A Sustainable Athens GROUP PUSHES FOR 100 PERCENT RENEWABLE ENERGY, AND MORE NEWS

By Blake Aued news@flagpole.com When it comes to climate change, if the federal government won’t do something about it, then, kind of like Thanos, we have to do it ourselves.

Not by killing off half the population, of course (although the big purple guy did have a point—that would go a long way toward solving the problem). A new group called 100% Athens, which includes members of Athens for Everyone and the Georgia Climate Change Coalition, is pushing the Athens-Clarke County government to commit to ensuring all of the electricity consumed in Athens comes from clean, renewable sources.

“Paris is a really, really good first step, but it is not enough,” Ted Terry, director of the Georgia chapter of the Sierra Club, said at a recent forum, referring to the climate accords that President Trump pulled out of earlier this year. “We have to do more.”

The forum, held at the ACC library Dec. 16, drew about 50 people, including Mayorelect Kelly Girtz, commissioners Mariah Parker and Melissa Link, and commissioners-elect Patrick Davenport, Tim Denson and Ovita Thornton.

One hundred cities with a total population of 40 million have already set a similar goal, according to Terry, and they could get three quarters of the way to the Paris benchmarks on their own. A few have already achieved it, including Burlington, VT and Aspen, CO. But those cities have their own municipal electric utilities.

Complicating matters for Athens, most of our electricity comes from Georgia Power, a private company that’s regulated by the state. Achieving the 100 percent renewable goal will require working with Georgia Power and the Public Service Commission, and Georgia Power has been reluctant to add much solar to its portfolio, despite the urging of some PSC members, including Winterville’s Tim Echols.

“I think solar is clearly the technology we have really figured out and nailed in this state,” said Jennette Gayer, executive director of Environment Georgia. It’s not enough, though—she envisions solar as being about 25 percent of the mix, with another 25 percent coming from offshore wind farms and 50 percent from energy conservation.

Currently, most of Georgia’s electricity comes from burning natural gas, with some from coal, some from nuclear and a tiny amount from solar. “We’ve got to stop burning stuff,” Terry said. “It’s as simple as that.”

Atlanta recently passed a resolution setting a goal of 100 percent clean and renewable energy by 2035, but it can only reach 65 percent of that goal locally. The other 35 percent would come by purchasing clean energy credits from solar or wind farms outside the city.

In Athens, some efforts are already underway. As part of a SPLOST 2011 project, ACC has installed solar panels on six government buildings, including a 500-kilowatt array at a wastewater treatment plant, and is conducting energy audits, buying hybrid vehicles and replacing old light bulbs with LEDs, ACC Sustainability Officer Andrew Saunders said.

A proposed $72 million judicial center could be considered a sustainability project as well, Girtz added, because it would allow the county to renovate the courthouse and move offices out of old and inefficient buildings. Girtz also floated the idea of partnering with rural counties like Oglethorpe on solar farms. He also said he wants to add to the city’s tree canopy. And the community will face “hard choices” about land use— becoming denser means fewer resources consumed.

100% Athens has submitted a request for $17 million for environmental sustainability in SPLOST 2020, which will go before voters next November. That money could be used to add more solar panels around town, for new and more efficient HVACs, electric vehicles or insulating buildings.

Affordability will be an issue for low-income and middle-class homeowners, as upgrading appliances and adding insulation is expensive. Terry said the PSC is considering a “pay as you save” pilot program in Savannah, where Georgia Power would front homeowners the money for improvements, then take a portion of the energy savings to pay back the debt.

The result of going 100 percent renewable, Gayer said, would be not only cleaner air and a cooler climate, but more jobs.

Georgia sends $22 billion a year out of state for energy, she said. Solar and energy efficiency create twice as many jobs as fossil fuels, and the jobs are in Georgia, not in mining states. “If you are installing solar panels on rooftops in Georgia, you are creating local jobs,” Gayer said.

County School District to reduce class sizes, but local school officials are hoping for even more help during the 2019 legislative session, which starts in January.

On the campaign trail, Gov.-elect Brian Kemp promised to give teachers $5,000 raises. Both of Athens’ state senators, Bill Cowsert and Frank Ginn, said during a meeting with CCSD’s government relations committee that they expect Kemp to keep his word, although it remains to be seen if budget writers in the legislature will agree.

Even if the raise does come through, it will bring up equity issues local school districts will have to grapple with, according to Claire Suggs, chief of community engagement and strategic partnerships. For example, about 100 CCSD teachers aren’t covered under Quality Basic Education, the state funding formula, so the district would have to spend $1.4 million in local property-tax revenue to extend raises and benefits to those teachers, Suggs said. And that doesn’t even count central office staff, parapros, bus drivers, cafeteria workers or custodians.

Rising health-care costs and contributions to the Teacher Retirement System are growing burdens as well, Chief Financial Officer Larry Hammel said. Board members Greg Davis and Charles Worthy underscored the importance of TRS, saying generous retirement benefits draw teachers to Georgia despite subpar pay and could help alleviate a teacher shortage if it’s shored up.

