Half of ACCPD Officers Aren’t From Athens The cultural divide and morale problems in the local police force exposed by former police chief Scott Freeman’s forced resignation last month may have something to do with half of officers living outside of Clarke County.

Only 50 percent of ACCPD officers live in Athens, interim chief Mike Hunsinger said at an Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement town-hall meeting on the future of policing last week. Recruits are applying online, and although Athens is a regional employment center, many are coming from outside the typical 50-mile radius.

Hunsinger said he wants to recruit more officers who are familiar with Athens. “We need to recruit more officers who live in this community to work here,” he said.

“They need to be people with demonstrated ability and demonstrated commitment to our values,” former mayor Gwen O’Looney added.

Commissioner-elect Tim Denson said that relatives of officers are saying “questionable things” on social media, calling them “a little bit of a toxic element.” For example, Athens for Everyone board member Imani Scott-Blackwell said, Shannon and Laura Saulters started a “Back the Blue” Facebook page and a fundraising campaign in support of fired officer Taylor Saulters, Shannon’s son and Laura’s husband,

in addition to an online petition to fire Freeman. Taylor Saulters’ father, Jerry, is an ACCPD captain, and Shannon Saulters works for District Attorney Ken Mauldin.

Hunsinger said he’s not on social media, so that’s news to him. “I can’t go to work every day not trusting the people I work with,” he said. “But if it comes to my attention, we will deal with it.”

Panelists also discussed community-oriented policing. UGA law professor Russell Gabriel noted the disparity between Hunsinger’s support for the philosophy and Commissioner Mariah Parker’s description of her East Athens constituents as fearful and distrustful of the police. “Going out and talking to people is nice, but what happens when police flip into authority mode?”

Gabriel said.

Many in the audience of about 100 cheered when Parker and Denson said they want to disarm police. The obvious question, though, is what happens when criminals don’t do the same? “The only reason we carry guns is the presence of firearms in our society,” Hunsinger said. “If we can solve that, I’m right there with you. The Athens Area and Oconee County chambers of commerce have scheduled the first nonpartisan Athens candidate forum of this election season, to be held Thursday, Oct. 11 from 6–8 p.m. in the auditorium on the third floor of Piedmont Athens Regional’s medical services building at 242 King Ave. Confirmed candidates include state Sen. Bill Cowsert (R-Athens), state Sen. Frank Ginn (R-Danielsville) and Democratic challenger Dawn Hawkins Johnson, state Rep. Students: Please Don’t Adopt Pets Dear UGA students, Welcome to Athens. This is probably your first experience living away from your parents’ homes and your parents’ rules.

What a rush, right? Freedom!

You’ve picked out your furniture and computer. The majority of you will have roommates, whether it’s in a dorm, an apartment, a rental house, wherever.

Preferably these people are already your friend(s) or boy/girlfriend, or else you’ll soon become friends. Meeting new people is part of the whole college experience.

Everything is going along just right. What else could you need?

How about getting a pet? Wouldn’t it be great to have a puppy or kitten, or a couple of them? OMG! They’re so cute!

Don’t do it. PLEASE don’t do it.

I moved to Athens in 1992 to attend UGA’s veterinary college. I remained in Athens after graduating in 1996, and that’s when I first became aware of what I call “The Letting Loose of the Pets.” Like clockwork, every May there’s a dramatic increase in the number of stray dogs and cats.

Although there are some feral cat colonies in various locations in Athens, the dogs and cats I’m referring to are not wild, untouchable animals. They have been socialized— have lived under the care of someone who can no longer have their pet live with them.

There are a variety of “reasons” or excuses why this happens: moving to a different apartment/house that doesn’t allow pets; new roommate or girl/boyfriend is allergic to the pet; returning to parents’ home for the summer, and they won’t allow any animals; roommates are going to different living situations and no one will accept responsibility for the dog or cat; graduation; a pet won’t fit into travel plans.

As a veterinarian, an animal lover and a responsible human being, it breaks my heart and pisses me off when I see this

pattern repeated year after year. Most of these domesticated pets who’ve relied on their humans for food, shelter, veterinary care and companionship don’t have a clue how to fend for themselves. They end up hanging around fast-food dumpsters or eating pet food put out for another person’s pets. They get weak and susceptible to diseases from other animals they encounter.

They get hit by cars. They can be killed by coyotes.

So, no, don’t adopt that cute little puppy or kitten while you’re in school. Chances are that between classes, studying and partying, you won’t have the time that pet deserves from you. This can often lead to behavior problems, like chewing up pillows. One of the main reasons pets are surrendered to animal shelters is “behavior problems.”

