Commission Approves Downtown Bike Lanes PLUS, ANOTHER OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

By Blake Aued news@flagpole.com Athens is getting its first permanent protected bike lane after the Athens-Clarke County Commission voted to add a buffered bike lane on Hancock Avenue, as well as an unprotected one on College Avenue, providing a safer way for cyclists to get downtown.

On College, a “climbing lane” will run from Elizabeth Street south up the hill to City Hall, with another bike lane on the other side running north to Hoyt Street. On Hancock, a painted buffer will separate the bike lanes from car traffic between College and Pulaski Street. On-street parking will be moved away from the curb on Hancock between Pulaski and Hull Street, creating an additional buffer.

“This is going to increase, I hope greatly increase, the number of cyclists we have coming downtown,” said Commissioner Tim Denson. Infrastructure will have to be geared more toward cyclists and pedestrians than drivers to fulfill the commission’s commitment to 100 percent renewable energy, he said.

Business owner Ricky Chastain raised concerns about losing on-street parking and delivery trucks’ ability to maneuver—a fear echoed by Commissioner Jerry NeSmith.

The plan will actually add a net total of six parking spaces, Commissioner Melissa Link said, but research indicates that bike lanes actually bring customers to commercial areas rather than deter drivers. Besides, “the point is to not need as many parking spaces, because people find it easier to get on their bikes and go downtown,” she said.

The new configuration had some detractors on the commission. The painted buffer doesn’t truly protect cyclists, because drivers could still pull up to the curb, Commissioner Mike Hamby said. “Is this the best we can do?” he wondered, asking to hold the plan for a month to develop other options.

NeSmith and commissioners Allison Wright and Ovita Thornton voted for Hamby’s motion to delay, but it failed 5–4. (Commissioner Andy Herod was absent.) The plan favored by the county Transportation and Public Works Department—and the county’s new bicycle and pedestrian safety coordinator, Hilary Essig—was then approved unanimously.

In addition, the commission unanimously approved a reconfiguration of Hawthorne Avenue and Oglethorpe Avenue to make the intersection safer, with some tweaks proposed by Denson and Link.

Commissioners opted for a signalized intersection over a much more expensive roundabout.

The Classic Center also made a push at the July 2 meeting to add partial funding for a $70 million arena to the list of projects funded by SPLOST, the 1 percent sales tax for capital expenses. Another speaker, Aaron Gregory, president of the local chapter of the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws (NORML), pulled what appeared to be a marijuana bud out of a prescription pill bottle while telling the commission he’s leaving Athens because he was arrested for pot possession during an illegal search. “There’s a flower that grows out in the desert, and they call it hope,” Gregory said. “You can get it at an apothecary shop on Flamingo Road in Las Vegas, Nevada, and I’m going to be heading over there.”

Police Shoot Man at River Club

As shown by body camera footage ACCPD released the following day, Bidinger and Harrison immediately drew their guns and repeatedly told Hong to drop the knife, alternating between orders and pleas. “We can help you,” Harrison said. Hong walked toward the officers with the knife as they retreated down the long driveway to Macon Highway, shouting at them to “do it!”

As they reached the road, Harrison told Bidinger “less lethal.” Bidinger put away his pistol and took out his Taser. At the same time, Hong charged at Harrison, who fired multiple shots. Hong fell to the ground, but as Harrison holstered his weapon and approached him, Hong got back up and moved toward Bidinger, yelling at him to “shoot me!” He then grabbed Harrison, holding him around the neck from behind with one arm as he reached for Harrison’s gun. Harrison slumped down, and Bidinger shot Hong again.

Paramedics who were standing by treated Hong, but he died at the scene.

Police Chief Cleveland Spruill would not comment on what made Hong so agitated.

Hong was not a UGA student, but he may have been subleasing an apartment at River Club, Spruill said.

Harrison has seven years’ experience on the force. Bidinger is a rookie officer.

He was also involved in the fatal March shooting of Thomas Wayne Swinford, who pointed what turned out to be a realistic-looking air pistol at police during a standoff in a Westlake Drive parking lot.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation cleared the officers in that shooting, Spruill said, although it could be a year before the district attorney’s office releases a final report.

Bidinger went through firearms training and was given a psychological evaluation before returning to duty after the Swinford shooting, Spruill said. He described Bidinger as distraught over the July 1 incident but “comfortable with the decisions he made.”