CCSD staff and school board members also asked legislators to tie QBE to inflation and insert something into the formula that takes poverty into account. In response, Cowsert asked what should be cut. “It’s a big ask,” he said, noting that past efforts to “modernize” QBE have ended in stalemates.

“It’s a heavy lift.”

Ginn had questions about why so many CCSD students—8.7 percent—are classified as special needs. (The answer was that rural districts don’t provide enough services, so parents of special-needs students move to Clarke County.)

When the conversation turned to lack of funding for early learning, Ginn said that’s an issue Kemp is focused on. Cowsert is likely to reintroduce a bill requiring the state lottery, which funds pre-K and the HOPE Scholarship, to pay more into state coffers and less to lottery winners. If the state’s share grew from the current 25 percent to the 35 percent required by law, it would generate an additional $400 million, he said. Past versions of the bill have passed the Senate but died in the House, because lottery officials argue that reducing jackpots will result in fewer tickets sold.

Commendably, Flagpole readers mainly engaged in serious issues over frivolities and fakes this year— even online. It’s a Festivus miracle!

In lieu of a traditional year-in-review, here are the 15 most-clicked-on stories from flagpole.com in 2018, not including food-related stories, which are perennially among our most popular. The sundry restaurant comings and goings that made our digital readers press F to pay respects will be covered by food critic Hillary Brown in her year-end wrap-up in the Jan. 9 issue.

“Avid Pulls Out of Athens Academy Book Fair After Being Told to Remove Book With Gay Characters,” Mar. 9 Avid Bookshop shut down its annual book fair at Oconee County private school Athens Academy after an administrator told booksellers to hide copies of The Best Man by award-winning author Richard Peck because it features gay characters. “Our staff is uncomfortable working in an environment that condones this kind of censorship,” Avid owner Janet Geddis said. Head of School John Thorsen later apologized.

But it wasn’t enough, as Republican Brian Kemp, an Athens native, racked up huge margins in rural areas and clung to a 90,000-vote lead as election night wound down. he calendar can’t prevent Athens from celebrating the heck out of its second-favorite holiday (with Halloween slightly edging it out as the best annual excuse to turn up and/or throw down). New Year’s Eve on a Monday? No problem—we’ll party all weekend long. Here are this year’s best bets for live music. For complete listings, see The Calendar on p. 10.

Local rapper Torrance “Squalle” Wilcher has released several notable collections of lyrically daring, socially conscious hip hop, including 2016’s Black Picassoul and the following year’s truly dope Dope Souls. He’s set to drop yet another mixtape Saturday and is celebrating at the 40 Watt alongside Caulfield, Kxng Blanco, Ke Turner and others.

Georgia’s finest Southern-alt-rock collective returns to the 40 Watt to cap off another year of seemingly constant touring. In July, the group reissued its 1997 debut, newly dubbed Too Late to Turn Back Now, on New West. An upcoming full-length, produced by Nashville guru Aaron Lee Tasjan, is slated for a spring release. Rockers Dan Baird and Homemade Sin share Friday’s bill.

One of Athens’ most successful exports shares a very cool New Year’s Eve bill with the town’s most important emerging figure.

Electropop enchanter Kishi Bashi followed up 2016’s critically acclaimed Sonderlust with a reissue of his rare Room for Dream EP the next year. Linqua Franqa—aka Athens-Clarke County Commissioner Mariah Parker—smartly and engagingly connects the dots between hip hop, politics and the study of language. Local pop artist Pip the Pansy opens.

Athens natives Theo Hilton and Madeline Adams return to Go Bar for what has become an intimate holiday tradition. The expats—New Orleans-based Hilton fronts roving emo act Nana Grizol, while Adams is a member of tropical-punk Atlanta band Flamingo Shadow—will give friends and townies a mid-2000s nostalgia blast, as Hilton’s punk confessionals mesh seamlessly with Adams’ stirring folk snapshots.

Townies of an even certain-er age can relive the Allen’s Hamburgers days at The Foundry, where Randall Bramblett hosts a star-studded holiday show. The roots-rock icon, who helped establish Athens as a music destination back in the 1970s, has enjoyed a remarkable second act over the past decade-plus, releasing solid records at a steady clip, including 2017’s Juke Joint at the Edge of the World.

The Theatre’s throwdown is notable not only for its hosts and headliners—indefatigable DJ crew Booty Boyz, whose encyclopedic knowledge of pop music is matched only by their burning desire to make you dance, dammit—but also for the opener: Mayor-elect Kelly Girtz, himself a music buff who will make his DJ debut under the meta moniker Everybody Girtz. An educator by day, Hizzoner will donate his door cut to Family ConnectionCommunities in Schools of Athens.

