Streetlights and Sustainability PLUS, A NEW BOE PRESIDENT AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

By Blake Aued and John Huie news@flagpole.com Athens-Clarke property owners would pay a separate fee on tax bills to fund streetlights under a proposal by the Transportation and Public Works Department, which currently spends a quarter of its budget on streetlight costs.

Streetlights are not owned by the government, but by Georgia Power or an EMC, which charge the government to power and maintain them. Those rates are set by the state Public Service Commission, and although Georgia Power has been replacing its old-style streetlights with more efficient LEDs, the utility has not reduced its charges to local government—nor is it likely to, according to a 2016 AJC article saying that Georgia Power has no motivation to lower costs to cities, nor to provide innovative streetlights that can change color, dim in the wee hours or be brightened by police when needed. At a work session last week, commissioners asked for more information about the possibility of ACC owning its own streetlights.

They were also surprised to learn that Georgia Power had been charging ACC for about a dozen streetlights that turned out to be located in downtown Atlanta—and “we’re continuing to ask for” a refund, according to Stephen Bailey of TPW. ACC’s 7,700 streetlights cost the county nearly $1 million a year.

Property owners would pay about $14 per land parcel each year for general street lighting in the county, which is mostly focused on road safety, plus about $26 if the parcel is also served by a nearby street light. “You could actually charge based on each person’s lighting benefits,” Bailey said.

At present there are some 20 outstanding requests for new streetlights, but no budget to cover them.

Implementing the charges would enable ACC to hire someone to more closely monitor streetlight bills and requests, plus a second person to administer the billing program. Most commissioners seemed open to the proposal, but others advised caution— especially since the county’s stormwater fees have been controversial. “I think we’re opening up a tremendous Pandora’s box here,” said Commissioner Jerry NeSmith.

“To charge somebody a dollar a month for streetlights when they don’t have any will make the stormwater confusion look easy.”

Through innovations like piping methane from rotting underground areas of the landfill and installing solar arrays, ACC’s government produces electricity equivalent to 15% of its entire energy consumption, Sustainability Officer Andrew Saunders told commissioners at the May 14 work session.

The county has committed to relying less on unsustainable energy sources, and “solar is becoming the most cost-competitive,” he said. Solar arrays have been installed at the Multimodal Center, the jail, the Streets and Drainage facility on Spring Valley Road and an extensive one at the Cedar Creek sewage treatment plant.

Harvesting energy locally not only reduces greenhouse gases, Saunders said, but keeps jobs and money in Athens, and can reduce the cost burden on households who may have to choose between paying for heat or paying for rent or food. “This community is sending an awful lot of dollars out of the community for energy,” Saunders said. Mayor Kelly Girtz has signed the Sierra Club pledge to “aim for” wholly sustainable energy sources. But the most efficient way to sustainability is not through generating energy, but by reducing energy use, Saunders said. “It’s much more cost-effective.”

sumption is electricity; the rest is mostly gasoline and diesel. And three-fourths of that electricity goes for one purpose: sewage treatment. A $1 million, 5-acre solar array at the Cedar Creek treatment plant covers half of that facility’s energy use, and should repay its costs over 14 years, Saunders told Flagpole. Georgia’s grid electricity is also produced more cleanly today than even a decade ago— cheaper natural gas (produced by fracking) has largely replaced burning coal, while about a third is produced by nuclear reactors, and significant inroads are beginning to be made by solar. About 9% of Georgia’s electricity comes from renewables, either solar or hydroelectric.

About 15% of ACC government’s energy use now comes from its own sustainable sources, and the push for efficiency has reduced overall energy use by over 5% so far. Most lights in county buildings have already been replaced with LEDs, and heating and cooling systems are being upgraded for efficiency. ACC has 12 hybrid electric buses and 38 hybrid cars, and while electric cars look attractive, the batteries are not expected to maintain their full power for the county’s 15-year replacement cycle, Saunders said. But “it’s a very dynamic market” where things change fast. Solar is now 80% cheaper than it was five years ago.

“Everything seems to be just right” for a major airline to connect to the Athens airport, Airport Director Mike Mathews told commissioners. That’s been the hope for many years. The last scheduled service (to Nashville) ended in 2016 with too few passengers to qualify for a federal subsidy.

An airline connection is viewed as a big plus for attracting industry, and terminal and runway improvements have augmented the effort to attract a commercial airline.

