Issues on Epps Bridge COMMISSION REJECTS SENIOR SUBDIVISION, AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

By Blake Aued and Dan Jackson news@flagpole.com After residents of nearby subdivisions bent their ears for nearly two hours, AthensClarke County commissioners rejected a rezoning last week for an 83-home 55-and-up development off Epps Bridge Parkway near Timothy Road.

While attorney Jim Warnes touted the need for housing for seniors and refuted criticism, potential neighbors raised issues of density, traffic, environmental damage from grading and affordability. “Just because this development targets the older demographic doesn’t excuse the serious faults in this plan,” St. Ives homeowners association president Jane Sullivan said.

“The things that concern me in this project haven’t changed,” Commissioner Mike Hamby said. “It’s the density and the mass grading. We can talk about the 55 and older.

That’s a laudable goal for us to have. But this body, this government, doesn’t have any control over that.”

Athens is growing, though, and the population regionally is aging, Commissioner Kelly Girtz said—if people move to outlying counties, they’ll still drive through the city.

“I think this is a good project,” he said.

“The more we can find these pockets and increase our density slightly, the less

we’re going to have to build these ginormous high-rises that definitely do impact neighborhoods, and the less we’re going to be inviting people who have more wealth to displace people in our existing neighborhoods,” Commissioner Melissa Link said.

Commissioner Mariah Parker argued against the development’s $300,000-plus prices. “We do have a desperate need for senior housing, but we have to encourage senior housing that is accessible for people with varying income levels,” she said.

Parker also noted that the majority of speakers were opposed to the development.

“I think it’s important to look out for the people who already live in Athens and stand with them, rather than look ahead to how we can attract people here,” she said.

The developer didn’t make any concessions in exchange for higher density, Commissioner Jerry NeSmith said—not even a traffic light. “We’re not getting anything in return for this, except the promise that wealthy people from other communities will move into our town,” he said.

“That’s not good enough.”

Link, Girtz and Bell supported the Epps Bridge development, which was denied by a 7-3 vote.

As expected, the commission unanimously approved historic districts on Milledge Circle and Castalia Avenue in Five Points. What was surprising was the margin: The districts passed unanimously, with even Bell in support. Bell had angered many constituents (and colleagues) when she allowed a tear-down to move forward on Milledge Circle last year, then refused to explain herself. She did speak on the topic last Tuesday, and it’s worth quoting in full: “This is a very incredible journey for me, and I want you to know, there is no one who likes the preservation any more than I do, but what I don’t like is the route that sometimes it takes, and this has been a journey for a lot of people. And what I want to address right now is the people who do not want to be a part of [but] are being forced to be a part of a historic district. The flexibility we will be giving—and this will come in just a minute, I hope—but I want them to know how much I care about them. What has happened is under the rules. What has happened is under the preservation demands. I respect that, but I want it to be done the right way to respect those other people that don’t want to go the angle that this forces them to.”

The flexibility Bell referred to was a tweak to the districts protecting structures built before 1949, instead of 1964, as originally proposed.

The third major zoning item drew far less discussion but could have a greater impact on the city as a whole: a 10,000seat amphitheater off Commerce Road just north of the Loop. After a motion to deny by Hamby—who had environmental

concerns—failed, the commission voted unanimously to approve a rezoning for the amphitheater.

Commissioners also put off a decision on proposed changes to the Southern Mill development off Chase Street, wanting to learn more about the latest iteration of the project. [Blake Aued] SHOWING ’EM WHO’S BOSS: State law requires the ACC Commission to approve the Clarke County school board’s millage rate. Usually it’s a formality, but Hamby pulled it off the agenda to make two points. First, school taxes make up 60 percent of taxpayers’ bills, but when people complain about their property taxes, they generally complain to commissioners, which has always irked them. Second, Hamby wanted to advocate for more collaboration between ACC and the Clarke County School District.

“This board and the school board should be looking for opportunities to work together,” Hamby said. He pointed to the vacant West Broad School, where the Athens Land Trust, which runs a community garden and farmers market on the property, is pitching a community center.

