Birds and Barrow Go Bye-Bye PLUS, MEANS ADDRESSES RUMORS AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

• The proposed 12-month ban on electric scooters certainly got Bird’s attention. Company representative Cheyanne Woodyard showed up at the meeting to offer to work with ACC. Too little, too late—after unceremoniously dumping hundreds of scooters on Athens, leading to problems with people illegally riding without helmets and on sidewalks and leaving them everywhere, commissioners were in no mood to grant Bird’s request to table the moratorium.

“I’m a big fan of ‘em, but I agree there is a significant public safety issue,” Link said.

“And I also have a problem with the way this company has done business, coming into this community and just dropping them on the public right-of-way.”

The ban passed unanimously. While it’s in place, county officials will craft regulations, then issue a request for proposals from e-scooter companies, so expect the scooters to return next year.

• The commission voted unanimously to accept the Gordy family’s donation of three houses on Reese Street and convey them to the Athens Land Trust. Those houses—which could have been demolished as part of redeveloping The Varsity and surrounding properties—include the

Mack-Burney house, home of Athens’ second black dentist and a noted black educator. Commissioners cut a deal with the Gordys to save the houses and put some zoning restrictions in place to protect the surrounding neighborhood.

Writer and activist Kimberly Davis, local NAACP president Alvin Sheats and civil rights lawyer Ken Dious told commissioners that the Mack-Burney House should be turned into a museum of African-American history and culture, and the local black community should be involved. “Once again, rather than invite our community or representatives of our community to the table, our culture and history is on the menu,” Davis said.

“We were in real estate negotiations,” Commissioner Jerry NeSmith said. “That’s why it was kinda secret.”

But now, commissioners said they welcome community involvement in discussing the future of the MackBurney House. And, they pointed out, the contract with the Gordys specifically lists a museum as a future use of the Mack-Burney House. (The other two will be renovated and sold or rented as affordable housing.)

As then-Sen. John Kerry once said of Iraq War funding, “I voted for it before I voted against it.” Athens-Clarke County Commissioner Melissa Link voted to put a new courthouse on the next SPLOST list, just so she could vote against it in January.

A SPLOST 2020 citizen advisory committee had yet to start meeting on Dec. 4, but most commissioners think the $72 million judicial center is so important, they wanted to go ahead and put it on the list that will go before voters next fall anyway.

The current courthouse is overcrowded and doesn’t meet modern security needs; building a new one would also allow ACC to consolidate far-flung departments in the current courthouse and sell those other properties. A $44 million affordable housing fund and some financing costs are also part of the “designated projects” package.

The argument for designating projects is that the citizen committee will know beforehand what commissioners, who make the final decision, consider essential.

Others, though, think it deprives citizens— and incoming commissioners—of the opportunity to vet those projects.

“I feel it’s a vote of no confidence in my ability to join this body and be part of the team,” said Commissioner-elect Russell Edwards. “And it hurts a little bit.”

Link wanted to table a vote on the designated projects, but only Commissioner Mariah Parker would join her. So Link voted “yes” on a motion to pass the list. Being on the winning side will allow her to make a motion to reconsider at the next voting meeting—when Edwards and commissioners-elect Patrick Davenport, Tim Denson and Ovita Thornton will be behind the rail.

In other business:

Means acknowledged that watching a student act out can be “jarring” for other students, but said there’s also a flip side: While he hears from (usually white) parents about classroom disruption, some parents of color want to know why students with IEPs are disproportionately black boys. He attributed the disparity to trauma experienced in the home and said teachers are undergoing professional development to learn how to “connect with” students from low-income and minority families, while also setting high expectations for those students.

“We talk about building that social/ emotional capacity of kids,” he said. “Do we need to step back and talk about the social/ emotional capacity of the organization?”

Parents Press Means on Classroom Discipline, Advanced Classes About 50 people attended a question-and-answer session with Clarke County School Superintendent Demond Means at Gaines Elementary School on Monday, Dec. 3, where much of the discussion focused on whether students with behavioral problems are disrupting classrooms, specifically at Whit Davis Elementary.

One mother told Means that her 8-yearold son is scared to go to school because of another child’s outbursts. “It’s like a Benny Hill movie” when teachers and administrators chase after him, she said. Meanwhile, she said the other 20 students are “evacuated” to another room that’s not equipped for teaching, where they watch cartoons until the situation is resolved. Another woman who identified herself as a substitute teacher said students have screamed at her and thrown chairs.

Means said students with individual education plans (IEPs)—which can include those with autism, a learning disorder or a physical disability in addition to those with emotional or behavioral disorders—must be in the “least restrictive environment,” which usually means an ordinary classroom.

The issue of discipline is intertwined with teacher retention, as some attendees asked Means why so many teachers— about 15 percent last year—are leaving the district. Means said he wants to see exit-interview data, but added that Clarke County is a hard district to teach in because of its diverse demographics and isn’t for everyone.

