BOE Extends Superintendent’s Contract PLUS, KEMP CALLS FOR A CEASE-FIRE AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

By Blake Aued and Ashlyn Webb news@flagpole.com A majority of Clarke County Board of Education members gave Superintendent Demond Means a vote of confidence last week by extending his contract for another year, on top of the 18 months still left on the current one.

The 6-1 vote came after board members met for an hour behind closed doors to evaluate Means, who has served as superintendent for a year and a half. The “no” vote came from John Knox, who said he was taken off-guard by board vice president and superintendent evaluation committee chairwoman Linda Davis’ statement that the evaluation and the contract extension were not related. “I didn’t have the information I felt I needed to vote,” Knox said.

Greg Davis, Linda Davis, Jared Bybee, Sarah Ellis, Charles Worthy and Carol Williams voted in favor of the contract extension, though Williams hesitated.

Ovita Thornton left the meeting early, and Vernon Payne has been absent for months with an illness.

Bybee, the board’s president, did not give a reason why the board took the unusual step of extending Means’ contract mid-year.

“We just decided to do it now,” he said.

The new contract is identical to the old one, except it expires in June 2021 rather than June 2020, according to the district’s attorney, Michael Pruett. The current contract pays Means $209,000 a year plus benefits. It includes a buyout clause and

After a divisive campaign, Gov.-elect Brian Kemp called for unity last week in his first major speech since winning a close and hard-fought election. Taking a different tone than what voters heard on the campaign trail, he appealed to state legislators to “put politics behind us.”

The speech at the University of Georgia’s Biennial Institute, a three-day training session for state legislators, came months after Kemp emerged from a bruising Republican primary in July and just weeks after he repeatedly called Democratic opponent Stacey Abrams a radical extremist.

“It’s time to shed the labels and work together as Georgians. It’s time to stand up for our communities, our families and our Georgia values,” he said. “It’s time to protect the vulnerable. It’s time to do the right thing—even when no one is looking.”

At least two Democratic legislators, Reps. Renitta Shannon of Decatur and Sandra Scott of Clayton County, boycotted Kemp’s speech. “I am sick and tired of conservatives across the country running hateful campaigns and then expecting everyone to go back to business as usual after campaign season,” Shannon said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

In his speech, Kemp repeated the promises he made in his campaign’s four-point plan: making Georgia the leading state in successful small businesses, reforming state government, strengthening rural Georgia and “putting Georgia first.” He particularly focused on boosting small businesses and rural Georgia—where he racked up huge margins in his narrow win over Abrams.

Odds and Ends 9d’s Bar agreed to a consent order last week acknowledging that it did not have a dress code posted as required by Athens-Clarke County law when a doorman denied local African-American man Kendrick Bullock entry in April 2017. As a penalty, the East Clayton Street bar agreed to close for two days last weekend while its alcohol licenses were suspended, pay a $350 administrative fine, go on probation for one year and develop policies on applying its dress code in a non-discriminatory fashion.

It’s the first time ACC’s non-discrimination ordinance—passed in 2016 to address numerous complaints that student bars downtown were unfairly using dress codes to keep out black customers—has been enforced. 9d’s owner Mark Bell challenged the ordinance as unconstitutional in federal court, but the lawsuit was dismissed.

Almost three years after submitting plans for a mixed-use development at Prince Avenue and Pulaski Street, Greensville, SC developer Homes Urban is ready to break ground on 100 Prince. The company finally closed on a deal to buy the former St. Joseph Catholic Church property on Dec. 11, according to Athens Downtown Development Authority Director of Planning and Outreach David Lynn and real-estate sources. Piggly Wiggly has applied for a $250,000 Georgia Cities Foundation loan to become the development’s anchor tenant, and Lynn said he expects that application to be approved.

Another major development, General Time, broke ground on its first phase earlier this month—a Terrapin Beer Co. warehouse. The development at the former watch and clock factory off Newton Bridge Road will eventually include apartments, retail space, restaurants and a 3,000-seat amphitheater.

Extra Special Coffee JAVA JOY SERVES UP JOE WITH A SIDE OF HUGS

he coffee cart Java Joy has all the usual extras people expect from a coffee shop, like sugar, cream and muffins. It also offers something most others don’t: hugs.