CCSD plans currently call for turning the school into administrative offices, although Superintendent Demond Means recently proposed pre-K classrooms. If CCSD accepts the land trust proposal, the West Broad study group chaired by Hamby has offered $3 million in SPLOST youth development funds, and ACC could also make room for CCSD central offices in a government complex commissioners are discussing for the next SPLOST in 2020. BAR BOTTLES: The commission also unanimously passed incentives for bars to serve canned beer rather than bottled. County Solid Waste officials recently told commissioners that they want to minimize the amount of glass they have to pick up downtown. It’s heavy, cuts through bags, injures workers and doesn’t sell for much on the recycling market, they said. They proposed giving bar owners a break on their alcohol licenses—potentially saving them thousands of dollars—if they move away from bottles.

Speaking of bars, the commission also passed a new policy that will give it a little more control over how many bars open downtown and where. A recent “health and safety” study found that packed bars close together present a hazard. The new policy will require commission approval as a “special use” under ACC zoning law for any new bar downtown with a capacity over 100, as determined by the fire marshal. The policy will not affect any existing bars, or even a new bar replacing one that’s closed; it only kicks in when a bar is proposed in a space that has not been used as a bar for at least 12 months. UGA Union: No Paying to Park The United Campus Workers of Georgia has taken on employee parking costs as a new challenge for its 150 members, and more than 30 union members met late last month to discuss the issue.

The union—formed in 2016 after the University of Georgia angered many employees by changing their payroll schedule—is asking the university to adopt a sliding-scale fee schedule for parking. Permits now range from $20–$40 per month, depending on the convenience of the lot’s location.

The union argues that the costs are too high for many of its workers, and says that 71 percent of respondents to a recent union-sponsored survey complained that current parking fees are “burdensome.” The union also points to Clemson University and the University of North Carolina’s sliding scales. Clemson workers who earn less than $30,000 pay only $24 per year,

while those employees earning more than $200,000 pay $440 per year.

To initiate the campaign, union spokesperson Joey Carter recently presented the sliding-scale concept at a UGA staff council meeting, where the idea was received positively, according to Carter. The presentation marked the first time the council—a formal body of more than 160 staff members with representatives from each school and division of the university—had officially heard from the union.

Days after the late-June union meeting, the university’s Transportation and Parking Services office sent a note to UGA parking patrons announcing a new $10-per-month option—one-half the price of the current lowest parking fee—to park at a lot just outside the Loop off College Station Road. From there, employees will take a shuttle to their places of work. Athens Transit also offers shuttles to downtown and North Campus from the free ACC-owned park-and-ride lot at Oconee Street and the Loop; city buses are free for UGA faculty, staff and students.

Carter wrote in an email about the university’s new pricing option, “When we organize, when we push, we see change.

But UGA needs to do much more than this.

UCWGA will continue organizing and pushing for an equitable parking sliding scale and for a living wage.”

UGA spokesperson Greg Trevor commented in an email, “The university offers different rates based on the location of the parking facility. The institution is continuously exploring ways to enhance the working and learning environment on campus, including the addition of a new lower-cost park-and-ride option that is opening this fall at the corner of College Station and North Oconee Access Road.”

UGA philosophy professor and former Democratic congressional candidate Richard Winfield, a member of the union, said parking costs hurt graduate students who he said “are teaching under conditions where they can’t support themselves,” and are among the lowest-paid university employees. Winfield agreed that the university should adopt the Clemson sliding-scale model. “The university should be a model employer,” he said. [Dan Jackson] f

John Barrow Is Back Former Athens Congressman Seeks Secretary of State’s Office

ohn Barrow is perhaps the foremost authority on the current hyper-partisan state of American politics. The former Athens-Clarke County commissioner, who hails from a prominent political family, was elected to Congress in a swing district in 2004. As a member of the dwindling Blue Dog coalition of moderate Democrats, his voting record often angered local liberals but allowed him to survive in increasingly conservative territory. Republicans in the state legislature removed his hometown of Athens, then the Democratic stronghold of Savannah from his district, leaving him with Augusta and a wide swath of deep-red rural East Georgia. For a time, he was the only white Democratic congressman in the Deep South, until Republican Rick Allen finally beat him in 2014.

Now, Barrow is running for Georgia secretary of state, the catch-all office that oversees elections, business licenses and dozens of professions, from nurses to hair stylists. He’ll face either former Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle or former Johns Creek representative Brad Raffensperger in November, depending on the results of the July 24 GOP runoff.

The fast-talking, Harvard Law-educated Barrow is as folksy as ever, declaring before a recent Flagpole interview that he’s “busy as a fish at a fish fry.” His thoughts—condensed for length—on gerrymandering, political strategy, reforming Georgia’s elections and more are below.

Flagpole: What made you want to jump back into politics, and why secretary of state in particular?