“Literally, the statement has been, ‘I can’t reach these kids.’ So I think it’s a twoway street when we talk about capacity,” he said. “You have to be resilient and ready to persist in a district like this.”

Concerning capacity, Means assured attendees that the district has plenty of resources, despite recent expenditures on AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) training and University of Virginia consultants. For example, Whit Davis has added a second behavioral specialist, he said.

“If there’s a request for staff, we’ll provide the staff,” he said. “Sometimes, it comes down to, it’s difficult to hire people and get them to come to Clarke County.”

At another town hall meeting the following day at Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary, parents and teachers asked about rumors that Means is considering dismantling advanced and accelerated classes in middle and high schools. Were that to happen, parent Katrina Evans told Means, families would pull their children out of public school, and teachers would leave the district for jobs elsewhere.

Means denied the rumor. He said he is concerned about whether the district is serving all children, noting, as he has many times before, that while 49 percent of the students are African American, less than 5

percent of those in gifted classes are African American. He wants to make sure all children are exposed to “rigorous academic instruction.” He said he doesn’t want to “live in a world of rumors,” suggesting that parents first discuss their concerns with the principal of their child’s school before going further.

Another parent said that the International Baccalaureate program was academically rigorous and it was eliminated.

Means said when he arrived in August 2017, he asked whether the program was being implemented with a necessary level of rigor, adding that a group of teacher leaders and community members decided to end it. The IB program had no high-school component and no metric for measuring its middle-school success.

A parent asked if the AVID methodology was brought in to replace the IB program. Means said that 18 of 21 schools bought in to AVID. He touted the program as helping teachers, and said he has walked by classrooms and seen teachers in every class teaching in an “equitable, interactive way,” and also has seen changes in young people. Teachers who engage in AVID “say it’s changing them,” Means said.

Neither Clarke Central High School nor Chase Street Elementary is following AVID. Earlier this month, state Superintendent Richard Woods said that Chase Street Elementary was among the highest performing Title I (high poverty) schools in the state.

A parent said he has talked with teachers who say they hate AVID, but that people are scared to express negative opinions, fearing they will lose their jobs. Means suggested the teachers talk to their principals about their concerns.

The superintendent wants the district to become more data driven. As part of that push, his administration has spent $2.5 million on an English Language Arts curriculum for the system’s 14 elementary schools. When he arrived in Athens, he was surprised to learn schools were using different reading programs. Now Means is turning his attention to the district’s math program, with the goal of students receiving “rigorous instruction.”

Means also said that with the district’s $1.2 million surplus, his administration has hired an additional 11 or 12 teachers.

Election Board’s Closed Meeting Was Illegal The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections broke state law when it went into executive session in September to discuss opening an early voting site at Cedar Shoals High School, according to the ACC Attorney’s office.

The attorney’s office concluded the board was in violation of the Georgia Open Meetings act on Sept. 4, when the BOE decided to go to executive session to discuss “personnel matters” since more poll workers would be needed for an additional early voting location. Under the Open Meetings Act, the board is permitted to go to executive session if it involves personnel matters.

However, other topics were discussed, and

the personnel exemption is meant to cover discussions about specific employees or candidates for positions, not a need to hire more personnel in general.

Assistant county attorney John Hawkins told the board it needed to amend minutes of the Sept. 4 executive session; discuss and vote upon having an upcoming open session to discuss whether to gather data on voting sites for East Athens during the 2019 election; and attend a training session on open meetings and records. Lastly, Hawkins recommended the board ask the county attorney’s office for guidance on open meetings and records if needed in the future.

According to minutes amended during the Dec. 4 meeting, the executive session included a discussion about the Cedar Shoals High School as an early voting site and the history of reviewing Eastside locations as possible early voting sites.

There was another discussion regarding board member Jesse Evans’ contact with the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office about offering the additional early voting location.

Tensions on the board continued at the Dec. 4 meeting.

All board members stated they were in favor of adding an Eastside early voting location during the John Barrow executive session when discussing the minutes. However, Evans said that was not the case, and that some other board members were not in favor of having an Eastside early voting location in 2018 during the September executive session. They all agreed on opening one in 2019.

Board chairman Charles Knapper and member Alison McCullick said that they and other board members felt the Cedar Shoals location was brought up at the last

minute. “Finding a location is one thing.

Preparing a secure election is another,” McCullick said.

Evans said this idea was not pitched at the last minute. “I’ve been talking about this since 2017,” he said. “Now, they’re doing damage control stuff because the very thing they were preventing [from being] public in that executive session is now becoming public,” he said. “They’re trying to give that a facelift so it doesn’t look as bad as it is.”

Barrow Loses SoS Bid With 48 percent of the vote, Democrat John Barrow of Athens lost the race to become Georgia’s secretary of state to Republican Brad Raffensperger in a Dec. 4 runoff.

