Construction Group, Our construction season has started, and summer is here. Each one of our areas is in full swing now. The weatherman has been just OK so far, but we have had some rain that is impacting our schedules somewhat. Be patient as the rains will stop soon.

We are very blessed to have plentiful work, and we see a big year coming!

In terms of safety, we are off to a good start. Remember to use spotters and look out for yourself as well as for your teammates. Be sure each jobsite has designated parking areas and park our vehicles away from the action.

You are important to us, and we care about your well- being… so be sure each one of us is being very sharp and remains focused on safety.

Our consolidation effort is going very well. We are making amazing progress as each one of our areas and divisions gets set up on the same electronic systems and unifying processes and practices. As each month passes, I can see where we are working more and more as one united company and how we will be able to see the benefits down the road. For example, a tremendous effort has been made in our equipment division as far as reporting our equipment numbers and hours into the system.

We are designing a first-class data system that will help us make better decisions on equipment leasing, buying, selling etc. You all are helping to drive that system. Very good work by all.

I am also seeing improved communication happening through various meetings and initiatives. Communication has always been one of the top elements that everyone needs and wants more of. Throughout our company today, we have several areas and divisions that support each other. It takes a very proactive approach to ensure our people have all the information to do their job.

I do look forward to seeing many of you in the field this summer. Stay safe at home and at work. Enjoy the great outdoors with your family as often as you can. Let’s have a great 2021 construction season!

100,000 Hour Safety Milestone In 2020, Chad Ryle reached this significant milestone.

Supervising 100,000 injury free labor hours is a remarkable achievement. This number means Zero Recordables spanning 12 years running or more than 4,500 calendar days. Chad has achieved this with a mindset where preparation to perform work safely is a foundational value and his intentional focus on development of his employees is second to none. Chad continues to set the bar for all of us and this recognition is well deserved. Keep up the great work!

Jogging for Jefferson is a big deal in the Turpin household.

This fundraiser is a jogging event which benefits Jefferson Elementary School. 6-year-old LT, son of Amy Turpin, is autistic, and running is one of the main group activities that he enjoys. Needless to say, this event is special for the family.

The Jefferson Elementary PTO runs several events throughout the year to help provide updated playground equipment and water bottles for the all of the students to use in school. Running for LT is a bonus.

This year, the class was given only THREE business days to collect the money – and the South Bend team came together to help LT collect the largest donation for the Jogging for Jefferson event. Look at that smile! Our people are what matters most, and we demonstrated that by supporting one of our own. Afterwards, Amy Turpin, Project Accountant, sent a touching email to the South Bend Office.

“I just wanted to say thank you to everyone.

My son was able to donate $1,075 to his school and he was the #1 donator for the entire school.

Yesterday, he got to ride in a fire truck and participate in the run for all of the grades.

He ran his happy little heart out. He also gets to be Principal for the Day next week and gets a summer prize box, and his class gets an ice cream party today. It was an absolutely wonderful day, and it wouldn’t have happened without you guys. Again, thank you so, so, so much!”

A big shout out to all of the South Bend team members that helped LT have a great day.

On April 28th, a group of volunteers from the South Bend office participated in the packing of over 700 meals.

This was done at an organization called Cultivate. The mission of Cultivate is to take left over food from events like Notre Dame football games or catered events. This effort was hindered by the pandemic. So instead of giving up on their mission, Cultivate adapted to take unprepared food from restaurants and cooked it then packaged it. The food that is packaged is frozen and then it is given out at area schools for the food insecure children to have over the weekend. I would like to thank the team members that participated in the event. From left to right Amy Turpin, Derek Allen, Lynn Bauer, Alisha Young, Todd Fawver and Jared Heiser. MCNI would like to congratulate Derek Allen on his appearance on Jeopardy on June 7, 2021. It is an amazing feat to be on the show. The process to get on the show is quite difficult. Each year approximately 100,000 people take Jeopardy’s online test. From the online test, only about 2500 people get a regional audition. If you get through the audition you are one of the 400 to 500 annual contestants – those are some odds! That day, the South Bend office hosted Derek and his family at the local American Legion for a viewing party. Congratulations, Derek!

Asphalt Resurface, Concrete Ramp Replacement & Bridge Deck Overlays on SR1 & SR44

This project located in Fayette and Wayne County is worth approximately $9.6 million. Milestone will be replacing 170 concrete ramps, partial and full depth asphalt patching, overlaying two bridge decks and installing scour protection. There is a total of approximately 32,000 tons of asphalt on the entire project with an early November completion date.

This project located in Wayne County is approximately $6 million. Milestone is removing 25,500 sy of full depth concrete pavement and replacing with full depth asphalt pavement, extending US40 eastbound to I-70 westbound and SR227 northbound to I-70 westbound auxiliary lanes with some structure and pipe work. A 280‘ pipe will be lined with a CIPP liner and another 195’ of trenchless pipe will be installed, both crossing under I-70. There is a total of approximately 23,000 tons of asphalt on the entire project with a late October completion date.