John Barrow: First off, the qualities I think I excelled at in that highly polarized legislature I served in are exactly the qualities we need in a secretary of state—a certain amount of bipartisanship. Every now and then, the secretary of state has to participate in resolving disputes involving issues related to elections, and that requires, at minimum, somebody who’s willing to listen to and work with people on both sides of the aisle. I was the most bipartisan member of Congress running for re-election in 2014, and I don’t think anybody else on the ballot can say that.

Also, the job requires a huge amount of commitment to constituent service. The job essentially is a constituent service agency for the business community. And constituent service is another area where I excelled. My frustration with the political process made me more determined to do what I could for the folks I represented, and I think I had the reputation of having the best constituent services operation of any member of Congress from Georgia. The office regulates 700,000 professions who have problems, from time to time, with the agency they got to deal with. I had 700,000 constituents in my district who had a lot more problems with the federal bureaucracy than the 700,000 professionals do with the state, so I’ve got a real reputation for working my you-know-what off for the people who are paying for the service they deserve.

FP: What did you learn from your 2014 race? Is there really still a thirst for bipartisanship in the electorate?

JB: The desire has never been greater, but the ability to satisfy that desire has never been less. That is because of the effects of partisan gerrymandering. It is in some part because of the behavior of voters, by sorting themselves out into like-minded voting enclaves and becoming more polarized in their voting. They are responding to what they see, but if you talk with them—I had 400, give or take, town hall meetings. If you talk to them as much I did, you realize that folks aren’t happy with the choices they feel like they have to make, but they feel like they have to make them. That’s what’s driving partisanship today: It’s not so much love of your own party as fear and hatred of the other party. Voters don’t like that. They sense that’s not the way things used to be, and they know that’s not the way things ought to be.

The only way they have to respond to a party that’s gone too far to one extreme is to vote for a representative of the other party. But because of the parties’ nominating process, the only alternative to somebody who’s taken the country into the right ditch is to vote for somebody who’s gonna turn around and take the country into the left ditch. Who can you get to get the country to go down the middle and stay out of a gulley?

FP: That almost sounds anachronistic. It seems like the Democratic Party is moving to the left, and they’re doing what the Republican Party has done, which is turn their base out. What you’re talking about, can that still work in this environment?

JB: In these district maps that are drawn to order, that preordain an outcome, the candidates of both parties tend to be either products of hyper-partisanship or prisoners of it. They’re either products of it—they’re caught up in it, and they don’t know any better—or they’re prisoners of it, like [former House Speaker] John Boehner was. He wanted to do some things with President Obama that he couldn’t do, and he got fired for daring to try. Most politicians who get into our representative branch of government have to run through these hot gates, these partisan primaries, which means, when you emerge on the other side of that process, you either drunk the Kool-Aid or you have to pretend you did, or they’ll replace you with somebody else who has drunk the Kool-Aid. One of the reasons I think there’s an opportunity to break this cycle in the race I’m running in is, it’s a statewide district. It’s the one district they can’t gerrymander. We go to war with the army we got, not the army they wanna give us.

FP: How does this strategy fit in with Stacey Abrams at the top of the ticket? She’s going to be trying to turn out African Americans and first-time voters, whereas you’re trying to reach out to the middle. Do they complement each other?

JB: Either complement or supplement. It can only help and cannot hurt the rest of the ticket. I don’t think we have to have an either/or approach.

FP: The current secretary of state, Brian Kemp, has been criticized for refusing to accept some voter-registration applications and removing people from the voter rolls. How would you

treat voter registration? Would you look as closely at the forms as he’s been doing?

JB: Some of the things they’re doing I think are plainly illegal. The match program was challenged in court, and they agreed to stop doing it. [Editor’s note: Kemp had required that information on voter registration applications exactly match information in other databases, which disenfranchised more than 40,000 Georgians, such as married women whose maiden names were listed on some documents, or those with very minor discrepancies like a missing hyphen or accent mark.] Then the legislature came along and made that policy a statute. There are other things they’re doing to make it harder for folks to register and stay registered. The programs they’re engaging in now rely on, I think, an exaggerated interpretation of state law and plainly ignoring federal law. You’ve got to follow both.

FP: Another issue in the secretary of state’s office has been leaked voter data. What would you do to protect voters’ personal information from being leaked or hacked?

