UGA Is Improving Its Diversity I have been thinking a great deal about the racial issues that have been on the radar screen of UGA and the Athens community lately. As a longtime UGA African-American faculty member, please allow me the privilege of sharing my thoughts.

As a 68-year-old descendant of slaves, it is inevitable that I gained a perspective that others without that background may not have. I have been blessed to have lived in some of the most defining periods in our history. I have marched, advocated and supported virtually all of them since I was a child at the 1963 March on Washington.

Diversity and inclusion (D&I) is my area of expertise, and that informs how I view where UGA stands regarding D&I issues.

Much work remains to be done, but in my 31 years at UGA I have seen a lot of changes. Despite the idea that the diversity numbers have not changed, UGA’s recruitment and retention efforts have been admirable and have resulted in many more diverse students attending, and in them feeling better while here. It has been my mission to do what I came to do at UGA in helping to move UGA forward with these issues. We are not standing still.

I can remember when there were no Hispanic names on my class roll sheets and very few Southeast Asians. I now have both each semester. I have spoken with countless black students who feel comfortable here and know we are working on making it even better. We have a diversity certificate program offered to the university community free of charge that has gone from just a few graduates to entire departments earning certificates.

Painting President Morehead as the bad guy in a dance that began long before his tenure and had been in place hundreds of years before he took over is simply uncalled for, unfair and not helpful, especially when little to no credit is given for what he has managed to do so far, including a 20% increase in the low wages and increases in so much in the D&I area.

I think we all need to just take a breath, step back and put things in perspective.

Rather than piling on, we need to take a breather. Without commenting on the specifics of any of these issues, all of which deserve a balanced, reasoned airing, I would hope that everyone involved with or interested in these issues would do two things: Keep pushing for societal change because so much remains to be done, and be strategic and intentional in how you go about that push for change.

Primarily, recognize that President Morehead is not the enemy. He is a resource and partner in the change we all seek. We are mutually dependent. That is simply a fact. We can accomplish far more together than we can by fighting what is only a perceived enemy. Reaching solutions we can live with will take time, effort, honest communication and trust on both sides.

If I did not believe every word I am saying, not only would I not say it, but I would not be here. I could have retired long ago.

But if I had retired, I would have missed engaging in the dramatically increased

efforts I came to UGA to strive for in the first place.

President Morehead does not need me to defend him, and that is not the intent of this letter. He has no idea I am writing this.

I am writing because I see how much progress has been made. It is impossible for me to stand silently by and watch as it is minimized, mischaracterized and ignored.

Let’s celebrate the progress made and keep pushing for more but do it from a place of mutual respect, love and trust.

Sound ridiculous? Stupid? Naïve? I didn’t get to be a nearly 70-year-old award-winning, accomplished educator being any of those things. Don’t be afraid to try it. What do we have to lose?

Means Lists CCSD Accomplishments The past two years have been a time of change and growth in the Clarke County School District. Our students have shown progress in almost every area of academic study. Working with a group of community members and district leaders, we created a two-year strategic plan that has guided our work over the past year. Every part of our work, from the way we clean our buildings to how we implement instruction, is aligned with our strategic priorities of academic growth, social-emotional growth, organizational effectiveness, fiscal health, professional capacity and educational equity.

Because we took the time to lay the groundwork and establish these systems, change has started to show. Academic achievement has increased slightly, as evidenced by our indicators of College and Career Success and Georgia Milestones data, which we will be able to share later this summer. Our students demonstrate tremendous social-emotional capacity, and our work toward equity, while challenging, moves forward. Through the implementation of AVID, our students are learning the tools that will help them be college and career ready, with the use of collaborative and inquiry-based instructional strategies from educators who have recently received high-quality training and preparation.

For the second consecutive year, we worked with the Board of Education to pass a balanced budget. The district is appreciative of the unwavering financial support of the Athens-Clarke County community, which has allowed us to support our students while completing many improvement projects. These include the construction of the new Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary School and the soon-to-be-reopened Hilsman Middle School.

As we look to the future, six of our schools have just begun their work with the University of Virginia Partnership for Leaders in Education in their school transformation efforts. We will continue our improvement of district facilities through the development of Old Gaines. The opening of the school-based health clinic at Hilsman Middle School will meet an urgent need for access to health care for our most vulnerable students. It will also usher in a new age of community schools in our city.

Most importantly, we are excited about the future of the West Broad property and how we can advance our vision of expanding high-quality early childhood education opportunities for children and families through a new use of the property.

Our work is driven by a moral purpose.

As Fullan stated, “Moral purpose focuses on raising the bar and closing the gap for all children…” (2010). Noted equity scholar H. Richard Milner (2017) declared, “…

Our educational system requires a much broader, more holistic approach for educational change that is transformative and sustainable.” We are engaging in morally driven change that is substantially proportionate to the historic marginalization that many of our children and their families have faced in Athens-Clarke and beyond.

The Clarke County School District is fortunate to have educators and dedicated supporters who all want what is best for our children. I look forward to working with our Board of Education and members of the Athens community to accomplish our common goal: helping all children succeed.