This project located in Wayne County is approximately $2 million. There are a handful of concrete ramps that get replaced, partial and full depth asphalt patching and two small structure replacements on SR121 and US35.

The asphalt resurfacing on SR121 runs by our very own Plant 35! There is a total of approximately 7,000 tons of asphalt on the entire project with a midSeptember completion date.

This project located in Wayne County is approximately $6 million. Milestone US40 Project 214004 Dig out Crew for curb and ramps in Dublin. will be replacing concrete ramps, full depth asphalt patching, inter-urban rail removal, and asphalt overlay. There is a total of approximately 23,700 tons of asphalt on the entire project with a late October completion date.

RS-40597-A is a resurface project in Henry and Wayne Counties on US40.

It is a little over $7 million project that includes interurban railroad track removal thru the town of Dublin, Curbs in East Germantown: replacing many concrete curb ramps, and over 42,000 tons of new asphalt.

Milestone also was awarded a project of very similar nature that connects to this project and runs to the west all the way into Richmond with interurban track removal in Centerville. Between the two jobs we will be paving the majority of US40 between Richmond and Spiceland.

Retirements A L L A N F R A N S O N has retired from the Operators Union Local 150. He has been a member of the Operators Union for 28 years. He worked for MCNI for the past five years in the South Bend area. Not only was he an excellent operator, but he also was a great teacher for the apprentices he imparted his knowledge upon. We wish Allan a restful and enjoyable retirement. Your skills will be missed.

About as long as he’s been with Milestone, so has he been married. A big congratulations to B U C K A N D N E A R I T Z on their 50th Wedding Anniversary! Buck and Nea were married on May 22, 1971 at First United Methodist Church in Columbus. The reception was then held at the home of Nea’s parents. Mrs. Ritz is now retired, but Buck still keeps us on our toes in Business Development!

They plan to celebrate their anniversary this summer in Hawaii with their children and grandchildren. What a beautiful accomplishment to celebrate. From your Milestone family to you, congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Ritz!

The Milestone Orioles The Milestone Orioles are a 6 and under team based in the city of Ellettsville.

Pictured is Will Rood who is coached by his dad, Rob Rood, an Area Asphalt Manager for Milestones’ Bloomington Office. Milestone supported the Orioles by donating $500 to help the boys get the gear they would need for the season.

Rob says, “Milestone being able to get involved in the community we work in is really special; it shows citizens what kind of company we are and is a great way to build connections.” Will and his team went undefeated this season.

Forest Preserve Volunteers from our Columbus office got involved in multiple ways for the United Way of Bartholomew County. On Thursday, May 20th, Jon Nolting, Forrest Plumlee, Morgan Jones, John Megel and Kevin Ely spent the afternoon clearing a ditch at the Columbus Youth Camp. The next day, May 21st, volunteers from General Superintendent, Dave Nobbe’s team prepared a lot in Columbus for Thrive Alliance build an energy efficient house.

(See newspaper article from The Republic) On Friday, May 21st, another group from Columbus tackled a different project in town. Karen Kelley, Sharon Morrow, Autumn Lee, Kayla Truesdell, Casey Loweth and Lori Boas spent the afternoon placing soil in the raised beds, mulching and repairing the garden bench at the Foundation for Youth Gardens.

Local Men’s Shelter Champaign Asphalt continued to support CU at home – Champaign-Urbana’s local men’s shelter. CU at Home’s Executive Director, Rob Dalhaus, recognized us with a certificate of appreciation for helping them complete their fundraising goal.

Abby & Libby Memorial Park

Milestone North sent a concrete crew to the Abby & Libby Memorial Park again on April 23rd to form and pour concrete aprons around their two concession buildings. Lafayette has been staying in touch with Libby’s grandfather, Mike Patty, and offering help as often as possible. It worked out that we could spare Chris Shepard’s crew for the day to get 50 cyds placed and finished for Mike.

IMI has been another gracious contributor to the park during its development, having donated several loads of concrete in the past and today providing it at a discounted rate. While this concrete project was being coordinated, Rick Yates found out that the park was going to have to pay for the concrete materials and generously offered to pay for it himself. Now that’s a man with a huge heart!

Thank you Rick. You are a shining example of all the great, caring, and giving people we have in our Milestone Family.

The park is getting very close to completion and expects to start holding baseball/softball games and other events by the end of May and throughout the summer. Congratulations to the families, their friends, and the community for their hard work and the realization of this dream!

All in all, it is very difficult to put into words how humbling the amount of support and help Milestone and IMI have provided in building the memorial park for Abby and Libby. This has been a campaign driven and supported from the community along with the outstanding companies stepping up to the plate, far exceeding what I could have ever envisioned. I was able to meet Zach Funk during the pour. He wanted to see the park and provided a level of assurance that IMI was there and was another contributing factor on the support to make this project a success. When Doug informed me that Rick was personally stepping up to cover the cost of the concrete for the two main restroom and concession buildings, it was another moment that made us realize how many great people are willing to support this effort. It was an honor to meet him there during the pour.