JB: I’d protect it, and I’d fire the people who didn’t. I’d insist that we took as good care of that as we took care of people’s confidential information when I was trying to get somebody their VA benefits. There’s no excuse for giving 6 million social security numbers to a vendor who didn’t ask for them.

FP: You’ve talked about bringing back paper ballots…

JB: We’ve got to decertify the DRE [direct-recording electronic] machines. There’s a process for doing that. I would initiate that process immediately upon taking office.

I certainly don’t criticize those who chose an electronic medium for our balloting process back in 2002. The locks were a lot stronger than the picklocks in those days. You can’t say that about the locks now. They haven’t even bothered to upgrade them. They’re not even being serviced or supported by the companies that manufactured them. They know there are gaps in the system that they don’t bother to plug, because not enough of their customers use this system to make it worth their while to keep up. And yet, that’s the stuff we’re using for our elections! The most important business we engage in as a representative democracy!

FP: So you want new electronic voting machines, but you want paper receipts, right?

JB: Receipts convey the wrong impression—folks carrying away the evidence of their votes. We can’t reconvene these folks back together in case of a recount. The trick is not to let the voter know how he voted. The voter knows how he voted. The trick is to provide an accurate record that’s absolutely reliable and can be counted and recounted if necessary—and, at the same time, be kept secret.

What we need is hand-marked paper ballots, optical scanners to provide a quick but unofficial tally of the vote at the end of Election Day, plus audits of these optical scanners to make sure we’re not relying on an unofficial count that’s misleading in any way. This is the technology that’s already authorized for absentee ballots and provisional ballots.

FP: We’re not talking about Florida in 2000 with hanging chads…

JB: No. Nobody’s doing that anymore. That’s the reason Georgia went down this road in 2002. We were the first state out of the box. That has served its day, and it’s time for them to be retired.

If you talk to people who are most technologically savvy, they say nothing is better than paper and pen. This is a back-to-the-future moment. We can use technology to enhance the voting experience, but we should never trust our ballots anymore to a medium that cannot be read and understood by a human being. f

Blast From the Past DISCOVERING PYLON THROUGH FLAGPOLE, 30 YEARS LATER

he big 3-0: Though this is a milestone I passed some time ago, many of the foundations of my music collection are now coming of the age “not to be trusted.” This has prompted me to relisten and revisit these recordings to see if they hold up.

The year 1988 was an odd one, and one I remember well, but what is to be done when an editor requests that I make these pieces more Athens-focused? How can I provide that focus when it was four years after ’88 that I began living in the Classic City? That’s easy: Thanks to the internet, I read 30-yearold issues of Flagpole online. Today, we browse the July 13, 1988 issue and the article by then-editor Jared Bailey titled “Pylon: Surprise Attack”—a review of the July 2, 1988 Pylon performance at the 40 Watt Club, which, it’s important to note, broke a five-year hiatus for the band.

The issue also includes announcements for performances by Widespread Panic, Hillbilly Frankenstein, Meat Puppets, BarB-Q Killers and Love Tractor; a story of a “suprise R.E.M. performance of new songs for their “first major label record”; and an editorial response to censorship overreach.

The advertisement in this issue for the 40 Watt lists its address as 256 W. Clayton St, which is the current location of the Caledonia Lounge.

In his glowing review of the show, in which he feels “embarrassed by such a string of incessant superlative heaping,” Bailey assesses the performance with a three-part test, the first part being danceability.

“Pylon was the dance band in town where the whole scene was based on dancing, before crowds became complacent and forgot how to feel the music,” he writes.

“The second part of the test was there also.

No, wait, I meant: post-punk without the melodrama.”

“Feast on my Heart” and “Volume” certainly live up to this description. To me, anything rock, pop, country or soul released in the early ’80s still has disco dripping from it like rank grease. But what is different here is the staccato nature of

recordings. This was quite an assurance to the young fans who had never seen live Pylon on fire, proving the band as powerful as the legend. The third part of the test were the smiles—not those of the faces in the crowd, even though they were beaming all over the room from sweat-soaked dancing faces—but July 13,19 those of the band.”

VOL ~ Now is as good a time as any to admit that I’ve never listened to Pylon. The year of that show mostly found Poison and Van IT'S Halen in my boombox, along with very healthy doses of Fox 97 and 96 Rock. “Functionality” has the stripped-down simplicity of late-’70s punk with foot-hopping movements that straddle post-punk and new wave. The guitar that buzzes like a drunken bee defies the idea that Pylon was picking up where Blondie left off, but there are plenty of examples to support this statement, as well. The first that comes to mind is “Beep.” I would say, “What if you had the Talking Heads, but a bit less snotty?” Then, as I am writing this, I hear the single, “Crazy”—yeah, here is where I tell you I did not know until this moment that this was not originally an R.E.M. song.

