Creating a center for the study of slavery at UGA, as one faculty member proposed, Lee said, “is beyond the scope of my money.” Smith wants more research and collaboration between black Athenians and the university on the remains and their final resting places.

Reitsema said studying human remains provides direct information about that individual person and offers glimpses of the past. Her goal is to bring the lives of those individuals into daily public consciousness.

Studying these people offers a way to build bridges between the university and the community’s African Americans, she said.

Taylor Miller, academic director of the Peabody Center in the Grady College, questioned the university’s enthusiasm for such research. After one of his students created a documentary about the Baldwin Hall situation, Miller learned he “should be scared” for his job. Undergraduate Joe Devine made a 24-minute film on the issue, and shared the second half of it during the beginning of the forum.

When asked whether the university, as an institution, is talking about joining Universities Studying Slavery, a consortium of schools coming to terms with their past involvement with slavery, Vice President Cook said she hasn’t been a part of any such conversation. She didn’t know if others may have discussed the possibility. Scott Nesbit, a professor of digital humanities in the College of Environment and Design, said he suggested to Provost Pam Whitten three years ago that UGA join the consortium, but he said he’s heard nothing back.

There’s been no public discussion about how to commemorate the contributions of slaves on the university campus. Cook said conversations about commemoration may be happening, but she hasn’t been a part of them.

Prosecutor Isn’t Fit to Be Judge I am writing to recommend Eric Norris for Superior Court judge in Clarke and Oconee counties. I am a Democrat, as were my parents and my grandparents. I live in Clarke County. Judicial races are nonpartisan—for trial judges, this makes sense.

They decide individual cases, one case at a time. Very few cases have political implications, and their rulings have no precedential value.

I will be voting for Judge Eric Norris because he has well-rounded legal experience and has already proven himself to be fair, impartial, reasonable and respectful to all parties and participants. I believe the parties on both sides of a dispute want a judge who is neutral, does not lean toward one side or the other and can be fair to all persons.

The American legal system is adversarial. We expect the lawyers to take sides. We hope the judge does not.

For three decades, Allison Mauldin has been a prosecutor.

Prosecution is the foundation of her professional identity. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that—we need good prosecutors.

But the lifelong identification with a single cause does not prepare one to be an impartial judge. Believing in the rightness of prosecution becomes as reflexive as breathing.

This kind of habitual, committed worldview is nearly impossible to set aside.

In her three decades of prosecution, Mauldin has handled death penalty cases—seeking the death penalty rather than life without parole or life with the possibility of parole after 30 years of prison, though Georgia law never requires that a prosecutor seek the death penalty. She has been good at her job. She has never practiced in Clarke or Oconee, but in those counties where she has practiced, defense attorneys know her to be an aggressive prosecutor, seeking the harsh punishments and lengthy prison sentences permitted by Georgia law and especially favored in the counties where she has practiced.

A few years of prosecution experience combined with other types of legal practice, both civil and criminal, would make for a well-rounded lawyer. However, the single-minded dedication that Mauldin has shown for prosecution does not put her on the career track to be a judge. It is asking too much of a person to set aside the view she has held and practiced for 30 years.

Norris, by contrast, has already proven himself to be a thoughtful, fair and impartial jurist. He appreciates the uniqueness and humanity of every person and, at the same time, understands that the law applies equally to all. He understands the power of the office and the exceptional need to exercise power with impartiality. As a lawyer, Norris served a diverse group of clients on all kinds of cases across the spectrum of civil and criminal law. The majority of his legal work was in Clarke and Oconee

moderate Democrat and a concerned citizen in this climate of tribalism and division.

I’m also politically active. For example, when the health care law was threatened with repeal, I called the offices of Jody Hice, David Perdue and Johnny Isakson daily for weeks, along with sending several emails. I did this on my own, as a citizen of a democracy exercising my right to petition my elected officials with my grievances. In other words, I had no affiliation with any particular political group.

