Some parents also attended. “I am so quiet and shy, and my daughter is so outspoken,” Erica Gilbertson, Kaija’s mom, said of her daughter’s involvement. “And even though Kaija can’t vote, she can inspire others to vote and make [gun violence] their issue.”

Miles Anderson, Penelope’s father, was also at the event and echoed Gilbertson’s enthusiasm. “I’m extremely proud of Penelope and inspired by her, and it’s so cool I can say that,” he said.

Similar protests took place at other local schools, including Clarke Central High School and Hilsman Middle School. As many as 600 students reportedly walked out at Cedar Shoals High School. [Dan Jackson and Hailey Carson]

More Artsy Bus Shelters On Their Way With $2.7 million in SPLOST funding becoming available for new bus stops, Athens-Clarke County commissioners are debating whether to spend part of that money on new artist-created shelters like those installed on West Broad and Baxter streets a decade ago.

The commission’s Government Operations Committee has recommended building 15–45 new “artsy” shelters, some designed and built by artists and others prefabricated shelters that artists would decorate. “We are looking at them to help improve the aesthetics on some of our commercial corridors,” said Commissioner Andy Herod, the GOC’s chairman, at last week’s agenda-setting meeting.

The recommendation also calls for upgrading 41 stops with seating for two people at a cost of $3,000–$8,000 each and another 61 busier stops with covered shelters at a cost of $25,000 each. The artist-designed or decorated shelters would cost $32,500–$38,000. Commissioner Jerry NeSmith said he’d like to use that money to install eight additional ordinary shelters instead, especially on Atlanta Highway.

“People like the art bus shelters, but the people who are catching the buses want a shelter,” NeSmith said. “I don’t think people catching the bus care whether the shelter is art or not… I want to see a plan to get bus shelters at every location.”

Commissioner Mike Hamby chided NeSmith for not attending the GOC meetings. “What you would have heard was the main corridors will take the top priority for these shelters,” he said. Priority would be given to Lexington Road between the Loop and Whit Davis, Atlanta Highway between Epps Bridge and the mall, and Prince Avenue inside the Loop. The decorative stops not only make those corridors more attractive, but will help generate interest in Athens Transit, Hamby said.

Commissioner Melissa Link said the projects will help less-established artists get

a foothold in the world of public art. Later, she announced that she intends to vote against another agenda item: construction plans for a new fire station and cooperative extension office off Atlanta Highway.

Bids came in more than $2 million over budget, but that’s not why. Link said she

continues to object to the location. “The majority of users of this [extension] office tend to live on the Eastside,” she said.

The extension service has outgrown its West Broad Street office and successfully lobbied for SPLOST funds in 2010.

Commissioners considered UGA property off South Milledge Avenue, but UGA objected. Eastside sites were also considered, but commissioners decided to save money by building the extension office on a site they bought for a new Atlanta Highway fire station.

Commissioner Kelly Girtz asked what the county might get for selling the West Broad building, and whether there are opportunities to save on operating costs that might help close the budget gap.

Meanwhile, commissioners look set to abandon a block of Strong Street to pave the way for a Hotel Indigo expansion, tech incubator and county economic development offices. Where Are All the Food Trucks?

ACC began allowing food trucks to operate downtown two years ago, but there haven’t been many takers. Special events at county parks don’t require a permit, and those have been the most popular venues for food-truck sellers. Other times and places in parks, or a designated spot in front of City Hall on Thursday nights only, require a $515 annual permit. Only three sellers have ever applied for that permit, and only one (Chick-fil-A) currently holds one.

The food-truck ordinance came up for a scheduled review at a Legislative Review Committee meeting last week. The limitations on selling downtown were originally based on concerns from existing downtown restaurants about competition from food

Next month, commissioners on the LRC will discuss a possible evening curfew for children under 9 years old at the request of a local NAACP chapter, according to Assistant Manager Robert Hess. The proposal was assigned to committee by Mayor Nancy Denson, Commissioner Sharyn Dickerson said, after a citizen complained of seeing young children out after dark “and didn’t think it was appropriate.”

