“He was about as careful and prudent and visible a rider as you could imagine,” said Tyler Dewey, executive director of the advocacy group BikeAthens. “The fact that the crash happened, struck from behind, it’s a reminder that we have to provide safe, protected places for people to ride their bikes. These street designs have real stakes.

People can get really hurt. So we have to decide if we want the fleeting, illusory convenience of being able to get somewhere a few seconds faster, or if we want lasting safety improvements.”

Dewey made those comments at last week’s Athens-Clarke County Commission agenda-setting meeting, where commissioners were debating bike infrastructure in Boulevard and on the Eastside.

In other business: • Sewer work around Lumpkin and Baxter streets is done, and as a planned repaving project gets underway, ACC and the University of Georgia are tweaking the intersection to accommodate the increased pedestrian traffic from the business-school buildings under construction there. UGA will be paying for most of the work, other than the repaving itself.

• ACC is set to award a contract next month to build a $2.4 million roundabout at South Milledge Avenue and Whitehall Road as part of SPLOST 2011.

• A decade in the works, an expansion of the ACC landfill onto land in Oglethorpe County is about to get underway. They’re cutting it close: The current landfill is expected to fill up by next August, and construction will take about a year.

• The commission’s Government Operations Committee has suggested some changes to the way the commission accepts public input, including requiring speakers to fill out comment cards beforehand so their correct name spellings can be recorded.

The committee has also recommended limiting commissioners’ comments at agenda-setting meetings to three five-minute opportunities to speak on each item, the same as at voting meetings. • The Legislative Review Committee has recommended against passing a more restrictive youth curfew requested by the local chapter of the NAACP. Committee members said they don’t see a need for it.

• TPW is asking for permission to install a red-light camera at the intersection of U.S. Highway 29 and Hull Road, which sees an average of nearly four crashes a year as a result of drivers running red lights. It would join cameras at the West Broad Street-Alps Road-Hawthorne Avenue and Barnett Shoals-Gaines School Road intersections. Police issue $70 tickets to violators caught by the $300,000 cameras, but they’re hardly moneymakers; they’re intended to be a deterrent. And they work—there hasn’t been a red-light crash at the Broad-Alps-Hawthorne intersection in the past three years.

• The Classic Center is taking out a $1.3 million loan to hire a consultant to implement energy-saving measures like installing LED lights and replacing old equipment with more energy-efficient versions, reducing annual energy expenses by about $82,000–$124,000 a year over 15 years. Under state law, the cost savings are guaranteed—if the consultant doesn’t find enough ways to cover the cost, it eats the difference, but if the Classic Center saves more, it keeps the money. “It’s a guaranteed saving program, and one we all think will make a big difference going forward,” Classic Center Executive Director Paul Cramer said.

National EMS Sold National EMS—the contractor that provides ambulance service for hospitals in Clarke and Oconee counties—has been sold to Knoxville, TN-based Priority Ambulance, the companies announced last week.

Priority is much larger than Conyersbased National, with 2,600 employees, and consolidation is the name of the game in health care as all the players seek greater resources and leverage. Insurance companies keep merging. Smaller hospital chains seek refuge with bigger ones.

The sale comes at a time, though, when National EMS is under fire for what former EMTs and the activist group Athens for Everyone say are unacceptably slow response times. They’ve called for an independent audit and for National EMS to release its raw data. St. Mary’s and Piedmont Athens Regional, though, recently released a joint statement expressing satisfaction with National EMS. It’s unlikely that anything will change, at least for now. Frye, who also represents part of Athens in the state House of Representatives, has traveled around the state this year with the Georgia House Rural Development Council looking at affordable housing issues and solutions. “Trying to address jobs and health care in rural areas is great, but nobody has a place to live that they can afford,” he says. “The foundation has to be solid before you can build a house, and that’s true for the rest of your life, which I see over and over again in the work I do locally.”

State legislators will likely issue an affordable housing policy this fall, and Frye hopes Athens will follow suit. He and colleagues are holding onto the winning designs until then.

“It’ll be interesting to see how we can take pieces of

Go Off-Road WHERE TO MOUNTAIN BIKE IN AND AROUND ATHENS

By Dan Jackson news@flagpole.com Sometimes the best day trip is a deep plunge into green wilderness, coaxed along winding trails into leafy woods with an agile bicycle underneath you. As members of bike groups like SORBA (Southern OffRoad Bicycle Association) develop and maintain more unpaved bike trails through local parks and designate them for beginner, intermediate or advanced riders, more cyclists are taking on the sport. This week, Day Tripper will suggest three trail facilities for all levels of skill.