“Though the outcome was not what we had wanted, what we’re working for is more important than ever: elections that are as fair and as accurate as they are secure,” Barrow said in a statement. “In these polarized times that may seem like a never ending struggle, but it’s a struggle that’s always worth the fight.”

In a runoff for a seat on the Public Service Commission, which regulates utilities like Georgia Power, Republican incumbent Chuck Eaton defeated Democrat Lindy Miller by a similar 52–48 margin.

Clarke County gave 76 percent of its votes to Barrow and 75 percent to Miller.

That was higher than Stacey Abrams’ 70 percent in November, but turnout was just 26 percent locally, compared to 62 percent of registered voters in November. Statewide turnout was 23 percent. [BA] f

The Trailers THE BODIES OF WALTON COUNTY

Everyone knew about the Pontiac and the tow rope, the mica mine, the airstrip, the automatic weapons, the biker gangs, the mayoral campaign, the unruly son, the lawsuits, the portraits featuring him astride a horse and dressed in Confederate uniform, the shootings, the manhunts, the bodies.

Junior, the son of the man in the big house, had once been in prison for manslaughter for shooting somebody at a house two doors down from the one Ben now owned.

Everybody knew it—the fact colored the town.

Ben found his neighbor in the abandoned Baptist Church, unpacking books. “I need to ask you,” Ben said.

“Who did Junior shoot?”

ally, they said, got shot. The last picture in the book was his Loganville High School portrait.

Ben closed the photo album and walked back to his house. He took a shower, then went to see his neighbor on the other side—an elder at Ben’s church. He’d grown up around here and had come home to start a study center for Christians and others. Ben had just bought his house to be a part of this community. It was still in the early stages, and no one was sure yet how it would go. High Shoals had been a wild place for so long.

There’s a lot of security at the government building in Walton County, because that’s where the courthouse is. The flag my husband designed in eighth grade flies in front of the building, underneath the state and American flags. I pointed at it as we walked in from the parking lot.

“That’s the flag your father designed,” I told the kids, “because he is a true patriot.”

When it was our turn to go through the metal detector, my 4-year-old looked at the guard. “My father designed the American flag,” he told him.

“That so?” said the guard. “Good for him.” f

In the early 1990s, there was a contest to design the Walton County flag, because counties need flags. Eighth graders all over Walton painted rectangles of cotton and rivers, farmers and numbers. My husband, Ben, was not one of these enthusiastic flag-making eighth graders. He forgot about the contest until right before the judging. He scribbled a design in pencil on a sheet of torn-out spiral notebook paper and turned it in, a burr of paper still clinging to its edge.

He won.

Two years later, Ben played basketball at Loganville High School with a kid—a tall, friendly guy who had an air about him that was different. Part of it was that the kid came and went from the school multiple times a year, because his mom moved a lot. His family life seemed unstable.

He’d been gone again from the school for a few weeks already when the news trickled in that, wherever he’d landed, he’d been shot and killed there. He would not be coming back to the team.

Ben wondered how they’d gotten the trailers back here to begin with. There was no road.

He climbed up into one of the trailers, through what used to be the wall of the back bedroom. Clothes moldered alongside stacks of magazines and unopened mail.

An alarm clock shaped like a baseball lay in a corner, its cord yellow and peeling. The hall floor had fallen in, so Ben scooted his feet across two struts. The place smelled brown and rotten. In the main room was a volcano of junk: plastic cups, old towels, gnarls of Christmas lights, a coffee maker.

Balanced on top of this pile, like it had been put there on purpose, was a photo album.

Ben opened it. The baby on the first page grew up into a good-looking little leaguer, and then a 12-year-old having a birthday, and then into the kid Ben played basketball with at school—the one who moved around a lot and, eventu-

The house was covered with asbestos siding and linoleum; the 3 acres, with kudzu. Ben took breaks from hacking at the kudzu he’d bought to explore the 5 acres next door. There was no path, so Ben used his machete to cut his way through. After a few minutes, he reached the middle of the 5 acres. He could no longer see the cleared edge of his property, or the peak of the roof of his new house.

He went back in the woods to try to figure it out.

There was a man standing in the forest on the other side of the trailers—a rangy man with lank black hair.

Ben had been looking at the trailers and had not seen him standing over there in the bushes.

“No,” said Ben. “I bought the house next door and was just walking around.”

“They’re mine,” said the man, like Ben had argued about it.

“OK,” said Ben. He raised his machete by way of goodbye and walked back the way he’d come.

It’s Tariff Time HISTORY SHOWS TAXING IMPORTS CAN BACKFIRE

The Democratic resurgence under Woodrow Wilson between 1912–1920 brought lower tariffs and an income tax that made tariff duties less critical to federal revenue.

