Not only would those changes slow traffic, but the roundabouts would reduce wait times to get on and off the Loop, Draper said. The unsignalized inner-Loop interchange, currently rated as “failing,” would improve to a B grade during the morning rush hour and an A in the afternoon, according to a traffic analysis.

Commissioner (and Mayor-elect) Kelly Girtz said he’s in favor of the changes, given that a new bridge wide enough for bike lanes likely isn’t in the works anytime soon. But Commissioner Melissa Link said she still wants to see bike infrastructure on Chase, arguing that cyclists in Normaltown won’t go out of their way to Barber.

When car speeds are lower, bikes may be able to safely share the road, Raessler said, or residents south of the bridge might be willing to give up the turn lane once they see that traffic has slowed. “They’re in trust-but-verify mode,” he said.

Restriping the bridge and laying down thermoplastic to make permanent the striping changes on Chase and Barber will cost $100,000 and can be done immediately after commission approval in July, Raessler said. Phase 2 (the roundabouts) would cost $3.46 million, and Phase 3 (the Barber and Oneta shared paths, Chase Street sidewalks and Boulevard bike lanes) would cost $5.35 million. The funding source is unknown. “There’s no Chase Street bucket of money we can dip into,” Raessler said.

On Barnett Shoals Road, the problem is simpler: how to connect bike lanes on the portion of Barnett Shoals between Lexington and Gaines School roads with the newly constructed bike lanes on College Station. Bike lanes already run through the newer portion of the Georgetown Square shopping center, so Toole and TPW simply proposed extending them through the older College Station shopping center next door (which Kroger is rebuilding at some point).

Barnett Shoals between Gaines School and College Station has too much traffic to lose any of its car lanes, consultant Ernie Bowman said, but long-term Toole and TPW recommend converting Barnett Shoals south of College Station to three lanes and adding a separated two-way bike path. Where it turns off at Whitehall Road—and becomes a popular recreational cycling spot—Barnett Shoals would get a shared-use path for bikes and pedestrians. The total cost is estimated at $1.8 million.

Commissioners also received an update from Parks Administrator Mel Cochran-Davis on plans to build a greenway along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Between Dudley Park and College Avenue, the North Oconee River Greenway is currently nothing more than an extra-wide sidewalk along Willow Street. Plans call for a true greenway to be built on the east side of the river between College Avenue and North Avenue. ACC already owns most of the land, but easements along three properties will be required, Cochran-Davis said. The $1.1 million project is funded by SPLOST 2011.

In addition, Leisure Services has revived plans to change the way it sets fees for activities and facility rentals. The new system, formulated with the help of consultants GreenPlay in 2015, was put on hold after commissioners decided they wanted to audit the department and former director Pam Reidy left. Longtime Leisure Services administrator Kent Kilpatrick has taken over for Reidy, and the audit recommended moving forward with the pricing structure. The new formula will calculate how much the service is worth on the open market and charge a percentage based on how much the service benefits the community as a whole (no or small charge) or the individual (up to market rate). But the actual new fees won’t be decided until the fiscal 2020 budget is released next spring. [BA] f

Are you riding your bicycle naked?

Sure, you can do it, but you certainly don’t have much protection in the event of a crash. Similarly, if you don’t include uninsured motorist coverage in your automobile insurance policy, you may be leaving yourself unprepared for the damages caused by careless car drivers.

Several recent collisions between motorists and cyclists have once again reminded us of the need for cyclists to protect themselves by insurance from the negligence of others. Many cyclists are unaware of the protections that can be included in their automobile insurance policies that provide coverage in the event they are injured by careless drivers. This coverage is not expensive to purchase, but may be invaluable in the event of an accident.

When a motor vehicle is insured, the policy of insurance may contain several different types of coverage. Liability coverage is required by law, in at least a minimum amount. All other coverages are optional. The one we are discussing here is uninsured motorist (UM) coverage.

What does it do? Your UM coverage acts in effect like additional liability coverage on the motor vehicle causing the damage. If that vehicle is completely uninsured, your UM coverage exists up to the amount set out in the policy. If the vehicle has only minimum or insufficient limits of liability coverage, your UM coverage can be added to those limits.

What does it cover? Just like liability coverage, UM coverage pays for all amounts owed by the careless driver of a motor vehicle for medical expenses, property damage, lost earnings, and pain and suffering, up to the limits of coverage.

