commissioners had negotiated with the Gordy family, as well as the fate of several historic homes along Reese Street.

Planning commissioners said they felt like they didn’t have enough information to vote and wanted to wait for an upcoming study from UGA’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government to take a broader look at the neighborhood. “This is a very important area close to downtown, and I don’t know why we’re just looking at this one block,” Planning Commissioner Alice Kinman said.

Some neighborhood residents also showed up to ask questions—which county commissioners weren’t allowed to address, given the format and rules of the meeting.

“My main concern is there are questions that appear to be unanswered,” Planning Commissioner Maxine Easom said.

ACC Commissioner Jerry NeSmith urged the planning commission to send the zoning overlay district on to the county commission. They’ll handle public input, he said, but right now time is of the essence because a demolition moratorium on the property has expired. (Commissioner Melissa Link had urged them to extend it for six months in July, but Commissioner Mike Hamby convinced a majority of colleagues to approve a shorter extension.)

“We’ve been negotiating with the owners on this plan,” NeSmith said. “We get something, he gets something. The owner can demolish those homes right now, tomorrow. Then the whole [deal] goes away.

“The reason we’re not looking at a broader area is because we’re trying to solve a specific problem with this specific development,” he said.

Planning Director Brad Griffin said NeSmith is “absolutely correct” about the timing, and adding residential density in-town is something the community has been talking about for a long time.

The Gordys began acquiring properties around The Varsity early last year, cutting down trees and tearing down commercial buildings along Broad Street in preparation for redevelopment (rumored at the time to be a Publix, but that was never confirmed). Currently, most of the seven-acre property bordered by Broad, Milledge Avenue, Reese and Chase Street is zoned

commercial-general, which allows big-box stores and hotels up to six stories tall, like the new Best Western tower across the street.

The overlay district would limit development to three stories on Milledge and two stories on residential Reese, with no retail curb cuts allowed on Reese. It also requires buildings to be set back from the street, parking to be hidden and buffers between commercial uses and single-family homes.

In addition, three houses—including the historic Mack-Burney House, built by former slaves and later the home of educator Annie Burney—will be turned over to the ACC government for affordable housing, rather than being torn down.

“The main concern was to maintain that single-family residential character,” Link said.

In a bizarre discussion that included several back-and-forths between commissioners and planning commissioners, planning commissioners resisted the notion that they should rubber-stamp the proposal and send it on to the county commission. “I like the project. I want it to happen,” Planning Commissioner Hank Joiner said. “But I feel like I’ve been threatened by the mayor and commission tonight, and I hate that.”

The situation was unusual because, even though the planning commission is an advisory board appointed by the mayor, all zoning changes have to go through it first before they get to the ACC Commission.

In this case, ACC commissioners were not just the final decision-makers, but essentially the applicants asking for the change.

There were also questions about how much anyone could talk about the negotiations because they involve a potential real-estate transaction, a topic usually discussed only in secret. In the end, the planning commission voted 6–2 to table the overlay district—pushing the ACC Commission’s final vote into January at the earliest.

NeSmith said after the Nov. 1 meeting that he is hopeful the delay won’t scuttle the deal. “We have to go back to the owners and convince them to wait,” he said. “I’ve been told by [Commissioner Kelly Girtz, who also participated in the negotiations] that that won’t be a problem.” [BA] f

Rezoning Is Bad for Winterville On Tuesday, Nov. 13, there is a very important zoning issue being voted upon by the Winterville City Council. Here are the pertinent facts up to this date about the rezone: Rob McNiff wants his property at 370 Athens Road in Winterville rezoned to commercial to sell to Joe Cascio whose expressed purpose is to redevelop the property so he can operate a commissary kitchen for a food service operation located at 195 Oak St. in Athens.

Without all the legally required information for an application to rezone, the Winterville Planning and Zoning Board on Sept. 5 voted unanimously to recommend to the Mayor and City Council that this rezone be approved on the basis of avoiding the property potentially becoming Section 8 rental property and that the P&Z Board should do what they can to help McNiff sell his property.

At the city council public hearing on Oct. 2, the turn-out by citizens opposing the rezone was phenomenal. The opposition had a powerful presence as nearly every single person in attendance spoke out against 370 Athens Road being rezoned to commercial.

At the city council meeting on Oct. 9, Mayor Dodd Ferrelle recommended tabling the vote until Nov. 13 so he could organize a citizen advisory group whose purpose would be to put conditions on the property to try to reach a compromise between the citizens in opposition and the prospective buyer.

As the date of the City Council’s final vote on this rezone approaches, we have serious concerns about the following: We question how this spot rezone will benefit the citizens of Winterville

when Cascio’s food will be served and sold in Athens, the tax revenue will go to Athens-Clarke County, not to the City of Winterville.

Cascio’s site plan has been incomplete during this entire process as it does not contain all the required data as set forth in the zoning ordinance for the City of Winterville.

When it has been brought up at public forums that there is existing commercial property available in the City of Winterville, Cascio’s reply has been that it’s too expensive for his business plan. With this reasoning, why should the city spot rezone for someone whose business plan doesn’t support working within the existing zoning and infrastructure already in place?

The current zoning ordinances for the City of Winterville offer little to no protec-

woefully incomplete and in good conscience they could not provide conditions at that time. In spite of their concerns, the mayor said the intended use for the property was not a pertinent concern of his any longer.

Up until this point, the entire issue has been defined and presented to the public as whether or not to rezone 370 Athens Road to commercial status for the existing building and property to be used for the expressed purpose of it being food service establishment or commissary kitchen.

The Winterville City Council will be voting as to whether or not 370 Athens Road will get rezoned to commercial on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 6:30 pm at Winterville City Hall, located at 125 North Church St. in Winterville. We hope to see you there.

Satire or No? Seeking to outdo the conservative group that for years has been promoting draconian state and federal legislation (ALEC), a new voice has arisen on the radical right— the UUD—poised to be the new touchstone for Republican candidates everywhere.

The UUD (Unconcerned, Unfeeling and Disconnected) seeks to suppress voting rights of the poor, prevent them having greater access to health care and aggressively promote the political power of corporations willing to help fund the “right” political campaigns.