When Republicans regained power after World War I, however, protectionism was again the order of the day. The Fordney-McCumber Tariff of 1922 was supposed to stimulate recovery from a postwar economic downturn. In reality, its extended duties on agricultural imports actually cost American farmers dearly in already depressed European markets. At the same time, its higher duties on many other imports denied war-ravaged European nations precious income from trade that they needed to boost their economies and repay the U.S. for loans and credits issued during World War I. The new tariff law made recovery doubly difficult for Germany, which bore the additional burden of making

Hilarious as this scene may be in the film, it recurs frequently in real life, not simply in classrooms but in many other settings, whenever the subject of tariffs comes up. It is both ironic and unfortunate that many Americans find tariffs too boring to care about when, as our history shows, their most critical consequences—nationally and globally—are often wholly unanticipated.

One of the first major pieces of legislation enacted by Congress after the ratification of the Constitution was the Tariff of 1789, which was meant to raise revenue for the new republic while safeguarding New England’s nascent manufacturing economy.

Northern manufacturers were clearly benefiting from protections against competition with foreign imports, while the Southern cotton, rice and tobacco planters who accounted for more than two-thirds of the value of all American exports were doubly disadvantaged by the tariffs. Not only were they paying tariff-inflated prices for the implements and supplies needed to produce their crops, but they were also forced to sell Tariffs… tariffs… anyone? them in foreign markets depressed or rendered hostile by American import duties.

The nation’s leading automotive exporter by value is a BMW manufacturing facility that opened in 1994 near Spartanburg, SC, where it now accounts for 10,000 jobs and 1,400 vehicles per day, roughly 70 percent of them destined for foreign markets. After flourishing for a quarter-century, BMW’s South Carolina operation now seems to face a cloudy future. Trump’s threatened tariff on imported auto parts—which account for roughly 70 percent of what goes into BMW’s SUVs—would inflate production costs. Also, roughly one-third of the vehicles assembled in Spartanburg go to China, which has boosted tariffs on American-made vehicles to 40 percent in retaliation for Trump’s increased duties on Chinese imports, forcing the company to announce price increases on some of its China-bound SUVs and prompting talk of shifting some production to China.

As of early November, BMW estimated that the trade war had already cost it some $337 million.

China has long maintained a trading advantage over the U.S. by strategically devaluing its currency in order to hold down the prices of its exported goods.

Ironically, since Trump announced tariffs on Chinese imports, the yuan has fallen to an 11-year low against the dollar, helping to keep those imports cheaper for American consumers and—temporarily, at least—blunting some of the effects of Trump’s tariffs. The yuan cannot be allowed to fall forever, of course, especially with China’s massive debt bubble threatening to burst. Beyond that, a sustained trade war would take a much bigger bite out of China’s GDP and dampen its growth rate significantly.

What is bad for China isn’t necessarily good for the U.S. or the rest of the world, however. China has been projected to account for nearly one-third of all economic expansion between 2016–2021, so if it should sink into a major recession, the effect on the global economy may be more toxic than salutary. Already, Germany is reporting that its economy shrank by 2 percent in the third quarter of 2018, due in part to a falloff in exports to China, whose economy is experiencing a slowdown in response to U.S. tariffs.

Smaller “emerging market” economies around the world can be affected more critically by tariffs imposed by major trading nations. Trump’s ostensible effort to force the release of an American hostage by doubling tariffs on steel imported from Turkey has dramatically accelerated the decline in value of the Turkish lira. This has rattled investors, including the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System for public employees, which is the largest institutional shareholder in a Turkish exchange-traded fund that has lost half its value since the year began.

If Trump’s tariffs (and the threats thereof) are more than a temporary ploy, a depressed market for exports and higher prices for U.S. consumers are the least of the devils we know we can expect. But, as our history with tariffs makes abundantly clear, it is the potentially even more devilish devils we don’t expect that might do the most damage—both at home and abroad. f James C. Athens Musicians Dish on Their 2018 Faves Editor’s note: To kick off Flagpole’s year-end coverage, we reached out to Athens musicians to ask about their favorite albums, concerts, moments and movements of 2018. Next week, we’ll unveil our music staff’s favorite local albums of the year.

Sometimes, you’ll hear singers describe themselves as “Nashville-friendly.” We all know what that means. What does it mean to be “Athens-friendly”? How would you begin to articulate the tonal diversity of the Classic City into one, singular sound? Well. It’s weird.

Our favorite experience was the house show featuring the Texas-based industrial noise band Street Sects. Held on election night on Atlanta Avenue, there were probably 10 people in total in attendance. By the time the show started, all of us could barely see each other due to the absurd amount of fog the band had filled the house with.

Strobe and police lights flashed violently through this fog while they played this small group of fans a phenomenal private show that created an atmosphere akin to a hell-like abyss. Oh, and the frontman surprise-blasted us with a leaf blower at one point.

That’s what I’d like to see in 2019. Ya know?

