Is Demond Means Leaving?

PLUS, A NEW DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

By Blake Aued and Chris Dowd news@flagpole.com As of this writing, Demond Means is still superintendent of the Clarke County School District. By the time you read this, he may no longer be.

Means stunned the community toward the end of what had been a routine school board meeting Nov. 21 by saying he would resign. In retrospect, there were signs that something was afoot. Means and Linda Davis and Charles Worthy, his two closest allies on the board, pushed at the beginning of the meeting for an executive session to discuss personnel, but other board members seemed puzzled about why they would need one. The only personnel items were a handful of noncontroversial ones, like filling the long-vacant principal’s position at Fowler Drive Elementary School and promoting Career Academy principal Lawrence Harris to replace the departed Claire Suggs as chief of community engagement and strategic partnerships.

The answer became clear about two hours into the meeting. Longstanding frustrations spilled over when the board discussed a letter to the state Professional Standards Commission, which certifies educators, informing the PSC that three allegations of unethical behavior made against Means in May don’t warrant sanctions by the PSC. The board voted 5–2 to send the letter, written by members Kara Dyckman and Greg Davis, and to add a phrase proposed by member Tawana Mattox to the end of the letter stating that, while Means should be cleared by the PSC, “we [the board] will determine the best measures for addressing these concerns.”

Mattox said she wanted to add that phrasing because, “We have to begin holding the superintendent accountable for things. He’s not perfect.”

Vice President Linda Davis, running the meeting in President LaKeisha Gantt’s absence, tried to stop Mattox from discussing the amendment, arguing that it wasn’t germane. Mattox accused Davis of “playing games.”

In both cases, Mattox, Greg Davis, Dyckman, Patricia Yager and John Knox were in the majority, with Linda Davis and Worthy in opposition. Board member Frances Berry resigned last week.

That’s when all hell broke loose.

“Madame chair, I recommend an executive session, because by virtue of that vote, you don’t want me as superintendent, and we need to have a discussion about how I leave,” Means said. “So I am making a recommendation for executive session.”

to have an executive session—and during that discussion at the start of the meeting, no mention was ever made of Means or the PSC letter. And at a Nov. 7 work session, the board and Means openly discussed their response to the PSC complaint, and everyone seemed to agree on how to move forward.

“Your vote this evening, the amendment from Dr. Mattox, is political in nature,” Means continued. “I don’t think it was unbiased. It’s extremely disappointing, and what I will share with you is, you don’t want me here. And that’s fine if that’s what your decision is, and by virtue of the vote, that’s what you’ve shared with me. But I want the public to know I would have said this in executive session. This is politically motivated. This vote solidifies the efforts of many to rid me of the district, and so you are successful. You have been successful.

And so whenever we can convene in executive session to discuss my exit from Clarke County, I will embrace it.”

Several people in the audience began to beg Means to stay and hurl insults at Mattox, who asked CCSD Police Chief Mark Sizemore to come to the front of the room.

“You don’t need to be here. You can go back where you were,” Means told him.

“I feel threatened,” Mattox said. “I need the chief up here. People up front, heckling me. This is the last night.”

Linda Davis announced she was skipping the last item on the agenda—the board’s response to a complaint to accreditation group Cognia alleging micromanagement, an equally contentious issue—“because of the deterioration of the meeting.” The board voted to adjourn.

As the meeting broke up, Sizemore escorted Mattox to her car as several people followed her, telling her, “We know where you live,” and, “You should feel threatened.”

The following day brought little clarity.

CCSD issued a statement saying that Means “remains under contract and continues to carry out his duties as superintendent.” It referred questions to Gantt, who did not return a call seeking comment.

Xernona Thomas, Means’ chief of staff, made similar remarks at a rally in support of Means at the district’s central office in the H.T. Edwards complex on Friday afternoon, according to Linda Davis. The hour long rally drew about 50 people, mostly African Americans, to hear speakers like local civil rights leaders Fred Smith, Alvin Sheats and Charlie Mattox urge the black community to support Means and his stated mission of equity in education for black children.