Smiling faces are all you can see when you stop by Java Joy, a mobile coffee cart run by adults with special needs through the Watkinsville nonprofit Extra Special People.

“We spread the joy, we laugh, we hug,” said Suzanne Gusen, 29, a Java Joy “joyrista”—the organization’s name for a barista.

Java Joy gives the community an opportunity to interact with people with disabilities, said manager Laura Graben. “More than the joy it brings [the joyristas]… the

adults with disabilities the opportunity to get workplace training, a job, and hopefully to go on and live their lives more independently and successfully,” Graben said.

In 2017, only 18.7 percent of adults with disabilities were employed, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Oftentimes, this is the joyristas’ first job. “I love Java Joy because I can make my own money,” said Hannah Rose Baird, 28.

Joan Baird, Hannah Rose’s mom, said she has seen her daughter become more independent since working at Java Joy. “She’s able to get out in the community and meet so many people. That’s been great for her language development and communication skills,” Joan Baird said. “Also, she’s SAVANNAH COLE

joy on the customers’ faces is even more rewarding,” she said. “They usually don’t show up to an event knowing they are going to have this interaction or experience, and so then it changes their perspective.”

Usually, an organization will rent the cart, and the coffee and muffins—provided

by Jittery Joe’s—are free.

During finals week at the University of Georgia, Java Joy was at the Ramsey Student Center and Aderhold Hall.

Joyristas gave a hug and a few words of encouragement, like “good luck with finals,” with every free cup of coffee served.

“Today, I have three finals back to back.

There was a rumor down the hallway that Java Joy was downstairs. I could not have been more excited! They were so incredible.

They greeted me, gave me a hug and helped me get my coffee. Now, I think I can go out and conquer finals,” said UGA student Lane Carrandi.

Java Joy brings smiles not only to customers’ faces, but also the joyristas, who are gaining independence, as well as communication and job skills.

Java Joy started two years ago this month. Co-founders Jake Sapp and Laura Whitaker envisioned providing more opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities. “Our mission is to provide

She’s learned real life skills… and money skills. She loves to get her tip money and save up to buy something special.”

Java Joy started out serving only in the Athens area and had four sponsors— Bulldog Kia, The Sign Brothers, Towable Tailgates and Cheeky Peach. Now, it’s traveling as far as Atlanta. Currently, it employs 11 joyristas, and the goal is to have at least 15 joyristas before the year ends, Graben said.

“Through that, we need more bookings.

So, in the next couple months, we want to get enough bookings so we can hire at least 20 joyristas,” Graben said.

Java Joy also started a new partnership with Jittery Joe’s called “Java Joy Day at the Roaster.” It allows joyristas to work the counter in Jittery Joe’s Barber Street tasting room and help employees grind and roast the coffee, as well as learn how to make cappuccinos, lattes and espressos.

Come and Take It THE BODIES OF WALTON COUNTY

“I don’t know,” I said. The way the flag was positioned, hung up near a cast-off refrigerator, it was hard to tell. Maybe it meant, “If you attempt to touch my rebel flag, I will take out my assault rifle and murder you with it.” Or maybe it meant, “Free fridge, you haul it.”

The neighbors came here from an Amish farm, though they themselves were Calvinists. They had seven homeschooled kids, and they all worked together to run a successful landscaping business. A few months before they hung up the flag, Bob, the father, came across the road to borrow my bee smoker. One wall of a bedroom was filled with honeycomb (“that’s where all those bees were coming from”), and he was going to take care of it right then.

I grabbed my bee smoker and followed him across the road. A dog was on a long lead near the porch, and he barked and snarled at me as we passed by. “Will that dog bite?” I asked him.

“He won’t bite you,” said Bob. We stood inside the bedroom. The sheetrock on one stretch of wall had been cut off.

The space between the wall studs was thick with comb, and bees flew in and out of the square where the window had been.

“Do you know anything about bees?”

I asked him. “Are you going to do this yourself?”

“If I call someone, I’ll have to get permits,” said Bob. “You know bees are regulated. The feds regulate you to death around here.” Bob picked up a can of insect spray and shook it up and down. He started talking about the Amish farm he’d lived on, and self-sufficiency. “The federal government exists for one thing only,” he said. “Defense of the nation.

They shouldn’t be taxing and regulating everything.”