Congressional Candidates Debate Guns You have to hand it to Richard Dien Winfield—he is ambitious. The University of Georgia philosophy professor is attempting to win a deep-red congressional district on a New Deal-esque platform, and the May 22 primary is “of fundamental national importance,” he said. If and when he arrives in Washington, he believes his powers of persuasion will lead Democrats and Republicans alike to embrace a federal guarantee of a job for everyone at $20 an hour or more.

But would he vote for Nancy Pelosi— reviled as a San Francisco socialist by the right and a centrist by the left—for speaker? “I will be a candidate for that position if asked,” Winfield responded during a forum at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Apr. 16.

Chalis Montgomery, also running for the Democratic nomination in Rep. Jody Hice’s District 10, said Pelosi has become a divisive figure, but noted that she got a lot done during her first run as speaker, from 2007–2010. Experience and the ability to build coalitions are important, she said, and she would wait her turn for a leadership position.

One of the Republicans running to unseat Hice, Bradley Griffin, said it doesn’t matter who’s speaker. He used the question as an opportunity to pivot to what he called a bipartisan issue— the federal ban on industrial hemp production, which he said is costing American farmers and manufacturers $10 billion per year.

“Your Congress sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Montgomery quipped.

Griffin and Montgomery had a sharper exchange on guns, when Montgomery accused him of saying that liberals are the cause of gun violence in America.

“That’s a lie,” Griffin said. “Well, it’s on video,” Montgomery replied.

She went on to call for a ban on bump stocks (devices that turn semi-automatic rifles into automatics), stronger background checks and preventing domestic abusers from accessing guns. She accused Second Amendment supporters of forgetting the Second Commandment—referring to the prohibition of idols or graven images, in the Protestant tradition.

Griffin said he supports stronger background checks, but ultimately “‘shall not be infringed’ was written to mean ‘shall not be infringed,’” he said. He opposes raising the age to buy a gun to 21. More people are killed by stabbing than shooting, he said, and Switzerland has little gun violence despite permissive gun laws. The former paratrooper also defended AR-15s, the type of military-style rifle used in many mass shootings. The bullets “are made to bounce around and not kill you,” he said (although trauma surgeons say that tumbling quality makes the weapon far more deadly than most).

Winfield called for a ban not only on semi-automatic rifles, but pistols as well.

Guns are “a public safety threat and a threat to our democracy,” he said.

Both Montgomery and Winfield said they support public financing of elections and overturning Citizens United, the Supreme Court ruling allowing unlimited, undisclosed “dark money” in politics.

Griffin said he supports reform, but overturning Citizens United would silence valuable voices. A third Democrat in the race, Augusta nurse Tabitha Johnson-Green, said she would keep the existing $2,700 limit on campaign contributions but did not address contributions to super PACs. Hice and fellow Republican Joe Hunt did not participate in the forum. JohnsonGreen, Montgomery and Winfield will face off again at an Atlanta Press Club debate Thursday, Apr. 26, which will be aired at 3:45 p.m. on Georgia Public Broadcasting.

ABRAMS, EVANS DIFFER MORE ON STRATEGY THAN POLICY

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com When it comes to the issues that really move Democratic voters, it’s hard to see any daylight between the two candidates fighting for the party’s nomination in the Democratic primary. Stacey Abrams and Stacey Evans are both former legislators who share the same first name and a professional background as lawyers. The one real distinction between them is their race: Abrams is black, and Evans is white.

They both were hard-working lawmakers who fought for maintaining (in Abrams’ case) or even expanding (in Evans’ case) the sacred HOPE college scholarship program.

Both of them want a child to have a shot at a decent education, or a low-income family to have access to health care, or a woman to have the right to make her own choice when it comes to reproductive health.

When the House of Representatives was debating a bill in the 2012 session that would prohibit abortions after 20 weeks, Evans was nine months pregnant and on the verge of delivering her daughter, Ashley.

She made an emotional videotaped statement that was played in place of a floor speech, pleading with her fellow lawmakers not to restrict a woman’s right to choose.

And yet, when Planned Parenthood Southeast made their endorsement in the governor’s race, they ignored Evans and gave their backing to Abrams. They mentioned Abrams’ service on the board of NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia and her free legal work for women seeking abortions.

But they also noted Abrams’ opposition to the same 20-week abortion ban that Evans so eloquently spoke against as a legislator.