Its latest legislative proposal is to allow corporations broader political power than that afforded by the Citizens United victory allowing them unrestricted contributions to election campaigns. The most sweeping initiative proposed thus far is to introduce a voting system that not only allows corporations to enjoy their full rights as “persons” by casting ballots, but by making each ballot count in proportion to the net wealth of the entity casting it. This would happily have the effect of giving full control of our electoral system to the corporations belonging to the Fortune 500 and the wealthiest 1,000 families in America. The rest of the voting population would count for far less than 15 percent of the potential votes in any election. And, as corporate America literally resides everywhere in the United States, they would have the vote in every single state, county and municipal election.

Public responses to this report have varied. Some claim the authors have been too conservative, and some fear that we will not be able to adhere to the ambitious measures necessary to slow the damage. But one thing is clear: Climate change is complicated, and that is reflected in public opinion.

In May, the Pew Research Center reported that 52 percent of U.S. adults believe it is possible to protect air and water quality while limiting environmental regulations, an opinion that seemingly contrasts with the latest IPCC report’s call to action. Climate change is no exception to partisan bickering, and opinions on environmental concerns are often divided by party lines. Although it is easy to focus on what divides us in today’s political climate, organizations like STEMzone UGA are taking a different approach—using our shared curiosities about the natural world as a starting point for entering into more complicated conversations.

STEMzone UGA—a science outreach event founded by Odum School of Ecology PhD candidate Reni Kaul—offers UGA graduate students and organizations the opportunity to share their research with football tailgaters in a relaxed and interactive setting. ECOGIG, a research consortium that emerged in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill off the Louisiana coast, paved the way for STEMzone when Samantha Joye, ECOGIG project director and professor in the UGA Department of Marine Sciences, initiated “Science at the Stadium” to highlight ECOGIG research efforts and technology in the broader context of global ocean health.

Now, in STEMzone’s second year, students from a variety of STEM disciplines will fill the lawn of the Miller Learning Center five hours before kickoff for the Auburn game from 2–7 p.m. on Nov. 10 to share their research.

This year’s booths will once again feature the breadth of research interests represented at UGA, with the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources offering introductions to a host of reptiles, ECOGIG guiding eager operators on how to drive

underwater remotely operated vehicles, and the MathZone challenging visitors with mind-bending puzzles.

But for those eager to exchange ideas of the more complicated variety, conservationist John Muir’s reminder, “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe,” will be alive and well on the MLC lawn. Attendees will learn that humans are hitched to climate change and a host of other environmental and scientific challenges being tackled by the UGA STEM community.

Odum School of Ecology students will lead a “Migration Station” booth in conjunction with Project Monarch Health (monarchparasites. org), where Cece Working, an Odum PhD student, will educate visitors on monarch butterfly health.

“Monarchs migrate annually from Canada to Mexico, but climate change is impacting their migratory route,” Working says. “Temperature is an important cue that helps monarchs determine their timing of migration, so higher temperatures alter their ability to start breeding season at their historical timing.”

EcoReach—an organization devoted to teaching youth throughout northeastern Georgia about ecology and the environment—will focus on human relationships with the wildlife in our backyards. Kaylee Arnold, a PhD student in the UGA IDEAS program and president of EcoReach, will communicate a message of stewardship.

“We want every kid that we speak with, and their families, to take notice of what type of wildlife is around them, recognize when humans are altering their habitats and learn how we can work to preserve these natural spaces,” Arnold says.

Rachel A. Perry, a PhD student in the Department of Marine Sciences, will focus on the widespread impacts of marine debris. “A significant portion of the world and the United States economy relies on healthy oceans. Those working in fisheries, restaurants that serve seafood, any sort of coastal recreation and tourism or real estate will be negatively affected by trashy seas once their consumers’ health becomes a concern,” Perry says.

“The STEMzone event should be a really neat venue to discuss science and current events with people from a wide range of ages and backgrounds,” Perry says. “If we can engage just a few minds at the event, we are sure to stimulate curiosity in science, and hopefully a change for the better in our environmental practices.” f

Poké Explosion ATHENS’ TRENDIEST FOOD IS SUDDENLY EVERYWHERE

I did my best to eat poké at every place in Athens that offers it, although I didn’t make it over to Craft Public House, on the Eastside, which has an appetizer at the moment that is more poké-inspired (no rice) than poké per se.

I still think Ahi is the best, due to its wide variety of ingredients, Koa Surf Bar and Restaurant smart ordering system—a sushi-style slip of paper on which ame oil and sometimes chili—although you can mark your choices, rather than some of them are sweeter than others. having to make one decision after another The new Poké Bar (1791 Oconee on the spot—good rice and generally solid Connector, near Gigi’s Cupcakes, 706execution.

850-3410) is a fast-casual franchise out Inoko Sushi Express (2301 College of California that lets you pick white or Station Road, by Kroger, 706-546-5662) brown rice—regular medium-grain, not has always been my favorite place for fast, sushi rice—salad greens, kale noodles or inexpensive sushi that is still pretty good, tortilla chips as a base before adding tuna, and it’s no surprise that it does a decent job spicy tuna, salmon, albacore, tofu, scallops, with poké, too. The tuna bowl is available shrimp or octopus. You get two, three or

four proteins, depending on whether you’ve ordered a small, medium or large. The folks behind the counter scoop your stuff into a bowl, then add corn, jalapeño, cilantro, shredded kale, cucumber, sweet onion, scallions, pineapple and/or edamame, before tossing it all in sesame oil, ponzu, spicy mayo, sweet chili, sriracha, wasabi shoyu, regular shoyu and/or house sauce.

What I’m saying is, there are a lot of choices to make at Poké Bar, and although some people find that invigorating, I tend to find it enervating. A to-go menu includes several pre-set combos that you may want to take advantage of. You also get cucumber salad, crab salad and/or wakame, plus toppings that can include avocado (for an

upcharge), mango (ditto), crispy onion, masago and more. The result is fine, if not tremendously exciting, as you might expect from the restaurant’s location in a shopping center largely populated by chains, but it does have bubble tea and mochi ice cream, both good for a cute snack.

Koa Surf Bar and Restaurant (114 College Ave., 706-207-4989), which originally went by the name Koa Bowls, is less organized. It feels like more of a bar than

a restaurant, due to the kitchen frequently being out of things and the disposable plates and flatware you get even when dining in. That said, the presentation is well done, with sauce squirt-bottled over the top of your bowl in an Insta-ready pattern.