Mathews is talking to one—he wouldn’t say which—anticipating “maybe a 50-seater going to a major hub. We really think we have a good chance.”

While there are times when City Hall’s commission chamber is packed, and people line up to speak, it’s also not unusual for commission meetings to play to near-empty rooms. But that doesn’t mean nobody’s watching. Since 2002, most commission meetings have been televised on local and

UGA cable (broadcast live, then repeated several times), and are also streamed live on YouTube. The broadcasts are surprisingly popular.

Unobtrusive cameras on the walls capture the parliamentary action, with titles added on the fly by a crew down the hall, making for a professional production. And people do watch: This month’s voting meeting has had over 200 video replays, plus uncounted watches on cable. The December Parade of Lights video had 1,200 views.

Gantt Chosen as BOE President The Clarke County Board of Education chose LaKeisha Gantt as its next president at a called meeting last week.

Gantt, who represents District 7, replaces District 4 representative Jared Bybee, who is resigning from the board at the end of the month because his wife, UGA law professor Mehrsa Baradaran, has taken a job in California. Gantt will serve out the remainder of Bybee’s term as president, which runs through the end of the year. Much as it did earlier this year to fill Vernon Payne’s District 2 seat, the board will choose a new District 4 member once Bybee resigns.

Gantt is a psychologist and former CCSD employee who now runs a small private practice and teaches at Piedmont College.

She has four children in local public schools.

She is relatively new to the board, having been elected in 2018.

The board chose Gantt 6–3 over District 3 representative Linda Davis, who remains the vice president.

Board members voted by paper ballot, and initially only the final result, not the vote tally or who voted for whom, was announced to the public. Through an open records request, Flagpole learned that Greg Davis, Frances Berry, Kara Dyckman, John Knox and Tawana Mattox voted for Gantt,

while former president Charles Worthy and Bybee voted for Linda Davis. Both candidates voted for themselves.

Gantt said she sees her role as building trust and rapport among board members and the superintendent, and easing some of the tension that has built up in the community recently over issues like AVID.

CCSD Parents Raise Discipline Concerns Meanwhile, parents are calling on CCSD to revise its discipline policies after at least two recent altercations resulted in students’ arrest and, in one case, a child being pepper-sprayed.

Mokah-Jasmine Johnson, president of the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement, told the board earlier this month that her daughter had been suspended and charged with disorderly conduct. Her daughter

snapped after being bullied by other students, she said, and no one did anything about it even though she had warned the school counselor.

Johnson hosted a “school-to-prison pipeline” meeting last week, where a woman only identified as “Ms. Jackson” spoke about how her daughter was arrested and booked into jail after a fight.

Footage of the actual fight was not released due to privacy laws, but security-camera video of the aftermath shows a girl backing away toward a door, and a police officer pursuing her and then spraying something in her face. The officer’s body camera was not turned on at the time. After being sprayed, the girl was taken to jail, where she spent several hours. She is epileptic and had multiple seizures that night, her mother said.

Jackson said that when she met with police and administrators, she called the officer a “coward,” and the officer told her she is “retarded.” Jackson said that the officer had a longstanding dislike for her daughter. She also wondered why the other girl in the fight was allowed to turn herself in.

Other parents in the room, however, defended the officer and said her actions were out of character.

Johnson said the point was not to berate a particular officer or to remove officers from schools, but to get the school district to re-examine its policies. “I’m not defending any altercation, but people need to understand, an officer can arrest your child, any child,” she said, and children should not have a criminal record because they got into a fight at school.

Concerned parents also took some sort of action at Whit Davis Elementary School last week, where one said discipline is “spiraling out of control.” Flagpole received several reports that parents were demanding that a second-grader who had exhibited “dangerous behavior” be removed from the classroom. Measles Makes a Comeback ANTI-VAXXER MOVEMENT SHOWS LACK OF RESPECT FOR SCIENCE

For those of us who were schoolchildren during the 1950s, lining up for vaccinations against childhood diseases was much scarier than the “duck and cover” drills that had us hiding under our desks in anticipation of a nuclear attack from Russian bogeymen.

One injection that even we kids applauded was the polio vaccine that debuted in 1954 and was in widespread use the next year. In the early 1950s, it was common to see polio victims—both children and adults—with braces on their legs or in wheelchairs. A U.S. polio epidemic in 1952 caused almost 58,000 cases of the disease, resulting in more than 3,000 deaths and more than 21,000 Americans suffering disability—including children that we saw in school and on the playground every day.