Davis added that Gantt has been in touch with Means and was trying to schedule an executive session to discuss his employment status, but it won’t happen until after the Thanksgiving break. What happens next is anyone’s guess. Maybe that session ends with a pink slip and a six-figure severance check for Means. Or maybe this was all a bargaining tactic, and he emerges with a contract extension. Stay tuned. [Blake Aued]

The ACC Historic Preservation Commission recommended a West End historic district that includes all shaded properties (dark properties are contributing; light ones are non-contributing, meaning not historic). A compromise proposal, though, could create a local district that mirrors the national historic district, outlined in black.

Compromise Proposed on Downtown Historic District The Athens-Clarke County Commission is headed for a vote Tuesday, Dec. 3 that could decide the future of downtown Athens, and a compromise proposal now on the table makes it more likely that a new West End historic district protecting landmarks of Athens black history and the local music scene will pass.

A number of property owners spoke in opposition to a proposed historic district for the western end of downtown at a commission meeting last week. They were joined by members of five downtown churches who also oppose the new district.

Historic districts require that property owners, including churches, gain approval from the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) before they can renovate or demolish their properties. They also require that any changes meet certain design guidelines.

Most property owners in the area don’t want that extra hurdle in their way, and some expressed concern that a historic district could harm their property’s resale value. One property owner even blasted the proposal as an inconsistently applied “weaponization” of historic preservation.

Commissioner Melissa Link, the main proponent of this idea, sees a new historic district as necessary to protect the western end of downtown from development that she believes a majority of Athenians would oppose. “It’s only a matter of time before we see a luxury student high-rise directly across the street from the 40 Watt,” she said. According to Link, “That would be the end of Athens music culture.” She implored her fellow commissioners to support the plan, which would also protect the historic African American business district celebrated every year at the Hot Corner festival on the corner of Washington and Hull streets. “How impactful would that festival be, if that block were replaced with a luxury student housing project?” wondered Link.

Link kicked this all off in January, when she succeeded in blocking the demolition of the Saye Building, owned by First United Methodist Church, on North Lumpkin Street by establishing a one-year moratorium. Since then, the HPC has held public

forums, developed design guidelines and conducted a survey of property owners.

Most property owners who responded to the survey oppose the new district, but the HPC nevertheless recommends approval before the moratorium expires in February.

A downtown historic district established in 2006 only extended from Lumpkin Street east. The new local historic district, as originally proposed, would include all of the west end of downtown, but also buildings west of Pulaski Street, out to Newton Street and north of Dougherty Street. That means it would extend beyond the already existing national historic district, which was originally established in 1978 but provides little protection, since most land-use decisions are made at the local level. Tommy Valentine, executive director of Historic Athens, spoke in favor of the new local district, but limited his support to only the area overlapping with the national district.

Commissioner Mike Hamby seemed to support shrinking the size of the proposed district as well. That would let four of the five downtown churches off the hook, and might be an attractive compromise for some commissioners who are currently undecided.

And Sunday, Valentine announced that Historic Athens has endorsed a commission-defined option from Hamby and Link that would shrink the local historic district boundaries to the national district— roughly Lumpkin to Pulaski and Clayton to Hancock, with a few buildings on Broad and Dougherty included as well. This would preserve the core of the district along Clayton and Washington, where support runs strong, while removing many of the more contested properties on the outskirts.

“Our organization was founded more than 50 years ago in response to concerns about preserving the culture and architecture of Athens,” Valentine said in a news release. “For decades, part of that work has been dedicated to expanding protections for our historic downtown. We are excited and encouraged that commissioners Hamby and Link have found a way forward on a compromise that enhances local protections for some of the most defining features of our community.”

While carefully researched, the staff-proposed boundaries proved politically polar-

izing, Valentine said, and there were doubts about whether it could pass. Sidelining First Christian Church, Redeemer Presbyterian, First Baptist and First AME, as well as other controversial properties, increases the chances of the district passing. The new proposal also recognized a key West Washington Street property as contributing based on research brought forward by owner Drew Dekle. [Chris Dowd and Blake Aued]

Commission Race Gets Crowded Longtime community activist Carol Myers formally entered the District 8 commission race this month, joining two other candidates seeking to replace Andy Herod, who is not seeking a fourth full term.

