Finally, the board of education has 42 new policies on the agenda for its Thursday, Aug. 9 meeting. It’s a lot to slog through, but Athens for Everyone did the work, and they’re not happy with a few. Specifically, the left-leaning group thinks a couple of the policies discourage debate among board members and board oversight, and consolidate too much power in the superintendent’s hands. RIP Virginia Walker One of Athens’ most prominent civil rights leaders died Tuesday, July 31 at age 72 after a series of strokes dating back to 2005. Walker was the last of the “Four Matrons,” along with Jessie Barnett, Evelyn Neely and Miriam Moore, who successfully pushed for improvements in the local African-American community starting in the late 1960s, insisting that federal money from the Urban Renewal and Model Cities programs go toward raising the standard of living in East Athens. They were instrumental in starting the Athens Neighborhood Health Center, building the Miriam Moore Community Center, redeveloping the Iron Triangle (now Triangle Plaza) with a police substation, and starting numerous social services programs, such as Family Connection/Communities in Schools, the Family Counseling Service,

Big Rigs Block Traffic I moved to Athens in 1992. Naturally, many changes have taken place over the years since then—some good, some not so much. Our population has grown along with the enrollment at UGA. More people equals more vehicles. Until a year or two ago, the increase in traffic wasn’t so bad that it affected my ability to get from Point A to Point B in the amount of time I expected to. I drive around for a living, and have gotten to the point where I can make a very close estimate of the time it will take me to travel to my appointments.

However, over the past year or so, I’ve noticed, as I’m sure many other drivers have, that there’s backed-up traffic at several major intersections, that even with a left-turn arrow one can sit and wait for five or 10 minutes to get through the intersection, adding significantly to one’s travel time and wasting gas.

The latest problem I’ve noticed is the serious backup of vehicles on exit ramps from the bypass onto some surface roads. At some times of day, the vehicles are actually backed up onto the Loop—they can’t even get onto the exit ramp until a couple of series of the traffic lights have allowed enough vehicles to move off the ramps and into the street. I don’t know about anyone else, but I find that dangerous. There has got to be someone who is in charge of dealing with the smooth and safe flow of traffic in Athens-Clarke County, and that person is not keeping up with the needs of the increased vehicles.

Yes, in a perfect world we’d all be using public transit or bicycles or walking, but the reality of it is that I can’t carry all of my equipment and necessary tools of my trade (veterinary house calls) in any other way than a vehicle.

One of the main contributors to this mess of traffic backup is the proliferation

of tractor trailers on the surface roads in Athens. All it takes is three or four of these 40-foot-long behemoths on an exit ramp to create the back-ups onto the Loop on any given exit. They also delay entry onto several entrance ramps due to taking up the entire left-turn lanes that are used for vehicles waiting to get onto the Loop. This creates another delay for the “regular” vehicles to get through the series of traffic lights that will permit them to finally get onto the Loop.

Why are there so many tractor trailers on the surface roads all day and night? Isn’t there some way to divert them to some other directions where the traffic for citizens won’t be as badly affected? Do we need wider exit ramps and longer entry lanes for the Loop in order to avoid the backups

to see the overhead traffic lights and safely pass through or turn from the intersection.

I’m surprised there haven’t been more serious accidents and fatalities due to these problems.

I would love to see fewer tractor trailers on the roads in Athens, especially during peak drive times. (Yes, we now have morning and evening rush hours, which we didn’t have until the past few years.) Can the trucks be limited to nighttime only? I don’t know the answers, but I sure know the problems, and something has got to give.

On White Extinction Anxiety

The key to notoriety is, some would say, to coin a phrase or make up a term that captures previous meaning—meaning sensed and maybe even understood, but not spoken—and then magnify it through use of that new phrase. Charles M. Blow did that when he wrote a column for the June 24 edition of the Sunday New York Times.

in the U.S. population with Latino, Asian and African heritage will be nothing short of dramatic. White extinction anxiety, as labeled by Blow, is here now and sadly may grow in intensity as this diversification of the U.S. population continues.

As evidence of the existence of white extinction anxiety, I recommend two books that I list on the syllabus for a university course I teach. The course is titled “U.S. Immigration and Refugee Policy and Programs.” The two books are Pat Buchanan’s State of America: The Third World Invasion and Conquest of America and Ann Coulter’s “!Adios America!: The Left’s Plan to Turn Our Country Into a Third World Hellhole.

Both authors offer no apologies for the bigoted and isolationist views they put forward in their books. The problem is that both books provide more than ample incendiary fuel for persons already anxiously struggling with the changing population demographics of the United States.

If further reading is desired, I recommend an additional book, Jean Raspail’s Camp of the Saints. This apocalyptic novel is, however, not for the faint of heart, and although I recommend the book, I do not require my students to read it. The details of the harrowing tale of woe and destruction depicted in the book can be just too overwhelming. The book’s focus is the idea that the countries and people of the developed West will be overrun by degenerates and undesirables from the hinterlands of the undeveloped countries of the world, if something is not done to stop such a movement. Whites will lose out as the “browning” of the world leaps forward. Western civilization will be destroyed. It should come as a surprise to no one that Bannon, of previous Breitbart fame, once stated that one of his favorite books is Camp of the Saints.

A fulcrum of division for the people of the United States, even during, but particularly after the Trump presidency has ended, will be that those persons who can accept these described demographic population changes will flourish. And those who cannot and continue to suffer from the malady of white extinction anxiety will not.

Pickups and Politics THE TRUCK AS SIGNIFIER FOR RURAL ROOTS

Like country singer Alan Jackson, who couldn’t “replace the way it made me feel” when his daddy let him take the wheel of his “old hand-me-down Ford,” even in middle age and far removed from their rural roots, Americans reared on a farm retained vivid memories of experiences with pickups

The pickup truck’s rise from its crude, makeshift origins to the near-luxury item status it enjoys today amounts to a Horatio Alger tale with a technological twist, providing a striking allegory of cherished national legends of progress and upward mobility.