“Well, I don’t mind paying taxes for things like roads and libraries and food inspections,” I said. “I really appreciate some regulation, so corporations don’t screw everything up.”

“You are delusional if you think the government has your best interests in mind,” he said.

“I believe it’s possible to govern in a way that meets

people’s needs,” I said. “I think that’s what we should demand.”

We stood there watching the bees in a silence that was not exactly hostile. “Thanks for the smoker,” said Bob, finally.

My daughter and I were still discussing the flag when Ben came home from work. “Did you see the flag?” asked Ben as soon as he walked in. “What are you going to do?”

“We should sneak over there in the middle of the night and replace it with a rainbow flag,” said my 9-year-old.

“No,” said Ben. “We should come up with a bunch of contradictory images and make him feel anxious all the time. A rainbow-colored swastika over a mushroom cloud, with the words ‘nuke ’em all.’ He’ll be like, ‘Nuke gay Nazis? Nuked BY gay Nazis?’”

“Why do they even have a dog in this fight?” I wondered.

“They’re from upstate New York.”

Bob came back a few weeks later to return the smoker.

“Did you get the bees?” I asked him.

“Yep, they’re gone,” he said.

It was springtime, and the cherry trees were blooming.

You could smell the wisteria in the trailer lot next door. “It sure is beautiful here,” I said.

“It sure is,” he said. “We are blessed to be here. The only problem is this road.” He yelled the last as a Walmart semi roared by.

“I know,” I said. “The first thing we’ve got to do is blow up that bridge.” I pointed to my left, toward the old bridge that spanned the Apalachee River and was the only

reasonable way into Athens.

I was kind of joking, but also kind of not. Sometimes, to get myself to sleep, I lay in bed at night imagining protecting this small outpost of millhouses and two abandoned churches from… what? Zombies? A pandemic? Civil unrest?

My fantasies always started with the neighbors banding together and blowing up the bridge.

I expected Bob to laugh. Instead, he said, “Oh, yes, I’ve already discussed this with the neighbor on the other side of you, and he agrees.”

“What?” I said. “You have? He does?” My neighbor on the other side was the guy who’d drawn a lot of people to High Shoals when he started the intentional Christian community. He spent most of his time building things and listening to The Beatles. He did not seem like the type to blow up a bridge.

“Oh, yes. He says he’s all for it. Everything bad comes from that way.” Bob waved his hand toward Athens. “But then, what about over there?”

He pointed in the opposite direction, where the two-lane road disappeared around a curve, headed for Bostwick.

“We’d pile up a bunch of cars and take turns manning it,” I said. “Like a road block.”

“Yep,” said my neighbor. “That’s what we’d do.”

Emboldened by our surprise conversation, I decided to talk to Bob about something that had been on my mind a lot recently. “Bob,” I said, “I need to talk to you about something I’ve been thinking a lot about.”

“Shoot,” said Bob. “I know that we don’t agree about politics. You are very conservative, and I am very liberal.”

“Eww, I just love libraries!” said Bob in a girly voice, throwing up his hands.

“Right,” I said. “However, if something really bad does happen around here, like, if there’s some sort of civil unrest or something, I promise not to murder your entire family if you promise not to murder mine.”

Again, Bob did not laugh. “Robin,” he said, sticking out his hand and looking me somberly in the eye. “You are my community, and your community is your family.”

“That’s good,” I said, shaking his hand. “If the fit hits the shan, I just wanted to make sure we had a deal.”

“The shit has already hit the fan,” said Bob. “And it’s a deal.”

My neighbor on the other side had a talk with Bob, and Bob had a talk with his oldest son, and the next day the rebel flag came down. The refrigerator’s still on the porch, though, if you know anyone. f

IT’S

both heartening and humbling to realize, compiling this annual list, just how many bright, creative, boundary-pushing musicians continue to call our small town home.

