DA Proposes Gang Unit PLUS, BARBER STREET BIKE LANES AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

Barber Street Bike Lane Plan After the successful launch of the Prince Avenue bike lanes last year, more bike facilities could be coming to the Boulevard area if commissioners approve a separated bike path on Barber Street.

“Ultimately this whole area is going to have a lot of changes going on in the upcoming years focusing on safety,” bike and pedestrian coordinator Daniel Sizemore told commissioners at last week’s work session.

Commissioners sent back a plan in 2021 because they wanted more than just sharrows (“share the road” signs painted on the roadway) on the portion of Barber closest to Prince. The latest proposal continues a sidewalk and two-way cycle track all the way down to Prince, but at the cost of on-street parking.

The project is broken up into four phases.

An industrial section of Barber between Dairy Pak Road and the Loop would be reduced from four lanes to three to make room for a two-way cycle track and sidewalk. In addition, the intersection would be improved with crosswalks and truck aprons.

District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez is asking the Athens-Clarke County Commission for $250,000 to create a unit devoted specifically to prosecuting gang-related cases.

The unit would consist of a prosecutor, victim advocate and investigator who are specially trained to handle gang cases.

Currently such cases are randomly assigned to one of eight assistant DAs, depending on who is in which court that day.

ACC has seen an uptick in gang crimes since the start of the pandemic, which Gonzalez attributed to services being suspended and local schools going virtual, and the pandemic also created a backlog of cases in general while the courthouse was closed. While Athens had just four murders in 2022, illegal gun seizures were up 30 percent. The police department’s gang task force has expanded from three to 17 officers.

Gonzalez said her office has received assistance from Attorney General Chris Carr’s gang unit, which has seven attorneys and statewide concurrent jurisdiction, as well as a specialist with the Georgia Prosecuting Attorney’s Council. “They can help us, but they cannot deal with the amount of cases we have,” she told the commission at a Jan. 12 work session (rescheduled from Jan. 10 so Commissioner Allison Wright could attend a B-52s concert).

But some commissioners questioned the additional expense because Gonzalez already has nine assistant DA positions that are unfilled. She said they’re vacant because the county’s pay scale isn’t competitive with other circuits. “They can go 30 minutes down the road and get 20 or 30 thousand dollars more,” she said. lic meetings during the tenure of former superintendent Demond Means, often adding fuel to the fires of heated rhetoric. She ran unsuccessfully for the District 2 seat in 2020, losing to Gallagher, and has applied three times for vacancies on the board.

Stephens was briefly a candidate for mayor in 2018 and the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020 despite being below the required age of 25 to serve in Congress. He was selected over Bagby and others to fill the remainder of Frances Berry’s term in 2020. (Berry herself was appointed after longtime board member Vernon Payne resigned.) Later, it emerged that Stephens had misled the board about having graduated from Cedar Shoals High School and had fabricated dozens of donors to his short-lived mayoral campaign on official disclosures, which led to a state ethics complaint. After those revelations, Stephens resigned and said he would check himself into a mental health facility.

Before the selection process began, each candidate spoke for five minutes about why they wanted to join the board. Bagby said she wanted to be very involved in the day-to-day operation of schools and even of classrooms and teachers. Interference in school operations is a big no-no, given accreditation agency Cognia’s criticism of board operations in years past. District 8 representative Nicole Hull asked Bagby how her approach wouldn’t bring more criticism from Cognia. Bagby said she knew her boundaries.

Butts said she wanted to join the board to help children and that she wanted to be a team player. Her comment resonated with board member Patricia Yager. “That’s a really important part of being on this board,” she said. “We’ve worked really hard to work as a team.”

Stephens told the board, “I’m the only candidate who’s done the job effectively.”

The selection process worked like this: A board member could nominate a candidate without having a second. Whoever got the majority of votes was declared the winner.

Board President LaKeisha Gantt said the board had “three qualified candidates” from which to choose, each one with strengths.

She nominated Bagby to fill the open seat.

Newly seated District 9 representative Mark Evans nominated Stephens (though he voted for Butts), and Yager nominated Butts, the winner. As Butts was nominated first, the board voted on her nomination first, and after she won there was no need to vote on the other nominations.

The board also discussed changing the names of two elementary schools to honor w the first Black teachers at those schools.

Alps Road Elementary would be named for Bettye Henderson Holston, who taught students out of a janitor’s building when she joined the faculty, her son told the board.

Chase Street Elementary would be named for Johnnie Lay Burks, the school’s first Black teacher.

Board member Linda Davis said Scott Killian was the first Black student at Chase Street. She hasn’t talked to him, and he hasn’t talked about any lasting trauma from his time at Chase, but she wants the school to be named Burks-Killian Elementary.

