Demolitions Are Endangering Five Points

A recent Milledge Circle demolition request uproar demonstrates the jeopardy and endangerment that rampant demolition poses for two residential areas of central Five Points.

The recent demolition request for 177 Carlton Terrace (demo No. 18-061718) was extended by Commissioner Allison Wright to Sept. 6, just a day away. Each passing day, without action, is a lost opportunity. A neighbor, who is homebound by health issues, recently posted an appeal on the Friends of Five Points listserv to save the house.

I hope others have made known their opposition to having this house torn down and the street substantially altered.

A meaningful response to our continuing “demolition derby” would be a moratorium on all requests in central Five Points (including 177 Carlton Terrace), applied to two specific neighborhood areas. While this step may seem extreme, it is minor compared to sanctioning the continued destruction of properties over 50 years of age, i.e., those that are “historic.”

Otherwise, the demo derby will continue to destroy historic properties until there are but few historic properties remaining. And then we will look like suburbia.

The two specific endangered areas are each bisected by South Milledge Avenue as you travel south away from Five Points.

Both sides include residential properties on Milledge itself. Area 1, on the left, is bounded by Milledge Avenue, Morton Avenue, Agricultural Drive and Southview, back to Milledge. As a part of a field study, a boundary connecting Morton and Agricultural Drive would need to be established. Area 2, on the right, is bounded

by Milledge Avenue, Milledge Terrace, Greenwood (near Memorial Park) around to Milledge Heights, and then using the first cross street to connect to Parkway, and Parkway back to Milledge Avenue.

While Athens has designated a number of areas as historic districts, it has ignored almost as many as it has designated. Each neighborhood should be given an equal opportunity for designation based on its age.

Our Athens-Clarke County Unified Government is the only source for that assistance. The volume of demolition requests granted, and the subsequent rebuilding of (usually) larger replacement

homes, has enhanced the local tax base.

This should provide the revenue to fund neighborhood surveys by our Planning Department.

Please do not dismiss these concerns as a need for quickie neighborhood referendums not based upon an appraisal of actual pres-

ervation opportunity and value. The two area proposals referenced herein reflect a quick drive I took around the neighborhood and my impression that most structures were at least 50 years old. The exact final boundary determination would be a part of the proposed survey.

Cedar Shoals Gets Bad Rap I am a student at Cedar Shoals. Recently, I spoke out against the Athens BannerHerald for their lack of equal representation of Athens high schools. After the start of the high-school football season, OnlineAthens posted articles about the wins of Clarke Central and Oconee County high schools, but not the win of Cedar Shoals against Madison County. In their football roundup, they wrote a very vague paragraph about the Cedar vs. Madison game, not mentioning anybody by name, yet players from other schools were recognized by name.

This problem goes far beyond football.

Around Athens, Cedar Shoals is known as the “bad” high school, which is completely

untrue. Whenever Cedar Shoals is in the media, especially on OnlineAthens, it is because there was a negative incident.

Compared to our counterpart, Clarke Central, everybody knows about our failures, but not theirs.

This issue still is not about the failures of the two schools—it is the fact that the accomplishments of Cedar Shoals are not often recognized, and certainly not as much as Clarke Central. This problem of media portrayal has gone on for far too long.

Everything that people know about the two high schools comes from our local news, and since a majority of articles about Cedar are negative, there is a negative connotation about our school.

I am very proud of going to Cedar Shoals, but it is very disheartening to see the reaction when you tell people you go to Cedar.

We are not criminals, and we are not violent. Our students have been working hard to disprove our bad reputation, but it is still not recognized.

Through social media, I have gotten many students from different schools to comment under some of OnlineAthens’ Instagram posts to bring awareness to the media shutout of Cedar Shoals. I write this because it is time for a change. Cedar Shoals deserves to be looked at for what it really is: a good school with a dedicated student body. Sure, we have our problems, but they are no different than Clarke Central or any other high school. We are not the “bad” school in Athens.

We are the future, and our students are tired of being looked down upon.

Writing to you is just the start of my plans for improving our reputation, and I hope Cedar Shoals sees a better reputation in the future.

Hice Reaches New Heights of Hypocrisy U.S. Rep. Jody Hice (R-Greensboro) has reached the height of hypocrisy. He is one of a few extremists who, for totally political reasons, have proposed that the House impeach Rod Rosenstein, the Republican deputy attorney general who is overseeing the Mueller investigation. There is absolutely no rational reason for taking this action, other than to impede and halt this highly productive investigation by removing Robert Mueller.

