Animal Control Reorganized, E-Scooters Delayed

By Blake Aued and Chris Dowd news@flagpole.com Mayor Kelly Girtz signed an agreement on the Bethel Midtown Village redevelopment last week with Valdon Daniels, chairman of the Athens Housing Authority. The AthensClarke County Commission approved the memorandum of understanding last Tuesday at its monthly voting session, and it was signed the following day at a joint meeting of the two boards that doubled as an open house. The MOU describes the commission’s intent to use $39 million from SPLOST 2020 to support this redevelopment, called the “North Athens Project,” if and when voters approve SPLOST in November.

Bethel Midtown Village was built in the 1960s and is showing its age. According to Commissioner Melissa Link, the housing project is in “terrible, terrible shape” because the previous owner, Atlanta-based H.J. Russell, has not done the necessary maintenance. Even so, Bethel sits on some very valuable downtown real estate. For residents of Bethel, an unwelcome but likely outcome might have been a new luxury apartment complex on the site where their homes once stood. “If we hadn’t gotten our hands on this property, it would have gone to a private developer, and you might have The Mark 2 there,” said Link, referring to a downtown student apartment complex.

Rick Parker, executive director of the AHA, promised complete transparency through “dozens and dozens” of meetings with residents going forward. According to Parker, residents will even be involved in shaping the final design of the project.

After some discussion by commissioners about prioritizing an audit of the Board of Elections instead, both items passed unanimously. The commission’s Audit Committee will discuss those future audits in more detail.

The commission also extended the ban on electric scooters (established in December of 2018) for six additional months, or until June 4, 2020. This was necessary because the commission’s Legislative Review Committee found the issues surrounding these scooters to be extremely complex.

Part of the complexity involved creating a definition of “shareable dockless mobility devices” that distinguished scooters from electric-assisted bicycles, which the state of Georgia recently classified into three groups. The commission reauthorized bike share programs, including e-bikes, but only for those of class I (i.e., bikes that give a boost only when the rider is pedaling and not when traveling over 20 miles an hour).

Commissioners and staff also need extra time to find a scooter company willing to play by their rules, and for the development of a pilot program to reintroduce these scooters into the wilds of Athens. Will Birds fly again? It’s possible, but if the ban is lifted, it seems clear that they will no longer be allowed to block sidewalks and delay pedestrians, as they did previously. [CD]

Trump and his Oval Office minions. Across America, calls for Trump’s impeachment are growing louder and faster than was the case during the Watergate scandal that led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974.

Nixon was riding high after his landslide victory in the 1972 election. His administration dismissed the Watergate break-in as merely “a third-rate burglary.” When Nixon spoke in Macon on Nov. 18, 1973, thousands turned out to show support for the

Today, momentum for impeachment has grown speedily and steadily in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives, which has the power of impeachment. To remove the president would require a vote of the Republicancontrolled Senate, and that is not likely as long as many in the Senate show profiles in cowardice with their fawning fealty to Trump. When Trump’s nemesis John McCain ran for president as a Republican in 2008, he used the slogan “Country First.”

Today’s Republicans put party over country with their rubber-stamping of Trump’s reactionary regime.

During Nixon’s Watergate criminality 45 years ago, Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein used their newspaper stories and their book, All the President’s Men, to expose the crookedness of a president who had run for office on a call for “law and order.” Today, in these times of Trump, the reporters who wrote All the President’s Men are warning America about all this president’s mendacity.

On Oct. 1, Bernstein compared Trump and Nixon by saying, “Both presidents wanted to undermine the very basis of democracy, which is free elections… Here’s the big difference between Watergate and what we’re seeing now: If Republicans are willing to go along with this, it is going to change our history, because Republicans became the heroes of Watergate who finally said, ‘We cannot tolerate a corrupt president who undermines our electoral system.’” Woodward concurred, saying on Oct. 2, “You need to look in a comprehensive way at everything in the Trump adminis-

president, but strong voices of opposition were also heard. I was among a large group of dissenters there to protest the perfidy and policies of the Nixon White House.

