Immigration Email Rocks UGA PLUS, THE PRESIDENT’S LARGE ADULT SON ON CAMPUS AND MORE NEWS

By Ashlyn Webb news@flagpole.com A University of Georgia library employee is under investigation by UGA’s Equal Opportunity Office after sending an email via the university-wide library email list stating her controversial views on immigration.

The Office of Multicultural Services and Programs and organizations such as the Hispanic Student Association and NAACP recently received an anonymous letter that contained a copy of the email written by the library employee, Kay Altschul. The letter was sent during National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is Sept. 15–Oct. 15.

“To encourage illegal activity and give them food, house and rest and a Country to break our laws. That is how they began their life with our Country. What makes us think they will live with different morals since they’ve crossed over the border illegally? What do we want for this Country now? Total Immorality? Injustice? Chaos?

Cheating? Lying? Stealing? Killing?” the email, sent on June 20, reads.

Altschul later stated in the email that library employees need to “Unite and take a stand for our Country and let it be know we will not stand for injustice and lawbreakers.

If we don’t take a HARD stand now, we will have lawbreakers taking over our country.”

The message was referred to EOO to determine if it violated UGA’s discrimination and harassment policy, said Greg Trevor, executive director of media communications. The university prohibits harassment or discrimination on the basis of race, color, ethnicity or national origin against “any member of the University Community on campus, in connection with a University program or activity, or in a manner that creates a hostile environment for any member of the University Community.”

As the investigation is pending, Altschul continues to be employed by the university.

She currently is an accounting assistant in the UGA Main Library. Trevor said Altschul has worked at the university for the past 14 years.

Altschul’s email was in response to a statement from the American Library Association that was shared by another library employee on June 19 via the email list. The statement was in support of immigrant families and criticized the Trump Administration’s family separation policy.

Several library employees told Flagpole they’d been instructed not to speak to reporters, so they couldn’t talk on the record, but they said receiving ALA and other professional bulletins is common.

When Flagpole contacted Altschul for comment, she referred questions to Trevor.

Trevor said UGA Student Affairs has met with student leaders who have expressed their concerns. “We reaffirm our strong commitment to supporting a diverse, open and welcoming environment for our students, faculty and staff here at the University of Georgia,” he said.

Several university students and community members have taken to social media to voice their disappointment or outrage over the email.

“I wish I could say I’m surprised about the racism and negativity that lies within the folds of my university, but I’m not.

However, I refuse to let it impact me negatively. I’m transforming that energy into something positive by letting it motivate me and prove that we are above those statements,” said Crystal Gomez, a junior international affairs major and former political action chair of the Hispanic Student Association.

said the “racist and xenophobic” email is indicative of the “hateful, scapegoating comments coming from the White House, the Republican Party and a lot of wellfunded media outlets” and called for an “end to all deportations.”

top-heavy department. He told the Athens-Banner Herald that he was “committed to building on a solid foundation for community policing that was set in place by [former chief Jack] Lumpkin.” Privately, though, he described the department as “toxic.”

One of the ex-majors, Charles Newsome, immediately retired, and Carter Greene, the interim chief between Lumpkin and Freeman, soon followed. In May, Sizemore took a pay cut to become the Clarke County School District’s police chief, citing “leadership” as one of the reasons. Mike Hunsinger stayed, and Williams named him interim chief when Freeman resigned. Those interviewed said the restructuring led to a “downward spiral.”

Some also expressed frustration with Athens’ liberal politics and the perceived leniency of local prosecutors and judges—in particular, the sentence of time served and probation Justin Scott received in a plea deal after an officer shot him when Scott reached for a gun during questioning in 2016. “I found my coworkers to be outstanding,” Conner wrote in his exit interview. “I was highly frustrated by the political climate [and] court system.” The Cumming resident took a job in June with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Other complaints included the introduction of 10-hour shifts and the depletion of traffic patrols and criminal investigations—many officers felt stretched too thin or shuffled around away from their areas of expertise. Not being allowed to take patrol cars home was another frequent complaint.

Freeman also faced criticism for the people he promoted.

County commissioners pressed him at a work session last year on why his leadership team and a recent batch of promotions included mainly white officers. Freeman later appointed William Hood, an African American, captain and head of the uniform patrol division. Still, county officials noted a perception that women and minorities are “good enough for corporal, but not for sergeant.” One female officer who left said supervisors disparaged her for her small size and that the department has a “gender problem.”

As of July, 11 percent of officers were black and 3 percent were Hispanic, in a county that’s 28 percent black and 11 percent Hispanic. Only 11 percent were women.

In addition, Rodriguez, the PIO, is now on administrative leave. Interviewees alleged that he has a troubled past, and that Freeman pressured ACCPD’s Office of Professional Standards to reverse its recommendation against hiring him. Rodriguez told the ABH that he once stole some change to buy food as a teenager, spanked his child in public and called out of work once or twice when he wasn’t sick.

Some officers were also upset about the firing of Brad Collinsworth, a respected sergeant with a spotless record who admitted to using a cellphone to cheat on a test.

Issues came to a head on Sept. 13, when Williams gave Freeman the choice of resigning or being fired. He chose to resign and receive 90 days of severance pay.

Eight days later, Gregory also submitted his resignation, but said it was unrelated to Freeman’s. He told Flagpole that he had been thinking about changing careers for a year. “It’s time to figure out what to do with the rest of my life” after 23 years in law enforcement, he said.

The news of Freeman’s departure was not rolled out as planned because of an email glitch, according to a Sept.

“Unfortunately an inaccurate and somewhat misleading narrative took hold in the meantime both in the news and on social media platforms,” Hale wrote.

“There are a variety of contributing factors to the attrition, not all of which are due to the Chief or even under his control,” he continued. “Over the last three months to a year, the Manager has done a great deal of careful, thoughtful analysis of these circumstances. The Manager has determined that for wholly valid reasons or not, Chief Freeman does not have the full confidence of a majority of Department personnel. Further, given Chief Freeman’s considerable talent, technical skills and leadership ability, the Manager believes he might have regained the full confidence of the Department if given sufficient time.

ake news is not a new thing. With the return of its annual list of censored stories in Censored 2019: Fighting the Fake News Invasion, Project Censored’s vivid cover art recalls H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.

The situation today may feel as desolate as the cover art suggests. “But Censored 2019 is a book about fighting fake news,” editors Andy Lee Roth and Mickey Huff observed in the book’s introduction.

In the end, they argued that “critical media education—rather than censorship, blacklists, privatized fact-checkers or legislative bans—is the best weapon for fighting the ongoing fake news invasion.”

Project Censored’s mission, the editors point out, can be read in two different ways, “as a critique of the shortcomings of U.S. corporate news media for their failure to adequately cover these stories, or as a celebration of independent news media, without which we would remain either uninformed or misinformed about these crucial stories and issues.”