As the last notes of “Cool” resonate through my head, I am reminded that there is not much I can say that has not been said hundreds of times before about Vanessa’s pop growl, the attacking snaps of Curtis’ drums and the bouncing interplay between Randall and Michael’s strings that would become the template for new wave for years to come. All I really have to offer is fresh ears to hear if this music that is more than 30 years old holds up. In my opinion, it surely does, and maybe more importantly, it gives me the much-needed context to Jared’s review from this week in 1988.

“They looked strong and shining new and bold like gods showing us revelations of how things were and can be again in this jaded musical society,” he writes.

“Strong, fawning praise—but all it took was seeing monoliths come alive. Vanessa seemed to be the Pygmalion it took to end the reign as statutes by just dancing her dervish-inspired trance that caught the band back up it its fury. Scene Snapshot THIS YEAR’S MOEKE COMP SHOWCASES WOMEN IN LOCAL MUSIC

W

hen summertime in Athens rolls around, there’s much to be thankful for: more bearable traffic, shorter brunch lines and pools aplenty to drop in on. But for small businesses and musicians alike, time can slow to a crawl as the bulk of clientele and audiences head back to the ’burbs. No stranger to this seasonal downturn, recording engineer and studio operator Jesse Mangum— with a little ingenuity—developed a productive way to pass the summer and drum up business for the fall.

“In the spring of 2014, I quit all of my other jobs to focus on running the studio full time, and things were actually going really well until summer hit,” says Mangum. “Athens, being a college town, slows down tremendously during the summer, and suddenly I found myself with a lot of free time.”

So, to occupy whatever hours weren’t booked at his The Glow Recording Studio, Mangum crafted a recording project that would serve as both an exercise in efficiency—for him Jesse Mangum and whomever he would record—and as a seasonal compilation to document what was going on in the local music scene at the time.

“The concept and parameters have remained pretty much static throughout the series,” Mangum explains.

“Artists are given a four-hour block in which we record, mostly live, with a few things overdubbed afterwards; mix; and master their song at my studio. The single is then released later that week, warts and all, via the Moeke Records Bandcamp.”

Featuring a cross-section of local talent over the past five years, from Monsoon to Scooterbabe and Harlot Party to Dream Culture, Mangum has fielded submissions for his Summer Singles sampler each summer without any real thematic criteria: Submit a demo recording of a song in any number of formats—crude voice memo, unmixed GarageBand track or live-band practice session—and if he likes it, welcome aboard. Without much intention, though, this year’s compilation has taken on new life.

“Well, towards the submission deadline, I realized that seven of the 10 artists I had selected happened to be female-fronted,” Mangum Kissing Booth says of this year’s compilation. With the bulk of the singles already representing a swath of Athens and Atlanta’s premier women-centric acts, Mangum decided the collection’s full 10 songs should be comprised of female-led or female-identifying acts. “It just seemed appropriate to put a spotlight on the incredibly talented women that are, in my opinion, dominating the local music scene right now,” he says, touching on the national watershed moment represented by movements like #MeToo, as well.

“The fact that Jesse has decided to take this approach speaks for itself,” says Avery Draut, lead singer and songwriter for Avery Leigh’s Night Palace, a featured act on this year’s comp. “Jesse is demonstrating a commitment to extending his privilege to dismantle it, and I am excited to see other Athens folks follow his lead,” she adds.

With the first single by songwriter Erin Lovett’s Kissing Booth project already in the bag, this summer’s series has the potential to be Mangum’s Moeke magnum opus.

It’ll be one to savor, as Mangum believes this may be his last edition of the series. “I would love to keep it up, but a number of factors suggest to me that it may no longer be feasible,” he says. For one, he’s now consistently busier during the summer months than he has been in years past. Couple that with the difficulty social media’s algorithms pose in regards to promoting the project, and it becomes an uphill battle.

“Promoting the singles organically via Facebook, for example, just isn’t as far-reaching as it used to be,” he says. “The posts just aren’t being seen, and the concept of paying for sponsored posts just so my friends can see them doesn’t sit right with me.”