Indeed, despite the lack of a marquee export, Athens music thrived in 2018. Here are Flagpole music contributors’ 10 favorite local albums of the year, in alphabetical order. Let this rundown serve as a reminder of how damn good we’ve got it in the Classic City. Hear songs from these releases at flagpole.com. [Gabe Vodicka, music editor]

Cicada Rhythm E verywhere I Go

Cicada Rhythm’s harmonious core of bassist Andrea DeMarcus and guitarist Dave Kirslis left their geographic and creative comfort zones for their best release to date. Instead of recording in Athens with friends, the duo collaborated with Nashville producers Kenneth Pattengale (Milk Carton Kids) and Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers). Higher ambitions went beyond rubbing shoulders with Music City’s Americana elite. From the whirring organ accompaniment on “America’s Open Roads” to the orchestral vibe of “Even in the Shallows,” the band spiffs up its formula. Fortunately, that added shine never overshadows the songs’ folk roots. [Bobby Moore]

Dead Neighbors L ess

Recorded in the aftermath of an unexpected family death, Dead Neighbors’ Less is an emotionally honest and cathartic post-punk record. Though it’s just over 30 minutes and only eight tracks long, Less feels expansive and varied. It has lengthy instrumental interludes, scream-along anthems and the occasional moment of quiet reflection. The album, which was completed almost a year before its early 2018 release, feels like a cementing moment for the young legacy of lead singer and guitarist Sebastian Marquez. After Less, it’s hard to argue that Marquez is anything other than one of Athens music’s MVPs. [Nathan Kerce]

Eureka California R oadrunners

Blending a familiar ’90s slacker sound with various indie-alt-rock influences collected over the past two decades, Eureka California has settled into its boppy niche with Roadrunners, which teems with surf-inspired guitar riffs and ferociously accented drums. The duo’s takes

on personal isolation and political discord are concentrated into speedy tracks such as “Threads” and “Buffalo Bills 1990–1993,” each of which delivers the group’s signature breezy aggression in around two minutes or less. [Lily Guthrie]

between Southern rock and psychedelic indie sounds, and Braden’s strong but gentle vocals stroke the soul with candid and poetic lyrics. More now than ever, people need honesty, and Neighbor Lady has nothing but authenticity to share. [Lauren Leathers]

The Glands D ouble Coda

Nihilist Cheerleader R iot, Right?

The Glands spent nearly two decades being embraced by fans while confounding the industry.

Although the group could have banked thousands of dollars on a regular basis by playing more shows, they would instead woodshed for years and then emerge to play tiny rooms. Now, in the still-waving wake of Ross Shapiro’s death, there’s this testament that engages listeners at the same pace and tone as previous releases. All the moments are here: beauty, humor, subtlety, melody, deceptive simplicity. Although the title is both a giggle and an epitaph, the music isn’t an endgame measure. It’s just more proof of how much work The Glands actually did—even when it seemed like they weren’t working. [Gordon Lamb]

T. Hardy Morris Dude, the Obscure

On his debut for Normaltown Records, T. Hardy Morris turns down the upbeat garage and grunge influences that permeated his two prior albums. Aside from the relatively gleeful “Homemade Bliss,” this set of songs trudges through Morris’ internal dialogue about life, love and faith. “The Night Everything Changed,” “Cheating Life, Living Death,” “No Reason” and other selections add a poetic quality to the Southern Gothic storytelling Morris first explored with Dead Confederate. Beyond proving his talents as a lyricist, the new approach makes for quite the emotional roller-coaster when combined with prior material in a live setting. [BM]

Neighbor Lady M aybe Later

After just a short time together, Neighbor Lady made a splash in Athens, Atlanta and beyond with Maybe Later. The fourpiece is led by vocalist and guitarist Emily Braden, who is backed by seasoned rockers Merideth Hanscom (Semicircle) on bass, guitarist Jack Blauvelt (Dana Swimmer) and drummer Andrew McFarland (Reptar). The band seesaws

Flynne Collins’ mezzo voice cuts with chirpy poise through clangy punk melodies on Nihilist Cheerleader’s Riot, Right?, where you can hear the band’s Southern roots seep through its headbanging hits. The group’s sound is energetic and enjoyable, even as it aims to start a conversation about balances of power in societal structures. Staying true to retro roots amidst crunchy cacophony, Nihilist Cheerleader’s skill for blending rebellion and rapture is highlighted best in the songs “Drenched In,” “You’re Ur Uniform” and “Miss You Forever.” [LG]

Partials G lossolalia

The idea of transcendent communication is central to Partials’ debut EP, but in place of deity, one finds machine. With references to death ripping “out all the wire” and machines “absolving my soul” alongside hypnotic builds that layer repetitive, chant-like lyrics on top of funky instrumentation and Afrobeat rhythms, the EP effectively observes the worshipful and dependent relationship modern man has with technology.