Nixon supporters’ chants of “four more years” often were drowned out by the voices of protesters countering with shouts of “five to life.” Placards included such sentiments as “Make Georgia the Impeach State” and “The Emperor Has No Clothes.”

Just a few months later, I attended a march and rally by the National Campaign to Impeach Nixon that took place in Washington on Apr. 27, 1974. A spirited throng 10,000 strong marched through the nation’s capital hoisting signs saying, “Throw the Bum Out” and “Jail to the Chief.” Labor activist Dolores Huerta of the United Farm Workers told the crowd, “We can’t afford to sit history out.” Longtime dissident Dave Dellinger warned his audience that “Nixon tried to introduce a type of modified fascism to this country.” By August of 1974, Nixon was swept out of office by a bipartisan revolt against him.

Conservative icon Barry Goldwater brought Nixon the news that he faced removal from office by votes from both GOP and Democratic senators. Nixon resigned rather than face impeachment, removal from office and possible criminal penalties.

Once again, we live in a time when Americans cannot afford to sit out history.

Donald Trump’s machinations pose a clear and present danger to our nation and our planet. In 1975, a year after Nixon’s resignation, I wrote in the Athens Observer weekly newspaper this warning: “Our country can fall into the jaws of a garrison state—if we let it.” That warning still applies today. f

Doggy Dress-up LOCAL PUPS STRUT THEIR STUFF AT FOURTH ANNUAL BOO-LE-BARK

Sunday, Athenians will get another chance to see dogs in costumes parading around one of our most historic neighborhoods when Boo-le-Bark on the Boulevard returns for a fourth annual edition, kicking off Athens’ Halloween season with a daylong dose of furry fun.

While cute dogs in creative costumes on its own is nothing to bark at, this year’s parade has been amped up with a theme: ”Boo-le-Bark Rocks and Rolls.” As the title suggests, event organizers plan to pay homage to Athens’ music history with themed decorations, local musicians and, hopefully, one or two dogs dressed as Michael Stipe.

Live music will be incorporated into every part of the event, including registration, the parade itself and the carnival, which takes place at the Jittery Joe’s Roaster after the parade is over. Local band New Horizons will

Boo-le-Bark is presented by and benefits Athenspets, a local volunteer organization that helps prevent overpopulation in local animal shelters and funds medical procedures for the less fortunate pets. Lisa Milot, chair of the Boo-leBark committee and executive director of Athenspets, says Boo-le-Bark is equal parts fundraiser and fun event.

“It’s become an entire neighborhood event, where people will line the streets and porches to watch the dogs,” Milot says. “The parade benefits Athens, which also benefits the neediest pets in our community.”

Last year, Athenspets raised about $7,500, most of which came from the local businesses that sponsored the event. This year, Boo-le-Bark’s primary sponsors are Phil Hughes Honda, Yellow Dog Bakery, Voss Metal Works, American Pest Control and Bulldog 93.3 FM. Though Boo-le-Bark is best known for its parade, it also includes a Canine Costume Contest, as well as a Canine Carnival. The costume contest has five categories: Cutest Costume, Most Creative Costume, Best Themed Costume, Best Handler/Pet Combo and Best Overall. While dogs and handlers are encouraged to dress according to the theme, all costumes are welcomed.

Each winner will receive a gift basket filled with gift cards and prizes from local businesses, and the Best Overall winner will be the grand marshal of the parade. As an added bonus, spectators of the contest can expect to see a local dog play the piano.

Last year’s Best Overall winner was a pup dressed as Oscar the Grouch, but Milot says there is one dog she will never forget: the Best Overall winner from the very first Boo-le-Bark in 2016.

“It was a corgi mix dressed up like a loaf of Wonder Bread,” Milot says. “So simple, but so wonderful.”

The parade will end at the Jittery Joe’s Roaster, where there will be food vendors and live music. Parents can expect a family-friendly station where kids can play dogthemed games and participate in interactive events.

The Boo-le-Bark board has worked to make the day special for pet owners, as well as those looking to add a furry friend to their home. Both Athens Clarke-County Animal Control and the Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter will bring an assortment of dogs to the event for people to pet and, if they’re so inclined, adopt.