Decide where you will live, work and start a family. Then it might be the right time to adopt a pet for whom you can provide all the material things, as well as the love, play and training that will turn her or him into a beloved family member for the next 10–20 years.

I am pleased to see our nation’s flag displayed, but it is important that it be done so properly and with respect. I am aware that some people use the flag in a form of protest. As a veteran, I know that most of my fellow veterans are people of color. I also know the pride with which we all serve our country and flag.

Give Trump a Chance Daily, I meet and am forced to interact with people whom I am not so thrilled about. But the ability to compartmentalize our emotions and act with mature restraint and self-control is the mark of adulthood and good citizenship.

For just one example, there is a lot about President Trump that I do not much like.

Additionally, I often wonder how temperamentally suited he is for the job.

While he may or may not be terribly misguided in his views, he is both sane and loves this country (which has provided him with the opportunity to personally profit so stupendously). He has also distinguished himself as a very capable executive and businessman with a proven ability to run large multinational organizations and to effectively manage thousands of people.

At times, like many others who support him, I find the man brash, uncouth, often disrespectful toward women and others, and also prone to undignified and troublesome outbursts. But no one is perfect. And I am not his judge, God is.

Furthermore, I also harbor deep reservations about the merging of enormous financial wealth with the power of the presidency. It is evident in all their writings that the founders viewed any such concentration of power as an extremely dangerous situation. This is why we have checks and balances between the three branches built all throughout our political system.

But there is concurrently a potential upside to having a billionaire as president.

It has been argued that someone of such incredible wealth is less able to be bought.

And that’s a good thing.

Like it or not, the man is in the position now. For the sake of our country, the left must lick their wounds and finally get over their election defeat. This is no time to dig in, throw tantrums or cling to being sore losers. Let this man get on with the job, because to not do so paralyzes the important work of government and the progress of our entire nation.

Only a few months ago, CNN reported that President Jimmy Carter said that, although he was diametrically opposed to many of President Trump’s views, he was still willing to give the man a chance.

For the sake of our entire country, every Democrat should strive to do the same.

Trump should be given every chance to succeed, regardless of how we personally feel about him. At bottom this is not about Trump—it’s about America!

Gerrymandering Divides Us I am a former two-term local elected official from a county near Clarke (Jasper) who was victimized by political opponents employing ridiculous gerrymandering of districts. My nonsensical district looked like a horseshoe.

More importantly, gerrymandering is one of the key reasons our great nation is so politically divided. By making a district either overwhelmingly Republican or Democrat, politicians who dwell in the swamp protect themselves and radicalize politics. There is no need to appeal to the middle, just your base. That is true whether on the local, state or national level.

If you want to see who these swamp dwellers are, just find out who was on the committees doing the redistricting. In every case, you will find them in a strangely drawn district, often dividing cities or counties in half.

These districts are designed not to reflect the will of the voters, but rather to keep themselves and their fellow good old boys in office. Before the 2018 election, see who was on the 2010 committees, and if they are still in office, vote against them.

Since Wallace’s expertise is in technology, he said he will continue to push for digital privacy and security. “I think people don’t realize how much information we share with one another, with companies and corporations about our personal lives, and how much power is contained within that information,” he said. “Sharing that information without being cognizant of it will ultimately limit our freedom.”

Another key issue of Wallace’s campaign is to protect the state’s elections by switching to a paper ballot immediately.

Georgia’s voting machines are outdated, he says, running on Windows 2000 software.

Wallace is also campaigning on ending gerrymandering by pushing for an independent redistricting commission and allowing Georgians to pre-register to vote when they turn 16.

For Wiedower, a key issue is fostering local, small businesses. “I have owned a business for almost 20 years, and I know firsthand about the taxes and regulations,” Wiedower said. He mentioned that last year Oconee County increased the price of building permits overnight to a range of $4,000–$5,000.

But the hot topic for a majority of conservative candidates during the midterm election has been immigration reform. At a College Republicans meeting on Aug. 29, Wiedower rebuked Wallace and Rep. Deborah Gonzalez (D-Athens) for criticizing Clarke County Sheriff Ira Edwards’ policy of holding undocumented jail inmates for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport—a policy Edwards later reversed.

“What you’re not going to see me do is speak out against our sheriff,” Wiedower said. “It’s a growing concern on a daily basis. You can see in the atmosphere that tends to develop around a sanctuary city that it’s not just about criminal illegals… it’s an atmosphere of how we enforce the law. We are a nation of laws.”

In response, Wallace said immigration is not a concern for him nor constituents he has spoken to while canvassing.

Campaigning on immigration reform is “appealing to the politics of fear,” he said.