The Foundry · 8 p.m. · $12–15 After gaining prominence as a member of North Carolina string band Carolina Chocolate Drops, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dom Flemons left the group in 2013 to pursue a solo career. The following year, he released Prospect Hill, an album that expanded on the Chocolate Drops’ repertoire, incorporating spirituals, proto-jazz, blues and other influences. In March, the Arizona native returned with Black Cowboys, recorded for Smithsonian Folkways and dedicated to illuminating the largely obscured history of the black Americans who inhabited and helped build the Old West. Morton Theatre · 7:30 p.m. · $18 Athens’ newest comedy club, Moonlight Theater Company, opens this month in the former Rubber Soul suite of the Leathers Building with plans to offer professionally led theater classes, artist residencies for traveling performers and weekend workshops, in addition to plays and stand-up comedy. To celebrate the launch, a variety show will include performances by comedians Michael Burgos and Leo Mohr; singers Ansley Stewart and Bea Troxel; actors Mackenzy Cade, Mallory Moye, Taylor Wood and Andrew Youngerman; choreographer Kalyn Hardman; and founder Chase Brantley.

Flicker Theatre & Bar · 10 p.m. · $5 Chameleonic Athens rockers Georgia Dish Boys blend sounds and scenes with wild-eyed fervor. Drawing on touchstones like Neil Young, Sonic Youth and Townes Van Zandt, the group recasts roots music on the newly released Nine Song Movie.

The record, which wears its influences on its sleeve—and in its song titles, like “Heartworn Highways” and “Howe Gelb Said”—is full of buzzsaw guitars and dizzy pedal steel, with frontman Seth Martin’s menacing shriek its attention-grabbing centerpiece. Martin and contributor Tyler Key are in the midst of a two-month-plus tour, but they’ll stop at home for a shower and a show at Flicker the first Saturday of the new year. [GV]

State Botanical Garden of Georgia · 2–4 p.m. · FREE! “Put a Bird On It” features 30 wall quilts that were handmade by members of the Mountain Laurel Quilters’ Guild, an organization based in Clarkesville that attracts artists from as far away as North Carolina who aim to preserve and perpetuate the art of quilting. Using traditional, contemporary and art techniques, each artist was challenged to create a piece that incorporates one or more birds, with many of the works featuring species native to Georgia. This is the third time the guild has presented a show at the botanical garden, and the exhibition will remain on view in the conservatory through Mar. 3. [JS]

TIME TRAVEL CHRISTMAS

It appeared just after Christmas 2017. On my desk sat a bag bright with a cheeky-looking Santa. I thrust my hand into the tissue paper and drew out a blue rectangle with a string looped around the top. The words “Police Box” were printed on each side.

A co-worker said she had a late gift for me, but she didn’t know this about me—did she?

I like to forget I am a walking stereotype. I sent this co-worker a text: “Did you give me the TARDIS?” She texted back, “The ornament?”

Yes, TARDIS: Time and Relative Dimension in Space = “the ornament.”

Like all Whovians, I harbor strong affection for the TARDIS, a time-traveling vessel disguised as a British police call box. This is just what my tree needed, and—thanks more to laziness than the superstition I claim—my tree stays up well past Christmas, so I hung it up as soon as I got it home.

Snuggled amidst fake pinetree needles, it evoked tantalizing dreams. With a TARDIS, I could travel back, change a national election, reduce climate change and usher in world peace.

But Christmas was over, and I was feeling selfish.

This was my TARDIS, and I would use it as a portal to my Christmases past.

The first voyage would be only two days back: Christmas Day 2017. Before we all left the house to go see Star Wars, I would find the leftover turkey hovering in a corner, its platter covered by a pecan pie, and put it in the fridge instead of leaving it out to spoil. This is what comes from trusting a vegetarian with the meat—no turkey sandwiches to nourish the Jedi resistance. I could delete this total fail from the family memory bank.

The next trip I’d make in my TARDIS would be to Christmas 1993. That year, my 5-year-old daughter made a last-minute request for a My Size Barbie. Amid peers giddy with the grasping opportunity of the season, she was coached to make a bold request. I assured her that Santa would surprise her with something wonderful—and that she would actually play with—but she hung on stubbornly.

When our bright-eyed little girl ran into our living room that Christmas morning, she eagerly surveyed the

giftscape. Failing to find any “my size” present, disappointment flashed over her face, but infinitely sadder was the forced stoic enthusiasm that followed. You’d do almost anything to avoid seeing your 5-year-old hide her broken heart.

This was her secret litmus test. Any Santa worth believing in would bring her that doll regardless of what her parents thought. Santa failed her, and as Santa’s emissaries, so did we.

Yes, if I could go back, I would let Santa get her that damn scary Barbie, and I’d treasure every second of her joyous belief confirmed. More time for her to wonder about magic in the world would be a gift to us both, and the perfect job for a TARDIS. My parents did a better job. Santa didn’t go all crazy, but there was always enough magic in the air to hang my hopes on. I don’t have a single childhood Christmas I would change until 1984.

I was in my 20s spending the holiday with my family.

I unwrapped a gift from my parents, meaning my mom: a set of yellow canisters—tins of varying sizes covered with a strawberry design as ubiquitous in that time as ribbon-wearing geese for country-kitchen wannabes.

