No matter where they are, the case against bike lanes is usually the same: Taking away a car lane makes traffic worse. Most people drive, and not everyone has the luxury of being able to bike. Cyclists don’t pay taxes like drivers do. And few people bike there, so bike lanes are unnecessary. Among transportation experts, this is known as “bikelash.”

One Snapfinger Drive resident made all of those points about the temporary separated two-way bike path on Barnett Shoals Road at the Athens-Clarke County Commission’s Sept. 18 agenda-setting meeting. “You’ve just made it a nightmare,” John Johnson told commissioners.

The counter-argument is: The only way to reduce congestion is to get cars off the road by providing alternatives to driving.

Bikes are light and don’t damage the road the way cars do, and cyclists do pay sales taxes that go toward maintenance. Not everyone has the luxury of driving, either.

And if few people are biking, it’s usually because they feel unsafe.

But few people are making those arguments as of this writing, although BikeAthens did post a defense of the path

“This is an item that I have received the most comment on since I’ve been a commissioner for almost four years,” said Sharyn Dickerson, who doesn’t represent that stretch of Barnett Shoals, but represents constituents who drive through it from farther out on the Eastside. “I’ve received 15 emails and two phone calls in five days, and all of them were against the project.

I say that just to let everybody know that it’s not being well received.” She called for traffic and corridor studies before moving forward.

At the same meeting, commissioners discussed Athens in Motion, the new 20-year update of the county’s bike and pedestrian master plan, which contains a prioritized menu of over 100 sidewalk and bike projects they can pick and choose from in the coming decades as opportunities arise and resources become available. While many Athens residents advocate for complete streets that don’t prioritize cars over other users, after the recent backlash against bike lanes on Chase Street and Boulevard—in perhaps the bike-happiest part of town—it begs the question once again, is Athens really that progressive when the rubber meets the road?

Its importance as a part of the Eastside’s growing bike network was underscored last week when ACC Leisure Services announced that another stretch of the North Oconee River Greenway is now open, running from Carriage Lane off Barnett Shoals to the University of Georgia’s new park-and-ride lot at College Station and the Loop. Das Boot? Nein!

Commissioners are also likely to ban booting on private property next month after receiving complaints that lot owners are hiring people to lie in wait and immobilize drivers’ wheels for infractions like going into a business that isn’t associated with the lot, then charge a fee to remove the boots.

Commissioner Andy Herod, who chairs the Government Operations Committee, said he first heard such complaints after last year’s Independence Day fireworks show downtown. “There were some out-oftown companies that came all the way from Atlanta to boot several people,” Herod said.

“There was a sense that there was some predatory-type activity taking place.”

The GOC recommended the booting ban in response. Commissioner Jared Bailey asked about the difference between booting and towing. Herod responded that towing cars is more involved and less likely to be abused. “It [booting] seems to be more about revenue generation than it is about enforcing access to property,” he said.

The Athens Downtown Development Authority and police, however, will still boot cars if the owner has six unpaid parking tickets or owes more than $200 in fines.

Commissioner Melissa Link drew a distinction between government booting and booting by private property owners.

“You can go to court and defend yourself,” Link said. “There’s an extended

departments have submitted their own lists of desired projects—71 altogether, costing some $500 million combined. The final project list will be decided by ACC commissioners and approved or rejected by voters.

Citizens proposing large or small projects must detail the projects, estimate costs and present them to the citizens committee.

As Flagpole previously reported, with an expensive new jail already built, commissioners now have few “must-have” projects this time around and can get on with the “highly wanted” or “nice to have” projects that everybody loves. One of those could be a new multi-story county office building (location undetermined) to combine departmental offices that are now split into multiple buildings, and perhaps sell off several smaller county-owned buildings.

The new building would require 5–7 acres, including parking or an adjacent parking deck.

A new study of the space needs of ACC departments suggests selling off the county’s Dougherty Street building, the Costa and Simon Michael buildings near City Hall, the Satula Avenue building, the Prince Avenue IT building and/or the downtown water business office, a former bank that the county spent more than $2 million renovating just a few years ago. Several relocated county departments, courts and judicial offices could occupy the new, larger building, the study suggests, and that could allow other departments to fill the existing courthouse and “convert existing courtrooms into large meeting spaces.”

