CCSD Is in Turmoil TENSE TALKS ON PRINCIPALS AND THE BUDGET, AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

By Blake Aued and John Huie news@flagpole.com Clarke County School Superintendent Demond Means backed down from his plan to cut grants for individual schools in his fiscal 2020 budget. Instead, he cut funding for social/emotional learning staff and restorative justice. That didn’t sit well with some school board members, who passed the budget nonetheless.

Board members supported Means’ plan to hire more counselors, social workers and behavioral specialists, but balked at cutting two-thirds of the $450,000 in grant funding available to local school governance teams. Just hours before the June 13 meeting where the board was scheduled to vote on the budget, he submitted a new plan that restored funding for LSGT grants, but included fewer SEL staff and diverted federal funds away from restorative justice programs.

The board was not allowed to change Means’ budget proposal, but only vote it up or down. If the board rejected it, Means had said he would withhold $3,000 raises for teachers.

Member Greg Davis asked if funding earmarked for central office staff and professional services could be used to fund LSGT grants, SEL staff and restorative justice.

Means said no.

Davis was the lone board member to vote against the budget. “I will not fall prey to Solomon’s wisdom and cut the baby in half,” he said. Means called the comment

“inflammatory language.”

Board members were clearly caught offguard by the new budget proposal. Kara Dyckman said Means had sent six options in previous days before changing course the afternoon of the meeting. Frances Berry asked for a 10-minute break to think about the new proposal. Charles Worthy objected, saying the board should vote now. “I’m doing due diligence, Mr. Worthy,” Berry told him.

When questioned again about why he wants to spend $100,000 to hire an assistant police chief, Means said he wants to “pivot away” from using Athens-Clarke County school resource Kara Dyckman officers. Eventually, he said he wants to use the $325,000 CCSD pays ACCPD for five officers to hire three officers who work for CCSD and are trained in restorative justice and de-escalation. Dyckman said that cutting funding for restorative justice training, as Means proposed, is contrary to his goal in replacing school resource officers. Means said that carryover funds may be available, and that LSGTs can apply for grants to

Odds and Ends Two top officials who were hired in 2016 are leaving the Athens-Clarke County government this month. Transportation and Public Works Director Drew Raessler is returning to Cobb County as deputy director of its Department of Transportation, and Assistant Manager Jestin Johnson is moving to his hometown of Atlanta to become deputy chief operations officer for the city.

Public Utilities Director Frank Stephens will run TPW on an interim basis, while Manager Blaine Williams and Assistant Manager Deborah Lonon will split Johnson’s duties until a replacement is found. Lonon was promoted from director of the Housing and Community Development Department in February to replace Robert Hiss.

The Athens Banner-Herald recently confirmed what Flagpole originally reported a year ago—that Target is opening a small urban-format store downtown. The store will occupy a former restaurant and nightclub space in University Tower, as well as the first floor of a four-story apartment building planned for a parking lot next door.

In other ABH news, the paper recently laid off veteran crime reporter Joe Johnson as part of a companywide wave of cuts at GateHouse Media, the paper’s owner. The staff now has just two news reporters covering multiple counties. Johnson, who has been suffering from health problems and is only three years from retirement age, started his own website, classiccitynews.com.

fund the training. But Linda Davis—participating by phone from out of town—said relying on LSGT grants could put different schools on different footing, noting that many local families are transient and change schools often.

Means also reviewed the process for hiring principals with the board during the nearly five-hour meeting. He addressed his controversial hire to run Alps Road Elementary, Natosha Harris, who withdrew a few days after the board approved her hiring as part of a package of personnel recommendations June 6. Parents had noted on social media that Harris, like Means, is from Milwaukee, and is a Facebook friend and sorority sister of Means’ wife.

Means blamed her withdrawal on “external stress.” He denied knowing Harris and said that people had implied he worked for Milwaukee public schools, which is false. (He came to Athens from MequonThiensville, an affluent suburb, and also ran Milwaukee’s “turnaround district.”)

“Mrs. Means was an educator within Milwaukee Public Schools for more than 20 years,” CCSD communications director Mary Walsh Wickwire told Flagpole. “She has crossed paths with countless talented professionals in her work. This does not mean that she is ‘friends’ with every member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated or all educators who work in Milwaukee Public Schools. This is an important distinction that should be shared with the public.”