Who is covered? UM coverage is provided for the person named as the insured in a motor vehicle insurance policy, and all relatives of that person living in the same household. The UM coverages in each policy on each relative living in the household all add together to make up the total limit of coverage.

Does UM coverage apply while I am riding my bike? Yes, this coverage follows every insured person, and comes into play if that person is injured by a motor vehicle. It therefore applies to bike riders and pedestrians, as well as to drivers and passengers.

How much UM coverage can I buy? By law, every agent selling car insurance must offer the client the option to purchase uninsured motorist coverage equal to the amount of the liability insurance limit. If your liability limit is $500,000, you can buy that amount of UM coverage. Frequently, without much (or any) discussion or consideration, the purchaser signs an application agreeing to lesser limits of UM coverage. This can be a mistake with serious consequences.

Are there conditions on the coverage? Yes, which is why it’s always important to read the policy.

Some auto policies require immediate notice of an accident, or UM coverage can be lost. After an accident with a motor vehicle as a cyclist or pedestrian, notifying your car insurance company might not be the first thing that comes to mind. Notifying your live-in grandmother’s auto insurer might never come to mind. Failure to notify all insurers with potential UM coverage might result in that coverage, which has been bought and paid for, becoming unavailable.

It would be horrible to be injured on your bike by a careless driver. It would be even worse if you had to bear all the expense of that injury yourself because the driver did not have enough insurance coverage. Don’t ride naked. Protect yourself.

Commissioner X MARIAH PARKER LOOKS TO FOLLOW IN HER IDOL’S FOOTSTEPS

Flagpole: Why did you choose The Autobiography of Malcolm X to be sworn in on?

Mariah Parker: I’ve taken a lot of personal inspiration from his transformation throughout his life, from extreme poverty and racial violence and the ensuing nihilism to becoming one of the most powerful political thinkers of that century, and being a really outspoken and fearless agitator for communities similar to the one I now serve [East Athens]. I wanted to swear my oath to be as vocal as he was, to be as fearless as he was, and to inspire as many people as he did.

FP: Were you expecting all this attention?

MP: Not at all. It was just what I wanted to do. I’m glad it inspired so many people, but honestly, it was just a personal accountability thing. I have received so much feedback from it, both positive and negative. I could not have imagined that happening.

FP: Is the job what you expected?

MP: Coming up face to face with it, it’s kind of like hitting a stop sign as far as what my priorities are and what are the priorities of the commission. My reception among the commissioners has been very interesting.

I’m always cordial and kind, because I think working from a baseline of mutual respect is important, but I don’t let it get me down when that respect is not reciprocated. That’s been challenging, but it gives me hope that in the next weeks and months, digging into it, putting forward policies I’m passionate about and that I think are critical, I can do it better. It’s a learning process.

FP: There was a horrible backlash. How did it make you feel seeing all those comments online?

MP: It was scary at first, getting death threats and things like that. Mariah Parker is recounting all the news outlets that have profiled her—there were others, including Newsweek, Teen Vogue and the AJC—since June 5, when she took the oath of office as Athens-Clarke County’s newest commissioner on a copy of The Autobiography of Malcolm X. The image of an afro’d young black woman, fist in the air, with a message of economic and social justice, ready to take her place in the halls of power briefly captured the public imagination.

Parker recently sat down with Flagpole at the Georgia Museum of Art to discuss her brush with fame and the work ahead. The interview has been condensed.

FP: There was a particular picture making the rounds, of you on a bike flipping off someone in a car. Do you remember the circumstances behind that photo?

MP: I can tell it was taken at least four years ago, because my bike has been gold since, I think, about 2014 or ’15. It seems it was an instance of somebody yelling at me out the window, and I turned, and they were photographing me without my permission. That combined with being a cyclist, which is already a high-stress position to

This year’s Flagpole Athens Music Awards show will feature awesome musical performances from Double Ferrari, Misnomer, The YOD, Sarah Zúñiga and Seth Hendershot with Ishues, and it’ll all be hosted by local hip-hop superstar Linqua Franqa. Per tradition, jazz mainstay Kenosha Kid will provide a groovin’ soundtrack for the evening. Special guests will include Athens Mayor-elect Kelly Girtz, representatives from the South East Women Wrestlers and many other luminaries.