I frowned. Mom knew me better than this. My dad tripped over his quiet explanation that he’d won them in a tennis tournament. He could have had a trophy, but he had so many trophies, he thought it’d be nice to get me something.

Dad never got me gifts on his own, and after this Christmas, he would hedge his risks, buying me only bottles of booze.

I tried for a do-over. I softened my critical gaze, remarked on how useful they would be, how cool it was that he won them. Years later, when he’d visit me, I’d point to them in use, trying to make solid truth out of the slippery gloss applied in panic.

If I could go back, I’d unwrap those tins with joy, and he’d see my genuine appreciation for his intentions, no matter that it wasn’t my style, and that domestic gifts to women are generally ill-advised.

And that would be my gift to him: a glimmer of hope for a future I already knew. Our misaligned efforts to connect wouldn’t be forever doomed to miss their targets.

My TARDIS returns home in time for this Christmas, and I step out realizing that even these small, selfish-seeming ambitions are bigger on the inside: a desire to celebrate and protect our connections, which are stronger than our mess-ups. We can’t get it right every time, but we can have the grace to forgive each other and ourselves—even when we leave the turkey out.

2018 IN REVIEW

Thanksgiving. Let’s look back at some of the highlights of 2018—which, in the Chinese Zodiac, is the Year of the Sugar Glider.

Winter A chilly start to the year finds the internet, and the world, astounded at the Tide Pod “challenge,” where unwitting YouTubers eat packets of laundry detergent. Tide is aghast, and quickly releases advisories reminding otherwise rational consumers that their non-consumable products are not to be consumed. They also note that Tide Pods are gluten-free, to the confusion of many.

In Athens, local ne’er-do-well, real estate developer, hooligan and Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp is busy with his gubernatorial campaign. Among his campaign promises are to make Georgia No. 1 in the nation for apartment complexes with fake windows, and to out-graft Governor Deal.

We get a dusting of snow, causing approximately 10,000 traffic accidents and woolly mammoth sightings on Tallassee Road.

Spring With warmer weather approaching, Tide releases new Arnold Palmer Tide Pods—a refreshing way to quench your laundry’s thirst.

Georgia primary races are held May 22, with Democrat Stacey Abrams winning her party’s nomination. On the Republican side, Kemp and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle are forced into a July runoff, to the confusion of many.

Shockingly, a few days after the primary, Republican also-rans Clay Tippens, Hunter Hill and Michael Williams are all found dead of apparent suicide, hanging from helicopters hovering over a Colombian coca plantation managed by Kemp Investment Properties, LLC. During UGA graduation, university President Jere Morehead comments, “They really did try, but some of them just couldn’t grasp the subtleties of underwater basket weaving.” Almost 10 students receive diplomas.

It also rains for two solid months.

Summer Election monitors in Georgia bring the office of Secretary of State to task over voting machine irregularities. The machines, manufactured in 1972, run an updated version of BASIC+, and are said to be “OK” by Kemp, who is busy culling voter registrations. He also notes that the machines have been certified by the independent consulting firm of Yelagin and Sopov, Moscow.

With much confusion, August sees the littering of Bird scooters around Athens, immediately causing several broken ankles and head injuries. Birds will ultimately be banned by December, but remain popular among party-hardy students.

In a terrific home opener on Sept. 1, UGA takes on Austin Peay in Sanford Stadium. Fans are thrilled as the Dawgs dominate. Despite losing 10 players to Bird injuries, by the end of the third quarter, coach Kirby Smart has already played all the fourth and fifth-stringers, and so he allows waterboys, cheerleaders, those guys on the sidelines with the chains with flags on top, and even attendees to play. Uga X throws two touchdown passes for 27 yards and helps put the Dawgs on top: final score, 845 to negative 14.

played chimes that sounded like a breeze passing through a distant temple. A couple of does and their fawns ambled outside by the window. We enjoyed their gentle presence.

At the end of the evening, we shared our creations with one another. Those of us who had arrived stressed seemed relaxed. We had all used completely different approaches and colors.

My painting, done in orange, yellow and green strokes of paint surrounding a dark road curving into a sunrise, captured my recent experience. Now, I could share it with others. The picture is simple and bright, and I look at it during sad times. On those days, I sometimes sing some of Ronnie Milsap’s words, especially when I’m walking our dogs in bright moonlight.

Many of Laura’s friends and fellow instructors at Canopy Studio recall that one of her favorite songs was “I Wish I Was the Moon” by Neko Case. I’m not ready to sing that one yet. For now, I’ll enjoy the older country tune and the trees beneath moonlight at night or the sunlit sky at dawn.

I’ll also have a much greater appreciation for what paint, paintbrushes and paintings can do for the soul. Even for beginners.

THE FREE MARKET APPROACH TO HEALTH CARE

On Oct. 21, your humble scribe has the honor of having his picture taken with the creator and current cast of “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” Just sayin’.