Liam Watson stated in his May 2 letter that he celebrates a thorough study of the issues from many perspectives and bipartisanship. I share that view. However, I beg to differ with his statements criticizing the progressive agenda of the Indivisible group. I also beg to differ with his claim that his candidate, Joe Hunt, understands the importance of representing all of the citizens of District 10, for, I would like to point out, the citizens of Indivisible District 10 are also the constituents represented by the elected congressperson responsible for representing everyone in this district, in spite of their differing views. It would have shown the voters that Hunt truly wants to hear and understand all of his constituents, as described by Biden, had he attended one of Indivisible District 10’s meetings. I was informed that Hunt’s true reason for not attending that meeting was to avoid angering his Republican donors. If that is false, then I invite Hunt to speak with Indivisible Georgia District 10 constituents in good faith should he secure the GOP nomination in the May 22 primary. I imagine it is too late to do so before that time.

Again, I am writing this not as a member of Indivisible Georgia District 10, but as someone who was disheartened that Hunt did not participate in the recent debate with the Democratic candidates and Bradley Griffin. [Editor’s note: Hunt says he was not notified of the Apr. 16 forum at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church until the day of the event.] Notably, Hice also did not participate in that debate, but I was very disappointed about Hunt’s absence specifically, because I was excited when he announced his run for office as a challenger for Hice, who has been an absolute failure at representing his full constituency in this district, as demonstrated by his refusal to not only initiate town hall meetings, but also by his absence at a town hall meeting at the ACC Library last year arranged by one of the local organizations in Athens that is part of District 10.

If Watson or Hunt were to ask the members of Indivisible Georgia District 10 what is most important to them in a U.S. Congressperson, my guess would be that it would align with my own gripe with Hice and my concern about Hunt’s pre-election behavior: not showing up. Woody Allen once said that “90 percent of life is showing up.” If Hunt continues to avoid constituents whose agendas and views do not align with his own or the president’s, then I have to assume he is not sincere in his claim to represent all of this district on a bipartisan basis by listening to all of the people, in person, when invited.

No one expects a congressperson to vote a certain way. None of us who is politically active is so naive. But we do expect him or her to show up, to listen and to treat us and the taxpayer’s money with the respect we deserve. That is a healthy democracy.

Bowden had also recently moved to Las Cruces to live with Molloy, who is a border and Latin American specialist at the New Mexico State University Library.

Bowden published Gutierrez’s story in Mother Jones, but Gutierrez himself had a hard time figuring out what to do.

“He was sort of at a loss what he was going to do,” Molloy said. “He wanted to write newspaper stories, but he really couldn’t because he’s living in the U.S. and couldn’t write in English.”

Like so many immigrants, he had to piece together a living working in landscaping and food service as his request for asylum dragged on. The request was finally denied last December, and Gutierrez and his son Oscar were locked up once again.

Among the reasons that Judge Robert S. Hough gave for denying his request for asylum was a claim that Gutierrez wasn’t really a journalist. “He didn’t really believe that Emilio was a journalist because he didn’t produce many articles he had written,” Molloy said, noting that Gutierrez’s house had been ransacked before he left and that Mexican papers weren’t as fastidious as, say, The New York Times at keeping clips. If you talk about the morgue at a Mexican paper, it is probably not a room where old issues are kept.

Nevertheless, she compiled well over 100 stories bearing his byline—and translated a few of them.

Still, Gutierrez and his son were put in a van and driven toward the border—and what he thinks would be certain death. A last-minute stay halted the van and bought Gutierrez a little more time and another shot at asylum.

The Association of Alternative Newsmedia, the National Press Club and other journalistic organizations have come out in support of Gutierrez. But the Trump Administration’s deep hostility to those seeking asylum from Mexico, along with his hatred of the press, does not bode well for him.

Bowden often wrote that Juarez is the city of the future.

Trump’s attacks on the press sound an awful lot like the Mexican general who threatened Gutierrez a decade ago.

Trump hasn’t started to actually kill journalists. But sending Gutierrez back to Mexico would be a start—it could seal the fate of one reporter and portend the future of journalism in America. f

Known as a wonky, pragmatic progressive who’s open to compromise, Girtz has a series of detailed policy proposals on issues like affordable housing, economic development and environmental

sustainability that can be viewed on his website.

