A Better Deal?

STATE REP PROPOSES POPULIST PLATFORM AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

By Blake Aued news@flagpole.com Franklin D. Roosevelt had the New Deal, Harry Truman had the Fair Deal, and now Spencer Frye is pushing the Better Deal.

The state representative from Athens recently released a populist, progressive blueprint for Democrats to win elections.

And he plans to distribute it to his fellow party members all over the country.

He put it together with the campaign team that he’s worked with since his 2010 campaign for mayor and 2012 election to the Georgia House of Representatives. “We just put down in writing everything we’ve been talking about for 14 years,” Frye told Flagpole. “We have a lot of things we need to fix that we’ve let slip.”

Frye said the broad goal is to shift from a “vulture culture”—where the government exists to help corporations make money, workers are forced onto welfare because wages are so low, and insurance companies fight claims tooth and nail—to one where the government serves the people. The aim is to return to the post-​World War II period of prosperity when holding a full-​time job meant a person could afford decent housing and a middle-​class lifestyle—except this time for everyone, not just the white Americans who benefited from FDR and Truman’s policies.

The development includes 536 units with 1,656 bedrooms, ranging from studios to five-​bedrooms, as well as amenities like fitness and wellness areas, study lounges, group study rooms and a resort-​style rooftop pool.

In exchange for the ability to build on two parking lots near Lay Park previously owned by Athens-​Clarke County, Core Spaces also agreed to contribute almost $8 million to the county’s affordable housing trust fund, pay for a sewer line that will also facilitate more affordable housing construction at Bethel Midtown Village, build

In the coming weeks, he plans to chop it up into bite-​sized chunks and start releasing it on social media. Furthermore, he said he plans to send a copy to every Democratic elected official in the country. “If you’re running for something, take this platform,” he said. “I don’t care. I don’t own it. It’s just basic economics.”

But don’t take it as a sign that Frye has ambitions of reaching higher office. “I’m here where the Lord wants me,” he said.

UGA Provost Leaves for Clemson

That time period coincided with corporate tax rates as high as 70%, which under Ronald Reagan and subsequent presidents were cut down to 20%. Frye wants to return to a more progressive tax system, including a 2% tax on billionaires that would raise an estimated $250 billion a year.

Frye said he thinks his ideas will appeal to both Democrats and Republicans. “We need to put people at the top of the list again. That’s the bottom line,” he said. “The government needs to work for the people, not the corporations.”

The Better Deal platform is organized around three principals—justice, autonomy and prosperity—which Frye said he believes are “fundamental rights of individuals in this country.” Among the specific proposals:

Ayers took over as Clemson president on Aug. 1, according to a July 17 announcement. Prior to becoming provost in 2025, he had served as dean of the Terry College of Business for 11 years. He was widely viewed as a potential successor to UGA President Jere Morehead whenever Morehead steps down.

Ayers signed a five-​year contract that pays him a base salary of $1 million per year, with the potential to pay him up to $6.6 million total with annual raises and bonuses, according to Columbia, SC newspaper The State. (Morehead earned $1 million last

year.) Ayers was Clemson’s second choice after a Michigan State administrator backed out. Ayers had initially removed himself from consideration for the Clemson job, but “circumstances changed,” the chair of Clemson’s board of trustees told The State.

Morehead then named Ron Walcott, vice provost for graduate education and dean of the graduate school, as interim vice president for academic affairs and provost. In addition, Henry Young, a department head in the College of Pharmacy, was appointed a vice provost overseeing academic and community engagement. f

ICE TAKES A FAMILY, LEAVING A CHILD ALONE AND AFRAID

endra, a 12-­year-­old girl living in the Hallmark mobile home park in Athens, was left isolated last Monday after both her parents and two of her grandparents were taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

At the time of publication, Kendra still does not know where her father is or if he remains in good health.

The detention of Kendra’s family happened early in the morning of July 20.

When Francisco, Kendra’s godfather and a legally documented immigrant from Zacatecas, Mexico, heard the news, he immediately told his wife Kerry that ICE had taken his family. Kendra’s father Carlos, her mother Laura, her grandfather Miguel and her grandmother Josephina, who is Francisco’s sister, were all taken. This left Kendra, who has a pending asylum application, home alone without a guardian.

Kerry, who is white, left work and headed for Hallmark as quickly as she could.