Still, Mangum’s proud of the work he’s put in over the past five years, and he recently found a new perspective on the project after a conversation with an acquaintance.

“It hadn’t occurred to me that these recordings, a decade or two from now, would serve as [a] unique documentation of the Athens music scene during this time period,” Mangum says. “Some of these tracks are the very first studio recordings of bands who have since become significant figures in Athens music lore, and it’s likely that many more will do the same in the coming years,” he adds.

Due to his sojourn to the quantum realm in the climax of the first movie, Scott seems to have a connection to Janet that might lead to her eventual rescue. Or so Hank and Hope hope, until a sleazy black-market tech dealer (Walton Goggins) and a mysterious masked phase-shifter get in the way.

Fortunately, Scott is still in business with his former partner in crime, Luis (Michael Peña), who comes through in a pinch, constantly nailing punchline after punchline. Still, Ant-Man’s real superpower is the charm of Rudd, who pulls off dazzling physical comedy, as well a terrific bit of classic body-swapping. His portrayal of the enormous love the estranged Janet possesses for her family is as convincing as Pfeiffer’s, but way funnier.

As the MCU has expanded to explore its more humorous corners in the two volumes of Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok—a sincere contender for 2017’s funniest film—Ant-Man, which initially cast itself as the funny Marvel movie, has etched out a singular spot for itself thanks to its small stakes and big heart. The familial bonds of the Ant-Man heroes—be it Hank and Hope or Scott and his daughter, Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson)—grant these two movies the biggest heart in the MCU. Scott is not saving the world; he is saving himself so he can be a good dad for Cassie.

Stakes may get bigger; they do not get more personal.­ Yet do not think ­Ant-Man and the Wasp forgets it is a superhero movie. In their second outing, director Peyton Reed and his new quintet of screenwriters—which again includes star Rudd—utilize the shrinking

world—nay, the universe—and it is nice to have a small-timer like Ant-Man to turn to when the odds are not that grim but the day needs saving all the same.

On View on Campus SOUTHERN WOMEN, BOTANICALS AND MORE AT THE GEORGIA MUSEUM

All exhibitions will be celebrated during 90 Carlton: Summer, the museum’s quarterly reception featuring gallery activities, door prizes and refreshments, on Friday, July 20 from 5:30– 8:30 p.m.

Presenting movie adaptations of classic novels, the Southern Women Artists Film Series will include 7 p.m.

CENTRAL TO THEIR LIVES: Women artists have been severely underrepresented in major permanent collections across the U.S. and Europe throughout history, to such an extent that any accusations of women appearing as the muses on canvases more frequently than the names on wall placards seems beyond plausible.

On tour from Spartanburg, SC, “Central to Their Lives: Southern Women Artists in the Johnson Collection” takes a step towards correcting the canon by examining the hardships and achievements of artists from one of the most overlooked regions of the country. On view through Sept. 23, the exhibition selects 42 women artists who were active between the late 1890s and early 1960s, a pivotal time characterized by redefining women’s social, cultural and political roles.

Thankfully, the exhibition takes the time to include biographical information on each artist, sharing how many were influenced by complex challenges not limited to prescribed gender roles, access to education, racism and poverty. Virginia painter Nell Blaine, who once wrote, “Art is central to my life. Not being able to make or see art would be a major deprivation”—a heartfelt line that inspired the exhibition’s title—succeeded in creating art despite visual impairment, polio and paralysis. Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington, whose bronze “Yawning Tiger” sculpture is on view, went on to establish the nation’s first public sculpture park at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina, despite little formal instruction in an art form that had often been assumed as too physically “Art Studio” by Theresa Pollak in “Central to Their Lives” demanding for a woman to master. BLOOM WHERE YOU’RE PLANTED: With an emphasis on portraiture, still life and landscape, “Bloom Where You’re Planted: The Collection of Deen Day Sanders” beautifully portrays a slice of American life. Most prominently, the heavy presence of botanicals and outdoor scenes demonstrates Sanders’ devout love of the natural world. In addition to serving as president of the Garden Club of Georgia and National Garden Clubs, Inc. and vice president of the World Association of Floral Artists, she has been on the boards of the Atlanta Botanical Garden and U.S. Botanic Garden. She has also supported the State Botanical Garden of Georgia since its establishment over 50 years ago and helped develop plans for the Cecil B. Day Chapel, a peaceful venue in the woods named for her late husband, as well as an accessibility path in the Shade and Native Flora Gardens in memory of her late son, Burke Day. Somehow, Sanders managed to find time around her philanthropic pursuits to build one of the most notable art collections in the state. On view through July 29, the exhibition includes paintings, furniture and porcelain pieces that exemplify major trends in American art from the 19th to early 20th centuries. A perplexing number of portraits—such as those

by Charles Curran, Seymour J. Guy, George Lambdin and Thomas Sully—depict women and children reading, reflecting a societal shift as reading literature for leisure or educational purposes became more common in privileged spheres.