Sanford Stadium Needs Handrails Thanks to Greg McGarity for the wonderful job he is doing and has done as athletic director of our great University of Georgia. I am a proud retiree of our institution who saw many improvements to our beautiful campus over my 30 years of employment, many of which were vast changes and improvements to Sanford Stadium. I am also a UGA football season ticket holder of 35 years, and a Gymdog season ticket holder as well.

I am writing to suggest a much-needed improvement to our lower level steps in Sanford Stadium. While attending football games, I have witnessed countless instances of senior adults losing their balance and/or falling or nearly falling because there are no handrails on sides of steps or down the center of the steps. Handrails are so important to those who may have a balance problem, orthopedic problems or age-related limits to function due to age.

As our longevity increases, aging athletic fans still desire to be a part of home football games, but struggle at times to go up and down steps due to lack of any handrails. Many of those same seniors have long supported UGA football through the times when the Bulldogs have dropped out of the top 25, as well as being a winning, top-five team.

Please thoughtfully consider my request for placing some supports down aisles of lower level seats or even placed at intervals down the aisles of Sanford Stadium. Help those who want to continue to support the Athletic Association.

GOP Goes After Health Care, Again Once again, the GOP is out to exclude millions from health-care coverage. Its leader, through federal court, is seeking to invalidate the entire Affordable Care Act, removing protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions and eliminating crucial protections for 156 million

Americans who get insurance through employers.

Remember, the ACA requires private insurers to sell coverage at the same price to those with pre-existing conditions as to those without pre-existing conditions, making coverage affordable for those folks.

Women are not charged more for coverage because of their child-bearing abilities. It also allows parents to continue coverage for children up to age 26.

The GOP and its leader will stop at nothing to achieve in court what it could not achieve in Congress. They don’t care how many people are hurt if the ACA is undone.

And what do they propose as replacement?

Zip! After 10 years, conservatives still have no better plan.

If you think the Republican Party isn’t eyeing Medicare, think again. Its leader’s budget proposal includes a $850 billion cut to Medicare, which basically equals the tax cut given to the richest people of our nation. We shouldn’t be surprised.

Republican politicians have been at war with the safety net that Medicare provides our elderly since its inception in 1966.

Democrats are already mounting a fullthroated defense of the ACA, and will continue their never-ending battle to protect Medicare for senior citizens. Democrats believe you are not free if you have cancer and no health insurance. You could die. You are not free if you have to sell your home to pay to keep a family member alive. When health insurance plans deny you care when you need it, they deny you independence.

State Should Track Animals Killed at Shelters “Pet guardians are fooling themselves if they think the animal they turn in to a shelter is likely to find a new home. [In the Atlanta area] fully two-thirds of pets impounded in area shelters are killed,” according to Georgia SPOT (Stopping Pet Overpopulation Together).

Some people like to use the term “euthanasia” for terminating the life of an unwanted former pet. I don’t. I call it what it is: killing an abandoned or lost pet.

Some counties are “no kill,” with adoptions as their focus. This is humane, and very costly for counties with limited budgets. Therefore, most Georgia counties have a policy that, after a certain period of time, animals will be killed and cremated.

Unfortunately, most likely by design, no state agency keeps up with the number of pets killed in Georgia by county-run animal control departments (as opposed to Humane Society shelters, which do not have a “kill’’ policy) each year. Instead, because the public outrage would be significant if the numbers were compiled and released statewide, each county supposedly keeps this data.

However, based on my experience as a county commissioner in a rural Georgia county near Athens, the accuracy of these numbers is questionable. At least one head of our animal control center just told us what we wanted to hear, not the facts.

But county commissioners are also at fault. Centers are often understaffed. Three of our five commissioners refused to adequately staff our center. All said they were animal lovers, but that the county could not afford the expense, and “volunteers” should

help out. So, the animals were left on their own a significant part of the time, especially on weekends. After all, the animals couldn’t write a letter of complaint.

Theoretically, the Georgia Department of Agriculture regulates these shelters. But rather than keeping up with the number of cats and dogs killed, the department has a listing of slots in centers by county. Simple to compile and administer—and purposefully meaningless.

So, what should be done about this deplorable situation? For starters, our new governor should appoint a committee made up of prominent citizens, including politicians on both sides of the aisle, to recommend specific ways to reduce the deplorable killing of our dogs and cats.

Possible remedies would include state funding for animal shelters; greater regulation by GDOA in general; mandated reports to GDOA regarding the number of animals in each shelter and the number put down annually; identifying shelter best practices, including mandates such as shelters must be manned at all times; and state laws regarding neutering/spaying.

If you care about animals—and most Georgians do—check out how your county handles animal control. And push your state representative and senator to push the creation of the above committee.

Kudzu Prevents Climate Change Few realize it, but we have turned a significant corner. Carbon dioxide levels, closely related to global warming and general environmental degradation, have peaked for the year.

The explosive recovery of kudzu from its winter siesta finally started gobbling up more CO2 through photosynthesis than is being spewed out by cars and lawn mowers.