By Kristen Morales news@flagpole.com Athens parents have long lamented the absence of a key feature in local children’s entertainment: the ability to sip a brew while watching your child kick back and have fun. Well, this year’s AthFest will be your chance to have that experience. In addition to the regular kid-friendly activities offered on the upper end of Washington Street, this year will also feature a beer tent adjacent to the area, according to Emily Due, who is organizing KidsFest this year as part of the annual AthFest festivities.

Those with kids “will be able to sit at tables, enjoy a cold beverage and watch their kids play,” she says. The beer tent at the main stage has been an overwhelming success for the festival, so the addition of another tent near the kids’ area is a natural progression.

MUSIC AND MORE: Aside from the tent, Due says many of the annual favorites will be back—specifically, the inflatables that are a good way to make your child sleep well that night.

“Like in previous years, there will be a KidsFest craft tent, the KidsFest stage full of great music, local organizations providing free activities at their tents, the Kona Ice truck, Home Depot will be having their own tent full of activities, and an inflatables area,” she says. “The inflatables are by far the biggest draw, but the Home Depot and craft tents are popular as well.”

This year’s craft tent will have an animal theme.

In previous years, a Saturday afternoon kids’ dance party has taken place adjacent to the festival, but indoors at Ciné. This year, Due says the dance party will be taking place on the KidsFest stage and built into the day’s lineup of entertainment. The dance party takes place from 1:30–3 p.m. on Saturday.

Otherwise, the kid-focused entertainment kicks off Friday evening with Boulevard neighborhood-based band The Voltures. Music kicks off Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and continues until the last band starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday features two

brimmed hat for both you and your kids, as well as sunblock. Downtown buildings only offer so much shade, and if you get burned on Saturday (or even Friday), it will ruin the whole weekend.

If there’s one thing we can learn from our kids, it’s letting go and getting messy.

It’s June in the South. If it’s not 95 degrees, it’s probably raining. Arrive at the festival expecting to be dripping with sweat throughout the day, and that way, when you find that patch of shade in the beer tent during the kids’ dance party, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Also, don’t forget the ear protection.

You might be slowly going deaf from all those concerts in your youth, but that doesn’t have to happen to your kids. Get some small headphones from reBlossom or another retailer and teach your kids about hearing protection early on.

Snacks, such as granola bars, plus some water are essential. Take more than you think, because as awesome as it is to get a funnel cake, standing in line is not—and that’s usually when you need the extra energy.

AthFest is a time to introduce kids of all ages to music. It’s big and loud and can be a great experience. Make the best of it! f

here are no fewer than 150 performers playing this year’s AthFest Music & Arts Festival—see the full schedule with artist descriptions on pp. 9–10—and unless you possess superhuman stamina and/or some sort of teleportation device, you’re not gonna be able to catch ’em all. That’s where we come in. Flagpole is handy for many things—starting fires! Lining pet crates! Light to moderate rain protection!—but chief among our annual duties is letting you know who to see at AthFest, when, where and why.

Jay Gonzalez cut his teeth playing piano at the now-defunct Kingpins bowling alley and the former Hendershot’s location on Oglethorpe Avenue before landing a residency at the Georgia Theatre Rooftop four years ago. His self-released debut LP, Mess of Happiness, is out of print, and its follow-up, The Bitter Suite, was a vinyl-only EP with only a precious few copies remaining. But Gonzalez remains known for his ability to act as a one-man band—or a human jukebox. Hunched behind his duct-taped piano, he plays guilty pleasures, deep cuts and one-hit wonders from the 1970s. Nick Lowe, Andrew Gold, Badfinger and Squeeze are no strangers to his repertoire as he seamlessly blends one song into the next.

Gonzalez’s AthFest appearance coincides with his ongoing residency on the Theatre roof. “With the rooftop shows, I like mixing the guilty-pleasure AM radio stuff with a few lesser-known deep cuts and whatever modern songs I’m listening to the week of the shows,” he says. “And sometimes a good TV theme.” When Gonzalez—who also moonlights with alt-country stars Drive-By Truckers—burst into a version of Elton John’s “Rocket Man” recently, a bevy of tipsy concertgoers instantly surrounded his piano. Dirty Dozen Brass Band

Dirty Dozen Brass Band has been performing its selfstyled “musical gumbo” of R&B, jazz, funk and Afro-Latin grooves since 1977. This unique band has toured more than 30 countries and recorded 12 studio albums. It’s also collaborated with everyone from Modest Mouse to Widespread Panic.