My Top Five Southeast Regional Pop Songs of 2018 Hank Sullivant, “Sunday Morning Drive”: Complex yet catchy epic from Athens’ own Sullivant. The whole album is stunning, musically and lyrically—a solid 30 minutes of beauty.

The Glands, “Possibilities”: Finally getting their Rhythm due outside of Athens with their releases on New West Records, The Glands yank the heartstrings hard with this slow-burning gem.

New Man, “Little Windows”: Blowing my mind on the Georgia Theatre rooftop earlier this month, Nashville’s New Man take the Spector beat and layer hook after hook over it and crafting a mini pop masterpiece.

Young Valley, “’Til I Cross your Mind”: Saw these Jackson, MS fellas kill this tune at The Nick in Birmingham, AL recently—three-part harmony and all. Killer LP out on Dial Back Sound.

Belle Adair, “Long Fade Out”: Sheer shimmer.

Belle Adair hails from Florence, AL, but has shades of Scotland (Teenage Fanclub), Canada (Klaatu) and California (The Byrds) in its hushed, lush sound.

Nihilist Cheerleader Looking back on 2018, we have been most excited about the growth and increasing recognition of the Athens hip-hop scene. Just to name a few, acts like The YOD, Caulfield and Seline Haze have been really inspiring to watch make themselves heard, and we can’t wait to see more.

One of our most memorable shows was having the opportunity to play with The YOD, Caulfield and Shade at the 40 Watt in September of 2018. We think it makes a lot of sense to curate shows where hip-hop and punk acts share the stage. With the political climate at hand, we want to play shows with acts that share a similar passion for articulating the issues we see and experience, and use art and music to explore this.

Michael Potter It’s amazing and inspiring to see so many extremely talented women making progressive, boundary-pushing music and artwork. I saw dynamic and moving performances from Cloud Powers (Goddess Complex), Sahada Buckley, Monique Osorio, Annie Leeth, Shannon Perry (Wet Garden), Lee Adcock (Casio Adcock), Ariel Ackerly, Sarah Swillum (Jim Jim), Madeline Polites (Immaterial Possession), Maria Kindt (Classical Revolution) and Almond Milf, just to name a few. I would be remiss not to mention Marie Uhler’s fantastic Experimentique show series, which focuses on female-identifying and non-binary performers experimenting with new sounds and ways of playing.

different waves, relishing the ride, all the while adapting to what’s next. I have and I haven’t, because it’s what you make of it. Something exciting and unexpected is just around the corner as the populace refreshes, the old-timers reach deeper, the lore and lure is cast surer and wider.

I never wish while tucked in at Caledonia or entranced in Flicker or lulled through Hush Hush that scouts and agents or scale and share were the MacGuffin to the muse. We have something stellar in Athens. Feed it.

Grant Cowan Athens gets a lot of praise for being weird. To be blunt, it also gets a lot of flack for it. A twentysomething high out of his mind rolling around on the stage floor of Go Bar fiddling with some knobs isn’t “weird”—it’s just bad. And to that degree, I can appreciate the disconnect. But that is not the Athens music scene I’ve come to love.

This year alone, I’ve been able to experience the powerhouse brass stylings of Misnomer, the punk-rock sounds of Nihilist Cheerleader, the pensive and soulful musings of singer-songwriter Andrew Blooms and the percussive funk of Partials. Within walking distance, I was able to hear the heart-filled songwriting of Cicada Rhythm, the backyard dream-pop of Neighbor Lady and the structured grunge of

There were really awesome out-of-town bands that we got to play with (Kikagaku Moyo, Octopus Project, Sunwatchers). Face/Off is always a blast to do. The Turn Up the Vote rally was inspiring and exciting. My favorite show this year was the Dirty Athens Day Party. Mainly because my mom was visiting from Japan and got spring-break wasted off half a glass of wine, as everyone in Double Ferrari can attest to. (In her defense, she was still very jetlagged.) All the local acts were amazing and very nice to Mama Uno as she giggled and eventually crouched in a corner.

Jack Webster, Wieuca Will and I went to see The Mummies at Popfest this year.

Many of the attendees were chucking beers onstage during their performance. The band responded by scolding the beer-throwers for wasting their drinks, then finished the thrown beverages themselves. To say the least, there was a lot of love in the Georgia Theatre that night.

and whenever possible, he tries to interact with each of them personally.

According to him, smooth jazz draws an older and more diverse crowd than is typically found downtown, giving them someplace to congregate and enjoy live entertainment.

Prior to starting the local series, Segar says he would drive to Atlanta every weekend to see live jazz.

Later, he used connections made there to bring in guest musicians for his shows.

Now, he says musicians from all over contact him to play in Athens. “Athens is on the map right now for smooth jazz, and we love it,” Segar says.