Apart from the vivid social commentary, Glossolalia is a relatable album to which almost anyone can get down—it could be the subject of a thesis, or it could be blasted at a dance party. [Abigail Sherrod]

Saline Y ou Did It to Yourself

Though the majority of the band has since skipped town, Saline’s long-gestating You Did It to Yourself was recorded in Athens and, at times, feels like a sprawling goodbye letter to the city written on a crumpled-up napkin. Incorporating elements of emo, post rock and synthpop, Saline forgoes formula in favor of unpredictability, and it pays off in spades. Though the nine-track album constantly flips between genres, lead singer Anna Staddon’s excellent lyrics and vocals serve as a connective tissue, tying everything together in a neat, easyto-digest package. The YOD C hecking In

The YOD has already proven to be a vital part of Athens’ hip-hop scene with its explosive and rowdy live shows.

On its debut album, Checking In, the group of 10 artists from various backgrounds distills that energy into a vibrant collection of recordings.

“Play With Y’all” and “Mr. T” are effortlessly catchy and hypnotic as they bounce along and blend in with “Sober” and “Blood Money,” thematically darker tracks that touch on some of the group’s demons. The record refines The YOD’s collective charisma and vision into a kinetic tour de force. [Tucker Pennington] f

Six Favorite Non-Local Albums The Internet Hive Mind Five-piece act The Internet is the electronic pulse of the Los Angeles alternative R&B scene. With dashes of smooth soul mixed over easy, luscious beats, Hive Mind is liquid sunshine. Since releasing its first record in 2011, the group has found a mystic groove that bubbles with bliss. [LG]

Gia Margaret T here’s Always Glimmer If you want to know whether you can still feel, There’s Always Glimmer will help you find out. Gia Margaret’s debut offers gentle vocalizations, sparse but evocative instrumentation, heaps of nostalgia and a tinge of hope. For fans of Novo Amor, Phoebe Bridgers, Anna St. Louis and the like, this self-described “sleep-rock” artist needs to make her way onto your regular rotation. [AS]

Pinegrove Skylight Blunt and vulnerable, intricate and literate, Skylight finds Jersey’s Pinegrove fine-tuning the twangy emo hybrid introduced on 2016’s Cardinal.

In the record’s 11 rootsy pop stunners—many of which clock in at only one or two minutes—frontman Evan Stephens Hall navigates transgression, redemption, privilege and escape, his reedy, earnest delivery countered by the silvery harmonies of vocalist Nandi Rose Plunkett. [GV]

Sophie O il of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides After years of teasing with one-off singles and compilations, Scottish electronic producer and PC Music affiliate Sophie finally released a cohesive, brilliant full-length album. Oscillating between late’90s bubblegum pop and grinding, experimental noise, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides (phonetically, “I Love Every Person’s Insides”) is the musician’s masterwork and one of the best electronic albums of the decade. Richard Swift The Hex Despite its dark and thought-provoking lyrics, The Hex is upbeat, groovy and a really fun listen. Richard Swift’s posthumous record explores love and death through an eclectic combination of instrumentation and vocal stylings. With its intriguing falsetto sounds, deep echoes and drum-driven beats, Swift’s final album is worth your time. [Jessie Goodson]

Local Record Stores’ 2018 Top Sellers and Faves Editor’s note: To accompany Flagpole’s list of our 10 favorite albums of the year (see p. 8), we invited representatives from some of our favorite local record stores to weigh in with their own 2018 favorites and report on their shops’ best-selling releases of the year.

Nate Mitchell (Wuxtry Records) FAVORITE NEW RELEASES: 1. The Nude Party: The Nude Party This motley crew of former Appalachian College stoner buds picked up the classic-rock torch from mid-period Stones, Loadedera Velvets, CCR and Bob Dylan at his smirkiest and knocked out a solid gem of a debut. These cats seem poised at the cusp of becoming young America’s new boy band who are also a bar band.

2. Khruangbin: Con Todo El Mundo Slippery grooves, crisp breakbeats, trebly/reverb-y surf-psych guitar instrumentals with a beguiling spaghetti western feel made this album a treat to keep coming back to.

