2025: The Year in Impact
At Flat Rock Playhouse, we do more than entertain—we energize, educate, and elevate the people of our community. As a professional producing regional theatre, our influence reaches far beyond the stage. Each season, our high-quality productions bring stories to life that spark conversation and connection. Every year, our education programs reach thousands of young people and community members. These programs open doors to creativity, confidence, and possibility. With every performance, workshop, and event, we help drive local tourism, support businesses and give back to the individuals who make our region vibrant.
These outcomes could not be possible without support from patrons like you, and the impact is measured by the numbers. We are reminded that every data point reflects your belief in the power of the arts to transform lives. The totals, percentages, and milestones you’ll see in the pages ahead are more than metrics—they are moments of joy, learning, and community that you helped create.
From our vantage points shaping the artistic vision, managing the organization, and guiding its long-term strategy, we see the same truth: your support fuels everything we do.
It happens in the smile that softens a face as tension falls away. In the laugh that escapes at a perfectly timed joke, offering a moment of pure release. In the student who discovers the confidence to speak in front of a class for the first time. In the realization that you identify with someone you’ve never met—and suddenly, the world looks just a little different.
This is the power, the impact of theatre.
You empower us to dream boldly, operate responsibly, and serve wholeheartedly. Thank you for standing with us, investing in this work, and for believing in the stories behind the statistics. We are deeply grateful to partner with you, and we look forward to all we will continue to build, measure, and celebrate together.
Sincerely,
Lisa K. Bryant - Artistic Director

The Journey of the Season

TFIRST DRAFT OF 2025 SEASON BUDGET

he 2025 season marked an important step forward for Flat Rock Playhouse artistically, operationally, and in the strength of our connection to the community. As the State Theatre of North Carolina, our mission extends beyond producing exceptional theatre; it includes educating young artists, supporting the local economy, and serving as a cultural anchor for our region.

Across our stages, classrooms, and the broader community, audiences returned with enthusiasm, students engaged in hands-on learning, and artists and staff delivered work that reflected both professional artistry and care.
The productions of 2025 showcased what makes Flat Rock Playhouse unique: professional productions, bold storytelling, and a commitment to nurturing talent at every stage of development. From the soulful music of Beautiful, to the large-scale technical feats of The PlayThatGoesWrong, to the intimate character-driven world of TheMurderontheOrientExpress, each show reflected the collaborative spirit that has shaped this institution since 1952.

The pages ahead walk you through how a season truly comes to life at a professional producing theatre: how our productions are built from the ground up, how our programs reach across the region, and how your support fuels both artistic excellence and financial stability. These elements reveal the full picture of Flat Rock Playhouse — a place where every set, costume, cue, and story is created right here on the Rock, shaped with purpose, resilience, and community at its heart.

Murder on the Orient Express highlighted the unique power of our slip stage, using a series of precisely timed transitions to evoke the rhythm and momentum of a moving train. Every shift was run by our production staff, whose behind-the-scenes precision ensured the story unfolded with fluidity and dramatic impact.
The Play That Goes Wrong required a remarkable degree of technical artistry. It presented challenges like engineered platform and wall drops, rigorous daily safety checks, and more than 170 individual gags, each one timed to the millisecond. These effects only succeeded because our professional crew invests hours of preparation, calibration, and coordination to make the onstage “disaster” unfold with flawless precision. JUNE (cont.)

OUR VOLUNTEERS POWER CONNECTION, CARE, & COMMUNITY
At Flat Rock Playhouse, volunteers are woven into the daily life of the theatre, from our dedicated ushers to the generous “Feed Me” crews who nourish our artists and staff. The Transportation Committee welcomes visiting performers with seamless rides and warm hospitality, while our Master Gardeners keep the grounds vibrant and inviting for all who arrive. Parking Volunteers create smooth, friendly arrivals on performance days, setting the tone for an enjoyable experience. And in our Christmas show, our volunteer chorus and dancers bring the community onto the stage itself, adding a special hometown spirit to the production. Together, these teams save our staff countless hours, strengthen community connection, and help create the magic that defines the Playhouse.