All of Sunday’s events are free to attend, and registration to walk in the parade is $15 in advance and $25 the day of, if space allows. The costume contest is an additional $10.

ith fall weather setting in, it’s once again time for a longstanding Athens tradition. On Oct. 12, the North Georgia Folk Festival returns for a 35th year to Sandy Creek Park, bringing a diverse array of live music, art, kids activities and food.

Co-sponsored by the Athens Folk Music and Dance Society and the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department, the festival features 12 bands performing across two stages, including the Caroline Aiken Band, Jonathan Byrd and the Pickup Cowboys, The Moonshine and young Guatemalan guitar wizards Grupo C21.

usic fans often hear about an upcoming album that is about to be, or just was, mastered. That’s good news for us, because it means it’s nearly available for our ears, but what is mastering? What can an artist expect to get back from the process? I recently asked two Athens-based mastering engineers to explain their job.

Joel Hatstat of High Jump Media says, “It’s my duty to get an album or a song and figure out what needs to be done to get it to the point of completion that whoever made it wants. Sometimes that’s from a conversation with the artist, sometimes I ask for a YouTube link, or it’s obvious from the style they’re playing.”

extreme moves, so [a mastering engineer knows] the limitations of what sounds right. I think that comes just from doing it and hearing the results over and over, and listening to things you did three to four years ago and deciding, ‘I did that right or did that wrong’—reviewing your process.”

Says NeSmith, “You need an objective set of ears. Everybody’s hearing is different.

Everybody’s listening situation is different.

Even if you’ve checked it on your home stereo, your car stereo and your friend’s stereo, it’s unlikely that you have the sort of setup that [mastering engineers have]—an optimal listening environment with experienced ears. That, to me, is the most valuable thing that I do.”

Chase Park Transduction’s Jason NeSmith told me, “The art of mastering is to take finished mixes, intuit where they want to be and help them get there. The science is to take that result and prepare it to be manufactured.”

I asked both engineers what kind of tools they use in the mastering process. They mentioned equalizers, which allow them to turn up or down bass, treble and mid-range frequencies, and compressors, which reduce the difference between music’s quieter and louder parts—both of which are also used in recording and mixing. A key mastering tool is saturation. Hatstat uses a “color box” to add small amounts of gain and distortion to give cohesion to things that sound harsh or detached from the rest of the mix.

NeSmith uses a bit of saturation for “projects that wanted to touch tape or tubes but maybe didn’t have the budget.”

I wanted to know more about what I’d get for my money if I had an album mastered. What sets a mastering engineer’s work apart from anyone else armed with the tools above?

The mastering engineer’s value comes from “experience and having made that move many, many, many times and seen the results of it, so knowing how much to do and where to do it,” says Hatstat. “People with less experience seem to make more

Indeed, one of the biggest advantages of having a project professionally mastered is gaining the mastering engineer’s fresh perspective on a project. “As a person working on a record, you can focus on one thing to the detriment of everything else,” says NeSmith. “By the time I get something, [bands] have listened to it a billion times and are happy with it. I ask myself what I can do to improve this while leaving it just how they’re happy with it and have approved it.”

Mastering engineers make somewhat different choices for a project based on its intended delivery. “Will it be cut to vinyl?

Spotify? Bandcamp? It’s more of a functional thing than just the sound aesthetic,” says Hatstat. NeSmith adds, “I’m going to deliver a different end result for an LP or a CD than for high-definition downloads than I would for streaming. Those probably all sound the same, but the way they’re prepared are different.”

Having your music mastered gives it one last chance to sound as good as it can and to be formatted properly for each delivery method, and it gives you the confidence that a seasoned pro has cleared it for replication. Says NeSmith, “I’ve listened to a lot of records, I’ve worked on a lot of records, and I know whether what I’m listening to is problematic or not.” f

record review LeeAnn Peppers: For Asha, With Love (Independent Release) Athens singer-songwriter LeeAnn Peppers follows up her highly personal 2017 debut, What Isn’t Said, with an even more intimate venture into the depths of loss and grief. For Asha, With Love, her latest eightsong album, revolves around the passing of a dear college friend from cancer nearly 10 years ago, and shirks overt melody in favor of what she refers to as “narrative poetry” to convey her lingering memories and emotions.