In the early 20th Century, a number of Americans seeking a more expeditious means of hauling material that could not be crammed into or strapped atop the traditional motorcar took their tinsnips to the family Ford Model T, affixing a large box or old wagon bed to the rear of the chassis. But the Ford Motor Co. itself did not offer the first fully factory-assembled pickup truck until 1924–1925. Chevrolet and Dodge made serious moves into pickup production in the 1930s, and once the wartime production restrictions of the 1940s were lifted, the competitive scramble to cash in on pent-up demand led to a steady progression of bigger, more powerful trucks, which by the 1950s boasted six- and eight-cylinder engines supplying 100 horsepower, improved transmissions and easier steering.

By that point, the pickup was no longer simply an adjunct, but another vital technological component of one of the most far-reaching transformations in American history: the mechanization and consolidation of Southern agriculture.

With mules proving no match for the tractor in planting and cultivating his fields, the farmer needed to make not just the production but the transportation of his precious crop more efficient. A pickup truck could haul a bale of cotton five miles to the gin in scarcely the time it took to hitch two

that defined various stages of their youth.

As a 7-year-old boy, I lived for the thrill of riding to the gin sprawled atop a load of cotton piled high on our pickup. But several years later, I cringed at the mere prospect of accompanying my dad in the same mudand manure-encrusted truck on a trip to town, where I knew I faced the absolute certainty of encountering the prettiest, most stylish girl in my class.

The same forces that embedded the pickup in rural life would eventually begin to erode the foundations of that life. The dwindling prospects of any but the largest and most mechanized farming operations pushed much of the increasingly

marginalized population off the land toward the beckoning bustle of the metropolis. Although Americans fleeing the farm took memories of the family’s dilapidated old pickup with them, parking such a vehicle in your driveway guaranteed a cold shoulder on arrival in the studiedly urbane and fervently aspirational ’burbs.

Soon enough, however, rising metropolitan incomes and the growing popularity of camping, boating and other outdoor activities justified the acquisition of newer, better-kempt pickups, equipped with once-unheard-of comforts and conveniences like leather seats, air conditioning, extended cabs, automatic transmissions and power steering. Annual sales of pickups topped 2 million by 1980, and surged past 11 million in 2017.

With even the entry-level Dodge Ram 1500 stickering in the neighborhood of $65,000, many of today’s pampered pickups stand little chance of hauling cotton, hay, livestock or much of anything else likely to scratch them.

Though pickups continue to have some practical applications in theory, in practice a great number of them serve their owners primarily as “lifestyle vehicles,” or, some might even say, “lifestyle statements.” Indeed, for a sizable contingent of Americans, the pickup truck has emerged as a means of establishing their ties to a distinctly blue-collar identity in the course of flaunting their bourgeois prosperity.

The pickup truck had become a fixture in country music well before 1975, when David Allan Coe disputed his songwriter friend Steve Goodman’s claim that his “You Never Even Call Me by My Name” was the “perfect country song,” pointing out that it made no references to pickup trucks, trains, mothers, drinking and prison, all of which comprised the collective sine qua non of a legitimate country offering.

More than 40 years later, with luxury pickups offering some of the highest profit margins in the industry, manufacturers are riding the pop culture wave, their truck ads

awash in country artists and soundtrack.

Luke Bryan now serves as an official “brand ambassador” for Chevrolet, and neither the cultural nor economic distance between Music City and Motor City is as great as singer-songwriter Mel Tillis suggested 35 years ago in his classic “Detroit City.”

The pickup’s political implications have most commonly skewed right—even far right. The stereotypical combination of a gun rack and Rebel flag decal once conjured images of night-riding, racist thugs. Now, a pickup remains a preferred prop for politicians looking to portray themselves as “politically incorrect” conservatives on issue like guns and immigration. Georgia gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp apparently feared he might have been too subtle in an ad showing what appeared to be a couple of AR-15s in the background as he pointed a shotgun at teenage boy while prompting him to swear undying fealty to the Second Amendment. Just to be sure the message came through, Kemp followed up with another spot showing him in his Ford 350 XLT pickup, touting his “big truck,” which was going to come in handy when he went out to “round up criminal illegals.”

If the pickup truck is deeply ingrained in our national life and culture, like America itself, it has been and remains many things to many people. For generations born on the farm, it may summon a wave of classically bittersweet nostalgia. For some whose experiences with it have been less “up close and personal,” it has at times been a metaphor both for unvarnished rusticity and a comfortable, laid-back middle-class existence. For others, it has been a disquieting signifier of latent violence or vigilantism and active prejudice.

In what many Democrats hope is a sign of things to come in November, a progressive slate of candidates swept local offices May 22. Commissioner Kelly Girtz defeated his more conservative rival, former commissioner Harry Sims, by a two-to-one margin, with libertarian businessman Richie Knight running a distant third.

UGA Changes WHAT’S NEW ON CAMPUS AND WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

chool is back in session at the University of Georgia next week, and students have already started moving in. Here are some additions, upgrades and other changes those who’ve been gone for the summer may notice on campus.

ONE STOP SHOP: Back to school is stressful as-is for college students. In addition to figuring out class schedules and paying tuition, students have to map out the notoriously complicated bus routes, select a meal plan and purchase a parking permit.

But now, UGA has a new spot in the center of campus where students can take care of all of those back-to-school musts and save some of the stressing for finals.

In June, UGA’s Auxiliary Services opened its “One Stop Shop,” located in Tate Plaza next to the UGA Bookstore and behind the ATMs. A few of the new shop’s services include visitor information, meal plan signups, Bulldog Bucks depositing, license plate recognition permit registration, bus route information and citation payments. The location also has experts from UGA’s Dining Services and Transportation and Parking Services on site.

The shop is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

COLLEGE STATION PARK AND RIDE: Beginning this fall, UGA Transportation and Parking Services is offering a lower-cost option for parking with its new park-and-ride lot just off the Loop on College Station Road.