Segar also still hosts his popular radio show, and says his favorite part is the 5 o’clock hour, when he asks listeners to light candles and put out door signs that say, “Do not disturb,” since “DJ Segar’s on your radio,” he says.

His goal is to play mellow music that calms his listeners, offering them a “stress-free radio show.” He boasts, “If you listen to my show enough, you’ll become smooth—cooking smooth, driving smooth.” Segar says there’s a lot of overlap in his radio listeners and concertgoers, as he invites each crowd to experience the other.

The radio show is available online for live streaming, and Segar regularly streams it on Facebook Live. He also posts a weekly list of song picks on social media for his followers to listen to.

Sax Appeal DJ SEGAR CELEBRATES 50 SMOOTH JAZZ SHOWS

S

ince moving to Athens from New York eight years ago, DJ Dwain Segar has made it his mission to make smooth jazz a staple in the local music scene. Immediately after arriving in Athens, Segar approached local radio station WXAG 92.7 FM and 1470 AM about starting a smooth jazz show. They liked the idea, and he soon became the host of “The Segar Jazz Hour.” Later, the show became what it is today, “The Segar Jazz Affair,” broadcasting from 4–7 p.m. every Saturday.

“There were a lot of people here in Athens that knew of smooth jazz, but never had the listening ear for it, because they didn’t have it on radio,” Segar says.

About a month after launching the radio show, Segar decided he wanted to host a live smooth jazz series in town. The now-closed Aftermath was the first venue for his shows, which featured rotating guest artists. He then moved the performances to Omega Bar on Atlanta Highway for about three years before finding his current home at The Foundry. Segar has hosted the monthly series there for the past four years, and he says it’s the ideal place for his audience and performers.

On Dec. 16, Segar celebrates the concert’s 50th edition with a performance by saxophonist Tony Exum Jr. and his band. The show will also feature live poetry by Hazel Roach and artwork by Broderick Flanigan.

Segar hosts the show once a month. It’s “two sets, always on Sunday, always at The Foundry,” Segar says. At most shows, there’s also a poetry reading between the two sets. Segar says he enjoys meeting audience members,

favorite contemporary musicians being Marion Meadows and Kim Waters. “Smooth jazz is just so relaxing—it’s very therapeutic,” Segar says.

When he’s not working his day job at J’s Bottle Shop, Segar is busy promoting all things smooth jazz. He plans for his radio show and concerts to grow and continue to bring in a variety of well-known jazz musicians as guests.

“It’s just so encouraging to know that I’m doing something positive for the community,” Segar says. f

Right now, the site is busy getting product around with my aunts and uncles. Anyway, I liked it. He’s back to bands—so, if you’ve got stuff listed with them, done playing shows in Athens for the rest of the year, but go ahead and get in touch—and is hosting a big sale of all there’s hardly any doubt he’ll be back to his full schedule the items they purchased outright. It’s hard to remember soon. If you’ve gotta see him, though, he’s playing the sometimes, but back in 2000, when the site launched, it was difficult for bands to accept credit cards and reach fans all over the world from one digital location.

Athensmusic.net was dedicated to more than sales, though, as its owners—Jeff Montgomery and Troy Aubrey—each maintained a personal commitment to being a beacon shining out the gospel of Athens to the world. And each, in his own way, still does. Montgomery told me via email, “We were a great central hub for Athens music for quite a while, but it is just too challenging to try to keep up and try to sell all the digital, physical and streaming music options from so many Athens bands. So, now we can just enjoy and support the scene in other ways. HAZARDS OF THE JOB: I’ve taught myself to eat most things as part of this gig, but there are exceptions. I keep trying to like menudo, I can’t quite hack natto, and I really, really despise bananas. I know they’re nature’s perfect food. The problem

Bajan means Barbadian, which in turn means meat plus sauce plus rice and peas—simple, hearty stuff that warms your stomach and will make your mouth happy. Sure, you could get a hamburger, hot wings, fried chicken or fried fish—catfish, tilapia or whiting, plus shrimp, all of which come with fries and coleslaw and are pretty good—a cheesesteak or chicken tenders, but you can get that stuff plenty of places.

What you can’t get everywhere Bajan Delight is oxtail, which is available from Kelly’s Jamaican and Rashe’s Cuisine fairly regularly but should be much excellent. There’s chicken, too, should you more widely eaten. Frutta Bowls is a franchise out of New Jersey that focuses on heathful, Instagrammable bowls that mostly have a

fruit base and a bunch of fruit toppings.

They don’t exactly feel like lunch, but maybe they do if you’re on your way to or just returned from the gym. You can get an açaí bowl (purplish-blue palm berries blended with banana and topped with more banana, granola, strawberries, pineapple, Nutella, ribbons of peanut butter, kiwi, blueberries, honey, coconut flakes and/or chia seeds), a pitaya bowl (hot pink dragonfruit blended with banana and/or whey protein and topped with most of the same stuff) or a kale bowl (kale blended with banana, whey protein, almond milk and/or pineapple and, once again, topped with the same kinds of things).