Sims—the first black varsity athlete at UGA and a teacher for nearly three decades at Barrow Elementary—is generally considered one of the more conservative commissioners and usually backs the county staff’s recommendations. His campaign is less about specific proposals than a style of governing: He believes the government caters to intown “squeaky wheels” at the expense of those outside the Loop who don’t have time to attend meetings.

While he has expressed skepticism about many progressive policies, Sims such as fare-free transit, bike lanes, decriminalizing marijuana and tax incentives for affordable housing, he has said he’d let those ideas go through the committee system rather than use his power as mayor to block them.

Knight is running as a fresh face and a successful entrepreneur, although numerous former employees have accused him of wage theft, and three of his campaign managers have quit, with two defecting to Girtz. The first openly gay and Latino mayoral candidate in Athens history, he has combined progressive views on social issues with a business-friendly economic platform

and a right-leaning stance on public safety; for example, he is in favor of beefing up the local police force.

The Athens-Clarke County Democratic Committee has declared both Sims and Girtz to be “qualified Democrats,” while the majority of Republicans Knight supported Sims in a recent straw poll, and the progressive group Athens for Everyone has endorsed Girtz.

Are you riding your bicycle naked?

Sure, you can do it, but you certainly don’t have much protection in the event of a crash. Similarly, if you don’t include uninsured motorist coverage in your automobile insurance policy, you may be leaving yourself unprepared for the damages caused by careless car drivers.

Several recent collisions between motorists and cyclists have once again reminded us of the need for cyclists to protect themselves by insurance from the negligence of others. Many cyclists are unaware of the protections that can be included in their automobile insurance policies that provide coverage in the event they are injured by careless drivers. This coverage is not expensive to purchase, but may be invaluable in the event of an accident.

When a motor vehicle is insured, the policy of insurance may contain several different types of coverage. Liability coverage is required by law, in at least a minimum amount. All other coverages are optional. The one we are discussing here is uninsured motorist (UM) coverage.

What does it do? Your UM coverage acts in effect like additional liability coverage on the motor vehicle causing the damage. If that vehicle is completely uninsured, your UM coverage exists up to the amount set out in the policy. If the vehicle has only minimum or insufficient limits of liability coverage, your UM coverage can be added to those limits.

What does it cover? Just like liability coverage, UM coverage pays for all amounts owed by the careless driver of a motor vehicle for medical expenses, property damage, lost earnings, and pain and suffering, up to the limits of coverage.

Who is covered? UM coverage is provided for the person named as the insured in a motor vehicle insurance policy, and all relatives of that person living in the same household. The UM coverages in each policy on each relative living in the household all add together to make up the total limit of coverage.

Does UM coverage apply while I am riding my bike? Yes, this coverage follows every insured person, and comes into play if that person is injured by a motor vehicle. It therefore applies to bike riders and pedestrians, as well as to drivers and passengers.

How much UM coverage can I buy? By law, every agent selling car insurance must offer the client the option to purchase uninsured motorist coverage equal to the amount of the liability insurance limit. If your liability limit is $500,000, you can buy that amount of UM coverage. Frequently, without much (or any) discussion or consideration, the purchaser signs an application agreeing to lesser limits of UM coverage. This can be a mistake with serious consequences.

Are there conditions on the coverage? Yes, which is why it’s always important to read the policy.

Some auto policies require immediate notice of an accident, or UM coverage can be lost. After an accident with a motor vehicle as a cyclist or pedestrian, notifying your car insurance company might not be the first thing that comes to mind. Notifying your live-in grandmother’s auto insurer might never come to mind. Failure to notify all insurers with potential UM coverage might result in that coverage, which has been bought and paid for, becoming unavailable.

It would be horrible to be injured on your bike by a careless driver. It would be even worse if you had to bear all the expense of that injury yourself because the driver did not have enough insurance coverage. Don’t ride naked. Protect yourself.