At the same time, Hice, who supports President Trump regardless of how outrageous his lies and actions are, has not said one word about impeaching Trump.

Objectively, there is more than ample reason to consider his impeachment, although it clearly will not happen under this partisan Congress.

As most of you know, Hice is a former right-wing talk show host and extremist

preacher. The only reason that he was elected to represent Athens, a liberal bastion in a red state, is that our state legislature decided to add rural, very-red counties into the district to ensure a moderate (like Ken Dious, the Democrat who ran against him in 2014) stood no chance. This gerrymandering is responsible for electing ideologues like Hice all over the country, in many red (and a lesser number of blue) states.

Hice does not represent his district well.

He was against the Affordable Care Act, which has cut the number of uninsured in Georgia by over half. He was for Trumpcare, which would have resulted in a $662 billion windfall for the very wealthy and the loss of insurance for 23 million Americans. Of course, Hice also believes in doing away with the progressive income tax, which has the working man paying proportionately less than the billionaire.

Hice believes women are subservient to men. Per Hice, a woman can enter politics, “as long as she is acting within the authority of her husband.” He also had the audacity to compare gay marriage to bestiality.

He is against any form of gun control, although our gun deaths per capita are five times that of any European nation, all of which have strong gun control. Further, over 60 percent of Americans believe that there are specific measures which should be taken to strengthen our laws to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and crazy people. Needless to say, the National Rifle Association fully supports Hice (as well as the recently indicted Russian spy).

He does not believe in the separation of church and state, ignoring the fact that the Constitution is clear on this matter.

Hice also fails to acknowledge that many of our founding fathers—including Ethan Hale, Samuel Paine, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Ben Franklin—did not believe in the Trinity or Christianity as Hice preaches it.

Back when I was a commissioner in Jasper County, not far from Athens, Hice encouraged the Barrow County Board of Commissioners to have religious displays in their courthouse. This was clearly unconstitutional, and they lost the case, paying $150,000 to the ACLU to offset legal fees.

Hice just didn’t understand that we are not a theocracy, and still doesn’t.

The only way that we can make progress in our nation is to rid our Congress and state legislatures of extremists like Hice.

That will only happen if we vote them out.

Stop Idling While On Your Phone I visit the Athens-Clarke County Library most days, and also often stop over at Kroger to pick up something I might need.

Maybe I am just going crazy, but it seems like every time I pull into their parking lots, I find myself parked next to a car sitting there with windows closed, engine running and the driver engrossed in his or her cell phone.

I know that a car engine has to be running to get the driver from point A to point B, and that the pollution is feeding global warming. Do we need to just sit there in our cars, with the engine spewing out poison, just to check our cell phones again and again? Does this bother anyone else?

A Second Life CAMPAIGN TO FIX UP MAGNOLIA STREET BUILDING BEGINS

T

he square concrete block building on Magnolia Street—the one with the curved glass block corner—is about to be made over for the next generation.

For 50 years, the building served as a hub for Athens’ African-American community, first as home to American Legion Post 535 in the 1950s and later as the first daycare for African-American children. At the height of its history, between 1950–1970, the Frank C. Maddox Center hosted concerts, receptions, meetings, social services and even a place of worship.

On a recent Thursday evening at the Greater Bethel AME Church next door, which owns the Frank C. Maddox Center, congregants and other community members announced plans for the next phase of the building’s life—one that will restore it to its former post-war glory, as well as its status as a community hub.

“We had been talking about fixing up the Maddox Center, but this just exceeded my expectations,” said Tommie Farmer, a member of Greater Bethel AME who has helped spearhead the project. “I am more hopeful now, and we will just keep on going.”

Farmer was reacting to plans unveiled at the meeting that showed how the building could look for the next generation. Designed by Arcollab Architectural Collaborative of Athens, drawings combine practical design aspects, such as a new support system for the roof and a change to the second-floor stairway to reveal that glass block wall when you enter the space, as well as modern updates that allow the space to work for the community.

Along with the drawings, Arcollab also worked with Greater Bethel members and Magnolia Street residents to come up with potential new uses for the building. Using these ideas, said Lori Bork Newcomer, founding principal of Arcollab, helped

the design team plan a space that could accommodate meetings, events, concerts and classes—all ideas generated by the neighborhood.

“This is the bones of the space,” she told the audience as she walked them through exterior and interior drawings on display at the front of the sanctuary. “We tried to come up with ideas that were the most multipurpose. We really looked at it as a community center. It could be used for community meetings, banquets and a history center.”

Plans also call for a prep kitchen, rather than a full-scale commercial kitchen, to help save on renovation costs. A small addition on the back of the building accommodates this, as well as new bathrooms.