Cost estimates range from $22 million–$91 million, depending on size. Alternatively, separate and cheaper SPLOST proposals would renovate portions of the courthouse,

adding more courtrooms and jury rooms and improving courthouse security.

Many of the departmental project proposals are mundane: street repaving, buses and bus stop improvements, 911 phone equipment, stormwater improvements, body cameras and stun guns for sheriff’s deputies, and assigned vehicles for police.

Transportation and Public Works requests include traffic calming and supplementary bike and pedestrian funding, plus a $6 million “Vision Zero” program to reduce traffic fatalities. “Athens-Clarke County is consistently one of the top five worst counties in the state for crash and injury rates [per vehicle miles traveled],” the project description says. “An average of 14–15 people are killed each year in traffic crashes; pedestrians and bicyclists typically comprise 30 percent of fatal and serious injury crash victims.” Strategies would include data studies, education, enforcement and infrastructure improvements.

Replacing ACC’s aging recycling processing center would cost $12 million, replacing the Whit Davis Road fire station $5 million, airport grant matches $5 million and animal shelter improvements $500,000.

A replacement building for jail inmate workers is $20 million, land acquisition for economic development $20 million, a new building with leasable workspace to develop “research institutes, incubators, accelerators, innovation centers, co-working spaces, start-up spaces and more” $28 million. $5 million would buy a new dog park and playground at Memorial Park, plus renovation of the lake and stormwater improvements. $12 million at Bishop Park would replace the pool and playground and renovate fields, courts and restrooms. $4 million is requested for improvements to Cook’s Trail. Improved training facilities for law enforcement officers would include a vehicle training surface—emergency vehicle maneuvers are presently taught in Forsyth County—and a “360-degree” use-of-force simulator. A $28 million water reuse system could provide non-potable water to industry for cooling and irrigation, thus saving on more highly treated drinking water.

None of these projects are assured, and most of those submitted cannot be funded within the budget. Proposals from citizens will further lengthen the list that must be vetted either by cutting out projects or reducing their cost, ending with a list intended both to be substantive and to gain voter approval. Classic Center Pitches Arena In another meeting, Classic Center Executive Director Paul Cramer made a detailed presentation to commissioners on his proposal for a $75 million, 7,000-capacity arena on county-owned land just north of the Multimodal Center.

The arena, according to an economic impact study, would generate $33 million for the local economy, creating 600 jobs with an average salary of $40,000. It would also support the 600 new hotel rooms in the city; those four new hotels are paying (or will pay) a combined $1.7 million in taxes. Hospitality and tourism is “the one industry that continues to grow, and you can’t export it,” Cramer said.

Many of those jobs, Cramer emphasized, would go to people with little education or career prospects. Because of the Classic Center’s partnerships with the Athens Community Career Academy, Athens Tech

and Piedmont College, workers who start at the bottom have a clear pathway to higher education and management positions.

Small businesses—local restaurants, electricians, carpenters and others—would benefit as well, he said.

No matter what the numbers say, though, the arena could be a tough sell to voters. A significant portion of residents have always been wary of investing in the Classic Center since its inception. The citizens advisory committee left the Grand Hall expansion to accommodate larger conventions off the initial list of projects in 2010, only for the commission to restore a scaled-back version that still drew criticism for walling off the “river district” from downtown.

The river district, at that time, could have been a government-subsidized tech and entertainment district, but Mayor Nancy Denson nixed it in favor of student apartment buildings. Development has died down in recent years, but Cramer said it could spur further growth near the river.

And his proposal does bear a passing resemblance to Blue Heron, as it was called—the arena would replace an amphitheater proposed in the downtown master plan, and it incorporates the Georgia Music Hall of Fame collection, in storage at UGA since the Macon museum closed.

There may no longer be a need for a publicly funded amphitheater at that location, since two privately owned amphitheaters are in the works off Commerce Road and Newton Bridge Road. Cramer said the arena would not compete with them, because amphitheaters tend to focus on music and only host 20–30 events per year. According to the consultants’ study, the arena would be busy 300 days out of the year, hosting about 120 events, ranging from concerts to youth sports tournaments to religious gatherings.