GETTING STARTED: Local cycling retailers say their mountain-bike business has taken off in the last few years, thanks to the abundance of local trails. “The last three or COURTESY OF SUNSHINE CYCLES

four years have been off-the-charts good,” says Jimmy Marbut, owner of Sunshine Cycles. Brian Molloy, owner of The Hub, also reports big increases in sales and adds that “families with kids” are joining in and bringing the sport to a new audience.

The sport’s surge in appeal seems to come from its flexibility. A ride can range from a pleasant afternoon at the park for families to a high-octane workout, satisfying everyone from easygoing beginners to pumped extreme sports enthusiasts who want to “catch air” as they fly over the bumps and dips common to most trails.

Mountain biking requires the participation of enthusiast groups to create and maintain trails, and SORBA-Athens (sorbaathens.org) is the main local organizer of the sport. Its website offers information about trails, group rides, “workdays” and other events for enthusiasts.

A good point of entry for mountain-biking beginners is a “pump track,” a short trail with typical features like “dirt jumps” and “rollers,” or big piles of compacted dirt that emulate what riders will encounter on trails. The closest pump track currently is at Pittard Park in Winterville. Seth Younger, president of SORBA-Athens, says the pump track is popular with “anyone who wants to build their mountain biking skills,”

including the young members of “Little Rippers Athens,” a closed Facebook group for kids under middle-school age.

Most enthusiasts suggest that newcomers to the sport get their bikes adjusted to fit their bodies. Molloy suggests adjusting the saddle to create a 25–30-degree angle at the knee at the down stroke. Saddle setback—the distance from handlebars to the saddle—is another important way to adjust your bicycle to fit your own frame.

THE TRAILS: Only two miles from downtown Athens and located inside the Loop off North Peter Street, the SORBA-built trails at Trail Creek Park are by far the most convenient for Athens cyclists. Jason Hubbard, a coach with the National Interscholastic Cycling Association and a UGA horticulturist, calls Trail Creek Park “a great beginner or intermediate trail, just long enough to be a challenge.”

The well-marked trail names are a nod to the Athens music scene, with “Drive-By Truckers” for intermediate riders and “Orange Crush” for beginners.

“Widespread” and “Panic” are technically challenging, “jumpy” downhill runs strictly for advanced riders, with sweeping, curving berms. Younger says there has been talk of creating a pump track at Trail Creek Park, as well.

About 25 miles west of Athens is the popular Fort Yargo State Park, with its miles of trails, campsites, picnic areas and a 260-acre lake with a sandy beach for swimming. Athens outdoors enthusiast Allen Jones likes the scenic nature of its trails.

“There is an easy trail with great views that often skirts the lake, and a much longer trail that takes you through the woods with a number of hills to get your blood pumping,” he says. “The longer route also has challenging optional detours if you want a more vigorous workout and more technical challenges.”

Near Lake Hartwell, about 50 miles northeast of Athens, SORBA created the Paynes Creek Trail, a nine-mile single-track loop that it calls “fast and flowy.”

Some cycle groups like to set up camp at the nearby Paynes Creek Campground and spend the entire weekend, taking in the trail and all that Lake Hartwell has to offer.

After a sweaty ride, many cyclists will kick back at The Royal Peasant on Lumpkin Street in Five Points, which has become an unofficial mountain-biking bar. It’s especially popular after the regular rides organized by The Hub, which is located nearby on Milledge Avenue. f

In the earlier stages, everyone was still at UGA, so it was a lot easier to get everyone together, but as everyone has been graduating and going their separate ways, we need to schedule way ahead of time. This year, nine-piece improv-fusion group Misnomer (formerly Mister Tie Dye) took home both Artist and Album of the Year (for Neighborhood), in addition to opening the show with a standout performance. The Upstart trophy went to dream-pop/psych-rock outfit Calico Vision, which made a splash in its first year with a series of memorable live performances involving creative outfits, masks, bubble machines and other ephemera.