What you can order consistently at Koa is a bit of a mystery, as the menu on the website differs from the menu you’re handed, and neither may reflect all the actual offerings. You can get a tuna poké bowl, most likely, with long-grain rice, a variety of veggies and spicy mayo. You can also get a pork bowl, with similar ingredients, and, best of all, sliders—or, should they be out of buns, a larger sandwich— with the same pork and veggies that are an excellent bar meal.

Your mileage may vary.

Tokyo Express (690 U.S. Hwy. 29, by Space Kroger, 706543-8833), which does hibachi and sushi mostly to go, also has poké, which makes sense. The assembly counter is perpendicular to the one at which you order, and does require a lot of choices, but at least it’s compact. Like Poké Bar, it offers octopus as a protein, but rather than the less freaky hunks at the chain, Tokyo Express has whole baby octopus, which are significantly tastier. Its house sauce is a little too sweet, but it has other options, including its popular yellow sauce that it sells by the jug.

UGA’s campus eateries now offer Sushi With Gusto (inside Joe Frank Harris Commons, on East Campus), which includes grab-and-go sushi and poké bowls. They’re about what you’d expect but not inedible.

Hours vary for all these places, but all of them are open for lunch and dinner every day, except the UGA one, which closes earlier. Koa is open late, as you’d expect of a bar, and is the only one that also has a liquor license. f

The Glands Release Their Third and Final Album

By Gabe Vodicka music@flagpole.com here is a bittersweet mundanity to growing older in a college town. Few songwriters have conveyed this feeling as sharply as Ross Shapiro, the frontman of Athens band The Glands, who died from lung cancer in 2016 at age 53. In his sweetly skewed pop songs, Shapiro watched as his city swirled around him—as it changed and yet did not—the musician a still figure surrounded by trails of flickering light.

In their heyday, The Glands kept the local scene grounded. As a Bill Berry-less R.E.M. toured the world in support of the opaque Up, as Kindercore did its winsome indie-pop thing and Elephant 6 transmitted a mythical, magical vision of Athens, The Glands held it down for Classic City ennui with two understated full-lengths, 1998’s Double Thriller and 2000’s The Glands.

Despite their relative absence from the stage and a semi-official breakup in the mid-aughts, The Glands’ legend grew. When they reemerged to play shows, as they did from 2010–2012 and again in 2014–2015, it became clear that their appeal had endured. This week, New West Records issues an expansive Glands collection on CD, digital and vinyl, including remastered versions of the first two albums, as well as a third, Double Coda—a revelatory LP consisting of newly unearthed material from the band’s initial run.

It’s all packaged together in an impressive box set, I Can See My House From Here, along with a 52-page book featuring an essay chronicling the group’s blue-collar formation and uniquely Athenian career course. The book includes tributes and remembrances written by everyone from the Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood to Yo La Tengo’s Ira Kaplan to comedian David Cross. Two decades after they arrived—and two years after losing their enigmatic leader—The Glands are finally getting their due.

Double Thriller

Though Shapiro was known for his bristly demeanor, he was not quite the grump many perceived him to be. Instead, he could be tender in his mentorship. “His faux-curmudgeonly way was actually beloved by all who knew him,” reads Shapiro’s obituary. “In college, he worked at [Jewish summer camp] Camp Barney Medintz on the arts and crafts staff. A generation of campers remembers Ross for ‘yelling’ at them, but loved him just the same.”

Decades later, as the owner of Athens’ Schoolkids Records, the wry, graying Deadhead proffered strong but informed opinions to the youngsters (and oldsters) who stumbled into his downtown shop, many of whom were seeking the latest indie buzz-cut or major-label release but were soon turned on to something cool and obscure.

Shapiro quietly relished that dialogue. “Having a record store was great, because the patrons turned me on to far more than I could ever turn them on to,” he told Flagpole in a candid interview in October 2014. “It was like junk shopping—only, the junk was being brought to me.”

Double Thriller—first distributed in 1996 by the band and later issued by New Jersey label Bar/None—is the meticulous product of a person destined to become a record store clerk. The album takes The Olivia Tremor Control’s found-sound approach and runs it slapdash through an AM-rock filter, adding gratuitous doses of disco-sleaze (the wah-sick guitar on “Two Dollar Wine”) and atonal skronk (“Free Jane”) to keep things from turning too serious.

It gives only a passing nod to the prevailing local trends of the time, but it is unmistakably an Athens record. “Athens has very little music industry, and that breeds a certain attitude of thinking about what you’re doing artistically,” says longtime Glands drummer Joe Rowe, who befriended Shapiro while the two slung fries and feta at downtown institution Gyro Wrap at the tail end of the 1980s.

Even within the insular local community, The Glands insisted on carving out their own space. “I knew that we were never really part of Elephant 6,” says Rowe. “[But] I kind of liked not being attached to anything else other than just the band. And Ross was always a pretty private guy. He wasn’t really a joiner. He didn’t really like to be a part of any groups.”

Triple Thriller Triple Thriller

The lack of scene attachments allowed The Glands to explore sounds and styles without fear of being excommunicated—or, God forbid, misconstrued. Though rough around the edges, Double Thriller can be bare, boisterous and, occasionally, downright gorgeous, as on “Skin,” an easy, arresting four-minute acoustic number that would prove to be a sign of things to come.

As writer Stephen Deusner notes in his essay for I Can See My House From Here, somewhere near the turn of the century, The Glands became a full-fledged band.

The project had always been an outlet for Shapiro’s various impulses. Membership ebbed and flowed, with Rowe a constant. But where Double Thriller was the weird, concave result of hours of solo tinkering, The Glands, which found an unlikely home on legendary (and soon-troubled) Macon imprint Capricorn Records, saw the songwriter seeking connection through rock and roll.

Yet Rowe, who jokes that the studio presented “maybe not enough limitations” for an obsessive musician like Shapiro, says no one in the group resented Shapiro’s disinterest in pursuing indie-rock stardom.

“I always feel like everything we worked on together as a band is all kind of the same thing and comes from the same place,” Rowe says. “It’s cliche, but that’s what it was about for us: getting together and making music.”

“Livin’ Was Easy,” the opening track, is the prototypical Glands tune. A love letter to Athens and a lampooning of its storybook image—a cozy, jobless fantasyland bursting with endless creative energy—the song exudes townie ambivalence in its now-iconic chorus: “Why did I go?/ The livin’ was easy/ I had a room of my home/ And the weather so warm.”

