Welcome to Flat Rock Playhouse and to Footloose. I’m glad you’re here. I first arrived on the Rock in 2012 as a wide-eyed apprentice. I performed onstage, painted sets, sewed on suspender buttons, and had the summer of my life. I had no idea how deeply this place would shape me, or that I’d one day call it my artistic home.
Over the past fourteen years, I’ve had the privilege of serving this theater as a performer, musician, Apprentice Director, Resident Music Director, and now as Flat Rock Playhouse’s Artistic Associate. Along the way, I’ve written four new musicals for the Playhouse and helped build our new works initiative. This artistic haven in the Appalachians has given me so much, and I’m commit‑ ted to bringing the highest‑quality entertainment to this extraordinary community.
What a joy it is to bring Footloose to this stage. Whether you know it from the movie, the chart-topping soundtrack, or that one wedding reception line dance you can never escape, Footloose is a story that lives in your bones. At its heart, it’s about a community finding its way back to itself — through music, through joy, and especially through dance. That’s exactly what I hope today brings you.

NICOLE POWELL* (VI MOORE) a Howard University graduate, has cultivated a distinguished career, performing on Broadway, Off-Broadway, National Tours, and at regional theaters nationwide. She was most recently seen in ABOUT TIME, a new Off-Broadway musical revue by Richard Maltby and David Shire. She also won the 2025 AUDELCO Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Missy Judson in American Theater Group’s production of PURLIE! LUCY WERNER* (RUSTY) is a singer, songwriter, actress, dancer, yogi, sewist, crafter, camping enthusiast, entrepreneur and artist living in Brooklyn, NY! Lucy can most often be found traveling around NYC in her vintage Chevy Astrovan, AKA her Rock-Fairy-Goddess Mobile. She has traveled the country and the world performing principle roles in two First National Tours as well as headlining her solo and duo acts on cruise ships. She recently premiered her new solo show PLAYING DRESS UP in Columbus, Georgia and most recently in NYC! MADDIE FRANKE* (LULU WARNICKER / ENSEMBLE / DANCE CAPTAIN) Maddie started as an apprentice at FRP in 2008, and they just can’t seem to get rid of her. Her most recent credits here on the rock include BEAUTIFUL, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, BOEING BOEING, CABARET, and JERSEY BOYS. In addition to performing she also a choreographer and is on the marketing team here at the Playhouse. BRIANNA HASTON (ENSEMBLE) is a Hendersonville native and an alumni of Oklahoma City University with a BFA in Dance Performance. She has performed in several Main stage productions at the Flat Rock Playhouse including CATS (Victoria), CABARET (Fritzie), CINDERELLA, A CHORUS LINE, WEST SIDE STORY and you may have seen her a few times in A FLAT ROCK CHRISTMAS. She is currently also a traveling magician assistant with ROB LAKE MAGIC and a model with ELEVATE PERFORMS. Brianna is extremely grateful for the love and support from her Flat Rock family!