Means called the social media commentary surrounding Harris’ hiring a “bloodsport” and lashed out at his critics. “When my wife is pulled into this, I have a problem,” he said. “I think it speaks to the toxic culture, and I hope some sources apologize.”

LSGTs—made up of parents, school personnel and community members—recommend finalists for principal positions to the superintendent and his cabinet, and the team at Alps Road unanimously recommended Harris, member Lee Smith told the board. The LSGT also recommended three other candidates. Knox was the lone board member to vote against the package including Harris. He later explained that he voted “no” over concerns about the hiring process at Alps.

Means said he is looking for principals who will hold people accountable and make sure “certain perspectives” are no longer a part of the culture. Some teachers, he said, are “nice people, they come to work, but if you’re not getting results for children, we’re failing students.”

Earlier in the meeting, when discussing equity, Greg Davis asked about communication problems between Means and principals. Means said principals are scared of teachers and parents, and compared them to “cruise directors” who just want to keep people happy and are unwilling to make major changes. He said he wants to “dismantle” the system, repeating a saying he frequently uses: “Our organization is perfectly designed for the results we’re getting.” He said he has been relying on his central office staff “because I didn’t want

the principals to have to do the hard work,” calling that decision a mistake.

Left unmentioned: Means has hired most of CCSD’s principals himself. Sixteen of 21 have left, been moved to the central office or changed schools since he took over two years ago.

In addition to reposting the Alps job, Hilsman Middle School remains without a principal. And on Friday, Chase Street Elementary principal Andrea Neher abruptly resigned after receiving a negative evaluation.

“Dr. Means made clear to me that I had more than fallen short in meeting his expectations in leading Chase Street, and that my leadership behaviors did not appropriately address ‘teacher reaction to student underperformances,’ although by many measures, our tree frogs [the school mascot] performed at or near the top of their peers across the district,” Neher wrote in a message to PTO members.

The board’s role, Means explained, is to approve or reject personnel recommendations. “I’m struggling with how to do that— approve or reject a person—given no other information but their name,” Dyckman said. Means said he will share their professional background with the board if asked.

Means said he has concerns about the concerns raised about Harris—namely, that the interview process is supposed to be confidential, and it appears that someone on the LSGT leaked information. Board member Tawana Mattox said she shared information with the board from a “third party” who was afraid to speak out.

“What I’ve found out on this board is that we’re in a position of black and white,” Mattox said. “If I ask any questions, it’s because our superintendent is black.

That is not right. We’ve got to do our due diligence.”

The board also briefly discussed replacing former District 4 representative Jared Bybee, who resigned and moved to California. Although Bybee announced his impending resignation in March, the board has seemed to be caught off-guard by his departure. Applications to serve out the remainder of Bybee’s term will be accepted through Aug. 1, and the board will vote on his replacement Aug. 8. More information will be posted on the CCSD website at some point. [Blake Aued]

SPLOST Could Expand As they move toward a final decision on what projects to include in SPLOST 2020, commissioners are discussing expanding that sales-tax referendum to include even more projects—and to run about a year longer to pay for them. If voters approve the package in November, the penny sales tax will be extended at least 10 more years to raise at least $278 million for capital projects ranging from parks and infrastructure to affordable housing and a new courthouse.

At last week’s work session, Commissioner Mike Hamby worried that park maintenance needs, including pool renovations at Bishop Park, were not sufficiently funded. Commissioner Tim Denson agreed, and suggested adding the additional year of collections. But the last-minute proposal frustrated Commissioner Russell Edwards: “Now we’re talking about shoehorning this thing in a couple of weeks before the [commission’s] SPLOST vote?”

“dire” needs of county departments. “I don’t want to get a bunch of phone calls the night before I have to take this vote,” he said.

The final vote on the projects list, originally scheduled for July 2, will probably be pushed back a week or two.