The bowls are undeniably attractive, and although the whole superfood thing is a bit overblown, they feel reasonably good for you, if a little on the sweet side and fairly icy in cool weather. If I had to pick, I’d go with the pitaya, which is less sweet and more tart. They’re also priced between $9–$11, which can feel steep given their size.

A better bet, should you not be into banana or desire some carbs to make your belly feel full, are the fancy toasts, which come in savory varieties as well as sweet ones. You can still get Nutella, banana, honey, peanut butter, strawberry and cacao nibs, but you can also get one called a Bravocado, spread with guacamole and sun-dried tomato pesto, sprinkled with salt and red pepper flakes and with a sliced hardboiled egg fanned out on top. It might be peak millennial, but it also tastes good.

The space seems oriented to pedestrians and lets you check out board games if you’re planning on hanging out for a while and don’t mind the sound of blenders whirring constantly in the background. Frutta Bowls also does catering, includes hot oatmeal bowls and smoothies on its menu, offers gluten-free options and protein bites, makes coffee, sells teas and kombuchas and has Wi-Fi. It’s open from 9 a.m.–9 p.m. every day. f

Boots Riley’s inventive script for Sorry to Bother You bested Can You Ever Forgive Me? and AFCC winner The Favourite for my Best Screenplay honors.

My choices for Best Documentary (Won’t Ethan Hawke finished behind Cage and You Be My Neighbor?) and Best Foreign Vice’s Christian Bale), and the late Jóhann Language Film (Roma; be sure to check Jóhannsson’s innovative soundtrack for out my second and third picks, The Guilty Mandy just barely beat John Carpenter and Shoplifters, when you get the chance) and company’s refreshed Halloween for my matched up with the AFCC winners. My Best Animated Feature proved tough, but Teen The Possession of Hannah Grace Titans Go! To the Movies defeated Incredibles 2 and AFCC winner Isle of Dogs. Eighth Grade and its star, Elsie Fisher, swept the two special categories, Best First Film and Breakthrough Performer, on my ballot.

2018 has already been a great year at the movies, and happily, it is not over yet.

THE POSSESSION OF HANNAH GRACE (R) The Possession of Hannah Grace is just the sort of middling horror movie that is not as bad as it seems without actually being any good.

Inexplicably released in theaters when other, better horror fare languishes on streaming services, The Possession of Hannah Grace appeared with no fanfare; I knew nothing of the film until my weekly check of local theater schedules.

Traumatized former police officer Megan Reed (Shay Mitchell, whom you might know from “Pretty Little Liars”) is in a morgue, alone, at night, when the body of Hannah Grace (dancer and contortionist Kirby Johnson) arrives. The rest of the competently pedestrian but not atrocious movie is rather stalely reminiscent of the far superior The Autopsy of Jane Doe, in which a mysterious corpse haunts a father-son coroner duo played by Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch. I would watch The Autopsy of Jane Doe, if I were you.

AFCC AWARDS 2018 The Atlanta Film Critics Circle, of which I am a member, announced the winners of its second annual awards Dec. 3. Last year, six of the films on my ballot made the final list; this year, only five of my picks wound up in the official 10, though the other films that made it would probably be in my top 20.

The AFCC went big for The Favourite, which I highly recommend seeing when it gets to Athens. The latest film from Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer) topped the list and picked up awards for Best Lead Actress (Olivia Colman, whom I placed third), Best Supporting Actress (Emma Stone), Best Ensemble Cast and Best Screenplay (again, my third pick). Best Director winner Alfonso Cuaron’s Netflix pet project, Roma, was my pick for best film; look for it on Netflix starting Dec. 14, or catch it in a theater if you are lucky. Cuaron also deservedly won Best Cinematography.

The other films that made both my and the AFCC’s top ten were A Quiet Place (my sixth), Eighth Grade (my fifth), Won’t You Be My Neighbor? (a stealthy contender for my top film that wound up third) and Black Panther (my eighth). My surprise was Mandy, which wound up No. 2 on my list. I also picked Nicolas Cage as my top actor (AFCC winner and Oscar frontrunner

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Hey Bonita, I have a couple of friends who are in the process of breaking up. They’ve been together nine years, and she found a photo of him kissing another woman. I’m friends with all three parties involved, but have been the closest with him over the years.

His soon-to-be-ex-wife reached out to me when she found this picture, but he quickly came to my apartment to relay his side of the story. He admits to lying about where he was the weekend the picture was taken, but says the photo itself is from a long time ago, and he drew boundaries with the woman in the picture after she spontaneously kissed him.

Since that conversation, I’ve also spoken to his wife, who detailed a few other incidents she was uncomfortable with towards the end of their relationship. I have not spoken to the other woman, as I don’t know her nearly as well as the couple.