As one might suspect, based on its subject matter, this is the kind of album that demands something of the listener, but Peppers’ elegies are deeply rewarding to those willing to put in the time, and they invite the kind of human connection lost in so much of contemporary music. “Mansfield, OH” and “The Fire of Love” stick out as especially gratifying, each offering an extended outro—the former with a really neat ambient harmonic section and the latter with a minute or so of recorded rainfall—that provides its own opportunity for personal reflection. The seed for a new exhibition was planted last fall on the 20th anniversary of his journey. While reflecting on the life-changing significance of his travels through revisiting the body of work, he decided to post an image and backstory on social media each day, a routine that coincided with a refocus on his meditation and yoga practices.

“I would spend about 20–30 minutes each morning sitting quietly and attempting to meditate, but mostly thinking about the image I was going to work on and share that day,” said Thrasher. “I went back into the negatives for the first time in 18

or 19 years, and also looked back at my journal from the trip. Also, with YouTube and Google Maps, I was able to find and examine closely some of the locations of my photographs, and watch video of almost everywhere I went. So, the memories all came flooding back. At the end of the pro-

Interestingly, revisiting the negatives presented a new opportunity to bring formerly imperfect images to new life through advances in digital editing software.

Original black-and-white 35mm negatives were scanned, then cleaned up to remove any dust or scratches. Using Lightroom, Thrasher was then able to adjust very specific aspects of each image, like contrast, lighting, burning or dodging, that were not possible in the original dark room.

“I’m very excited about the wall of 16 images from the trains, and a wall of nine images about water, but I’m most excited about the long wall with 44 images from Varanasi,” he says. “It’s easily the best series of photos I’ve ever made, and it all centers on one street corner just up the hill from the famous burning ghats on the Ganges—Varanasi, or Benares, as it’s also known—it’s one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Despite Georgia forcing the Vols to punt on their first drive, and the Dawgs marching 84 yards on 12 plays to take an early 7-0 lead on theirs, things quickly went awry in Knoxville. Freshman quarterback Brian Mauer tossed a 73-yard touchdown pass to Marquez Calloway to tie the game 7-7. Rodrigo Blankenship hit a 50-yarder on Georgia’s next drive to take a threepoint lead, but Tennessee responded with a methodical, 10-play 75-yard drive to go up 14-10 as the second quarter began.

would give him. If there is a position group that could lead to Georgia’s downfall his season, it’s the secondary.

But there was plenty of reason for Georgia fans to be confident. Namely, there was Jake Fromm, who put in his best performance so far this season. From Georgia’s first drive of the game, when he went 4-for-4 for 59 yards, it was clear that Fromm was clicking on all cylinders. He finished the night 24 for 29 with 288 yards, two touchdowns and still no turnovers this season.

I’ll admit it. At that point, I was scared.

Georgia-Tennessee had all the makings of an upset. Road game? Check. Night game?

Check. New quarterback brimming with confidence? Check.

But even though I knew there was a possibility of the Vols pulling out all the stops and scoring the upset of the year—unseating their own loss to Georgia State for that spot—I also knew all the weapons the Dawgs were about to deploy. And I knew that we’re Georgia, and they’re Tennessee.

In the end, though, it was just the right amount of scared to make the eventual blowout all the more satisfying. After Tennessee’s go-ahead touchdown to begin the second quarter, Georgia scored 33 unanswered points to win 43-14. Two touchdowns in the final four minutes of the first half to give the Dawgs a 26-14 lead assured that the once-raucous Tennessee crowd knew its place heading into halftime as the possibility of an upset evaporated before their eyes. It was a classic case of playing with your food before you eat it.