“We’re restricting local freedoms and [forcing] local folks to cooperate with the federal government. From a pragmatic perspective, that does not make financial sense. The federal government has their job, and I expect them to do that. I expect them to provide national defense. When we

or the second year in a row, Republican Marcus Wiedower and incumbent Democrat Jonathan Wallace will face off at the polls to win state House of Representatives seat 119.

Last year, Wallace won the district with nearly 57 percent of the vote, defeating Wiedower and two other Republicans. Though Wallace won in a landslide in last year’s special election, Wiedower said he remains confident going into November. “We wouldn’t be in this race if we weren’t optimistic,” he said.

The main issues Wiedower is focusing on going into the election are improving local schools, controlling local transportation projects and not increasing taxes.

Other issues he hopes to tackle include lowering health-care costs, providing more funding for schools, pushing cybersecurity and digital privacy and investing in infrastructure that is permissible for future forms of transportation.

Overall, Wallace said health-care costs have been the No. 1 concern among constituents. “When we talk about health-care costs, what we’re really talking about is people’s freedom,” Wallace said. “You want to be able to follow your heart or where your passion leads you to do the best work in this world. You may not be able to do that because you’re forced to work a job that has health care that is necessary for your family.”

Wallace told Flagpole he hopes to close the health-care gap by expanding Medicaid. He added that health care is a growing concern in Georgia, since seven hospitals have closed in the last five years.

Education is at the forefront of both candidates’ campaigns. Wallace said he wants to revisit the formula used to fund schools, which has not been revised since 1985.

Meanwhile, Wiedower’s campaign is pushing for improvements to and funding for local schools and ensuring the University of Georgia remains “the economic driver of the community.”

As for transportation, Wiedower wants more local

Come Together LATINXFEST CELEBRATES FOOD, MUSIC, DANCE AND MORE

atinx Heritage Month, Sept. 15–Oct. 15, recognizes the contributions of Latin Americans to the U.S. and celebrates the many cultures of Americans from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This week, the celebration will come to Athens for the ninth annual LatinxFest on Saturday, Oct. 13.

The festival—presented by Dignidad Inmigrante en Athens (DIA), the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition (AIRC) and

criticism, and in April Edwards reversed it.

“We are humans, and this is our home,” Mendoza said. “This is going to be a space for us to come together… for us to be real, to have an opinion, to be a part of the scene and to be like a real family.”

Mendoza said most of the Latinx community did not feel welcome downtown before the festival was started in 2010.

Food, music and dance will highlight the event. Beto Mendoza, the coordinator of the event and leader of Dignidad Inmigrante en Athens, said performances will include a mariachi band, salsa dancers and traditional and modern dance from a variety of Latinx cultures. Performers will include El Chupaskabra, Incatepec, Tonali, Lydia Brambila (see review on p. 11) and more. The event will also have activities for kids, food booths and vendors.

The festival is “a great chance for the Latinx community to celebrate the food, music, dance and people that make our cultures special, and to share all that with the larger community,” Mendoza said in a press release.

This year will be the first time the event will be held on downtown streets. Mendoza said he believes the festival will attract more people than previously. In years pasts, the festival had between 500–700 attendees. This year, Mendoza said he’s hoping for at least 1,000 attendees. However, AthensClarke County police are advising the organizers to expect more.

The past year has been one of many struggles and triumphs for the local Latinx community. In July 2017, Clarke County Sheriff Ira Edwards instituted a new policy of complying with ICE requests to hold undocumented inmates for up to 48 hours. While detained, ICE could pick up and deport undocumented inmates, many of whom had not been convicted of a crime. The policy was met with widespread

entry to those who didn’t comply with their dress codes, he said.

“Before, we never held the event in downtown Athens, because it was segregated. Now, we think that we are 12–20 percent of the population in Athens, so we think it’s time to say, ‘We are here,’” Mendoza said. The festival started in 2010 at the Pinewoods library in northeastern Athens, then moved around to other locations in immigrant neighborhoods before settling in at Creature Comforts for several years.

“The Hispanic community has lived in Athens for many, many years… We have a big percentage of migrant communities that have been marginalized,” he continued.

Mendoza said the Trump Administration has created a misconception amongst Americans about Latinx people, but this festival offers the chance to prove the perceptions false. “That is one of the things that the government tries to portray,” he said. “The conservatives and many people in the South believe that the brown people are drug dealers and rapists… criminals and illegals.”

Mendoza said whether attendees are citizens, documented or undocumented, “we can come together, because we are part of the same family.” f

What’s in a Label?