Originally from New Orleans, the band first performed in clubs like the Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club, dating back to a time when said clubs would provide

screams serve a purpose, but so can introspection. “It’s just a different kind of energy,” he says. “It’s a little more psychedelic and not necessarily dark, but it’s just a different vibe… I think it’s equally as compelling as some of the other amped-up, more rock and roll stuff.”

Morris’ current band, which includes former Powder Room guitarist Gene Woolfolk, has successfully eased tracks from the new album into its established setlist. “We start with some of the more mellowed out, newer stuff and make it have a screaming arch to the pinnacle,” Morris says. “It all works together, but it definitely takes some thought… It makes for a more interesting show.” [Bobby Moore]

Since emerging from the local jam scene several years back, Athens band Partials (formerly Partial Cinema) have slowly but steadily evolved into one of the spryest and most innovative groups in town. The group’s many talents are solidly on display on Glossolalia, its debut EP, released in April. Under the direction of vocalist and songwriter Adriana Thomas, the band incorporates elements of psych, funk, Afropop and electro-rock to create a unique sound that’s both edgy and engaging. Though it shares certain stylistic elements with groups like Talking Heads and LCD Soundsystem, Partials’ approach is wholly their own and well worth checking out—especially in an outdoor festival setting such as this. The Brokeoffs will play a rare local show at this year’s AthFest, so saddle up and gallop on over to The World Famous Friday. [GV]

T. Hardy Morris

Dude, the Obscure shares a different side of T. Hardy Morris. Instead of cranking out the amped-up punk anthems that have long highlighted his live set, the Athensbased singer, songwriter and guitarist wrote a more cerebral, plodding and psychedelic album worthy of its title’s jokey nod to Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure.

Aside from the relatively upbeat “Homemade Bliss,” Morris’ new batch of songs have a subdued, almost poetic feel—internal dialogues about life, love and faith. It’s the latest sign of creative growth from a versatile talent who has consistently wowed festival-goers since the days of Dead Confederate and Diamond Rugs.

Despite toning things down sonically, Morris doesn’t feel like he’s sacrificing anything creatively. Cathartic

On the back of two amorously titled EPs—2014’s Love You Mean It and 2015’s XOXO—Athens indie-folk collective Family & Friends seemed poised for bigger things. The hype train would’ve likely left the station as soon as a debut album dropped, based on those early examples of the band’s folk-informed songwriting and modern indie sound.

But instead of cashing in on a potential sure thing, guitarist and singer Mike MacDonald and his bandmates opened themselves up to a fuller, almost theatrical sound to accompany their proven storytelling chops.

“After our second EP, we kind of knew that it was time to push our own boundaries creatively and pursue a different sound, so to speak,” MacDonald says. “We’re not ones to necessarily want to stay in the same place, so it’s exciting for us to try to move in a different direction.”

This creative journey led to debut album Felix Culpa, out this month. Some songs, like “Winding Roads,” build on past successes. Others, like “PRSM,” reside way outside of the box. Both examples help define a band unwilling to pin itself down to a certain sound or lyrical approach—much like musical inspirations Local Natives, Alabama Shakes and Bon Iver.

The creative spurt behind Family & Friends’ new sound isn’t limited to the 12 songs on Felix Culpa, so expect to hear plenty more from a band uninterested in resting on its laurels. “There’s a good amount of songs that got left on the floor,” MacDonald says. “We probably had twice as much material and ideas floating around. We went out to L.A. last

If Athens music has a defining genre in 2018, it’s hip hop. Rap artists are driving the local conversation in more ways than one, from music to politics to social justice. Chief among these outspoken figures is Mariah Parker, aka Linqua Franqa, a UGA doctoral student turned Athens-Clarke County commissioner who has made national waves for both her provocative music and radical progressivism. She hosts this year’s Flagpole Athens Music Awards show (see box on p. 9) and plays AthFest’s main stage Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Just a few months removed from the release of its outstanding sophomore LP, Losing, Nashville rock band Bully will play the Georgia Theatre Saturday. Bully has been touring ferociously in support of the new album, and AthFest is the next in a seemingly nonstop run of festivals and club gigs for the recent Sub Pop signees.