Georgia’s main issue in the early going was the pass defense, which has been the biggest issue for the defense as a whole this season. Richard LeCounte got burned

by Calloway on that 73-yarder. After that, Mauer’s confidence grew, and the crowd was brought to life. Mauer passed for more than 200 yards in the first half, mostly dinking and dunking and taking what the secondary

And while the pass defense was suspect, at least in the first half, the run defense was not. Georgia held the Vols to just 70 rushing yards. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, the running game was as good as you’ve come to expect. Even though no individual eclipsed 100 yards for the night, the Dawgs rushed for 238 yards as a team.

Fromm’s performance and this disparity in the run game are what allowed Georgia to maintain control of this game even when Tennessee held the momentum early.

What handed Georgia the game late and assured a dominant final score was the havoc created by the defense. LeCounte snagged an interception in the second quarter to halt a promising Tennessee drive in its tracks and make up for that mistake on Tennessee’s first touchdown. The drive after going up 36-14 on a Brian Herrien touchdown, a brutal sack and forced fumble from Eric Stokes led to a 60-yard scoop and score from Tae Crowder to give the Dawgs their second defensive touchdown of the year.

Even though this game had the potential to go very wrong, in the end, Georgia covered the 24-point spread and dominated the Vols. It wasn’t a perfect performance, but it was a performance that showed just how good the Dawgs can be when they buckle down. And to put the icing on the cake, having trailed since 1993, Georgia now leads the all-time series 24-23-2.

Familiar Spaces, Fresh Faces WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN AT SQUARE ONE AND EDEN’S CAFE

By Hillary Brown food@flagpole.com Fried smelts, under the appetizer section, are a delightful snack, very lightly breaded and well seasoned. You can add malt vinegar if you want, but they’re so delicate that you really shouldn’t. The smoked fish dip, made with wahoo, mahi mahi and amberjack, is possibly the best thing on the menu, served with buttered, herby toast points that are both quite bad for you and quite tasty.

DÉJÀ VU: When I first wrote about Square One Fish Co. (1298 Prince Ave., 706-353-8862), 10 years ago, it was on Thomas Street downtown, where the Hyatt Place now sits.

What I said boiled down to, “If you figure what to order, you’ll have a very nice meal,” and that holds true. The same folks are running the place, so it’s no surprise. They spent a few months ripping out most of the inside of the P&M Army Store in Normaltown, painting a giant blue octopus across its facade and creating a fairly nice interior. There are some captain’s chairs scattered around, but mostly, it doesn’t read like a seafood shack, and the menu prices are on par with a swankier type of restaurant.

You can expect to pay in the ballpark of $30 for an entree, just like at Chuck’s Fish, and if you plan on getting some appetizers and some drinks, it is not an inexpensive evening.

Some things are worth the price. Others are less so. The “tuna four ways,” which comes on an octagonal mirror—shades of Vegas—is fairly underwhelming, elaborate presentation aside, given that the four ways (sesame-crusted, poké, blackened and citrus seared) aren’t all that different in the execution.

The whole yellowtail snapper escabeche is better, topped with Square One Fish Co. a whole mess of spicy pickled vegetables. It will, however, stare you in the eye, which you may not like. Pickley stuff is a common thread and a strength, appearing as a garnish on many things.

The charcuterie board has some nice stuff on it, but none of it seems made in house: fat sticks of lox; small, thin-shaved tangles of bresaola, prosciutto and speck (the latter is the best); slices of duck; some cheeses; and a jam.

It’s a fun way to eat, but the one at The Expat is better.

The bar has a good selection of beer and some cocktails, one of which includes Figment kombucha. The restaurant is open for dinner from 4:30 p.m. daily and does happy hour, including food specials, from 4–6 p.m. weekdays.

on preserved foods is a vegan restaurant once more, with the opening of Eden’s Cafe (706-850-8501), which bills itself as a plant-based grab-and-go. The hamburger mural is still there by the outside seating, but they now refer to it as a veggie burger, and the boat from the previous tenant also remains.