Although the GBI is handling the investigation, Spruill said the video clearly shows that the officers had reason to fear for their lives and acted in self-defense.

Both officers are on administrative leave while the investigation is underway. f

Six Historic Athens Buildings That Could Vanish

ome of them are hidden from view, and some you might pass by regularly. But all of them are under threat from development or decay.

The Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation recently released its first list of six local “Places in Peril,” inspired by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation’s program of the same name. (The statewide list includes the Madison Theatre in Atlanta, the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Garden in Savannah and The Cedars, a Victorian mansion in Wilkes County, among others.)

The sites were chosen from nominations made by individuals and community groups that ACHF Executive Director Tommy Valentine hopes to partner with to preserve.

Nominees must be at least 50 Frank C. Maddox years old, largely unchanged from the time they were built and listed on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

“These are ongoing preservation efforts that are kind of orphaned, and this gives us a chance to get behind them,” Valentine says.

Central Baptist Church Cemetery Kim Burch already knew there had once been a black church and cemetery off Robert Hardeman Road, but she became alarmed when she saw a “for sale” sign on the parcel next door. After some research, she discovered that the church

Behind Billups Grove Baptist Church near the county landfill off Lexington Road sits a one-room wooden schoolhouse where African-American children were educated during the Jim Crow era. According to local historian Fred Smith, the school closed in the 1950s, when Athens started to build better brick schools for black students in response to desegregation. At one point, an effort was made to move the structure to Hilsman Middle School, where it would have been used for experiential learning, Valentine said, but that never came to fruition. Now, it is deteriorating and needs to be stabilized.

While now part of Athens-Clarke County, Whitehall was once its own incorporated town. The community, a collection of mill houses along Whitehall Road, runs from “the mill to the mansion,” Valentine says. The textile mill on the North Oconee River, built in 1832, was renovated into lofts. Whitehall Mansion, an impressive brick home completed 60 years later, sits on forest land owned by UGA and is maintained by the university. Both are on the National Register of Historic Places. But everything in between— including two churches and the remaining mill houses—is threatened by unrestricted development and demolition requests. They could be torn down unless a historic district is established.

Frank C. Maddox Center This Art Deco building on Magnolia Street has gone through many lives, and Greater Bethel AME Church and other supporters hope it survives to see a fourth act.

The building was a hub for the African-American community in the West Broad area for 50 years. First, it served as an American Legion post for World War II veterans, hosting dances, weddings and other celebrations, including performances by James Brown and B.B. King. In the early 1960s, Greater Bethel held services there after its original sanctuary burned down. (It’s named for the pastor at the time.) In the mid-1960s, it became Athens’ first daycare for black children, but the daycare closed in 1996.

Beech Haven In the midst of Atlanta Highway’s apartments and strip malls sits Beech Haven, a 149acre wooded retreat along the Middle Oconee River that the Rowland family sold to Athens-Clarke County in 2014.

The house on the property—designed and built by two local African-American master craftsmen, Ike Osbourne and Jim Glenn—is a significant example of Arts and Crafts architecture. It’s surrounded by gardens, bridges and stone sculptures influenced by Charles Rowland’s travels to Asia.

Those structures need maintenance.

Eventually, the ACHF wants to create a park on the property, with access from neighborhoods on Sycamore Drive, as well as from the Oglethorpe Avenue area via a greenway to Ben Burton Park. A scaled-back version of the plan is currently included in the SPLOST package that will be up for a vote in November, pending Athens-Clarke County Commission approval in July.

The part that’s for sale can’t be developed, because it’s too small for a septic tank, but the possibility remains that, at some point, city water and sewer could be run through the church property.

On the property are the church’s foundation, the remnants of a house that burned down and three gravesites, one a small metal marker for a 2-year-old. Burch believes more gravesites are probably there, as well. The Winterville

When it was built in 1914, Athens High and Industrial, helmed by renowned principal Samuel Harris, was the only high school for black students in the state of Georgia.

Generations of black Athens youth were educated there. Athens High moved to what’s now the H.T. Edwards complex in 1956, and the Reese Street School stopped operating as a school in 1960. The Athens Masonic Lodge bought the building in 1968.