Every year, it takes until the end of May for this to happen.

For those who like to take the pulse of the environment in the easiest and cheapest way possible, nothing beats just keeping track of CO2. Stations atop the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii continually monitor air composition far from the L.A. freeways or coal-powered power plants. More data than anyone could possibly want is available by Googling “Mauna Loa CO2” and checking the ESPL site. At first, you wonder why there is such a consistent swing between low summer and high winter values, but then it becomes obvious. In much of the Northern Hemisphere, where most of the land is on Earth, photosynthesis slows down or completely stops in the winter.

Plants are sucking up less CO2 exactly when more fossil fuels are burned for heating, generating even more CO2.

If it were not for kudzu, we’d be in worse shape than we are. The amount of CO2 is not just escalating. It’s increasing at an astonishing rate. That is a problem.

If there is a solution, it is for everyone to do their part. Celebrate kudzu. An obvious solution is to dig up all those plants with skinny leaves like roses and azaleas, and plant more CO2-busting kudzu. Aside from recognizing its traditional value in shade arbors and as an alternative to grape leaves in Middle Eastern wraps, we should celebrate the nobility of kudzu, and cease to denigrate it merely as an invasive species.

Galis Is Wrong on Abortion Leon Galis thinks it inconceivable that the Supreme Court would approve Georgia legislators’ pronouncement that “Modern medical science… demonstrates that unborn children are a class of living, distinct persons…” (“When is a Person a Person?” June 5). He’s right, though not in the sense that he supposes. Galis quotes from a preamble to the bill that changed the law, but the language quoted is confined to the bill itself. It does not modify any part of the Georgia code and forms no part of the operative law that the Supreme Court would review. If the Court examines the law, it will consider medical science, but will not likely concern itself with legislators’ opinions about what medicine does or does not prove. It will focus instead on the actual restrictions that the law imposes to determine whether the ability to obtain an abortion is unduly constrained.

Galis thinks the question of fetal personhood would figure prominently in the court’s deliberations. He notes that no Supreme Court case identifies prenatal humans as legal persons and seems to conclude that, lacking explicit precedent, the court could never find that a fetus embodies personhood. At the same time, however, he refers to the law’s evolving notion of persons. He acknowledges that the category of humans endowed with legal personhood has expanded over time (e.g., formerly, enslaved humans were not legal persons), with each expansion constituting a departure from legal history and precedent.

Where no direct precedent exists, legal principles often develop through the use of imprecise analogies. Prior to Roe v. Wade, there was no precedent for a right to abortion. In announcing the right, the court extracted principles from dissimilar cases, including those involving contraception, interracial marriage, wiretapping, etc., to expand on the law’s concept of privacy rights. The court’s notions of personhood could expand to include fetuses. The personhood evolution that Galis discusses, then, might one day embrace the unborn.

But the biggest problem with Galis’ argument is his assumption that the court’s decision—and the fate of the laws it reviews—would hinge on its views of fetal personhood in the first place. Galis correctly observes that the case for abortion rights “collapses if fetuses are persons.” It does not follow, however, that states can ban abortion only if the court finds that fetuses are persons. Citing animal cruelty laws, Galis notes that states afford legal protection to non-humans. Similarly, the court could permit states to protect prenatal humans, regardless of their status as legal persons. There are grounds other than “personhood” on which the court could uphold protections for the unborn.

In fact, the court has already identified and applied at least one of those grounds.

Roe accorded states greater latitude to interfere with a woman’s ability to obtain an abortion as gestation progressed. The court did not extend that authority based on fetal personhood, but on the states’ interest in protecting “the potentiality of human life.”

The promise of human life in unborn children remains a compelling justification for state regulation, sufficient to uphold abortion restrictions unless the court affirms a countervailing right to abortion.

A parade of citizens debated the when the commission added an $88 million issue before the Athens-Clarke County “space modernization” project involving Commission voted 9–1 on a final list of SPLOST projects that includes the arena.

In lieu of spending $34 million on the arena—a much reduced price tag, thanks to slightly shrinking the project and soliciting private investment—commissioners Melissa Link and Mariah Parker proposed setting aside the money in the more vague category of downtown economic development to allow for further discussion. “I have serious issues with the lack of transparency and the fact that this project has been given multiple bites at the apple, one of which was a closed-door meeting,” Link said at a July 16 agenda-setting meeting.

That closed-door meeting was an executive session to discuss a real-estate transaction, Commissioner Jerry NeSmith clarified.

The arena has been under discussion for 30 years in various forms ranging from an amphitheater to the current proposal, former mayor and Classic Center Authority member Gwen O’Looney told commissioners two days later.

Others, such as Tony Sanchez, said the hospitality industry can be a stepping stone for people with barriers to employment. Sanchez told the commission that he got a job as a dishwasher at the Classic Center after kicking drugs and getting out of prison 18 years ago, worked his way to event manager and bought his first house.

Music promoter Knowa Johnson said his mother and mother-in-law, a Jamaican immigrant, were able to buy property and retire thanks to working in hospitality, and his daughter is supporting her child by working in the field.