The lot will allow students, faculty and staff to park and be bused to campus by UGA transportation, said Greg Trevor, the executive director of media communications at UGA. The location will also be integrated into ACC bus routes. This semester, 150 parking spaces will be available. However, Trevor said the lot can be expanded in the future if there’s a high demand.

The lot will be $10 per month—half the price of the current lowest parking fee. Other permits range from $20–$40 per month, depending on the convenience of the lot’s location. The new lot was also designed to reduce traffic congestion as part

of the university’s focus on “traffic demand management, parking and access to and around campus,” Trevor said in a statement.

In addition to the new lot, UGA Transportation and Parking Services and Student Government Association is testing technology to “communicate real-time parking availability,” Trevor said. When completed, patrons will be able to check the number of available parking spaces through the UGA app or the Transportation and Parking Services website. The technology is currently being tested at the Tate Student Center Deck.

RUSSELL HALL AND MORE CONSTRUCTION: After a $44.5 million facelift to the Baxter Street dorm, opened in 1967, Russell Hall welcomed nearly 1,000 students Sunday, Aug. 5. The revamped Russell Hall provides more private dorm rooms and community bathrooms while also featuring larger, inviting community spaces for gatherings and study. “The common spaces in the building are intentionally designed for students to gather in groups or to find spaces for individual study,” Trevor said.

The new residence hall also features the Russell Academic Center, which includes the Russell Market (a convenience store open until 2 a.m.) and an outside patio.

In the dorm rooms, UGA Housing ditched the built-in metal furniture that was previously in the residence hall for new moveable loft beds, desks, dressers, drawers and other furniture. In addition, the floors were replaced with vinyl that has the appearance of hardwood.

The new dorms cost $2,886 per semester for a double room and community bath, and $3,186 a semester for a double room with a bathroom.

The third and last phase of the Business Learning Center near Lumpkin and Baxter streets will add two buildings to the Terry College of Business. The buildings will house roughly 10 additional classrooms, staff offices and conference rooms, according to Terry’s website.

by creating a new learning environment that was not available to business students before the BLC and its abundant common space opened,” Trevor said. “It’s now a place where business students can gather, study, work on projects, interact with faculty inside and outside the classroom and network with alumni and employers.”

This portion of the project and Phase II were funded by a public-private partnership between the state of Georgia and private donors. Correll Hall, the first phase of the project that opened in 2015, was funded solely by private contributions. Once finished, the six-year project will be one of the largest capital projects in the University System’s history at $140 million.

In addition, the first floor of the Main Library has been renovated to accommodate a Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros.

Bagels. “Students have adopted other parts of the Main Library for very quiet study, but were crowding into our rather small cafe for group work,” Toby Graham, university librarian and associate provost, told The Red & Black. “This project helps us to achieve a better mix of study environments, giving additional room and an intentionally designed space for student collaboration.”

The UGA Athletic Association will soon wrap up a $63 million expansion of Sanford Stadium. The project includes a new home locker room, recruitment facilities, restrooms, concession stands, video board and a plaza connecting the west-end seats directly to the Sanford Drive bridge.

In December, construction will begin on the new Interdisciplinary STEM Research Building. The building will be used solely as

a research facility and will give undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to work closely with researchers in the labs.

“The building will expand laboratories for chemistry, engineering and other material scientists, enable innovative interdisciplinary research, and house existing faculty across disciplines,” Trevor said.

NEW BUS ROUTES: Ten Athens Transit bus routes changed effective July 1, adding service to the Whitehead Road area and providing new links between campus and the Eastside. In addition, six routes through campus have been temporarily detoured during construction on Sanford Drive. See athenstransit.com for more information.

Campus Transit has changed the Health Sciences bus route effective Monday, Aug. 13. Rather than run all the way down Prince Avenue to downtown on its way to the main campus, buses will turn down Milledge Avenue, stopping at the Lucy Cobb Institute, Clarke Central High School, Springdale Street and Oakland Avenue.

They will then turn onto Rutherford, then Lumpkin Street and resume the former route at Snelling Dining Commons. Rather than stopping on demand, the number of stops on Prince Avenue has been limited to three: Piedmont Athens Regional, the President’s House at the corner of Prince and Grady Avenue, and the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at the corner of Prince and Nacoochee Avenue.

uring the academic year, some teachers in Athens leave the profession altogether. Others move to different districts in nearby counties or to other states. Some relocate with spouses who’ve finished degrees at the University of Georgia. And some retire after decades of working in public schools. That’s typical.

This year, though, Clarke County School District has had many more employees leave than past years. During the 2017–18 school year, CCSD had 320 resignations and 45 retirements among its 2,330 teachers, paraprofessionals, central office staff and support personnel—16 percent of the workforce. In 2016–17, there were 22

that teachers are fleeing because they feel “devalued and constantly under pressure.”

In Clarke County, the elementary school where the most employees left was Whit Davis, which lost 17 people, three of whom retired. If leadership was one of the reasons people left the school, things may change.

Whit Davis has a new principal, Tanisha Edwards, starting this academic year.

Whit Davis was followed by Alps Road and Fowler Drive elementary schools, which each lost 16 people. At Alps, one of those leaving was a retiree. Fowler had three employees retire.

Whitehead Road Elementary had only six resignations—the fewest of any school. Some parents speculated about why teachers don’t leave.

“The teachers are all so close to each other and have bonded over the years and seem to support each other,” said Chrissy Marlowe, whose children both attended Whitehead.

I’ll admit, when I first learned my child would be wearing a uniform to school, I bristled.

In Clarke County, all middle schools require some form of a “uniform”—typically khaki or blue bottoms and a white or blue collared top. “But what about creativity?”

I asked, pounding my fists into the table.

“What about self-expression and identity?

What if my child grows up only wanting to wear khaki pants and white polo shirts?”

For my child’s elementary years, she attended a school with no uniform policy.

Not all elementary schools in the county have one. So, in my earnestness to foster her creativity at age 4, I embraced her clothing choices. Want to wear plaid with those leopard print leggings? Sure! Layering a puffy skirt with jeans and a leotard top?