She refused to allow Francisco to go with her, even though he is a legal resident, because “ICE don’t care except for one thing, and that’s the color of your skin,” she said.

While at Hallmark, Kerry heard that Kendra’s family had been taken while working at the mobile home park where they live doing lawn maintenance, landscaping and house cleaning. According to video evidence taken by neighbors, ICE agents had pulled Josephina, a middle-­aged woman, from her

work vehicle so aggressively that she cried out in pain. She later told Francisco that she feared her arm might be broken.

“They tried to break my sister’s arms,” Francisco said. “Why? She’s no criminal.”

Kerry took Kendra to her home just outside of Athens while they tried to figure out what happened to their family and what they should do next. Francisco and Kerry got a phone call from Josephina later that night telling them that Laura, Miguel and herself were together and doing OK despite their ordeal. The three of them were taken to an ICE detention facility in Atlanta, where they now await their deportation back to Mexico.

While Josephina and Laura had only lived in the U.S. for about four years, Miguel had been living and working in Georgia peacefully for almost 40 years.

The whereabouts of Carlos, Kendra’s father, are still unknown to the family at this time.

Witnesses told Kerry that ICE agents had Carlos “down on the ground and were beating him with guns pulled in his face,” when he was detained, which was the last time his family saw him. He was taken in a separate vehicle and may not be in the same detention facility as the others.

Kerry said that she filed a missing person report with Athens-­Clarke County police and with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in an attempt to discover Carlos’ location, but to no avail.

“I don’t know where to go from here,” Kerry said. “We’re not trying to get him to not be deported, if that makes sense. We get that. We just want to know that he’s OK. This is his child,” she said, motioning to Kendra. “She has that right to know that ‘my Dad is OK.’ I need to hear his voice telling me that he is OK.”

For now, Kendra will stay with Kerry and Francisco, but long-­term, her future is unclear.

“I would like to keep [Kendra] here, she would have a good home,” Kerry said. “I think she would be better off here, but I also know that she wants to be with her mom. There are going to be some hard decisions to make for all of us.”

Zacatecas, Mexico, where Kendra’s family is from, is on the U.S. State Department’s “do not travel” list due to a risk of violence “from terrorist groups, cartels, gangs and criminal organizations.”

ICE Operations in Athens The detention of Kendra’s family comes amidst a large and continuing immigration crackdown in Athens-­Clarke County.

According to Heidi Schmidt of the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition, ICE took at least 11 local residents between July 17 and July 21, detaining them outside the county.

While far more detentions than normal, the actual number could be even higher than advocates are aware of.

Volunteer community observers continue to report ICE vehicle sightings, which are typically black or gray SUVs and trucks with tinted windows and windshields, according to Schmidt. From photo and video evidence provided by the coalition, the ICE agents responsible appear to be wearing military-­style vests but otherwise lack a uniform. Observers have primarily seen agents targeting people individually in Hispanic neighborhoods and at workplaces across town known to hire immigrants.

Members of the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition said in a press release that they believe none of the 11 detained people

have a criminal record.

The Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition connected Kerry’s family with a lawyer, although it is unclear if legal action will be able to halt the deportations or to extract Josephina and the others from detention.

Kerry’s family started a GoFundMe, which she says would be used for legal expenses, including Kendra’s pending asylum case, with any leftover funds going towards Kendra’s education.

Lori Garrett-­Hatfield, a member of the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition’s education committee and an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teacher in the Clarke County school system, said that there are many school-­age children in Athens dealing with ICE-­related trauma.

“It’s heartbreaking when we know our friends and neighbors in the community are, for all intents and purposes, kidnapped.

They’re taken,” Garrett-­Hatfield said. “From my personal experience as a teacher, we have kids who have major PTSD. They get angry. They get depressed. They don’t eat.

They’re afraid to come to school because they’re worried about what might happen to mom and dad.”

Kerry compared modern-­day treatment of immigrants in the U.S. to the way the Nazis treated Jewish people during World War II. “I don’t use these words lightly. But this is a modern day holocaust,” Kerry said.

“Just because it’s not called a concentration camp doesn’t mean it’s not. If they’re that cruel in public, how do you think they are being treated inside the building?”