The cover art theme works at two levels, as the editors explain, which makes things more complex than might appear at first glance. First, the famous Orson Wells radio broadcast of the War of the Worlds on Oct. 30, 1938 used a number of dramatic devices to present the drama as though it were an actual crisis in progress. It became an example of the potential power of fake news in the radio media era. “The broadcast became legendary for allegedly leading to widespread panic throughout the United States,” the editors of Project Censored noted.

But both the audience size and degree of panic have been significantly inflated, as Jefferson Pooley and Michael J. Socolow have documented in a series of articles over the past decade. Just another form of fake news.

Constraints on government powers, which measures the extent to which those who govern are bound by law, saw the second greatest declines (64 countries out of 113 dropped). This is where the United States saw the greatest deterioration, World Justice Project stated in a press release.

The United States also scored notably poorly on several measurements of discrimination.

The four Nordic countries—Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden—remained in the top four positions. New

Basic Human Rights Diminish According to the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index 2017–2018, released in January 2018, a striking worldwide decline in basic human rights has driven an overall decline in the rule of law since October 2016, the month before Trump’s election. Fundamental rights—one of eight categories measured—declined in 71 out of 113 nations surveyed. Overall, 34 percent of countries’ scores declined, while just 29 percent improved. The United States ranked 19th, down one from 2016, with declines in checks on government powers and deepening discrimination.

Fundamental rights include absence of discrimination, right to life and security, due process, freedom of expression and religion, right to privacy, freedom of association and labor rights.

“All signs point to a crisis not just for human rights, but for the human rights movement,” Yale professor of history and law Samuel Moyn told The Guardian the day the index was released. “Within many nations, these fundamental rights are falling prey to the backlash against a globalising economy in which the rich are winning. But human rights movements have not historically set out to name or shame inequality.” This reflects the thesis of Moyn’s most recent book, Not Enough: Human Rights in an Unequal World.

Zealand, Canada and Australia were the only top 10 countries outside of Europe.

“The WJP’s 2017–2018 Rule of Law Index received scant attention from U.S. corporate media,” Project Censored noted. The only coverage they found was a Newsweek article drawing on The Guardian’s coverage. This pattern of ignoring international comparisons, across all subject matter, is pervasive in the corporate media. It severely cripples our capacity for objective self-reflection and self-improvement as a nation.

Intelligence Secrets Sold to Highest Bidders In March 2017, WikiLeaks released Vault 7, a trove of 8,761 leaked confidential CIA files about its global hacking programs, which WikiLeaks described as the “largest ever publication of confidential documents on the agency.”

It drew significant media attention. But almost no one noticed what George Eliason of OpEdNews pointed out.

“Sure, the CIA has all these tools available,” Eliason pointed out. “Yes, they are used on the public. The

important part is [that] it’s not the CIA that’s using them.

That’s the part that needs to frighten you.”

As Eliason went on to explain, the CIA’s mission prevents it from using the tools, especially on Americans. “All the tools are unclassified, open-source and can be used by anyone,” Eliason explained. “It makes them not exactly usable for secret agent work. That’s what makes it impossible for them to use Vault 7 tools directly.”

Drawing heavily on more than a decade of reporting

by Tim Shorrock for Mother Jones and The Nation, Eliason’s OpEdNews series reported on the explosive growth of private contractors in the intelligence community, which allows the CIA and other agencies to gain access to intelligence gathered by methods they’re prohibited from using.

In a 2016 report for The Nation, Shorrock estimated that 80 percent of an estimated 58,000 private intelligence contractors worked for the five largest companies. He concluded that “not only has intelligence been privatized to an unimaginable degree, but an unprecedented consolidation of corporate power inside U.S. intelligence has left the country dangerously dependent on a handful of companies for its spying and surveillance needs.”

Eliason reported how private contractors pioneered open-source intelligence by circulating or selling the information they gathered before the agency employing them had reviewed and classified it; therefore, “no one broke any laws.” As a result, according to Eliason’s second article, “People with no security clearances and radical political agendas have state-sized cyber tools at their disposal, [which they can use] for their own political agendas, private business, and personal vendettas.”

Corporate media reporting on Vault 7 sometimes noted but failed to focus on dangerous role of private contractors, Project Censored pointed out—with the notable exception of a Washington Post op-ed in which Shorrock reviewed his previous reporting and concluded that overreliance on private intelligence contractors was “a liability built into our system that intelligence officials have long known about and done nothing to correct.”

The 1 Percent Continue to Get Richer In November 2017, Credit Suisse released its 8th Annual Global Wealth Report, which The Guardian reported on under the headline, “Richest 1% own half the world’s wealth, study finds.”

The wealth share of the world’s richest people increased from 42.5 percent at the height of the 2008 financial crisis to 50.1 percent in 2017, or $140 trillion, The Guardian reported, adding that “The biggest losers… are young people who should not expect to become as rich as their parents.”

Despite being more educated than their parents, “millennials are doing less well than their parents at the same age, especially in relation to income, home ownership and other dimensions of well-being assessed in this report,” Rohner Credit Suisse Chairman Urs Rohner said. “We expect only a minority of high achievers and those in high demand sectors such as technology or finance to effectively overcome

the ‘millennial disadvantage.’”

Since 2000, the number of millionaires has risen by 2.3 million, or 170 percent. The number of people with net worths of over $50 million has increased five-fold. At the other end of the spectrum, the 3.5 billion poorest adults each have assets of less than $10,000. They account for 70 percent of the world’s population, but only 2.7 percent of the wealth.

“Tremendous concentration of wealth and the extreme poverty that results from it are problems that affect everyone in the world, but wealth inequalities do not receive nearly as much attention as they should in the establishment press,” Project Censored noted. “The few corporate news reports that have addressed this issue—including an August 2017 Bloomberg article and a July 2016 report for CBS’s ‘MoneyWatch’—focused exclusively on wealth inequality within the United States. As Project Censored has previously reported, corporate news consistently covers the world’s billionaires while ignoring millions of humans who live in poverty.”

Are Cell Phones and Wi-Fi Safe?

Are cell phones and other wireless devices really as safe we’ve been lead to believe? Don’t bet on it, according to decades of buried research reviewed in a March 2018 investigation for The Nation by Mark Hertsgaard and Mark Dowie.

“The wireless industry not only made the same moral choices that the tobacco and fossil-fuel industries did, it also borrowed from the same public relations playbook those industries pioneered,” Hertsgaard and Dowie reported. “Like their tobacco and fossil-fuel brethren, wireless executives have chosen not to publicize what their own scientists have said about the risks of their products… On the contrary, the industry—in America, Europe and Asia— has spent untold millions of dollars in the past 25 years proclaiming that science is on its side, that the critics are quacks, and that consumers have nothing to fear.”