Hancock Avenue downtown will be resurfaced this summer, and so, in accordance with the county’s recent bike/pedestrian plan, it has been evaluated for adding bicycle lanes. Hillary Essig, ACC’s new bicycle, pedestrian and safety coordinator, showed commissioners a proposed plan to add bike lanes along College Avenue—from the Greenway connection at Elizabeth Street up the hill to Hancock downtown— and then down Hancock to the existing bike lanes on Pulaski. Most would be separated from car traffic by pavement markings, while the lanes on Hancock would be further protected by placing them between the sidewalk and metered parking spaces. If commissioners approve, the changes will be made later this summer.

For reasons both environmental and political—new landfills are almost impossible to site because nobody wants to live by one—ACC is committed to diverting recyclable waste away from the landfill, requiring local trash haulers and apartments to offer recycling and providing drop-off dumpsters around town. Local businesses cooperate, too, and citizens don’t have to separate cardboard or paper or glass or plastics—that’s done by hand and machine at the “murf” (the RMPF, or Recyclable Materials Processing Facility). But “recycling right now is more expensive than the landfill,” Waste Reduction Administrator Joe Dunlop told commissioners.

Once separated and baled, most local recycling—65 tons is processed daily—is sold within the U.S., and much of it is sold within Georgia. Plastics can be turned into carpet, and Coca-Cola needs a lot of aluminum for cans, Dunlop said. But processing costs are up because people have gotten sloppier about contamination—dirty recycling can’t be used, and trash in recycling bins can ruin a whole load—and because prices are down for recycled materials. In the past, sales of ACC’s recyclables more than covered its processing costs, but not

this year, when costs have exceeded income by over $200,000. “Markets almost always exist for clean materials—and ‘clean’ is the operative word there,” Dunlop said.

Citing “constant” complaints about noise and litter as multiple trash trucks roll through neighborhoods, commissioners asked for followup about the possibility of developing separate zones for each trash hauler (ACC limits them to six), or whether county trucks could take over all trash pickups.

“We love our roundabouts,” Transportation and Public Works Director Drew Raessler told commissioners, but replacing the traffic light at Oglethorpe and Hawthorne (adjacent to CVS) with a two-lane roundabout would cost well over $2 million and take parking spaces from adjacent businesses. Still, the intersection is a high priority for improvement (and funded by an earlier SPLOST). Raessler recommends keeping a stoplight, but changing the layout of the turn lanes so drivers can better see oncoming traffic. But Hawthorne has more serious problems than the intersection improvements can fix, he said. The corridor has been added to the regional transportation plan for possible eventual (and expensive) improvements.

ACC’s Planning Department, along with graduate students at UGA, studied the histories of 47 downtown buildings that were included in a moratorium on demolitions that ACC commissioners passed in January, as a prelude to possibly including those buildings and others in an expanded downtown historic district. The areas being studied include three buildings just east of the current historic district (which is mostly east of Lumpkin Street), and dozens of buildings west of it (between Lumpkin and Newton streets).

Once the research is done, commissioners could make a designation decision toward year’s end. Whether designated or not, the students and planners will make available the stories, documents, and photos they’ve discovered about these downtown buildings. “We’ve really had these fantastic conversations with all kinds of folks,” Senior Planner Bruce Lonnee told commissioners. The Bad Old Days WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM A CENTURY AGO

A Democratic president who had promised to “make the world safe for democracy” instead presided over an America where democracy was imperiled by his administration’s “Red Scare” round-up, detention and deportation of domestic and foreign-born dissidents.

“It was an era of lawless and disorderly defense of law and order, of unconstitutional defense of the Constitution, of suspicion and civil conflict—in a very literal sense, a reign of terror,” wrote historian Frederick Lewis Allen. “A cloud of suspicion hung in the air, and intolerance became an American virtue,” he said in his engaging volume Only Yesterday. Fears of revolution and terrorism at home and

Billy Joel was right: “The good old days weren’t always good.” A century ago, in 1919, Americans lived in times that were both filled with hope and fraught with peril. The Versailles Treaty that brought a formal end to World War I was viewed as a triumph for President Woodrow Wilson in the postwar world.

Here in Athens, a full-page advertisement placed in the July 1, 1919 edition of the Athens Banner newspaper by downtown clothing store W.T. Collins & Company conveyed American optimism after the carnage of war. The ad touted the peace treaty as “the beginning of the most glorious chapter in human history.”