“I’m running because I care about the Eastside, and I want to make it thrive,” Myers said in a news release. “I want my children and grandchildren—and all of us and our families and friends— to have a bright future here on the Eastside and throughout Athens. That’s why I’ve spent years as an active community advocate—listening, asking questions, building partnerships, getting things done. I’ll be a strong voice for the Eastside, for all of Athens.”

Myers is a retired Carol Myers teacher and administrator at Athens Tech and has lived in Athens for 35 years, including 24 years in District 8. Her daughters attended Athens Montessori and Cedar Shoals and Classic City high schools.

She is currently chairperson of the Athens in Motion Commission. She was a leader of the successful 100% Athens Renewable Energy Initiative, which lobbied the commission to commit to clean and renewable energy and sought to include funding in SPLOST 2020. She’s been active

with Envision Athens, the Bike Pedestrian Master Plan Citizen Committee, the SPLOST Citizen Advisory Committee and Bike Athens. According to her campaign, she is also an advocate for a just criminal justice system, for more investment in local infrastructure and for improved emergency ambulance service.

Her platform includes attracting businesses and a farmers market to the Eastside, affordable housing, affordable child care, higher wages, criminal justice reform, fighting climate change, recreation programs, safer streets and welcoming immigrants.

“I decided to run because I still have more to give to my community,” Myers said.

“I was in a very fortunate place to retire

from Athens Tech at a young age. After four years going through some life transitions and riding my bike a lot, I’m ready for more.”

Also running are couples therapist Andrea Farnham—who recently challenged her opponents to a debate at the Clarke County Jail to highlight felons’ loss of voting rights—and Kamau Hull, a lawyer who lost to John Knox in an Eastside school board race in 2016. [BA] f

School-Based Education Is Essential to Democracy As a longtime resident and educator in Clarke County, I’ve been following the recent discussions over how much authority local school councils should have in relation to the authority of the superintendent, district office and school board. The Clarke County School District is one of the first designated charter school districts in Georgia and has a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate what our local schools can do when they truly belong to their local community of students, educators and parents.

Charter district designation allows schools to gain waivers from state regulations in order to use better forms of student assessment and evaluation, curriculum, staff development, resource and staff allocations, teaching methods and creative partnerships with businesses and nonprofits.

Allowing decision-making at the school level is the best way of reviving democracy.

In an age when political incivility dominates the news, young people and adults across America are increasingly questioning the importance of democracy itself. Recently, The Atlantic magazine devoted its entire issue to the theme, “Is Democracy Dying?”

Our public schools have done little to support the health of our nation’s democracy, and school-based educators are not to be blamed. What we have experienced is the misguided prevailing belief that top-down mandates with rewards and punishments would improve academic achievement, reduce the achievement gap between groups of students and show progress on underlying social and economic issues in our country. However, after almost two decades of state, federal and district accountability measures and ratings, overall achievement in our nation is no better, and children are now living with the greatest economic disparity since the Great Depression. What we don’t need is more of the same.

School-based educators, students and parents want to see more relevant school work. They want students’ learning to connect to pressing issues in their communities and make their world a better place to live. Our local schools in Clarke County, with the exception of a few buildings still to be renovated, have attractive and modern facilities, an abundance of talented and incredibly hard-working educators, caring and engaged parents and generous, forward-looking community leaders in our Classic City. What our schools lack is clearly delineated authority to act upon their local concerns and aspirations. CCSD being a designated a charter district can provide the means to give each school the latitude and resources to carry out their plans. This can only happen if district agents willingly shift authority to support and facilitate decision-making at the local school community level.

Our children need us to listen to their concerns. We need to commit to making their lives better. We need to help them use their education to make important and lasting changes in their communities.

And we need to help them learn that their

leadership and civic engagement are at the very center of resuscitating a faltering democracy.

Save Ike & Jane This letter is to the owners of the Normaltown building that currently houses Ike & Jane. The news that this beloved neighborhood institution is closing has been received with shock, disbelief and tears. As the closing date comes closer, there is a deep sense of loss for a true cornerstone of our community.