Their report comes at the same time as several new

developments are bringing the issue to the fore, including a Kaiser Permanente study (published December 2017 in Scientific Reports) finding much higher risks of miscarriage; a study in the October 2017 American Journal of Epidemiology finding increased risk for glioma (a type of brain tumor); and a disclosure by the National Frequency Agency of France that nine out of 10 cell phones exceed government radiation safety limits when tested in the way they are actually used, next to the human body.

“The wireless industry has ‘war-gamed’ science by playing offense as well as defense, actively sponsoring studies that result in published findings supportive of the industry, while aiming to discredit competing research that raises questions about the safety of cellular devices and other wireless technologies,” Project Censored summarized. “When studies have linked wireless radiation to cancer or genetic damage, industry spokespeople have pointed out that the findings are disputed by other researchers.”

This is the exact same strategy used by the tobacco and fossil fuel industries described in the 2010 book, Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues From Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming, by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway.

While some local media have covered the findings of a few selected studies, Project Censored noted, “the norm for corporate media is to report the telecom industry line— that is, that evidence linking Wi-Fi and cell phone radiation to health issues, including cancer and other medical problems, is either inconclusive or disputed… As Hertsgaard and Dowie’s Nation report suggested, corporate coverage of this sort is partly how the telecom industry remains successful in avoiding the consequences of [its] actions.”

Post Bans Using Social Media to Criticize Sponsors

“A new social-media policy at The Washington Post prohibits conduct on social media that ‘adversely affects The Post’s customers, advertisers, subscribers, vendors, suppliers or partners,” Andrew Beaujon reported in The Washingtonian the next month. “In such cases, Post management reserves the right to take disciplinary action ‘up to and including termination of employment.’” Beaujon also cited “A clause that encourages employees to snitch on one another: ‘If you have any reason to believe that an employee may be in violation of The Post’s Social Media Policy… you should contact The Post’s Human Resources Department.’”

At the time, the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, which represents the Post’s employees, was protesting the policy and was seeking removal of the controversial parts in a new labor agreement.

A follow-up report by Whitney Webb for MintPress News highlighted the broader possible censorship effects, as prohibiting social media criticism could spill over into reporting as well.

“Among The Washington Post’s advertisers are corporate giants like GlaxoSmithKline, Bank of America and Koch Industries,” Webb wrote. “With the new policy, social media posts criticizing GlaxoSmithKline’s habit of making false and misleading claims about its products, inflating prices and withholding crucial drug safety information from the government will no longer be made by Post employees.”

Beyond that, Webb suggested it could protect the CIA, which has a $600 million contract with Amazon Web Services. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos purchased the Post four months after that contract was signed.

“Corporate news coverage of The Washington Post’s social media policy has been extremely limited,” Project Censored noted.

Russiagate Propaganda and Censorship

to critically examine fake news-related issues within a “censored story” framework. What Project Censored calls attention to is important: “Corporate media coverage of Russiagate has created a two-headed monster of propaganda and censorship. By saturating news coverage with a sensationalized narrative, Russiagate has superseded other important, newsworthy stories.”

As a frustrated journalist with omnivorous interests, I heartily concur—but what’s involved is too complex to simply be labeled “propaganda.” On the other hand, the censorship of alternative journalistic voices is a classic, well-defined Project Censored story, which suffers from the attempt to fit both together.

In a report for Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting, Robin Andersen examined Russiagate-inspired censorship moves by Twitter, Google and others. A key initial target was Russia Today. “RT’s reporting bears striking similarities to alternative and independent media content, and that is why letting the charges against RT stand unexamined is so dangerous,” Andersen noted.

In fact, the government’s intelligence report on RT included its reporting on the dangers of fracking as part of its suspect activity.

“Yet in the battle against fake news, much of the best, most accurate independent reporting is disappearing from Google searches,” Anderson said. “The World Socialist Web Site [8/2/17] reported that Google’s new search protocol is restricting access to leading independent, left-wing, progressive, anti-war and democratic rights websites.

The estimated declines in traffic generated by Google searches for news sites are striking.” There were declines for AlterNet.org (63 percent), DemocracyNow.org (36 percent), CounterPunch.org (21 percent), ConsortiumNews.com (47 percent), MediaMatters.org (42 percent) and TheIntercept. com (19 percent), among others.

“Many people suffer when lies are reported as facts, but it seems that corporate media are the only ones that profit when they reinforce blind hostility—against not only Russia but also legitimate domestic dissent,” Project Censored noted.

The Next Stage of Civilization The world’s agricultural and degraded soils have the capacity to recover 50–66 percent of the historic carbon loss to the atmosphere, according to a 2004 paper in Science, actually reversing the processes driving global warming. A set of practices known as “regenerative agriculture” could play a major role in accomplishing that, while substantially increasing crop yields as well, according to information compiled and published by Ronnie Cummins, director of the Organic Consumers Association, in May 2017.

“For thousands of years, we grew food by depleting soil carbon and, in the last hundred or so, the carbon in fossil fuel as well,” food and farming writer Michael Pollan wrote.

“But now we know how to grow even more food while at the same time returning carbon and fertility and water to the soil.”

Cummins, who’s also a founding member of Regeneration International, wrote that regenerative agriculture offers a “world-changing paradigm” that can help solve many of today’s environmental and public health problems. As The Guardian explained:

“Regenerative agriculture comprises an array of techniques that rebuild soil and, in the process, sequester carbon. Typically, it uses cover crops and perennials so that bare soil is never exposed, and grazes animals in ways that mimic animals in nature. It also offers ecological benefits far beyond carbon storage: it stops soil erosion, re-mineralizes soil, protects the purity of groundwater and reduces damaging pesticide and fertilizer runoff.”

If you’ve never heard of it before, don’t be surprised.

“Regenerative agriculture has received limited attention in the establishment press, highlighted by only two recent, substantive reports in the New York Times Magazine and Salon,” Project Censored wrote.

An Intrusive Data-Sharing Law On Mar. 21, the 2,232-page omnibus spending bill was released. It passed both chambers and was signed into law in two days. Attached to the spending provisions that made it urgent “must-past” legislation was the completely unrelated Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act of 2018, also known as the CLOUD Act. “The CLOUD Act enables the U.S. government to acquire data across international borders regardless of other nations’ data privacy laws and without the need for warrants,” Project Censored summarized. It also significantly weakens protections against foreign government actions.

“It was never reviewed or marked up by any committee in either the House or the Senate,” the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s David Ruiz wrote. “It never received a hearing… It was robbed of a stand-alone floor vote because congressional leadership decided, behind closed doors, to attach this unvetted, unrelated data bill to the $1.3 trillion government spending bill.” Congressional leadership failed to listen to citizen concerns, Ruiz wrote, with devastating consequences: “Because of this failure, U.S. and foreign police will have new mechanisms to seize data across the globe. Because of this failure, your private emails, your online chats, your Facebook, Google, Flickr photos, your Snapchat videos, your private lives online, your moments shared digitally between only those you trust, will be open to foreign law enforcement without a warrant and with few restrictions on using and sharing your information, privacy and human rights,” concluded Greene Robyn Greene, who reported for Just Security.

