kaitlyn: It was a roller coaster of emotions. You know releasing something that I personally loved and the reaction being so mixed at times was overwhelming. Some days I was on cloud nine and others I almost regretted it, even making it available to the public.

Don’t get me wrong I’m proud of what I’ve done, I just didn’t know it would come with so much baggage at times.

(Respond) I can only imagine.

Question: So many have come out and have supported and have shared their dislikes.

What has been the general feel since you released the BBL? Kaitlyn: By general feel you mean me or the public?

(Respond) The public.

Kaitlyn: Hmm to be honest it’s mainly love. I’ve noticed most of the negative comments and attitudes come from other influences if you catch my drift. People don’t realize they have been comparing my work to the work of people who have been in this for years now. All I ask is the time to catch up.

(Respond) OH I know what you mean. And I get it, which leads into my next question, Question: With the negative comments. Do you find that it’s creators who are being one sided? Not wanting to take the time to design for the shape. Or just them not being open minded?

Kaitlyn: I wouldn’t put the blame on the creators, you know everyone in business has to make choices that best suits them. I do feel the public’s voice is strong and if you’re constantly seeing an up and down in support of a particular body you may be weary about creating for it. My thing is, support for the BBL outside Social media has never stopped.

So if anyone’s not including BBL in their sizing you’re just missing out. I’ve received so many messages from people saying that they want the BBL to be their main body, the only issue they have is a lack of clothing.

Question: I actually thought creators would love to create for the BBL. I mean shit, it’s a brand new body. Did you initially think the same? Or you knew some were going to shy away from it?

Kaitlyn: At first they did love creating for it. It’s a little funny seeing some stores who started creating for BBL now “excluding” it from their sizing. In all honesty I had no real expectations for the BBL body. I’m sure anyone can name other bodies that have been out and still have yet to reach where I’m sure they’d like to be. For me, my biggest hurdle was getting BBL to be supported by OMEGA and when that happened I was over the moon.

(Respond) Oh, I didn’t know people went from supporting you to not supporting you…

Shaking my fucking head that’s so wild.

Question: Now I have to say this lol. But I’m a little disappointed with the lack of creativity I’ve seen when it comes to clothing for the BBL. With the exception of Yentements of course, but how do you feel about what’s being put out for the BBL? Kaitlyn: Well I personally love the thing’s I’m beginning to see from creators. There are more options for BBL coming out every day really. You know stores like Moxy, MERCH, PlushStudios, Bjorn, Jourda of course and I forget the rest off the top of my head. They have all been really coming through for BBL so a special shout out to them!

(Respond) I guess from a fashion standpoint I expected a little more… Fashion LOL. But they have been doing much better.

Question: As a creator of a clothing brand. What did you expect to see being created for the BBL? Are you ready for a creator to be more creative or are you fine with what’s being put out?

Kaitlyn: Hey now LOL one of my favorite sayings is “hoe but make it fashion”. No but I definitely understand what you mean. I do wish people would realize you can put normal Clothing on a big booty! With time I hope more creators see how versatile the body is and show it the love it truly deserves.

(Respond) LOL OK I’m here for it Tyra Banks LOL. I understand what you mean as well.

Question: You’ve done so many upgrades to the body. What do you want to do to it next?

Kaitlyn: Next for the BBL body is the official update. So more layers, a brand new hud, new control options, more customization and anything else I can think of along the way.

(Respond) Woooo! Can not waitttttt!

Question: You’ve collaborate with so many creators. Who would you like to collaborate with next and why?

Kaitlyn: Hmm that’s a great question. I’m open to collaborating with anyone in all honesty. I just love the creative process of brainstorming ideas and seeing it all come into existence. I definitely would like to collaborate with someone who does something I’m not currently doing like hair or something along those lines.

(Respond) I could see you doing hair… That would be dope. And you already tapped into furniture.

Question: i’m always fascinated with what creators do next. Where the future maybe taking them, where do you see the BBL and Yentements headed?

