Adna 66, RHS 47
Adna pummeled Raymond 66-47 in the District 4 tournament Feb. 4 at Montesano HS. Hutson paced RHS with 13 points. Adna juniors Braeden Salme (11 rebs) and Eli Smith tallied 17 apiece to lead all scorers.
“We started a little slow against Adna, and it cost us,” Tully said. “We struggled early with turnovers, and we weren’t able to get into any kind of rhythm on offense in the first half. We were able to turn things around in the second half, but we had dug too big of a hole for ourselves in the first half. You can’t play poorly for a half in district and expect to win. Hopefully, we can turn things around and be ready to play well on Friday.”
Five teams from the Pacific League and seven from the Central League qualified to district play.
Gulls 81, SBHS 46 Raymond swamped South Bend 81-46 to close out the Pacific League season Feb. 2 at Seagull gym. Paced by 16 points from Daniel Medeiros, four players scored in double figures for the Seagulls.
“We played one of our best allaround games of the year against South Bend,” Tully said. “Every player who suited up scored. We really played well on offense and defense. Our defensive pressure got to South Bend and enabled us to get a lot of points in transition.”
Also for RHS, Talen Yearout netted 12 points, followed by Kai Heuy (11) and Hutson (10). Quintana led the Gulls in assists with 6 and Yearout pulled down 6 rebounds.
Swogger, Portmann win at regional

Five members of the Willapa Harbor Tri-District wrestling team earned the right to compete at this weekend’s 1B/2B State Mat Classic XXXIV, including champions
Tyson Portmann and Lucas “Spud” Swogger, both of Willapa Valley HS.
According to Willapa Harbor Head Wrestling Coach Preston Crow, Portmann (Jr, 145 pounds) controlled his finals match early after a takedown and a quick escape. Portmann turned a close match (5-4) into a 13-5 landslide victory.
“Tyson’s conditioning was put to the test,” Willapa Harbor Assistant Coach Stephen Smith told the Herald “You can tell he has out worked his opponents in the gas tank department.”
“Lucas (Fr, 138) has been focusing on becoming a complete wrestler,” Crow said. “He is always ‘doing Something’ to put him ahead.”
Strozyk, a sophomore at WVHS, finished third at 182, and Carson Borden, a senior at WVHS, placed fourth at 145 pounds.
In the girls’ regional at Shelton, Nina Siribun (235), a ninth grader at Raymond, claimed third place in a division including 2A/1A/1B/2B competitors. “Nina started her day off with a pin against a tough Mark Morris girl,” Coach Crow said. “She lost her next match to a tough opponent before having a nail biter against long-time rival Bethany Martin of Ilwaco. Down by nine points, Nina never gave up and pulled off a reversal and pinned Martin.”
The Willapa Harbor team will also be sending two alternates, Conner Reyes (152) and Oscar Juarez (182) to the tournament taking place Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. “We are hoping they can get in and wrestle,” Crow said.