This is the place where virtually every time we go, we run into someone we know.

This is the place where, no matter how long the lines are, the staff is always friendly and patient, especially with little ones who struggle mightily to make their choice from the dazzling array of tasty treats. This is the place where there is always a bowl of clean water for the canines who frequently accompany their humans. Finally, this is the place that has always subscribed to the values of fresh food, sustainability and giving back that Athenians are devoted to.

Too often, we only belatedly realize the value of what we have after we lose it.

The lines at the bakery last weekend were especially long, and the sentiment among patrons was one of, “I always thought this place would be here forever.” We heard about the lady who, upon hearing the news, drove all the way from Nashville, TN, with her baby granddaughter, just so they would have the shared experience, and drove right back after eating. There was talk of weddings catered, anniversaries celebrated and mystery doughnuts at football games.

Personally, the very first breakfast that my family had in Athens upon our move here some years ago was at Ike & Jane.

Over the years, the community has watched with a sense of helpless inevitability as the unique feel of Athens has been chipped away by the loss of beloved local institutions. Ike & Jane was among the very first businesses of its kind to serve Normaltown when little else was there. As the years have passed and the desirability of the neighborhood has skyrocketed, it is ironic that one of its cornerstone businesses is being forced out because it cannot afford to operate there anymore.

I recognize that you, as the owners of the building, have the right to decide its future.

But surely, there is a solution that allows you to realize your vision while preserving the character of the neighborhood? Perhaps a lifetime supply of free doughnuts could help change your mind?

My attempt at levity aside, I also recognize that there is little chance this letter will effect any change. However, I cannot help but try, because this one hits close to home.

I certainly hope that the vision you have for this location will foster the same sense of community that Ike & Jane is beloved for.

Anti-Semitism Strikes UGA JEWISH STUDENTS’ DORM ROOMS VANDALIZED

least three times this semester, Jewish University of Georgia students have found anti-Semitic vandalism in their dorms.

Ariana Dinberg, a freshman, said the first incident happened in August. Dinberg said a poster with the letters of Sigma Delta Tau, the Jewish sorority on campus, was torn off her door. She said she reported the incident to her resident assistant.

“It already made me feel almost ashamed,” Dinberg told Flagpole. “But when this happened, I hated that people knew someone Jewish lived there based on my poster, and the reaction from whoever did this was immediate anti-Semitism.”

She said she chose to take down the poster instead of taping it back up so that another incident wouldn’t happen.

However, Dinberg said the words “All Heil” with a swastika underneath were written on the white board outside her dorm in October. “I was shocked, but more hurt,” she said. “I know anti-Semitism has always existed around the world, but I also think it’s become more prevalent lately.”

Dinberg said she contacted the Equal Opportunity Office, University of Georgia Police Department and University Housing about the incident. According to the police report, there was no apparent connection between the August and October incidents.

As of Oct. 15, Dinberg said EOO informed her that the university was unable to identify the person or people responsible.

Flagpole confirmed two reported cases where swastikas were drawn on doors of Jewish students’ rooms. Another UGA student reported she returned to her dorm room in Russell Hall on Nov. 9 to find a swastika drawn on laminated name tags on her door.

On Nov. 11, the student reported it to the Equal Opportunity Office, which

advised her to file a report with UGA police.

The Nov. 18 police report states that the symbol was drawn with a black dry erase marker on the student’s door. The victim told police that swastikas were drawn on other doors on her hall. “A total of 18 doors that could have potentially contained the drawings,” the report says. However, the symbols had been erased, so police were unable to confirm that.

Since the drawings were erased, police said there was no damage to property, and the incident did not warrant a criminal trespass investigation.

“We are aware of reports of offensive symbols written on the message boards on the doors of rooms in two residence halls on campus,” UGA communications director Greg Trevor said in a statement. “Whenever the university receives complaints of racist or discriminatory conduct, we refer such matters to our Equal Opportunity Office in accordance with applicable laws and policies.”

The anti-Semitic vandalism gained more attention after the Young Democrats of UGA posted a press release on Facebook documenting the incidents and condemning the acts. “We are a community which is stronger when we refuse to accept hate in any form and combat prejudice and xenophobia whenever it arrives on our campus,” according to the Young Dems’ statement.