The Athens Banner’s editorial comments were no less sanguine about the postwar world. In a commentary called “The New Independence,” the local newspaper a century ago said, “A better understanding has been brought about and the future will be filled with peace and harmony throughout the world. No one country can ever again stir and disrupt the allied nations and no one country will ever attempt such again.”

It didn’t take long for such dreams to die in the America of 1919. Immigrants were looked upon with fear and suspicion as possible terrorists abroad were mirrored in front-page stories in the Athens or labor agitators. Women still had not attained the right Banner as Americans celebrated the July 4 holiday in 1919. to vote nationwide, but the Prohibition movement was “Reds Plan for Death Reign” screamed a headline above a gaining momentum. people in Hungary. On the same front page, a story headlined “Nation on Guard Against Bomb Men” said that police across the nation were on high alert against “reported plans of anarchists and other radicals to create a reign of terror by bomb explosions” during the holiday.

America was already a nervous nation after a string of terrorist bomb attacks, including the detonation of a powerful bomb that heavily damaged the Washington, DC home of the nation’s attorney general just a month earlier. Race riots flared up in towns, cities and rural hamlets throughout the nation, and lynchings of African Americans were grisly spectacles across the land. During the sweltering summer of 1919, a racial incident erupted in Chicago that led to full-scale riots and the deaths of at least 38 citizens after a young African American was drowned after he floated into a “whites only” section of Lake Michigan and was pelted with stones by a white mob on the beach. The bloody battles of 1919 gave that era the name “Red Summer.” In his history book of the same name, writer Cameron McWhirter says that African Americans who had fought for democracy overseas in World War I were not going to settle for less when they returned home from “over there.” He called the “Red Summer” of 1919 the first stirrings of an emboldened movement for black equality.

A century ago, in 1919, an America that called itself the land of the free was overshadowed by clouds of repression. Immigrants to our shores and dark-skinned American citizens both were reviled in a nation that claimed to believe that “all men are created equal.” Today, we would do well to consider our world a century ago as we take to heart the famous admonition from philosopher George Santayana: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” f

Roam If You Want To ACC CONSIDERS EASING PUBLIC DRINKING LAWS FOR FESTIVALS

Commissioner Allison Wright, who chairs the Legislative Review Committee, said she began to think about “beer tents without borders” during a St. Patrick’s Day pub crawl.

The LRC is already looking at several alcohol-related issues, such as minimum drink prices.

“When you see large groups of family and friends mingling about the whole downtown during festivals, it is a shame that separation and limitations occur when a cold beer is involved,” Wright wrote from Athens’ sister city of Cortona, Italy, where UGA is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its study abroad program. “In my U.S. and international travels, I have seen and experienced festivals that have successfully implemented can/plastic container exploration within specified festival boundaries. won’t happen this year, but soon, AthFest beer drinkers may enjoy the sweet taste of freedom.

Currently, at outdoor festivals like AthFest, beer consumption is restricted to barricaded “beer gardens.” Athens-Clarke County officials want to tear down those walls and are exploring their options.

Jill Helme, the executive director of AthFest Educates, the nonprofit that puts on AthFest, said she wants to avoid scenarios where people go into beer tents and get separated from their group, or can’t go to another stage when a band’s set ends because they haven’t finished their beverage. “We want to give people an opportunity to move more freely and not stay in one spot while you finish your beer,” she said. In addition, because a police officer must be stationed at each beer garden, the change would reduce police staffing needs and the festival’s costs. The tents would remain, however, to provide shade to keep keg trailers cool.

Mayor Kelly Girtz said he plans to assign the issue to committee this fall. “What I’ve asked [Police Chief Cleveland Spruill] to do is just pay attention during the festival season and think about what the viable options are for alcohol downtown,” he said.

Alcohol was once the third rail of Georgia politics, but many communities are easing their rules. The state legislature under former Gov. Nathan Deal (a teetotaling Baptist) let cities and counties put Sunday sales up for a vote, and such measures were overwhelmingly approved even in conservative places like Oconee County.

In recent years, the legislature has also removed some barriers to selling alcohol near churches and schools as an economic development tool aimed at encouraging grocery stores to open in urban areas.