Why not?

At some point, her favorite outfit was a silky, quasi-see-through button-up shirt with cats playing on a white background, a cheetah-print tank top underneath and a different style of cheetah-print skinny jeans. On other days, she might break out the same pants with a rainbow tie-dyed shirt.

Around the same time, I read about Style Rookie, a blog started by the child fashion maven Tavi Gevinson. By age 11, her blog— mainly photos and her thoughts on the latest trends—had nearly 30,000 readers a day. Now, don’t get me wrong, my daughter’s favorite outfit was a statement, but not because of the cut of the pants or the silhouette of the shirt. For her, it had everything to do with how the clothes felt, not looked.

If we’re being perfectly honest, the morning ritual of picking out clothes always came with a certain amount of stress, as did shopping for school clothes every August.

At the end of the day, how much did her choice of outfit reflect who she was? And if she had a selection of khaki pants and skirts to wear instead of leopard-printed ones, would it change that?

Sometimes we as adults impose our preconceived notions onto our children before they even have a hint as to how we feel.

(Kind of like playing with Barbies—we as grown-ups think we’re instilling body image stereotypes into preschoolers; preschoolers just want to brush a doll’s hair and make her wear pants.) I’m sure there are kids who feel their clothing is an extension of who they are, and there are even court cases that challenge the ability of schools to limit children’s freedom of expression through their clothes. There’s some data that found

school discipline incidents rose about 12 percent after the introduction of school uniforms, through discriminatory and racist overtones in how the rules are applied.

Other accounts point to how girls, specifically girls of color, are unfairly targeted— often in relation to dress codes, though, not necessarily uniforms.

On the flip side, uniforms can be just that—unifying. For a school district such as Clarke County’s with a high rate of poverty among its students, uniforms can not only be less expensive than other clothes, but they also help level the playing field when it comes to style at school. Some studies even cite a feeling of “school pride” among students who wear uniforms—and that can elevate the overall school climate. They also create less drama when getting dressed in the morning, according to one national survey (which would be a bonus in my house).

Like the Barbie debate, I took a step back and thought about how much of my own ideas are forming my opinion, when it’s really not my opinion to have—it’s my child’s. And, I realized, if I could go back and do middle school all over again, would it have been better if I had to wear a uniform like everyone else? The memories that flashed through my head—of MC Hammer pants and stirrup pants and those shirts that changed color depending on your body heat—said a resounding yes.

Then I asked my daughter. We were hovering over a web page that had it all laid out—here are your shirts, here are your pants, here is a dress or two—and I wondered out loud: “What do you and your friends think of wearing uniforms?” She shrugged her shoulders. “Nah. It’s OK,” she said. And then, within five minutes, we completed our school shopping.

And the creativity part? Well, you probably had no idea how much fun you can have with socks, headbands, jewelry and reversible-sequin notebook organizers. I guess it just goes back to one of my favorite phrases: Know the rules, and then know how to break them. f

The move prompted criticism and worry from a number of manufacturers, but one industry’s concerns quickly bubbled to the top. The likes of Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors were quick to point out that the 25 percent tax on steel and 10 percent tax on aluminum imports would hurt brewers across the country.

But Herron isn’t so sure the tariffs will stop craft brewers in their tracks. “We deal with increases to our cost of ingredients pretty regularly across all kinds of items,

Creature Comforts CEO Chris Herron has already seen can prices go up this summer, “and that seems consistent with what we are hearing from other breweries,” he says.

“Any time we get increases to our raw materials, we are concerned.”

Craft brewers have increasingly turned to aluminum cans over bottles as the demand for craft beer and the need to distribute it more widely has grown. Most brewers do some amount of filling and packaging on site and purchase the cans from suppliers.

“We’re a manufacturer,” says Dustin Watts, president of Terrapin Beer Co. “The price of the pint at the bar, the price of the six-pack on the shelf doesn’t fluctuate to the consumer very much, and to the distributor it doesn’t fluctuate either, so the fluctuation is eaten by the manufacturer.”

Industry leaders predict tariffs may lead to job loss throughout the production chain. Writing for the Beer Institute, economic analyst John Dunham estimates that these tariffs may hike the cost of beer production by $350 million a year and put 20,000 jobs at risk.

Watts says cutting employees at Terrapin is possible, but unlikely. “If we opted to not price increase, then we have to reduce costs in some other fashion, and if it’s not going to be in raw materials, then it’s going to be in people, pencils and rulers,” he says, “but I don’t see us being in that type of position.

Herron doesn’t anticipate that the tariffs will impact Creature Comforts’ ability to operate, though it does have an impact on margins. Watts, too, doesn’t see the tariffs putting a halt to any of Terrapin’s current operations or future plans, but he knows the real question for Athens consumers is what they’re paying for local favorites.

“That’s the big concern, right?” he says.

“Everyone’s like, ‘Does this affect what I pay for beer?’”

If there is a price change, it would be small, says Watts. “It wouldn’t be like a sixpack goes from $9.99 to $15.99.” A 50-cent boost is more likely.

Industry advocates argue that an increase in the cost of these materials will result in more expensive beer, but Watts thinks it’s too early to tell what will happen. “With all the tariff pieces that are happening, there’s a good chance that the global state of beer, not just Terrapin or Creature or Southern [Brewing Co.], but all beers would see a price increase for the consumer,” he says. “But we’ll have to wait and see.”

Bottom line, Athens brewers are ready to roll with the punches. Herron says it’s just business as usual. “Things happen all the time across all aspects of the business that we have to react to, and this is not materially different than any number of challenges we face,” he says. “In comparison to the rapidly increasing price costs of hops or health insurance, this is relatively small.” f

ELVES IN EUROPE: Elf Power Reports From the Road

In advance of the band’s performance at Athens Popfest, which happens this week, Aug. 8–11, we invited frontman Andrew Rieger to share some reflections from the road. Keep turning these pages for lots more Popfest preview coverage.

