Business Continuity Plans (BCPs) are sets of processes and procedures designed to restore critical business functions in the event of an emergency or disaster. A recent study found that over half of companies experienced a downtime event lasting more than eight hours in the past five years. BCPs differ from Disaster Recovery Plans, which are specific to the recovery of technology systems following a disaster. In order to be effective, BCPs must identify and outline measures for all risks that could potentially affect an organization's operations. Facilities maintenance plays a crucial role in business continuity and should be included in the BCP development process due to their expertise in building engineering, health and safety systems, security and monitoring, and compliance.