The “Feed Me” program is another example of how volunteers make a meaningful difference. These meals offer comfort during long days and help artists feel supported by the community around them.
“ Flat Rock Playhouse is a treasure to our community, and being a part of it has been a high point of my life while living in Flat Rock. “Playhouse Jr. has been a lifeline for my daughter, Pippa.
As an autistic teen, she spends much of her life masking and pushing through, but in the theatre she softens. She moves freely, expresses herself without fear, and reconnects with joy. It’s one of the only places where she isn’t just coping, but dreaming. The care she receives helps her feel seen and capable. As a single mother, the Scholarship Fund made this possible when I couldn’t have said yes on my own. This support isn’t just financial— it’s hope, relief, and a doorway to her thriving.” — Robyn Paulete
Stories like Pippa’s reflect the heart of our education work. Through year-round classes, free touring productions in schools, free hands-on workshops, and free community performances—from the 'Rootabaga Stories' at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site to our 'Rock Out' Concerts across the county—we ensure that every young person has access to the arts. No matter their background, ability, or financial circumstance, they have a place to belong, imagine, and shine. After Hurricane Helene, scholarship needs and support surged—proof of how deeply our community values giving students the chance to heal, grow, and find hope through the arts.

he Apprentice Program has long been central to our mission, giving emerging artists a professional launchpad while infusing each season with fresh energy. In 2025, six Apprentices trained alongside seasoned theatre makers, performed in touring productions across five counties, and introduced thousands of young people to live theatre. Through this work they gained real-world resume building experience, including, advancing our new works program by bringing characters to life for the first time. This blend of rigorous training and meaningful community impact is what makes the Apprentice Program a powerful bridge between education and a professional career.

The Apprentices debuted the world-premiere staged reading of Rumpelstiltskin:AFolkMusical, the newest addition to our Playhouse Jr. Licensing catalog.

HOURS OF
IMPACT & FUNDING

Dear Friends,
Stepping into Flat Rock Playhouse in January 2026 has been an honor, and in these first months I’ve seen just how deeply this theatre is woven into the life of our community. As I reviewed the 2025 season, it was clear that your support fueled a year of meaningful impact—audiences returned in strong numbers, students across the region engaged in transformative arts education, and volunteers helped create the welcoming environment our patrons cherish.
These impact numbers share the story behind those successes, highlighting the reach of our programs, the strength of our audience engagement, and the financial progress that positions us for a vibrant future. Most importantly, it reflects the people—patrons, artists, students, and supporters like you—who make this work possible.
Thank you for your continued belief in the Flat Rock Playhouse. Together, we are building a foundation that ensures Flat Rock Playhouse remains a place of creativity, connection, and community for years to come.
With gratitude, Tara Campuzano Director of Development Flat Rock Playhouse

Professional artisans and artists
— more than 175 in 2025 — were supported by FRP as part of our commitment to sustaining a vibrant creative workforce. As a producing theatre, we provide a unique space for professionals to refine their craft, expand their artistry, and bring extraordinary productions to life.

With the majority of our audiences traveling more than 50 miles to experience Flat Rock Playhouse, our reach extends far beyond our immediate neighborhood. Each visit brings new energy and investment into Henderson County and our region, strengthening our cultural footprint and fueling the local economy, all while supporting the arts education programs that directly benefit children and families in our own community.

Workshops led by our full-time and part-time teaching artists reached nine schools, building cooperation and essential soft skills. Alongside our 20 free in-school tours, these programs often provide a student’s first exposure to the arts and create a lasting impact.
Reading in schools remained a core priority in 2025 as our staff continued the 'Rock Out' in the Schools program, bringing energetic read-alouds and arts-based storytelling directly into classrooms. Our team visited 30 schools, strengthening early literacy and inspiring young readers across our community.
