CCSD Will Rotate Chase Building to Solve Noise Complaints When Chase Street Elementary School’s second graders return from the holiday break in January, they’ll be entering their rooms from a different side. District officials plan to have the building—a modular unit with five classrooms housing 80 children and six teachers—picked up and rotated 180 degrees.

Officials are doing this to mitigate the effects of the building’s five HVAC units, which create noise so loud that nearby homeowners say it’s degrading their quality of life and their property values. One family threatened to sue the school district if a remedy wasn’t found.

After the neighbors complained, CCSD officials put the HVAC units on timers that turned them off at night and started them in the morning. The problem with doing so, said parents with children at Chase Street, is that the humidity that accumulated overnight caused carpeting to peel and books to

The school district then bought and installed individual dehumidifiers for the five rooms, which required school district employees to visit Chase Street twice daily to empty the dehumidifiers.

Those living near the temporary unit weren’t satisfied with the use of timers.

According to a press release issued by CCSD communications specialist Mary Wickwire, district officials decided not only to rotate the building at a cost of $40,000, but also to add $10,000 worth of landscaping to further tamp down the noise. The money is drawn from the plant services fund, which has a current balance of $482,344, the press release says.

The temporary building will likely remain at Chase Street Elementary until at least 2023. If the school’s burgeoning enrollment continues, an addition could be built onto the brick-and-mortar building.

Superintendent Demond Means has also proposed using sales-tax funds earmarked for renovating Clarke Middle School on a new elementary school off Tallassee Road instead to reduce overcrowding at Westside schools. [Rebecca McCarthy]

Athens Church That Split Over Gay Ministers Comes to Terms A squabble that began years ago in a local Presbyterian church has come to an end. The members of Alps Road Presbyterian have paid a settlement of $825,000, effectively, to the members of Central Presbyterian Church.

A majority of members and the minister of Central Presbyterian couldn’t agree with church doctrine allowing gay men and women to be ordained and serve as church leaders. Those who accepted the changes from the Presbyterian Church (USA) left the congregation and kept the name, while head minister Bob Bohler and church leaders renamed the church Alps Road Presbyterian and steered the remaining members to ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians.

For two years, the issue of who owned the campus on Alps Road festered and eventually landed in Clarke County Superior Court. The terms of a settlement couldn’t be agreed upon. Recently, though, Alps Road Presbyterian paid the Northeast Georgia Presbytery $825,000 for the property, which is valued at $3 million, according to the Athens-Clarke County tax assessor’s office. The presbytery then gave the money to a reconstituted Central Presbyterian, whose congregation has been meeting at the Presbyterian Student Center on Lumpkin.

“We’re relieved that it’s over,” said Central member Kathy Wisenbaker. She said that in addition to the money, Alps Road officials also gave the presbytery choir robes and hymnals, which have the Presbyterian Church (USA) symbol on them.

Sunday mornings, about 40 members gather at the student center for worship.

They have a minister, the Rev. Rindy Trouteaud; a choir director, Brenda Poss; a handbell choir director, David Boardman; and a parish associate, the Rev. Joe Berry.

“We’re going to be talking about how to use the money to further our mission,” said longtime Central member Sally Barnes, a member of the session. In the PCUSA, the “session” is composed of elected elders

and the ministers who govern the church.

“We want to be involved in the community again, to be out in the community and to share music,” Barnes said. “I don’t see us building anything.”

Central Presbyterian was instrumental in the late 1980s and 1990s in supporting Our Daily Bread, the Ark and the Athens Homeless Shelter, as well as the mission of the larger Presbyterian Church (USA).

Survey Says!

The University of Georgia, in conjunction with nine partners, is surveying thousands of Athens residents this fall and winter in hopes of creating a more accurate statistical snapshot of the community.

The surveys are the second phase of the Athens Wellbeing Project, an effort to collect data on issues like health, education, safety and housing that government agencies, nonprofits and other institutions can use to win accreditation, craft policy and apply for grants. The survey will also measure civic vitality—“how powerful or powerless [respondents] feel, how engaged they are with the community,” said program manager Benyamin Gardner.

Originally the brainchild of former Community Connection executive director Fenwick Broyard, the nonprofit was folded into United Way when Broyard left, and the data collected during the first phase didn’t quite make the splash it was intended to.