“I know we can hit those numbers,” Cramer said. “I’m not guessing. I’m not wondering.”

Cramer has a strong track record: He was right about the Grand Hall, from a financial perspective, and about the decision to buy removable bleachers, a scoreboard and an ice-making machine. The Ice Dawgs, UGA’s

Classic Center board members said they were skeptical of the arena at first, but are now convinced. “We weren’t sure about this,” retired hotel executive Mike Waldrip said. “It’s been a year. Now, we’re absolute proponents of it.”

The project could take up over a third of what a six-year SPLOST extension would raise, though, making it a big commitment.

“I think this is an intriguing possibility,” Herod said, but “$75 million is a lot of money.” [BA]

A Bird By Any Other Name Defining a Bird scooter under the law is harder than you’d think, but ACC attorneys now have an answer: They’re mopeds. The designation provides some clarity on what state and local laws regulate the electric scooters—they’re illegal on the sidewalk, but legal to ride in the street or in a bike lane, and riders must wear a helmet.

After meeting with Bird representatives recently, ACC officials concluded that the company is not interested in helping communities deal with problems like scooters blocking sidewalks or thrown into bushes, for example by using geocaching technology to shut them down when they enter a forbidden area, or continuing to run the meter, so to speak, if they’re left in an inappropriate location. “They’re good at making things our problem, is what I got out of the conversation,” ACC Assistant Manager Robert Hiss said.

The next step, ACC Attorney Bill Berryman suggested to the commission’s Legislative Review Committee last week, could be to require Bird—or any other similar company that enters the market—to register its scooters, which he said would facilitate seizing them for legal infractions.

Meanwhile, Leisure Services Director Kent Kilpatrick said his department is considering revising a ban on motorized vehicles on the greenway to allow e-scooters and e-bikes. The committee will revisit the issue in November, after tackling property tax reform next month. [BA] f

decided to investigate the level of online security protecting Georgia’s system. He was astonished that he was easily able, without technically hacking the site, to pull more than 15 gigabytes of data from the website, including voter registration information, and instructions and passwords for county election officials.

Even when presented with evidence of these security failures, Kemp’s office refused to conduct a study of the database to look for signs of intrusion. Months after his initial discovery and report to the Secretary of State’s office, Lamb was stunned and angered when he discovered that the system remained utterly unprotected.

“Brian Kemp’s lack of action is egregious, and now a federal judge concurs with this opinion that we have missed opportunity after opportunity to rectify serious concerns with our electoral process,” said state Rep. Jonathan Wallace (D-Watkinsville), a software developer who’s taken an interest in election security issues. “Now, after years of mounting criticism, these problems are going to be present in yet another election. It’s the responsibility of the secretary of state and his staff to rectify these problems and work with our county election boards to provide 100 percent confidence that our vote is counted the way it is cast.”

For that reason, Wallace has endorsed fellow Democrat John Barrow, a former congressman from Athens, for secretary of state, but Republican nominee Brad Raffensperger also favors switching to paper ballots.

Kemp’s office has also been criticized for its adoption of “Exact Match” voting analysis. In the past, this practice has rejected voter registration forms from individuals whose information does not precisely match their driver’s license or Social Security information, disproportionately affecting women and minorities. He has also purged hundreds of thousands of “inactive” voters from the rolls—a normal practice to clear out people who may have died or moved away, but one that has gotten more attention than usual this year.

Little Attention Media coverage of Georgia’s election woes has appeared in out-of-state newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, The Atlantic and Politico. “Democracy at Risk” was the title of Paul Krugman’s essay on the machines for the Times.

Marks, of the Coalition for Good Governance, the group that sued the state, was critical of the reporting in Georgia.

“The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has been telling the people of Georgia for the past 15 years that the system is safe, lulling [them] into a false sense of security,” she said, although that was before the AJC published an in-depth article on the issue Sept. 21.

Even the National Academies of Science weighed in, issuing a 180-page report that maintains that the state should make every effort to change to paper ballots.

One scrappy band of voting-rights activists in Morgan County, due south of Athens, formally protested the use of DREs to their county’s board of elections, prompting the board to vote on the possibility of adopting paper ballots for the November election. While that group voted no, activists say they will go next to the county commission and urge it to adopt paper ballots for the upcoming race.