“The original building is Art Deco, with simple geometry and glass block, so we are trying to stay within that same geometry and pay homage to the original intentions of the building,” Newcomer added. “We realize the historic and cultural significance this building has on the community, and it is a privilege to work on the project.”

The unveiling of the drawings was just a first step in the process. Newcomer said her team is proposing the project be done in two phases: first, a “dry in” of the building to make it safe and structurally stable.

Second, the team would work with Curtiss Whitsel of Whitsel Construction Services to get some specific construction costs to further stabilize the building and finish construction.

While Greater Bethel AME waits for the numbers, fundraising has begun. That was part of the mission of the evening’s meeting, but the effort is ongoing. The project is also a collaboration with the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, which is working on grants to help supplement construction costs and to get the building listed on the

National Register of Historic Places due to its significance in the African-American community.

“We’re so excited about what’s happening. Dad had a dream about doing things— now you all have this vision,” said Frank C. Maddox III, whose father purchased the building for the church in 1965. Maddox served as pastor from about 1962–1974 but died earlier this summer, before the new plans for the building were realized.

Before Maddox and the church owned the building, its roots stretch to the founding of American Legion Post 535. Founded in 1947, its first members rented a building at the corner of Rocksprings and Broad but soon realized they needed more space.

According to a history of the building compiled by Farmer, the members bought the Magnolia Street property and built their new home as part of a large community effort soon after the chapter was founded.

In the 1950s, meetings took place at 8:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. During this time, the building was also used for concerts and other gatherings, but dissention within the membership forced its cancellation in 1963.

Around the same time, Greater Bethel AME was in need of a new home. The church, originally located at the corner of Broad and Billups streets, had burned (and the widening of Broad Street was pushing into the building’s walls), so its new

pastor, Maddox, purchased the building and deeded it to the church. It was used for services until the church’s current home was built in 1965, and then became a daycare for African-American children, since none was available at the time. According to Farmer’s history, the daycare’s kitchen was equipped with surplus utensils Maddox collected from the University of Georgia.

Eventually a coordinator from UGA’s early childhood education program was assigned to the center, turning it into a working laboratory. At its height, the center enrolled more than 100 children.

The building was officially closed in 1996. Today, regulations would make renovating it into a new daycare cost-prohibitive, said Newcomer.

But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have life left in it. She added that these are the types of projects her firm likes to tackle—the old buildings people think are too far gone to save.

That argument is easily made for residents and church members like Luther Durham. The building is part of his childhood, he said, and it’s worth saving.

“I remember the building before Rev. Maddox even bought the building. I was very young when the American Legion was in it, but I can remember some of the events they held. I can remember the stage and playing in a band in there,” said Durham. “It’s a lot of fond memories.” f

American skepticism about entomophagy is to be expected, anthropologist Julie Lesnik said in a keynote lecture. Though humans have been eating insects dating back 1.8 million years, she explained that as groups moved away from warm, equatorial climates, insects were replaced in the diet.

Western culture just doesn’t have the same history of eating bugs as groups whose ancestors came from, say, the Amazon.

As a result, eating insects is often considered disgusting and uncivilized by people in Western countries. To that, Lesnik said, don’t yuck my yum. “Disgust is learned,” she said. “‘Yucking’ is othering a large population on Earth”—the millions of people who continue to rely on insects like termites and ants as a nutrition source.

Shockley herself has devoted her career to educating students and community members about eating insects through outreach events, and she often makes insect treats to share with the crowd. She works mostly with crickets, mealworms and chapulines, a type of Mexican grasshopper commonly used in Oaxacan cuisine.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE: The deservedly well-praised documentary series Athens Rising will be screened at Live Wire Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. and Trio Contemporary Art Gallery Thursday, Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. Significantly, the film is focused on what’s happening in Athens right now, not on our storied, mythological history. Further, it takes the entire creative community into account, not just a handful of popular rock and roll bands. Look, as much as I have an enduring and abundant affection for the days of yore that brought me to town in the first place, I’ll also be the first to insist that a scene is an organic, living thing that necessarily changes, grows, expands and diversifies, or… it dies. So, hats off to the filmmakers and participants for recognizing such with unbridled enthusiasm and depth of perspective.