LINDSAY ANDREWS (IRENE / ENSEMBLE / APPRENTICE) is so excited to be back at the rock for her second year as an apprentice! She is a NYC-based singer and actor, originally from Buffalo, NY. Last year, Lindsay was seen performing in LETTERLAND ALIVE! and GREETINGS FROM NORTH CAROLINA around elementary schools in the Carolinas, as well as performing in the world premiere workshop of RUMPELSTILTSKIN. Additionally, some of her favorite regional credits include TICK… TICK…BOOM! (Susan and Others), ALL SHOOK UP (Miss Sandra), and THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY (Marian) at the Hackmatack Playhouse. Besides theater, Lindsay is also an active jazz and cabaret singer around the boroughs of NYC and has done stand-up comedy at the historic Gotham Comedy Club through the Manhattan Comedy School. ISAIAH BYRD (JETER / ENSEMBLE / APPRENTICE) is so excited to be an apprentice this year at Flat Rock Playhouse! Isaiah is a performer from NYC, originally from Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from The Institute For American Musical Theatre (IAMT) in New York. Some of his favorite credits include Richie in A CHORUS LINE (IAMT), HOUSE CHOIR SINGER (Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade), ZIGGY IN YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, Henry / Dance Captain in NEWSIES (Forestburgh Playhouse), and Miss Andrew in MARY POPPINS (Lakeside Theatre Co). Outside of performing, Isaiah enjoys resting at home, watching true crime, writing, watching funny videos, hanging with friends, and spending time outdoors (especially with animals!). SEAN CROTHERS (BICKLE / ENSEMBLE / APPRENTICE) is excited to be back for his Second year as a Flat Rock Apprentice. Originally from Boone NC, Sean studied at Eckerd College and Circle in the Square Theatre School to gain a BFA in musical theatre. He has been working in NYC ever since and joined the Alumni Theatre company of Circle in the Square: Dot in the Box. He’s since made his off Broadway Debut at the Players Theatre in the anthology play MR. TOFFEY TUCK. Some of Sean’s Favorite Roles he’s played include Melchior: SPRING AWAKENING, Nick Bottom: SOMETHING ROTTEN, and his unforgettable time as Red Robot: LETTERLAND ALIVE, Which he Performed with the Playhouse last summer. Sean has a special love for New work and Shakespeare and is of the mind set that he is always a student at heart and there’s always more to learn.
MISCHEL JOHNSON (ENSEMBLE / APPRENTICE) is a multifaceted performer and graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design. She is absolutely thrilled to return to Flat Rock Playhouse as a second year Apprentice! Mischel was most recently seen as Crystal in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS at the Historic Savannah Theatre. Previous credits include HAIRSPRAY (Dynamite), AMERICAN IDIOT (Extraordinary Girl), & BEAUTIFUL (Janelle/Shirelle).
ANYA KATHERINE JONES (ENSEMBLE / APPRENTICE) is so excited to be a part of Flat Rock’s apprenticeship program! She is a recent graduate of Elon University’s BFA Music Theatre program and a North Carolina local. ANGELINA MANCUSO (GARVIN / ENSEMBLE / APPRENTICE) is from Bucks County, Pennsylvania and just graduated from Elon University with a double major in Music Theater and Journalism. She is so excited and grateful that she gets to spend her summer and fall as an apprentice at Flat Rock Playhouse! Gabe Tobierre is excited to be with Flat Rock Playhouse this season! He is a recent graduate from Elon University’s BFA Music Theatre Program (Go Phoenix!) originally hailing from Auburn, IN. His most recent credits include RENT as Benjamin Coffin III and AN AMERICAN IN PARIS as Jerry Mulligan, both at Elon University! Why We Give Nancy and Alan Sawyer
For Nancy and Alan Sawyer, supporting Flat Rock Playhouse is rooted in something simple but powerful. It is about a palpable sense of community.
“The Playhouse has become part of my community, and that’s a major reason why we support it,” Nancy says. “It’s something you share with friends and people you’ve come to know through the theatre.”
Since attending their first performance in 2021, the Sawyers have come to see the Playhouse as more than a place to enjoy a show. “It’s magic to arrive at a show and see so many people you know in the courtyard,” Alan says. “There’s an aura here - with the trees and the barn theatre - it just feels special.”
Their support is also driven by a deep respect for the quality of the work on stage as well as behind the scenes. Having attended major metropolitan theatres for many years, Alan notes, “It’s extraordinary what’s happening here. When you see the full production, what the staff and crew accomplish - it’s eye-opening. I don’t think people always realize how much goes into what they’re seeing.”
Just as important is the Playhouse’s broader mission. “Flat Rock Playhouse is a vital cultural presence,” Alan adds. “Its commitment to arts education by introducing young people to theatre and creating opportunities for them, is incredibly important. And the fact that so many return after training here speaks volumes.”
For the Sawyers, giving back ensures that this unique blend of artistry, education, and connection at Flat Rock Playhouse continues to thrive - on stage and throughout the community.

THE PLACE THAT SHAPES US: GROWING THROUGH
THEATRE EDUCATION
When I was a shy, quiet eight year-old, I took my first class at Playhouse Jr., (then Theater for Young People). I was reluctant to go, but by the end of class, I was hooked. From then on, the Playhouse became my second home - a place that nurtured my growth and helped me find self-confidence. I learned all the theatrical skills one would expect (and still firmly believe that FRP offers the best theatre education in the region), but what I also learned were invaluable life skills: teamwork, time management, creative thinking, responsibility, resilience, and belief in myself.
Today, Playhouse Jr. offers 27 classes and camps (and growing) annually in acting, mu‑ sical theatre and technical theatre – an incredible offering for the youth in our community. But what you don’t see on the website or class descriptions is what else it offers: a safe, encouraging space for youth to discover and express who they are while learning how to interact with, and be a part of, the world around them. These experiences not only prepare them for a future in theatre, should that be the route they choose, but also equip them with the valuable skills needed to thrive as individuals, no matter their path.
As a mom of 3 young girls who have begun to dabble in Playhouse Jr., I could not be more excited. Though their experiences will surely differ from mine, the growth they’ll find – and the way it helps to shape them – will be just as meaningful. And the best part so far? I can already see it happening.