That’s the way it’s gone with most major endorsements. You have two candidates who have fought the good fight on issues that matter most to these groups. In many instances, the organizations would note

that the two candidates were so well qualified that they couldn’t make a choice and would offer their support to both of them.

But Abrams has won the bulk of these endorsements from organizations like the Georgia Association of Educators and the gay rights advocacy group Georgia Equality.

Jeff Graham, Georgia Equality’s executive director, pointed to the one real difference that seems to divide the campaigns: the paths they see to victory in November.

Abrams has been trying to motivate a diverse group of new voters who typically don’t vote or have rarely voted. Evans, on the other hand, believes there are votes that can be harvested by going after the more moderate independents or those who are disaffected Donald Trump voters but might be persuaded to come back to a Democrat.

It’s a strategy of persuading those who don’t vote versus those who do vote but might be lured to the other side.

The organizations who have been issuing these endorsements insist that they underwent a “thorough process” in evaluating the two candidates before making a decision.

Given the fact that Abrams and Evans are well-qualified candidates who have nearly identical positions on issues that matter to these groups, you wonder how thorough that process really was.

So far, neither campaign seems to have made much of a dent among the target audience. A poll conducted by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs indicated that 52 percent of likely Democratic voters are still undecided a little more than a month before the primary. About 33 percent of those surveyed said they supported Abrams, while 15 percent are backing Evans. Neither candidate is close to a majority, so they both have plenty of room to grow. f

education, job training and programs that mitigate the effects of poverty, such as free local bus service and affordable housing. She also favors the “aggressive elimination of cash bail” for minor local offenses, to be replaced with “a system of cite and release,” in which offenders are released on their own recognizance, echoing a similar decision from Atlanta’s city council. “Cash bail hits poor people in Athens, people of color and immigrants and LGBTQ… and criminalizes poverty,” she says.

MARSHALL TUCKER BAND

With Harry Sims giving up the District 2 commission seat he has held for the past 25 years in order to run for mayor in the upcoming May 22 election, two young newcomers to Athens politics are squaring off for the seat. Both are African American and under 30, yet they occupy extremely different cultural spaces and have different approaches to problems.

Taylor Pass, 28, is the grandson of the late Evelyn C. Neely, a civil rights activist who served on the Clarke County school board, worked with numerous charities and was known around town as the “Mayor of East Athens.” Pass is a big man, standing well over 6 feet, and he speaks softly and with enormous respect for the values he inherited from his grandmother: commitment to community, the need to serve people and the desire to bring positive change to Athens.

Pass says he tries “to walk a good path, trying to motivate young adults, what our elders stood for.” He continues, “I’m a strong believer in work, and I’ve got a good work ethic.” He is proud of the local high-school students he works with to get into good colleges and is well known as a mentor to young people in his district.

Pass played football at Cedar Taylor Pass Shoals High School and went on to get a football scholarship at historically black Morgan State University, where he studied sociology. He then went on to play football for the Arena Football League and was asked to help launch the China Arena Football League, where he served for three months as assistant coach for the Dalian Dragons. He still texts with his Chinese friends using an app that translates Chinese into English. Pass is currently a patient recruitment specialist and health navigator for the Athens Neighborhood Health Center.

His platform calls for an increase in minimum wage to $15 and increasing the high-school graduation rate to 90 percent— though state law prohibits ACC from raising the minimum wage, and the county commission does not oversee schools—as well as extending bus service “to the edges of the county” and taking on illegal game-day parking on private property for which the police fail to write citations. He also supports rolling back property tax increases for seniors in gentrifying neighborhoods to help them remain in their homes. Mariah Parker Facing off with Pass is Mariah Parker, 26, a UGA student who is reading for her PhD in language and literacy education and works as a teaching assistant. Parker also performs locally as Linqua Franqa, a name she uses to evoke communication across cultural boundaries, delivering a powerful message of equality and justice on Athens stages and in YouTube videos.

Parker radiates the passion of a fierce activist taking on issues of race, poverty and education, yet she is quickly learning the language of politics for her campaign, and is considering writing her dissertation on the topic of political language. Her main issues: counteracting poverty with

Parker is also taking on affordable housing as an issue, and points to a long waiting list of more than 1,000 waiting to get into a Section 8 apartment. She calls for “inclusionary zoning,” saying that the commission should obligate developers to include affordable housing in their plans.