“I know the economic impact on a city when you put some focus on the entertainment and tourism industry,” the Orlando, FL, native said.

While the arena has drawn the most attention lately, it’s far from the only project on the $300-plus million SPLOST list. It also includes funding for affordable housing, green space, park renovations, renewable energy, an Eastside library, a mobile health clinic, an addiction treatment center, wireless internet service, transportation improvements and public safety, among other projects.

But Link predicted that the arena will kill the sales tax extension at the ballot box in November. “I’ve gotten messages from multiple, multiple constituents who will not vote for SPLOST if this is on the list,” she said. Activist Irami Osei-Frimpong told the commission he would organize a campaign to defeat SPLOST if the arena was included.

On the other hand, “I’ve heard from my constituents who are very excited about the Classic Center… that love the idea, think it’s great,” said Commissioner Russell Edwards.

“I think this is a good, transformation[al] SPLOST that is going to do a lot of good for this community,” Hamby added.

BOE Extends Means’ Contract The majority of a divided Clarke County Board of Education gave Superintendent Demond Means a vote of confidence last week by extending his three-year contract through the 2021–22 school year. The

then opted to extend the SPLOST and add another $45 million.

Commissioner Mike Hamby noted that the Blue Heron/River District project— killed in 2012 after a developer bought a key piece of property that later became luxury student housing—included a 6,000seat amphitheater, as does the downtown master plan. “There’s a lot of similarities there,” he said.

The arena development will also include a hotel, senior living facility and office building. Link said her vision is “a neighborhood where someone like Pink Morton [who built the Morton Theatre] could buy a small lot and build a building for his own tastes and purposes, and that building could change over time and continue to tell the story of this community.”

Commissioner Tim Denson had been one of the arena’s defenders, but he switched gears and supported Parker and Link’s motion.

After it failed, Link was the lone holdout against the SPLOST list as a whole. Denson also pushed through a motion that will require child care and elder care facilities at the arena and the new judicial center.

Before the vote, Classic Center Technical Director Mark Woods told the commission that the 5,500-seat arena will put Athens “in the big leagues,” with the ability to host national acts that currently don’t have a venue large enough. According to an economic impact study, the arena will create 600 jobs and generate millions in revenue for the county, the school district and downtown businesses.

The Classic Center has agreed to pay arena workers at least $12.50 an hour, pegged to inflation through MIT’s living wage calculator.

That was not enough for some critics.

“Everybody is working,” said commission candidate Andrea Farnham, noting that Athens has a 4% unemployment rate. “We don’t need more low-wage jobs.” Labor organizer Joseph Carter said the arena

extension, while routine, was a win for Means and his supporters, especially those in the black community, who have come to view debate over the effectiveness of his two-year tenure as racially motivated.

“There’s a lot of racial tension inside the board and in the community,” board member Tawana Mattox said. “We have to stop this.”

Board President LaKeisha Gantt agreed.

“It’s not something we can’t work through,” she told Flagpole. “But it’s also a microcosm of our community. We don’t know how to talk about race. We don’t know how to talk about biases.”

The audience of about 150, which appeared to be mostly black and mostly in support of Means, had dwindled to about 75 by the time the board re-emerged from a 90-minute closed session. Some audience members jeered Mattox and two board members, Greg Davis and John Knox, who asked to postpone the vote, and applauded when Means’ contract extension was approved by a 6–2 vote. Knox was also the lone vote against Means’ last contract extension.

Davis wanted to push back the vote because an ethics complaint against Means is still outstanding, and Knox added that much of the student achievement data the board is supposed to use to evaluate the superintendent had not been reported yet.

“I’m a scientist, and I don’t have the data to make this decision,” said Knox, a geography professor at UGA. While some parents wondered why the BOE would renew Means’ contract again after just extending it in December, the district’s attorney, Michael Pruitt, explained that the board is supposed to vote on a contract extension each July, and that the December vote was supposed to have happened the previous July. “We have to work a little bit harder at tightening up our processes,” Gantt told Flagpole.

Although the two items were technically unrelated, the contract extension got tangled up in an ethics complaint filed against Means in May, which was also on the BOE’s July 18 agenda. Means is accused of plagiarizing a portion of an email to staff, accepting gifts from a vendor by working

on the side for CCSD consultant AVID and misleading the board about his dissertation, in violation of state ethical standards. The Professional Standards Commission, which certifies teachers, referred the complaint— filed by a Newnan lawyer on behalf of anonymous clients in Athens—to the BOE. After Pruitt outlined the charges, the board voted 7–1 to ask the PSC for clarification on what it’s supposed to do, with Linda Davis in opposition.

Pruitt said it is unusual for the PSC to refer a complaint to the local district to investigate. “It could be perceived this is coming from some local political turmoil,” he said.

The board also unanimously voted to approve a contract to potentially buy property for a new district headquarters. The contract gives the board an option to purchase the property for $6.7 million after a 90-day due diligence period.