In the spirit of celebration and conversation, we invited both groups to Flagpole HQ to chat about Athens music. For 90 minutes, the bands discussed their writing processes, live show struggles, AthFest experiences and much more. Below, we’ve gathered a series of highlights. making money. Also, while it’s happening more recently, there is a need for even more mixed-genre shows. Mixing rap, rock, funk, etc. Doing shows like that exposes everyone’s music to a wider audience. It’s a mystery why more people don’t do it.

Scene Support M: We’ve been lucky, being involved in Redcoats and the UGA music program—we get tons of people who want to come out and see us from that inherent support system.

From that base, it trickled out to the rest of the Athens community. Over the past two years, we’ve seen the type of crowds at our shows drastically change. That’s one of the things that’s really cool about our shows—it’s a good mix of UGA School of Music people and people who are more involved in the independent scene.

CV: It used to seem like local artists were segmented more either by genre or aesthetic. Like, it would be, “Oh, that’s a townie band,” or “That’s a jam band,” and they would be on separate shows. Now, there’s been more of an effort to blend everything and support each other without focusing on specific genres—you just listen what you want to listen to. There’s less emphasis on putting a label on a band.

CV (BB): I moved here not knowing anyone and started my first band through a Craigslist ad. Then I started emailing venues and getting shows just like that. After a while, people started coming out—we weren’t very good, so not that many people—but eventually, we got better and things worked out. I feel like if you’re talented enough to get people who see you want to see you again and are willing to talk to venues and other bands, you have a support system here.

What’s Next?

CV: We’ve released four songs, three of which we recorded and produced ourselves.

So, we’ve just been releasing singles, and eventually we’re gonna compile all of our releases into a full album. We’re doing everything ourselves right now out of our own DIY studio. We want to tour, but right now we’re gonna focus on venturing out to other locations around the Southeast on the weekends—get our name out there a little more.

M: We kind of just got over the hump of a lot of stuff. We just got done with a tour at the beginning of June. We’ve got some festival and show dates coming up. We also have a collab we’re working on with Linqua Franqa. We have at least one song for that project completely finished, but we’re not sure where it’s gonna end up or when it will see the light of day. f

WIPE THE WINDOWS, CHECK THE OIL: Bo Bedingfield will release his first solo record Saturday, July 28 at the Caledonia Lounge.

It’ll be a full-band performance from Bedingfield’s The Wydelles and should include some new Wydelles material, to boot. Also on the bill are The Lanes and Daniel Markham. Anyway, this new record is named Dread and Crush, and it runs a tasteful eight tracks. True to both its name and the Bedingfield songwriting tradition, the album is a diary of sunset gloom, heavy sighing and more than a touch of ennui.

That said, it’s also wonderfully tuneful and softly rendered. The high point for me is

of a jumble of styles including, to varying degrees, grime, glitch, garage, acid, happy hardcore and dub. It’s all a real punch in the face, and not particularly uplifting in any way. It is, however, a hell of a great escape, so if that’s your jam, shove the music at quicksilverslivers.bandcamp.com into your ears as quickly as possible.

A TRIBUTE: The Athens chapter of Disabled American Veterans and the Morton Theatre will present “Singing for Our Soldiers: A Theatrical Gospel Tribute” Saturday, July 28 from 3–5 p.m. This is an afternoon of gospel music featuring several artists

Help me settle a debate among friends: If you’re someone who is more interested in a longish-term commitment than casual, no-strings-attached situations, when is it OK to date more than one person at a time?

For instance, after almost a year of blissful singledom, I met loverboy No. 1, and a week or two later, No. 2 sashayed into my life. (Both have the same first name, so here we default to the numbers system.) I like both for different reasons. If I stop seeing Bae No. 1, I know Bae No. 2 will be very interested in going “all in” with me basically right away, whereas if I choose No. 1, things would be more delicate in terms of each of us committing to the other.

Neither knows of the other’s existence in my love life. How long do I have until this blows up in my face? Am I being a dick by managing these relationships the way I am? I think about the golden rule, and I know how I’d feel if I were one of these guys.

The real difference between dating and relationships is communication and our level of commitment to one another. My opinion is that when you’re dating someone, that means you’re spending time together in a mostly sexual way while still including genuine moments of bonding and discovery. (To be clear, that I don’t believe that all dates should end with sex, but two people in the casual stages of dating are usually feeling each other out for what kind of permanence they can get from each other.)

A relationship happens when two people who are dating decide to date only each other, and that’s when conversations about stuff like couples’ STD testing or future life plans come into play. People who are dating don’t share their lives with their partners on the level that committed people do, and often that includes information on whom else they might be dating.