Blount is the Blount Republicans’ favored candidate, while Edwards is endorsed by both A4E and the ACCDC, although the latter endorsement is complicated by Overend’s belief that the Democratic Party shouldn’t endorse candidates in nonpartisan races.

A4E endorsed Thornton while praising Valentine, local Democrats are fine with them both, and Republicans don’t like either one. Flip a coin.

Allison Mauldin, a prosecutor based in Greensboro and wife of Western Circuit District Attorney Ken Mauldin, is seeking to oust Norris. (Ken Mauldin has said he’ll resign if Allison is elected to avoid a conflict of interest.) She has criticized Norris for requiring Clarke County defendants to appear in court in Oconee County and vice versa. Public defender Lisa Lott is challenging Quick, arguing that Athens judges should be chosen by Athenians, not the powers that be in Atlanta. Voters’ choices are somewhat hamstrung by legal ethics that prevent the candidates from talking about most issues. It’s a nonpartisan race, but Norris and Quick have ties to the GOP, while Mauldin and Lott have ties to the Democrats. Based on their campaign contributions, most lawyers who know the candidates well seem satisfied with the incumbents.

10th CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (DEMOCRATS): This race has shades of Hillary Clinton versus Bernie Sanders, except in this case Chalis Montgomery is running on a Bernieesque platform, and Richard Dien Winfield is running to her left. Winfield, a UGA philosophy professor, has one big idea: a guaranteed federal job at $20 an hour that he believes will solve almost all of society’s ills.

Montgomery is a Barrow County music educator and mother of a child with a chronic illness who would have been kicked off her insurance coverage had the Affordable Care Act been repealed, she is running primarily on a platform of Medicare for all, although lately she has embraced a more limited form of Winfield’s job guarantee. Like the 2016 presidential primary, the race has gotten testy, with Montgomery decrying “misogynistic” attacks and Winfield claiming that Montgomery has been mischaracterizing his academic writing, which she says Republicans could use against him in the general election. A third candidate, Augusta nurse Tabitha Johnson-Green, entered the race late and has had little to say at candidate forums.

Williams served a term on the state school board before winning election to two terms on the Clarke County school board, so there’s no denying her experience. Part of the board that had to deal with financial mismanagement under former superintendent Lewis Holloway and was appalled by the Williams Cedar Shoals sexual assault debacle at the end of Philip Lanoue’s tenure, Williams sees her job as holding Means accountable and ensuring that CCSD is on sound fiscal footing. Gantt has experience, too, but from the inside: She was a CCSD counselor until 2015 and has seen the system’s problems Gantt firsthand. She aims to improve discipline by addressing the root problems facing students, rather than merely punishing them.

10th DISTRICT (REPUBLICANS): You know him, you probably hate him—U.S. Rep. Jody Hice. A former pastor and talk-radio host, Hice was Broun’s hand-picked successor when the controversial congressman ran for Senate in 2014. Unlike the flamboyant Broun, Hice has largely stayed under the radar since being elected, but in the past he espoused numerous controversial beliefs, saying that women shouldn’t run for office without their husbands’ permission, crusading to have the Ten Commandments displayed in government buildings, and criticizing Islam and homosexuality. Hice has rarely wavered in his support for President Trump’s agenda, giving him an A grade at a recent forum. He has an NRA endorsement and a 96 percent rating from the American Conservative Union. Fast-food executive Joe Hunt is running as a more moderate alternative to Hice. He takes issue with the combative tone of the Trump Administration and calls for a return to civility. Bradley Griffin, a former paratrooper who owns a digital marketing firm, has done little to distinguish himself from the other candidates. f

Neighbor Lady Makes Music Magic

ew small-scale shows possess the same magic as an outdoor AthFest Club Crawl gig; the ripe summer heat and cheap booze provide the perfect conditions for sonic enchantment. With a sorcerous sway, Neighbor Lady commanded one such performance at the festival in 2016, on the back patio of Little Kings Shuffle Club, with a twangy, reverb-soaked set that culminated, fittingly, in a captivating cover of The Cranberries’ “Dreams.”