As election day approaches, many polling locations are found to be simple plywood shacks with the words “Vot Hear” [sic] spray-painted on the side. The Secretary of State’s office cannot be reached for comment. On Nov. 7, with 100 percent voter turnout, Kemp is unanimously elected to the office of governor; he quickly certifies the results. The campaign denies reports of Kemp being spotted dancing nude around a bonfire of absentee and provisional ballots.

Birds are banned in ACC, in favor of hydrogen-filled personal blimps.

As this confusing year wraps up, we’ll look back on our memories and sigh dejectedly. If you’ll excuse me, I, um, have a rather large load of laundry I need to start.

SUNLIGHT, SINGING AND SACRED ART

Our 25-year-old daughter, Laura Conroy, helped lead the Wild Rumpus in 2016. Then she performed gracefully on the trapeze by City Hall, but grew dehydrated and exhausted. Later, after an intense argument with her partner, Laura took her life in the early hours of Oct. 30.

My husband and I value the memories of Laura that enter our thoughts unexpectedly, especially in the fall.

Could the ancient belief about the veil between the living and spirit worlds thinning in autumn have something to it? Perhaps it is a special time for connections to occur and memories to flow.

I also understand more about how the arts provide windows into the beauty of life, the reality of death and memories of loved ones. As I enter my own autumn years, I realize how the arts help magnify moments of intense feelings.

Near the end of September, I headed down Tallassee Road for my Friday morning YMCA pilates class. My mind centered on whether I had brought my water bottle.

Suddenly, the sky turned brilliant gold, and bright rays of sunlight spread through the treetops. The warm glow filled me to the brim. At that moment, Ronnie Milsap’s comforting voice rose from the radio with “I Wouldn’t Have Missed It for the World.” He sang: “I wouldn’t have missed it for the world Wouldn’t have missed loving you, girl You’ve made my whole life worthwhile with your smile I wouldn’t trade one memory ’Cause you mean too much to me Even though I lost you, girl I wouldn’t have missed it for the world” The synchronicity of the gold sky, sunlit trees and sweet country song unleashed a torrent of tears. The music brought out my longing for someone I loved with all my heart and lost too soon.

I got to the Y in time to hop in a shower before class and let the cool water soothe my red, puffy eyes. Pilates, yoga and other mind/body classes often help during times of grief, because of the need to breathe rhythmically and mindfully. It is calming. This class was no exception, and I found my center again. Yet a wound was now reopened. It felt raw and needed to be closed. I feared heading downward into depression. Once down in those depths, it’s a struggle to pull back out again.

Fortunately, my neighbor welcomed community members to her “Drawing in Sacred Space” art class on Oct. 1.

Jessica Magnarella said to just bring ourselves—she’d supply brushes, paper and paint. I hesitated. Brushes? Paper?

And paint? Oh my! I have little experience in creating this kind of art. I just like to look at what someone else has created.

But Jessica showed our small group—ranging from a preteen to seniors—how to use water, little dabs of paint and different-sized brushes to paint whatever was on our minds. With her gentle coaching, our paintbrushes glided across our blank sheets of paper. No one held back. Those were joyful moments of neither judgement nor grades, just freedom to create. I’m imagining hunger insurance—or, perhaps, it would be called, in parallel with convention, “satiation insurance.”

Hungry, I proceed to the burger joint, where some are covered but others resist the insurance mandate and pay out of pocket. My personal information is taken, and photocopies of my ID and insurance card. Those with neither insurance nor income are transported by emergency vehicles when they nearly succumb to starvation and are given a cheeseburger, despite lack of coverage or cash. I pay my co-payment of $1. I eat my cheeseburger.

The burger joint, to thrive financially, juggles payments from the various insurers, so it cannot post a set price of the cheeseburger. About six to eight weeks after jousting with the insurance company, the burger joint’s billing department—which is housed in square footage larger than its kitchen and eating area and employs more white-collar workers than food servers—sends a three-page bill. The burger’s price is listed at $34.81. The insurance share has been minused out in a separate column: $28.55. I still owe $5.26. If payment is not sent within 30 days, that will be $5.79. If not within 60 or 90 days… well, an algorithm and then bill-collection agencies will determine my fate.

Similar information had been received in my mail four days ago from the insurance company, although that information was listed in an entirely different format, using different column headers and jargon, more breakdown columns and more pages, including four pages to inform me of my rights to dispute and appeal, with all the steps of that process listed in language that only a Yale-educated attorney could decipher. Another two pages, probably compiled by a United Nations agency, listed interpretation services and the locations of the embassies I might visit for assistance with navigating my appeal. Baffled, I had set that statement aside.

By contrast, my digestive system processed the cheeseburger within a few hours, and, by simply pressing the shiny lever on a porcelain appliance, I was able weeks ago to put the matter behind me.

HOME AGAIN

Mimi and I spent a week in the frozen North, where we were born and raised, and where much of our family still resides in the suburbs of New York City. New York City is a hip and happ’nin’ place—so cool they had to name it twice.