After forming in 2013, Bully quickly gained recognition for its ’90s grunge revival sound and strong lyricism. After signing to Columbia Records, the band released its first album, Feels Like, in summer 2015 to critical acclaim. After a series of personal struggles and frustration with the bureaucracy of the major-label system, Bully left Columbia and retreated to the studio. The result was a darker, more political record that has gained the group just as many accolades as its debut.

Singer and guitarist Alicia Bognanno’s uniquely gruff vocals and uber-personal lyrics are the band’s defining trait, and as the group has grown into a second act, so has Bognanno’s songwriting. As we work our way through the second year with a proud misogynist as president, the frustrations present in Bognanno’s lyrics and emotional vocal performances feel like a necessary response to the bullies who run our country. David Lowery doesn’t believe in “standing still and resting on your laurels.” The musician, educator, and advocate recently earned his doctorate, focusing entertainment industry research he’d been pursuing for years into a PhD dissertation.

“I was interrupted by a 30-something-year music career,” says Lowery. “Essentially, what I do as an artist-rights advocate is a ton of research, digging and delving: reading laws, reviewing articles, court opinions, Senate testimony—I do all this stuff anyway, so it was a natural thing for me to research.” Similarly, Lowery’s advocacy and research focus on addressing, both practically and intellectually, the dilemma of today’s working musician: that “it’s never been easier to distribute your music, and it’s never been harder to get paid for it.”

Lowery brings a similarly skeptical, philosophical perspective to his songwriting with groups like Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven, and he’s bringing that perspective to this year’s AthFest with the former group, which is known for radio hits like “Low,” as well as several albums of genre-spanning goodness. Best known as a member of Atlanta garage-punk miscreants Black Lips during their puke-stained mid-aughts heyday, in addition guitarist Ian St. Pé has toured and recorded with indie supergroup Diamond Rugs, which also counts Athens’ T. Hardy Morris as a member. In 2015, the Nashville-based St. Pé struck out on his own as Saint Pé, and last year he released the shimmering, understated Fixed Focus, a sweetly accented 12-song set indebted to ’80s Petty and classic country as much as the Nuggets-era psych that fueled his former group. With his band, he plays Terrapin on Saturday as part of the brewery’s first-ever appearance on the AthFest schedule. [GV]

The Connells

During the 1980s, Raleigh, NC band The Connells connected the dots between trending English New Romanticism and good ol’ college-friendly American alternative. The six-piece, formed by brothers Mike and David Connell and singer Doug MacMillan, deals in a distinctly familiar Southern Gothic-tinged type of jangle pop that, with a shared producer in Mitch Easter, has historically drawn quick R.E.M. comparisons. The band traded in its 12-string Rickenbackers for a slightly heavier sound as it ventured into the ’90s, garnering modest chart success in the UK and appearing on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” twice before its members began pursuing other career paths. They now reconvene sporadically for live performances—usually benefits or festivals, in addition to a 30th anniversary performance in 2014. In other words, get it while the gettin’s still good. Sort of like The Tree That Owns Itself, the definition is kinda already in the name. Similarly, it’s sort of like AthFest, which hopefully all of you will get out to this weekend. Speaking of which, if you’re just visiting Athens: Please have a great time, but also be respectful of our town, try not to litter, and don’t be an extra burden to all the nice folks serving you drinks, food, etc. And all you locals: Please be nice to our visitors, and don’t assume they know where everything is or how everything works as well as you do. Remember, they’re our guests, and we should always give everyone a reason to keep coming back to the Classic City. Now, let’s get into the news…

COMING AROUND AGAIN: About 13 years ago, there was this band around named Fairburn Royals who gigged a whole lot, put out a few albums, then went the way of most bands as members married off, had children, etc. Now, they’re back with a new album that is arguably better than anything they did way back then. It’s named ’Til the Sun Disappeared, and it’s 10 tracks

of steady ’n’ catchy guitar pop.