It was apparent even then—barely a year into the group’s tenure—that singer and guitarist Emily Braden’s modest personal songwriting outlet was unfolding into a full-band force to be reckoned with. “I never thought Neighbor Lady would be a serious thing,” says Braden. “I

just thought I would play some songs with my friends and call it a day.”

The Rome native began writing her first batch of Neighbor Lady tunes sometime in 2015, before asking a few friends to join her live at what was originally planned to be a solo set. “After playing a few shows and seeing how people responded, it inspired me to be more serious and write more songs.”

The four-piece—comprised of a veritable who’s who of Athens indie-rock talent, including bassist Meredith Hanscom and former Dana Swimmers Jack and Maggie Blauvelt—began gaining traction around Athens and Atlanta on the strength of a profound chemistry and authenticity. (It also helped that Braden has the voice of a Southern seraph.) Former Reptar drummer Andrew McFarland soon took over the kit as the group began landing higher-profile gigs.

After much build-up, the crew began recording its debut album, Maybe Later, in 2017. “It was a very relaxed and stress-free environment to record in, and I hope we can do it [that] way every time,” says Braden of the process.

The band then signed to the small Sacramento, CA label Friendship Fever, home to fellow Athenians Deep State.

With a sound incorporating elements of rock, pop and country, Neighbor Lady might be one of the few bands capable of claiming to have opened for The Growlers and also toured with Futurebirds. Though the group’s stylistic diversity is evident on the seven-song record, where each player’s personality is uncannily distinct, Braden’s voice shines through the din like a lighthouse through fog.

“I went back and recorded the vocals when no one was in the house, and it made it so much easier for me,” says Braden. “I was able to experiment with harmonies and power through the songs in my own way.”

The opening track, “Let It Bleed,” wastes no time in pushing Braden to the edge of her comfort zone, as she belts with full emotion, “You have no idea what’s gotten into me!” The cathartic release is made even more powerful knowing the songwriter’s initial hesitance to take the project public. “All of these songs loosely touch on procrastination,” says guitarist Jack Blauvelt, who now lives with Braden in Atlanta. “Not the ‘I’m too lazy’ kind, but rather the feeling of being too scared to express your deepest thoughts and just pushing it off until later.”

With the recent release of Maybe Later, Neighbor Lady will play back-to-back release shows in Atlanta and Athens this week before heading out on an East Coast tour in July, as Braden and group inch ever closer to finding comfort in sharing those deep, dark thoughts with the public. “These songs just come out of Emily,” says Blauvelt. “They’re genuine, and I think that’s the best way to go about songwriting.” f

t’s no secret that there’s a lot of great live music in Athens. Thanks to two ongoing concert series recorded locally for broadcast on Athens’ NPR affiliate, WUGA 91.7 and 94.5 FM, that music is spotlighted for people both here and elsewhere to discover and enjoy.

“WUGA has always been supportive of local music,” says Chris Shupe, WUGA’s program director. “With Athens being such a local music town, I just felt like we needed to do more shows focused on what’s going on around here, whether it be original music coming out of bands based here or the incredible amount of music that comes through here.”

Caroline Aiken, the producer and host of one such program, “New South Showcase,” initially wasn’t looking to do a radio show. An accomplished musician herself, Aiken hadn’t thought about the possibility until she appeared on now-retired WUGA host Robb Holmes’ weekly live-music show, “It’s Friday.” “It was wonderful chance, as a musician, to put my foot into the community,” Aiken says.

After auditioning for another position on an early-morning show, Shupe asked Aiken if she had ever considered Caroline Aiken starting her own program. “That was the sign I needed,” Aiken says. “I bypassed the early-morning show and went straight into [‘New South Showcase’].”

Aiken taped her first few shows at The Foundry before setting up shop at Vega Studio on Milledge Avenue with the help of engineer Clay Hansen. In addition to hosting a live audience, since moving to Vega the show has incorporated a Facebook Live element to allow people to watch the performances remotely as they occur.