If you leave for a season, you return a stranger. We have been away for many seasons, and, yes, it is stranger. My kin had to remind us of all of the caveats of survival once again: If on foot, avoid eye contact, keep walking (the predators always go for the slow, feeble and infirm lagging at the rear of the pack); don’t gawk; don’t wear big, dangly earrings in the subway (handles for muggers); and never stop to look at a map or ask for directions. When driving, don’t signal for lane changes or look over your shoulder. It only alerts the cabbies to close rank on either side.

I will add to this a personal warning to avoid the timespace-warping-wormhole that surrounds the George Washington Bridge. It sucks the unwary into its vortex and slings them out into northern New Jersey or Harlem, depending on randomly changing factors known only to itself.

The language was at least familiar. I will be the first to admit that a Bronx accent is not, by most objective standards, the most mellifluous of tongues, but it is the language my youth—excuse me, make that “my yoot”—and it is dear to my heart. The utterance, “Oi was jus’ gonna make

a fresh potta cawfee. Can I getchez some?” is not only readily understandable, it speaks to me comfortingly of home.

In 1995, deep in the heart of Manhattan, there was a haven in the apartment of our daughter and son-in-law.

With their guidance, we were able to sample the incredible variety of stores and eating establishments within a block or two of their home. We enjoyed a different ethnic food style each day and night for our stay, including that of one group so new that National Geographic has yet to include them in their directory of “Who’s Where.”

The focus of our visit was, of course, spending time with our relatives. We drove the saner Currier and Ives hillsides of Cooperstown, NY to visit Mimi’s family (and yes, there is a lot more there than the Baseball Hall of Fame).

Later, we spent the day before Christmas in the joyfully rollicking chaos of my gathered kin. In both places, and in quieter regroupings throughout the week, beyond the warm hugs at the door, subtle details said, “It’s good to be home again.” My grandmother’s teapot, my mother’s “good china,” my brother-in-law’s laugh, my sister’s smile on the face of her children, the arch of my nephew’s eyebrow that I recognized from my own mirror, the eyes shared by my wife and daughters and the overall sense of belonging were an affirmation of “home.”

We have lived in Brunswick for about 15 years. We tended our garden and gradually molded our house to our taste in that time. A new family of friends has grown around us and embraced us. Our Brunswick family has

As the relief driver, you had to accept being called upon at any moment to take the wheel. It didn’t happen often. The notification usually came around three or four o’clock in the morning with, “Hey, wake up! Can you drive for a while?”

This became my favorite time to drive—watching the sky change colors in the quiet dawn, something my sleeping bandmates never seemed to appreciate, no matter how often I would point it out to them.

Driving to New Orleans was always more of a festive event—often starting before we got in the van—so when I was called upon to drive, the question was more like, “Hey, are you sure you can drive?” I don’t recall exactly how I responded, but it must have been something resembling “yes,” and I got my mind around taking over driving duties when we stopped for gas at the next exit.

Ralph, driver for life, needed a break after driving for five hours following a full day working at a print shop.

Armed with a cup of coffee and a pack of smokes, he was capable of delivering us to our gig most anywhere in the country. In a pinch, gas-station coffee would work, but a high-end brew was much more desirable. Although a lot has k continued on next page

been said about the influence of drugs and alcohol on music culture, you can’t deny the contribution coffee has made to further it down the road. In the front of the van, we would often plot a route through towns where we knew we could find a decent cup, which resulted in a near-mutiny once from the other band members in the back, led by a wildeyed drummer screaming, “That’s the second McDonald’s we’ve passed without stopping!”

After years of traveling, we acquired a reputation for arriving to the gig late. We learned to do the fastest soundcheck ever to appease the sound engineer, and later that night, we’d deliver a solid performance, where even the club owner would forgive us. We learned to keep our pit-stop times to a minimum—get in and get out fast.

This night, we had plenty of time to get to our destination as I jumped in the driver’s seat to begin my turn at the wheel. After a quick head count of band members, I drove away and was met with the most awful metallic sound that words cannot begin to describe. Like one of those old radio shows where they play a sound and people call in to try guess what it is. It would have taken hours before someone identified this sound, but when you are 10 feet from a gas pump, you know it immediately.

I sat frozen at the wheel looking in the side-view mirror at the nozzle still in the side of the van as the hose dangled, dripping gas on the ground. I imagined that the woman who rang up customers inside would soon be calling the cops. The others must have had this thought too, and as the laughter died down, they began to prepare themselves for a possible police visit.

I looked into the gas-station window to see the woman happily ringing up customers, unaware of what had happened at the pump. Ralph got out of the passenger seat and tiptoed around the van, doing a sneaky walk that you learned from cartoons would make you invisible. He nonchalantly hung the broken nozzle back on the pump.

Tiptoeing back around the van, he jumped in the seat and yelled, “Drive!” We sped away in the night, vowing to never stop at this exit ever again.