When the Secretary of State’s office heard about the effort, it said that the county would be punished if it adopted paper ballots, according to the activists.

In Athens, Director of Elections Charlotte Sosebee told Flagpole that she has received only one inquiry about switching to paper ballots. However, any voter who is worried about the security of DREs can request a mail-in absentee ballot by filling out a form at sos.ga.gov or picking one up at the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections office. f

UGA held a town hall meeting on Aug. 23 to talk out concerns about the new health-care premiums.

Misty’s Midterm TWO LIT PROFS GRADE JOSH TILLMAN’S LYRICS

Father John Misty, Josh Tillman has released four albums of labyrinthine folk-pop focused largely on sex, drugs and the American male ego (though the latest, this year’s God’s Favorite Customer, is an uncharacteristically crystalline reflection on art, love and fame). While many critics praise Tillman’s lyricism as poignant and perceptive, others dismiss it as arrogant and indulgent. Ahead of Tillman’s two-night stand at the Georgia Theatre—a venue that sits blocks away from one of America’s foremost public universities—we tasked two literature professors with “grading” a couple of the troubadour’s tunes based on their lyrics alone. One is an admitted Misty stan, the other still on the fence. Check out the profs’ handwritten analysis below. f

Saturday, Sept. 29, the 34th annual North Georgia Folk Festival will be held at Sandy Creek Park.

The event, a longtime Athens favorite, will showcase traditional folk music and crafts in a casual, family-friendly environment.

Co-sponsored by the Athens Folk Music and Dance Society and the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department, 16 musical acts will perform on two stages, joining more than 20 artists and vendors participating in this one-day event. “We have a lot of festivals in this town, but there’s nothing that focuses on folk music or traditional folk styles, and that’s what

this one is supposed to be about,” says Tommy Jordan, the festival’s organizer for the past 11 years.

Approximately 75 volunteers will help out at Saturday’s event, motivated by a desire to keep traditional art and folk music alive. “It’s part of what we need to do as practitioners, is we need to pass it onto the next generation, and on and on, so it can stay around,” Jordan says.

This year, the main Folk Fest stage will feature Rebecca Sunshine Band, The Moonshine, Joe Willey and The Movin’ Men, Kyshona Armstrong, The Darnell Boys and others. The amphitheater-like second stage, dubbed the Fire Circle Showcase, will feature Cortez Garza, Claire Campbell, Jim White, Amanda Kapousouz and more.

Campbell, of beloved local folk group Hope for Agoldensummer, also helped organize and plan the festival as a board member. “My music that I’ll be playing at the folk festival will be mostly weird, acoustic and pretty,” she says. Campbell says she will be pulling from her original catalog and may invite friends to perform with her. “We tried hard to book a lot of acts that are bluegrass-heavy or traditional-folk-heavy, [but] what I will bring to the table will be different,” says Campbell. “My music doesn’t sound like traditional folk—it has a lot of soul and R&B influences.”

Former Athenian and current Nashville resident Armstrong will hit the main stage with “a little soul, a little empathy and a little bit of activism,” she says. This is the

first time Armstrong has performed at the North Georgia Folk Festival, and she says she will play a solo set of mostly new music from her album that releases next February.

“I like to think of my music as music for the people, about the people,” Armstrong says. “My whole purpose, musically, is to be a voice for those that are quiet or silent or that have felt forgotten.” Armstrong adds that she hopes her music will encourage listeners to get out and be more active in their community.

While living in Athens, Armstrong hosted open-mic nights at Hendershot’s Coffee Bar that helped fuel a singer-song-

writer scene that is now thriving. “I’m excited to… see what the scene looks like now, what artists are there now and what sounds and messages are coming out of Athens,” Armstrong says.

Art vendors will present traditional crafts personally made by them. “Their ideas are not coming from the internet— they’re coming from their heart and their imagination,” says Jordan. Vendors include Appaloosa Designs Jewelry, Vanda Guthrie, Outsider Art and Folk Pottery, Restored Harmony Folk Guitars, Mary Wooten and many more.