“The little corporate news coverage that the CLOUD Act received tended to put a positive spin on it,” Project Censored noted. “[A glowing Washington Post op-ed] made no mention of potential risks to the privacy of citizens’ personal data, [and a CNET report that] highlighted the liberties that the CLOUD Act would provide corporations by simplifying legal issues concerning overseas servers.”

Indigenous Communities Win Legal Rights In March 2017, the government of New Zealand ended a 140-year dispute with an indigenous Maori tribe by enacting a law that officially recognized the Whanganui River as a living entity with rights. The Guardian reported it as “a world first,” although the surrounding Te Urewera National Park had been similarly recognized in a 2014 law, and the U.S. Supreme Court came within one vote of potentially recognizing such a right in the 1972 case Sierra Club v. Morton, expressed in a dissent by Justice William O. Douglas. In addition, the broader idea of “rights of nature” has been adopted in Equador, Bolivia and some American communities, noted Mihnea Tanasescu, writing for The Conversation.

The tribe’s perspective was explained to The Guardian by its lead negotiator, Gerrard Albert.

“We consider the river an ancestor and always have,” Albert said. “We have fought to find an approximation in law so that all others can understand that from our perspective treating the river as a living entity is the correct way to approach it, as in indivisible whole, instead of the traditional model for the last 100 years of treating it from a perspective of ownership and management.”

But that could be just the beginning. “It is a critical precedent for acknowledging the Rights of Nature in legal systems around the world,” Kayla DeVault reported for YES! Magazine. “[If the New Zealand Whanganui River settlement] was able to correct the gap in Western and indigenous paradigms in New Zealand, surely a similar effort to protect the Missouri River could be produced for the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River nations by the American government,” DeVault wrote. The same could be done with a wide range of other environmental justice disputes involving Native American tribes.

“A few corporate media outlets have covered the New Zealand case and subsequent decisions in India,” Project Censored noted. “However, these reports have not provided the depth of coverage found in the independent press or addressed how legal decisions in other countries might provide models for the United States.”

FBI Racially Profiles ‘Black Identity Extremists’ At the same time that white supremacists were preparing for the “Unite the Right” demonstration in Charlottesville, VA, which resulted in the murder of Heather Heyer in August 2017, the FBI’s counterterrorism division produced an intelligence assessment warning of a very different, though actually non-existent threat: “Black Identity Extremists.” The report appeared to be the first time the term had been used to identify a movement, according to Foreign Policy magazine, which broke the story.

“But former government officials and legal experts said no such movement exists, and some expressed concern that the term is part of a politically motivated effort to find an equivalent threat to white supremacists,” Foreign Policy reported.

“The use of terms like ‘black identity extremists’ is part of a long-standing FBI attempt to define a movement where none exists,” said former FBI agent Mike German, who now works for the Brennen Center for Justice. “Basically, it’s black people who scare them.”

“It’s classic Hoover-style labeling with a little bit of maliciousness and euphemism wrapped up together,” said William Maxwell, a Washington University professor working on a book about FBI monitoring of black writers. “The language—black identity extremist—strikes me as weird and really a continuation of the worst of Hoover’s past.”

“There is a long tradition of the FBI targeting black activists, and this is not surprising,” Black Lives Matter activist DeRay McKesson told Foreign Policy.

“The corporate media [has] covered the FBI report on ‘black identity extremists’ in narrow or misleading ways,” Project Censored noted, citing examples from The New York Times, Fox News and NBC News. “Coverage like this both draws focus away from the active white supremacist movement and feeds the hate and fear on which such a movement thrives.” f

The Hungriest Dawg Preston Camp Jr. Turned Gridiron Dreams Into a Music Career

T

here’s just one thing Preston Camp Jr. has loved longer than the Texas-style country music he self-releases on Red Note Records: his favorite college football team. As the son of former UGA wrestler and high-school football coach Preston Camp Sr., the younger Camp wanted nothing more than a chance to play for the Dawgs upon his high-school graduation.

“I got a couple of scholarship offers to smaller schools, including Gordon Military [College], but all I knew was I wanted to be a Bulldog,” Camp says.

Student athletes dead set on wearing red and black on fall Saturdays get a small window to succeed at college football. That was especially true for Camp when he arrived on campus in 1969: Until 1972, freshmen were ineligible to play on the varsity team. A separate all-freshman squad featuring Mac McWhorter, later a position coach at both UGA and Georgia Tech, and Lynn Hunnicutt, later a state-champion head coach for Pepperell High School in Floyd County, offered Camp a chance to prove his value as a safety to then-coach Vince Dooley.

Soon after, Camp was presented with a chance to transfer to Troy State alongside another player, Terry Peeples. “They offered me and Terry a full scholarship to transfer from Georgia,” Camp says. “To me, the most important thing was being part of the Georgia Bulldogs system, more than the opportunity to be able to play on a starting team. Terry took it, but I didn’t.”

Although a hamstring injury kept him off the field, Camp’s loyalty to UGA paid off. Dooley offered him a football manager scholarship for the 1971 season, creating a one-of-a-kind chance to travel with the 11-1 Gator Bowl champions. Camp’s later behind-the-scenes contribution to Georgia football came as a scout team kicker.

In hindsight, Camp says it’s a blessing that he never realized his dream as a starter. Decades later, a doctor informed him of a broken neck suffered way back in high school that could’ve made the SEC grind way too dangerous for the future singer-songwriter. Indeed, after Camp’s time at UGA and a stint in the Alabama National Guard, a hidden talent got his full attention.

“When I was in grammar school, I was writing poetry, and I guess I wrote my first country song when I was in junior high school,” he says. “I was always writing. It was a natural-born gift I had. I kept writing in college and wrote a lot of songs, but I never did anything with them.”

With a guitar he bought for 75 cents off a soldier in search of cigarette money, Camp started playing clubs around Georgia and Alabama. Eventually, his writing talents brought him to Nashville, TN, where he befriended fellow Georgian Jerry Reed and started cutting demos.

Decades of songwriting culminated with Camp’s lateaughts discovery that the European market loved his music.

His songs got airplay there, and journalists paid him high praise. “One of the Italian magazines over there wrote an article about me, and it called me the new Guy Clark of country music,” he says. “To me, that was a huge compliment, because I always admired Guy Clark as a songwriter.”

Growing stateside interest in Americana and traditional country helped Camp get christened an honorary Texan, but his most enthusiastic supporters still reside overseas, where he says there are open invites to play venues in Europe and a festival in Australia. Camp and his cast of

veteran collaborators, including steel guitarist Tommy Dodd—who has played with names like Travis Tritt and Doug Stone—are planning the late-2018 release of a new album, She Calls Me Cowboy.

Like a good songwriter should, Camp writes about what he knows, including his lifelong devotion to Athens.