WHERE TO FIND THE BEST WILDLIFE

Growing up in Washington state, my family liked to nature-watch. We’d look for beaver, identify animal tracks, including mountain lion, and watch salmon jump upstream to spawn. Looking at the Olympic Mountains from our Seattle house, my dad told us that mountain goats lived on their steep cliffs. On long, boring-for-kids drives, sometimes he would try to get us to look around by claiming to see a mountain goat. We’d look hard, just in case, but we never saw one. As an adult, I now know that the mountain goats were an introduced species limited to the Olympics, and are being removed due to their vast destruction of the fragile alpine environment.

So, when up in the Canadian Rocky Mountains on a cold, early summer’s day, I was excited to hike some steep ski slopes that I believed would be ideal to find goats.

Morgan—my somewhat reluctant hiking partner—and I climbed and scrambled amongst the scree and scrub to the top of a slope. Not a single animal. We went up a second slope. Nothing. Morgan stated the obvious: “I don’t think we’re going to see anything here.”

While descending, I wondered how I’d gotten the location so wrong. When we arrived back at the parking lot,

CHASING FIREFLIES

“Look! Over there!”

I hurried down the back porch steps. Tiny glowing lights flashed on and off from all directions. Enchanted by my first sighting of the fireflies I’d heard so much about, I felt giddy, like a child again, as I darted around the yard.

My heart beat faster as I pursued them, but each time I got close to one, it flew out of my reach. When I stopped for a few moments to catch my breath, a firefly suddenly appeared right in front of me. At first, it looked like an ordinary winged insect suspended in air, until its posterior light bulb ignited and then quickly extinguished.

I stood still, taking in the show. There were so many of them—it seemed wherever I looked, their twinkling lit up

there they were! No, not mountain goats, but equally exotic to us, Dall sheep. Nearly 5 feet long and very light brown, they had magnificent curved horns. However, clods of thick fur were hanging off them, and we wondered why they would be foraging in a dirt parking lot.

“Are they sick?” I asked.

“I have no idea.”

We fretted while driving past stunning scenery and several groups of mangy-looking Dall sheep on the road.

Back in the mountains, we saw parked cars, with people boiling out of their vehicles and heading towards a knot of tourists staring at something about 8 feet away. “Probably more Dall sheep,” Morgan joked, but as we drove by, we saw them: a mountain goat ewe and her two kids. They had white-cream fur as soft and fuzzy as I’d dreamed. Mama was standing under a sign that read, “Do not disturb the wildlife.”

On a trip to Nevada, I wanted to find wild donkeys.

Morgan again was reluctant, as she thought that seeing burros was unlikely compared to rattlesnakes. “I do have some idea of where the burros are supposed to be,” I said.

“Then we find some fresh donkey doo and follow it to its source.”

“Donkey dung is your plan?” Skeptic. We easily found a good bit of doo near the parking lot. We poked this way and that in the blazing heat, trying to follow what seemed like random paths of doo, but eventually, the doo wasn’t getting any fresher, and neither were we.

Disappointed, we drove on a dirt road until we were blocked by a stopped car at the intersection with the main road. An arm reached out of the passenger side with a carrot. Then, we saw them: a herd of wild burros at the corner, just waiting for handouts. Foiled again, said our dusty, thirsty, donkey-dung smelling selves, but this time by soft and fuzzy burros.

Since then, we have continued to observe that where we spot birds and other creatures often is near the parking area. In all of Utah, the only place I saw marmots (a type of large ground squirrel that often lives in western mountains) was a park, where they were munching happily on the lawn. We now realize that the effort and small adversities faced (ticks, poisonous plants, snakes) during hiking are totally unnecessary.

What explains this phenomenon? When we alter the landscape, we accidentally provide benefits for animals that draw them to non-natural environments—but there are adverse consequences, too. The Dall sheep weren’t sick, just molting; they were getting salt from the roads. This causes vehicle collisions, decimating herds in some places. Like the burros, some animals learn to take easy handouts, although this is often nutritionally detrimental. Artificial grazing areas such as soccer fields, combined with excessive populations, may contribute to the spread of chronic wasting disease among elk and deer.

These atypical environments also encourage our illusions that these animals are here for our enjoyment, that they are not wild animals and are surviving just fine.

Serious consequences aside, I appreciate that these areas provide a way for anyone to see wild creatures, but where’s the thrill in watching these beautiful animals in parking lots, soccer fields or parks? One should have to sweat, get bitten by bugs or work at it a bit to appreciate the sweet serendipity of spotting and watching a wondrous creature going about its life.

the yard in the waning light of dusk. What miracle created such a creature? Their beauty mesmerized me. Another one flew near me and hovered for a few moments. This time, I tried to touch it, but it took off too soon and disappeared behind the trees and into the woods beyond the house.

Finally, I returned to the porch and sat next to my husband. He put his arm around me and pulled me close. Our two dogs sat beside us, surveying the yard for critters.

“I want to watch the fireflies like this every night.

Fireflies on summer nights. I think this is always going to be my favorite thing about living in Georgia.”

“I’m glad you like them,” he whispered. He kissed my cheek, then rested his on top of my head. “I’m so happy to see you smile.”