Now, the good Dr. Salk would be sad to see measles making a comeback, as some parents resist vaccinating their children.

In a May 13 fortune.com article, Sy Mukherjee writes that the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta reported that, as of May 10, there were 839 cases of measles across 23 American states—an increase of 75 cases over the previous week. So far in 2019, the article continues, there are more than 10 times as many measles cases across America as there were in 2010, when the disease had been nearly eradicated in this country, and most of today’s infections of measles are among the unvaccinated.

When Jonas Salk developed the polio vaccine, he was rightfully hailed as a medical hero whose research led to a conquest over a disease that had struck fear into the hearts of both children and their parents and that had afflicted an American president who had called for “freedom from fear.” Saying that this nation’s health care was a “moral commitment,” Salk called for mandatory vaccination against polio, and America agreed. When we schoolkids were given our “polio shots” some 65 years ago, we winced at the needle, as always, but we appreciated being protected from a dreaded disease that had affected classmates, teachers, friends and family members. In the dark days of the 1950s, Salk and his team scored a victory over fear.

Science was a wonder in the postwar America of the ’50s, and advances in public health were all a part of that magic. After Russia stunned the world with its Earthorbiting Sputnik satellite in 1957, science gained new emphasis in America’s public schools, and general science courses taught millions of youngsters the basic tenets of the scientific method of observation, measurement, experimentation and testing that has been used as a scientific standard since the days of Galileo and Isaac Newton in the 17th Century. Salk fit right in at a time when science was revered and respected by

Still, even in an age of science, there are many who fear vaccines more than they fear potentially deadly or debilitating diseases. Such “anti-vaxxers” run the political gamut from right to left, and they come from religious groups including conservative sects of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The brother, sister and niece of liberal activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently wrote an article in Politico saying that he is right about preserving the environment but “tragically wrong about vaccines.”

Today, it is fashionable in some circles to sneer at science, including medical science. Astronomer Carl Sagan scorned such nationwide scientific illiteracy as trouble for an America whose citizens are more and more dependent on science and technology.

He called for science and citizenship to be respected by all Americans. “Sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces,” he warned more than two decades ago. “Our species needs and deserves a citizenry with minds wide awake and a basic understanding of how the world works… The dangers of not thinking clearly are much greater now than ever before.” f

So You Want an Organic Garden THE CHALLENGES—AND REWARDS—OF GROWING ORGANICALLY

By Dan Jackson news@flagpole.com Athens provides a robust commercial market for organic produce, and many Athens consumers seek out high-quality, organically grown fruits and vegetables at farmers markets and grocery stores—even Walmart.

Yet much of this produce comes from farms far from Athens and its clay soils, brutally hot summers and high humidity.

The big organic producers mainly enjoy the rich soils and drier climate in the West.

California boasts nearly 700,000 acres of organic croplands, dwarfing the fewer than 8,000 acres in Georgia, according to EcoWatch, an environmental news site.

Barss depends heavily on cover crops, many of which absorb nitrogen from the air into the soil, where it is processed by bacteria and made readily available to plants.

The raw plant material in the soil provides food to the colonies of microorganisms, which then break down and decompose the organic material that eventually becomes food for plants.

UGA College of Agriculture professor David Berle, who teaches classes in organic gardening and works with students at the UGArden, says he uses taller cover crops in the summer for weed suppression.

I Wanna Be Your Dog CHANGES COMING TO THE ACC ANIMAL SHELTER

November sales tax referendum would bring in almost $600,000 for new dog kennels and other improvements at the Athens-Clarke County animal shelter.

But that’s only part of a new focus for ACC Animal Control.

“Over the 13 years I’ve been here, the mission of Animal Control has shifted,” says Central Services Director David Fluck, whose department includes Animal Control.

“It used to be ‘control,’ and the shelter was an adjunct to that. Now, the shelter is at the forefront.”

The $559,000 project is a drop in the bucket of the 10-year, $278 million SPLOST, a 1 percent sales tax for capital projects like new buildings and infrastructure. It received dozens of positive comments from the public and easily cleared the bar for recommendation by the citizens committee. “It got a really positive

With the focus changing from law enforcement to helping animals and educating pet owners, last year the ACC Mayor and Commission funded a parttime volunteer coordinator and a second supervisor (one now oversees the shelter, and the other animal control officers). A new administrator, Michelle Carrigg, took over in January, with former administrator Patrick Rives moving to an analyst position in Central Services.