Although the gym and other outbuildings are gone, the main building remains much the same as it was 105 years ago, with eight large rooms, tall windows, steam heating and several majestic cedars outside. Led by Marvin Nunnally, the group of Masons is working to raise $250,000 to restore the building.

RENEWAL ROCK Grand Vapids Get Back on Their Feet

In

January 2015, local alt-rock quartet Grand Vapids released a stunning, slowcore-steeped debut album, Guarantees. Though it likely wasn’t intended as a statement, putting out a record that early in the year— before much of Athens’ college-aged population is back in town and the music industry has time to snap out of its year-end-list holiday coma—implies at least a modicum of confidence that it’s going to stick. And it did—Guarantees was named Flagpole’s No. 1 album of the year, with Grand Vapids landing support slots on lots of bills featuring needto-know touring bands.

But while the band became a citywide name, it never quite gained the traction to propel it to the national stage. The years since have been characterized by losses of momentum due to lineup changes, the dissolution of romantic relationships and other forces beyond the group’s control. Now, refashioned and renewed, the group is set to release a long-awaited second album, Eat the Shadow, a disaffected yet triumphant testament to the power of plowing ahead.

The band’s chief setback came on the heels of the release of Guarantees, when fellow up-and-comers Mothers were beginning to turn heads beyond Athens. Grand Vapids singer and guitarist McKendrick Bearden had assisted with Mothers’ breakout debut, When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired. When it came time to tour, he recommended his friend, Patrick Morales, for the role of bassist. “I kind of quit everything in my life to sort of chase that for a while, because it seemed to be going somewhere,” says Morales.

“And then it exploded.”

Mothers quickly climbed the indie ladder, garnering critical acclaim for their album and touring their asses off as

a result. The stress of that attention, coupled with various personal issues, led to Morales being replaced, ironically, by Grand Vapids’ bassist at the time, Chris Goggans.

While Morales, who would eventually step in to play bass for Grand Vapids, describes the whole scenario as an “emotional clusterfuck,” he now looks back on what transpired and sees his addition to the group as “weirdly fitting…

I’ve always been a fan of my friends’ music, and this was a really awesome opportunity to get to play on all the songs I’d kind of been backseat driving.”

“To quantify it,” though, adds Bearden, “I feel like it more or less took a year out of our band’s life. It was still productive, but it was just a year of hard work and some healing.”

I think the unknown is more tantalizing than the known.

The band committed to getting back on solid ground, rehearsing and tightening up as a live unit while writing new material as time allowed. (Full disclosure: I heard most of these songs being demoed, as I shared an apartment at the time with the band’s other songwriter, Austin Harris.)

In early 2018, Grand Vapids stepped into Chase Park Transduction to begin recording their sophomore album.

The group enlisted producer David Barbe to helm the process, explaining that they wanted a set of fresh ears on the material. Barbe’s approach proved to be a natural conduit for the band’s restored energy.

“I think he assumes your ability and your confidence, and he’s just like, ‘OK, well, you like this sound, so let’s do that,’” Bearden says. “Maybe it’s sort of in the line of Steve Albini’s school of thought, to let the band be what they are.”

Many of Eat the Shadow’s nine songs were recorded live to tape, with Harris’ writing credits outweighing Bearden’s by a slight five-to-four margin. Stylistically, the album retains many of the more gauzy elements of Guarantees, but Eat the Shadow balances them with post-punk influences, conveying an immediacy indicative of the band’s behindthe-scenes goings-on. New York transplant Jesse Lafain has since replaced original drummer Paul Stevens, and he proves a natural fit in accentuating those elements in a live setting.

As much as the band now wants to do the record justice in terms of promoting and touring behind it, Bearden acknowledges that, given all that delayed and then informed its creation, releasing this highly personal document into the world is bittersweet.

“It’s perfect until someone hears it,” he says. “I get a lot of joy out of the making of it, and I’m excited for it to be out and for people to hear it and have it. But yeah, I think the unknown is more tantalizing than the known.”

“It’s like the Schroedinger’s cat of recordings,” Morales chimes in with a smile. “You enjoy it until it leaves the box.”