Many Georgia cities are creating “special entertainment districts” where public drinking is allowed, said Amy Henderson, communications director for the Georgia Municipal Association. Other cities with such districts include Kansas City, MO; Louisville, KY; Birmingham, AL; and Beale Street in Memphis, TN. Savannah famously allows bar hoppers to sip from to-go cups as they wander the streets, but Wright said she’s not interested in relaxing the open-container law that far in Athens. While UGA allows tailgaters to drink on campus, she’s opposed to extending that right off campus. “Those are by nature more rowdy crowds,” she said. “Family-friendly festivals are the focus.”

While Helme was hoping to un-barricade the beer gardens this year, she said she understands why the process is taking longer, especially with a new police chief. “There is a lot to consider if they change this policy,” she said.

One change that will take effect this weekend is AthFest’s new VIP area. In previous years, VIP areas were located indoors, but this year it will be located inside a converted shipping container with a view of the Washington Street stage, Helme said.

VIP tickets are $140 for the weekend and include three free drinks per day, as well as a commemorative mug. Only 15 remained at press time, so they may be sold out. f

Scene Within the Scene ATHFEST LINEUP REFLECTS GROWING INFLUENCE OF UGA PROGRAM

The Music Business Certificate Program (MBUS) has been directed by longtime local recording engineer and musician David Barbe since 2010. In the past few years, the program has grown exponentially, with students now running an in-house record label and public relations agency, managing bands, organizing a yearly festival and playing music in one of the many groups that have emerged from the program. Some of these have already made their mark on Athens, like established local acts Futurebirds and New Madrid, both of which feature MBUS alums.

that aren’t affiliated with the Music Business Program, and they probably do get the short end of the stick sometimes, not having this same network of support,” says AFTM frontman Forrest Whitlark, who acknowledges that the program has helped the band tremendously. Still, he adds, “I think it’s good and healthy that everyone is helping each other.”

Whitlark says having a support base that includes both other students and professors has given the group the encouragement and advice it needed to grow since it started two years ago.

He also says that if someone is making good music, it ultimately doesn’t matter

what circles they are or aren’t a part of. “A lot of times, people are getting gigs based on the talent they have,” Whitlark says.

“There is so much talent in Athens.”

Scene politics aside, Barbe says there’s no denying the impact these bands have had on Athens. He says one of the program’s largest contributions has been the business it gives to local venues, as MBUS artists fill holes in schedules that may have otherwise been left empty.

“A lot of times when students book shows, they’re giving exposure [for] the

venues to an audience that might not have gone to those venues before,” Barbe says.

“They’re bridging a gap that’s enhancing the business of the venues.”

Troy Aubrey, the president of Foundry Entertainment and chair of AthFest’s booking committee, says this has been true at The Foundry, especially for the venue’s Two for Tuesday series, which features local, up-and-coming bands.

“We’ve seen a lot of younger artists within Music Business play that series, and a lot of those shows have been super successful,” Aubrey says. “I think a lot of the venues are getting a lot more shows earlier in the week with the amount of new bands that are coming up.”

Several other bands on this year’s AthFest lineup are affiliated with the program, including country singer Ashley Walls, folk artists Aspen Anonda and Daniel Hardin, singer-songwriter Sam Burchfield and alternative rock band Jester.

Aubrey says the inclusion of so many MBUS bands on the festival’s lineup was intentional, as one of AthFest’s goals this year was to draw a younger crowd. The event has long been known as a townie showcase, but the festival’s booking committee felt featuring younger bands would draw more UGA students back to town over the slow summer.

Overall, Aubrey says, the program is a boon to the Athens scene. “I definitely think that the program is instrumental in helping bands do better than they would have,” Aubrey says. “Most of the younger bands that we see doing well have something to do with the program, and the ones that aren’t normally don’t.”

After nearly a decade as the program’s director, Barbe says he couldn’t be happier for his students and former students who are playing AthFest.

“I’m totally proud of those guys, and everyone else who’s playing the fest, too,” Barbe says. “It’s cool to see the program really starting to have an impact. I’m proud of them.” f For the full AthFest schedule, see p. 9, and for performer descriptions, see p. 10.