Kaitlyn: My vision for Yentements has always been something along the lines of a bird off Goodman‘s or Bloomingdale’s. A little of everything, or should I say lifestyle in general. I just want to improve my craft and give the people the content they deserve. As far as the BBL I do plan on adding to the family but I can’t say too much on that right now.

(Respond) OOOOOOOOO! Okay for the secrets.

Question: What would you like people to take away from you being bold and trying something I know so many wish they had done?

Answer: If I could have people take something away from everything I put out there it would be just do what you want. Stop caring about the “What if’s” and just go for it because I promise you’re going to do it anyway. I would also just like to say I am a normal person just like anyone else. There isn’t something that makes me better or makes me feel as though I am above anyone. I believe as long as you remain humble and true to yourself, with exception for when you have to let a bitch know LOL! You can accomplish anything.

In celebration of “The Body” for this issue of Flawz Magazine I decided to represent my masculine side. The body I wear is the latest release from The Shops called Legacy. I have always been an admirer of their high mesh quality since their first product iteration known as The Mesh Project. It was one of the first mesh body brands that I was exposed to when I first joined Second Life. I always wanted to represent my “real-life” skin tone and look when it came to my male avatars. For my male avatar creations, I always wanted to have them look athletic but not to the point of being a bodybuilder. I look for a lean swimmer build which I really admire. For this spread I wanted to highlight how tattoos can represent the personality, how they can be incorporated in a spiritual sense and how they can be accentuated with the movement of the body.

He finds that having the option to be in a world where you can be anything that you want, gives you the opportunity to explore ones being and sexuality, being able to be experimental with oneself and with the chance to do things you wouldn't do in real life. That is a freeing feeling. TW takes pride in being a creative, he feels that he should push the boundaries to grab your attention and often out of shock-value.

What Body Image means to me is the freedom and ability to express one’s personality and interests through the art of their body shape, and what one chooses to wear on that body. It is a reflection of who we are inside. I wear the Belleza Jake body in SL and have for a long time, and I chose that body because of how it works so beautifully with a slimmer build of body without going too skinny, leaving still a lot of muscular definition that is very masculine. The shape is one I custom made for myself and I wanted it to be fit for modeling, slim but in an athletic way like a swimmer’s build, and very tall. It’s a visual representation of who I am as a person, someone who loves high fashion and editorial looks and for me this build of body is well suited to those fashion looks.

TRENDZ: Spring/Summer trends Real Life and Second Life 2020

The trend on everyone’s lips wasn’t color, or hemlines, green catwalks, sustainability or the circulation of the economy. These were looked at more then the 2020 shows. With fashion being on of the most polluting industries on the planet, it’s struggling to get with the climate change program.

No one really cares about what’s NEW, everyone wants sustainability. It’s sad to say, but fashion is suddenly out of style when it comes being aware of its polluting habits. It’s time for all brands to be clever and start asking the honest questions: how can we repurpose, up-cycle, and promote mindful purchasing while still delivering amazing and stunningly beautiful collections that keep the novelty that will hold customer’s fleeting attention spans and persuade them to dip into their wallets?

Major labels are listening. Gabriela Hearst put on what she termed the first carbon-neutral fashion show in New York. Gucci announced a goal of net carbon neutrality through a combination of reducing and offsetting all carbon emissions from it’s supply chain. Others used their catwalk sets to signal a new mindful approach. Dior surrounded it’s runway with trees designed for replanting in Paris urban areas. Louis Vuitton kept being minimal, with bleached pine stadium seats sourced from sustainably manage pine forest in the Landes region of France which, it announced, would be repurposed after the show by the organization ArtShock.

For the clothes themselves, it’s good news for classic wardrobe staples: denim, trenchcoat and shirting are all offered in smart combinations for spring. And when it comes to new ideas?

Neon brights are proliferating and short suits are having a moment. Here’s FLAWZ’s edit of the biggest spring/summer 2020 trends.