I also would like to recognize Josh Coles with Milestone who has been willing to make several trips to the park helping out with various projects.

And to Doug, his willingness to help us coordinate and provide guidance when hurdles come before us.

He even gave up a few weekends in Nov. and Dec. making trips to the park to help us build the picnic shelters. Those were some cold days, and he was a huge help in getting those constructed.

Again, thanks to everyone who has helped make this park come to life.”

Ron Hoyne aqua-bike competition C O M M U N I T Y I N V O LV E M E N T

Champaign Asphalt’s CFO, Ron Hoyne, recently competed in the U.S National Aqua-Bike competition in Sebring, Florida. As one of the top finishers in his age group (65-69), Ron qualifies for the World Championships for 2022. More importantly, Ron has been a key

ingredient to the success of Champaign Asphalt. Since the late 1980’s, Ron’s accounting acumen and thoughtful planning has allowed for tremendous growth and success for all the divisions of Champaign Asphalt. In addition, Ron has been responsible for the expanded wellness program for all our year-round employees. Ron lives in Champaign with his wife Pam. They have 3 grown children and 2 grandkids who reside outside Milwaukee.

On May 12th, Morgan Jones, Autumn Lee, Lori Boas, Karen Kelley, Sharon Morrow, Jon Nolting and Corey Baugh distributed food at the Love Chapel Mobile Food Pantry at Candlelight Mobile Home Park.

The Cement City Stingers are a travel baseball team based out of Mitchell, Indiana. This is their inauguration season. The boys have worked hard since March practicing and preparing for several tournaments throughout the summer.

The team’s philosophy is: Winning is not everything, learning is. We will win with respect and integrity, we will lose with respect and integrity. Our baseball team will be a brotherhood based on friendships, hard work, determination, life lessons, and family. We will continue to work hard, be smart, and pay it forward as we move along our journey of learning the sport of baseball. Have fun and learn, always try hard and do your best!! The Jennings County Panther Baseball team won the The Slumpbuster tournament on May 14th at Lincoln Park in Columbus. The team is associated with Indiana USSSA Baseball.

There were 18 teams in their division.

Coaches are Doug Hudson, Clint McCullough and Matt McNew. Team players are Braxton Parker, Austin Hodge, Justin Terrill, Chancie Volz, Carter Hudson, Bret Sanders, Colten McCullough, Alex Brooks, Noah Morgan, Trevor Castner, Stephen Hall, and Mason McNew. The team was presented a trophy and each player received a championship ring. Milestone was one of the sponsors.

WITH THE 20/20/20 RULE

“Complacency can happen on a day to day basis, for example you have made the same turn or swing 101 times during the shift. As your making the same movements the environment is constantly changing around you. Every 20 minutes take 20 seconds to observe your work area for 20 feet. This will also help you watch out for your coworkers safety which is just as important as your own.”

20 / 20 /20 Every 20 minutes...

While you are on a job site it can help you achieve your safety objectives when you set up regular time intervals to review/scan your surroundings.

Set a discrete alarm/timer on your watch or phone for every 20 minutes if that helps you remember.

Take 20 seconds...

Take 20 seconds to just be aware of your surroundings with safety in mind. This doesn’t have to be exactly 20 seconds, and you don’t want to get too elaborate with alarms on your phone or watch, but approximately 20 seconds is all you need for this rule.

Look 20 feet around you...

Scan about 20 feet around you to see if there are any safety hazards that need to be addressed. If you see something that needs attention make sure it is addressed by yourself, your supervisor, or another crew member.

“What safety means to me is when one takes away hazards before starting any project. Just the other day, I walked into a house being remodeled.

I noticed two boards that had nails in it faced up. After seeing this I immediately disposed the boards. I could have walked around the boards, but I decided to take away that hazard right then before others step on a nail.

Safety must come first, and one must take immediate steps before we do anything else if there is a hazard. If each one of us would do this, our jobsites, our homes, and our churches would all be much safer places for all of us.”

BRICKYARD CROSSING

Milestone received the contract to rehabilitate the Brickyard Crossing golf cart paths, parking lots, and other miscellaneous areas adjacent to the facility. Work included asphalt paving using AMI liquid, concrete curbs and concrete walks. They began in late 2020 and were substantially complete by the May 1st opening date.

EMULSICOAT & CHAMPAIGN ASPHALT PROJECT PARTNERSHIP Emulsicoat has contracted Champaign Asphalt to complete site grading work, underground civil sewer work, pavement, and landscaping at its Saline Ct location in Urbana, IL. The prep work will ready the site for improvements that include erecting two (2) – 1.5MM gallon asphalt storage tanks and three (3) – 300K gallon polymer modified asphalt (PMA) tanks.