Means would not reveal the location of the property. “The seller is very sensitive to having their property exposed to the public,” he said. But he told Flagpole that the property is not the Georgia Power building on Prince Avenue. CCSD is still in talks to buy that building, Means said, and both properties “are in play.”

Central-office administrators have been split between the Whitehead Road Elementary School annex and the H.T. Edwards building since 2016, when CCSD sold its Mitchell Bridge Road office to Advantage Behavioral Health Systems with the intention of eventually moving into a renovated Old West Broad School. However, Means scrapped that plan in favor of early learning classrooms after determining that the building isn’t big enough, and the Athens Land Trust has also proposed to lease the property.

In addition, the board approved a lease for 1039 Baxter St. to house CCSD’s alternative high school. The district is bringing alternative education in-house after using contractors to run the program for years.

“We think this is a better model,” Means said. An Eastside location will be consolidated into the Baxter Street space. Middleschool students in the alternative program will continue to attend their school. f

By Dan Jackson news@flagpole.com If you like to shop at farmers markets, drive an electric car, fret about climate change and want to experience a heightened sense of community, you owe it to yourself to visit Serenbe, a community only 30 miles south of Atlanta but light years from its congestion and stress.

Serenbe provides a model of sustainability in a sea of suburban real estate development. Organic farm? Check. Stormwater management? Check. Efficiently designed homes linked to geothermal systems in New Urban neighborhoods? Check.

Commitment to the arts, including an artist-in-residence program and an on-site professional theater company that performs solely in gorgeous outdoor settings? Check, check, check.

Founded by Atlanta restaurateur Steve Nygren (Mick’s, Pleasant Peasant) almost by accident when he and his three daughters decided one day to go to the country to hang out with farm animals at an open house, Serenbe provides rare insights into the way a community can provide a nearideal setting for people seeking a better life.

That fateful day in the early 1990s, Nygren says, he was so impressed by the joy he saw in his girls’ eyes that he bought the place on the spot with the intention of using it as an occasional weekend house, little knowing that his days as a restaurateur were coming to a close and a new chapter as a visionary community builder was soon to open for him.

Visitors came and went—and sometimes stayed for months—and Nygren, ever the entrepreneur and sniffing an opportunity, began setting up some outbuildings to accommodate a bed and breakfast. When a neighbor decided to clear-cut part of his property, Nygren went into community organizer mode and in time, over numerous dinners, persuaded the owners of 40,000 nearby acres to agree to a radical land-use plan to deter suburban sprawl by limiting house development to 30% of the land, leaving the remaining 70% for natural woodlands and fields.

Meanwhile, Nygren plunged into the literature of alternative development, wellness and community building, and explored the ways people interact with their environment. He read an Urban Land Institute study that found that 90% of people who live on golf courses play the game only twice a year, paying the premium simply to enjoy open green spaces. golf,” reflecting the evolving role of picturesque farms in marketing residential real estate.

There are now 400 homes that have been built since 2004, with 700 residents ranging in age from small children who may attend the on-site Montessori school to seniors who volunteer with the Community Care Network, a group that supports individuals who need help. The Serenbe lifestyle comes at a cost, though—home prices range from the mid-six figures to over $1 million.

The community is laid out on winding streets that trace the path of nearby streams in a series of small “hamlets,” or neighborhoods, with a bookstore, wine shop, general store and other useful amenities within walking or biking distance.

Home design ranges in style from modernist to Craftsman and farmhouse vernacular. Many of the homes in a new hamlet called Mado (“Life in balance” in Creek) were inspired

by Nygren’s recent visit to Scandinavia.

The untamed natural world is always close at hand, feeding the “biophilia” that guides the property’s design philosophy. And don’t look for well-manicured lawns: Many of the gardens and landscapes were designed by the late gardener Ryan Gainey and reflect his exuberant, naturalistic style.

Day trippers have lots of options for overnight or longer stays. The 27-room Inn at Serenbe, once the original farmhouse and the Nygrens’ first home on the property, offers plenty of pampering. The inn also rents out homes in the community for large groups, and is popular for weddings.

Visitors have access to many of the community’s amenities, including a pool, spa, gym, bike or golf cart rental and even the meditation labyrinth. There are five restaurants on site, including a sushi bar, a casual bakery/ café and two fine dining restaurants, one located at the inn.

Through Aug. 18, the Serenbe Playhouse is running a superbly tuneful, energetic production of Hair, the ’60s rock musical, at an outdoor stage in a big meadow on the property. The bar for refreshments is a Merry Pranksters-style bus painted in the psychedelic colors of the day.

Closer to home, the success of Serenbe might prompt the residents of Shoal Creek Farms who are trying to block Diamond Hill Farm from continuing to grow organic vegetables on their land to ask themselves: Are they perhaps missing out on the benefits of the growing “agrihood” trend exemplified

In stark visual and conceptual contrast to the aforementioned exhibitions, “Color, Form and Light” focuses on artwork’s most basic elements. Drawn from the museum’s permanent collection and other rarely seen pieces on long-term loan, the exhibition reflects a range of overlapping artistic movements dating from the 1960s to the present, such as abstract expressionism and minimalism.