“It’s more thrilling in that way,” Bearden adds. “I guess where I’m at is, ‘Cool, I’m ready to do it again.’ This has been a few years of our time. It represents a lot for all of us, and now it’s like, ‘Well, it’s not ours anymore.’” f

learned about the Grateful Dead the same way I learned about most of my favorite bands when I was young: corporate rock radio. WKLS 96 Rock regularly played “Truckin’” and “Casey Jones,” two of the most accessible tunes the band produced, and I would often hear them on “Psychedelic Psaturdays” while working my weekend landscaping job. In the spring of 1985, 96 Rock broadcast a special on the Dead called “20 Years So Far.” From the opening notes of the Live/Dead version of “St. Stephen,” I was hooked. I loved that Gibson SG into a Fender Twin sound, the slight peal of feedback and the massive bass sound tumbling into the riff. The hippie-dippy lyrics were pretty funny—almost like Spinal Tap in the Summer of Love—but the verse ended with a cynical “Wherever he goes/ The people all complain.” An unexpected twist that turned out to be a staple of their lyrics.

I tried to see them at the Fox that fall, but I didn’t know the deal with Dead shows. They were just another old band on the radio to me, and I figured I could go by Turtle’s after work and pick up tickets, as I had done for many concerts. (I camped out for the big metal shows, of course.) I was cutting grass at 9:30 a.m. when I heard the announcement that the show had sold out immediately. That’s when I learned about the Deadhead subculture and all of the trappings around the band.

I didn’t get to see them until a couple of years later Kevin Sweeney (hi, Hollis!), when they were on the crest of the wave of massive and, ultimately, destructive popularity.

I’m glad I did see them then, because the shows became pretty depressing later on. (Though I’m sure it already was depressing to the older heads in the ’80s, when I was seeing them for the first time.)

In that gap between missing them and seeing them, I learned all about their history and their catalog. I would rent the VHS tapes for The Grateful Dead Movie and Dead Ahead just about every weekend. I learned an entirely new way of playing guitar from listening to Jerry Garcia (and from my parallel appreciation for the Allman Brothers). I was used to playing lead guitar in the Page/Hendrix vein of pentatonic blues scales. The Dead and Allmans introduced me to that other scale (Mixolydian—you know, the one where you put your little finger there, instead of there, like “Ramblin’ Man”) and to endless improvisation. Garcia was as influential on my playing as any other guitar player, as well as being my No. 1 fashion influence.

One thing that always fascinated me was the band’s unique equipment. The Wall of Sound PA system, Alembic guitars and basses, the custom Irwin guitars. (The battle over custody of those guitars really showed me the light as to who was who in the band—#teamphil!) They really did some innovative stuff. The club I often work at has Meyer speakers and Furman power conditioners—both companies were created by Grateful Dead crew members. So many things that are industry standards now came out of the

band and crew’s acid-fueled experimentation. I guess it helps when you can see the music.

Unlike many people, I’ve always been a fan of their records. Maybe it was all the years of studying those VHS tapes and learning songs like “Franklin’s Tower” and “Fire on the Mountain” from those legitimately released shows.

Fave raves: “Althea,” from Go to Heaven: I love the intro lick, the snappy (compared to the smacked-out live pace) tempo and the great sound of the recording. Like any Deadhead, sometimes the lyrics resonate with me, and “Ain’t nobody messing with you but you” is something I’ve thought about many people over the years. I should make a bumper sticker.

him, the weird, clunky bass chords after the first verse— there’s a lot to like there, as long as you’re already digging it. I wouldn’t try to convert anyone by showing them this— that tactic failed with Nick Bielli when we were in high school.

“Cream Puff War”/“The Golden Road,” from The Grateful Dead: Tie for garage-punk favorites. I’m not a big Pigpen fan, but the fuzzy Farfisa sound that drives these songs along is pretty kickass. They were obviously on speed for this whole record, and I prefer speedy music to sloooow, for the most part. If this was the only record they had ever made, they would probably be included on Nuggets compilations.

“Crazy Fingers Jam,” Feb. 28, 1975: This rehearsal tape recorded at Bob Weir’s home studio sounds like Jerry just got his first MXR Distortion+ pedal. He should’ve just left it on all the time for the next 20 years.

“Franklin’s Tower”/“Space/Drums”/“Fire on the Mountain,” from the Dead Ahead video and Dead Set album: The first time I ever heard the two songs bookending this combo was on the Dead Ahead VHS. I didn’t know at the time that this was an unusual pairing—I didn’t hear the “Scarlet”/“Fire” combo until years later. I like these versions as much as any. f

This globetrotting Spider-Man adventure is a charmer that stands out amidst a summer movie class deemed underwhelming.