The Athens Interfaith Sanctuary Coalition, composed of local Christian, Jewish and Muslim congregations, has also released a statement condemning the recent escalation of immigration enforcement in Athens. f

David Drake’s Works Stolen Through Slavery GEORGIA MUSEUM OF ART SETTLES AGREEMENT WITH POTTER’S FAMILY

A

stoneware jug made in the mid-­1800s by an enslaved man named David Drake belongs to the Georgia Museum of Art’s collection—one of approximately 250 identifiable pieces that remain from the tens of thousands ceramic vessels he was forced to create. On July 22, the museum and Drake’s descendants announced a historic agreement recognizing his heirs as the rightful beneficiaries of his artwork.

Drake was an enslaved African American ceramicist who lived in Edgefield, SC. At the time it was against the law to teach enslaved people to read or write, but Drake inscribed his jars with his name, the date and original verses of poetry. This was an act of defiance, asserting authorship over works that were legally owned and profited from by another. while Drake’s works passed on to museums and private collectors as pieces of cultural treasure.

“Just imagine how it would feel if your ancestor created artwork of incredible value, but neither he nor his family were ever allowed to benefit from the work,” Yaba Baker, a fourth great-­grandson of Drake, said in a press release. “My family and I are so pleased to have worked with the Georgia Museum of Art to secure this historic agreement and bring justice to our family after 175 years. We consider the Georgia Museum a partner in our efforts to recover our ancestor’s legacy, and we are grateful to the museum’s leadership for acting quickly and being responsible stewards of his artwork.”

The Edgefield district where Drake was born c. 1801 was an important center for stoneware production. Slaveholders Harvey Drake and Abner Landrum purchased David at some point before 1818. Landrum owned a pottery manufacturer and a newspaper, where Drake is thought to have started developing his craft and possibly learned to write. In 1849 Lewis Miles bought Drake and put him to work at Stony Bluff Manufactory, where Drake created most of his surviving vessels that were often used on nearby plantations. He remained there until slavery was abolished in 1865, then died as a free man in the 1870s.

Last year the Museum of Fine Arts Boston was the first to step up and recognize the wrongdoing of his work, returning two of Drake’s pieces to the family and leading by example for the ethical restitution of works created by enslaved Americans. The GMOA agreement transferred ownership of its 4-­gallon ceramic jar from the museum’s collection to the artist’s descendants, followed

by the museum purchasing the jar back from the family.

GMOA will continue to own and display its piece of Drake’s work, along with his history and legacy. Separate from this matter, the family also agreed to loan another of Drake’s works to the museum for display this fall.

“David Drake created work of extraordinary skill, beauty and utility while enslaved—work he was never permitted to own, sell or pass on to his own family,” said David Odo, former director and chief curator at the Georgia Museum of Art, in a press release. “This agreement with the Dave the Potter Legacy Trust LLC is a small way in which the Georgia Museum can recognize this history. I’m grateful to his descendants for their trust in this process and honored that our visitors will now encounter his work knowing his family’s voice helped shape how his story is told.” f

‘Edmonia Lewis: Said in Stone’

FIRST MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE FOR 19TH CENTURY BLACK AND INDIGENOUS SCULPTOR

he Georgia Museum of Art will debut the first major retrospective exhibition of sculptures by Edmonia Lewis, a 19th century Black and Indigenous artist who had close ties to the abolitionist movement. The exhibition, titled “Edmonia Lewis: Said in Stone,” will feature nearly 30 sculptures by Lewis from public and private collections in the United States and abroad from Aug. 8 to Jan. 3.

The exhibition is the culmination of a decade-­long effort by Shawnya L. Harris, curator of African American and African Diasporic Art at The Georgia Museum and co-­curator of the exhibition. “In 2016, I noticed that there was a work on the auction market, a small bust. And I remember asking our director, ‘Can we buy this? I think it’s important that we should do this,’” Harris said. The Georgia Museum did acquire the Lewis bust titled “Minnehaha,” which depicts an Indigenous woman inspired by Longfellow’s 1855 poem “The Song of Hiawatha.”

Having an Edmonia Lewis piece in the museum’s collection and care is particularly significant given that so many of Lewis’ works have been lost. Harris estimated that Lewis produced “hundreds” of works over her career, but Lewis left no personal archive.