Davis then talked about trauma and said she couldn’t understand honoring one person when so many people were involved in moving the district forward and obeying the Supreme Court ruling forcing desegregation. Gantt disagreed, saying recognizing one person doesn’t minimize another. The school board will vote on the new names at its February meeting. [Rebecca McCarthy]

Casualties of the postgame celebration downtown included portions of the “Frequencies” public art installation on Clayton Street, as well as about a dozen newly planted trees and several street signs and vehicles. Videos shared on social media showed mostly college-age fans climbing utility poles and lighting discarded Christmas trees on fire. Police arrested about 25 people, according to Mayor Kelly Girtz. to make people genuinely believe anyone thought we were going 7-5. I don’t know what kind of brainwashing technology Kirby has tucked away in the bowels of Butts-Mehre, but I imagine he could sell it to the CIA for a pretty penny if he weren’t more interested in winning football games.

Kirby has also proven himself adept at not only recruiting elite talent, but supplementing it with less-heralded players he’s developed. The Dawgs will continue to stack top-five classes along with programs such as Alabama and Ohio State, snagging fivestars such as Jalen Carter and Kelee Ringo.

But he’ll also develop no-names like Bennett from a walk-on into the greatest Georgia quarterback of all-time.

Or Jordan Davis from a three-star to a first-round pick. Dan Jackson, Eric Stokes, Ladd McConkey, AD Mitchell—the list goes on. There’s no reason to believe we won’t continue to find and develop those diamonds in the rough on top of all the blue-chip talent.

In the end, the reason to believe that the Dawgs will continue as Kings of College Football comes down to one man: Kirby. Saban is the GOAT, but Kirby is the coach best positioned to challenge him in our lifetime. Kirby is 47. When Saban was 47, he was coaching at Michigan State and had never won a bowl game, much less a national championship.

The landscape of the sport is ever-changing, with NIL and the transfer portal and God knows what comes next. But as long as King Kirby is in charge, we’re going to be at the top of the sport and have a shot at a natty every year.

And with two in our pocket and a chance for more on the horizon, the throne is ours until someone takes it.

In the very early morning hours of Sunday, Jan. 15 following the national championship celebration, a fatal single-vehicle car crash killed Georgia football player Devin Willock, 20, and staff member Chandler LeCroy, 24, according to authorities. Just before 3 a.m. LeCroy was driving with Willock and passengers Warren McClendon, Georgia offensive lineman, and Victoria Bowles on Barnett Shoals Road when the vehicle went off the road into two power poles and several trees.

McClendon received minor injuries, and Bowles had serious injuries from the accident.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing at the time of print. This tragedy is a devastating loss, and doubly heartbreaking coming off a celebratory week for Georgia Bulldog fans, staff and players.

“These two special people meant the world to our football program and athletic department,” UGA athletics director Josh Brooks said in a statement on Twitter.

“We are working with our medical staff and mental health and performance team to ensure our staff and student-athletes have all the support they need during this extremely difficult time.” [Sam Lipkin]

Jerry and Krista Slater of The Expat opened the high-end Slaters Steakhouse in Five Points with caviar and fancy meats.

Ask anyone in Athens what kind of year 2022 was for restaurants, and their vibe will almost undoubtedly be that it was a really terrible one. But, here’s the thing: Apart from a few high-profile closings (yes, we’ll miss The Grit forever), it was actually kind of an amazing year for new restaurants in our town. That’s a hot take that even I have a hard time believing, but the evidence backs it up.

At the very end of 2021, ZZ & Simone’s opened in Five Points serving beauteous Italian food in a beachy, retro environment. Its owners, Shae and Ryan Sims, may have closed their other restaurant, Dinner Party, but at the end of 2022, they replaced it with Bar Bruno, an intimate wine and aperitivo-focused bar with a few bites to eat. Mimi Maumus opened Sidecar, a small space attached to her main gig, home.made, on Baxter Street with a great bar, a delightful menu of smart bar snacks, playing cards to facilitate interaction with your hang-out partners and a tremendous feeling of fun. Sidecar never seems like it’s trying too hard, and it gives Maumus a venue in which to experiment without annoying her regulars at the restaurant.

It was one of the most fun restaurant experiences I had this year, and I’d absolutely go back on my own volition.

Equally as fun is Puma Yu’s, which opened in the Southern Mills complex on Oneta Street, off Chase Street with, again, a serious bar and a menu that pairs well with booze consisting of small plates geared toward sharing. Big flavors and a take-meor-leave-me attitude show a restaurant-ish thing that is comfortable in its own skin.