MIDSOMMAR (R) Ari Aster’s follow-up to Hereditary is every bit as thrilling as his debut. Four American college students (Fighting With My Family’s Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter and William Jackson Harper) join their Swedish friend, Pelle (Vilhelm Blomgren), as he returns to his rural community for their midsummer festival. Mind-altering substances flow regularly—Aster relays the effects through constant undulation—and a barely-setting midnight sun makes everyone a little edgy, especially Pugh’s Dani, who is still reeling from a family tragedy. As the festivities get wilder, tensions among the friends intensify.

Aster’s fans need not worry. He impresses with a complicated Swedish slasher that nods to both The Wicker Man and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre while crowning Pugh as the latest scream queen. f

Easily one of the fastest-rising bands in recent Athens memory, these boys made quick work of this record. Member Seth Martin told me they recorded the entire thing, start to finish, in about five hours. Further, they did it all on a porch in Fortsonia. good representation of what the band has been doing for the past year or so. For the uninitiated, expect a slew of honky-tonk bona fides mixed with swingin’ rock and roll. Especially magnetic are the Stones-y “Kiss You on the Jeans,” the doo-wop-ish “Ain’t Losing Time” and “Put My Records On,” which has all the earmarks of a 21st Century Dr. Hook jam. GIMME A BEAT: Songwriter Kyle AigImoukhuede used to make music under the name Luke Bass, but now makes music under the name Kyle Corduroy. He’s got a new EP out July 21 named Love Us. He doesn’t really make dance music as such, but rather dance/trap/big-room-influenced songs. (Yeah, trap and big room are pretty much polar opposites, but still.) I’ll be the first to admit I’m not crazy about the way he manipulates his vocals with effects and such. There are definitely pure pop moments that shine through (“Love 2,” “Melancholy”), but overall, it’s difficult to grasp this as a complete object, as opposed to a collection of tracks. It’s about too long by half. That said, if someone would send “Say I’m Right” straight to Brian McKnight

What Trade-offs Are Normal?

ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Hi Bonita, My boyfriend’s actions are getting to the point where I think I need to end the relationship before I end up with a longer, more painful situation down the line. However, I question my own judgment, because I know that no one is perfect, and I don’t know what is a real problem and what is just regular humans-being-humans stuff that I have to accept in order to be in a partnership. Many of my relationships have ended two or three years in, because I couldn’t deal with different aspects of these boyfriends’ lives or personalities or differences.

It’s been suggested to me that what really happened is the infatuation phase ended, and I didn’t stick around for the good stuff where relationships really get built.

I feel that for my boyfriend’s over-attachment to his family and seeming unwillingness to commit, there’s a guy out there who wants to commit and has a healthy relationship with his family, but

doesn’t have a job or any plans for the future.

For every guy who plays copious video games instead of hanging out with his partner, there’s a guy who doesn’t play video games, but doesn’t cook or know how to iron a shirt.

I’m just saying, I don’t know what tradeoffs to choose! My boyfriend is funny, has a great job and always includes me, but he’s also way too connected to his family and seemingly unwilling to commit. The last guy I dated lied constantly, to the point that he didn’t have a job when he claimed he did—but he was down to commit. I know no partner is the complete package, but I don’t know what I’m supposed to accept as human, and what are deal-breakers in the long run.

What trade-offs are normal in a relationship? To what extent do I need to grow up and accept the difficult things about my boyfriend?

Do you think I’ve bailed before the good stuff because the shine of infatuation has worn off, and, if so, how can I stop this pattern?

Hey Trade-offs, Ignore whoever told you three years is still the “honeymoon phase.” That’s plenty of time to determine if someone is marriage material. You haven’t described anything unreasonable in your expectations of a boyfriend—you want commitment and stability, like anyone does. No partner is a complete package, that’s true, but you’re allowed to walk away from liars and cheats.