She supports having a dedicated civil rights committee to hear out complaints, but some current commissioners don’t seem to consider offenses against LGBTQ individuals to be “real” discrimination, she says.

“All these struggles are connected,” Parker says. “When I look at equality in Athens, I’m looking at all marginalized people. They are put [into the margins] by the same systems, and all these people are hurting for different reasons.” f

Tasty Breeds of Seeds DAN BARBER WILL MAKE YOU WANT TO EAT YOUR VEGGIES

He had just received a crash course in the many modern techniques scientists can use today to develop new and improved produce.

But with all that tech power, Barber looked at the pale yellow butternut squash being prepped at a nearby table and reflected on how chefs have to go through “heroics” to bring out the sweetness of butternut squash. He couldn’t help but ask, “If you’re such a good breeder, why don’t you make a butternut squash that tastes good?”

The breeder looked at him and said, “No one has ever asked me to select for flavor before.”

Word spread about this new type of squash, and local New York growers began to ask for the seeds, ultimately delivering more Honeynut Squash to consumers. Now, the little squash Barber had developed for his white-tablecloth restaurant is sold to the masses at Trader Joe’s.

And that’s exactly what Barber wants.

That’s why in these beginning months of Row 7, he’s touring the country to put more new seed varieties in the hands of local farmers, to see how the seeds do outside of New York.

One of those farms is Bartram Trail Farm in Winterville, which grows vegetables exclusively for chefs. Co-owner Jason Jones says Barber’s focus on selecting for flavor makes his job a lot easier. “We con-

In that moment, said Barber to a packedout crowd of farmers, UGA students and other community members attending the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science’s spring lecture on Apr. 10, he had a new mission: How could he reintroduce flavor to the seed selection process?

“I started this with idea of being selfish for me, for flavors I want to work with in the kitchen,” he said, “but what’s become clear to me in the last 24 hours is the necessity of a company like this.”

Breeders, he learned, are mostly talking to large-scale farmers who often select against flavor and nutrition in favor of yield or pest and disease resistance. A chef, he thought, needs to be at that table, too.

“If the farmer is expected to derive flavors that I want, in some ways the seed is determining that. The cake is already baked by the time it’s in the hands of the farmer,” he said. “So, I realized that in all my obsession with farm to table, I needed to dial back.”

After years of collaboration with a host of breeders, Barber recently launched a seed company, Row 7, which has bred seven new varieties of vegetable seeds in a hyper-local environment. Among them is the Honeynut Squash, the answer to Barber’s ask for a tastier butternut variety, which he’s happy to serve in his restaurant—sans honey or maple syrup.

Bartram Trail has been experimenting with Row 7’s seed varieties for almost a year, and they’ve already found that one of their newer varieties performed well with a “superior flavor,” said Jones. They are also looking out for how each variety does resisting diseases and pests. “With flavor as our goal, we often tolerate some susceptibility to pests and disease,” he said. “After all, we are in the buggy, muggy South.”

If the project succeeds, it could help focus the narrative on why it’s important to support locally grown food, says Jones.

“You’ll go to the farmers market or to a local restaurant that supports our area farms and know the nuanced connection with flavor and taste is worth any extra effort and invite[s] you to explore a broader palate.”

As Barber sees it, to change the food system and rekindle consumer interest in vegetables, it all comes down to taste. The seeds may be the blueprint for the future of food, he says, but “it’s our job to ask for flavor.” f Follow Barber’s progress on Instagram at @chef danbarber and @row7seeds.

Pump You Up ANYONE CAN BE A STRONGMAN AT THE MAXIMUS Y CHALLENGE

roans, grunts and cheers filled the early morning air as families, friends, volunteers and passers-by watched 28 men and women compete in various events that tested physical and mental strength, speed and endurance.

The local YMCA hosted Athens’ third annual Strongman Maximus Y Challenge on Apr. 14, featuring five events split into men’s and women’s divisions, where each athlete competed in different weight groups.