AthFiesta: Athens Latin Hosts Festival Showcase For 12 years, Athens Latin has been a staple in the local community, presenting events centered on various aspects of Latinx culture, from music to food to dance and beyond. Gabriel Quintanilla, the group’s CEO, says the organization has made the Latinx community feel more welcome and supported in Athens, as well Orquesta MaCuba as exposing people from all backgrounds to new cultural traditions.

Throughout the year, Athens Latin puts together “100% Latin music parties” at places like Iron Factory, Hendershot’s, The Foundry, Jerzees and the Georgia Theatre featuring local Latin DJs, plus others from Atlanta and surrounding cities. Local and out-of-town bands also perform regularly, playing everything from salsa to bachata to rock en español, with dance performances serving as another major part of the shows.

Each year since 2015, Athens Latin has hosted an official AthFest showcase, with this year’s event taking place Saturday, June 22 at The Foundry. Atlanta group Orquesta MaCuba will headline, performing many styles of Latin music, including bachata, merengue, reggaeton and more.

Also performing is local DJ Harold G, spinning a wide variety of music.

“Athens Latin’s events promote socializing and the interaction of different cultures,” Quintanilla says. “My favorite thing is to see people from a wide variety of different cultures happy, enjoying and interacting with one another.” [Jessie Goodson]

This time around will be the group’s first show anywhere in a full year. With a crew this well-rested, you should expect nothing but the best.

Florida-born indie-rock band Black Kids returned in 2017 after an almost 10-year hiatus with a long-awaited sophomore album, Rookie. The Reggie Youngblood-led outfit shook loose the slings and arrows of outrageous, Pitchfork-induced misfortune to create a record chock full of unsurprisingly infectious pop gems. Their headlining set at Flicker on Friday is sure to induce ample dancing, so make sure your boyfriend is adequately prepared beforehand. [AB]

Kxng Blanco wrapped up high school just last year, and he’s already taking Athens hip hop by storm. The young emcee released his first official album, Crown, in December, after a come-up that included a much-talked-about Black History Month performance at his former alma mater.

The Kxng of the Youth extends his reign with the recently-released “RR Flow,” a shapeshifting track that flexes the rapper’s continued commitment to artistic growth and development. Catch him at the Flagpole Athens Music Awards show Thursday. [AB]

HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH: Once upon a time near Athens, there was a band named Luxury. Then, there was a band all around Athens all the time named Luxury.

Honestly, their story is seriously amazing, and that’s selling it really short. They played a peculiar form of muscular Southeastern U.S. Britpop, if you will. That’s just about all the story I know and/or remember, but that can be reconciled Thursday, June 20

at Ciné. That night will be the Athens premiere of the new documentary about the band, Parallel Love. Also of note, and not at all by coincidence, Luxury’s newest album, Trophies, came out last week. After the screening, there will be a Q&A with the director and band member Matt Hinton, as well as Chris Foley, Glenn Black, Jamey Bozeman and Athens writer and poet Alex Johns, who has a solid presence in the film.

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com ATHFEST ARTIST MARKET: If live musicians and dancing bodies aren’t enough visual stimulation, the AthFest Music and Arts Festival will host an artist market on Washington Street between Hull and Lumpkin streets, with over 50 vendors setting up shop. Both fine arts and crafts will be presented, with items ranging from paintings and drawings to photography, jewelry, clothing, sculpture, bath and body products, furniture and ceramics. Businesses to be on the look-out for include Jellykoe, Westwind Tie Dye, Cherokee Moon Mixology, Amanda Proctor Ceramics, Om Grown Wellness and Dark Moon Trading.

As a juried market, $600 in prizes will be awarded to top artists who catch the eyes of a panel of local judges. The artist market will be open Friday, June 21 from 5–10 p.m., Saturday, June 22 from 12–10 p.m. and Sunday, June 23 from 12:30–8 p.m.

ATHFEST THEME ARTIST: Every year, AthFest Educates chooses a different local artist from a pool of applicants to be the official theme artist of the AthFest Music and Arts Festival and AthHalf Half Marathon and 5K. The artist’s work is incorporated into all graphic design and branding, appearing on everything from billboards, promotional posters and advertisements to T-shirts, buttons and stage banners. This year’s theme artist is none other than Flagpole’s own ad and web designer, Anna LeBer. Finding a sweet spot for imagery that would appeal to a younger crowd, yet also be fun for the older generation

of attendees, LeBer decided to go with a playful theme influenced by ’90s nostalgia. Incorporating popular colors of the decade, like hot pink, orange, neon green and cyan, her loud illustrations of youthful faces seem to scream the words “AthFest 2019.”