In 2002, he recorded a CD for Whirlwind Records called Hungry Dogs about his alma mater’s athletic squads. In the tradition of novelty songs about UGA football, the title track gained some momentum during David Greene and David Pollack’s dream season.

“A few years ago, someone told me that the Redcoat Band was playing ‘Hungry Dogs’ before the game, so it’s still alive and kicking,” Camp adds.

On 2016’s Red Texas Sun, Camp told a more tantalizing story about what could have been, had those early days in Athens gone a little different. “My freshman year, my first good friend I met was born and raised in Athens,” he says. “He introduced me to [Athens native] Kim Basinger. She might’ve been 17 years old, and I was 18 by the time I got over there.”

Years later, he says, “I was up late one night writing and had the TV on and muted. This movie came on called People I Know, with Al Pacino and Kim Basinger. I wrote a song called ‘People I Know (Me Rememberin’ Kim Basinger and 1969).’ She probably has no clue that it’s out there.

“It’s funny,” says Camp, “because I called her after he introduced me to ask her out on an official date, and she said, ‘I’d love to go, but I’m leaving to go to New York for a modeling gig.’

Of course, we know what happened after that. I don’t think she ever came back to Athens.” f

“The Irish Went Down to New Orleans” (1981) “The Charlie Spaniels Band” tells the story of the Dawgs’ Sugar Bowl win over Notre Dame in this “Devil Went Down to Georgia” send-up. Little is known about this one, except that it came from the shared pen of Soperton songwriters Gary Ladue and Jerry Weaver.

“Bulldawg Boogie” (1982) This rare picture disc features songs by an artist named Sage accented with samples of Larry Munson’s greatest calls. Although Discogs categorizes it as rap (for whatever reason), the title track sounds more like blue-eyed soul.

“The Bulldawg Song” (2013) Surely there were Dawg-themed tunes between Walker’s time in Athens and the Mark Richt era, but nothing stands out quite like this seriously awesome history lesson from longtime UGA fan Chip Carter. He name-drops many of the greats, from the SEC’s first Heisman winner, Frank Sinkwich, to contemporary legend Knowshon Moreno.

The Good Fight SYLVIA ROSE NOVAK’S MUSICAL CALL TO ACTION

F

ueled by an activist spirit and a desire for change, local singer-songwriter Sylvia Rose Novak’s third album, Someone Else’s War—out Friday, Oct. 6—explores difficult issues and ideas while highlighting Novak’s relatable lyricism and unique folk-rock style.

Originally from Opelika, AL and previously based in Birmingham, Novak moved to Athens in September 2017 and speaks highly of the music and character of the local community.

“This record isn’t the biggest reflection of my life as a whole—it’s pretty political,” Novak says. “I like being in Athens with the release of this album, because I feel like this community is really open-minded and really progressive. I’ve gotten nothing but intensely positive feedback at all of my live shows with these songs.”

From a young age, Novak showed musical talent. Piano and trombone lessons came first. Her dad bought her a bass guitar at age 12, and she fell in love. Music quickly became her passion, and she soon learned many other instruments, including violin, mandolin, banjo and pedal steel guitar.

Country musician Chris Posey brought Novak onstage for her first fiddling performance in 2013, and she credits Posey for inspiring the release of her first album, Chasing Ghosts, the very next year. Shortly after that, Novak joined Birmingham band Five Shot Jack as a vocalist, bassist and songwriter. She has been steadily releasing music since.

Novak produced the new record, which features her on fiddle and vocals, husband Kelen Rylee on guitar and longtime friend Blake Bolton and engineer Lester Nuby III switching instruments throughout. “They’re two very

different players, stylistically,” says Novak. “If one of them sat down behind the drum kit and one of them grabbed the bass and I didn’t like what was happening, I would just say, ‘Change places.’”

The album’s title track was previously released as a single and is Novak’s personal favorite on the record. “I can always listen to that one and kind of ground myself to what I feel and… where I want to be,” Novak says.

Calling it an accidental concept album, Novak says Someone Else’s War reflects the world’s scary, seeming proximity to the brink of destruction.

“We are war-torn, we are interpersonally torn, everybody’s fighting all the time, social media is just a slew of arguments and hatred,” Novak says. “If we don’t do something about our climate, about our natural resources, about our attitudes toward other people—if we don’t just start being kind and conscious of what’s happening around us— we’re doomed, and soon.”

The first three songs on the album come from a poetry trilogy Novak wrote about the political and societal climate surrounding the 2016 election. “It’s a rallying cry—the record can either be taken at face value, or you can listen for something deeper.” Novak says. “There’s nothing insanely pointed unless you want it to be, but I, like a lot of Americans, was really scared in the fall of 2016, [so I] made a record about it.”

Even though the album often focuses on the darker side of human nature, the singer-songwriter emphasizes that most people have good in them, and we aren’t too far gone as a society. “I am perpetually saddened, but also perpetually really amazed by human nature,” Novak says. “It’s like, GRANT BEECHER

when I think we can’t get any more nasty, somebody does something really beautiful.”

Ultimately, Novak hopes her new album will inspire others to examine their place in an increasingly complex and combative world.

“At the end of the day, there are fights that occur within us and around us, and what are you gonna do about it?”

Novak says. “Are you gonna let someone else deal with it, leave it up to chance, or are you gonna be proactive?” f

By Gordon Lamb threatsandpromises@flagpole.com CONSTRUCTION TIME AGAIN: The new album from Lambda Celsius (often stylized as Λ°C ) came out last week, and it’s named Ana Echo and the Beauty of Indifference. The persona in the title is explained as a “LiveJournal-esque avatar” of project creator AC Carter. The album arrives courtesy of Banana Tapes and Carter’s own label, Scorpion Beach.

The creative trajectory of Lambda Celsius over the past 10 months or so has been positively meteoric, as some of the songs on this new collection came out in bibs and bobs.

Where earlier tracks were nearly uniformly dark and minimal—a style I fully embrace—this new collection spreads its arms a little while remaining loosely within that same structure.

Significantly, the vocals and lyrics are well placed up front, and several songs burst with pop sensibility. Specifically, “Beauty of Indifference” and “Simulacra” are the type of catchy tracks that’ll catch the ear of casual listeners before drawing them into Carter’s world of deeply rhythmic, heavily heady music.

Standout tracks from the dark side include the superb “Fashionable Linguistics” (co-written with murk daddy flex) and “PMMDMD.” For my money, at least on the night I’m writing these words, I could loop the EBM groove of “Time to Change History,” with its cin- Lambda Celsius ematic storm sounds and disintegration sound effects, for an hour and not get bored. Elevated Eats THE EXPAT STRUTS ITS STUFF IN FIVE POINTS

NEW KID: It is hard for any restaurant to come in and take over the space of another place that was much beloved.

Some people are going to hate it and be angry at it regardless of what it does, even without experiencing its offerings.