The Glands is more streamlined than Double Thriller. Still, it’s full of surprises. Shapiro goes full Macca on “Swim,” a bouncy, magnetic track that stands as the group’s most unabashed foray into pop. Rollicking single “Straight Down” finds the band in mid-season form, with Rowe providing a crisp backdrop for bassist Doug McQuiston’s inventive runs and a fiery solo from guitarist Frank MacDonnell.

“I Can See My House From Here” centers on a Four Seasons crib so blatant and pure, the listener doesn’t know whether to laugh or dance.

The self-titled outing is Shapiro’s crowning achievement: drenched in melody, stylishly nonconformist, fluid to the point of feeling weightless. It should have been The Glands’ breakthrough—and it kind of was. They landed opening gigs for bigger acts like The Shins and Modest Mouse, spreading the album’s neoclassic-rock gospel across state lines.

“We were fortunate enough to get a good booking agent, so we were able to tour some. We always played out of town a lot more,” says Rowe. “We never played in Athens that much.” That was partly, Rowe adds, because “Ross was kind of difficult. He wasn’t happy going to a regular club and playing a regular show. He always wanted to do something weird.”

Indeed, The Glands continued to follow their frontman’s whims. Rather than exploit momentum created by the self-titled LP by continuing to tour or cranking out a follow-up, Shapiro opted to retreat. Recording technology had advanced, and The Glands’ principal spent caffeine-fueled chunks of time experimenting—aimlessly, it seemed—in his Normaltown home studio with engineer friends Andy Baker and David Barbe.

Double Coda

When The Glands resurfaced for the last time, in 2014, it was big news in Athens. Pre-sale tickets for a show at Lumpkin Street haunt Green Room disappeared in hours.

The attention came as a surprise to Shapiro, who told Flagpole it was “flattering if people are interested,” adding that the band’s third album was not only in the pipeline, but almost done.

The sprawling setlists from the group’s handful of concerts that year and the next featured a trove of unreleased material, much of it new and never before heard. But some of it had existed for decades, dating back to the days of Double Thriller and beyond. In fact, for years, Shapiro had been sitting on well over an album’s worth of mostly finished recordings.

Why that work had never seen release was unclear.

“Every once in a while, the band members would bug Ross about it, but it never happened,” says Rowe. “It’s kind of a mystery why Ross could never bring himself to put anything [else] out.”

Rowe points to Shapiro’s quixotic search for perfection—“He constantly reworked stuff. He would come up with like five different vocal melodies and words for one song”—as well as his disdain for the industry politics that he saw as having prevented The Glands’ first two albums from reaching a larger audience.

“He kind of got burned a bit with the first two records,” says Rowe. “We seemed to be getting a pretty good

reception from folks for the self-titled record, so we thought we’d be able to find a home for another record…

It wasn’t for a long time until [we] realized that, ‘Oh, when you put out a record, it helps to have an angle—some kind of story to promote it. Like, somebody’s in rehab, or somebody’s sober, or somebody died.”

That point stings given the tragic impetus for Double Coda, which is culled from sessions spanning the years 1996–2003. (Though Shapiro had indeed been planning an album of all-new music, the project was largely incomplete when he died.) Yet The Glands’ final LP is exploratory, even playful, a jubilant departure from the first two full-lengths’ artful restraint. One wonders if Shapiro held this music back for so long because the person Rowe describes as intensely self-doubting felt it was too unguarded, too free.

The 23 tracks on Double Coda were chosen and polished up by Rowe, Barbe and former Gland Derek Almstead, and represent the most album-ready discoveries from Shapiro’s vast archive. Naturally, they’re all over the map. Some, like the utterly lovely “Sadie Song,” are fan favorites that had previously floated around as bootlegs. Others feature electro flourishes (“Electricity”), turntable breakdowns (“Atmosphere”) and Spanish-language balladry (“Rose,” with guest vocals from Producto vocalist Ane Diaz). There’s a deadpan Brubeck parody titled “Piano Jazz,” because of course there is. (It’s among the record’s most affecting tracks, because of course it is.)

A messy but significant compilation, Double Coda functions as both primer and retrospective. “When I hear certain songs, it takes me back to a certain time and place,” says Rowe. “But then there are other songs that I don’t even remember working on, because it’s been so long.”

For Glands fans, it’s thrilling that this music has finally been released, and that the band is, improbably, back in the spotlight once again. Still, a loaded question lingers: What would Shapiro think of it all?

The likely answer: not much. In his essay, Deusner recalls a typical conversation with a Shapiro confidant. “‘What you’re doing,’ says his close friend Dutch Cooper, meaning this box set, meaning these liner notes, meaning this attempt to tell his story, ‘Ross would have hated it.’”

Yet for Rowe and other remaining band members and associates, the reissue campaign is a long-awaited opportunity to share the band’s music with a new generation, as well as a chance to move on, creatively and emotionally. It’s also, in a rather Glandsian twist, a bittersweet reminder of what was and what could have been.

“I miss Ross a lot,” Rowe says. “And I think it’s great to have this stuff out now, but I wish that we had pushed Ross more than we did when he was alive. Because all of this stuff that’s coming out on Double Coda was done way before Ross passed away. I just think it’s a shame that we couldn’t do it with him.” f

The Soft Boy and the Elf TWO ROCK STALWARTS CHAT MUSIC, WRITING AND MORE

Is there any truth to that, and if so, what’s it about, and do you have any plans to publish it?

RH: I’ve tried several times, but I can’t sustain a narrative for a whole novel. I don’t seem to have the gift of creating sympa-

RH: Mike is a lovely fellow. He’s inseparable from Corrina, his wife and their daughter, Georgia, who plays keys with him. He’s still in good voice and sings his old songs much as he did 50 years ago. Mike’s a pretty humble cat—he doesn’t seem to feel burdened by legend status. There’s no flashing arrow over his head going, “Look at me.” I don’t think he writes much anymore. The momentum of the 1960s has left him, but left him very sweet and smiley.

Creepy bliss, riding on Scientology. Likky McKechnie, the female lead singer on that song, disappeared in the California desert a few years later. Mike and Robin are off Scientology now, but I think it drained them.