Maybe grab-and-go is the right move for a space with such a small eating area (a few chairs, some outside benches). Eden’s Cafe doesn’t have a huge selection, but what it has is fresh, carefully made and ethical, down to the compostable wrapping on the sandwiches. Everything except the soup of the day and the hot drinks is in a cooler, but there’s a panini press available, should you prefer your tempeh banh mi warmed up.

The falafel can be had better elsewhere in town, but the kitchen does a nice job with sauces. That banh mi is dressed with a sriracha maple aioli (made with veganaise), and the lemon tahini sauce that comes with the falafel and tabouli is pretty delightful. The Buddha noodles (Thai peanut rice noodles with squash zoodles, cucumber, greens and a Szechuan chili oil) aren’t as good as they could be, partially because spiralized “noodles” are pretty much always disappointing, but the Plant Power sandwich (slices of roasted sweet potato, avocado, wonderful pickles, kale and black bean hummus on hearty multigrain bread) is really well crafted. Some of it is mushy, but there’s stuff that resists your teeth, as well, and the pickles counteract the vegetal sweetness of the other ingredients. There is a good hummus plate, too, with roasted garlic, sun-dried tomato and spinach varieties (in order of preference) alongside the black bean.

Eden’s Cafe does coffee and tea and has kombucha on tap, but there are also cold drinks in the cooler. Desserts, including a tofu-based chocolate silk pie (good filling, less good crust) and a nice turmeric-ginger cookie, and savory baked goods (some scones that could use a bit longer in the oven) are on the counter. Everyone is as pleasant as they can be. The prices may seem a little steeper than you’d wish, but many ingredients are locally sourced, and good vegetables ain’t cheap. The restaurant is open 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

This week’s wide release has not quite capbut this version seeds its own doubts. A tured the public’s anticipation like Joker, sad sack named Arthur Fleck (Joaquin despite some big names. Will Smith and Phoenix) works as a rent-a-clown in seedy younger CGI Will Smith headline Ang early-’80s Gotham. Arthur lives with his Lee’s new movie, a sci-fi action flick called ailing mother, Penny (Frances Conroy), Gemini Man. “Game of Thrones” co-creator who worked for the Waynes back in the day, David Benioff contributed the story and and watches Gotham’s version of Johnny co-wrote the screenplay about a hitman facing a younger clone of himself. My hopes lie more with Lee than Smith.

An animated version of The Addams Family looks like a nice family treat for the scary season. Hopefully, Bong Joon-Ho’s acclaimed new film, Parasite, will open here soon.

Ciné has a lot to offer with Official Secrets, Monos, Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool and Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins all hanging around through Thursday. Return of DA DA DA DA DA DA DA DA! BATMAN!!

Schlocktoberfest offers the 1977 Japanese film House from Oct. 10–12. Then, you can check Carson, Murray Franklin (Robert De out El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, Niro), nightly while dreams of performing recounting what happens to Aaron Paul’s stand-up routines whiz through his addled Jesse Pinkman following the series finale, mind. Eventually, a clown-faced Arthur on the big screen if you do not have Netflix. finds fame in his greatest joke: murder.

Flicker continues to dominate the month While the film eventually introduces with scary movies. Enjoy Scream 4, which audiences to Phoenix’s Joker, the film is was better than Scream 3 but not Scream or Scream 2, on Oct. 9. On Oct. 10, partake in Creepshow, the 1982 anthology from Stephen King and George A. Romero. The Children (1980) come out and play on Oct. 11. Visit Jigoku: Japanese Hell on Oct. 12. A Mahogany Triple Feature of sequels— Demons 2, Creepshow 2 and Return of the Living Dead 2—screens Oct. 14.

Telluride’s Mountainfilm Festival comes to the Morton Theatre on Oct. 10 with Mountainfilm on Tour. The ACC Library continues to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with two examples of why Guillermo del Toro is so awesome on Oct. 12. Pan’s Labyrinth and Pacific Rim may seem to have little in common, but both showcase del Toro’s varied charms as a filmmaker.

Other local libraries are offering more classic chills this month. The Oconee County Library’s Morning Matinee on Oct. 10 is the lesser Alfred Hitchcock classic Marnie, starring Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery, while the Oglethorpe County Library’s Seniors’ Morning Matinee on Oct. 14 is the Don Knotts classic (I guess) The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.