Max Harris, a Jewish student at UGA who is a member of the Young Democrats and the Student Government Association, said he was comforted by the fact that students were alarmed about these actions on campus. But he was not shocked to hear it was happening at UGA. “I was very disappointed that national events that I see happening all the time made their way to UGA, because I know UGA to be a very welcoming place… But I was also jaded by it as

well,” Harris said. “If you look at this from a global perspective, this wasn’t unique.”

Cas Mudde, an international affairs professor in the UGA School of Public and International Affairs, has spent the majority of his career researching political extremism, populism and far-right movements in Europe and the United States.

Mudde said there has been anti-Semitic and racist vandalism on U.S. campuses across the country. Just this month, George Washington University, Arizona State University and Syracuse University have responded to anti-Semitic acts on campus.

Mudde said the reported incidents at UGA are “deeply disturbing, as they seem to target Jewish students by sending clearly anti-Semitic and threatening messages.”

“The university should take these incidents very seriously, even if they look more like ‘pranks’ by fellow students than targeted actions by far-right organizations,” Mudde said. “UGA should not tolerate any type of bigoted vandalism, whether it is meant as a prank or political intimidation.”

Harris said he follows the news on anti-Semitic incidents occurring worldwide. He noted that on Nov. 12, the Federal Bureau of Investigation released hate crime statistics showing that Jewish people were the most targeted group of anti-religious hate crimes. The 2018 FBI Hate Crime Statistics report states 59.6% of anti-re-

ligious hate crimes were motivated by anti-Jewish bias.

Harris said it’s important to realize Jewish college students are only two generations from the victims of the Holocaust.

“Our parents have a very close relationship with the Holocaust, in particular. We’re only one step away from discrimination at its worst form,” he said. “So, anything like this happening is very jarring.”

The Jewish community as a whole is no stranger to anti-Semitism as a whole, but the UGA community doesn’t experience it regularly, at least not in this form, Harris said. Though the incidents on campus were shocking to him, he said he doesn’t believe the UGA Jewish community’s physical safety is at risk. “I’m more worried about what this means for the UGA community’s attitude toward minorities overall and less about the Jewish community’s physical safety,” Harris said.

Survive and Advance GEORGIA CONTINUES TO WIN UGLY AGAINST TEXAS A&M

By Cy Brown news@flagpole.com It wasn’t pretty, but with these Dawgs, it rarely is.

Georgia defeated Texas A&M 19-13 at Sanford Stadium on Senior Day in the schools’ first meeting since the Aggies joined the SEC in 2012. And if that’s what we can expect from a Georgia-A&M game, I hope it’s another eight years before they play again.

If you missed this one, don’t worry, because it played out almost exactly like every other game against a tough opponent this season. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before…

and getting points whenever you can.

Defensively, that means taking some lumps but keeping the opponent out of the end zone by any means necessary. It’s as basic as you can get in football. As legendary UGA defensive coordinator Erk Russell famously put it, “If we score, we may win. If they never score, we’ll never lose.”

If we’re going to beat LSU in the SEC Championship Game, that’s how we’re going to have to do it, albeit against a much better quarterback and offense than any we’ve seen this season. There is roughly a zero percent chance to win if it turns into

The defense largely dominated the game, holding the Aggies to negative one rushing yard and 274 total yards. Jake Fromm (11-of-23, 163 yards, 1 TD) and the offense struggled, although D’Andre Swift managed to eclipse the century mark on the ground.

With the offensive struggles, Rodrigo Blankenship was once again relied on to provide the bulk of the scoring, hitting four field goals. A&M had the chance to spring the upset at the end, but the defense dug in, and the Dawgs escaped with a narrow victory.

With his four field goals, Blankenship passed Blair Walsh for first on Georgia’s all-time scoring list with 418 career points.

And he did it in his final game at Sanford.