Such is the case for The Expat (1680 S. Lumpkin St., 706521-5041, theexpatathens.com), which moved into and renovated the big old house previously occupied by Two Story Coffee. It was a sign, much like the closing of the Waffle House nearby, that already-elevated property values in Five Points were continuing to inflate, and that’s not an unfair way to view the whole situation.

At the same time, the restaurant, owned and operated by Jerry and Krista Slater (who owned H. Harper Station in Atlanta), brings something good and serious to the area. It’s not flashy, but it’s not stuffy, either. The prices aren’t inexpensive, and the portions aren’t large. You will have to open up your wallet, and food prices in Athens on the whole remain pretty low, making it hard to do that.

That said, there are absolutely reasons to spend the money on chef Savannah Sasser’s menu.

The Expat The charcuterie/fromage board is one of the best—if not the best—in town, and you might as well go for the whole thing, which contains a bit of each of the six options in that area of the menu. The idea of pairing smoked trout with crème fraîche, a bit of caviar and potato chips is a sharp one. The chicken liver pâté is grassy and mineral at the same time, the kind of thing you want to keep in your mouth for a while to keep tasting its twists and turns.

There’s a lovely Sweet Grass Dairy Green Hill cheese that comes with nice pickles, and a blue from Sequatchie, TN that doesn’t overpower your nose but feels earthy and complex. If I had to pick a winner, it’s the Hobo Banjo, a soft cow’s milk cheese that plays around with bitterness, paired with honeycomb and some housemade fennel buttermilk crackers.

Similar crackers come with the pickled shrimp but are thicker and less successful there, and although the dish is good, it’s less transformative of its ingredients. Better among the small plates is the mushroom toast, served on fat hunks of dark bread with a soft cheese and plenty of tarragon. It’s belly-warming stuff.

Entrees are harder to get just right, always, and if you see the vegetarian option listed as “cauliflower risotto, marinated carrot salad, sunflower seeds, pea shoots, tomato

pearls,” you may imagine a plate of different little piles.

Instead, it’s a single dish with all of those ingredients mixed together, and although it is quite fresh, light and well done, the flavor gets a little monotonous by the time you’re done eating. The duck breast, with charred eggplant, peaches and puffed farro, is more varied, with the central protein unctuous and bacon-y, but not greasy, and the crunchy farro and

smoky eggplant lightening it up a bit.

The cocktails, a major point of emphasis, have an approach that’s similar to the chewable parts of the menu: confidently understated, well-schooled in history, opinionated but not mansplain-y. The bartender’s choice is the house old-fashioned, made with Old Forester bourbon, Angostura bitters, a sugar cube, a bit of lemon peel and beautiful ice. It doesn’t make you walk through fire or prove that you can handle a level of bitterness humanity evolved to reject. What it does do is carefully consider the water of melting ice as an important ingredient in a drink.

The Holy Mistake (High Wire botanical gin, Gran Classico bitter, Clement Creole Shrubb, sparkling wine, grapefruit twist) does the same, evolving as the ice melts a bit, and so does the house Bloody Mary. The Burn the Witch (Casamigos reposado tequila, Bozal Ensamble mezcal, Strega, lemon, orgeat) is a different animal (no ice), but it’s one worth investigating.

The format of brunch involves a sort of prix-fixe option that is only available if everyone at your table gets it, with a shared first course that includes lovely gougères (cheese puffs) that disappear much too fast, Comerian pastries and something else (a savory bread pudding, a soufflé).

The baked eggs are tiny but stellar, with plenty of cream, and the savory crêpe emphasizes nice cheese.

Dessert is a bit of a relative weak point. It’s fine, but we want better than fine.

The cake of layered crêpes is on the bland side, and the chocolate bouchon with whipped cream and toffee crumble just isn’t very exciting. The buttermilk panna cotta is better, with a cool, clean flavor and a well-executed texture.

The full cocktail menu is available at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, even though the brunch menu only highlights a few options, and the restaurant has started doing a lunch for home football games. There’s a bar upstairs (with snacks) and a bar downstairs, and there are nonalcoholic and light-alcohol cocktails, as well as fully boozy stuff. The Expat is open for dinner every night and Sunday brunch. It takes reservations through its website. f

Luck Be a Bulldog GEORGIA CAN’T KEEP RELYING ON GOOD FORTUNE TO WIN

Those aren’t the first swings in luck Georgia has seen. The Dawgs got lucky on Deandre Baker’s would-be pick-six against South Carolina, when he dropped the ball before crossing the goal line. Had Jawaun Taylor not been in a position to scoop that up, maybe Georgia isn’t able to establish that 14-0 lead. Maybe the Gamecocks score first and change the dynamic of the game.

Ditto Jeremiah Holloman’s goal-line drop against Missouri. That came with Georgia up by 13 points and could have made the final two quarters a lot more tense.

The theme of Georgia’s season so far has been the Bulldogs trying—and often failing—to win in a fashion commensurate with their new station near the top of the college football pecking order. Kirby Smart was brought to Athens to oversee the Alabamafication of the program, and based on the muted reactions of players, coaches and fans to a 26-point win over Tennessee, I’d say that process is complete. In this new age of Georgia football, it’s not only about winning but also how you win.

Georgia beat Tennessee 38-12 Saturday in Athens, and just like the Missouri game a week ago, no one was that happy about it.

weakest link in the SEC East, and Georgia being 31-point favorites, fans were hoping for a better performance. As in most games this season, Georgia suffered from undisciplined play and boneheaded penalties. It was buoyed by a solid helping of luck.

If not for a few lucky bounces, there’s a good chance the 26-point margin of victory would’ve been a lot tighter. I wouldn’t go so far as to say luck won the game for the Dawgs, but it certainly helped. The Vols already knew they were in for an uphill battle, and as soon as it became clear that luck was a Bulldog on Saturday night, they pretty much resigned themselves to defeat.

The moment it was clear that everything was going to go Georgia’s way Saturday came on the Bulldogs’ first drive of the game, midway through the first quarter.

Jake Fromm was strip-sacked on 3rd-and-9 in Tennessee territory, nearly upending the opening drive. But before any Vol could jump on the loose ball, tight end Isaac Nauta snatched it off the ground and dashed 31 yards for a touchdown.

The other bit of luck came via Rodrigo Blankenship, who remained perfect on extra points despite freshman punter Jake Camarda bobbling a hold, leading Blankenship to run past the ball. Instead of panicking and trying to scramble in

(As much whining as there’s been about this game/season from me and others, you don’t beat any SEC East team, even the worst one, by 26 without being pretty good.) It just wasn’t good enough to meet the standard set by Smart. The Dawgs incurred six penalties, one off the season-high, and fumbled four times, although none were recovered by the Vols.

Georgia has to play better, because there will come a day when the luck runs out.

Luck is a zero-sum game. Tennessee was unlucky as much as Georgia was lucky. We may want to think the stars are aligning for the Dawgs, but it was just as likely a bit of cosmic punishment handed down to the Vols for being oh so very Tennessee.