The division is also promoting an animal caretaker, Juan de Leon, to be its first Spanish-speaking animal control officer. “A lot of people don’t know the resources they have at their disposal” because of a language barrier, de Leon says.

A 2011 SPLOST project, completed in 2016, added six new kennels, several dog runs, cat cages, cat and puppy interaction areas, a food prep room, a quarantine room and office space to the shelter, located at 125 Buddy Christian Way near the airport.

Some facilities, though, remain subpar.

A visit last year by a state Department of Agriculture inspector found problems with the shelter’s 24 older kennels, which were constructed about 30 years ago. According to a presentation Fluck made Feb. 13 to the SPLOST Citizens Advisory Committee—a 22-member board that recommended projects to the mayor and commission—concrete blocks in the 30-year-old kennels are cracking, and cleaning chemicals are eroding the chain-link fence. Animal Control patched up those problems for the time being, but dogs are still exposed to cleaning

response, because people love animals,” Fluck says. “That’s what it’s about.”

The animal shelter is heavily dependent on volunteers, and their suggestions have driven many of the changes there, according to Fluck. For example, the animal rescue group Best Friends—which is affiliated with Athenspets, the group that runs Animal Control’s adoption website and contributes the Adopt Me feature to Flagpole—is conducting an assessment of the shelter’s operations. Dogs’ records are now color-coded based on how much experience a volunteer needs to be able to handle them. Some volunteers have started taking shelter dogs for day-long “doggy day out field trips.” Animal Control also recently won a $5,000 grant for a fledgling foster-care program.

Fluck says the plans don’t call for expanding the animal shelter because, no matter how big it is, it will fill up. When it gets full, and dogs are in danger of being euthanized, rescue groups usually swoop in to relieve the overcrowding. ACC euthanized fewer than 10 “adoptable” dogs last year, Fluck says—a figure that doesn’t include dogs that were too sick or unsocialized to find new homes. But Animal Control is about to start tracking all euthanizations, a practice that’s more in line with animal rights groups’ recommendations.

Fluck recalls one volunteer who wouldn’t let anyone leave without adopting a dog— and if they took home one, she’d insist on two. “We called her The Adoptinator,” he says. The hope is that a more attractive kennel area will expedite adoptions, too. f

very Saturday morning, volunteers gather in Winterville to spend the day working at Sweet Olive Farm, a nonprofit animal rescue.

The farm has been in operation since June 2010, when co-founder Kat Howkins decided her Fulton County home was not big enough to house her eight dogs and a pot-bellied pig, so she rented the property the farm now lies on. Over the last nine years, Sweet Olive Farm has expanded to provide sanctuary for over 100 rescued farm animals. In 2015, Howkins registered Sweet Olive Farm as a nonprofit.

“They say [the] fourth year is the charm,” Howkins says. “We are totally volunteer-run now. That was kind of my dream. I was paying a couple of college students to work here, but I decided to just be straight-up volunteer.”

This shift was possible through the work of regulars and several organizations from the greater Athens community who come

Sanders and Howkins get help from other regulars, like Lily Heidger, a homeschooled high-school senior from Dacula who comes to the farm two to three times a week. In addition to manual labor, Heidger also helps run Sweet Olive Farm’s social media and digital outreach efforts. Heidger recently registered Sweet Olive Farm on Patreon, a membership service that allows supporters to give monthly donations of any size in exchange for exclusive perks.

“We have almost $100 a month coming in from Patreon,” Heidger says. “It’s just getting people out here, really. When you tell people on social media to donate, it’s really easy to scroll past it. But when you tell them in person, they see what it’s all going towards.”

Cheyenne Hardy, a 10-year-old at Barnett Shoals Elementary, works on the farm with her parents every weekend.

“I was wanting to volunteer at an animal shelter over the summer to keep busy,” Hardy says. “My dad found this place, and I really like hanging out with the animals.

When I feed them, I get to walk around the whole farm and see them all.”

Many volunteers say the animal sanctuary also provides them a space to escape and reconnect with nature. Caroline Caden is a UGA student majoring in theater and nonprofit management who regularly

Janie Sanders is a former dietician from Colbert who discovered Sweet Olive Farm shortly before retiring. She now comes to the farm every day.