It’s always OK to date more than one person at one time, as long as you’re just dating those people. You know, meeting up for a movie night that turns into sex

and then a trip to the bar right at last call.

What kind of dates are you going on with these guys? If you are bringing these people around your co-workers or family—sharing friends with whom they bond outside of your casual relationship—then that is way more intimate than dating and could blow up in your face very badly.

If you’re monogamous but still want to date more than one person, the most important thing is to keep those people completely separate from one another. They should not be from the same social scene or have an ex in common—anything like that.

They should not know each other at all, really. Jealousy and territorialism are real.

That said, I hope you’ve had some sort of conversation with these guys letting them know what you’re about right now. I believe that you should always assume that whoever you’re dating is also dating someone else, but most

of us don’t, and feelings often get hurt that way. You don’t have to say, “I’m sleeping with other people,” but at some point you should have made it clear to both of them that no one is committed to anyone here. Full transparency and informed consent are your best tools in this situation, friend.

I can see that you don’t want to be responsible for any broken hearts, but I can also see that you date monogamously for the most part, and you’re gonna have to let someone down eventually. Bae No. 1 sounds like he’s good in bed but commitment-phobic, but Bae No. 2 seems like someone you actually want to date. You also sound old enough to know that two people can’t build anything real around a strictly sexual bond, so stop letting Bae No. 1 dickmatize you with his prowess, and ask yourself what you really want. Taqueria Mundos’ World of Flavor PLUS, HAWAIIAN SHAVE ICE FROM A TRUCK

UPGRADE: It might appear at first glance that very little has changed in the transition from the building at 675 Danielsville Road from Las Monarcas, a Mexican restaurant, to Taqueria Mundos (706-850-3235), a different Mexican restaurant. Sure, the sign no longer features butterflies and instead portrays a big spit of hot meat and a cheerful anthropomorphized crunchy taco wearing a sombrero, but the interior decor is virtually identical.

The menu, however, is not, and the change is a dramatic improvement. On regular days, you can pick from various meat-delivery systems, including Mexican-style tacos and large, flat, jam-packed tortas (the fillings beat the bread, which doesn’t quite cut it). It’s a focused menu, without much in the way of filler, and the atmosphere in the former Huddle House is warm and cozy, as it generally has been.

The real game-changer, though, is the buffet that Taqueria Mundos puts out on Sundays. Priced at $12.99 for all you can eat (free for kids under 10, at least for the moment), it is wonderfully rich in choices, featuring plenty of surprises and high quality throughout. The Huddle House counter is put to excellent use, from three salsas and various taco fixings at one end (a smoky chipotle, a creamy green sauce, a hot orange habanero, cilantro, onions, radishes) and conTaqueria Mundos cluding with handmade corn tortillas in a cooler at the other (a little too thick).

In between you will find: a fresh, chunky guacamole with tomatoes and onions; mainstream choices for the picky and/or young, like a bin of cheese quesadillas, Mexican rice, french fries, hot wings, good chicken enchiladas with green sauce and fajita-style sliced beef with onions and peppers; good, spicy charros beans, with chunks of jalapeño and hot dog; pozole made with a pork that is probably a touch too lean but with a fantastic, deeply flavored broth; excellent pork ribs flecked with pepper in a tomatillo-based sauce, a dish from Puebla; ham steaks cooked with a tinga-style

case adds pineapple. I took plenty of notes, but it’s absolutely possible I missed some items.

If you still have room (note: save room), there is a separate table for sweets placed down at the far end. Platters piled high with cubed honeydew and watermelon can provide a light, refreshing conclusion to your meal; a cute, colorful dispenser has a delicate watermelon agua fresca; slices of flan with fruit sit on a three-tiered stand; and there are two cakes, both from Doña Rosy’s down the street: a rectangular super-moist chocolate tres leches with a vanilla

COOL: If you’re still looking for new places to cool down with something sweet (and who isn’t?), the Hokulia Shave Ice truck is a charming addition to Athens. Stationed for now at 1225 College Station Road—in the parking lot of the Church at College Station—six days a week, it shaves fluffy ice from large blocks, packs it into cute plastic cups shaped like flowers (three sizes) and tops it with a large variety of syrups, all of which are nicely flavored, even ones that are normally disgusting, like cotton candy.