Appearing on the cover of Flagpole this week, De Wain Valentine’s monolithic sculpture “Double Concave Circle, Deep Red” stands alone within its own gallery space, commanding attention to its slick surface that playfully reflects and distorts its setting. Often associated with the Light and Space movement that arose in Southern California in the 1960s, Valentine was a pioneer of using industrial plastic and polyester resin to create translucent sculptures of minimalistic geometric shapes and vivid colors.

Victor Vasarely and his son, Yvaral, both experimented with illusion and perception through optical art, and their pieces can be found at the museum side by side. Nicknamed the “Grandfather of Op Art,” Vasarely has a screen print, “Tau-Ceti,” that appears to shift as one’s head moves forward and backward. His son’s sculpture, “Instability Number 18,” uses black and white patterns on vinyl cords to create the illusion of a three-dimensional pyramid as one’s body moves from side to side.

Fletcher Benton’s motorized “Synchronetic R-1000 (Rolling Discs)” is a wonderful example of kinetic art.

As brightly colored translucent plexiglass discs slide from side to side, they produce new shapes and colors as they overlap and pass each other. Additional highlights in the exhibition include color field silkscreens by Jules Olitski and light sculptures

Sigh in July

How a Summer Residency Grew Into a Full-Blown Festival

In

2015, local band Universal Sigh could be caught every Tuesday night at Georgia Theatre entrancing audiences with its self-proclaimed genre of “metamorphic rock.” The residency, dubbed Sigh in July, featured one touring band on the bill with Universal Sigh each week.

The shows provided a light-bulb moment for the quartet as it sought to combine the world of jam bands, psychedelic rock, funk and folk in Athens.

A year later, the Sigh in July festival was born, and it has continued to grow each year since. Rather than four separate nights over the course of the month, the group hosts a two-day event featuring local and national music acts and an artist market. This year, Sigh in July runs July 26–27 at Live Wire Athens, with a stacked lineup that includes Funk You, EarthCry, Voodoo Visionary, The Orange Constant, Three Star Revival and more.

“The residency [at Georgia Theatre] was us trying to figure out how to make playing in a college town over the summer special,” says Pace Maynard, Universal Sigh’s guitarist and backup vocalist. “We were really nervous to do a two-day event in 2016, but it seems like we’ve filled a niche that we didn’t even realize was there.”

As opposed to the sprawl of AthFest or other annual events, Maynard says Sigh in July offers a more intimate experience in that Live Wire’s capacity maxes out around 300 people.

“We’re just trying to showcase a side of the music scene in Athens and Atlanta that is underrepresented in many established festivals,” Maynard says. “And the green room at Live Wire is very small, so attendees are more likely to run into a lot of the artists—you don’t get that at a lot of events.”

Maynard says the festival’s attendance has increased organically each year. “During our residency in 2015, we had between 70–100 people each night,” he says. “The first year of the festival, in 2016, I’d say we had 150–200. Last year, we had 300 people each day. ” Until recently, funding for Sigh in July came solely from Live Wire and the Robertson family, who co-own the venue.

This year, sponsors include SweetWater and Jack Daniels, and a portion of proceeds will benefit AthFest Educates.

The event also features an artist market with several local vendors. The market focuses mainly on tie dye, herbal products and products in the holistic healing field. “This is the first year that people I did not personally know have reached out and expressed an interest in being part of the festival,” says Julie Hutchins, Sigh in July’s artist coordinator and a local yoga instructor.

Given that a new cycle begins in Athens every July and August, when a fresh wave of UGA students flood the city, Hutchins says Sigh in July is a time for newcomers to find their place during a time of transition. “Sigh in July is a special time where you can network and make new friends and set intentions and dream as big as you want to dream,” she says.

And Maynard says, after living in Athens for more than 10 years, the music scene is as strong as he’s seen, citing groups like Cicada Rhythm, The Orange Constant, Partials and Misnomer, who he says maintain a high musical standard. He believes Athens is still a great place for up-and-coming bands.

“As long as there is affordable housing here, there will be a thriving arts community,” Maynard says. “If you’re trying to play [music] professionally, Athens is a great incubator, because your rent is cheap, and you can try out all your new material on a hometown audience.”

In addition to planning the festival, Universal Sigh— rounded out by guitarist and keyboardist Steve Terry, bassist and vocalist Austin Parker and drummer Jones Maynard—is in the midst of recording a sophomore fulllength album. While Maynard says the record will hold tight to the weirdness of 2016’s Atoms & Void, it will also see the group diving head-first into more poppy sensibilities.

“The biggest difference is that Tomas Uribe is producing this one and has given us the confidence we needed to shift our focus from writing and performing to recording,” Maynard says. “We actually recorded more material than we can fit on an album, so there will likely be some additional singles or an EP coming out in the future—but we haven’t planned that bit out yet.” f

I

owe my musical attention span to the Grateful Dead. I tuned in at around 15 years old, my mother tolerating my burned CD-Rs in the minivan to and from school.