“One of the main points about the exhibition is: How do you develop an archive on an artist where there’s a lack of an archive?,” said Harris. “Someone like Edmonia Lewis, the only thing she had an opportunity to do is to create. She didn’t have family who could say, ‘I’m going to donate this to a library or to a museum.’”

Mary Edmonia Lewis was born in 1844 in Greenbush, NY to a free Black father and a mother of Anishinaabe descent. Her mother, a skilled artist of embroidery and beadwork, died when Lewis was a child. Lewis was raised by her maternal aunts, spending the formative years of her youth within her Indigenous culture. With financial support from her brother, in the 1850s Lewis attended

New York Central College and Oberlin College, two of the few institutions that would accept Black female students.

Despite the more progressive stance of the colleges, Lewis faced significant challenges from racism that led to a violent assault.

Upon moving to Boston in 1863, she met Edward Augustus Brackett, a sculptor and abolitionist who taught her to model in clay. Lewis began producing portrait medallions of abolitionists such as William Lloyd Garrison and John Brown, and became deeply involved in the abolitionist movement, including forming a friendship with Frederick Douglass.

Seeking to study neoclassical sculpture, Lewis moved to Rome, Italy, where she found a community of American sculptors and produced some of her best-­known works.

Rome was Lewis’ primary residence for several decades, though she traveled throughout Europe and the United States to connect with fellow artists and activists, and to promote and sell her works. By 1901, she was living in London, where she died on Sept. 17, 1907, of kidney disease. She was buried in an unmarked grave at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Kensal Green. It wasn’t until 2017 that a headstone was installed.

With funding from the Terra Foundation for American Art, the Henry Luce Foundation and the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, as well as additional support from the Traditional Fine Arts Organization, the Georgia Museum of Art and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA formed a collaboration to conduct in-­depth research and curate a traveling exhibition of Lewis’ work. The collaborative also produced an over 250-­page companion book documenting Lewis’ biography that will be available for sale at the GMOA. The exhibition includes several works by Lewis that have rarely or never been publicly exhibited, such as “Clasped Hands of Gerrit and Ann Smith” (1872), created as a memorial to abolitionist Gerrit Smith and his wife, Ann. “There’s a one-­of-­a-­kind representation of an Italian peasant woman called a ‘Contadina’… Most of her portrait busts were of abolitionists or notable political figures, but that was something that was different,” Harris said. Viewers have another rare opportunity to see a plaster bust next to the finished marble. “We have a rare plaster bust of [Robert Gould Shaw], and we were able to put those two side by side, the plaster bust right next to the actual finished marble, to see how she was representing him in plaster before she actually finalized it in marble,” said Harris.

Lewis’ best-­known work, “The Death of Cleopatra” (1876), is not physically included in the exhibition, as the nearly three-­ton marble sculpture’s condition made it unable to travel. The sculpture was originally exhibited at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, but was lost for decades before being rediscovered by the Smithsonian American Art Museum in the 1990s and in need of significant restoration. “Said in Stone” will feature a 3D digital scan of the sculpture instead.

But even a small collection of Lewis’ work in one setting will be an achievement. With “Said in Stone” featuring about 30 sculptures by Lewis, it’s a rare opportunity, given that her remaining known works are within various private collections and museums across the world. “This will be the first and probably the last time that you will see this many sculptures by Edmonia Lewis in one setting at one time,” Harris said.

A free community open house event will be held on Aug. 22 with kid-­friendly activities from 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. followed by a reception ($15 for non-­members). Kimi Carter

Indie pop/folk artist Kimi Carter was born in the mountains of Tennessee and began following her impulse to write and perform music at age 13. Now 10 years, a degree in songwriting from Belmont University and a move to and from New York City later, Carter is back in Chattanooga and entering a new era with her music.

She’s released three singles so far this year, “It Only Gets Worse,” “cool!” and “I See Your Car Everywhere.” The songs are soft and bold at the same time, influenced by both her Southern roots and her time living in the city. Carter’s show in Athens is part of a six-­stop Southeastern tour named “I See Your Tour Everywhere” after the most recent of these releases. Vincas, Psychic Death, Coma Therapy Nowhere Bar • 9:30 p.m. • $12

Three of Georgia’s darkest, most intense post-­punk ensembles will take the stage at Nowhere Bar this week. Fronted by Chris McNeal, Vincas has been active in the local scene since the early 2000s.