Much, much better than the usual snocone because of the consistency of the ice, which immediately starts returning to water, it can also include a scoop of ice cream (e.g., vanilla, macadamia nut, pineapple) in the middle, which makes it richer.

Various other add-ons include sour spray (popular with kids), li hing mui powder (salty dried plum), coconut flakes and sno-cap (a sort of creamy drizzle).

Syrups range from lime and peach to boysenberry, guava, lychee, horchata, wedding cake, cream soda and pomegranate. Several named combinations are a smart move if you have a hard time making decisions, but it almost doesn’t seem to matter what you choose for flavors—not because they’re indistinct from one another, but because the consistency of the base works with anything.

With Hawaiian music playing and some tables set up, the atmosphere is surprisingly pleasant and relaxing in the parking lot, where the truck is generally open until 9 p.m. It also migrates to special events and catering gigs. A second location is slated for Baxter Street, and a third will follow. You can find locations and hours on Facebook.

Caledonia Lounge · 9:30 p.m. · $5–7 After Athens band Reptar went on indefinite hiatus a few years back, two of its members, Andrew McFarland and Ryan Engelberger, branched off as Semicircle and released a stunner of an LP in 2014’s Blown Breeze, Grown Grass and We Are Part of the Earth. Now, Engelberger has embarked on another creative path as Curt Castle, which celebrates the release of its first recorded material—a 7-inch single—Friday. The lead track, “Afraid of the Lightning,” is a punchy pop tune that should please fans of ’70s soft-rock stans like Stephen Steinbrink. The B-side, “Across State Lines (Supernova),” is a Casio-hued slowburner that bodes well for the inevitable upcoming full-length. [Gabe Vodicka]

Flicker Theatre & Bar · 7 p.m. · $7–10 (suggested) Experimental guitarist Eugene Chadbourne has amassed an eye-popping resume that spans several decades and includes stints working in tandem with avant-garde giants like John Zorn, Elliott Sharp and Henry Kaiser. He’s also no stranger to the world of popular music, having collaborated with Camper Van Beethoven and covered Nick Drake. In the 1980s, “Doc” Chadbourne gained notoriety in the thriving New York City noise scene for fronting Shockabilly, which imparted a free-form sensibility to various country and rockabilly classics.

Downtown record shop Low Yo Yo Stuff brings the tireless, ageless composer to Athens on Saturday for an early-evening solo gig. [GV]

“Trail Blossoms” is the latest public art project spearheaded by the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission in collaboration with the Athens-Clarke County Public Art Master Plan, SPLOST and a citizens group.

The unveiling party features frozen treats from the Lil’ Ice Cream Dude and music by local hip-hop artist Seline Haze, and will be followed with a post-party joyride led by Bike Athens.

1996: Trio Contemporary Art Gallery will host an opening reception for the new group exhibition “1996” on Friday from

7–9 p.m. Co-curated by Maggie Seee and Tatiana Veneruso, the show pays tribute to the bygone era of frosted tips, Beanie Babies and glitter gel pens. Seee, who was nine years old in 1996, recalls it as a memorable year on a personal level, because her mother married her stepfather, she went to camp at Athens Creative Theater, and she saw soccer during the Olympics.

“We were balancing the fashion choices

of Barbies with wanting to watch Clueless like the older girls. Torn between wanting to wear flare jeans and eye glitter like the Spice Girls, and Umbros and soccer cleats like Mia Hamm,” says Seee, sharing memories of her childhood best friend. “It just feels like a pure time when I look back.

When the idea hit me, my oldest daughter was also 9. She’s about to turn 10 in August, and it feels like I simultaneously can’t slow time down or speed it up enough for her.”

For “1996,” Seee will display a portrait of an alien girl—a character who has recurred throughout her artwork since around 1996—sporting a jean vest, Blossom hat and Tamagotchi in hand. Works by roughly 20 artists will be included, like Jennie Cain, Raoul de la Cruz, Dan Litzinger, Jennifer Niswonger-Morris, Triplebummer and Vivienne Varay. “1996” will be on view through Sept. 15.

As an Artist in Residence, the printmaker has spent the summer developing a full body of work using the center’s studios as a workspace.

During the reception, attendees are invited to check out his latest creations, which experiment with shape, color relationships and various relief processes that add layers and depth to large-format works on paper.