UGA’s Middle East Film Series continues on Oct. 9 with The Dupes, and Tate offers up Mean Girls as a throwback on Oct. 11, with the too-soon-forgotten political comedy Long Shot and one of the best films from the first half of 2019, John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum, on Oct. 11 and 13.

So, was Joker worth all the fuss?

about Arthur; be prepared to leave Gotham right when you are ready to move in. I would love to see this Joker interact with this Earth’s Batman, but this film is not a superhero movie. An Oscar nom—the second for someone portraying this particular comic book villain—would be justified as Phoenix successfully sells Arthur’s transition from awkward loner who maniacally laughs at the wrong times so often he carries a card explaining the act to be a symptom of his injured brain to violent spree killer whose final act could be an Andy Kaufman bit gone too far.

Such humanization ultimately demarcates the film’s appeal. Joker is—pardon the easy pun—unbalanced. We need no sympathy for this clown-faced devil, yet a movie constructed Joker around the birth of a villain inevitably seeks to explain and/or excuse brutality, especially considering that his heroic opposite number has yet to turn 10. Though Joker does not explicitly turn its villain into an antihero like last year’s Venom did, vigilante—a typical descriptor for Batman—gets thrown out there by the Gotham press.

When most of Arthur’s victims are worse examples of Gotham’s decay than he is, the argument is valid as well as nauseating.

Still, the Joker himself would find the punchline in The Hangover’s Todd Phillips releasing a comic book movie rooted more in the Scorsese-verse of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy than the DC Multiverse the week Scorsese disses the MCU as “theme parks” and “not cinema.” f

My Buddy Keeps Bailing ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

In fact, she’s usually the one who brings it up. But then, when the time comes, she always gives me an excuse not to. What should I do? What is the point of acting like you want to hang out if you don’t want to?

Sincerely, Confused in Colbert Dear Confused, My first impression is that this woman certainly likes you and counts you amongst her friends, but perhaps she’s a little bit chaotic when it comes to organizing her life.

I can be that way, for sure. I double-booked myself this week and only realized it last night, when I anxiously discussed business issues over an old fashioned at Flicker and then rushed my ass to a platonic date at Expat. (Go on dates with your friends, y’all.

It’s so much fun!)

I put everything in my phone calendar, which also syncs to my Google calendar, but somehow I just didn’t notice that I’d scheduled two events that deserved all of my attention within an hour and a half of each other. I had no excuse, so I just chalked it up to the game and dove straight into my overbooked evening.

Now, the difference between me and your friend is that I have a woefully guilty conscience, and I’ll run myself ragged before canceling an obligation. I commend her for being honest about scheduling conflicts and not over-exerting herself like I constantly do, but unfortunately, she’s now established herself as a flake in your eyes, and personally, I’d rather be judged as too busy instead of someone who makes empty promises. Not good.

There’s also the possibility that she’s not actually interested in hanging out with you at all, but keeps organizing hangouts out of some sort of polite obligation. Canceling

every time is pretty much the opposite of polite, though, so I doubt this is the case. She seems to like you and want to be friends outside of work, but this woman sounds like she’s just kind of messy and disorganized.

Instead of letting her choose the time and place, how about you offer something up next time? She might be less prone to cancellation when someone else sets the date. Do y’all work anywhere near downtown or other public spaces? Try meeting up for happy hour immediately after work, or if y’all work second shift, you could share an after-work drink or bar snack. If you’d rather go straight home after work, maybe try organizing a group outing with other co-workers, or invite your favorite partner along—I am done with assuming monogamy for the masses—and make it a double date. Perhaps the prospect of more people being there will be more appealing for her.

If you’re petty like me, you could also just refuse

her next hangout offer and tell her exactly why: “You keep canceling on me.”

That would create an opportunity to speak frankly about her flakiness, and perhaps she would greatly value some commiseration on her hectic schedule or inability to commit.