I’d like to know more about your boyfriend’s relationship with his family, because it’s not odd to me at all that a grown man would want to be close to his relatives. It’s not reasonable to ask someone to take time away from family just to date you, because frankly, those lifelong relationships run deeper and will outlast whatever you have with your boyfriend by a mile. On the other hand, ever-present in-laws can be bothersome when a couple is still in the discovery

phase, and it can also feel a little awkward to be meeting the parents on the second date. But I don’t have any real facts here, so I’m just spitting in the wind. Tread softly when it comes to family.

We all have to accept the less-than-perfect parts of our partners, but more than anything, I don’t want you settling for truly bad behavior in the spirit of a relationship “trade-off.” Lying about work is never acceptable and is a tremendous red flag for all kinds of dishonesty, but cooking and ironing are life skills that I personally didn’t lean into until I was well into my 20s.

How old are y’all? If this is guy is a fortysomething, you should get laid a few more times and block his number—he’s done growing. But if y’all are both young, then you’re both still figuring stuff out. Maybe he’s got the job stuff down, but he’s still working his way through ​The Joy of Cooking, and he needs mom on speed dial so he doesn’t burn the roux. Who knows? There’s stuff you can meet him halfway on, for sure, but your standards and expectations are perfectly reasonable. f

To Fix Education, Fix the Economy POVERTY PULLS SCHOOLS DOWN, BUT SCHOOLS DON’T PULL POVERTY UP

By Pete McCommons pete@flagpole.com When I was growing up, a man could work at a service station and make enough to support his family, while his wife stayed home to look after them. (That’s the way the genders bent at that time and place.)

Now, there aren’t many service stations left (thank goodness for Alps Road 76!), and in most families, it is necessary for both spouses to work, and they’re lucky if they’re only working one job each. Many are working, but still in poverty; some are working, but are homeless.

We all have enough statistics rattling around in our heads to understand that our full-employment economy, booming stock market and corporate profits mask the reality that most of the benefits accrue only to the companies and people at the very top of the economy. We also know that, in spite

To say that better schools are the solution, while 30 percent of our people live in poverty, is a cruel delusion that deflects our attention from the real problem. It is a popular delusion, because it does nothing and spends nothing to fight the root cause of academic inequality: economic inequality.

Our national and state economies are carefully rigged to ensure a constant supply of poor people, who must take low-paying jobs with no benefits and work so many hours to try to make ends meet that they cannot help their children with their homework or participate in the activities of their children’s schools. In many cases, they see their children go on from school to prison.

Working poverty has a strong effect on schools, and, hey, America is No. 1.

of the rich folks’ boom times, the average person’s earning power has shrunk since the 1970s, and of course the cost of living has skyrocketed, as if we were all driving a Lexus.

We know, too, that Athens has one of the highest poverty rates in the country, even if you eliminate those “low-income” kids living in their luxury student highrises. And we know that a high percentage of those Athenians in poverty are black, many of them qualifying as the working poor. We also know that many of the children from these poor families are having trouble in school. And we think we know that the solution to all these problems is better schools.

But is that the solution? Recently, The Atlantic published an article titled “Better Schools Won’t Fix America.” Surprisingly, the article says, basically, that better schools will not solve poverty, but that solving poverty will bring better schools.

No matter how much you improve the teaching of science and math, students won’t do much better if they are coming to school from impoverished families who are desperately trying to make a living and have no time or money for the kind of vital home support middle-class families can provide.

The point of the Atlantic article is that while we all always want better schools, this is not an educational problem, but an eco-

Our real debate should be about how we here in Athens can break this cycle of poverty. We have a local government that can grasp this dilemma and has the will to confront it. We know that our Republican legislators and governor will do nothing to alleviate income disparities. In fact, our state legislature specifically prohibits our local government from raising the minimum wage here above the state-mandated $5.15 an hour, thus guaranteeing that parents working minimum-wage jobs remain below the poverty line.

The point of the Atlantic article, obvious whether or not you read it, is that as long as our community is crippled by poverty, our schools will be crippled, too, no matter who the superintendent is, or the principals, teachers or board of education members.

Our Republican legislators—senators Cowsert and Ginn, representatives Gaines and Wiedower and our governor, Brian Kemp—must be amused to see us fighting among ourselves over educational policy.

They know such squabbles won’t have any effect on their corporate and well-heeled sponsors. None of them will have to worry about paying any more taxes, which is the only way income inequality will ever be addressed, and the only way our schools will ever be improved.

It’s the best of all possible worlds—for Republicans, and those they serve. f