We

had a wonderful, frenzied, exhausting European tour playing a bunch of cool festivals, club shows and even a Croatian sports arena! Here are some of the highlights: JULY 5–6: Egersund Festival—Egersund, Norway It took us around 35 hours to make it from Atlanta to Egersund, thanks to multiple flights, layovers and a lengthy delay due to a freak thunderstorm that caused the power to go out at the Toronto airport, delaying our flight by several hours.

The festival was amazing, with an enthusiastic crowd reviving our weary bodies enough to play a great set.

Right before our set, we were treated to a sublimely wonderful performance by Jonny, a band featuring Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub and Euros Childs of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci—two of my favorite songwriters! The afterparty, in a beautiful old barn on top of a hill, had some of the best fresh salmon and crab legs (not to mention great wine and beer) I’ve ever tasted!

We made it to Vienna for another awesome show in a small club with a great crowd and a delicious home-cooked meal of gnocchi, with copious glasses of Austria’s tasty Grüner Veltliner wine.

JULY 10: SRC Salata—Zagreb, Croatia This was a particularly special show for me, as my dad and grandparents are from Zagreb, and this was my first

After another exhausting handful of flights to Oslo, Copenhagen and Berlin, we met up with our driver/tour manager Tony, who drove us to another crazy festival called Creepy Teepee, in the beautiful Czech village of Kutna Hora, Elf Power at the Sedlec Ossuary in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic. just outside of Prague. Another great set on a beautiful outdoor stage in an ancient schoolyard. We were impressed time playing there. Additionally, it was in a large sports with performances by Faka, a queer African electronic duo arena opening for American band The National in front of whose darkly sinister sounding music was new to me, and a packed, several-thousand-strong stadium crowd of rowdy Calvin Johnson’s Selector Dub Narcotic, who both put on Croatians who were pumped up from Croatia doing so well great shows. in the World Cup. (This was the day before Croatia’s victory over England that led to their finals match against France.)

JULY 11–13: Travel/days off in Munich, Germany We got a much-needed break with a few days off spent relaxing in Munich and exploring the local beer halls, churches and cathedrals, before making another long drive to Amsterdam.

JULY 14: Paradiso—Amsterdam, Netherlands This was our third time playing at the world famous Paradiso, one of the best venues in Europe, open since the late 1960s. Another great show with some friends in attendance, with whom we strolled around the city’s lovely canals after the show.

JULY 15: Hafen 2—Offenbach, Germany We got up early, as we had to go back to the Paradiso to load up our gear from the night before. As we were finishing loading up, Americana legend Steve Earle unexpectedly walked up, and we had a lengthy chat with him. His bus had just arrived at the venue for his show after driving through the night. I reminded him of the time we ran into each other at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 15 years ago, after which he invited us to his show in Cleveland and we hung out together on his bus. Strange to run into him randomly again across the globe all these years later!

Another really cool and unique show in Offenbach, just outside of Frankfurt, at an outdoor community arts space with sheep wandering around, a restaurant and a cinema where people were watching the World Cup final. Once again, we had a great show and unwound afterwards with some friends, drinking delicious apple wine.

After the game, Trump’s interview in which he proclaimed the EU to be “one of America’s biggest foes” came on the TV and was a hot topic of conversation—much to our horror and chagrin! Everyone to whom I spoke in all parts of Europe considered Trump to be a dangerously inept buffoon, and they were truly incredulous that he was elected and continues to have supporters in America.

After the political discussion died down, we got some sleep in the cozy band trailer on the venue property and woke up at 6 a.m. to fly home. It was a great tour, worth all of the exhaustion and hectic travel required to make it happen. f

a teenager in Philadelphia, Joe Genaro dreamed up the character Joe Jack Talcum for the then-fake punk band that would soon practically change his name and consume his life.

“I was listening to lots of British Invasion stuff and Bob Dylan, and I envisioned the Jack Talcum character as a folk singer turned punk,” Genaro says.

“He wanted to front a punk band. It’s just an imaginary story. I made up the Dead Milkmen as the band he infiltrated with his brand of folk-punk.”

Home-recorded cassettes of songs about this pretend world gained enough momentum through fanzines to necessitate a live band.

Although the future Joe Jack Talcum, singer Rodney Anonymous and bassist Dave Blood almost balked at using a band name so similar to Dead Kennedys, drummer Dean Clean unknowingly twisted their arms into sticking with the original plan.

“Dean, our drummer, more or less insisted that we keep it, because he made the cow logo,” Genaro says. “He auditioned for us, and of course we said yes. He came to our first practice with ‘Dead Milkmen’ stenciled onto his drum cases. At that point, I thought we couldn’t make him cover that up.”

The ramshackle Dead Milkmen ascended to a record deal with Enigma within two years of their debut show. The group’s ’80s run needs no introduction, thanks to the staying power of several songs, namely “Punk Rock Girl.” Originally written by Genaro and Dave Blood for their Ornamental Wigwam side project, it became the best-known Dead Milkmen song sung by the real Joe Jack Talcum.

In the ’90s, two lesser-known yet solid Dead Milkmen albums issued by Disneyowned Hollywood Records featured more songs sung by Genaro than past releases, making them previews of future projects.

Among the better songs is “The Secret of Life,” an oddly gorgeous selection inspired by the Unarius cult’s campy film The Arrival.

It’s one of several Dead Milkmen songs, including old standby “Dean’s Dream,” that translates well to Joe Jack Talcum solo sets.

“What was happening at the time is Rodney started sending out for pamphlets and tracts from weird conspiracy people,” Genaro says. “He even had a video from a church that believed in UFOs. When we were reading all this stuff, it was the inspiration for the UFO theme. It also inspired ‘All Around the World,’ which is about a guy

who really thought he was implanted by the government.”

The Dead Milkmen went on hiatus in 1995, but Genaro continued recording and touring with other bands, including Butterfly Joe, Touch Me Zoo and The Low Budgets. In 2004, an opportunity for a oneoff solo gig became a long-term means to perform his large catalog of home-recorded songs, many of which had never been performed live.