CRUISIN’ RECORDS OFFERS A SAFE SPACE FOR QUEER MUSICIANS

heo Hilton, an Athens native and As a queer artist, the cause is personal founder of the acclaimed folk-punk for Hilton. He says he had a difficult time band Nana Grizol, has embarked on a new finding queer-friendly spaces when he project—a record label catering specifically was younger, and now that he has more to the queer community. Hilton’s Cruisin’ Records currently has five signees and is quickly growing. In order to help the label serve its intended purpose, Hilton says all its bands either have queer-identifying members or otherwise support the LGBTQ community.

Hilton says the idea for Cruisin’ came about a few years ago, when he began to see a need for a queer-friendly space in the wider music community. He partnered with Clyde Peterson, a longtime friend and member of the Seattle band Your Heart Breaks, and they pooled their resources to kickstart the label.

Though he had a support group of friends,

he says spaces for those who were questioning their identity were difficult to come by. After he moved from Athens to Seattle, he said he found more spaces that were LGBTQ-friendly, but very few were related to the music scene.

“As a songwriter and band member, the most important thing for me is to speak directly about that part of my experience,” Hilton says. “It’s important to have spaces where we can be critical and also be affirmed.”

After discussing the initial Cruisin’ concept with Peterson, Hilton began to reach out to bands interested in releasing music on the label. Its first batch of releases is out this fall, and includes albums by three different artists: Delicate Art,

by L.A.’s Lonesome Leash; Theo Zumm, a collection of early home recordings by Nana Grizol; and a reissue of ManDate’s Oral History.

Peterson also plays bass guitar in ManDate, and says he is excited for the album’s Cruisin’ release.

“I’m interested in the places where punk rock and the queer community interact,” Peterson says. “Those things aren’t part of traditional capitalist culture, and finding our own way and making our own spaces has always been part of queer culture.”

Both Peterson and Hilton says the goal of Cruisin’ is to give a voice to those who feel as though they are not being heard.

Peterson says that if a musician can find somewhere to feel included and get support, both their music and overall livelihood

will benefit.

“We found bands who didn’t have enough support and gave them what we could to help,” Peterson says. “After this many years of playing and touring, we know a little more than someone just starting out, so we want to make it easier for them.”

Ultimately, Peterson and Hilton want to see both music and queer communities succeed, and when they couldn’t find a space where the two areas intersected, they created one. Hilton says he envisions Cruisin’ eventually growing beyond the typical label format, adding that he “hope[s] to use Cruisin’ as a platform to organize events and intentional queer spaces” in cities around the country.

Hilton will return to Athens Saturday, when Nana Grizol headlines an all-ages show at Kindercore Vinyl, and he says he is excited to come home as someone who is more confident and comfortable in his identity.

“It’s interesting to think about my perception of myself as a queer person and how that’s changed since I was younger,” Hilton says. “The introduction of queer spaces in music changed how I thought of myself, and that’s why I want to create a space where that can be possible for other artists, as well.” f

New West Plans Glands Releases PLUS, MORE MUSIC NEWS AND GOSSIP

By Gordon Lamb threatsandpromises@flagpole.com GLAND GESTURE: In a move that can best be described as a labor of love, New West Records is planning a truly magnanimous tribute to Athens band The Glands. The group was long a favorite among discerning fans, even while its actual output and live schedule always left those fans wanting more. To the issue of recorded material, New West has got everyone covered. First, the long-awaited and often-rumored third album by the group, Double Coda, will see release Friday, Nov. 9. (The label will host a listening party at the Georgia Theatre the same day.) The album runs a whopping 23 tracks, and its final production was overseen by drummer Joe Rowe, bassist Derek Almstead and engineer David Barbe. Additionally, the label is re-releasing the band’s 1996 debut, Double Thriller, as well as its self-titled 2000 album. Each of these is to be available via digital

Based on his participation in certain other local groups (Programs, Scooterbabe), the electronic pop sound he perpetuates here isn’t a total surprise, but it’s highly developed and has a lot going on underneath the surface. Opening track “NHS” takes its information from Sparks and Roxy Music, whereas “Analogarhythm” disperses its Depeche Mode best among sweeping piano trills and clarinet (I think). Final track “St. Anthony” is by far the darkest thing here, but it’s not evil or mad or even particularly explicitly sad. Rather, it’s a propulsive tune that moves tonally and rhythmically with the stride of the listener. That is to say, no matter how crowded the room is when it’s playing, you’ll only ever hear it alone. Museum comes out Oct. 12 via Outer Worlds Records, and on that date you can check it out at superpuppet.bandcamp.com.

Glands founder and songwriter Ross Shapiro passed away in 2016. While it’s impossible to truly discern what he’d think of all this, chances are good he’d crack a wry grin and say, “That’s cool, y’all.”

JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH: Author of the incisive book Babbling Corpse: Vaporwave and the Commodification of Ghosts Grafton Tanner is back in the musical ring with his new project, Superpuppet, and a new EP, Museum.

GOOD JOB: AthFest Educates, the nonprofit initiative for which the annual music festival and half-marathon raises money, distributed $40,612 in grants recently. The organization reported via a press release that both the festival and road race have been so successful recently, it was able to fund nearly half of the grant requests it received this year. This time around, funds were granted to the UGA Performing Arts Center, Fowler Drive Elementary and Hilsman Middle School. Each grant goes toward multiple, extensive projects that often involve the combined efforts of the receiving institution and volunteers, students, educators and arts professionals. Additionally, continuing education grants went to music teachers from Alps Road, Gaines School Road, Timothy Road and Oglethorpe elementary schools.

record review Lydia Brambila: Migraineur (Independent Release) As a member of the local psychedelic surf-rock group Outersea, Lydia Brambila lets her guitar do the talking, providing a steady, rumbling counterweight to bandmate Kris Deason’s jittery riffs. On her new solo record, Brambila leads with her own voice, delivering eight sparse, dreamy “songs about trees, water, fauns and flight” that explore celestial realms while remaining tethered to folk tradition.

Brambila’s earthy fingerpicking on Migraineur suggests an affinity for a certain monastic breed of singer-songwriter from the 1960s and ’70s. Yet the album’s sense of melody and structure lends it a modern clarity, creating a hybrid approach that should appeal to fans of soft-psych explorers like Samara Lubelski.

Drenched in reverb, Brambila’s singing is the record’s sparkling centerpiece, while her lyrics resonate in unexpected ways given our current cultural reality. On the spectral mid-album gem “Cloister,” the songwriter navigates the concept of woman as mystic and martyr, as a chaotic universe’s moral guiding force. [Gabe Vodicka]

Looking Ahead TOUGH STRETCH AWAITS DAWGS AFTER ANOTHER EASY WIN

It should also come as no surprise that, despite a thoroughly dominant performance, the score could have been much worse.

Georgia has scored at least 38 points in all six games this season. The defense has given up more than 17 points only once.

This is also the first time the Dawgs have started 6–0 in consecutive seasons in pro-

gram history. By all accounts, this is one of the hottest first halves of a season any Georgia football team has ever had. But there’s still so much untapped potential in this edition of the Bulldogs that you can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment about their performance.

These lackluster-yet-dominant showings are both a blessing and a curse—a blessing because we know that if and when the Dawgs do put it all together this season, the sky is the limit; a curse because they’re about to enter the toughest stretch of their schedule with four consecutive games against teams that are currently ranked in the top 25. Over the next month or so, Georgia will either prove just how good it is and run away with the SEC East or fall under the weight of an unexpectedly tough run of games.

Over the next five weeks, Georgia has LSU in a highly-anticipated trip to Baton Rouge, a bye week, a Florida side looking much improved over their early-season form in the WLOCP, an away game in Lexington against the upstart Kentucky Wildcats and the third game in the span of a year against Auburn. At the start of the season, LSU and Auburn seemed to be the only challenges in this stretch. But as the season has unfolded, Florida and Kentucky have also played much better than most thought.

Many Georgia fans circled the LSU game the day it was put on the schedule. And although there will still be thousands of Georgia fans down in the Bayou enjoying

which would have given the Gators two SEC losses and effectively ended their chances to win the East. But with an LSU win on their schedule, the Gators are an upset of Georgia away from stealing the East. I know we were all hoping for an easy, drama-free Cocktail Party this season, but that ain’t happening, folks.

Kentucky was the dark-horse challenger of the SEC East before last week, and in many ways they still are, but the Cats took a big hit with a loss to Texas A&M in College Station. But at 5–1 with its only current SEC loss coming from the West, Kentucky still has an outsider’s shot in the East and the ability to give Georgia a lot of heartburn in Lexington.

Then there’s Auburn, which lost its first game of the season, falling 23–9 to Mississippi State. It’s a disappointing setback for the Tigers that pretty much ruins any chance they had in West. But, like LSU, Auburn is one of the few teams that can match up with Georgia athletically. And depending on how things shake out, the Dawgs could be attempting to clinch the East against its toughest opponent of the regular season.

So be prepared for the next month. It’ll be the most stressful stretch of the season by far. But maybe a little stress is just what Georgia needs to tap into some of that untapped potential and finally play the way we know it’s capable of playing. Because it’ll need to if it’s gonna go make it through the next month unscathed. f

Athens Actors Revolt WOMEN ARE FED UP ON LOCAL STAGES

Furious words are pouring out in every medium: stories long repressed of #whyididntreport, curses aimed at the callous men in power, kindness and understanding shared between survivors, wordless primal screams at the pain of it all. How do we speak of the unspeakable?