The band describes itself as “Deep South cemetery stomp,” and is influenced by a smattering of macabre influences from H.P. Lovecraft to David Lynch, and sonic masters like Howlin’ Wolf and The Birthday Party.

Four-­piece dark wave band Psychic Death is Vincas visiting from Atlanta’s underground, bringing what it calls a “sonic assault” of noise, synths and distortion. Finally, local goth/no wave group Coma Therapy will play songs from its recently released self-­titled record, which compiles all of the band’s best material from the past five years. Reimaging Sophocles’ ancient tragedy in modern New York, Town & Gown’s production of Antigone explores the story’s classic themes of duty, defiance and destiny. This version is based on the play written by Jean Anouilh and adapted by Lewis Galantiere, which was first performed in 1944, at the same time as the Nazi occupation overseas, and later appeared on Broadway in 1946.

The question of the original version of the story remains: Will you serve fascism, or will you tear it apart with your own hands?

Performances of Antigone will take place Aug. 7–8 and 13–15 at 8 p.m., and Sunday matinees on Aug. 9 and 16 will be at 2 p.m.

Indie rock band Reptar emerged from the local house show scene in 2008, and spent its first few years touring heavily. It released its debut EP, produced by Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Washed Out), shortly after a head-­turning South by Southwest performance in 2011. Its debut record, Body Faucet, followed in 2012, with Allen producing once again. Its second and most recent record, Lurid Glow, came out in 2014, with local production from Andy LeMaster (Bright Eyes, Michael Stipe, Drive-­By Truckers). After that album cycle, lead guitarist and vocalist Graham Ulicny relocated, and he and other members of the band pursued alternate projects, regrouping on occasion in the years since. Ulicny, for one, can be seen as of late performing in projects like Terry’s Dolmen and Thick Paint. Now for the first time in several years, Reptar is taking the stage for a trio of shows in Athens, Atlanta and Minneapolis, joined locally by CDSM and Your Ex’s Pets. Spoil, Lilypad, Rapid Divide

After local coffee shop and venue Buvez closed at the end of 2025, its music booker Adam Lopez got in touch with longtime connection Kelly Petronis, who had opened the Flying Squid Comedy club the year before. Petronis wanted to bring live music into the space in addition to comedy, and Lopez brought to the table the necessary know-­how and connections. Since March, the venue has hosted weekly musical events booked by Lopez. Three hardcore bands have joined the club’s next musical bill to ring in the back-­to-­school season. The idea for the event came from Spoil lead singer Amelia Bradley. Lopez explains, “Both of us grew up on punk and hardcore, and a lot of us started going to local shows pretty young. So with The Flying Squid being an all ages space, we wanted to give a little deal at the door for kids still in school, both high school and college. Getting young folks to go to shows is the only way to keep a scene going.” [MB] f

You’ve likely already read a few headlines about the diarrhea-​inducing parasite that may or may not have been found on iceberg lettuce. Whether the Food and Drug Administration found cyclospora (the nasty bug in question) on Taylor Farms-​grown lettuce or not is somehow up for debate.

The cyclospora parasite is out there, wreaking havoc on folks’ digestive systems. I want you to avoid digestive distress while still enjoying this summer’s fresh produce.

NOW AND ZEN: Back in 2023, when film producer Bill Cody donated the original 16 mm reels of 1986’s Athens, GA: Inside/Out to UGA’s Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection, the big lift was raising funds for full restoration of the film and preparing it for a fresh release. Well, the fundraising went spectacularly, the film’s restoration is complete, and Athens folks can attend a free screening soon. But pay attention.

Ciné will host two screenings on Thursday, Sept. 24, one at 5:30 p.m. and one at 7 p.m.

While attendance is indeed free, you’ll need to reserve a ticket. As of this writing, tickets are not yet live, so keep checking athenscine.com, and grab yours once they are available. GET YOUR SHIFT TOGETHER: The fact is more hardcore punk, and punk in general, has likely been born out of commercial kitchens than any other blue collar occupation you can imagine. So when Degreaser describes its music as “back-­of-­house hardcore punk,” you’ll suspect its bona fides are likely fully intact. Then, when listening, you’ll know. Opening with the bombastic “Push,” which falls into its rhythm right at the 20-­second mark, the familiar pushmi-­pullyu of speed vs. trudge is ever present. The rest of this presses the gas full-­on, and is especially exciting on tracks like “Kick It On Down The Line” and record closer “Ain’t No Good.” This is also available as a limited edition cassette tape, which may actually be the most authentic way to experience it. SAVE THE DATE: The contributions T. Patton “The Wiz” Biddle has made to our Athens music scene are myriad and very special. As one of the 40 Watt Club’s first soundmen, he had a front row seat to the birth and infancy of our scene, and praise be, somehow had the presence of mind to document a gigantic portion of it. His online archives are a treasure trove of heretofore forgotten or dearly recalled bands and artists, and are an incredible pathway to visiting a

time long past. Now, he can use our help.