Georgia can’t rely on fortune, especially in games that aren’t expected to be blowouts. This was the warm-up phase of the season. The Dawgs were more talented than every team they’ve faced so far. They’ve got one more week of that when Vanderbilt comes to Athens this Saturday. Then begins the meat of the schedule with a trip to Baton Rouge to face LSU, a team every bit as talented as Georgia. It’ll be great news if Georgia gets lucky in Death Valley. It’ll be better news if they’re just good. f

The Confederacy’s Long Shadow PLUS, NEWS FROM THE LOCAL ART WORLD

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com IN THE SHADOW OF DIXIE: All across the South, Confederate monuments serve, to many Americans, as painful reminders of slavery and its legacy. In response, Becci Davis, an interdisciplinary artist and activist currently living in Rhode Island, performed “In the Shadow of Dixie,” a series of interventions at monuments across the state of Georgia in Athens, Augusta, Louisville, Canton, Kennesaw, Decatur, Stone Mountain and Columbus. While in town, she filmed herself writing postcards to local, state and federal politicians— shifting position every so often to remain in the monument’s shadow—and urged each of them to make a public statement on whether or not they support the monument’s removal.

“The existence of these monuments throws into sharp relief the odious lack of official recognition honoring the people whose blood, sweat and toil built our country’s economy and global influence,” says Davis. For the past few years, she has used her artwork as a place for processing research into her own ancestry—an experience that has led to serious reflection on how slavery has directly and indirectly altered the experiences of her and her family members.

Though Davis remained at the Athens monument for nearly seven hours, she was only approached by two people, both of whom asked if she was protesting the monument and seemed supportive of her efforts. To date, she has not yet received any responses from the 23 government officials she has attempted to contact.

“During the research process of this project, it became clear that these and other symbols of white supremacy are in the firm grasp of legislators, not random racists or anonymous Klansmen in sheets,” says Davis, who points out that Georgia monuments are protected by state law. “It is my hope that this project does two things.

One is to bring awareness to the history of these monuments and their connection to Jim Crow-era attempts to intimidate black communities and reframe the Confederacy’s reason for secession… The other is to empower citizens to build communities that are inclusive by holding lawmakers accountable for their actions and decisions.”

A multimedia installation incorporating her research and reflections on “In the Shadow of Dixie” is currently on view at the University of Rhode Island’s Main Gallery, and her experiences can be followed at shadowofdixie.wordpress.com.

TRIO GALLERY: Back in June, Pixel & Ink Studio announced the switch from retail hours to an appointment-only system that would allow for more project-based work and a busy schedule of workshops. Along with a few further tweaks to services, the shop also recently decided to close Trio Contemporary Art Gallery, located upstairs.

The gallery’s artistic director, Tatiana Veneruso, has been actively working with Pixel & Ink owners Carolyn Crist and Laulea Taylor since the shop’s relocation from the Chase Park warehouses to the former Secret Squirrel building on West Broad Street.

Over the course of a year, the gallery hosted a total of nine well-organized and notably inclusive exhibitions that ranged from politically charged works in “Nasty Women Athens” to murals for “In These Streets” and tributes to feline friends in “CatFest.”

Neighboring business Vic’s Vintage will take over the second-floor space to use as a display and selling room. Veneruso, no doubt, will continue elevating arts within the community through her position with the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission.

Sweet Melodies PLUS, A ROUTINE HORROR FLICK AND AN ANIMATED MUSICAL

How most considering neither of them were present crap gets relegated there and a movie like

this escapes for a theatrical release escapes me. Still, it is October, and no time of year is more appropriately seasonal for watching low-rent horror in a movie theater, preferably with a full house.

You are unlikely to find too many crowded theaters in which to watch Hell Fest, unless you bring your own crowd. If you and your friends decide to take a chance on it, you will be horrifically surprised to find a competent throwback to the halcyon days when ’80s slashers sliced and diced teens on a seemingly weekly basis. Hell Fest’s setting may be its only original offering; horror mazes like Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios are all the rage.

A group of potential victims visits the traveling Hell Fest and runs afoul of a masked killer who has done this before. Thanks to Blaze above-average dialogue delivered by a more competent crew than usual, Hell Fest delivers no-chills kills with more energy than the detritus clogging many an October Netflix queue. The movie strings enough together between kills to remain slightly interesting. Though MTV’s “Scream” alum Bex Taylor-Klaus is the only familiar victim, the BFFs played by Amy Forsyth and Reign Edwards stay on the plus column of the how-much-do-I-want-themto-die equation. Most modern slashers forget how much more impactful the deaths can be when the characters do not actually deserve a knife to the gut.

Hell Fest could have benefited from a few more creative kills; any self-respecting slasher knows he is scored as much for inventive use of his surroundings as he is for brutality. Considering Hell Fest’s killer could not even bring his own deadly implement, you would think he would be more inclined to wing his deadliness. Sure, Hell Fest is a routine collection of scareless kills, but jettisoning any sort of killer backstory effectively streamlines the sinister revelry.

Music by Bear McCreary makes a nice bonus for showing up.

SMALLFOOT (PG) Smallfoot is a cute, if not that original, animated musical about a secret society of yetis who resemble a mashup of the Grinch and Rudolph’s Abominable Snowmonster and live on a mountain peak above the clouds. Channing Tatum voices Migo, a young yeti preparing to take over his dad’s job of banging the gong that wakens the great snail in the sky.

However, when Migo meets a legendary smallfoot—i.e., human—he finds himself banned for speaking out against the stones that rule yeti society.

The family film boasts charming voicework from Tatum, Zendaya, the Jedi-like Common, Danny DeVito, an unrecognizable LeBron James and even James Corden, and a visually creative new world. However, those inclined to see attacks on Christianity in Starbucks’ cup choices will probably grow irate at Smallfoot’s message to question those in authority. Yet the film takes less umbrage with religion, which goes unmentioned, than with accepting authoritative commands with no critical thought.

Why would anyone seek to be angered by writer-director Karey Kirkpatrick’s catchy, if unmemorable, songs and Tatum’s contagious collegiality? Besides, your kid will have forgotten about it by the next day. f

Sunwatchers followed their roaring second full-length, February’s II, with Basement Apes Vol. 1, a kinetic collection of live recordings and rare tracks, in May. Atlanta artists Diane Solomon Kempler and Katherine Mitchell both explore the relationship between nature and mankind through their artwork.

Kempler’s ceramic forms in “Garden of Biotanical Delights” are inspired by the mystery of the microscopic world, color palette of visible nature and eccentricity of Bosch’s famous painting. Mitchell’s mixed-media paintings in “Hearing the Trees” emphasize minimalism and geometric forms for a meditative and calming effect. Both exhibitions can be visited until Dec. 7.