Hitselberger is the third artist who has been selected for the AIR program, following Zane Cochran and David Hale. His residency is supported by a faculty development grant from Piedmont College in Demorest, where he works as an associate professor of arts. In addition to his passion for printmaking, he received an MFA in painting from UGA in 2010. f

Sure, well-informed horror fans know Zachary Donohue got here first with 2013’s underrated The Den, but Donohue did not have the backing of horror power Blumhouse behind him to guarantee the wide release his film unfairly never had.

Written and directed by The Grudge’s Stephen Susco, Dark Web starts on the desktop of Matias O’Brien (Colin Woodell), who soon joins his friends for a virtual game night. Too bad Matias got his new computer from the lost and found at his local cybercafé. Its previous owner is a bad dude who kidnaps young women for profit, selling videos of their torture and demise for bitcoins. Now, Matias, his deaf girlfriend (Stephanie Nogueras) and five best pals are in real-life danger if the hooded killer does not get his laptop back.

As already mentioned, Dark Web breaks no new ground but is a serviceable modern techno-slasher. Still, the movie will watch just as well streaming on your monitor in a few months, when you may want to keep glancing over your shoulder at the bedroom door, even if you do know better. It should also be noted that the movie has apparently been released to theaters with two endings, so if you hate how it ends, you must have seen the version I did not. f

Vampire or Zombie?

THAT’S REALLY WHAT ‘MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN’ IS ALL ABOUT

By Pete McCommons editor@flagpole.com All over America, newsrooms are growing dark or dim, as newspapers fold or are bought out by venture capitalists, who lay off staff and suck out assets until the papers are left to struggle along in a cruel approximation of the in-depth information sources they used to be. Those newsrooms once included editors, who sat down to compose columns reflecting on the news and attempting to put it into some kind of perspective, based on their own experience and observations. Many of those editors are now gone. Others remain, but in their

illusion that some day, if we worked hard and kept our mouths shut, just maybe we could be dancing in the penthouse.

Now, we’re zombies. And what are zombies? People who are dead and don’t know it. People life has passed by, whose juices have dried up, leaving them to lurch along unknowing, undead, their jobs obsolete, lives over, chances nil, tuxes splattered with blood, gowns in tatters, incapable of dancing should they ever stumble into the penthouse, only to be thrown out the window by those who belong there.

efforts to wring news from a skeleton staff of reporters, they have little time to reflect and explain.

As I sit here now, still trying to perform this editorial function for our community, while Flagpole hangs on in an environment increasingly hostile to newspapers, I feel the responsibility to try to get down to the heart of matters. Any editorial writer in search of something to say will note a certain dissonance—something that doesn’t add up, doesn’t make sense, which may be indicative of a deeper truth. Here’s an example—two, actually—zombies and vampires. Why can we not get enough of zombies and vampires? Why will people pay money to watch one “person” suck the blood of another? What is our fascination with “people” covered in horrible sores, staggering along in spite of being more or less dead? Yes, I understand the fun of turning these horrible symbols of death into pop stereotypes that turn dread into fun. But why the popularity of zombies and vampires, while werewolves and ghosts can hardly get a casting call?

OK: Let’s cut to the chase and deliver the punditry. We all know that moviegoers during that other Great Depression in the 1930s loved to sit in the dark and watch the swells in their tuxedos and gowns sipping highballs in swank Manhattan apartments while the rest of the country worried about paying the rent. The highlife hijinks took our minds off our troubles and gave us the

No. Vampires are much sexier. Vampires look good in gowns and tuxes and are right at home in penthouses. Vampires make it OK to live high off the blood of others, whose reward is to become vampires themselves and live off the blood of yet others, a sort of Ponzi scheme that keeps us all fanging for success.

So, that’s what the movies and TV are telling us. What will you be? A zombie or a vampire? This is the great disconnect in our society. We all want to be vampires, but most of us lean ever more precariously toward zombiedom—especially newspaper editors, but also anybody who holds down a job in manufacturing, farming, teaching, office work. Jobs are becoming obsolete. We all are becoming superfluous, dead.

But the 1 percent in the penthouse: There live the vampires. They suck our lifeblood, and they have figured out how to turn all our institutions against us, so that while they batten on us, we don’t even get to become born-again vampires. Zombies are the best we can do. It’s lonely at the top, but that’s OK, because we’re just lurching along in the street with all the other walking corpses, hoping to be made great again.

Sure. No problem. The man who personifies all the best qualities of the vampire has assured us we will be. f