While many of the still-life paintings are timeless odes to flowers in full bloom, some incorporate unexpected subjects, like ripe raspberries from August Luax and birds’ nests from Severin Roesen. Multiple landscape artists, like Albert Bierstadt, Herman Ottomar Herzog and Thomas Moran, attempt to capture the vast horizons and uncharted wilderness of the American West.

A LEGACY OF GIVING: Recognized on campus as the namesake behind UGA’s Terry College of Business, alumnus Herman Terry and wife Mary Virginia Terry made a generous donation in 1990 that held the record of being the largest private gift in UGA’s history. Over the past several decades, their contributions have endowed numerous faculty chairs, research programs, scholarships and other endeavors not limited to academia.

On view through Aug. 5, “A Legacy of Giving: C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry” displays a collection of 14 paintings and works on paper by American and French artists that were gifted to the museum in 2017. The donation reflects two of Mary Virginia’s greatest philanthropic interests—education and the arts—and she hopes the pieces will make a positive impact on students’ lives. The gift includes watercolors by Winslow Homer, John Stuart Ingle, John Singer Sargent and Andrew Wyeth; pastels by Childe Hassam and Laura Coombs Hills; and oils

That band suffered through a painful breakup, but Lewis transitioned into a successful solo career. Her sound has shifted over the course of four albums and now rests somewhere between alt-country, pop and soul. Dramatic Dining PLUS, WINGS AND BURGERS APLENTY

By Hillary Brown food@flagpole.com IF YOU LIKE…: Despite its location in a shopping center, The Falls (8851 Macon Hwy., 706-850-2217) is a pretty dramatic space once you step in the door. Built to take advantage of the river view, it features tall windows in the more-than-double-height dining room through which you can see the eponymous water feature. Mostly, it shoots for upscale, from the decor to the price point, although the big TVs in the bar section, which isn’t really separated from the rest of the room, undercut that impression a little. Ditto for the $20 piña colada ice cream made tableside with liquid nitrogen, due to the fact that the show—and it is most definitely a show—is accompanied by Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Piña Colada Song).” Even if you’re amused the first time you hear it, you’ll be less so the second. And the third.

The menu is mostly split between surf and turf, with a handful of handmade pastas. There’s a bit of upsell that comes standard, a fostering of the “treat yo’self” mentality that may end in disappointment if you get the housemade candied maple bacon, which is limp and way too sugary.

On the other hand, the meatballs, which come with a sherry-cream veal sauce, ain’t bad. The roasted pork belly, which comes over Anson Mills rice grits with a blackstrap molasses sauce and a cucumber-mint salad, is rich but not too sweetly sauced, as it easily could have been.

The fried green tomato BLT, an app that is a deconstructed version of the sandwich, stacks sliced fried tomatoes and Sweetgrass Dairy pimento cheese and ends up too heavy, with the flavors mushed together. Pasta is often a letdown at fancier restaurants, and the rabbit tortellini with micro-greens and an au jus cream sauce does have some things going for it, but the meat ends up too stringy, and the pasta itself isn’t quite good enough to overcome it.

The Georgia scallops à la Catalana work pretty well, however. They’re of a decent size and not overcooked, and the sauteed spinach with pine nuts and raisins that they sit atop is one of the best things in the restaurant; the latter is also available as a stand-alone side. Are they worth $30? Maybe not so much. If you go for the prime rib—and this is definitely a prime-rib crowd, with silky golf shirts aplenty—you may again find yourself a little underwhelmed for the $35 price tag, which doesn’t include sides. The meat is nice and well cooked, but the seasoning is too heavily applied. Simple roasted asparagus, one of the steakhouse-type sides, feels more satisfying than the hunk

of meat in some ways.

Among the desserts, you would be smarter to skip the tableside ice cream and opt for the s’mores tart instead.