AR: Your collaboration with Heron is somewhat similar to Elf Power backing you up, as we’ve long been fans of your music, but it felt pretty natural when we first played together back in January—though we were certainly feeling the pressure of not wanting to let you down as we learned your songs to play with you, with not much time for rehearsal together.

RH: Y’all did a great job on learning my songs, and you seemed at home with them.

Editor’s note: Singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock—known for his extensive solo catalog in addition to his work with pioneering British rock group The Soft Boys—returns to Athens this week. No stranger to the Classic City, Hitchcock has established a bond with our music scene over the decades, inviting local mainstay Elf Power to back him during his 40 Watt appearance in January. Hitchcock and Elves frontman Andrew Rieger—a longtime admirer of the English icon—recently connected via email to discuss their lives in music. The Q&A has been edited for style and length.

which would cause his followers to become conflicted and question their faith.

You’ve performed with Mike Heron of the legendary 1960s Scottish folk group Incredible String Band recently. I’m assuming you grew up listening to his records.

How did that feel to play with someone that you’ve connected with through their music before you met them in real life?

Andrew Rieger: I grew up in a small town in South Carolina with no college radio stations or cool record stores, so my first introduction to your music was the video for “Balloon Man” on MTV’s “120 Minutes.”

Although MTV’s programming in general was pretty bad, that show was pretty important to me, as it was one of the few conduits for good new music. What were your feelings about MTV at the time? Did you notice more fans at shows and higher record sales after they started playing your videos?

Robyn Hitchcock: The first I heard of MTV was when somebody from their office called me at my house in London in 1985.

Where did they find my number, I wonder?

It turned out that they were already showing my videos on “120 Minutes.” Where had they gotten them from? MTV was mysterious.

My friend Tony Moon and I made four or five little home-movie type videos in the mid-1980s on Super 8, culminating in “Balloon Man.” Then A&M steered us into making 16 mm videos, and having directors, and spending a lot of money we didn’t have, and it all went to shit. My brand was Super 8—we didn’t need to meddle with it. But yes, “120 Minutes” did recruit an audience for us, as did college radio, and I’m eternally grateful to them both.

Was MTV still relevant for y’all when you started? How was your word spread? My peak time in Athens was the early 1990s—I don’t think you’d emerged yet. Were you in the same breath as Olivia Tremor Control?

AR: We started around 1994. Yes, both Elf Power and Olivia Tremor Control had self-released records recorded at home on four-track cassette, as we couldn’t afford to record in fancy recording studios and really just preferred the sound of four-track cassette recording… We met at a party and traded records and became fans of each other’s music, and began collaborating together, playing on each other’s records and touring together.

We had one video of ours played on “120 Minutes” in the early 2000s, but by then that show was on MTV2, which not that many people tuned in to. MTV had made the switch by that time to mostly reality-show dreck. College radio was a big supporter of us, and that helped a lot to get the word out in the early days.

thetic characters, either. So, I’ve destroyed all my attempts. I tried a kind of memoir too, but I got bored writing down things I knew already. My fractured focus is better suited to songs and poems. I am planning to publish a book of each, if I can. There are many notebooks on my shelves, crawling with words, all thirsty for publication. Have you ventured into writing at all?

AR: I’ve written a few short stories and a few music-related articles. I had what I thought was a brilliantly original idea to write a screenplay about a religious group that clones Jesus from genetic material found on the Shroud of Turin, but upon researching the idea I realized that several others have already written that screenplay!

Back to the drawing board, I suppose.

RH: Then it’s bound to happen eventually.

But even if you cloned Jesus, could you clone his upbringing?

AR: Well, that’s where it could get interesting. You could have teenage cloned Jesus rebel against his imposed godly stature by wreaking all sorts of havoc and mayhem,

My hero worship of Incredible String Band had waned by the time I ran into Mike, so there wasn’t too much overawed creepery on my part, I hope. But it’s always a kick to sing part of “A Very Cellular Song” with him and Georgia.

I take it that you’re String Band fans too? When did you discover them? I’m always pleasantly surprised to hear of people becoming converts to them latterly.

They seemed so much part of their time.

AR: Yes, I love Incredible String Band and the offshoot Clive’s Original Band very much. I discovered them in the late 1990s, along with Fairport Convention, Shirley Collins, Anne Briggs—all that great folk music of the 1960s and ’70s. Lately, I’ve been really into one of the later ISB albums: Earthspan, from 1972, which has a lot of orchestral elements and majestic production flourishes. It borders on prog-rock, but I love it. Here’s a song if you want to take a listen.

RH: Thanks! How strange to hear this music coming out of my phone. I last heard it 45 years ago on my portable record player.

RH: I edited it somewhat—it’s not exactly in the order in which it was originally released as an LP. But, yes, I did enjoy it.

When I made that record, I wasn’t playing live at all, and had no plans to do so. I was utterly disconnected from the early 1980s music scene, which is maybe why people like it now. Then, along came R.E.M., and I was hauled back into the game. They helped to steer listeners my way. Thanks, boys! f

OWEN ASHWORTH EXPLORES THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND

inger-songwriter Owen Ashworth has been playing emotional, story-heavy synth tunes for over 20 years. For the first 13 of those, he performed under the name Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, playing lo-fi pop tunes on cheap Casio keyboards.

After retiring the name in 2010, Ashworth reappeared as Advance Base. His penchant for songs built on personal anecdotes and stories remained, but the overall sound was a little quieter and a lot more sonically expansive. Advance Base’s latest album, Animal Companionship, is built around analyzing the relationship between people and their pets, and how that reveals what it means to be human.

FP: Do you typically compose your instrumentals first, or do you start with the story?

OA: There’s usually some skeletal version of the instrumental to begin with.

Sometimes, it’s just a chord change or a certain sound or sample—some kernel that’s very abstract that I’m building up from.

Usually, I’m writing the lyrics and the music in tandem, and one is building off the other.

Flagpole spoke to Ashworth ahead of a show at The World Famous to talk about Animal Companionship, his process and how sad music can help people through difficult times. The Q&A has been lightly edited.

Flagpole: Give me a rundown of your new album and its themes about pet ownership.

Owen Ashworth: As long as I’ve been writing, the songs have been about interpersonal relationships and trying to figure out the way people regard and treat each other. Using people’s relationships with their pets seemed like an interesting angle for me to talk about human relationships.