This year, the program was dubbed “Libraries Rock!,” and each child who completed 50 books or 25 hours of reading received the prize of a 7-inch record. The two artists who recorded songs for the single were Kishi Bashi and Blacknerdninja (aka Eugene Willis). In the additional edification department, this record was chosen as a finalist—one of five out of 237 entries total—for the Making Vinyl Packaging Awards, which will be decided in Detroit in October. I’m pretty sure this was all done by founder Scott Sapp, even though the credits list a whole bunch of names that are pretty obviously pseudonyms. At any rate, yet again with Social Circle, it’s absolutely impossible to discern what’s sampled and what’s played, so don’t even bother.

That said, everything except one track is noted as being original. The most appropriate approach is just to throw on the headphones and groove. There’s a real trashy, loungeact feel to most of this that recalls nothing so much as the song-poem compilation of the 1990s named Beat of the

It’s a totally solid listen, but is also fairly comfortable and doesn’t really push the envelope the way so many Razzi King records have. Toons, Trash and Tributes RECEPTIONS AT THE QUIET GALLERY AND DODD GALLERIES

These plastic items—bottles, hair combs, tampon applicators, cutlery, six-pack rings, pylons, bowling pins—are cast in plastic and painted in earthen tones. Resembling fossilized refuse, the scene seems as if it could be from a future time and place where plastics are deeply embedded into the earth but yet to erode.

Bursts of plastic flamingos, mermaids and beachy kitsch interrupt Florida’s terrain of tropical palms, eerie swamps and coastal mangroves, establishing a landscape where the natural and artificial coexist. “The Florida Room” addresses this dichotomy through artwork by Dodd graduate students who hail from the Sunshine State: Nick Abrami, Dimelza Broche, Cristina Echezarreta, Paula Runyon and Taylor Shaw.

Georgia Theatre · 7:30 p.m. · $16–18 Formed by singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield, Waxahatchee has been a steady presence in the alternative scene since 2012. Waxahatchee began as a solo project while Crutchfield also played in P.S. Eliot, the band she formed with her twin sister, Allison. From those punk roots came the new, softer style Crutchfield is known for today. After releasing its first album, American Weekend, in 2012, Waxahatchee began to climb the indie charts. “Be Good,” a single from that record, was embraced by outlets like NPR, leading in part to the band’s current success. The group has released three albums since, the most recent being its 2017 effort, Out in the Storm. [Rosemary Scott]

Screening in celebration of its 20th anniversary, cult anime film Perfect Blue was the directorial debut of Satoshi Kon, who went on to create the dream-traveling mind-melter Paprika. Similarly blurring the line between reality and illusion, the psychological thriller follows the identity breakdown of idolized J-pop star Mima Kirigoe as she leaves behind music to pursue a career in acting, only to be derailed by a delusional stalker.

Critical of fame, celebrity culture and the male-dominated movie industry, the film serves as a cautionary tale of fandom gone terribly wrong. Presented by Fathom Events, Thursday’s screening will be subtitled, whereas Monday’s will be dubbed in English. [Jessica Smith]

Dipping temperatures may be the only way to tell fall’s release slate from that of summer, as tentpole blockbusters, sequels and remakes dominate the release schedule.

Do not expect many of these features to be Best Picture contenders, and Athens is unlikely to see many of those films until 2019. However, the winner of the new Oscar for Best Popular Film could come from this list, if they can knock off current frontrunners Black Panther or A Quiet Place.

1. Aquaman (Dec. 21) I understand that Batman v Superman and its follow-up, Justice League, are not everyone’s favorite superhero movies. However, I will argue the merits of the former and long for the rumored Snyder cut of the latter. My hopes are high for the first solo adventure for the former superhero punchline who talks to fish. Jason Momoa has made Arthur Curry/Aquaman cool, and The Conjuring’s James Wan has few duds on his filmography. The plot requires Aquaman to battle his half-brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson), for control of Atlantis.

2. Halloween (Oct. 19) Aquaman’s only real competition for the top spot is David Gordon Green and Danny McBride’s reboot-cum-sequel to John Carpenter’s slasher classic. The filmmakers have tossed out every Halloween sequel to pick up Michael Myers’ story 40 years after the night he came home. The trailer promises a horror flick strong with Carpenter DNA, including a score by the master himself.

3. Bohemian Rhapsody (Nov. 2) Rami Malek looks tremendously like Freddie Mercury in this biopic from Bryan Singer that takes Queen up to its 1985 Live Aid performance.

4. Suspiria (Nov. 2) Dario Argento’s original Suspiria may be horror’s artsiest entry. The trailer for the remake from Luca Guadagnino, the Italian director of the acclaimed Call Me by Your Name, makes me think he gets it. Fifty Shades’ Dakota Johnson is the new American ballerina attending a European ballet school run by witches and Tilda Swinton. I just hope Athens gets a chance to see this flick.