Almost equally a gimmick—it comes under a glass dome filled with smoke that dissipates when the waiter unveils the dessert—it’s one that works. Not only do you get a whiff of the campfire, but the flavor of the smoke works its way into the chocolate tart and the marshmallow gelato. The cocktails, while they feel a little light on the booze, are well crafted and well balanced, if not the most forward-thinking in town. Maybe they’re a good lens for viewing the restaurant, which is a bit of an over-promiser but does deliver in some areas. The Falls is open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday, with the bar opening at 2 p.m.

FAST FOOD: WNB Factory (280 Williams St., 706-308-8088), a rapidly expanding franchise out of Atlanta, now occupies the former location of The Blind Pig. The W stands for “wings” and the B for “burgers,” and that’s a large amount of what the restaurant offers, although it also has fried rice (meh), fried fish (too thinly battered), The Falls shrimp, chicken tenders, salads and pre-mixed milkshakes (if the machine is working). The menu promises “Organic, Fresh Vegetables From Our Farm to Your Hand,” but the fact that the tartar sauce comes in a little prepackaged plastic cup makes that bold claim a little hard to believe.

The burgers are actually not bad, provided you eat them very quickly. The bun is a pillowy thing with only a bit of butter-toasted crisp on the outside to protect it from the frequently wet array of toppings, which means it entropically turns to goo in a hurry. The Southern Burger (slaw, pickles, jalapeños, barbecue sauce, American cheese) works pretty well. The Korean BBQ Burger (supposedly smoked

beef, mushrooms, onion, Swiss) falls flatter. If you order a “chicken burger,” prepare for what is actually a chicken sandwich, possibly doused with teriyaki sauce. The wings are on the hot side but smallish, available in flavors that include Thai Chili, Golden BBQ and honey lemon pepper.

The whole place still feels a little unfinished, with sheets of plywood on the patio and a big TV box sitting on the floor, but it doesn’t need to be super ritzy to attract its likely student clientele. Behind the Scenes YOU DON’T SEE THEM, BUT NOTHING HAPPENS WITHOUT THEM

You see them changing the furniture, but you don’t notice them. Actors notice them. They’re not called managers for nothing. They’re running the show from behind the scenes, assuring that actors make their entrances and that the set is ready for them.

I got to watch two experts at work during the recent Town & Gown play The Language Archive. Husband and wife team Nelson and Anna Reynolds were organized, efficient and filled with good vibrations, which they dispensed in hugs that energized the actors. (Nelson will be needing his

Granted, actors have tough jobs and need all the hugs they can get. They’ve got to memorize all those lines and make them believable in front of the audience, but none of it would work if they didn’t show up on cue and find their chair in its place and well lit. In our case that meant Isaac Callahan, who designed the lighting and ran the board to make sure it worked. Isaac is another one of those theater people who can do anything well and cheerfully.

Like Nathan Altman. Nathan, literally, does it all. He has star power. He has graced the cover of Flagpole three different times as the lead in T&G shows. He sings, he dances, he is serious, he is funny. He does it all, and he works just as hard behind the scenes. Most lately, he was assistant director on The Language Archive, helping to shepherd the development of the play, and he also designed the minimalist set that had to shift from scene to scene right before your eyes.

Mike Burke was the other assistant director, who helped the actors with their roles and was one of the actors himself, sort of like the playing manager some baseball teams used to have.

With such assistance, it’s no wonder director Julia Roessing delivered what became a sold-out smash hit.

the cover selection and takes each story and photo and puts them into the pages with the best possible visual impact. Music Editor Gabe Vodicka doubles as managing editor, to oversee editing and copy flow and figuring out what goes where in the paper. City Editor Blake Aued is prominent in our pages but also has his own editorial duties behind the scenes. Our office manager, Stephanie Rivers, not only does all the administrative chores that keep a business running, she also works on the calendar and manages our classified ads. And Jessica Smith, our arts editor, moonlights as our distribution director, being sure that she has enough drivers every week to get Flagpole out to the 300 locations where it can be picked up in Athens-Clarke County and Oconee and Oglethorpe counties. And speaking of drivers, local musician and tilelayer extraordinaire Charles Greenleaf has for two decades picked up the papers from the printer every Tuesday and distributed them downtown.

The paper you hold in your hand is the tip of an iceberg—the final product of a week’s worth of work by people who not only know their jobs and are good at them, but who also have a fierce pride in Flagpole and what our paper means to our community.

With a play and a newspaper, as with a band, there’s a lot more than meets the eye.

The show must go on, and all those who work behind the scenes assure that it will. f