3. Tangents: New Bodies Picking up right where the 2016 full-length Stateless left off, these Australians exemplify post-rock in a clean and sophisticated Can/ Tortoise/Four Tet mode. Lots of tight and tricky hypnotic overlapping parts that feel nicely sculpted but not forced.

4. Eric Copeland: Trogg Modal, Vol. 1 Lonnie Holley: Mith A solo joint from one of the dudes responsible for neo-nowave antagonists Black Dice, although this steers away from stirring the tsuris and serves you a clunky, chunky stew of lo-fi synth and drum machine doodles.

5. Circuit Circuit: Circuit Circuit This disc was literally dropped into my lap from Jacksonville, FL folks passing through the Classic City and sounds like an oddball blend of Silver Apples’ cosmic theremin oscillations, drunkenly lethargic Kid Koala samples and scratches, and Mr. Oizo’s puppet-approved flat beats.

Nearly every week, there was some hidden gem to be discovered, or an album came out that lived up to its hype. The amount of hard work, creativity and care that most of y’all dedicated to your projects did not go unnoticed by me. A lot of the time, people will ask me what I’ve been listening to, and my mind generally goes blank. This past year, though, I could easily rattle off a list of killer local records in any conversation. So, thank you.

NOISES ON: Eric Hat, aka Eric the Hat, continues to dump things onto the internet at a volume heretofore reserved for the artistically compulsive, those who lack editorial skill and old folks digitizing photographs. All of which he may be, or may be doing, but whatever, the man has skills. To wit: the new two-song event Helen Hunt. The first track, “Track 01,” is a deeply groovy thing with a halftrap/half-chill top rhythm, but there’s an ongoing guitar rhythm in the back that, at least for a few seconds, brought to mind The Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs.” Not for a long time, though, and it’s far from overt, but it’s there. The second track, “track 03 of something…also for Seth,” is obviously a dumped tune, but Eric Hat even as a working sketch I dig it, as it’s mostly along the same lines as the first track, although it’s slightly more shrill and its mood is more elevated. CHEART BREAKER: Athens songwriter and UGA Music Business Program student Xander Ward released his debut single a few weeks ago. The track, a fairly straightforward and very modern pop tune named “But Her Eyes,” would slide frictionlessly alongside any soft-eyed and tender- hearted tune likely to cross your iHeartRadio app.

Those expectations changed what should have been one of the most exciting seasons in a long time into a fairly droll affair with fans, including me, waving off multi-touchdown victories over major rivals as matters of course. It’s an understandable and not unexpected development for a program with Georgia’s goals and competing at Georgia’s level, but it still sucks when we can’t appreciate obvious greatness because we know it could’ve been just a little better.

Here are some facts about the 2018 Georgia football team: It won 11 games this season for only the 11th time in the program’s 115-year history. It is one of the highest-scoring teams in program history, averaging 38.7 points per game. It will play in Georgia’s 10th Sugar Bowl, the program’s first in a decade, and face a historically great power program, Texas, that Georgia hasn’t faced in 34 years.

Now, here are some feelings about the 2018 Georgia football team: It would be a national title favorite right now if not for an inexplicably poor performance against LSU and/or (another) late collapse against Alabama, this time in the SEC Championship Game. Its Sugar Bowl performance won’t matter, because it’s a consolation prize. It will be remembered as a major disappointment in the minds of many fans.

It’s difficult to reckon these feelings with those facts. By any objective measure you can find—record, S&P+, FPI, final ranking—this is one of the best teams in UGA football history. But, subjectively, there was always something that felt a little off about this team. The Dawgs dominated every game this season aside from the two they lost—and even the Alabama game featured

The kinds of willful microaggressions you describe can be a larger indicator of someone’s true feelings than any vast statement they make about people of color or the

deserve to have a fundamental part of your sense of self picked at for his amusement.

For example, I do not mess with white people who think America is post-racial, because I know that we won’t see eye to eye on myriad issues related to racism, so why bother put myself through all the “debating” and gaslighting?