It’s crazy to think the most popular player during one of the most successful stretches in program history was a kicker. Congrats and thanks to Rodrigo and all the other seniors. DGDs. All the issues we’re used to reared their heads in the game, as did all the solutions that have helped us achieve a third consecutive 10-win season. At this point, we are who we are. As much as the offensive issues suck, they likely ain’t gonna change now, with one week to go in the regular season. If this Georgia team is going to win, odds are it’s gonna be ugly. Forget style points. It’s all about survival now.

Georgia’s recipe for survival is simple: Bend, don’t break. Offensively, that means not taking risks that’ll lose you the game

any kind of shootout. If LSU scores more than 30 points, it likely means you can kiss the SEC Championship goodbye.

Next week against Georgia Tech is a different matter. The hated Jackets are 3-8 and unbelievably bad in the first season under new head coach Geoff Collins. This will be Tech’s Super Bowl—an upset win over Georgia would render all its losses this season moot—and the Jackets may come out guns blazin’. But on superior talent alone, we should be able to beat Tech. So if you’re hoping to see a Georgia offense put up some points and dominate a team this season, the Tech game may be your final chance.

It should also give you some hope moving forward that these Dawgs have yet to play a complete game. Of course, that’s troubling at this point in the season. But it’s also encouraging when you consider we’re 10-1 on the verge of an SEC Championship and CFP berth without one so far. Maybe there’s another gear they just haven’t found yet.

But when the LSU game rolls around, be prepared for another typically Georgia display. And be prepared for the fact that no neutral fan in America will be in our corner.

Frankly, LSU is fun to watch and Georgia isn’t. Kirby Smart’s “Us vs. The World” mentality actually has some grounding in reality now, because almost every neutral would rather see LSU in the College Football Playoff and will be rooting for them to beat Georgia. The good news for us is that their opinion doesn’t matter. If we win, we’re in. f

on’t look now, but Athens is bursting with young musical talent—and we mean young. Boasting some of the most original band names around, these gifted teenagers came out of programs like Nuçi’s Space’s Camp Amped, middle and high school orchestras and Full Moon Studio’s School of Music. They may be barely old enough to drive, but they’re just as skilled as your average jaded townie. Here are six teen bands you should check out.

ing a name for itself by playing just about every venue in Athens, along with AthFest, Porchfest, Athtoberfest, the Wild Rumpus and more. The four-piece originally called itself A Chinese Restaurant Koi Pond before deciding to shorten the name.

Bassist Dillard says he and guitarist Ivy had a band that broke up just before they found guitarist and singer Perkins and drummer Pope. “We all come from different places and different backgrounds and inspirations, and I feel like that’s part of what makes us unique,” says Dillard. The band has four songs currently released as the Funky Floaty Fishbug Melodies EP and has 16 others ready to record at Full Moon Studios with Jay Rogers.

Recently, Fishbug has made its way onto radio stations across Athens and even as far away as New York. Selfdescribed as “pop-punk with a meshing of different genres,” Fishbug blends styles with its unique lyricism and inspired sound.

The next step for AD Blanco Fishbug is to record a full-length EP and plan a tour. When asked where the band would like to play most, Evans says Athens is his favorite city to play. “There’s no place like home—there’s no place like Athens.”

The five members were assigned to each other and ended up continuing the group after camp ended. Their namesake is a “meme-ified” YouTube video where someone says, “I figured out why city boys don’t drive lifted trucks very much… Swowce.”

“We were like, ‘That’s funny,’ and we took the name,” says vocalist and guitarist Zwart, who describes Swowce as “broadly experimental hip-hop noise.” The band’s lyrics address many topics, but arguably

The name comes directly from the band’s drummer, White—it’s his first two initials and his last name in Spanish. With blues and psychedelic rock influences, the fourpiece has been booking and promoting on its own, playing venues all over Athens and drawing inspiration from beloved locals like Love Tractor, Dashboard Saviors and The Glands.

Clan, The White Stripes, The Cars ABOUT: Named after the high school, Clarke Central started six years ago when guitarist and vocalist Lynn’s computer lab teacher paired him with drummer Pope for a talent show.

The first song they performed was “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles, and they’ve been performing together since with bassist Hebenton.

Originally, they called themselves The Cannons before switching it for an admirable reason. “Oh, I just thought it would be funny if I [could] piss someone off with the name of my band—it would be a complete success,” Lynn says.