You’re a friend to all three of these people, and I get the sense that you want to keep your personal relationship with at least one of these people as intact as possible. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of sleeping with married people, then I don’t blame you for not wanting the Other Woman to bring her morals into the studio with you. I fully support your decision not to make art with a person you feel can’t be trusted.

To be clear, though, I don’t necessarily judge her for being intimate with a married man, since it’s his job as the committed person to stay loyal to the marriage. I do feel that we all have a moral obligation to do

I’m sure this is a terrible situation to witness your friends going through, but I think it’s important to be mindful of what affects you and what is under your control. This couple’s whole world is going

right by one another, so while the Other Woman definitely did a bad thing, the failure of this marriage lies solely on the husband, if indeed he cheated.

I can see that you’re disappointed in and uncomfortable with what your guy friend did, and you want to make yourself clear about your position before he zeroes in on you as a shoulder to cry on. You could let him know that you are still his friend, but you just can’t provide an ear for this situation. I had to tell my brother something similar a few years ago, when he tried to enlist our entire family to help him win back his girlfriend, whom he cheated on.

I’m still friends with her, and I don’t want to hear anyone talking crap about a friend for making a move to protect herself and improve her life. I love my brother, but I still won’t listen to him cry about his bad decision. Buy the ticket, take the ride.

You don’t have to tell him that you know more about his behavior than he thinks, but you are absolutely allowed to create a boundary there and let dude know that you ain’t got time to dry the tears of a cheater. f

Hometown Genius SUPPORT PATRICK DEAN; ENJOY DAVE MARR AND ALSO THE MASTER CHORALE

Monster Man Genius can occur anywhere. Sometimes, it catapults onto the national stage and beyond. More often it stays closer to home, celebrated by those who see it up close.

Sometimes genius is not even recognized as such, because it is so familiar and unassuming—a goofy guy in a flannel shirt who is more interested in you than in himself, whose peers hold him in awe.

comic anthology, a special edition of their magazine Bezoar, that will be available for purchase online (bezoarcomic.bigcartel. com) and at Bizarro-Wuxtry. In addition to this monstrous compilation, the cartoonists are also selling back issues of Bezoar in digital format (gum.co/Bezoar), with all the proceeds going to support Patrick. Those proceeds, of course, can also include contributions of whatever amount that will all go directly to Patrick to help with his mounting expenses and his inability to continue earning a living for his family.

Solo, Up Close

Patrick Lee Dean is such a guy, and Flagpole over the years has been lucky that his cartoons and drawings and cover illustrations have given us a visual impact that has helped depict what Flagpole means in Athens. And, oh yes: monsters. P.L. Dean has created some of the most memorable and loveable monsters ever to leap or waddle across a page. His monsters are the perfect vehicle for Patrick’s wild and soaring wit, and they serve as disarming (no pun intended) avatars for his social commentary and keen insight into life’s colorful rambunctiousness, even when “scattered abroad in black and white.”

Now, our bright, inventive genius has been struck down by that monster of a disease, ALS, which we used to call “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” since it struck that athletic paragon. Patrick, a husband and a father, is a man in his prime, adding cruelty to this death sentence that has struck him.

His day job at Trader Joe’s is curtailed, and his medical expenses increase as his strength diminishes.

Patrick’s fellow cartoonists in Athens, Atlanta and Charlotte—those who can best appreciate his artistic accomplishments— have come forward to help their friend in his dire need. They are publishing a monster

Another genius who made a lasting contribution to Flagpole as an editor and writer is Dave Marr, now communications director for the intellectually fecund Willson Center for the Arts and Humanities on campus. With his degree in film studies, Dave has been a hard-working member of the Ciné board, and, of course, ever since he wandered into Athens more than two decades ago, he has been an integral part of the music scene as a singer and songwriter, still remembered for his work with the Star Room Boys and still enjoyed wherever and whenever he plays.

Now, Dave has decided to grace us with a solo entertainment—just Dave and his guitar—at the firehall on Prince Avenue this coming Saturday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. As he puts it: “I love Athens over the holidays, and I always intend to play a show around this time, but I often get too busy and forget to set it up. This year, I was reminded of what a beautiful place the Fire Hall is to listen to music, and Tommy Valentine at the ACHF was kind enough to let me book it on short notice. I can’t wait.”

Word to the wise: It’s a small space, and Dave is a huge talent. Come early.

Gloria in Atrium Amidst the plethora of events during this season is the Athens Master Chorale’s 30th-anniversary-season concert, Gloria in Excelsis Deo, in the Classic Center atrium at 4 p.m. this Sunday, Dec. 16. This big group of local singers and musicians, directed by the indefatigable Joe Napoli, puts a giant sleigh-load of work, time and collective genius into this free performance.

If you have never heard the Athens Master Chorale singing in the atrium, please go and experience a high point in this holiday season. f
