If the "two-building solution" passes, all evidence of separate but equal will be erased from the 150 year old West Broad School campus. Before that happens here are:
ABOUT WEST BROAD SEVEN QUESTIONS
Last week, Historic Athens filed an open records request with CCSD. The results were disturbing. After reviewing the redacted archive and last week's presentation, we believe there are seven critical questions. YEARS, 0 5 1 R E T AF THE WAY S I H T S I OUR WE ERASE HISTORY?
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
When CCSD's preservation planner started asking questions, why did the SPLOST director suggest she should "stay in her lane"? (see page 2) In May, when CCSD's preservation planner submitted a professional recommendation stating Campbell Lane should be rehabilitated due to good condition & cultural importance, why was it never sent to the BOE or Superintendent? (see page 3 & 4) After that professional staff recommendation was suppressed, why was it immediately politicized, referred to by the architect in a message to the SPLOST director as part of the Historic Athens "arsenal"? (see page 3)
Why was an additional report from the preservation planner suppressed from the board that argued for an independent evaluation of new construction costs and that preservation was possible and could even potentially save CCSD money? (see page 5) Why was it necessary for an area nonprofit to be charged $400 in open records fees for information that should have been public and available to the board?
These are just a few of the damaging findings of our redacted open records request. What other damaging information was redacted and suppressed? Given the documented misleading, missing, and supressed information, does the board feel like it has the adequate and accurate information needed to vote to demolish Campbell Lane?