5. The Predator (Sept. 14) The Predator could be really terrible, but putting Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black, who appeared in the original, in the director’s chair is inspired. Co-writing a script with The Monster Squad’s Fred Dekker certainly does

not hurt the film’s chances. Nor does the premise of an ultimate Predator. Weak trailers, on the other hand, severely cap my expectations.

6. The Nun (Sept. 7) Weak trailers are not The Nun’s problem. It looks genuinely—if generically—terrifying. The Conjurings are way more professional than their minorleague spinoffs, the Annabelles. That darkeyed nun is way more petrifying than a scary doll. Still, no one will be surprised if the final product is just another subpar horror flick.

7. Venom (Oct. 5) A live-action movie featuring Spider-Man villain Venom (Tom Hardy stars as the meat in the suit, Eddie Brock), as an antihero slightly edged out

the animated Spider-Man: Into the SpiderVerse (out Dec. 14) for fall’s most anticipated Spidey-related feature. Still, despite a stronger second trailer, something about Venom—which is not part of the larger MCU—feels off.

8. First Man (Oct. 12) The only known prestige release to make this list, First Man re-teams La La Land’s Damien Chazelle and Ryan Gosling for an intense retelling of the first moon landing.

9. Mary Poppins Returns (Dec. 21) On paper, Mary Poppins Returns is a smash. No one can fill the shoes of Julie Andrews, but Emily Blunt’s casting has drawn few criticisms. Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda as the Dick Van Dyke stand-in adds some nice diversity to a cast that may include every British actor you can name.

10. Holmes and Watson (Dec. 21) I know absolutely nothing about this movie, but the mere idea of Step Brothers’ Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly teaming up as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson would make my Top 10 most-anticipated movies list any year. f

Housemate Headaches ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

I just moved back to town, and I’m living away from home in an off-campus apartment for the first time ever, after commuting to UGA for the past two years. I found my roommate with help from a Facebook student housing group, and I HATE THEM. They totally lied about everything before moving in—they are definitely not tidy, quiet and single!

The bummer is that we are both on the lease together, so I can’t just kick them out, plus I just can’t afford to live alone. I have plenty of friends in town, but I don’t wanna be a couch surfer. I’m from a nearby town and could just start to commute again, but this has basically ruined my summer daydream of living off-campus and away from home for the first time ever.

Any tips?

Honestly, my first piece of advice to you would have been to never agree to live with someone you barely know, but it’s too late for that now. Your real options here are to move out and find a new place with a new roommate, or try to talk it out with your current roomie and make things better. Try the latter if you want, but I doubt it’ll work, because it’s very hard to teach an old (or drunk) Dawg new tricks, and she just might respond more defensively than helpfully.

I say leave. You can easily sign your portion of the lease over to a subletter, though you’ll probably lose half of your deposit or something. There’s always a smattering of rental properties that open up at the beginning of the semester, so keep an eye on the Flagpole Classifieds and let your real friends know you’re on the prowl for a new place, then move in with one of them.

I’ve been dating a guy since January. We met on a dating app, and what’s funny is that my roommate turned him down like two weeks before we got together on the same app! She really thought he was “too normie”; plus, she was offended that he celebrated certain

holidays. Doesn’t matter to me, though, and we get along great. I spent the summer here, but he got back in town last month, and I was the first person he saw.

I still live with the same people, and my roommate suddenly has a problem with my boyfriend coming over. She says he uses too much of the house’s resources—I don’t know what that means—and she just doesn’t like extra people in the house, so he should only be allowed to sleep over once a week. Of course, this is the same girl who blew him off—and right into my lap—and she has remained single since.

I hate catty behavior, but I see through her flimsy reasons, and it pisses me off that she’s trying to bring our entire household into her very personal dating problems. She’s told me a few times that

she doesn’t really care for him, but this seems petty beyond reason. Is my roommate trying to sabotage my relationship?

I think so. I’ve seen this behavior before, and it would be even worse if she’d actually managed to date him before you did. She’s probably embarrassed to still be single after snubbing him, only to find him with her roommate. I empathize, but there’s no need to be adversarial towards your roommate because she cuffed someone up.

Sure, get your boyfriend his own shampoo for the bathroom, but if he’s really just hanging out with you and your roommate is making a big deal out of nothing, say so.

Challenge her position, because she’s trying to bring this issue to your entire household, which could eventually lead to you being kicked out or your boyfriend being banned from the premises. Stand your ground, because you have the right to have guests in your home, and this guy is only a threat to your roommate’s ego. f Need advice?