Last spring he spent two months in the hospital following extensive emergency surgery and in-­patient rehabilitation. He also endures the ravages of Parkinson’s disease.

He continues to need speech and physical therapy, home health care and home modifications for safety. To assist him, a benefit show is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22 at Hendershot’s. Featured acts are Pylon Reenactment Society, Grassland and one of Biddle’s favorites, the Michael Guthrie Band. Now, I’m old-­school enough to admit I’m a total sucker for country songs that begin with a pedal steel intro, so note that this song has that. HOW TO AVOID DIARRHEA-​INDUCING PARASITES

Eating out? Try local options over chain brands. This is Flagpole; of course I’m going to recommend eating local. As someone who has worked in and around restaurants for most of her adult life, smaller, local establishments go the extra mile when making sure that their employees adhere to food safety standards. Local establishments also generally have someone at the helm who lives in and knows the community—and their valued customers—intimately. You don’t have to be a Harvey who shows up every weekday morning for an egg white omelet and two slices of bacon for employees to care. The mere presence of a Harvey shows that there is care. Local eateries need neighborhood customers to keep coming back to stay in business. I’m not saying employees at chain restaurants don’t care, nor that they don’t have dedicated and food safe staff. I am saying local restaurants don’t have million-​dollar television advertising campaigns and food stylists on payroll to make up for a few bad apples, or tacos. Taco Bell, in the long run, will likely be fine, whether it fed its customers cyclospora or not.

Buy a head of lettuce, not the bagged salad. Experts have linked bagged lettuce to several outbreaks in the past. Michigan’s health department suggests avoiding all salad kits for the time being. Opt for a head of lettuce instead. Clean the lettuce under running water upside down to drain any dirt, pesticides or parasites down the sink instead of back into the leaves. It’s best to peel off and compost the top layer of leaves.

After a minute or two under running water, let the lettuce drip-​dry upside down for five minutes. Is a bagged option easier than a head of lettuce? Sure! Is it worth explosive diarrhea? Hell, no!

Rinsing with water is the best. There are a lot of veggie sprays and recommendations for rinsing produce with baking soda, white vinegar or lemon juice. In general, running

water for a minute or two knocks off the greatest number of goobers overall for fruit and veggies. If you’re worried about avoiding a certain pesticide, or washing a particular fruit, it could be worth reading up on the specifics. Otherwise, running water will do.

Buy from farmer’s markets. Local farms are the best bet for buying uncontaminated produce because, like local restaurants, they rely on customer relationships to stay in business. Most local farms offer ready access to bathroom facilities. All the Athens-​area produce farms I’ve worked on or toured touted a centralized handwashing station. This isn’t always the case for big corporate farms. Large scale sanitation studies across U.S. agriculture show gaps in CONGERDESIGN

access to bathrooms, handwashing stations and drinking water, especially when groups of non-​English speaking farm workers are needed to harvest a crop quickly. Many local farms are certified organic or certified naturally grown. Both certifications require record keeping for when manure or compost is added to plots and when veggies are harvested. These records are evaluated at least once a year.

Grow your own. Scientists have found past cyclospora outbreaks most often on parsley, basil, cilantro, lettuce, raspberries, snow peas and sweet peas. You can easily grow most of these in your backyard—and enough of them to fill your family’s dinner plates. Herbs are some of the easiest things to grow in the smallest containers. Lettuce, during a Georgia summer, is more challenging, but not impossible. Raspberries are a little harder because they require space and can be difficult to control once planted. I’ve found raspberry varieties that grow well in the South tend towards tarter flavors than varieties from Northern climes. Anyway you cut it, you don’t have to nix fruit and veggies this summer to avoid foodborne illness. f