With organizers expecting anywhere from 750–1,400 attendees—a number based on past years—Jordan says there will be something for everyone. Food vendors will sell everything from barbecue to boiled peanuts to world cuisine. A Parent Participation Zone will feature kids’ activities, like arts and crafts, a playground and face painting. A jam tent will be set up near the stages for people to bring their own instruments and play. “Expect [to find] a bunch of people who are your friends, or who will be your friends,” Jordan says. f

Cloudy Retro Gets Jumpin’ PLUS, MORE MUSIC NEWS AND GOSSIP

By Gordon Lamb threatsandpromises@flagpole.com NO PARKING ON THE DANCE FLOOR: UGA student and producer Mansoor Syed, aka Cloudy Retro, released a full-length record back in July named Eleven Thirteen Sixteen, and it’s a real treat of a listen. The Middle Eastern instrumentation is unmistakable, but it’s difficult to tell if any of this is played live or sampled. Honestly, it doesn’t matter—the beats are tight. The tunes fluctuate between buoyant jumpiness (“Yeah Habeeb Tea,” “Windy Love”) and darkly rendered mood swings (“Rose Gold”). All 16 tracks are worth the time it takes to spin them, but my favorite by far is

AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME: Even though it won’t be out for a couple of weeks, I still want to tell you about the new Kites With Lights record, Invisible to Us. Frankly, it’s just been too damn long since there was new music from this project, which is the brainchild and project of Jonah Cordy.

Every time Cordy puts out something new, I feel compelled to reintroduce him because, invariably, there’s a whole new generation of readers who slipped into town while he was woodshedding. So, again for the first time, Kites With Lights is a supremely sublime synth-pop project that is influenced by many (Roxy Music, New Order, et al.) but indebted to none. If you’re curious to know how long a wait it’s been for this record, consider that one of the two songs currently available (“Feeling Better”) was released as an album teaser back in the summer of 2016. Look a full review when this drops, but for now, take a taste at kiteswithlights.bandcamp.com.

REMATCH OF THE QUARTER CENTURY: On Thursday, Sept. 27, the UGA Wind Ensemble and UGA Symphony Orchestra will share the stage for only the second time in 25 years. Iconic Imagery DORIS ULMANN’S PHOTOGRAPHS AT THE GEORGIA MUSEUM

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com Whether photographing the mountains of Appalachia, the lowlands of coastal Georgia or the cityscape of New York, photographer Doris Ulmann maintained an ethnographer’s keen eye while humanizing members of marginalized groups. Currently on view at the Georgia Museum of Art through Nov. 18, “Vernacular Modernism: The Photography of Doris Ulmann” is the first complete retrospective of works by the artist. Organized by curator of American art Sarah Kate Gillespie, the exhibition consists of approximately 100 of Ulmann’s photographs alongside related books, craft items and works of art by a few of her contemporaries.

Active between 1918–1934, Ulmann’s work reflects the influences of multiple art movements, illustrating a major shift in American photographic portraiture. She was trained during the height of pictorialism, a movement that sought to elevate photography to a fine art by encouraging artists to manipulate the image, most often by deliberately blurring the subject in order to intensify atmosphere. As she began publishing portraits of prominent writers, actors and intellectuals in magazines, however, her work took on a much more photojournalistic approach, incorporating the clean lines and sharp focus that was becoming popular with modernism.

Ulmann’s first main body of work consists of studio portraits of the literary and cultural elite, with an emphasis placed on the inclusion of professional African Americans and women—a rare pursuit at the time. With each portrait, Ulmann sought to convey enough of the individual’s personality and character for viewers to perceive a sense of what they were like as a person. Typically shot inside the comfort and privacy of her apartment in New York City’s Upper East Side, the subjects appear

on the lives and experiences of Southern African Americans.

Her travels continued with John Jacob Niles, a musician, actor and folklorist who served as her near-constant companion until her death in 1934. Sensing the wake of urbanization, Ulmann took deep interest in preserving the rural traditions and folklore of Appalachia. Traveling throughout Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina, she documented craftspeo-

at ease and perhaps more approachable than they would have been in public settings.

As she began to venture outside of the city to the New England countryside, she took images of members of religious groups such as the Shakers, Mennonites and German Baptist Dunkards, foreshadowing her deep interest and dedication to capturing members of cloistered communities.