Part of what makes “New South Showcase” different from anything Aiken has done musically in the past is that the focus isn’t on her. Rather it’s about showcasing different featured musicians each month, which was something extremely important to her when creating the show.

“The first few shows at The Foundry, she was trying to do a lot of emceeing,” Hansen says. “Right away, she decided, ‘Well, A: I don’t want to hear myself talk, and B: It should be more about the music and less about me, so I’m going to stop putting myself in there.’”

Aiken wanted to utilize the show as a platform to highlight diverse talent from Athens and beyond for anyone willing to listen. After celebrating the show’s one-year

anniversary last month, Aiken says she is happy with how much it has brought the community together.

“There’s a circle that’s completed when you see the audience and the musicians having a really great experience,” Aiken says. “I want others to do the same. It’s like, ‘OK, I’m going to create this venue that glorifies the music, and it helps everybody.’”

Another local show takes a similar approach. On the other side of town in his Studio 1093, Jim Hawkins—whose engineering credits range from The Allman Brothers Band to R.E.M.—has been running his own series, “Music on the Boulevard,” for several years.

“I like to cut live. There’s an energy that comes from the collective spirit of all the musicians that’s greater than the sum of the parts,” Hawkins says. “I’m not so much into making big records anymore, but that radio show is just about exactly what I like to do.”

Hawkins began “Music on the Boulevard” with the old Last Resort club in mind. “[The owner] would publish a little book in the fall, and it would have a page in there about everybody that would play there,” Hawkins says. “You’d go through and you’d say, ‘Oh, who is this that I’ve never heard of? Boy, they look interesting.’ So, that’s what I want here.”

These two shows help contribute to Athens’ music scene by reaching into the community to bring people together and exposing people to music they wouldn’t otherwise hear. In addition, they serve as intimate venues outside of downtown where musicians can perform and people can truly listen. “We’re a music town, [and] this is the public radio station—we ought to have some shows that focus on what’s going on here musically,” Shupe says.

“New South Showcase” will tape its next episode Sunday, with performances from The Common People Band and LaChandra Burgess. A $15 donation is suggested for attendees. Jianna Justice Jams Again PLUS, MORE MUSIC NEWS AND GOSSIP

That’s been remedied with a five-song EP named The Movies that just came out on Marching Banana Records. It opens up with the shockingly good “Automatic Precision,” which flexes an asymmetrical post-punk muscle heretofore unheard in Justice’s work. Points of reference are a less macho Gang of Four and/or a less hyperkinetic Slits. The closing track, “Slam Dunk,” revisits this spirit but is more Pylon than, say, PIL. The three tracks in the middle are the kind of softer, singer-songwriter-ish material Justice has released before, but there’s a marked sense of experience here—in both fullness of composition and production itself—that’s welcome. I’m particularly partial to the AM Gold of “Release,” but your experience may vary. Anyway, check it out at jiannajustice.band camp.com and marching banana.bandcamp.com.

YIPPEE, IPPEE, EY, EY, AY, YEY, YEY: Echobass Records has a new release by Razzi King out named Razzin in Space.

There have been a couple of other new releases from the label over the past few weeks, Jianna Justice but I want to concentrate on this one for now. Its running length of 14 tracks is a bit daunting at first, but eventually rolls through smooth as butter. This is a straight-up house-music record of classic variations—think shades of Frankie Knuckles as filtered through an extremely relaxed Happy Mondays—but it still has some slices of King’s dubby fingerprints. All in all, it’s a fairly ambitious record for both King and the label, so take notice at echobass records.bandcamp.com.

NOISE ANNOYS: Athens’ Null Zone record label just released a live set by founder Michael Potter’s ongoing concern, The Electric Nature. Split into two tracks averaging 14-and-a-half minutes each, the live combo for this set was Potter and longtime Athens experimental heads Thom Strickland (Smokedog) and Michael Pierce (Leisure

Service). This was recorded almost two years ago at Atlanta’s Mammal Gallery, and it’s titled The Place of Dead Roads. It doesn’t really begin to offer any distinct dynamics until about six minutes into the first track, but after that point, it begins to head into a jazz arrangement with a drone undertone. The second track is, by comparison, a bit brutal and more aggressive by half. Ultimately, though, while this live set is not particularly essential listening, if you’ve got time and enjoy this sort of thing—as I clearly do—then vaya con dios.