The three-piece draws inspiration from a wide range of music and has a mixed bag of styles, including rock, jazz and pop. Lynn says two of his favorite memories in the band have been playing a lock-in with fellow students and the time he smashed a real guitar on stage at a school performance.

“If this can be my source of income for the rest of my life, that’ll make me the happiest person in the world,” Lynn says. “And if we get a couple fans along the way, that’ll be cool, too.”

Do you want to make a band?’” says drummer Evans. “And that was it.” About four years ago, Cheese Dream was born, taking its name from a random word generator.

The group describes its sound as alternative hard rock with punk influences, finding inspiration from older and newer bands.

Evans says they have learned the most so far out of releasing a self-titled EP and playing with other bands.

All four members are either 17 or 18 and are unsure of what comes next. “We’re all sort of in a point right now where we’ve either started college or are about to, so we don’t really know who will be where, so we’re just playing it by ear and writing new music,” Evans says.

The Voltures LINEUP: Bryson Carithers, Blaze Mason,

Grace Kanavage, Orion deRevere, Alex Redmon INFLUENCES: Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana ABOUT: Jumping out of Camp Amped in the spring of 2016, The Voltures have released one full-length album, Kaleidoscope, in 2018 and have continued writing music since.

The Voltures were originally a cover band, playing 1990s hits and other favorites.

After a while, they started to write their own music. “Getting the opportunity to record music that I’ve worked on and had a part in writing has been the coolest thing for me,” drummer Mason says.

The Voltures have played local events like the Athens Farmers Market, AthFest, AthHalf and the Twilight Criterium, as well as venues like the 40 Watt Club, The Foundry and more. The next plan for the young band is to record two new songs to release as singles and play more shows around town. f

aith, spirituality and finding room for intellectual growth while parsing out a non-secular push-and-pull have long served as rich fodder for many an introspective songwriter. From country music’s enduring man in black, Johnny Cash, to indie rock stalwart David Bazan, the struggle has always been real—fertile ground for harvesting lyrical poetry that hangs in a balance of tension and resolve.

For Athens songwriter and producer Andrew Blooms, born Andrew Huang, this internal struggle remains steeped in quiet imagery and personal metaphors, ever present but never spelled out completely in songs such as “Humility,” “My Time Will Come” and the title track from Blooms’

debut full-length LP, Never a Waste, whose release he will celebrate with a show at the Georgia Theatre Dec. 3. Still, sweetness and innocence guide the billowing atmosphere and non-linear narratives that lie at the core of Blooms’ songs.

In the final moments of the album’s title song, Blooms sings, “I’ve grown to believe that our beauty and pain/ Were strangers who’d meet at the end of the day/ But they’ve always been twins who don’t look quite look the same/ Singing love is never a waste.” The song unfolds around soft metal strings and a delicate beat that pushes the music along. Blooms’ gently booming voice floats on top of the rhythms and melodies, embodying the harmony and existential ruminations that come with experiencing life in real time.

“A lot of the songs on the album are about loss and losing another time in my life,” Blooms says. “But each one is essentially a reminder to myself that nothing is ever wasted—even things that feel like a failure. I am experiencing tons of things that are just failing—old ways of living, old ways of thinking, people, life. It’s all a reminder to keep moving forward and to never view anything that breaks as something that was a waste of my time.”

At 26 years old, Blooms says there is no one, single experience upon which the album’s themes and imagery are built. “It’s really more about a loss of youth or a loss

It’s a quality that takes shape on Never a Waste, most notably in the song “A Day Like This,” which Blooms says is one of the more poignant pieces of music he’s released so far.

“That song is really about experiencing loss, but a lot of songs have a lot of hope, too,” he says. “That’s where I find myself,” he adds. “I’m realizing all this crazy stuff about life, but at the end of the day, I’m still a pretty hopeful person. I’m trying to live between those two worlds,” he says, “to live with a sense of balance.” f

Among many other personal blessings, this year I found myself incredibly thankful for the enduring spirit and talent of our Athens music scene. This year has brought week after week of incredible, fresh and creative records. As much as I’ve been inclined to disparage certain ones, there were very few instances where something produced locally could be dismissed out of hand. I’ve been truly amazed at the thoughtfulness and diligence of the overwhelming majority of our songwriters and musicians. So, thank you, friends. Very much.