My Pal Stinks ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Bonita, My friend is a lovely person and functioning adult, but they stink horribly. I don’t know if they simply don’t bathe often enough or have some sort of medical condition. This person is at least somewhat aware they cast a foul scent over the room and will acknowledge it casually: “Hi! I smell so bad right now!”

Hanging out together can be tough.

Confined spaces are brutal. I don’t even know what kind of advice I seek. Being stinky isn’t cool to me, but I don’t know if I have the nerve to tell them how bad it is.

Do I have my nose in the air over something I shouldn’t?

Stunk Rock Girl When I lived on the East Coast, I had a roommate who only brushed her teeth about once a week. I would often drive us to work together, and she would fill my car with a scent so wretched I would gag. So, I began rolling down her window during the drive. Sometimes it would be raining or even snowing, and she’d inch her window up, and I’d roll it right back down.

One day, she finally got frustrated and asked why I was freezing her out every morning. I told her the truth, and she didn’t speak to me for the rest of the ride to work, but she started brushing her teeth whenever we would carpool. I didn’t care if she brushed her teeth at all, but she finally realized that she had no right to gross me out of my own vehicle when I was the one doing her a favor.

I don’t know that I would advise you to say anything, but you don’t have to choke while trying to hang out with your buddy. Maybe just stop hanging out in confined spaces with them. When the room gets too funky, move the conversation out to the porch. If you’re in a car with them, roll down the window, no matter the weather. Eventually, they will notice that one of their besties refuses to breathe their air, and hopefully, they’ll take that seriously.

Hey Bonita, About the letter from “Is my roommate trying to sabotage my relationship?” [Sept. 5]: A person who keeps a bottle of shampoo in the bathroom is not a “guest.” They live there.

A person who lives in a place where they have no financial stake (deposit), make no regular financial contribution (rent, water, power bill, cable, internet) and have made no formal commitment to the property owner or the residents may not be as respectful and honest

as a person who has discussed house rules, writes a rent check and has signed a lease.

Unfortunately, people don’t value “free” as much as they value something they have paid and planned for.

To let someone live in your home just because you like them is risky behavior. An individual has the right to take that risk for themselves. Risk is sexy. I get it. I’ve enjoyed some risky behavior myself, and I regret only what caused harm to others. But no one has a right to take risks for other people—or with other people’s homes or property—without those people’s consent.

Bonita, I never miss your column—except when it’s not there, and then I really miss it.

I’ll be honored if Flagpole prints my letter, and if you will share your perspective on my perspective.

A Loyal Reader Y’ALL. I want you to know that the letter above was handwritten and mailed to the Flagpole offices. Honestly? I’m touched! I’m blushing! Who cares if we disagree? That is SO SWEET OF YOU. And perhaps we don’t actually disagree on this, because I’m also no proponent of a roomie’s boo becoming a de facto roommate. Anyone who is regularly using a house’s utilities and facilities should be paying rent, and in

hindsight, that shampoo suggestion was definitely not one of my best. The person who wrote in was describing a situation that felt more like shade than a legitimate household concern, and I think she had good reason to doubt her roommate’s sincerity.

It’s important to note that the information I receive is always one-sided, but it’s what I have to go on when I give advice.

Who knows what’s actually going on in that house? A candid conversation is in order, if you ask me. The writer should ask straight-up if her roommate is worried about the water bill or her own ego. f Need advice? Fair and Balanced A VERY SIMPLE SOLUTION TO GERRYMANDERED CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS

By Pete McCommons editor@flagpole.com Listen, folks. I’ve been writing in Flagpole for a long time now, and, not to be immodest, I have from time to time come up with solutions to current problems that have been both breathtaking and ignored.

Here’s a case in point. I wrote this column on redistricting in August 1991, back when the Democrats still controlled state government and were busily redistricting it under Gov. Zell Miller. Zell was determined to squeeze the Republicans into as few districts as possible, just as they have done to the Democrats ever since they got the upper hand.

Here, before we all forget about them until the next election, I re-offer this very simple method of designing fair and balanced congressional districts. I think they still make sense during a time when the internet is more important than the country store for sharing opinions. Of course, if I had written it recently, the column would be less, uh, sophomoric.

Our state legislature has drawn congressional districts for the 21st Century as if the mule and the plow are still the cutting edge of technology.

They have struggled to run lines around enough people to create an AfricanAmerican district. They have detoured down country roads to gerrymander our only Republican congressman. They have created districts a day’s drive from one end to the other.

All this energy and effort to define areas encompassing enough people to support a congressman.

Do you really care whether you live in the 10th District or the 4th, as long as you live in Athens?

Do you even know who your congressman is? Have you ever seen one?

Have you ever written your congressman? What did you get in return, a form letter?

Do you care whether Bogart is in your district?

Why don’t we quit playing these meaningless and expensive districting games?

A simple change in the law could let your Social Security card determine your congressional district. Then it wouldn’t matter where you or your congressman live.

Take the Social Security numbers of everybody 18 and older; sort them into 11 districts [sic]. African Americans can all be in the same districts. So can Republicans.

Send a list—with names, addresses and telephone numbers—to each congressman and say, “Here’s your district.”

Make the lists available to candidates who want to run for Congress.

Everybody 18 and above with a Social Security number is automatically eligible to vote.

But wait a minute. How are congressmen going to campaign?

Same way they do now—by cranking out all that political literature they can mail free of charge. It doesn’t cost a bit more to Alma than it does to Athens.

Let all the congressmen and all the candidates get on the public TV network like Zell did. Maybe they could help out when it’s fundraising time. We could see them in operation and get a good test of their persuasiveness.

Chaos, you say? Members of R.E.M. in different congressional districts? Husbands, wives, neighbors?

So what? If anything, the arrangement would focus us on the issues important to everybody—clean water and air, sidewalk cafés—and lessen the divisive issues like tobacco subsidies vs. mountain protection.

But people would lose their sense of identity if their congressional districts weren’t defined geographically? No. Look at the opportunities.

Congressmen could send out little lapel pins subtly identifying the wearer as 4th District or 1st.

“What’s your district?” could replace “What’s your sign?” at the Globe.

The state could dent the deficit by selling prestige auto tags: “Peach State—Honk if you love the 6th.”

We could have things in common with people all over Georgia. Right now, if you drive down to Nahunta, everybody you meet is in the 1st District.

It’s boring.

Under the new plan, you can find members of your district wherever you go, from Rabun Gap to Tybee Light.

Even in Atlanta, and that’s another point. As the state’s population grows and centers increasingly around Atlanta, the metro area gets the new districts. Voting power concentrates there.

Under the new plan, by random sort, every district will have a strong dose of Atlanta, balanced by the rest of the state.

I could go on—political rallies in the stadium attended by members from all over the state; district colors, mascots, vans with flags—but the advantages are obvious.

Meanwhile, the legislature has plowed some new lines around the voters. Many sages predict they won’t hold water when challenged in court, and they’ll have to re-district all over again in January.

How simple it could be.