FROM BOULDER TO BIRMINGHAM: Singersongwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sylvia Rose Novak came to Athens by way of Alabama. A quick look at her live schedule shows her to be among the hardest-working troubadours currently calling the Classic City home. To wit, she’s playing back-to-back shows Thursday, May 17 at Akademia Brewing Co. and Friday, May 18 at Saucehouse BBQ, and those are only two of tons of shows she’s got lined up in the coming weeks.

Plus, she just played two local gigs last week. My point is, simply, if you miss seeing her, it’s your own fault, and most likely your own loss, too. Her songs are dark testaments of the human condition, and she’s the only Athens artist this close to Emmylou Harris in, like, forever. PAPAS TAPAS: This is the third time in two weeks I’ve mentioned Marching Banana Records, but the label’s been quiet for so long and is now on kind of a tear. Not familiar?

These aren’t exclusive tracks, but they provide a really good taste of the label. record review Sarah Zúñiga: Someday Soon EP (Independent Release) Putting an intimate spin on the brand of folky jubilation made popular locally by groups like Family and Friends, singer-songwriter Sarah Zúñiga makes earnest, anthemic music that’s both celebratory and reflective. On her debut EP, the guitarist serves up seven pleasantly crafted nuggets of melodic folk-pop that rise above typical coffeehouse fodder thanks to Zúñiga’s strong voice and thoughtful arrangements. Particularly effective are the downtuned title track and rousing full-band closer, “Start Again.”

The highlight, undoubtedly, is “People Do Crazy Things for Love,” a sweet, stirring tune that earned Zúñiga a spot as a finalist for last year’s Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award and remains her most striking song to date. Catchy and with copious commercial appeal, it’s not hard to imagine the track soundtracking a network drama or blowing up adult-contempo airwaves. Its inclusion here has a slight if unintended diminishing effect on the EP as a whole, though its creator’s potential is evident throughout. [Gabe Vodicka]

SUNDAY: End an art-filled weekend with an artist talk and reception featuring oil painter Jeanne Whatley at the Oconee County Library on May 20 from 3–5 p.m. Currently on view through the end of the month, her paintings were selected from “Hope,” a larger series that began in 2013 while living in Abu Dhabi. Focusing on a small community of workers in the Shabiya area, her paintings originated as contemplations on the nature of hope—how it exists, how it is sustained and how it ends. Often depicted from a bird’s eye view, she paints abstracted crowds of people facing the sky as if looking to a brighter future.

Whatley and her family settled down in Bishop in 2014 after spending many years living across the U.S., Germany, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE. GROCERY NO. 3?: It’s not really accurate to refer to The Treehouse Market (8851 Macon Hwy., 706-850-4380) as a grocery store when it’s really more like a fancy convenience store, but it does have some staples and—what’s more important for this column—both sandwiches made to order and some hot foods. There’s a big counter that takes up a good bit of one wall when you walk in, with a chalkboard menu on the wall. Specials are listed on a sandwich board by the door, and there’s even a bit of seating, with a few tables and a comfy banquette.

The store’s offerings are in line with what you’d expect from the ritzy shopping center that also hosts the second location of Mama’s Boy and the brandnew The Falls: There’s a large selection of cigars in a custom-woodwork case, plus wine sippy cups and fine snackies (dry salami, cheeses, pickles, etc.), but there are also domestic beers and Slim Jims for the students in the area.

The sandwiches call to mind both Jimmy John’s (the Italian, with Genoa salami, pepperoni, capicola, provolone, Italian dressing, lettuce and tomato, is essentially the No. 5) and Em’s Kitchen (the Cuban is fairly similar, but maybe that’s because they’re both straightforward, with nothing weird).