Generally speaking, it’s closer to straight-up power pop— without ever really making the commitment to such—than anything else, and good for a night of beer drinking or whatever else you do when you throw on a power-pop record. Certain tracks carry over the pop spirit of the early 2000s (“On the 32,” “So Long to Disease,” “Century Ride”), when emo points were still measured by sweater thread counts and eyeglass frames. So, there’s that, too. The band will celebrate its release at Flicker Theatre & Bar on Saturday, July Fairburn Royals 7, so go say hey. RISE UP, GATHER ’ROUND: Athens rock band Greco is hosting a two-day, wristband-free, no-cover-charge event at The Roadhouse this Friday and Saturday. Friday’s show starts at 8 p.m. and runs all night, and Saturday’s soiree starts at 1 p.m. and goes all night. This isn’t an AthFest event, and is pretty much billed in such a way as to declare that it’s not, but even though I don’t know any of the artists involved, I’m kind of a softy for a good ol’ fashioned contrarian streak, so there ya go.

The order of bands isn’t announced yet as of this writing, but over the course of the two days, you can catch Flashback Flash, Greco, Quiet Coyote, Honey Strikes, Nobody’s Darling, Brown Goose, Last Chance Ryders and Michael Tracy. Oh, yeah, Sylvia Rose Novak is also playing, and she’s pretty darn good, so I can at least recommend her. f

ATHICA will take the next two months to settle into its new location just a mile away, a historic factory warehouse similar in aesthetic since, like Chase Park, it has been renovated into an adaptive mixed-used center.

GET ARTISTIC: Coinciding with AthFest weekend, Creature Comforts will officially launch Get Artistic, its newest community outreach initiative. Similar to Get Comfortable, the brewery’s campaign that fundraises for local organizations that address hunger, homelessness and poverty, Get Artistic will be a year-round effort towards supporting the arts in Georgia. In addition to expanding the various art exhibitions, performances and creative events that have been hosted since 2014, the initiative and associated nonprofit fund plans to introduce strategic grant opportunities, long-term patronage and partnerships, and enrichment activities for the arts community.

One hundred percent of profits from Get Artistic beer and merchandise will go into a fund that will be disbursed among creative community projects and the endeavors of local artists. The brewery will host free hands-on art activities like live screen-printing and mural painting throughout the weekend, as well as puzzle solving with Very Good Puzzle Company on Sunday.

BUS SHELTERS: The long-awaited opportunity for artists to create new bus shelters has arrived. The Athens Area Arts Council commissioned 11 bus shelters a decade ago as part of a public art collaboration with Athens Transit called “You, Me & the Bus.” Now, the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission is continuing the project with additional funding from Athens Transit and SPLOST. Individual artists and teams can submit design proposals for two types of bus shelters: those that are fabricated with unusual materials—think the school bus shelter on Atlanta Highway—or those that incorporate artist panels. The Portland, OR-based Malkmus has eased gracefully into rock-and-roll middle age, proving that he’s still quick on the lyrical draw with the newly released Sparkle Hard, his first album in four years and a contender for 2018’s top 10. The Foundry · 8 p.m. · $8–10 AthFest’s comedy showcase was designed to give local comics a chance to perform with bigger headliners and in front of bigger audiences. Performers have gone on to appear on late-night TV, movies and popular podcasts. This year’s headliner, Jason Webb, is known for his mix of high and low-energy material, along with a uniquely dark sense of humor. Originally from North Carolina and now in California, Webb has been doing stand-up for eight years, performing at events like the Orlando Indie Comedy Festival, Asheville Comedy Festival and SF Sketchfest, to name a few. Caledonia Lounge · 9 p.m. · $8–10 It’s a banner week in Athens for fans of influential indie singer-songwriters, as Omaha, NE fixture Simon Joyner will play the Caledonia one night after Malkmus’ stop at the Georgia Theatre. Joyner, often cited as a forefather of the hearton-sleeve Omaha scene that spawned artists like Bright Eyes and Cursive, has released nearly two dozen collections over the years that have alternated between lovely and lethargic (2001’s Hotel Lives) and dense and challenging (2012’s Ghosts). His latest, Grass, Branch & Bone, released in 2015, was a stripped-down record that found him paring his music down to its aching essentials. He plays Athens with his band and local support from Little Gold, Immaterial Possession and Small Science. [GV]

Offering an introduction to the variety of creative projects in town, Athens Rising bounces among music, dance, stand-up comedy, theater, visual art and the origins of AthFest. TAG (R) The expectations for a star-studded, Unfortunately, Renner’s Jerry gums high-concept studio comedy are not set that up the whole works. The actor is as myshigh. No one goes to movies like Tag—a teriously appealing as ever, and comes off going-of-age chuckler starring Ed Helms, way cooler than he did in Avengers or The Jon Hamm, Jake Johnson, Hannibal Buress Bourne Mumblemumblemumble. But Jerry and Jeremy Renner as a highly unlikely is a bucket of cold water on Hoagie’s dream group of friends—looking for an artistic friendship. Apparently, no one knows he revelation. Is it funny? Will I be entertained, to paraphrase Maximus? “Um, sure” is the answer, and that is absolutely OK, especially considering how unpleasant and unfunny many big Hollywood laughers can be.