Though she succeeded in photographing several notable icons—Albert Einstein appears on the gallery wall, for example— her most interesting work gives insight into the lives of the African-American and Gullah communities of coastal South Carolina and Georgia, as well as Appalachian craftspeople and other inhabitants of the rural South. After meeting novelist Julia Peterkin, the two traveled together through the South and combined their passions to create Roll, Jordan, Roll, a colPhotograph by Doris Ulmann lection of photographs and essays. Published in 1933, the book was the only one of its ple woodworking, quilting, spinning and kind from the ’30s to focus exclusively basket weaving. Close-up images of hands

Whether a blacksmith, doll maker, potter or chair maker, each subject was photographed with utmost dignity. Many of these images are published in Allen Eaton’s book Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands.

In addition to “Vernacular Modernism,” the museum is currently exhibiting “For Home and Country: World War I Posters from the Blum Collection” and “One Heart, One Way: The Journey of a Princely Art Collection.” The museum will celebrate all temporary shows during Museum Mix, a late-night art party featuring a set by DJ .53, aka MFA sculpture student AC Carter (who also performs as Lambda Celsius), on Sept. 27 from 8–11 p.m., and again during the quarterly reception 90 Carlton: Autumn on Oct. 19 at 5:30 p.m.

Pleading for Perfection THE BULLDOGS BEAT A GOOD TEAM ON A BAD DAY

By Cy Brown news@flagpole.com With a 20-point lead halfway through the third quarter of Georgia’s eventual 43–29 SEC East victory over the Missouri Tigers, Kirby Smart had a conniption. It was one of many moments in which Smart looked like a stark, raving lunatic in Columbia, and, brother, I felt your pain. We all did.

Following a late-hit penalty on a crucial third down deep in Georgia territory, cameras caught Smart pounding his chest and pleading with defensive lineman Tyler Clark, “TYLER! TYLER! WHY? WHHYYYYYYY?” (The penalty was actually on Jonathan Ledbetter.) Missouri went on to score a touchdown on that drive to make the final quarter and a half too close for comfort for Bulldog fans.

Jake Fromm and the passing game also struggled at times, but did show an incredible capacity for big plays. Of Fromm’s 260 passing yards, 148 came on a trio of long touchdowns to Riley Ridley, Jeremiah Holloman and Mecole Hardman. That bigplay ability was exactly what we wanted Fromm and the passing game to develop this season. Now, if the running game can get back near the level it was at last year with Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, baby, you’ve got a stew going.

But the saving grace of this game, and arguably what prevented an upset, was another weapon every fan hoped the Dawgs would add to their arsenal this season: big plays on defense. Against Missouri, 17

Of all the big plays and crazy moments in the 14-point win, that penalty—one of seven for Georgia on the day—is the moment that sticks out most in the aftermath. Maybe that’s because we’re entering the “Pleading for Perfection” portion of the Kirby Smart era. Georgia played badly Saturday, but only by the standards of this new age of Georgia football. All things being equal, a two-touchdown win over arguably the second-best team in the SEC East is a really good win, one Georgia fans would’ve been ecstatic about two or three years ago, but few were pleased with that win. Neither were Smart or his players.

Yet I remain optimistic, not in spite of, but because of the anger I and Dawg fans everywhere felt after that win.

Championship-caliber teams beat good opponents on bad days, which is exactly what Georgia did Saturday. It gave me confidence that when this team actually puts it all together and plays a game free of errors, it will be a sight to behold. This was a bad performance we should all feel good about.

Offensively, Georgia wasn’t as sharp as it should have been against an underrated defense. This largely stems from the ground game, the fulcrum of this offense.

The Dawgs finished with 185 rushing yards, their first game this season in which they didn’t eclipse 250 yards on the ground.

points could be attributed to the defense or special teams. First was Tyson Cambell’s 64-yard strip-and-score to go up 7-0 in the first quarter. Then came Tae Crowder’s interception off a tipped Drew Lock pass in the second quarter, returned 43 yards to set up a field goal. Finally, Eric Stokes Jr. blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to put Georgia up by 13 with about six minutes left in the first half.

More than anything, that ability to swing games through defense and special teams is what Georgia lacked last year. The Dawgs only had one non-offensive touchdown last season: J.R. Reed’s fumble return in garbage time against Florida. Through four games this season, they already have four. Georgia’s ability to create points on defense and special teams was the difference against Missouri, and it could ultimately be the difference in this season.