Performing with just his guitar and harmonica, Genaro’s solo sets draw from his longtime interest in Dylan and the 1960s folk revival. It also helps that he used to sop up folk standards discovered by Alan Lomax through an unusual source: kids’ records.

“I remember very well from my very early record-listening days a kids’ version the song ‘Rock Island Line,’ which I guess is an old folk tune that became a skiffle tune as well in England,” he says. “I didn’t realize that until later on.”

Solo performances are simply billed as Joe Jack Talcum, a name Genaro adopted over time with the Dead Milkmen. He’s more or less stuck with the moniker now, as he’s been the embodiment of his traveling folk-punk singer longer than he was in the Dead Milkmen during its original 12-year run—or since the band’s 2008 return. f

Perpetual Motion FLAMINGO SHADOW FINDS ESCAPE IN EARTH MUSIC

with the semi-spastic lurch of “Black Cloud” and the jaunty pace of “Taxi” offer an escape from the existential horrors of everyday life in modern America—reality transformed by liberating and propulsive imagery.

“A lot of what we’re trying to do is channel the energy we’re feeling right now,” says singer, bass player and guitarist David Matysiak. “What the fuck are we doing? Why are we doing it? What is work?

What is time? With these songs, we were lucky enough to find these little islands we can go to, close our eyes and feel OK playing this music together.”

Earth Music also illustrates a profound undercurrent coursing through the band’s music. Adams and Matysiak, writing, improvising and performing alongside drummer Devin Brown, keyboard player and vocalist Katie Robertson and guitar and bass player Mason Brown, craft a sound that ebbs and flows with sophistication, driven by vibrant elements of indie pop

lamingo Shadow’s methodical and phoenix-like ascent has been something of a great adventure to watch unfold since the group first started playing together in 2015. On the heels of releasing its debut single, 2017’s “Vibe Control,” the Atlanta five-piece has left a glowing and pink-hued impression on the musical landscape, nodding to such timetested Athens staples as Pylon, the B-52s and Love Tractor.

The influence these old-school danceparty titans have come to bear on Flamingo Shadow is a philosophical one more than it is anything that can be clearly pointed out in the group’s aesthetic choices—although the solid 4/4 beats and motorik rhythms behind each number are an undeniable descendant of the Classic City’s promethean musical era.

In May, Flamingo Shadow released its first proper full-length, Earth Music, making good on the critical praise the group has received for its tropical post-punk flare, anchored by singer (and former Athenian) Madeline Adams’ rich vocal melodies and expressive range.

Throughout the album, the soaring atmosphere of songs such as “All Way Down” and “Riding the Wind” juxtaposed

and subtle feelings of paranoia, all kept in a state of perpetual motion.

“Themes of travel come up a lot when talking about our music, for sure, [and] so does the idea of fleeing,” says Matysiak.

“You can probably blame Trump for that one. If there’s a unifying theme at all, it’s that we write songs about earthly matters from an outsider’s perspective. That’s the one thing we always keep in mind from a jam and from performance standpoint.”

Matysiak and Brown have a decade-plus

of shared musical experiences. Since 2000, the two have played together in Athens and Atlanta bands Jet by Day, Rump Posse, Hollow Stars and Coyote Bones.

“With this band, we use everything we’ve learned along the way,” says Matysiak.

Flamingo Shadow’s dynamic comes to a fine point in the song “Taxi,” when Adams sings, “I’ve come to fear these machines/ Once our creation, they’re going to replace me.” But Earth Music is all about taking those feelings of negativity and channeling them into a positive experience. F

or about a quarter of a century, Man or Astro-man has regularly beamed down from the cosmos to deliver super-bitchin’ surf-punk performances in seedy nightclubs all over the world. Band spokesman Brian Teasley, aka Birdstuff, recalls it all as a blur of memories, but a specific sort sticks out: countless backstage dressing rooms with one or more graffiti penises on the wall.

“There’s always at least one, no matter what backstage you go into,” he says. “It’s almost impossible to be backstage in a club in America—or anywhere in the world— and not find a dick on the wall.”

Such a profound observation isn’t surprising coming from Teasley, who has a background as a comedy writer and music journalist in addition to playing drums for Man or Astro-man. He also appeared as a drummer on St. Vincent’s debut album, Marry Me, and a host of other side projects.

Now he’s the owner-operator of Saturn, a music venue in Birmingham, AL. He has time for that because, these days, Astro-man invades concert spaces only on worthy occasions. So, it’s fair to expect a brain-frying performance from the band’s Popfest performance.

In addition to using theremins and bizarrely modified guitars to create a range of otherworldly noises, the group often performs in space suits and and brings a Tesla coil on stage. Impressively, after playing in proximity to the coil’s static crackles, bursts and pops for about 20 years, Teasley has been shocked by the machine only once.

“It hit me in Atlanta this winter,” he says. “There’s a video of it. I have a drum on

my head, and it hits the drum and basically runs through my body. I was like, ‘Man, maybe our reflexes are getting slow in our old age,’ because I went a long time without being struck by lightning that we created.”

A drum on his head? That’s right: Astroman has a long history of acting funny.

In fact, frontman Brian Causey wrote and recorded the theme song for the TV series “The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius,” and the band has longstanding ties to the creators of the comedy series “Mystery Science Theater 3000.”

Unsurprisingly, the group’s vast catalog is as goofy as it is rocking.

“We started around the time that alternative rock was just entering the fray, and people were taking themselves way too seriously, in kind of a Pearl Jam-y kind of way, I guess,” Teasley says. “In a lot of ways, we were more influenced by the things we hate than the things we like. We knew we didn’t want to be current, modern, vogue, serious, respected or highminded. We just wanted to have fun and take the piss out of people a little bit.”

Even so, the band used to rank among the hardest-working in the music business, recording something like 20 albums, EPs and B-side collections between 1993–2001, on top of playing up to 300 shows a year.