I actually don’t have a dog—I have cats—but I have plenty of friends with dogs. I feel like that’s always a pressing concern with a dog owner—there’s a lot of neediness in that relationship, on both sides. I think animals can often be proxies for human relationships, or reflections of relationships with other people.

FP: What’s your process of taking a story from your life and transforming it into a song?

OA: Story-based songs have always been the music I’ve been the most attracted to. There’s a lot of country and soul I listened to growing up that was really narrative-based, and that’s always the kind of writing I’ve aspired to. Usually, there’s a line or two or a vocal melody or a certain feeling that I’m trying to chase down. That initial

Playing a song live is also a really important part of that—making sure I’m comfortable with how it feels singing it in front of people, and making sure the arrangement works the way I want it to.

FP: You’ve labeled your music as “weirdly uplifting.” What does that term mean to you?

OA: It’s just something that someone said to me at one of my shows. Someone told me they had heard my music was depressing, but after [the] show they said I was “weirdly uplifting.” An important thing for me is to make music that acknowledges difficult things in life, but at its core, I want it to be optimistic about talking about and sharing these things with people.

I think the point of sharing dark stories is that it helps you get through it, and that’s a universal feeling that I don’t think people should be afraid to acknowledge. It’s not my intention to wallow in darkness, but just to recognize that it’s there, and to show that you can push through it. f

LET’S ROCK!: The new full-length album by Kites With Lights is named The Movies, not, as previously reported, Invisible to Us. The thing is, though, I can’t honestly discern if this is an error I made or if project leader Jonah Cordy changed it before release. Still, such a hazy sense of memory and reality folds nicely, albeit somewhat ironically, into Cordy’s musical dreamscape. Again, Kites With Lights delivers a whopping package of near-perfect—phrased as such because that’s as close as anything gets—tunes. Thematically, it appears to explore travel, but I think it’s more accurate to say it explores movement as such. Musically, it’s nine tracks of synthdriven new wave, the cultural provenance of which is so deeply ingrained into the pop psyche that different listeners will hear influences as seemingly divergent as, say, Godley & Creme and New Order. Sometimes it feels more like Cordy is a piano man inside a “Twin Peaks”-style red room where it’s misty and dangerous outside, but right there in that one space everything makes its own strange sense. STUDIO 1093 CLOSES AFTER 39 YEARS IN BUSINESS

S

ince 1979, Jim Hawkins has owned and operated Studio 1093 at 1093 Boulevard in Athens. After 39 years, he has decided to put the studio up for sale and retire.

Hawkins’ music career began as a teenager in Athens. He was in college when he met Phil Walden, Otis Redding’s manager.

This eventually led to Hawkins developing a relationship with Redding—a relationship that Hawkins had no idea would change the course of his career forever.

Redding loved Hawkins’ band, The Embers, and frequently used them as his backing group. In spring 1967, Redding invited The Embers to join him on a short tour. Hawkins and his band couldn’t do it, so Redding enlisted The Bar-Kays, who would back him for the remainder of that year. In December, Redding and most of the band died in an airplane crash while on tour.

After Redding’s death, Hawkins knew he had to do something to honor the musician and continue his own career. He had talked with Redding about opening a studio, so that’s exactly what he did. After he returned home from a stint in the Army, Hawkins opened his first studio: the Otis Redding Memorial Studio in Macon.

“Otis wanted to produce a record with my band, and we had always talked about opening a studio,” Hawkins says. “After what happened to him, I spent my time I was enlisted drawing up plans for one.”

The studio soon morphed into the legendary Capricorn Records, which went on to house rock icons such as The Allman Brothers Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willie and more.

After working 80-plus hours a week at Capricorn, Hawkins needed to take a break and decided to move home to Athens. He began engineering sound for films as well as producing music, and when he saw a little white building for sale in the Boulevard neighborhood in 1979, he knew it had potential to be an amazing recording space.

When the studio was finished with its first round of renovations, Hawkins began recording, hosting radio shows, renting out the space for bands to practice and doing everything he could to support the Athens music scene. R.E.M was the first band to rent the studio long-term, and the band kept the space until it could afford a place of its own. In the meantime, Hawkins was still working on films. The space stayed as it was for about 20 years.

“I was out doing film work and bands I

liked were renting out my space, and life was good,” Hawkins says. “Honestly, I don’t know what else I could’ve asked for at the time.”

In the mid-2000s, the film industry took a hit, and Hawkins felt he needed to completely renovate the space to turn it into the roomy, professional-grade studio that it is now. After two-and-a-half years of renovation, Studio 1093 reopened on Apr. 15, 2010.

“The acoustics were always amazing, but I felt like it needed a little more,” Hawkins says. “It wasn’t properly insulated before, so I made it into a space that could be used year-round.”

Since then, Hawkins has worked in the

studio daily, recording and mixing music for local bands and giving them a space to record. Despite a recent rise in self-recording, the studio has remained an Athens staple, playing host to both established musicians and those just starting out.

It is because, not in spite, of the studio’s success that Hawkins has decided to retire.

He says he feels proud of what he’s been able to do in his career, and just feels it is his time to pass the space off to someone else. “I always say that if I get hit by a garbage truck on the way home, I’ve had a great life,” Hawkins says.

Studio 1093 is currently on the market, and no details are currently available about any prospective buyers. f

Women Warriors ALICE WOODRUFF CHANNELS GRIEF AND ANGER INTO SCULPTURE

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com All through the ’70s and ’80s, Watkinsville artist Alice Woodruff worked as a production potter, shipping out wares to shops across the country. After a career switch into becoming a nurse practitioner, she thought her years of making pots were over.

Alas, a traumatic life event in combination with the 2008 recession eventually brought her back to the studio full-time.

Currently on view at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation, two distinct bodies of sculptural work, “Transitions: Vessels for Sam” and “Warrior Women: From Invisible to Formidable with a Nod to #MeToo,” share the artist’s journey towards reconciling difficult experiences. Where her pottery had previously consisted of elegant, functional stoneware pieces, she now focuses on decorative and figurative works that allow for greater expression.

Nearly a decade after the suicide of her teenage son, Samuel Thomas Crowe, Woodruff returned to clay with the hopes of working through unresolved feelings of grief. Both cathartic and exhausting, the act of producing artwork turned out to be more effective in some ways than years of counseling, support groups and religious exploration. The resulting body of sculptural work, “Transitions: Vessels for Sam,” is deeply personal and emotionally heavy, yet provides an important space for contemplating physical death and spiritual rebirth.