Why should we follow the rules of polite discourse while the wrongdoers spin lies and shout women into silence? How do we break repressive habits of speech? How do we talk about the most personal, painful, joyful, essential, enraging parts of our lives?

These wider questions are at the heart of UGA Theatre’s Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again, an eerily well-timed production for those who want to smash the patriarchy and wrestle with the challenges of being a woman today. First produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2014 and opening Off-Broadway in 2016, it’s an angry, experimental, sometimes funny, deliberately revolutionary play that defies a simple summary.

The play’s text is open and fragmented, usually lacking clear character delineations so that it could be played as any number of characters and genders. Director Elise Robinson has created an intentionally feminist rehearsal process, using a highly collaborative approach that focuses on playing with language and seeing what relationships emerge. The actors (Alexa Adcock, Brooke McCarthy, T. Lynn Mikeska, Kya Missick, Eva Ramirez, Atalanta Siegel, David Cowan, Evan King and Luis Omar Perez) “have noted what a privilege it is to be working on this play at this time,” Robinson says. “To take all the insanity and use it to channel our creative energies into being productive.”

Costumed Canines HOW TO DRESS YOUR DOG FOR BOO-LE-BARK

og lovers who also love Halloween, rejoice: The third annual Boo-leBark on the Boulevard happens Sunday, Oct. 14 from 4–6 p.m. The event involves a parade, costume contest, food vendors and activities for the entire family.

Boo-le-Bark is sponsored by local nonprofit Athens Pets and is an opportunity for owners to dress their pets up in costumes and walk them through a beautiful and historic part of town. Organizers describe it, simply enough, as “an opportunity for our community to come together over a shared love of dogs in costumes.”

Ashley Short, a member of the board that puts on the event, says this year is going to be the best Boo-le-Bark yet, due to minor changes, such as a tweak to the parade route and a change in start time.

“The parade is so much fun every year, and I think it’s going to be even bigger and better this year,” Short says. “I’m really excited to see who comes out.”

Short says that even if they don’t have a dog to walk in the parade, folks can still come out and enjoy the food and entertainment and experience the Canine Carnival at the Jittery Joe’s Roaster after the parade.

Do It Yourself SPOOKY SKELETON: The perfect costume for dogs who hate wearing clothes and/or love eating clothes you try to put on them. Use a non-toxic, pet-safe paint to paint some bones on your dog’s face and body. It’s an ideal look for dogs with a dark coat, but pet paint lends itself to endless possibilities.

White dogs can have a beet-juice muzzle inspired by Cujo. A pack of four dogs could include every member of Kiss.

GHOST: It doesn’t get more classic than cutting up a sheet. Cut holes for your dog’s eyes, muzzle and ears (if they’re pointy).

Bonus points if your dog has the skills the carry a jack-o-lantern basket. Just make sure your ghost dog doesn’t have to go up and down any stairs!

CHIA PET: Glue-gun a bunch of green aquarium plants to a dog sweater. You can sew four “sleeves” and attach them to a harness, or use orange pet paint to get those terra-cotta Chia Pet legs. Ch-ch-ch-chia!

LOOFAH: Take 8–10 yards of tulle, depending on the dog and the volume you’re trying to achieve. Gather the tulle into loops and bunches, and hot-glue or sew it in the roundest shape possible onto a dog shirt.

Attach a loop of thick cord. (Rubber duck optional.)

Sew a high collar on a black dog dress, and don’t forget the robe’s breast-piece appliques. If you go to all this trouble, you might as well finish the look with a pup-sized Lament Configuration replica.

Pizza Party TWO NEW SPOTS FOR EVERYONE’S FAVORITE FOOD

PIZZA NO. 1: How much is there, really, to say about pizza?

It’s hard (but possible) to screw it up. Pretty much everyone eats it. It’s an excellent family compromise that is, therefore, severely overpriced at theme parks. WUOG 90.5 FM’s “Athenian Eats” show, which airs Mondays at 4:30 p.m., spent a whole episode on it recently. I couldn’t even guess what percentage it makes up of the average college student’s diet, other than to say “a lot.”