No one may be able to explain how someone could have cast this quintet as lifelong friends, but everyone’s comic skillsets mesh approachably.

Screenwriters Rob McKittrick and Mark Steilen work way too hard to cobble together a traditional narrative out of Russell Adams’ Wall …And I should’ve knocked first.

Street Journal story “It Takes Planning, Caution to Avoid Being It,” about a group of grown men who is a recovering addict, or even that he is had been playing a game of tag for over 20 getting married. It is like they are not even years, when a more episodic “Jackass” forfriends outside of tag. His fiancée, Susan, mat would have fit perfectly. Imagine Tag comes off even worse, though not in the starring Johnny Knoxville and company expected evil fiancée way. The couple’s lastplaying real games of tag in the middle of act deeds undercut the movie’s final scene, a mall or hospital or wedding reception; that movie has transcendent potential à la Bad Grandpa. A globetrotting game of tag staged as an It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World cameo-fest where the guys keep showing up to tag each other in the most unexpected of places would also have better used the cinematic potential of a lifelong game of tag than this Stephen King-ish tale of camaraderie where the terrifying clown is replaced by a kids’ game.

Instead, father of an insignificant number of children Hoagie (Helms), conceited CEO Bob Callahan (Hamm), unemployed pothead Chili (Johnson) and their black friend Sable (Buress) plan to attend the wedding of their hostile pal, Jerry, who has never been tagged. While trying to catch Jerry, eternal child Hoagie learns that the quartet might not know their uncatchable fifth friend very well. Or at least that seems like it should be the last-act revelation of Tag. What transpires is much more mawkishly expected of these sorts of friendship comedies.

Fortunately, everyone besides Renner and his on-screen fiancée, Leslie Bibb, keep the game fun even when it should not be.

Sure, Helms has the thankless task of playing the straight(est) man, which is boring, if expectable; Isla Fisher gets to have loads more fun as his intense wife, who is relegated to the role of observer. Hamm continues his successful transition from soulless ad man Don Draper to vapid funnyman, and it is becoming difficult to determine in which type he is better cast. Johnson ekes every ounce of laughs out of the movie’s creakiest character, while Buress snags MVP honors as he scores on every single comic attempt.

a bravura sequence that shows audiences how excitingly lively the entirety of Tag could have been. Had Tag gone in a couple of other directions, it could really have been a memorable big-screen comedy as opposed to simply another flick destined to lose its well-earned year’s-funniest-movie status sooner rather than later.

INCREDIBLES 2 (PG) Incredibles 2 tries and mostly succeeds in making up for the unbelievable 14-year gap between films. With the world already built, the Parrs—Bob, aka Mr. Incredible (v. Craig T. Nelson); Helen, aka Elastigirl (v. Holly Hunter); Violet (v. Sarah Vowell); Dash (v. Huckleberry Milner); and Jack-Jack—can go crazy using their powers to defeat bad guys like the Underminer or new vilTag lain the Screenslaver. Still, one wonders why it took over two decades to come up with a plot that is more or less the same as the first film. The most significant difference is Elastigirl has become the fooled superhero, while Mr. Incredible struggles to raise the kids as a single dad. Thankfully, super-designer Edna Mode (v. Bird) is still on the Parrs’ speed dial.

BBQ With The Addams Family Lord knows there’s more than enough theater going on in Athens without having to cross the county line to see more, but any time Arts! Oglethorpe puts on a show, it’s worth the short trip down 78 to Crawford.

Bly Hartley has been the producer, director and angel there for a long time, and she knows how to get the best from script, actors and musicians. They work in the old two-story brick Crawford School set back from the road, on the right at 325 Park Ave. They work on the school, too, and have come a long way with its restoration, making it into a cool little theater.