Round 2 will be bigger, though, with 4,500 survey postcards mailed out and student volunteers assisted by neighborhood leaders scouring low-income, Spanish-speaking

and senior communities, where response rates tend to be lower. The goal is to reach 10 percent of Athens households; results will be weighted by various demographics to ensure accuracy. Surveys are due at the end of January, and findings will be made public next summer, Gardner said.

“The more surveys we get, the better,” he said. “We’ll be really grateful if people fill them out.”

The 80-question survey includes questions tailored to each of the partners’ needs, as well as more general questions. The partners are the Athens Area Community Foundation, the Athens-Clarke County government, the Athens Housing Authority, the Clarke County School District, Envision Athens, Family Connection/Communities in Schools, Piedmont Athens Regional, St. Mary’s and United Way of Northeast Georgia.

As with the first round, data will be divided along elementary- and middle-school district lines so Local School Governance Teams can see the needs of each individual school.

Envision Athens undertook a similar effort in 2017, collecting information from thousands of residents to create a unified master plan for ACC, CCSD, UGA and other local institutions. But Gardner drew a distinction between Envision Athens and the Athens Wellbeing Project. Whereas Envision Athens was focused on identifying specific actions for each institution to take, the Athens Wellbeing Project is merely providing information for its partners and whoever else might find it useful, not recommending actions, he said.

“What we really hope to gain more than anything is a better, more accurate, more informed picture of the community,” Gardner said. [Blake Aued] f

Odds and Ends A long-awaited downtown grocery store could finally be on its way: Piggly Wiggly wants to move into the 100 Prince development slated for the former St. Joseph Catholic Church property. The grocery store recently asked the Athens Downtown Development Authority for help in obtaining a $250,000 low-interest loan from the Georgia Cities Foundation, which has helped bankroll several other downtown businesses, including Ciné and Creature Comforts. The mixed-use development was approved in 2016, but has lain dormant as Greenville, SC developer Russ Davis sought an anchor tenant. “Hopefully, it will get that project moving,” ADDA co-director Linda Ford said.

The Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation named Tommy Valentine its new executive director last month, replacing Amy Kissane, who moved on in March after 16 years.

Valentine is a Cedar Shoals High School and UGA graduate who is currently a PhD candidate in public administration at UGA. He ran for ACC Commission earlier this year but lost to Ovita Thornton.

Commissioner Sharyn Dickerson has also landed on her feet after losing her re-election bid to Patrick Davenport, who will take office in January. The Watkinsville City Council hired Dickerson as its first-ever city administrator last week. Paradise Falls THE BODIES OF WALTON COUNTY

I came home to find 80 cops, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the sheriffs of three counties on my neighbor’s land. I eased the minivan past the K9 units and media trucks and pulled into my driveway. I got out, strapped the kids to me and walked over to investigate.

The sheriffs of Gwinnett, Oconee and Walton counties stood in my neighbor’s driveway, watching as uniformed men wearing blue plastic gloves struggled with the kudzu.

Here’s the conversation we had, according to the notes I wrote down later that evening: ROBIN WHETSTONE

“What are you looking for?” I asked, walking up to the sheriffs.

“Wells,” said Joe Chapman, the sheriff of Walton, my county.

“You’re looking for a body,” I said.

“Yes,” said the sheriff.

“Well, you’ll probably find one,” I said. “I heard there’s bodies everywhere out here.”

“What?” The other two sheriffs walked away. I started telling him about the time I was cleaning out a rental house on Stokes Street, in Monroe, and…

“What are y​ ou​doing on Stokes Street?” he said, interrupting me.

“I was cleaning out a rental house. The neighbor came over to meet me. I remember it clearly,” I told the sheriff, “because it was 10 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, and she had a solo cup and a cigarette. She was drunk and still drinking.

I was jealous. It had been years since I’d been drunk on a Tuesday. She asked me where I lived. “‘Oh, High Shoals,’ she said fondly. ‘I had my first ever job out in High Shoals. Paradise Falls.’ She was quiet for a minute, remembering, then: ‘They used to give me a quarter for every one I found.’

“‘Every one what?’ I said.

“She leaned in toward me, lowering her voice. ‘Bodies,’ she said.”

The sheriff was looking at me more intently than I liked.

“Who was this person? When was this?”

“Uh, it was a year ago, when I was pregnant with my youngest.” I pointed at the baby strapped to my front. “And anyway, she was drunk. She probably meant ‘bottles.’ A quarter per body doesn’t make any sense.”