While everything might not have gone right in this game, enough did for the team to never trail and win by two scores. But if you still don’t feel good about it, feel good about this: You ain’t a Tennessee fan. The Vols lost 47–21 to Florida Saturday night at Neyland. Call me optimistic—actually, call me realistic—but I think it gets much worse for the Vols when they travel to Athens this weekend. If all goes as it should, it should be a performance we will feel great about. f

Reply, or Let It Lie? ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Heyyyyyy, Bonita, I wrote to you a while back because I was dating a guy who had a lot of great qualities, but I wasn’t attracted to him [“Should I Stay With My Great Guy Even Though There’s No Spark?”, Mar. 21]. You advised breaking up with him, and you were so right. I broke up with him and immediately felt better. I hadn’t realized that being with him was bringing me down until I broke up with him and the spell was lifted. It hadn’t been terrible, but once I stopped having to act more into him than I was, it felt like a light mist had suddenly lifted.

When I broke up with him over the phone, he didn’t exactly try to talk me out of it, but the conversation did go on longer than seemed necessary to me, and longer than I would have liked. Whenever a guy has broken up with me, I’ve tried to say, “OK, got it, the end.” But this guy wanted to give a long rambling speech about how he wasn’t going to get angry, try to change my

Each time, it was just a one- or two-sentence email saying something to the effect of, “I hope you’re having a good summer” or “I hope work is going well.” These emails all felt, to me, like an attempt to get back into my life and perhaps rekindle our relationship. I didn’t want to rekindle the relationship, I didn’t want to give him false hope, and, being just one sentence long and not asking a question, the emails didn’t seem to call for an urgent response. After he sent the most recent email, about four days went by. I didn’t respond, and he emailed me again. This email was short, but really sarcastic and ugly, “thanking” me for not responding to his previous emails.

My question: This angry email—and I always saw that he had some anger, which was one of my reservations about him, although it had never been directed at me before—felt like an escalation because I hadn’t responded

When a person dumps you, it means they don’t want to have an intimate relationship, and communication is a form of intimacy. That is why you are not obligated to communicate with him in any way: because you’ve already told him as much. He needs to understand that.

I’d say it’s time to respond with a very short, very firm message that you don’t want to be in contact, because I agree, this feels like an escalation. Do it via email so you have it in writing, because we live in a sad world where you might need that record of communication one day.

Really, though, his escalating Nice Guy aggression and the idea that we’re awful bitches for being bothered by it—I’m sure there’s at least one of you out there thinking this—are borne of the misogyny and rape culture that we live in, so don’t come for me if this response seems too much. f

I find this unsettling, too. The bells started ringing for me when he responded to being dumped by talking about your “connection” and wanting another chance right after insisting that he wasn’t upset and would not ignore your “no.” He then proceeded to do exactly that, pretty much, by lashing out at you when you refused to humor him.

Nice Guy tactics like this are creepy as hell, dudes. You may not think you’re doing much by emailing your ex every time you think of her, but it’s really the social media equivalent to going to the coffee shop where she works every day and insisting it’s just

The People Paper CLAUDE WILLIAMS AND GLENN VAUGHN ORCHESTRATED A REVOLUTION HERE

By Pete McCommons editor@flagpole.com Millard Grimes, whose life in journalism belies the shibboleth of “fake news,” reminded me recently that the two men most directly responsible for a bold Athens newspaper effort both died earlier this year.

The ingenious entrepreneur and supporter of all things Athenian, Claude Williams, is well known here; the relentlessly innovative editor, Glenn Vaughn, not so much.

at all levels, and everything else shaking here, to win the hearts and minds of Athenians before somebody snapped up the semi-moribund Banner-Herald.

That somebody came along sooner than expected in the form of the Morris boys from Augusta, who outbid everybody else based on their inside knowledge that the ABH had around $800,000 in the bank, so even if they bid a million, they couldn’t lose.

The Morrises had deep pockets full of hardballs, and they immediately started putting the squeeze on the upstart and eventually got to the money man and bought the Daily News out from under Williams, who had extended his own credit to the limit in keeping his paper going.