“We probably toured more than any band in the ’90s, and we played more shows in more countries than our brains could handle,” Teasley says. “Now, we’re getting back to the concept of being a high-school garage band, where we just do it for fun.

It lets all of the pressure off, to not have deadlines and depend on [music] to make a living. You wish for that to happen when you’re young, and then it happens, and your music career becomes kind of a job.

“We’re getting closer to Square One the longer we go on,” he sums up. “It’s kind of like the rock and roll version of Benjamin Button.” f

After a decade-long hiatus, Brooklyn, NY band The Essex Green has returned to the fold with a new album, Hardly Electronic, on Merge Records. The power-pop group boasts a long-distance Elephant 6 membership and even released its first full-length on Athens’ Kindercore Records, which should give enough hints as to the type of playful yet poignant ditties it’s capable of crafting. Despite the years, Hardly Electronic finds the band picking up just where it left off and even taking a few steps forward.

New Zealand-born, New York-based singer-songwriter Dean Wareham has founded two highly influential indie-rock acts—Galaxie 500, whose airy slowcore inspired a generation of like-minded (and generally lesser-talented) acts, and Luna, the immaculate dream-pop outfit that returned last year with an album of covers and a bonus set of new instrumentals.

Wareham, who also moonlights as an actor and film composer, hits Popfest by his lonesome to play tunes from his bands’ back catalogs, as well as his self-titled 2014 solo album. [Gabe Vodicka]

Washington, DC has catapulted a number of punk acts to national underground prominence in recent years, which isn’t totally surprising given its history of foundational Dischord artists in the ’80s—and, you know, that dude who’s our current president. From the same scene that propped up Downtown Boys and Priests comes Flasher, a slightly more danceable postpunk group that flashes a new-wave smirk every once in a while. The band’s debut fulllength, Constant Image, has been turning critics’ heads since its release in June, so get it while the gettin’s good. [AB]

It’s named Tour Tape, most likely because Potter’s just too busy to sit around thinking of titles for things. It features three tracks of him and his guitar and a slew of effects.

It’s the kind of thing that requires you either hear it live in person or listen alone with headphones, because otherwise you’re gonna miss a lot of what’s going on. Especially impressive is how the entire midsection of opening track “Silver Streak” sounds like a string suite. At least, I was

NAPTIME: Athens singer-songwriter Ryan Wright makes music under the name Siesta Forte, and has thus far released one song, “In My Blood.” It runs about four minutes, and is pretty straightforward with its mid-tempo guitar, bass and drums arrangement. I listened to it about four times in a row, because even through all the reverb the guitar has on it, there was this little nugget of musical information that seemed to come around every few bars. It took a few really close listens, and now I can tell you assuredly that what I was hearing was the end-of-bar flourish from The Rolling Stones’ “Beast of Burden.” Listen for yourself at siestaforte.bandcamp.com.

NOW HEAR THIS: The Pink Stones just released a live recording from their show at Flicker Theatre & Bar on July 25 and it named Live at Flicker 7/25/18, because, I mean, why not?

It was recorded directly to cassette tape by Adam Wayton.

It opens with a fine version of Townes Van Zandt’s “I’ll Be Here in the Morning.” After this, the band goes through some originals that I couldn’t identify right off the bat, but honestly, if you dig classic Dylan, Young or the aforementioned Van Zandt, this should fit right in. Notable pop nods include the group’s original “Blueberry Dream” and a kind of strained cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Candy Says.”

Thoroughly Modern Millie Winder-Barrow Community Theatre presents the madcap, extravagant musical based on the 1967 movie that starred Julie Andrews as Millie, a small-town girl heading to the big city and trying to find her Mr. Right—preferably a rich one. Sutton Foster played the lead in the Broadway adaptation, which Charles Isherwood of Variety found to be an improvement over the film version, of which he was no fan. The “coy and convoluted romantic farce” offers old-fashioned Broadway pleasures, he wrote: “tapping feet, glitzy sets and costumes, happily ever-afters and smiles for days… in abundance.”

That small-town girl (Allie Hill) goes to the big city in the Roaring Twenties, planning to get a secretary job so she can snag a rich husband. But the hot boss she works for

(Joe Allen) falls for her classy friend (Carie Ehling) instead, while gold-digging Millie finds herself attracted to a penniless manabout-town (Devon Kelsey) despite her plans. There are mysterious disappearances back at their ladies’ boarding house, a glamorous supper club, a kidnapping ring run by dumb, offensive criminals and plenty of dance scenes. Directed by Elinor Hasty, with a large cast ready to bring all the big numbers to life, it’s a show that gives you the chance to get away from it all with a laugh and a song.

The Servant of Two Masters Town & Gown Players’ wild, ridiculous, 18th Century farce rooted in commedia dell’arte combines all the silly of the past 300 years with a 21st Century sense of humor. It’s a story of rival suitors (Andrew Rabanal and Sarah Adams), one of whom is the cash-seeking sister of the late suitor she is impersonating; frustrated fathers (Stephen Ingle and John Olive); a romantic, weepy daughter (Mandy Riley); and a foodie servant (Patrick Najjar) so obsessed with where he’s getting his next meal that he tries doubling his intake by serving two masters at once. He finds a love interest of his own (Kat Marie Mitchell) amidst his dream and nightmare rolled into one: organizing two lavish banquets at once.

It’s all deliberately confusing, which is exactly how it should be. Directed by Mike Smith, this cast combines seasoned thespians and T&G newcomers with regular favorites, promising a fun escape from the unfunny ridiculousness in the world.

THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME (R) The Spy Who Dumped Me may be disposable summer fun, but it is better reserved for a rainy day of channel surfing when Mission: Impossible— Fallout is available theatrically. Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon generate a pleasant, friendly frisson and more than a few laughs as Audrey, an aging slacker whose hot boyfriend, Drew (Justin Theroux), just broke up with her, and her eccentric best friend, Morgan. All breakups are hell, but hell actually breaks loose when the duo discovers Drew was a spy before embarking on a deadly European adventure to protect a typical MacGuffin that will save the world from generic terrorists.