The sheriff nodded. “That’s true,” he said. “Plus, the lady we’re talking to for this case was in jail then.” He started telling me the details of the woman, who was in jail again for a different crime, and who said she knew where a body was hidden. It’s in a well, she said, somewhere right around here. A helicopter flew overhead as the sheriff continued talking about the woman and how she ran around with so and so and such and such, people he assumed I knew, but didn’t.

“Should he be telling me all this?” I thought, taking a closer look at the sheriff of Walton County, a handsome fellow who would soon be arrested for fighting in a pool hall in Carrabelle, FL. He seemed unconcerned.

“I’ll tell you,” he said. “What I’m worried about is finding something out here that we’re not looking for.”

“There’s no telling what you’ll find. Paradise Falls was pretty wild, I hear.”

Paradise Falls was a local river hangout in the 1970s. It was owned by a shrewd Floridian who once ran for mayor of High Shoals on the platform of disbanding the town. He put the front end and engine of a ’72 Pontiac in the middle of the pond, attached a ski rope to it and charged people a few bucks a go-round.

“Someone told me the owner would come down here with an automatic rifle and demand that everyone pay,” I said.

“Yep,” said the sheriff. “I was down here one time when I was 17, and that gang, the Dixie Choppers, was fighting. The guy who was the sheriff of Walton County back then came out and told them they had to leave, but one of the gang members laid down in the road. ‘You’re gonna have to run me over,’ he said.”

“Wow,” I said. The current sheriff of Walton County sure was fun to talk to. “What happened?”

“He ran him over,” said the sheriff.

“Aww,” I said, “and then ​you​grew up to be the sheriff. How funny.”

“It is funny,” he said. “But, you know, things have really changed around here since that guy moved in.”

He waved his hand in the direction of my house, but I knew he didn’t mean my husband.

“Yeah,” I said. “He’s my neighbor.” My neighbor on the other side lives on a lot of land and had planned to turn his acreage into an intentional Christian community, where people could come to read, pray, think and talk. A bunch of people from his church, including my husband, moved down here with him in the early 2000s, buying up several of the old mill houses in the community. The new folks weren’t interested in a go-round on the tow rope, and when they moved in, things started to change.

“When they got here, the liquor store turned into a costume shop.” The sheriff pointed across the two-lane blacktop at a building that used to be a package store, but now was a shop run by one of the church people, a talented seamstress who sewed costumes for theater productions in Athens. From where we stood, we could see gowns hung up, teal sequins glinting behind the dusty windows.

“It did change when he got here,” I said. “It was kind of like a struggle between two opposing forces.”

“Yep.” The sheriff pointed at my 2-year-old, who had wandered off to stare at an old car half-eaten by kudzu.

“Watch your daughter,” he said. “There’s wells out here everywhere.” f

DODD FERRELLE’S HOLIDAY BENEFIT SENDS THE OFFICE LOUNGE OUT IN STYLE UNSILENT NIGHT FILLS DOWNTOWN WITH SEASONAL CHEER

eturning for its eighth year in Athens, Unsilent Night will take place the evening of Friday, Dec. 7. The sonic parade will begin just outside of Little Kings Shuffle Club and march through downtown Athens and the UGA campus, filling the streets with unique sounds that promise to bring holiday cheer.

Unsilent Night began in the early 1990s, when New York composer Phil Kline wrote a four-part minimalist orchestral piece that was meant to be played outdoors in December in a group setting. Originally, participants were given one of the four tracks on cassette, and the tapes were

sounds different each time. “It’s sort of like taking a psychedelic bubble bath,” Kline says.

Athens’ Mark Mobley decided to bring Unsilent Night to our city in 2011. Since then, he and Rachel Watkins have organized and led the performances. “It’s the closest a non-musician can get to the feeling of playing in a symphony orchestra,” Mobley says.

Since its beginning in Athens, the amount of participants has grown, and this year, the event is being held earlier in the month to allow more college students to attend.

The piece was written specifically for the holiday season, to provide a sense of joy and family, and that’s more important now than ever, says Kline. “It’s just a gift,” he says.

When Kline wrote the piece, minimalism was at its peak, and the form heavily inspired Unsilent Night, which features droning textures, echoey vocals, bells and beats. During the first few years after its origin, Kline changed and added parts until he felt it was done. Since then, it has remained the same.