I’m from Atlanta, which means the pizza I grew up eating the most and that shaped my opinion of what makes a perfect slice is from Fellini’s, which opened in 1982 and has seven locations. The folks who started Transmetropolitan, from what I remember, had some connection to Fellini’s, and the pies they made had a lot of similarities: big slices, crisped up briefly in the oven, less floppy than Little Italy’s and with a big pouf of floury crust at the end you hold in your hand. Transmet was sold last year, and over Starland Pizzeria & Pub the summer its new owners put some major changes in place, renaming it Starland Pizzeria & Pub (145 E. Clayton St., 706-613-8773), renovating the interior and radically simplifying the menu.

The single best change is the fact that you can now sit at a long but not too high bar downstairs, either to eat or to drink, which makes the environment much more pleasant.

Instead of entrees and a whole lot of predetermined topping combinations, the menu pretty much sticks to pizza.

At $3 for a basic slice and 50 cents per topping, it’s a little pricier than some of its competitors, but the slice itself is

a massive one. The slice and a salad combo, for $6 (which doesn’t include a drink), is a heck of a lot of food, and you can pick from three salads: garden, Caesar or Greek.

The toppings probably aren’t quite as fancy as those at Automatic, but you can get capicola or tempeh or zucchini as well as pepperoni. The Hungry Sasquatch (pepperoni, sausage, meatballs, ham, mushrooms, onion, green pepper, black olives) is still available, lest you worry, and quality control seems much improved, though I still miss the counter-ordering model a little.

Should you desire a calzone and balk at the prices ($9–$12), you should know that it appears to be the size of a medium pizza folded over and crimped. Unless you

can eat a huge amount of food, you will get two meals out of it. Ditto for the Zesto Pesto sandwich, available with or without chicken and always with pesto, mozzarella, tomato, basil and spinach, which doesn’t need the meat. The white bean dip with focaccia isn’t anything special, and some of the bread-based stuff, including the pizza crust, can be a hair underbaked.

The reverse of the menu includes a selection of cocktails, including a surprising number of tropical-themed rum-based ones (Dark ’n’ Stormy, Pain Killer, Jungle Bird),

a daily sangria, frosé, housemade limoncello, a small selection of wine by the bottle or glass and a bottled/canned beer list that goes from Miller High Life to Birmingham, AL-based Trim Tab’s Paradise Now. It’s a good mix of standards and more interesting stuff. Starland is open Sunday through Thursday until midnight and Friday and Saturday until 2 a.m.

PIZZA NO. 2: You probably aren’t aware of Crazy Dough’s Artisan Slice Bar (115 Hickory St., 706-395-4458) unless you live in the behemoth development The Mark, just down the hill from downtown. Pulling into its parking area feels like visiting another city, and the parking meters appear to be a work in progress (plus, there are signs posted by a company with the word “booting” in its name that do not inspire confidence).

There’s the usual amount of franchise word salad about passion and fine ingredients, but the pizza itself isn’t bad. Some of it has too much in the way of ingredients, including various drizzles (balsamic, barbecue sauce, buttermilk ranch, Gochujang aioli).

Pizza does not need drizzles. Various pies, both “gourmet” and proletarian, sit behind glass for you to point at and receive slices of.

The high-powered oven that briefly crisps and heats your slice does its job well and makes the experience feel a little less like Cici’s.

Regular cheese slices are $3, gourmet ones are $4, and whole pies are available as well. The crust is very thin, which works well for the body of a slice but is a little cracker-like at the wide end. Here again, there is a bit of overpromising on the ingredients, which may turn out to be small breaded chicken nuggets.

Stubborn brand craft sodas make things feel more upscale, and you can get various gelato-based things, like an affogato (made with Phoenix Roasters nitro), an ice cream sandwich or a milkshake. Crazy Dough’s is open from 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, until midnight Thursday, until 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday and closed Sunday. It delivers for free to Mark residents. f

He’s Cheating Again ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

Neither of us were super focused types at the time, and there was a lot of infidelity and leaving things unsaid. I forgave a lot back then, and after a while, he appreciated it and got serious about us.

Things have been pretty great for a while now, but fast forward to last week, when I found out that he cheated on me. I don’t want to share details, but please trust and believe that I know this to be fact. I’ve done my due diligence, and there’s no doubt in my mind about it—though he hasn’t confessed to me yet.

I’m hurt and furious, of course, but the thing is, I’m worried that I set some sort of precedent by forgiving him so many times back when he was a scumbag, and I’m not sure how to broach the subject. He’s been really good for years now, and I’m worried about disturbing the peace we’ve finally achieved.

You have to talk about this, unless you want him to take it as a sign that this kind of behavior is OK. So what if you forgave it years ago? It’s not OK now, and he knows that, no matter what happened in your past. You can bring it up in the same way that you’d bring up anything else, because your feelings and concerns are valid, and I hope he is humble and receptive.