“I’m so fortunate to be able to have this place so close to me,” Sanders says. “I usually spend about four hours a day here. I love animals. Nothing is too much trouble when it comes to an animal. Kat taught me the ropes, and I just get more out of it than I give.”

The farm is also supported by businesses such as Aldi, and part of Sanders’ responsibilities include picking up produce past its sell date from the grocery chain and bringing it to the farm to feed the animals.

Much of the farm’s monthly expenses come from feed, so contributions like Aldi’s help Howkins rescue as many animals as possible.

Farm shirts with “Farm Hand” on the back to help lead students from University of Georgia organization Speak Out for Species, or S.O.S., in feeding the animals and working on various projects around the farm.

Lla Anderson, a second-year UGA theater and philosophy major, is a member of S.O.S. “Volunteering at Sweet Olive Farm is not volunteering in the traditional sense of the word,” Anderson says. “Sure, some jobs require cleaning a pig pen or collecting wood to start a fire to clear the field, but it never feels like work. The volunteers and owners are always so warm and welcoming—you truly feel like a part of the family when you’re there.”

This warm and welcoming vibe brings volunteers of all ages. Howkins even allows children to work on the farm with parent supervision. “Being part of the community

attends “Baaa-maste Yoga,” one of the farm’s fundraising events, where Howkins opens up the barn for patrons to do yoga surrounded by animals.

“Sweet Olive Farm is a wonderful place for me to press pause,” Caden says. “Kat Howkins does an incredible job taking care of the animals she rescues, and kindly teaches volunteers how to pitch in a hand.

Doing animal yoga and donating to their cause is one of my favorite things to do in Athens.”

Howkins says what makes her happiest about the success of her farm is the vast network of like-minded people she has met.

“It’s really stressful, but then it starts coming together,” Howkins says. “I get to meet all these new people, and it’s this really great thing. It’s hard, but it’s so worth it. If you do something you really care about, it’s worth it.” f

Critter Communication ATHENS WOMAN SPECIALIZES IN PET TELEPATHY

Flemming is called in when an animal has a problem that couldn’t be solved through traditional means. She picks up information from animals without touching them. Instead, she “sees” the messages that the animal wants to communicate. Often, she says, an animal will tell her of a physical or emotional ailment from which it is suffering.

She says she will often see images or hear certain words from animals, even across long distances. In fact, she recounts one instance in which a horse told her it was having pain in its hooves, and after a trip to the veterinarian, the owners found SAVANNAH COLE

umans have wondered for centuries what it would be like to be able to know what their pets are thinking.

For open-minded Athenians, this wish may become a reality. Local woman Theresa Flemming says that not only can she communicate with animals, but she wants to teach others to do so, as well.

An educator by trade, Flemming calls herself a “pet telepath,” or someone who can communicate with animals on a nonverbal plane. She says she began to experience such contact with animals when she was a teenager, and what she heard from them was alarming.

“It was very difficult as a 15-year-old to be able to hear from animals in certain situations,” Flemming says. “I love to do this, but the pain is incredible.”

Flemming says the reason for most animals’ pain is largely due to human interference in their lives. She says she constantly receives messages from animals asking for help or attempting to communicate their struggles.

Flemming acknowledges that her unique skill is not something that is wholly accepted in society. Yet she insists that, although telepathy is considered something that is supernatural or otherworldly, it is a practice that anyone can enjoy, once they are taught.

It is for this reason that she has decided to teach others how to communicate with animals in a safe, non-threatening way. She says that to teach someone the way of clairvoyance can take as little as three hours, but to do it safely can take up to a year of practice and teaching.

Done correctly, Flemming says, sending and receiving messages from animals is something everyone can learn. “I’m very passionate about the fact that we are all capable of functioning on that level,” Flemming says.

Flemming says one effect of a telepathic exchange is that one is able to see from an animal’s perspective. She says that after someone is trained, his or her senses will learn to “tune in” when something is important.

For her, she says, this happens fairly often. Sometimes, the animal’s problem is physical and easily fixed. Other times, it is emotional and may require several visits or sessions to reverse any damage that has been done.

“Often, an animal will mirror its human, meaning that it will pick up on the stress from the humans that live with it,” Flemming says. “When you’re in that healing state, you can sometimes make changes very quickly.”

Flemming says there are around 60 books that have been written on this specific style of animal telepathy, and she has also begun to work on her own. Her goal is for the people of Athens to understand that communicating with animals does not have to be strange or intimidating.