Melissa McCarthy’s superior piece of comic spycraft, Spy, starred a woman while using her appearance to comment on how society underestimates an individual’s merit based on looks (and gender); The Spy Who Dumped Me is a simple action-comedy that shows that pretty, funny ladies can do everything that pretty, funny boys can do.

Let Your Loved Ones Help ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

My vision for this back-to-school article was fairly typical: Talk about the calmness of student-free summers, pool parties, dancing, swimming and making out, then transition into a positive outlook on the upcoming semester with a healthy warning about the bar scene, game-day culture and consent. Now that I’m in front of the page, that’s not what’s coming up for me at all.

The fact is that I had a terrible summer.

I’ve been unemployed since the end of April. It was abrupt and unexpected. On May 1, I was sitting in my brand new apartment with tons of free time and no idea how I was gonna pay for anything.

I tried to be positive about it. The last time I had a summer off was when I was in college, and getting unemployment benefits only took a couple of weeks for me to lock down. I was

bummed, but I had my summer wardrobe, some savings and government money coming in to tide me over until my new gig eventually happened in a manner of weeks. A month, at most.

Well, I’m still unemployed, except for this weekly column (and I’m very thankful to still have this space and the attention of my community). I received my last weekly unemployment benefit today, and I only have $80 left after rent and bills each month. I’ve applied for 50 jobs since losing mine and have had only three interviews, a result that actually falls in line with national statistics. I’m usually too broke to do anything, but I only really “go out” for weekday happy hours when I know I won’t see people who will ask me how my new job is going.

It’s hard to notice good things or be thankful when we’re struggling with other stuff, but I think I need to be more mindful of what’s going well for me, lest the negativity drag me into darker places than I’d like to share publicly.

This summer, I discovered a great BBC show called “Time Team” that I can’t stop

watching, and I’ve fallen in love with the entire cast. I sometimes imagine that life will get better, and I’ll accomplish my dreams of going to grad school and traveling outside of the U.S. It’s kind of silly to daydream about drinking pints with strangers, but it’s a welcome reprieve from pacing my empty apartment day after day and watching my phone, doubting my past, fearing my future and questioning my value in this world.

Maybe you are also struggling to remain positive and optimistic. I hope you are as lucky as I am, because I have family and friends who will be optimistic for me. It is the support of my loved ones that keeps me from truly believing that there is no future, the closest I’ll ever get to the cliffs of Dover is in my dreams, and all hope is lost.

For instance, I can’t afford the food I’m used to, so

I just shove veggies and protein at my face as needed. But I can dream of my mom’s barbecue ribs and mac and cheese, and she will say to me, “I’ll give you the recipe.” When I respond that I can’t afford to buy the goods to prepare her food, she says, “You will soon. It’s gonna be OK.” Bless her beautiful heart. How can she say that in a world like this one? How can anyone? I don’t know where she gets her optimism, but she loves to share it with me, and dammit, I’ll take it. She says she’s already thanked her God for my future job, and to that I say, this God better not have my mama out here looking like a fool.

Be optimistic if you can, and if you can’t, seek out optimism from those who love you. (Someone does love you.) My optimism and will to live are currently on loan from my mother and my sister. I keep real love close enough to catch me when I fall, and you should, too. f Need advice? She’s a citizen and maybe a small-business owner. He’s a citizen and a journalist. If they ran into each other on an airplane, they might talk about their children or their gardens, but they live in Trump World. She’s the base. He’s the press.

She’s a redneck. He’s a fake. They are pitted against each other. They are enemies.

Tom Crawford at Manuel’s Tavern. Tom, as you know, operated his own news service covering the state Capitol and writing his weekly Georgia Report, which Flagpole published for the last 12 years until his declining health forced Tom to give it up.

Tom, as Doug and others reminded us in heartfelt eulogies, was super-smart, hardworking and conscientious, but he always had time for friends, and he had a lot of them. Whenever he was in Athens, he got together with us and always wanted to know what was happening over here, asking for specifics, asking how Flagpole is doing. He had that love of stories that all journalists seem to share. At Manuel’s that night, the whole back room was filled with journalists, and many of them had worked alongside Tom and had shared the late nights, the deadlines, the pressure to get it right and get it on time, after a late meeting or a late game or other late-breaking news.

One thing about Tom I had never understood was how he could work right there in the Capitol, frequently writing harsh critiques of powerful people he passed in the hall every day, and not get kicked out or at least kicked. I realized at Manuel’s that Tom in the Capitol was basically like a hometown newspaper editor. Everybody knew him and respected him, even if they didn’t like what he wrote that week. He was the press, but he was also Tom. I do not believe that Donald Trump or even his mimic, Brian Kemp, could convince the mostly

I know that lady. I grew up with people like her. I’d probably feel more comfortable with her than I would with Jim Acosta, but I’d probably feel OK with him, too, since he’s a journalist.

I was pondering all this when I wandered into Junk in the Trunk, the emporium filled with recycled treasures collected by people like our friends Florence King and Ginger Davis-Beck. It’s across from the post office out on Olympic Drive, and it’s where I found a hardback, first edition copy of Lewis Grizzard’s If I Ever Get Back to Georgia, I’m Gonna Nail My Feet to the Ground in perfect, unread condition complete with an unblemished book jacket for $6. Grizzard is usually too good-ole-boy for my tastes, but this one chronicles his life in journalism, which began when he wrote sports for the old Athens Daily News, working his way (almost) through UGA back in the ’60s and then on to The Atlanta Journal.

I guarantee you that the lady with the bird would have loved Lewis Grizzard, even though he was the press. Grizzard—like Tom Crawford and all journalists, like Homer on the windswept plains of Troy, like the kid in J-school interviewing her first county commissioner—take seriously their duty to get the facts and report them to you, so that you can know what’s going on. The press is not the enemy. Attacks by the president, his minions, his mobs and his mimics can’t change the fact that the press is the people. f