The Dead primed my malleable young brain for other long-form, improvisational and experimental music I wouldn’t encounter until my 20s. From krautrockers Faust to free-jazz originator Ornette Coleman or stoner-rock megaliths Sleep, to Ravi Shankar’s meditative ragas, to the patience to crate-dig, the Dead warmed me up for things I’d love later on.

Most importantly, being a Deadhead taught me the joy of sharing music, and experiencing it communally. We share live tapes, stickers, set lists, tents, tailgates, anecdotes and urban legends.

Folks often associate Deadheads with stereotypes—see the dichotomy of the Co. Bros/Old Dusty meme—and at the Dead and Company Garcia Peoples show in Atlanta on June 29, I saw a little tension between fans old and young.

By many metrics, the Grateful Dead is America’s biggest band. When a movement is that big, you have a lot of every kind of fan. Old hippies, frat bros, artists, doctors, pushers, shovers, conscientious lovers, givers, takers—you name it. But the kind that disappoints me is: the Gatekeeper.

The Gatekeeper asks about your favorite show as a test, not to relate, and shuts you down with, “Are you even old enough to have seen a Jerry show or to know who this is?” If you don’t share their stance on Donna or studio albums, you aren’t a real head. The Gatekeeper can’t stand young or casual fans.

It’s all very self-serious and antithetical to the themes of playfulness, mischief and ego death that surround the Dead. What I’ve taken away from every documentary and article is that Jerry despised seriousness. It seems very funny for me in a scene created by weirdos, for weirdos, to be competitive or exclusionary about the right way to enjoy it.

I understand that when something is precious to you it’s just that—precious. But unless you were on the scene since 1965, we are all playing catch-up and educating ourselves in some way. Isn’t it exciting when

there is always more to know? Another show you haven’t heard? Something left to experience?

I know it would be crazy to get all peaceand-love over the Grateful Dead, but I’m excited for new fans and hold so much respect for heads before me who share their encyclopedic knowledge.

In that spirit of sharing, here’s some current music you may dig if you dig the Dead: the not-so-subtly named Garcia Peoples, the “Touch of Grey”-like opening of Los Colognes’ “Working Together,” the melting melodies of Kikagaku Moyo—whose lyrics are heavily filled with nonsensical scat, reflecting the Dead’s fun and mischief, since listeners often assume every song is in Japanese—the Skiffle Players’ laid-back “Friend of the Devil”-esque ditties, and more.

WORD, YOU HEARD?: So far, this has kinda undeniably been the summer of Athens rapper Kxng Blanco. He’s been super visible, recognized by his peers and showcased just about everywhere. So, it’s totally appropriate that he’s got a brand-spankin’new album out named Skee Yee!. It’s a tight collection featuring only 10 tracks. Nothing here at all mimics the 100th-generation trap that’s polluting everything these days. And even when it veers slightly in that direction (“Woah!”), it’s got strength of composition and heft of delivery that most Fruity Loops users can only dream of. Indeed, this is refreshingly enthusiastic and wrapped in personality. The best tracks by far are the ones that lean in a little harder and eschew vocal effects (“Spazz!”, “Soul Food”). Of course, not everything here is great, and even this Kxng Blanco short record could have been trimmed by a few songs. That said, spin this loudly while summer still shines, because that’s what it was made for. Find it on every major streaming service.

KING OF CABBAGE FLOWERS: Back in 2015, based wizard Cabbage Looper released a mix named Pop Slop. Now, almost three years to the day later, Cabbage Looper (along with Sleepy Company) has released Pop Slop Vol. 2. Have you ever watched any of those hours-long Boiler Room sets where someone is spinning records during a sunny afternoon and people filter in and out of the house? This is what’s that’s like. There are no club bangers or fist-pumping anthems.

There’s just good ol’ slow ’n’ low hip-hop-influenced instrumentals (“Flys Forever”), some early-’80s MIDI sounds (“Super Bandits in the Night”) and full-on cold groove (“Full Sail”). The only tracks that really kill the mood of this release are the wildly out-of-place “Resurfacing Leviathan” and “Co-Dependence Beach,” neither of which contribute in any worthwhile way.

But hell, it’s not like you’re forced to listen to this on cassette tape. Just skip ‘em! Start skipping at echobassrecords.bandcamp. com.

EVERYBODY GET TOGETHER: The annual Macon music festival and club crawl Bragg Jam happens Friday and Saturday, July 26–27. Created and maintained in loving memory for Macon native sons, brothers and musicians Brax and Tate Bragg, this year’s festival marks the 20th anniversary of their passing in an auto accident. Notable for selective and tasteful bookings across

pretty much every genre, Bragg Jam has long hosted Athens groups. This year is no different—featured Athens acts include of Montreal, The Orange Constant, Bloodkin and Drew Beskin. TO THE TOOTH: New local hip-hop-ish band Aldente—which deserves legit thumbs-up for that goofball name—just released its self-titled album. The great thing about this is it’s mostly live, as far as I can tell, with actual analog drums, even. I admit I’m a total sucker for Go Team-style beats, and opening track “Glue Stick” has them in spades. The whole record is kinda funky and mostly fun, although I can hear how it would get old after awhile. I was forewarned that “Swisher Sweetie” was “Bootsy Collinsesque,” and to be fair, the guitars definitely have a slight P-Funk flavor, but if you’re gonna name drop Bootsy, you’re gonna need to bring that bass. I dunno. I’m on the fence with this, but, you know, good fences make good neighbors. Find it on Spotify.