The first performance took place in New York in 1992. Since that time, Unsilent Night has gained popularity all over the world. This year, over 30 U.S. cities will participate. The piece has also been performed in Berlin, Belgium, Hong Kong, South Africa, Australia and Brussels.

Kline says he didn’t have a plan to continue it after the first year, but he and his friends had so much fun that they kept it going. Kline still leads the annual performance in New York. Each year, he and his daughter, Clementine, start off the event by counting down and yelling “go” in the middle of Washington Square Park.

“Many artists worry, ‘Is any of the feeling I’m putting into this being received on the other end?’” Kline says. “With Unsilent Night, it really seems to happen.”

Mobley says it has become so ingrained in his holiday routine that the season wouldn’t be the same without it, just as The Nutcracker or any other Christmas tradition. He wrote an article for NPR about Kline and Unsilent Night, saying the piece transforms “the coldest urban area with the warmth of musical fellowship.”

Kline and Mobley emphasize that Unsilent Night is a fun, family-friendly event for everyone to enjoy. The piece was made for the holiday season, but doesn’t specifically align with any belief system.

Instead, it functions as a standalone piece that people of any background can enjoy.

“It’s a completely transcendent hour in the middle of a really stressful season,” Mobley says.

People clearly enjoy the event, as DeSimone anticipates a crowd of at least 500. The fundraising goal for the night is $5,000, though both DeSimone and Ferrelle predict they will exceed it.

Georgia Dish Boys Get Cinematic PLUS, MORE MUSIC NEWS AND GOSSIP

The bill this night is pretty full-on—they’ll be joined by Lydia Brambila, Love My Truck and The Pink Stones. Although only a handful of songs have been made publicly available leading up to the record’s release, the three singles all point to the thing being a solid listen. Overall, the feeling is one of a fight happening one room over from whatever room you’re in. The vocals are howling, the pedal steel is wailing, and even when it slows down—such as on “Heartworn Highways”—the doom is still present. This song really lays it down that there aren’t any more Townes Van Zandts, Rodney Crowells or Guy Clarks coming down the pike. That said, the song itself is good evidence of something new being cut right along those same lines, so Georgia Dish Boys could very well be totally wrong. What Will It Take to Beat Alabama?

Georgia led Alabama for the vast majority of the game—making them one of only two teams to lead Alabama at any point this season—but it never felt like the Dawgs were actually winning the game. It felt like the result could be different, should be different, from the 26-23 overtime loss in the National Championship Game last season, based on how we played this time around compared to then, but there was a palpable sense that everything was about to come crashing down.

So what will it take to beat Alabama?

Perfection.

All it took was a few small mistakes for all the hard work to come undone this year, and they’re easy to identify: The busted coverage on Hurt’s 23-yard pass to Jaylen Waddle on Bama’s game-tying drive. The failed fake punt attempt with the game tied in the fourth quarter on Georgia’s next drive. The inability to wrangle Hurts on his game-winning scramble. Unless you play a

And it did. This time, backup quarterback Jalen Hurts came in for Tua Tagovailoa in a role reversal from last season, but the end result was the same. Only instead of Alabama capping off their comeback by shanking a field goal and extending our hope/anguish into an overtime period, they just stomped on our neck in regulation. Hurts scrambled for a 15-yard touchdown to take the lead, and a token heave to the end zone from Jake Fromm fell short. Georgia lost 35-28, lost the SEC Championship and lost a spot in the College Football Playoff. It really, really sucked.

Make no mistake, though, Georgia was outstanding in this game. Jake Fromm was 25-39 for 301 yards and three touchdowns in the best game of his career. The defense flew to the ball, creating two interceptions and six tackles for loss, and keeping the Alabama offense on its toes for most of the game. Just as importantly, through some combination of pressure and injury, Tagovailoa, the presumptive Heisman winner before Saturday, was dreadful.

Everything went Georgia’s way for most of the game—except maybe the officiating— and it still didn’t matter.

We’ve lost our last four meetings with the Tide, and three of those were lost on the final play of the game. These SEC championship contests between the Dawgs and the Tide are likely to be an annual occurrence for the foreseeable future. Alabama is both a perpetual road and measuring stick for Georgia and, like it or not, it seems God has deemed fit that Georgia must slay its

flawless game against the Tide, you won’t beat them.