“Not everyone will understand,” Flemming says of her specialty. “But everyone can benefit.” f

Meow-maste KITTY YOGA SUPPORTS THE FOSTER CATS OF ATHENS

ach Tuesday during the summer, local folks of all ages can be found at Memorial Park doing as much or as little yoga as they’d like, all while surrounded by kittens and cats. The animals climb on and around people doing various yoga poses, interacting with them throughout the one-hour session. These adoptable creatures have been known to steal hearts and elicit laughter, all while encouraging people to exercise.

The Circle of Friends Animal Society works to rescue and care for animals of all kinds in the Athens community. Two years ago, the group began Kitty Yoga and found a home at Memorial Park. Once a week each summer in the park’s multipurpose room, cat foster parents from Circle of Friends bring their furry friends to yoga. A small donation is collected at the beginning, and everyone stretches and relaxes among yoga mats, kittens, toys and likeminded pet lovers.

Athens-based volunteer yoga instructor Brittany Barnes, a well-versed yogi and longtime cat lover, was thrilled to hear

“My favorite part is that this is a very approachable yoga for people, and they have a lot of fun,” Barnes says.

Not only does Kitty Yoga raise money and awareness for the foster cats of Athens, but it also does a lot to increase the ani-

mals’ social skills and give some peace to the yoga-goers.

Participation in Kitty Yoga has been steadily increasing, according to Tawny Waltz, one of the group’s cat coordinators. Last month, they had their largest class yet, with about 42 attendees.

“Getting our name out there and getting people to know what we do and get behind our mission is really great, and this has been a good outreach for that,” Waltz says.

The foster group pulls cats from all kinds of dangerous situations, especially high-kill shelters. It is also one of the only rescue groups that chooses to take cats that may

be considered “less adoptable” or otherwise have special needs. Waltz stresses that any donation helps, as it only takes $1.50 to cover a vaccination for a cat.

As it turns out, the cat-yoga connection runs deeper than one might expect. In fact, that connection is elemental. “The sound of ‘om’ is a vibration that’s the same frequency as a cat’s purr,” explains Barnes. f

Either way, by the time you’re this deep into listening, it makes no difference at all. While this Goddess Complex definitely doesn’t cover the entire breadth of Powers’ work, it’s a fine document of what she’s an honestly killer and unnamed 16-minute doing right this moment, and a pretty good track. ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Bonita, I have a pretty healthy sex life, but for the past few months, I’ve been laying low and getting ready for summer. Getting my beach body ready and all that. Taking time to be single and happy and feeling sure of myself, now that summer is pretty much here. I’ve never purposely taken a break like that before, but I really enjoyed the alone time. I got to think hard about what dating and sex mean to me (and what I want them to mean to me in the future), be sure I’m not doing things because of social expectations, and make sure I’m living for myself.

Now, I am feeling good and looking great and ready to hit the ground running. I wanna get laid and go on dates! But… I feel weird! I don’t know. I was loving this single thing, but when I go out and try to pick up guys, my heart doesn’t feel into it. Trust me, I am definitely horny and desiring company, but when I’m in the moment, all I can think about is going home to Netflix and chill by myself.

I prefer OkCupid myself, and during the summer, I find the pickings to be older, more serious and less student-y. But I have to admit, the best boo I’ve had so far in Athens was an undergrad math major whom I met on an app, so never judge a book by its cover. (You’re a great dude, Sean! Email me.)

Speaking of old flames, there’s no harm in reconnecting with someone whom you were really digging for a while, as long as everything ended copacetically. You don’t wanna send a “wyd” text just to get a paragraph-long response about your audacity.

Do what you like, but I certainly don’t recommend trying it with someone who you know has any sort of hard or soft feelings towards you, especially if you’re just trying to get laid. That’s rude!

But seriously, don’t think of this as a predicament. You took some “me” time, and your evening routines changed, and I’m sure your overall lifestyle has shifted somewhat.

You like being at home—so what? You’d rather she-bop than roll the dice in bed—good! These tendencies are flying in the face of your stated desires to date and bang, but everything is fine, as long as you’re being true to yourself.

You don’t “have to” go out and have sex just because you thought about doing that earlier in the day. You’re allowed to change your mind and your plans, even if you’re mid-coitus with the perfect partner. One of these days, you will most certainly follow through, but I don’t see this as a problem that needs fixing. How can you enjoy something if your mind isn’t present and you’d rather be alone? If you wanna go home in the middle of flirting and binge-watch “The Crown,” do it. That’s just as valid as being the lettuce in a poly couple’s sandwich.

THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE (NR) Nearly 30 years in the making, Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of Cervantes’ Don Quixote should please the filmmaker’s fans without winning him any new ones. Toby (Adam Driver), a disillusioned ad man, runs off with Javier (Jonathan Pryce), the Spanish shoemaker he turned into Quixote for his student film. After a series of meandering quests, this knight errant and his Sancho Panza run into Angelica (Joana Ribeiro), the young Spanish villager Toby left with starry-eyed dreams and the abusive reality of a Russian vodka magnate (Jordi Molla). Like the chivalric literary hero himself, Toby sees Angelica as his Dulcinea waiting to be rescued.

Even with 30 years to work on the script, Gilliam’s film feels like an unearthed relic from the ’90s, despite its post-9/11 critique of Europe’s relationship with Muslim immigrants, as well as a Trump joke. Ultimately, the film’s famously troubled production makes seeing the final product after years in development hell more monumental than its predictable plotting, no matter how well Driver and Pryce pull off what can only be called minor Gilliam quirkiness. If nothing else, at least the delay saved us from Johnny Depp’s Toby. f

OH, WAIT A MINUTE: DOES ANY OF THIS APPLY RIGHT HERE IN GEORGIA?

This is who we are. We are the state that just told rape victims they have to carry their rape babies to term. We are the state that just told preteen girls that they have to carry their incest babies to term.

This is who we are. Stop telling me otherwise. Please.

I’m sick of hearing that “Alabama is better than this.” Or that “the good people of Alabama won’t stand for this.” It’s not, and they do. All the time.

It’s time to face the facts. It’s not the legislature. It’s not the governor. It’s not Alabama’s politicians. It’s the voters. The people. They’re the problem in this state.

Every year, these conservative politicians roll into Montgomery and do incredibly embarrassing things. They push racist bills and insane gun legislation. They deny the rights of gay and transgender people. They suck money away from education and into their own pockets. And when election time rolls around, the voters send them all right back to do it all over again.

Mostly because those politicians promise to do that embarrassing nonsense—to keep the liberals away from your guns, to put the “thugs” in their place, to keep the gays away from your daughter in the public bathrooms and to put your money to work for the state.

And always, always, always to protect the life of the unborn. (To hell with the born, of course.)

The people of Alabama line up to vote for them.

And why not? Isn’t life here grand for the working class? Don’t we have some of the lowest wages in the nation? Don’t we have some of the worst schools? Don’t we

Don’t we have some of the worst infrastructure? Don’t we have some of the worst pollution?

You’d think that after 150 years of basing their votes on religion and hate instead of self-interest, some of those voters would take a look around. That large groups would get tired of being played for absolute fools by some of the worst con men to walk the planet. But they never, ever do.

Last November, in the midterms, I pointed out that Republican candidates literally had no plans to govern. I was specific. I directed everyone to their websites and social media, quoted them from debates, and then I compared them to their Democratic counterparts.

Didn’t matter. Because that’s not what the majority of the people in this state care about. They don’t care about what’s right or who can best solve the state’s problems.

They care about their team, and about what their friends and neighbors might think of them if they suddenly began thinking for themselves.

In any other context, if I told the voters of this state that a man was preventing a 12-year-old from aborting the baby fathered by her uncle, they would be angry at that man. But put it in the context of politics, and they’re lining up to vote for the goober.

And then, just after the awful thing happens again, there will be another line of people proclaiming that Alabamians are better than this.

I’m begging you to stop it and take a look around.

In the past few years, when they weren’t being sent to prison for one felony or another, Alabama Republicans have attacked Hispanics, blacks, gays, blacks, transgender people, blacks, teachers, anyone who practices a religion other than Christianity, and blacks.

And now, girls and women.

Their hateful bills have been ripped to shreds by federal courts, and they have managed to drive away potential businesses looking to relocate to Alabama. Not to mention, the poor management of this state has deterred our best and brightest from sticking around, and has driven a number of businesses out of the state.

All of that has not cost Republicans a single vote in this state. In fact, in those midterms I spoke about, the Republicans without a plan—running on nothing but hate and religion—gained seats in the Alabama Legislature.

Stop telling me we’re better than this.

We’re not. f