DEMON DAYS: Athens noise project Wuornos released two things this month. First, the single-track “Species Being,” and second, the five-track EP Ambient Softbois Die. Wuornos is self-described as being composed of “rot, dust, dirt, grime and sweet berry wine,” and I won’t disagree. These tracks are grievously disturbing—the stuff of nightmares. Unlike so many other noise-based projects, this stuff never recedes—even grudgingly—into any sort of anticipatory rhythm or sense of place. It grinds and yelps. It’s claustrophobic and deeply unsettling. All of which is to say, I think it made its point. Georgia Theatre · 8 p.m. · $13–15 As the leader of indie-rock underdog Helium in the mid-1990s, guitarist Mary Timony established a cagey, subversive brand of pop that paired the alt-radio trends of the time with brainy arrangements. With her current trio, Ex Hex, Timony has gone full-on riff warrior, conjuring the beer-soaked ghosts of classic rock on 2014’s Rips and reminding festival crowds that rock and roll can still be fun as hell. The group returned March with a follow-up, It’s Real, which pushed the faders even further into the stratosphere. A book signing with Michael Thurmond will celebrate the reissue of his A Story Untold: Black Men and Women in Athens History, published 41 years ago to preserve and promote the contributions of local black community members. His latest book, Freedom: Georgia’s Antislavery Heritage, 1733–1865, presents a history of the struggle to abolish slavery from the early 18th Century until the end of the Civil War. Raised as a sharecropper’s son in Clarke County, Thurmond became the first local African American elected to the Georgia General Assembly since Reconstruction, and is currently DeKalb County CEO. Caledonia Lounge · 9 p.m. · $7–9 One of a handful of certifiable supergroups to recently spring out of the suddenly-reanimated Athens punk scene, McQQeen has spent the last half-year busting ass on the live circuit, winning over one sweat-soaked crowd at a time.

The band, which neatly blends bruising skate-punk with psychedelic accoutrements and hardcore gloom, released a self-titled debut album earlier this month, and it will celebrate the record’s release at an eclectic Caledonia show that also features doom dudes Vincas, dream-pop outfit Dagmar Vork, DIY-electro project Bat and the Bears and Richmond, VA noise-rockers Prayer Group. I’m Being Food Stalked ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Bonita, There’s a guy at my job who hangs out in the break room all morning, requesting extra food from everyone who enters the room. He does it in a funny way, saying stuff like, “What you got in there? I know you got something for me today!” or, “What we eatin’?”

Lately, he’s come into my shared office and asked the entire room if anyone has snacks.

Typically, someone will hand him a bag of microwave popcorn or a protein bar. One day, I fell for it and gave him a ridiculous low-carb thingy that I got at Aldi. He took one bite and went, “Damn, this thing’s good—you got another one?” I told him that I had extra, but only for me to eat, but I told him where I bought them and where to find them in the store.

Bonita, I’d like to get your advice on a matter that has been bugging me. I was married for about 32 years, had a child with my former husband but divorced after an unfortunate set of circumstances. I ignored my partner’s narcissism for years, then realized after the divorce that I attracted narcissistic people. I have no desire for that kind of person in my life ever again.

I’m in my 60s, and thought that by now the men would have grown up, but have found the opportunities here are dismal. I’ve tried online dating, and don’t like it. I’ve dated, but the guys are narcissistic or dirt-poor or sick or say really immature things about nearly every subject under the sun. Why did I ever give him a stupid snack bar when he could go to the vending machines down the hall? I’m tired of avoiding him and want to tell him to F off. It doesn’t help that he obviously doesn’t eat enough—he brings salads for work every day—and sleeps on the job.

There are lots of reasons why he might be coming to work hungry, but his hunger isn’t your problem. Say your hellos and be polite, but start plainly ignoring him when he comes in and asks the entire office to feed him. When he yells down the hallway to beg a candy bar off of you (what an ass!), just keep walking. If he walks up and asks you personally, say exactly what you said when he asked for a second candy bar: You bring food to work for yourself, not him.

This sounds more annoying than anything, but I encourage you to draw a clear boundary around this. This is a huge slippery slope as far as overbearing, overreaching co-workers are concerned.

Most people couple up or get married with an intention to start a family, own a home and all that junk, but you’ve been down that road already. If I were you, I’d just be taking vacations and getting laid. You said it—half of these men ain’t shit, but you can date and have a solid companion in your life without taking on each other’s debt or raising their grandkids.

I don’t think you’re looking for that, anyway. You should keep enjoying your independence while also leaving space in your life for an awesome boyfriend. Look at these men less like future husbands and more like a good time, and stay focused on having some awesome golden years. f