“It was almost historically formulaic, in that every ancient culture has had a similar ritual in providing for the dead,” says Woodruff. “I didn’t recognize the pattern until much later, after viewing the King Tut exhibit and the terra-cotta warrior exhibits in Atlanta. I had a good laugh at myself for the ‘original’ idea of sending Sam’s worldly belongings to the afterlife via boats.”

At first, the hand-built vessels took the form of hollow watercraft that could be filled literally or symbolically with mementos and memories from her son’s life. As time went on, the vessels became more barge-like, serving as stages for philosophical and conceptual ideas to play out. This laid the foundation of her latest figurative work, which is a departure from her prior

realizing the forms were shaped like women’s torsos.

This second body of work, “Warrior Women: From Invisible to Formidable with a Nod to #MeToo,” represents the universal stories of women across cultures who have experienced social and political injustices.

Once again, Woodruff managed to translate complex experiences into powerful sculp-

emphasis on more traditional and utilitarian pottery.

“The grief is cyclical in nature, though the cycles spaced further apart with each passing year. Grief does change with time,” says Woodruff. “The role of these pieces now is to keep the topic of suicide in society’s face. The suicide rate has not gone down—it continues to climb annually, particularly among young people.”

“Transitions: Vessels for Sam” first debuted in February 2017 in the Meyer’s Gallery at Athens Academy, where Woodruff was joined by her daughter, Ann Lily Woodruff-Conley, and Nuçi’s Space Director Bob Sleppy to give a presentation on suicide prevention to the upper-school student body. as well as Trump’s infamously offensive “Access Hollywood” comments, the first group of figures emerged from a vulnerable place to represent the mass victimization of women. Their bodies are fairly diminished and unsophisticated, and they hold their arms in protective stances, as if fearful.

Wishing to work in more detail, Woodruff switched from porcelain to white stoneware clay for the second set of figures.

Exploring the theme of “Women as Vessels,” she envisioned pieces that could convey women’s intrinsic importance and crucial roles played within society. Representing quintessential pregnancy, “Mary” folds back the skin of her womb to reveal a child and small church, suggesting the importance of reproductive justice. Speaking up on behalf of the American agricultural system, “Dorothy” holds a farm to draw attention to women’s back-breaking contributions as homesteaders, ranchers, gardeners and conservationists.

In the third and final chapter, “Women as Warriors,” the figures have become emboldened and stand proudly in knowing their inherent self-worth.

Some are even weaponized, like “The Amazonian,” who balances a double-bitted axe on her shoulder, and “Joan,” who cradles a medieval flail, as if ready to oppose anyone who tries to tear them down. Their arrival to this state represents the resiliency and courage of women worldwide and a cultural shift in the tide.

In addition to “Transitions” and “Warrior Women,” the gallery is currently exhibiting “David & Goliath: OCAF’s Annual Small Works and their Colossal Counterparts.” The group show features works of nontraditional sizes, either smaller than 14-by-14 inches or larger than 48-by-48 inches. All three exhibitions will remain on view through Saturday, Nov. 10. f

to prepare for Alabama, because of the myriad issues this team has. And those issues have to be taken into account when determining what the expectations are over this final stretch, especially in a game against this Alabama juggernaut.

Georgia laid a 34-17 whooping on Kentucky Saturday in Lexington to win its second consecutive SEC East title, and thus met the minimum acceptable requirement for a successful season. Aside from a bit of hootin’ and hollerin’ on Kroger Field after the game, there wasn’t much fanfare for the Bulldogs’ latest accomplishment. Division titles don’t mean as much when your expectation is national titles.

Since the season began, we’ve had our eyes on locking down the East as soon as possible. Mission accomplished.

Now we move on to bigger fish. With another division title in hand and a trip to Atlanta for a national championship rematch against Alabama booked, it’s time to start looking ahead to the next goal for these Bulldogs.

The goal is simple: Beat Alabama in the SEC Championship Game and qualify for the College Football Playoff. Unfortunately, there are three games between now and the showdown in Atlanta. Thanks to the loss to LSU, another loss could dash Georgia’s playoff hopes before it even gets a chance to play the Tide.

In the final three weeks of the season, Georgia faces Auburn, UMass and Georgia Tech at home. The Dawgs can and should win each game. None of the three have more than six wins, and one of them is UMass. But the Dawgs could lose one of the games if it gets caught looking ahead to Alabama. The Tigers are talented enough to run with Georgia, even if they’ve been awful, and Georgia Tech’s triple-option can get the best of any defense that isn’t up for it.

Although there’s the danger of getting caught looking ahead, it’s a blessing of sorts that Georgia gets three games

The most pressing issue is physicality along both lines of scrimmage, which often manifests itself in poor execution on short yardage situations. It’s a problem on both sides of the ball, but more on offense than defense. (The defense’s biggest problem is tackling.) Kentucky, like Florida last week, denied Georgia multiple times on the 1-yard line and forced a field goal in the fourth quarter.

The short-yardage issues can at least partially be chalked up to the high number of injuries suffered by offensive linemen. With so many guys out at different points of the season, there’s been no way to build continuity among that young group of players. Staying healthy over the next three games, specifically at offensive line, will be integral to challenging Bama for the SEC. The good news is that, in general, the team seems to be hitting its stride at the right time. Jake Fromm is back to playing within himself and not making silly mistakes, while the running backs are living up to their significant hype. Against Kentucky, D’Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield rushed for 156 and 115 yards, respectively. On defense, they’re finally figuring out how to stop the run, limiting the Wildcats to 84 yards. All told, in the last two weeks Georgia has looked much better than it did for stretches of the first half of the season or in the loss to LSU. But “better” may not matter against Alabama, because, my God, it might be the best college football team I’ve ever seen. Case in point: Alabama went to Baton Rouge on Saturday—a place where Georgia lost to LSU by 20 points—and beat the Tigers 29-0. Tua Tagavailoa had by far his worst game of the season. He passed for 295 yards and two touchdowns. Against Georgia, LSU gained 475 yards and gave up 322. Against Alabama, it gained 196 yards and gave up 576.

The goal is to beat Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, but that shouldn’t necessarily be the expectation.