You don’t seem to want to break up with him, and that’s cool. I do believe that couples can come back from infidelity, and I’m happy you have someone who you think is worth the effort.

Gonzo Greatness PLUS, A TRIP TO THE SPIDER-VERSE AND AN AWARD-HUNGRY REMAKE

A self-indulgent streak does pad the running time to two hours on what should be a lean, mean hour-and-a-half of primo grindhouse fare, but more Mandy is not the worst thing in the world. If Cage focuses his energy on wild work with auteurs like Cosmatos in between the thrillers that pay his mortgage, he will go down as one of the greats of cult cinema. A STAR IS BORN (R) While the classic melodrama may be a hoary old tale, Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga and the tremendous supporting cast (led by Sam Elliot, Andrew Dice Clay and Dave Chappelle) retell it as well as one wants in a big-screen movie with its eye on an Oscar (or a dozen).

In the latest version, Cooper’s aging “rock star,” Jackson Maine, meets Gaga’s singer-songwriter Ally in a drag bar, where she is singing for and dreaming of her big break. Veteran audience members know where this sad, romantic tale is going.

Jackson cannot stop drinking, especially as Ally’s star shines brighter than his own, and is dying the slow death of a living legend.

The appeal of A Star Is Born skews older; those who remember Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand will enjoy it most. Who cares why Bradley Cooper decided his directorial debut should be the fourth big-screen remake of William Wellman’s tale when the performances are this sharp, the songs this catchy and the emotions this genuine? f

The Department of Foods and Nutrition at the University of Georgia seeks: Men and postmenopausal women between the ages of 50-75, with high or borderline-high cholesterol levels, who are NOT taking cholesterollowering or thyroid medications, who do not have diabetes, heart disease or food allergies, and who exercise less than 3 hours per week.

This study requires an 8-week commitment to eating the provided breakfast and lunch meals, along with a total of 4 testing visits (with blood draws) and 6 non-testing visits (to pick up meals).

Participants that complete the study can earn up to $175.

What Happens on Test Days?

• We will collect body measurements, measure your metabolism, and collect a fasting blood draw.

• Additionally, on two of the visits we will collect small amounts of blood several times and measure your metabolism before and after a meal throughout the morning.

What Happens on Non-testing Days?

• You will come to UGA to collect a week-long supply of meals and drop off some forms.

About Those Amendments THEY’LL BE ON YOUR BALLOT; HERE’S WHAT THEY MEAN

By Pete McCommons pete@flagpole.com As usual, most of this stuff should not be shoehorned into the Georgia Constitution, a document that has already been amended more than Brett Kavanaugh’s high school yearbook. Also as usual, it is impossible to know what these amendments actually accomplish, if you only read the summary concocted by the secretary of state (you know who). In fact, even after you read the full amendments as put on the ballot by the Georgia General Assembly, they’re still difficult to understand.

Make Georgia Great Again, like it was when this Chevy El Camino was new and the Democrats were in charge.

But wait: They were the same crowd that’s Republican now. Maybe we should just vote for the new breed of Democrats, who are not living in the past.

No. 1 permits the state to allocate money from sporting goods sales taxes to a fund to aid conservation of our natural resources. Sounds like a no-brainer, even though it will still be up to the legislature to devise legislation that makes it happen. Our Rep. Spencer Frye was one of the sponsors, so we can vote yes and thank Spencer for looking after our environment.

No. 2 sets up a statewide business court system, with judges appointed by the governor and approved by the legislature—a departure from our usual procedure of electing judges (except that they’re frequently appointed by the governor to fill vacancies that always seem to happen between elections). The state chamber of commerce is in favor of the amendment, but the need for the courts is unclear, and the proposed system would be expensive and duplicative of our present system of superior courts. I’m going to vote against this amendment, but I’m only a businessman, not a lawyer or a judge.

No. 3 changes the assessment for timberland with the stated purpose of making

concerning the accused in their cases and the right to be heard at hearings and to be informed when the accused has been released or has escaped. This amendment would strengthen rights already guaranteed under Georgia law. Sounds good.

No. 5 assures that in political jurisdictions where there are two or more public school systems, the larger one can call for a sales tax referendum, and the smaller one can share the proceeds on a per capita basis.

This one doesn’t apply to Athens, but it regularizes relations between school systems that have proven bumpy in some places.

There are also two referenda on the ballot.

Referendum A seeks to limit property tax increases in Atlanta. I don’t really understand it, and you don’t have to vote for or against it.

Referendum B is equally arcane, but it seems to help people running nonprofit homes for the mentally disabled and is worth voting for, as I see it.

You already know which candidates to vote for. Now, go vote! f