The Globe reopened, successfully walking the tightrope of just new enough but not so new that it ticks off the people who’ve been going there for decades. It’s clean and sweet. The tables don’t wobble. The menu

Farm Burger finally opened its Athens location, Tapped Athens opened a wine bar in the Bottleworks and Athens Cooks opened as a fancy cooking store with more to come. Hendershot’s served a wonderful East Asian inflected menu briefly early in the year, then went back to snacks only, and then had a new menu by the end of the year. The Jittery Joe’s Roaster Tasting Room moved from Barber Street to Fritz Mar Lane.

Baxter Street added Ponko Chicken and Roll It Up Ice Cream and Mushroom Head by the dorms. In the Beechwood area, Crumbl Cookies and gusto! opened, and Ru San’s closed but moved to Watkinsville and will reopen as Sushi One & Bobalicious Cafe in the Market Center shopping center on Jan. 23. The Eastside added La Montaña Mexican grill in the former Fatz and Mochinut donuts and bubble tea

CREATURE COMFORTS EMPLOYEES ORGANIZE INDEPENDENT UNION

orkers at Creature Comforts have organized the Brewers’ Union of Georgia, or BUG, one of the first of its kind in the nation. The union began the process of engaging with management last Friday, and an election will be set soon to formalize the relationship and allow the brewery’s nearly 100-person staff to partner with executives in shaping the company’s future. Widespread support among the company’s staff has organizers hopeful of a successful vote.

Union organizers say they are excited to carry the popular brewery from regional award-winner to national forerunner. “We could become the industry leader,” says one of the members, who asked for anonymity, citing how few breweries match a superior product with the progressive company culture Creature Comforts has built. “We want to help raise the bar across the industry.”

The brewery’s rapid expansion in the last several years has put pressure on the company to abandon the values that distinguished it, say union members. “We exist to foster human connection,” says the company on its website. To become a “force for good in the world” and “support the city they love” the company built a unique family-like culture that enabled its remarkable success in its early years. “The core values espoused by Creature Comforts essentially demand a union,” according to a statement from the prospective union.

“We’ve lost many amazing people due to this situation,” says employee Katie Britton.

“Forming this union is a way to ensure we can retain the amazing people still here and make it better for those to come.” Instead of considering leaving themselves, BUG organizers are rededicating themselves to the company through the union. “We’ve all bought in so much and put so much of our equity into [Creature Comforts],” says a

Spencer Britton, a research manager, reached out to Mariah Parker, then an Athens-Clarke County commissioner, who connected the nascent union with the Economic Justice Coalition’s Workers Center, a resource specifically designed to facilitate worker efforts like Creature’s.

After meeting with Broderick Flanigan, Joseph Carter, Enrique Reyna and others at the workers’ center, an innovative strategy was devised to create BUG as an independent union not under the umbrella of a pre-existing national union. Historically, most unions have formed under the aegis

LIKE, OMG!: The now decadesold band The Shut-Ups will celebrate the release of its newest album The ShutOhmu Ups Are Girls Singing Songs, which hilariously, albeit a bit reductively, skewers online tropes, slang and casual conversation, and all the low-hanging fruit of internet/influencer culture. At least, that’s what I took from it.

WOODSHEDDING: Rob Smith (Wieuca, Jack’s Johnson) just released his debut solo album under the name RV Smith. The nine-track album is titled Melt Water Pulse, and Smith recorded it in Atlanta and New York. The record is full of synth swells, razor-thin electronic beats (quite similar to those used by Salem and others) and an overall indie-electronic vibe. In particular, I dug the tracks “Freedom Fuel,” “Skullcandy” and “Thusly.” The album closes with an actual original take on Simon & Garfunkel’s “I Am A Rock” but is cataloged here as simply “I Am Rock.” I suppose there’s a certain amount of trap-rap influence here, but only just slightly. This was recorded and performed all by Smith but was mastered by Murk Daddy Flex (AKA Terence Chiyezhan).

FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS: In a very special performance the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine will play the Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall Monday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. This is a presentation of UGA’s Performing Arts Center.

OHMU LIVE AT POMPEI: Experimental improviser and electronic composer Winston Parker released a live video shot across two days at Ciné under his Ohmu moniker.