We’ve watched this Georgia team for nine games now, and there just seem to be too many issues to mount a real national title challenge this season. But most of the best players on this team have multiple years of eligibility remaining, and Kirby Smart is constantly stocking the cupboard with 4- and 5-star talent.

This might not be the year, but the Dawgs will be better next season and even better the season after that. The window of opportunity is not about to close. So while it would be disappointing to lose to Alabama in the SEC Championship, it wouldn’t be devastating. It wouldn’t even be unexpected. f

Game On TRADITIONAL GAMING THRIVES IN ATHENS, BUT ESPORTS ARE ON THE RISE

“Games are good for everyone,” says Sean Holland, who has owned and operated Tyche’s Games on Lumpkin Street, in the middle of the UGA campus, since 1997. His store specializes in traditional board games, card games and role-playing games (RPGs), in addition to holding weekly events that attract a diverse crowd from the area. Since opening, Tyche’s has worked closely with gaming clubs at the university, as well as similar groups all around Athens.

Holland says that, during his experience working and writing for the RPG industry over the years, he has seen it grow, shrink and then stabilize again. He describes his clientele as 30–40 percent UGA students, and the rest are locals.

Stocked with over 800 games, downtown cafe The Rook & Pawn is a unique local gaming space. Locals Tim and Carrie Kelly opened the restaurant in 2015. Events for all ages and are held throughout the week, and the venue offers traditional old-school board games along with newer role-playing games. The Rook & Pawn doesn’t have any screens or televisions, in an effort to keep interactions personal and tech-free.

“It’s very analog, and you have to be very present,” says Tim Kelly. “You’re not hiding behind anything, you’re not on a screen,

you’re not talking through a microphone.

It’s just you and the people you’re around the table with.”

Though traditional gaming is still going strong in Athens, there is also a growing focus on electronic online gaming, or esports. UGA even has an electronic gaming club, Esports at UGA. The club started a few years ago and has a membership body of around 200, with 50–100 people attending each event.

“Gaming is an activity for everyone, and this is something where everyone is truly equal and we can all enjoy the same activity,” says the club’s community manager, Emily Morrow.

Not only is Morrow active in the esports club, but she also branched off with a friend to start their own club, Girls for Games.

“My goal is to just provide a space for LGBTQ people, women [and] minorities to find a place where they can be comfortable to discuss games and also discuss making games,” Morrow says.

Both clubs have been well received at UGA, and Morrow says she sees them growing. “We live in a time where these two organizations are viable, we feel as though they’re respected, and we provide real opportunities for members in leadership. It’s just a great day to be a gamer,” Morrow says.

Advocates for both types of gaming have reasons why they prefer theirs over the other, but it’s clear that they are equally important to the larger gaming community. Traditional gaming has been around longer, and those who play are adamant that it will stick around for many years to come. “I love games online, but the ability to be able to sit across from somebody and actually physically interact with them is awesome,” Teskey says.

Holland agrees, saying traditional gaming is “a chance to get away from the constant barrage of media in our lives and just focus on one thing and your friends.”

Meanwhile, the UGA esports group is more social-media-driven.

“The ease of being able to play with others and your friends at any given time is a really big draw for online-based games,” Morrow says.

Local gamers of all stripes agree that the main draw is community—playing with friends and potential friends. “If you find out somebody plays the same game as you or enjoys the same games that you do, it’s just this instant connection and instant friendship—a mutual understanding,” says Morrow. f

By Pete McCommons pete@flagpole.com My older cousin by marriage, Bob Bryan, was an ardent Democrat, and he was liberal, even back when most Democrats weren’t. In the pre-internet days, Bob clipped articles out of newspapers and magazines and carried them around in his wallet. He loved to talk politics, and whenever I ran into him, Bob showed me something from the library stashed with his money, and he would stand there while I read it, impatient to know what I thought and to tell me what he thought. My cousin Lew keeps his father’s informative interests alive, from time to time sending out links to articles he thinks are worth reading.

We all have friends and family with whom we exchange articles, thoughts, comments and reactions to what’s happening.

Since Donald Trump began dominating the news cycle, we’ve all had a lot to share. It’s a way of reassuring each other that we’re not alone, that we’re not crazy and that down is not up, even if the president of the United States says it is.

In sharing articles and outrages from our digital wallets over the years, I have noticed a particularly somber reaction among Jewish friends, almost an expectation of the worst. Their attitudes struck me as outmoded, as a hangover from the horrible atrocities of the Nazis that began almost a century ago, that we have read about all our lives as history.

We could never understand how such a highly cultured and educated country like Germany could succumb to Nazism, but they did, and we beat them, and democracy prevailed against the dark forces of hatred and destruction. All you have to do is watch Casablanca to be reminded of who the good guys are and that nobody would want to be on the other side.

Our Jewish friends know better than to be lulled by the Hollywood ending. For centuries, they have been the targets when people are under pressure and are looking for somebody to blame, when leaders inflame resentment instead of addressing the problems that cause it. Now, we find ourselves again in a period of social stress, with a president who preaches divisiveness and others who echo it. His message is based on blame, and it emboldens the blamers.

It’s hard to believe that blame and hatred can be stirred here, especially against those who excel at being Athenians. Jewish Athenians enrich the intellectual endeavors at the university; they add savvy to our commerce and professionalism to our medical offices; and they enliven our arts and bolster our creativity. We enjoy their friendship and their civic concern. Our charities benefit from their generosity of time, talent and resources; our lives are enhanced by their sense of ethics and humane values. The Jewish community is intertwined in and indistinguishable from the Athens community. We are all Athenians. To hate any of us is to hate all of us.

Athens is like Rick’s Café Americain in Casablanca— filled with a rich diversity of nationalities and people who respect each other and share a fervent desire for freedom and an opposition to oppression.

Rick’s is no place for Nazis, and Athens abhors the Klan mind that builds illusions of superiority through belittling and dehumanizing those it thinks it can bully.

We have problems, and we have a renewed commitment to finding solutions when our new local government gets organized at the first of the year. As usual, and regardless of who is governor, we need to keep on working to make Athens a sanctuary city for the human spirit and to resist and discourage those whose motives are drawn from hatred.

We all need to be more like cousin Bob Bryan: filled with enthusiasm for ideals of justice and fairness and happy to convince anybody why that’s the best way to live.

No city, no school, no church is immune from the twisted hatred that seeks release in the murder of innocent people.