“Recently, I’ve been getting a lot of inspiration from ’90s cartoon illustration style,” says LeBer. “This year’s AthFest logo was definitely inspired by the logo for the show ‘All That’—it used to be one of my favorites when I was a kid.

My work is also inspired by cartoonists like Edward Gorey and Charles Addams, and contemporary female artists like Eleanor Davis, Laura Callaghan and Lisa Hanawalt.”

LeBer’s illustration process typically begins with good old-fashioned brainstorming using pencil on paper.

Once she has an idea she’s ready to finalize, she traces the image into Adobe Illustrator, which offers greater adaptability and flexibility.

In addition to AthFest and AthHalf, Anna’s design work can be found on the T-shirts and illustrated cocktail menus at The Old Pal. Some of her artwork is currently available for sale at Atomic Vintage, and she will also be included in a group exhibition at the Lyndon House Arts Center this September.

FLAGPOLE MUSIC AWARDS ARTIST: Winning musicians at the annual Flagpole Athens Music Awards ceremony, held this Thursday evening at the Morton Theatre, will be given unique trophies that double as original pieces of art by Eli Saragoussi. A fairly new transplant from Denver, Saragoussi immediately caught my eye with both her three-dimensional, anthropomorphic felt animals that have popped up across town on gallery walls, as well as her doo-wop band, Baby Tony and the Teenies, in which she sings and plays bass.

“I’ve been creating art and playing music for most of my life,” says Saragoussi. “I believe they have always informed each other, but more than ever since I began playing in bands. For me, playing in a band is not only about the music—it’s about building an all-encompassing world with a specific aesthetic. I love designing posters, props, album art, etc. to fit the vibe of the music.”

Her playful, long-tongued dog trophies, which appear on the cover of Flagpole this week, are representative of her unusual style and choice of materials. Drawn to felt for its soft texture and saturated colors, she creates artwork that is approachable and friendly on first impression. Reinforced with masonite to be mounted on a wall, however, her stuffed-animal-like works keep a safe distance from the viewer. This, combined with details like amulets and perplexing expressions, establishes room to imagine your own narrative.

“I have only lived in Athens for a short time, but never before have I felt so uplifted by my peers,” she says. “The amount of encouragement I’ve received to pursue my dreams is unparalleled to any other place I’ve lived. This, I imagine, is why Athens pumps out so many uniquely talented artists and musicians—everyone is climbing the mountain together as a team.” f

Now, a Wolverine-less X-team of the aforementioned mutants, plus Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), are all that stand between evil aliens and humanity’s destruction.

Overall, Dark Phoenix has as many standout moments as previous series low Last Stand, and more than franchise nadir X-Men Origins: Wolverine. (The prevailing opinion, even amongst comic apologists? That movie stinks.) The climactic train fight, apparently reshot, is expectedly thrilling, and an earlier Jean Grey/Magneto showdown does not disappoint. Not much else happens, though, and little action plus a dispirited combination of X-Men and cast leave little to recommend, even with nothing much to vilify. Every one of these X-Men can be improved, though replacements for Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and a woefully underused Evan Peters have a thankless task ahead. The movie is also rather gloomy—tonal struggles have struck better X-movies than this—and feels longer than its surprising sub-two-hour runtime.

Thankfully, we assume Marvel will work its humorous-heart formula on an eventual, entertaining X-integration. Still, some angst is crucial to establish the X-Men as the MCU’s Anti-Avengers. Just maybe not as much teen spirit as Dark Phoenix.

Somebody needs to act old enough to fly the Blackbird, after all. f

My Judgy Co-worker ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Hi Bonita, I’m a black woman working in a corporate environment and cubicle farm. The other day, I was talking to my co-workers about a recent birthday present of spicy ranch dressing and all of the different ways I plan to enjoy it.