Truth be told, she’s probably fully aware of her flakiness, but I don’t think that undermines how much she likes you. I think her desire to spend time with you is sincere, but some people are just terrible at following through. Try scheduling a platonic date with her, or choose a can’t-miss event like a concert or a movie on opening night. I don’t see anything malicious in the person or actions you’ve described. I see a possibly overworked person who really wants to hang out with a new friend, but can’t find the time. f Need advice? A Quintessential Georgian LARRY WALKER COMES UP FROM THE GNAT LINE TO READ FROM HIS BOOK

By Pete McCommons pete@flagpole.com Late last spring, as I pulled into the Flagpole parking lot, I had one of those NPR moments. A mellifluous voice came on WUGA 91.7 FM, talking in the purest Georgia accent I have ever heard—not exactly patrician, certainly not Savannah, not mountain, not South Georgia—and I had to sit there until the interview was finished, to find out who this person was. It was an entertaining wait, because the man behind the voice was full of incisive and humorous stories.

He turned out to be Larry Walker, a name familiar to anybody who has kept an eye on the Georgia legislature over the years, a sort of legendary legislator who served 32 years in the House and was floor leader for several Democratic governors. In this interview, Walker was promoting his new book, Tales From Georgia’s Gnat Line, a collection of newspaper columns he had published in the Macon Telegraph.

May we assume that you are familiar with the gnat line, aka the fall line? It’s that geological edge of the Piedmont Plateau, running from Columbus to just below Macon to Augusta, where the terrain drops down and rivers run over shoals that make them unnavigable beyond that point. The fall line marks the farthest extension of the prehistoric ocean that covered half of Georgia (and may again). Below the line, the soil deposited by the sea waters is sandy. Gnats need sandy soil to complete their hellish lifecycle. Hence the gnat line.

Below it, people move in swarms of gnats; above it, gno gnats!

Larry Walker lives in Perry, in Houston (Hows-ton) County, just below Macon on I-75. Perry sits right on the gnat line, so I guess their comfort depends on which

way the wind is blowing. Walker is an attorney and has been for 50 years. He is a fourth-generation Perryean with a wonderful wife, Janice, four children and 10 grandchildren. He is, as he says in one of his columns, right where he wants to be. He was a leader in Atlanta and could have practiced law there. He has traveled and read widely and likes all kinds of music, especially the hymns he has heard all his life in the Methodist church. He hunts quail and fishes and always puts family and friends first. His paternal grandparents lived on an old farm in Washington County, where he visited in summers and saw them plow the land with mules, kill hogs, chop wood, build rabbit boxes and live a largely 19th Century life—a molding experience for a town boy like Walker. And Perry sounds like the ideal Georgia town for a boy to grow up.

All this background is to try to tell you what an entertaining evening we have in store this Friday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m., when Larry Walker himself reads from and signs copies of his book at the firehall on Prince Avenue, under the auspices of Avid Bookshop.

Tales From Georgia’s Gnat Line makes you feel like you’re sitting on the porch talking with Larry about life and the interesting people who inhabit it. Since it is a collection of newspaper columns, you can dip into it for a quick pick-me-up of wit and candor, or you can read it straight through. Either way, you come to know a quintessential Georgian, the kind of person we’d all like to be, if we had paid better attention in school or worked harder and saved a little more.

Larry worked his way through UGA and law school, married his high school sweetheart, Janice, and went back to Perry to start practicing law and raise their family.

He’s still at it, still where he wants to be and always eager to meet new people and hear their stories.

Dink NeSmith, local writer and newspaper magnate, who is an old friend of Larry’s and served on the Board of Regents with him, will introduce his friend and perhaps think to mention his own book, a just-published memoir of his growing up in Jesup, in his father’s funeral home, titled The Last Man to Let You Down.

Friday evening should be a great occasion in the firehall. I can’t wait to see Larry and hear him read in that sonorous Middle Georgia accent enriched by all that he has seen. I hope you will join us and see for yourself this man who has accomplished so much just by being lovingly immersed in the life around him. Seeing him in person will be the perfect preparation for reading Tales From Georgia’s Gnat Line. f