SUCH A WINTER’S DAY: On Sunday, Dec. 1, The Solstice Sisters will release their second holiday album, Maybe by Christmas. GATHER ’ROUND: Family band Check the Signs has been particularly busy lately after a long time of not playing out much. They did a whole residency at the Georgia Theatre Rooftop not terribly long ago, too. Back in the spring, they released the sweetly charming album This Time Around. Now, I know what you’re thinking, you old rocker: Family band? Sweetly charming? How good can this be?

Well, punk, if you dig fully realized songwriting and ace musicianship all wrapped in a tradition that could be described as The Cowsills meets Nick Lowe, that’s how good it can be. The family in question is longtime locals the Towes, and Check the Signs is Scott (bass and vocals), Mindy (guitar, saxophone, flute, clarinet, vocals), Mason (drums and vocals), Lauren (keyboard and vocals) and Erin (vocals and horn). The band began many years ago when the kids were much younger, and it’s exceedingly cool to see how they’ve grown and how well this unit gets along.

As human beings, they’re tops, and as songwriters and musicians, they’re deeply dug in to melody, harmony and hooks. record a few weeks back named Highway Robbery that runs on for 13 songs. Musically, it breaks no new ground, but in a quite charming way, it harkens back to the original folk revival of the late 1950s and early ’60s. It’s all definitely more “Lemon Tree” than, say, “Tom Dooley,” too.

The sweet heartache of “Pocket Change” is wonderfully lyrical and tells well a common tale. Same thing goes for “Accumulation of January,” the swagger of “Liminal Space” and “Cosmic Joke.” I was almost turned completely away from this due to exhausting titles like “Fuck Tom Brady”— which could actually crack a smile on even the most jaded rocker’s lips due to the mishmash lyrics—and “Lucy in the Sky With Douchebags.” But after getting over myself and giving it an honest listen, there’s quite a bit of really nice material here. Even though I still think it’s way too long, I can easily go back and enjoy the highlights. And so WUOG 90.5 FM’s 10 Most-Played Recordings can you at bananatheband.

Neighborhood” where Rogers tells his neighbors about Lloyd. The transitions from New York to Philadelphia are visualized through the same sort of models familiar to the neighbors of Mister Rogers. Finally, Hanks, a beloved actor with a truncated range, does what he does best. His Fred Rogers goes beyond an uncanny impersonation—he eventually subsumes the real Mister Rogers. Unless one goes back and watches reruns of the classic children’s program, Hanks’ performance will be how they remember Mister Rogers. He may even be the only Mister Rogers many viewers ever know. The magnitude of this loss may best be measured in society’s increasing devaluation of simple kindness.

First off, if you want to soak up the cultural relevance of Fred Rogers, last year’s Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is the superior option I would recommend over Marielle Heller’s biographical drama. Bracingly, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is not a standard biopic. The movie’s real protagonist is Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), the proxy for reallife journalist Tom Junod, whose worldview was transformed after meeting Mister

To mark the band’s 40th anniversary, New West Records is reissuing its debut 1979 single, “Cool” b/w “Dub,” remastered

by Jason NeSmith, himself a member of local tribute act Pylon Reenactment Society. In honor of the single’s release, the remaining three Pylon members will sign copies for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event. Georgia Theatre · 8 p.m. · $12–15 Since its formation in 1999, local Grateful Dead tribute crew Cosmic Charlie has played around 800 shows, using the iconic California jam band’s music as a heady foundation while incorporating its own members’ varied influences to create a unique and immersive sound. Saturday at the Georgia Theatre, the group will present another installment of its most ambitious undertaking, Dark Side of the Dead, which invites Pink Floyd’s viscous classic Dark Side of the Moon to the party. Cosmic Charlie will play that album in its entirety—complete with two drummers, four keyboardists, backup singers and a saxophonist—sandwiched between two sets of Dead favorites. [GV]