In a greater sense, the lack of perfection is also why we failed to make the playoff field and will instead play Texas in the Sugar Bowl. (A fantastic consolation prize, I might add.) If we had beaten LSU, we would’ve entered championship weekend with our CFP spot locked up, just as Bama did. Nothing can be left to chance, because other playoff contenders teams get to play Pitt or not play at all. Until we prove we can beat Alabama, a perfect regular season will be our clearest path to the playoff.

Perfection takes time. It took Saban three seasons to win his first national championship at Alabama. Smart hasn’t won his title yet, but like Saban, in three years he’s turned his program into one of the best teams in the country and a perennial title contender.

Georgia will return 17 of 22 starters, plus a slew of underclassman contributors and any stud recruits Smart signs in this class. Talent-wise, this year’s team will be the worst Georgia will be for years to come.

It was a rebuilding season, which should scare the hell out of the rest of college football, especially Alabama. Saban said before the game that Georgia is the best team they’ve faced this year, and admitted after the game he doesn’t want to play the Dawgs again. Because he knows, even if it didn’t happen last year or this year, Kirby has his number. And Alabama fans know, in the bottom of their souls, they didn’t beat Georgia—they escaped Georgia. f

The light of the small screen shone on the psych-rock group when original guitarist Joe Keery became known for his role as Steve Harrington on Netflix’s hit series “Stranger Things.”

Although Keery is no longer an active member of the band, his contributions can be heard on its debut album, When I Think of You in a Castle, which was released in April. Losing Battles RUMINATIONS OF A NATIVE GEORGIAN ABOUT TRUMP AND KEMP AND THEM

He noticed the mailer from Stacey Abrams supporting John Barrow’s candidacy for secretary of state. That started us reminiscing about how many losing candidates we have supported through the years. That’s because we’re liberals, and the majority of Georgians are not. It’s that simple. Vince and I and our ilk are outnumbered, though only by a hair’s breadth this time around, and the predictions are that we may be in the majority soon, though the minority still controls the legislature and the governor’s office. That gives them the ability to continue gerrymandering Democratic voters, so that more and more of them elect fewer and fewer legislators, while fewer and fewer Republicans elect

national economy crashed into the Great Depression.

So, let’s say that there never was any normal time when things could get sorted out, and everybody just settled into an uneasy truce, where they all lived close together, and you had to know your place in that order, or it wouldn’t work.

Country people are different, and smalltown people are dependent on the country around them and on each other. And keep in mind that this rural Georgia is some of the most beautiful land in the world, with rivers and streams and swamps, woods and fields, hills and valleys—a paradise, in spite of the snakes and yellow jackets and scorpions and fire ants: a paradise that requires a gun for protection and to reap the harvest of edible creatures that roam through it.

more and more of their kind. Our hometown, Athens, is a laboratory for Republican districting. Four of our five local legislators have only a piece of Athens in districts dominated by the surrounding rural counties.

I grew up in what is now Kemp country and Trump country, and I have often contemplated how it is that rural and smalltown Georgians so strongly hold political views so different from mine and Vince’s.

They would wonder the same about us.

It’s always about that forced immigration that brought people of different color, different languages, different religions, different education and put them to work that nobody else would do and then set them free but unable to own property or even own their own labor, not being legally allowed to make contracts, and denied adequate schooling.

Meanwhile, the people who brought them here had lost a disastrous war and were themselves conquered, scrambling to survive with their destroyed assets, trying to go back to their business of raising cotton, which their former workers needed to survive, too, even though they couldn’t own the land or their own labor. But the land was wearing out, and then the boll weevil came and ate their crop 10 years before the

Of course, a lot of this countryside has been covered with lakes and their gated communities and clear-cut and bought up by timber companies and the government, but there’s enough left to remind us of what it means to love the country and its freedom even when you’re living in town. It’s not Atlanta; it’s not Athens; it’s not even Macon, but it’s not bad. It is a way of life for half our people. So, they’re going to vote for that city-slicker Brian Kemp, because his scriptwriters handed him a shotgun (and he snapped it shut, pointing it at somebody, which no hunter would ever do), and they put him in the big pickup and blew up stuff and it had some country humor, and the alternative was the other side, was a breaking down of the old order, people trying to get out of their place. And that ultimate city slicker, Donald Trump, understands how that country man feels, even though he himself wouldn’t last an hour in a real swamp. Trump’s genius is to translate his New York City street smarts into an attitude that resonates with people who otherwise would disdain everything he is.

Political handlers know how to package the country flavor and sell it like sausage, but underneath all that hype are real people with their own values and their own history, and they are, after all, us. f