While I was talking about how I don’t really like chicken wings and instead plan on making little panini and dipping them into this delicious dressing, another black female co-worker came up to us, put her hands on my shoulders and said, “So white!” while laughing.

What the hell? Keep in mind that I am almost 40, and the offending co-worker is obviously older than 40. I only started this job a few weeks ago, and have felt so welcomed and comfortable around my colleagues up until this. FYI, we are primarily women of color, and very diverse in our backgrounds, which helped me feel at ease, but this exchange really threw a wrench in it all. To finish the story, I simply ignored her and continued with my food fantasy talk, as she walked away pretty quickly.

Since then, I’ve been pretty fucking sore with her. We typically volunteer to help each other with work duties on a daily basis, but I’ve been keeping a pretty good distance. I’d actually prefer to

address this with her directly, as this type of talk is something I’ve dealt with for most of my life as a reaction to the way that I talk, my education, musical preference and hobbies. I’m sick of this shit, and feel so disappointed in myself for never standing up to this stupidity from my own community.

Advice?

Not an Oreo Not an Oreo, My knee-jerk response to this is expletive-laden and would definitely get you fired, so we won’t go there. I’m a woman of color, too, and I grew up in the punk scene and was typically the only person of color at shows and fests until I reached my 20s.

I also know the pain of being judged by your own ethnic community, and it doubly sucks, because all of us are already being

measured against impossible standards by the status quo. Ostracizing each other for being our authentic selves only serves to further the prejudice and bias we already experience daily in American life.

It’s my opinion that people like your co-worker judge their own for “performing” whiteness as a way of rejecting culture that they have been told is off-limits to them their entire lives. Italian cuisine is for white people, as is rock and roll, as is wine tasting, as are a million other things that really don’t belong to anyone at this point in human history. Perhaps she’s envious of your culinary acumen, and it triggered memories of all the ways she denies herself in the name of cultural conformity, and she could only make herself feel better by insulting you.

If you confront her, I’m sure she’ll claim it was a joke, but hopefully she won’t double down and call you an Oreo to your face (in which case, you should immediately report her to HR). Whatever she might say, I support your decision to withhold your work friendship from her, and I encourage you to talk to her about this.

A real friend would never say that, anyway.

No matter how she feels about your blackness, she needs to understand that no one’s cultural expression needs her approval or her unasked-for opinion.

I don’t know where people get the idea that policing their own is helpful or supportive in any way, but I also suspect that folks like this don’t actually possess the intellectual or emotional depth to even care about being good to other people of color. I hope that a talk like this wouldn’t have her thinking that you’re “uppity” or too smart for your own good, but it’s always a risk that she won’t take you seriously or will try to minimize her role in this. But you are right to be offended, and she deserves to know how insulting, hurtful and just plain inappropriate her comment was. Go off, sis. f

A Passion for Justice DONALD E. WILKES, JR. PUSHED THE LAW TO STAND UP TO POWER

Wilkes Jr. has written in Flagpole over the years, mostly online at flagpole.com. “Eugene” sent in this piece just as he was leaving town week before last for a trip to Washington state, where he died suddenly from an apparent heart attack.

I worked closely with Eugene throughout the years, at Flagpole and at the Athens Observer before that. We saw each other from time to time, but mainly ours was a collaboration by email and by telephone.

After I got out of the Athens Observer, Eugene continued to publish his articles there, and one or two in the Athens BannerHerald, while keeping up his prolific scholarly writing.

A couple of years after I signed on with Flagpole, the Edward Wright incident occurred, in which a mentally disturbed black man was running naked in East Athens and was killed by police officers. That terrible shooting upset the community, especially after the officers were cleared of any wrongdoing. That was more than Eugene Wilkes could stand, and he wrote several articles in Flagpole questioning what he saw as a police cover-up.

Since that time in 1996, Eugene continued until his death, in Flagpole as elsewhere, to question those in authority on a variety of subjects. He has consistently opposed the use by police of taser shock-weapons and had for a number of years published a listing of every death in this country by police tasering.

By far, though, Eugene’s longest-running preoccupation was the assasination of President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963. For the last 20 years, Eugene wrote at least an annual column, generally reviewing books that questioned the official account of Kennedy’s Donald E.