The fact that you describe some of his actions as willful brings me the greatest concern. He’s ignorant, to a degree, but at the end of the day, he might just be having fun. Participants should: - Be between the ages of 18-49 years old; - Have not yet received the current season flu vaccine; - Have not had the flu this season - Have no diagnoses of asthma, heart or lung disease, kidney or liver disease, diabetes or anemia - Have no autoimmune disease diagnoses or allergies to flu vaccine; - Have no recent treatment with immunosuppressive or steroid medications or have a weakened immune system; Eligible subjects will receive the nasal spray influenza vaccination and undergo three blood draws on different days. Subjects will receive the influenza vaccine for free and receive up to $90 for participating in the study.

The study will be conducted at the Clinical and Translational Research Unit on the UGA Health Sciences Campus. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Ted Ross.

Gothic Gore FORMER ATHENIAN DOUG HOLLINGSWORTH HAS WRITTEN A MASTERPIECE

By Pete McCommons pete@flagpole.com Everybody who writes a Southern Gothic novel is announced as the next Flannery O’Connor, so that by now we have so many Flannerys running around that the advent of another doesn’t mean much.

Maybe that’s just as well, because otherwise I would be saying that Doug Hollingsworth is the latest peacock on the farm.

Doug has written a novella, i.e. a short novel, that is the first of an interrelated trilogy. If you have been around a certain part of Athens for a pretty long time, you probably know Doug, although he has been living in Brooklyn for a while now, using

his design skills at top New York museums. That’s not really a surprise, because in Athens he designed ads for Flagpole. He played guitar in the Star Room Boys and has worked with Kathy Kirbo’s reef-protection program.

Doug’s novella is titled The Work, and it is stunning—illuminated by his eerie, woodcut-like illustrations, too. I’m no professor of English, but in addition to being blown away by this book, I can also see a little of how Doug did it—his ear for language, his eye for telling details, his sense of humanity caught in the forces of good and evil, with the cosmic shooting right into the everyday.

Not everybody wants to read a book about a God-struck South Georgia taxidermist, but if you pick this one up and get through the first few pages of exactly replicated, below-the-gnat-line, mushmouth drawl, you’ll be caught up in the world of Ansel Bragg—a world pretty much limited to Utinahica, GA. (Look it up.) This book is layered, and it goes deep. Maybe if we’re throwing around comparisons, we ought to go on and mention Mr. Faulkner, too,

because there are lots of levels working at once here.

The publisher describes The Work as Southern Gothic and magic realism, and it’s true—not because Hollingsworth imposes those qualities on us, but because he elucidates what’s already there. Everything Southern is gothic (“portentously gloomy or horrifying”), with a lot of magic snapping around, too.

Ansel runs the Hide ’n Skeet Taxidermy and Gun Range in Utinahica, supported by a cast of finely drawn characters who amble in and out of the action. But be warned that this is not “Hee Haw.” These people are Middle Georgia hicks, it is true, but the power of Hollingsworth’s writing is such that Ansel encompasses “the human heart in conflict with itself” as fully as anybody in Yoknapatawpha or Milledgeville.

Maybe there is some common denominator in music and art that translates directly to writing. Whatever, John Douglas Hollingsworth has jumped off the subway and hit us upside the head with the human condition.

The plot is simple: Ansel gets caught up in a masterpiece of his taxidermy art that ultimately runs him afoul of God and man, as well as the natural world, including his wife, Hazel.

And Doug’s words spin their magic over us so that these rednecks rise into the realm of great literature, because this becomes not just a story, but life itself. Our own lives, our own world hang in the balance, along with the fate of Ansel Bragg. Well, OK; I guess that’s an exaggeration. But, dammit, life, if you take it seriously enough, is an exaggeration.

That’s what weirds me out about mild-mannered Doug Hollingsworth. How in the hell does he do this? How does he take the same words we know—OK, I had to look up some of them—and make this man and his surroundings come alive? How did Flannery and Bill do it? There’s the magic realism for you: These words, these bitcoins of our common parlance, glow with an inner light that transcends the sum of their little parts. Hollingsworth himself is the taxidermist, wresting liveliness off the inert page.

The Work and Doug’s two other novellas are published by Casa Forte Press, recently established in Decatur by former Athenian and international journalist Helena Cavendish de Moura. The Work will be for sale at Little Kings at 6 p.m. this Friday, Dec. 21. Hollingsworth will be there to sign copies and visit with old friends and new readers. The affair will conclude in time for everybody to stroll down to the Manhattan for Calvin Smith’s annual Christmas show at 8 p.m. f