Should the Reuben be on special, it’s a decent option, although the bread is maybe sliced a touch too thin, and the chipotle

beverages to round out your meal, or you can get a scoop of one of the deli salads in the refrigerated case: pasta, potato, etc.

The market offers pizza, too, although it seems at about the same level as that served at the roller rink, as well as baked goods supplied by a corporation, soup and a wide variety of coffee and tea drinks (including some aimed at children). Your kids will be intrigued by the high-tech milkshake/smoothie machine, the store has free Wi-Fi, and you can get gift baskets of sweets and snacks.

At the same time, everything kind of meets a need for quick, relatively inexpensive food, some of it hot. If you’d rather assemble your own sandwich or you’re doing some kind of zero-carb thing, you can also buy Boar’s Head meats and cheeses by the pound, sliced to order.

WINTERVILLE IS LIT: OK, that’s an exaggeration, but with Off the Vine opening, Wok Star still providing excellent actual Chinese food (although Too Sweetz bakery is no longer operational out of the same space) and Little City Diner killing it on pies and more, the sleepy town has a lot more going

on culinarily than you’d think. The opening of Peach Pit Cafe (321 Athens Road, 706899-0001), a brand-new barbecue place right across the street from Off the Vine, means the town has basically doubled its food options.

The interior isn’t anything fancy, but the people who take your order are friendly, and there are seats at the counter where you order, should you wish to converse. The menu is the kind of simply typed, straightforward single sheet on a colored piece of paper that you would expect of a country barbecue place, with descriptions in black and prices in red. You can get pork, chicken (not pulled; available by the half), ribs and brisket, most of which is available as a sandwich or a plate, with slaw, stew, chips and bread.

That’s about it. The choices are pretty simple.

The ’cue itself, unfortunately, could be better. The proprietors seem to take a light hand with the rub, so the meat doesn’t have a ton of flavor. The sauce is good, though, especially the one designated for the chicken, which is nearly straight vinegar and zips it up considerably. Y’all may be happy with that, but I’m a crazy purist who wants my barbecue to stand on its own without sauce.

The stew also gets a thumbs up: decently peppery, fairly finely textured, enough salt. Best of all is the cake (a chocolate marbled thing with thick chocolate icing on the day I went, but it varies), which you can choose instead of banana pudding for a little sugar. It’s a step up from the neon-colored soda-moistened stuff you get at most barbecue restaurants, for sure.

Wednesday through Saturday and 11 a.m.–3 p.m. on Sunday, which makes it a great addition to the local scene. It serves no booze but does take credit cards. f

Moms on Film A COMEDY, A DRAMEDY AND A FLABBY THRILLER

After dropping off their daughter, Maddy (Molly Gordon), for her senior year of college, McCarthy’s Deanna is dumped by her longtime husband, Dan (Matt Walsh), for a local Realtor (Julie Bowen). College has changed a little bit since Deanna was last in the classroom, but she becomes a hit after her daughter pulls off some teen movie makeover magic.

The siblings learn to like and love one another again thanks to a dance class that includes Timothy Spall and Joanna Lumley. Eventually, the aging dance troupe is invited on an all-expenses-paid trip to Rome after their flash mob goes viral.

The story, written by Meg Leonard and Nick Moorcroft, feels like it should be accompanied by a “Based on a True Story” warning, and Finding Your Feet is guilty of loading up on old-people jokes—laxatives, constipation, Viagra—and wisdom.

The Foundry · 8 p.m. · $30 Steve Earle’s “Copperhead Road” represented more than a welcome change of pace on FM radio. Its blend of country twang, bluegrass precision and Southern rock grit provided an incongruous yet ideal backing track for the songwriter’s dismissal of the war on drugs. It also set the pace for Earle’s 1988 album of the same name. On the A-side, socially aware lyrics about veterans (“Johnny Come Lately”) and the homeless (“Back to the Wall”) create a sense of unease more akin to heavy metal than forward-thinking country music. Three decades later, Americana’s elder statesman and his Dukes are taking a well-deserved victory lap—performing a still-relevant masterwork in its entirety every night on their current tour, which includes a stop in Athens Tuesday.