“I really do love it here. I love the fireflies. And I love living with you.”

He chuckled and blushed, then pulled me into a soft kiss—the kind of kiss that feels like coming home.

All of a sudden, my black French bulldog began barking and startled me out of my wistful reminiscence. Robby practically knocked me off the porch when he pushed past me and raced down the steps in pursuit of a squirrel.

“Robby!” I groaned.

My blissful reverie was broken, but there they were—the fireflies—their gleaming luminescence popping up everywhere: near the bushes, in the tree branches, above me, around me, far and near.

Every summer, they faithfully appear for a few short months to dazzle me with their spectacle of lights. It’s been seven summers now, and they still thrill me as much as they did that first night.

I scurried down the steps and tried to chase a few of them all around the yard. I wanted to catch one, just one, before it flew beyond my reach. One of them flew so close to me I could almost catch it. I chased it all the way to the fence until I stopped short and froze in place. The firefly disappeared as I stood staring at the driveway. I felt heaviness in my chest looking at the place where he used to park his car. The space he used to fill had been empty for days, but it felt like years.

Robby trotted up beside me, and we both stared into the emptiness. He whimpered as we faced the loneliness together. I reached down to stroke his fur, hoping to console him.

“I know, Robby. I miss him, too.”

It seemed like several minutes passed, but it was only seconds before I forced myself to turn away and look back toward the yard where the fireflies’ lights danced in the fading twilight. Darkness waited around the corner. Soon, the

fireflies would retire for the night, but they would be back tomorrow, and I would return to watch them play as their miracle of light soothed my grieving heart.

“This is my last summer chasing fireflies…” My voice drifted off as I looked over my shoulder on the way back to the house. “I’m going to miss this,” I whispered.

I knew I would always think of them when summer came. There would be no fireflies where I was headed. No back porch, no woods in the backyard, no sounds of cicadas crying out from the treetops.

I took one last look out into the yard. There were fewer of them now, but those that remained still gave off their magnificent light.

Maybe there will be fireflies in my dreams.

It was wishful thinking, but I hoped it was true. Then, I’d never really leave this beautiful home, and I’d be forever chasing fireflies.

NICARAGUA

Perhaps, during the holidays, we could all look more closely at the daily lives of citizens from Central America for us to feel the bond that connects our humanity.

I lived multiple years in Nicaragua, and many friends and family have called to report that it hasn’t been an easy 2018 for most Nicaragüense. By midsummer, over 300 people were reported killed by the Ortega government.

Citizens reported snipers on the rooftops shooting at the population, terrorizing all. Today, things seem to have calmed, and hopefully, a wonderful season is ahead. As we gather at holiday meals and hold our families close, we can also understand the need for asylum and urge our government to hold to our values of honoring those fleeing bloodshed.

Now, I have to admit, I’m a poor excuse for an Athens music fan, and my appreciation for the local scene is pretty much limited to blowing out my eardrums at a Jucifer show once, but I thought, “Here’s my chance to become a Widespread Panic fan.” I had listened to a couple of their tracks years ago and thought, “Widespread Panic is good, but it’s not really my thing.” So, I wrote them off as just another jam band. But maybe they would grow on me.

I got home ready to have a deep listening session with my new album. I loaded Space Wrangler into the CD player, and it whirred to life. The room filled with acoustic guitar picking that lifted me up and carried me through the desert, through space and the memories of my life. And each new track perpetuated my beautiful trance. One song in particular sounded so familiar, but I couldn’t place where I had heard it before. I figured it must have been on WUOG years ago.

When the ride ended, I was stunned. How could I have written off this band for so long? I was now a fan. I put the CD back in its case and said, “You’ve earned a place beside my Jucifer album.”

The next day, I was eating breakfast and noticed Space Wrangler on the bookshelf. That reminded me that I wanted to find out the name of that familiar song. So, I grabbed the CD case and popped it open. The CD was mostly solid orange, but I thought maybe the tracks would be written small somewhere. I angled the CD into the morning light.

A rainbow of colors rolled around its silvery edge. And the tiny words came into focus: BECK: SEA CHANGE

FLIGHT 3A

My name is Sam. I’m a 13-year-old boy on a plane all by myself. Specifically, 3A. So, I get onto flight 3A and see a man sitting in my seat. Mine. And being my shy 13-year-old self, I walk up to the man and say, “Um, excuse me, mister.”

I have to repeat myself before he looks up from his book. ”What do you want, kid?” he asks in a rude voice. I continue, “Oh, uh, that’s my seat, I think.”

He grunts and says, “Can’t you just sit next to me?” It sounds like a whine this time.

I say OK, and the plane takes off. The man starts a conversation. “What’s your name, kid?”

“Sam,” I reply. “What’s yours?”

He doesn’t respond for a long time. “I can’t tell you.”

I start to notice that he might be a bad person. He is in my seat, won’t get out of it, sounds rude and won’t tell me his name. Is he even supposed to be here?