He reports that this was shot with a friend visiting from Texas. The performance spans three pieces, of which Parker says the seeds were planted by being “… always gravitated

towards improvisation, drawn to a potentially transcendent state of expression. This music was initially inspired while playing off of the dissonance of a plane engine echoing in the atmosphere.” I can tell you now that you’ll bliss out harder to this if you cast it to a big screen and turn off all other distractions. That said, though, you can also just listen and enjoy it nearly as much. Haitian-American singer-songwriter Leyla McCalla comes from a long line of activism. Her father served as executive director of the National Coalition for Haitian Rights, and her mother founded Dwa Fanm, an anti-domestic violence organization. Her grandfather ran a Haitian socialist newspaper. Now, the former cellist of the Grammy Awardwinning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops is presenting a new multi-disciplinary work that explores her cultural and personal history. For two years, McCalla dug through the archives at Duke University for recordings of Radio Haiti, Haiti’s first privately owned Creole-speaking radio station. The completed work weaves storytelling, dance, video and material from Radio Leyla McCalla Haiti to give a voice to the marginalized people of a country mismance of Grieg’s Piano Concerto as well. The Shut-Ups Are Girls Singing Songs A Q&A WITH DON CONDESCENDING

the years since its founding in 1999, AthensAtlanta quintet The Shut-Ups has tried on a variety of conceptual and creative approaches but has always remained steadfast in its ability to produce hooky, new-wave power-pop gems. The Shut-Ups often write tongue-in-cheek from the perspective of fictional characters, and the new album The Shut-Ups Are Girls Singing Songs is no different. Led by keyboardist Don Condescending, the band’s current lineup includes guitarists Ben Spraker (Normaltown Sound Machine) and Jason NeSmith (Casper & the Cookies), bassist Thad Thompson and former Flagpole music editor Ballard Lesemann on drums. The band will celebrate the album’s release with a show at Ciné on Friday, Jan. 20. Below, Condescending illuminates the backstory behind the latest collection of songs.

Flagpole: How would you describe the overall concept for this album?

Don Condescending: This record is a comprehensive exploration of the female perspective, which after all these years, is still not well understood. The songs are technically written and played by men, but the protagonists are all young women.

FP: For those just tuning in, what have been some of the other concepts or focuses for past albums of The Shut-Ups? DC: Inspired by the general insanity of 2020, we recorded (mostly in separate locations) the relatively minimalist EP I Was Made For These Times, which we advertised as “the least helpful political album ever made.” Our fifth album, Just Another Generation (2018, Stuff), is a whirlwind voyage through humanity’s various intersections with Time.

That was preceded by the colder and slicker Imaginary Dancer (2009, Waikiki Records, Japan), a dance album about alienation, conceived as a song-by-song rebuttal to the soundtrack to the movie Saturday Night Fever. And in 2006, we released The Stud Album (Fraudulent Records), which we billed as a collection of “seduction strategies for the twenty-first century.” And so on.

FP: What’s the backstory that inspired the album’s concept?

DC: Several years ago, I had an acquaintance who enjoyed a brief tenure as head of artist development at Virgin Records. He asked me if I would like to write and submit songs to be considered for the debut album of a sixteen-year-old girl named Hope. She was going to be a very big deal. I had never written songs from a female point of view before, but I got to work, feeling only slightly ridiculous but enjoying the challenge. I wrote several songs, sent the demos and waited.

I heard back from the acquaintance; his helpful criticism was to the effect that the songs should somehow be…better, but that I could try again. I revised the songs and added a few new ones. They were better, but none of them were chosen for the album, which seems, coincidentally or not, to have tanked, along with Virgin’s high hopes for its new artist. Once it became clear that my songs weren’t getting on the album, I resolved to craft a Shut-Ups album full of

songs sung from a female perspective.

FP: What was it like to attempt writing songs from the imagined perspective of someone else?

DC: I’m fond of employing unreliable narrators who bear little resemblance to me, but prior to working on this project, those narrators were all male. Writing from a female point of view was odd, but not as hard as writing from a record-company executive’s idea of what a female point of view would be: that I couldn’t figure out. It was also a situation, I decided, that precluded failure, because if a song came across as a botched attempt to understand what it was like to be a woman, that very botchedness would be interesting. I’m not sure why, but so far I am incapable of writing female characters that I dislike, whereas my male characters, as much as I may feel that I understand them and love them and even in some cases resemble them, almost always make me dislike them to an extent.

FP: What sort of changes did you make to the songs while reworking them to become new material for The Shut-Ups? JENNIFER SPRAKER

DC: Most of the songs on this album are fairly true to the originals, though the language is somewhat coarser. For example, there is now a reference to vomit. There are a couple of songs that were written more recently to fit the concept. One of these is a love song to Kurt Cobain that would never have been considered for an actual teen pop record.

FP: Do you have a favorite track on the album?

DC: Not really. I like all of them, but what I find most interesting is that the narrators have widely different approaches to life. Some of these approaches contradict others. I don’t think these people would be friends with each other. Perhaps some would be enemies! It’s nice to be in such a mixed company. f