Sled pushes, sandbag and keg carries, log presses—the events seemed unusual to an outsider, but served functional purposes in everyday life. Elyse Giles, the wellness director at the Y, explained that the muscles developed can carry over to tasks such as carrying groceries or moving furniture. “I

don’t think people realize the dedication it takes,” Giles said. “There are people here who you would not think could do this, and it’s a way for them to express their desire to be better.”

Participants’ athletic backgrounds covered a large range, from some who had competed for years to those who had started training a few weeks prior to the competition to a handful that registered as walk-ups the morning of the competition.

Michael Clancy, a competitor and co-owner of the soon-to-be Athens restaurant Maepole, picked up weights for the first time ever last year. “I just started working out 18 months ago,” said Clancy. “I didn’t start working out with the intention of competing in the Strongman. Founded by former bike shop owner Gene Dixon in 1980, Twilight is one of the premier events in criterium racing, as well as one of the most popular annual events in downtown Athens—second perhaps only to AthFest.

The Drapes

Although the band is made up of high-school students, its main goal is to transcend the label of “high-school band.” They want to be taken seriously as musicians, not viewed as a kid group. “Every high school has a band,” says bass player Roan O’Reilly. “But we don’t want to be that high-school band.”

The Drapes were originally a ’50s cover band that started jamming together during a July 2016 session of Camp Amped. They’ve since ditched the throwback sound and have begun dabbling in writing original songs. “After playing the same four songs over and over again, we got tired of doing covers. So, I think at one point, we were just like, ‘OK, we need to get it together and just start writing originals,’” says guitarist Dominic Bielli.

Talented Teens PREVIEWING THIS YEAR’S TWILIGHT KIDS’ STAGE

hanks largely to organizations like Nuçi’s Space, which hosts its Camp Amped summer and afterschool programs throughout the year, and Girls Rock Athens, whose Girls Rock Camp caters to aspiring young female performers, the talented teenagers (and preteens!) of Athens have been well-represented on local stages lately. On Saturday, three such groups will rock the Twilight Kids’ Stage in front of City Hall, with performers from Camp Amped’s spring session closing out the afternoon. Here’s a closer look at the artists on the lineup.

Connor Byers (11th-grader, North Oconee High School)

Connor Byers wrote his first song at the tender age of 8 and has been performing and writing music ever since. Since that first song, he has explored a wide array of styles.

Whether it be rap or rock, Byers hasn’t shied away from much of anything. “I think my music is a big blend of genres,” Byers says.

Although Byers says it is often a struggle to balance being a highschool student with being a musician, he explains that his biggest obstacle has been as an independent artist in general. Like many of his peers, Byers isn’t signed to a record label and is operating purely of his own volition. While that offers him more independence, it’s also taught him the importance of the less-glamorous PR and business side of the music industry.

“It’s certainly challenging. There’s a lot more freedom than if I was on a label, and I get to make all the decisions myself,” Byers says. “But it’s a lot more work, as well.”

Byers is currently working on releasing his second fulllength album, which he says will be his “biggest” and “most personal project” yet.

Part of that desire came from a wake-up call in which band members realized they weren’t being productive during practices. They were all very close and comfortable with each other, which was great for their chemistry, but not so much when it came to buckling down to work. “We would go practice at Dominic’s house and then, 15 minutes later, we’d end up at the park across the street from his house,” says lead singer Sachio Goodie.

So, the band began to rehearse at Nuçi’s Space to become more productive. “We were like, ‘All right, we’re paying for this practice space, so we should use our time wisely,’” Bielli says.

Basil had its genesis at a June 2017 session of Camp Amped. However, its members weren’t originally placed in a group together. Rather, they began playing simply as a result of liking The Drapes each other’s company. “It was really organic. [We] just stumbled into each other at the end of the Camp Amped finale and we were like, ‘Hey, let’s make music together,’” says guitarist Everett Vereen. “We got a show offer from Nuclear Tourism, and that’s kind of what made us start practicing, because we had the goal of a gig.”

After that show, they kept playing for the reason they started: because they all liked each other and wanted to have some fun. “I think that’s the whole point of having a band. We do it because we’re musicians and we want to have fun,” says drummer Jordan Rhym.

The band likes to explore a variety of sounds, with the goal of being quirky and experimental.

“The process is, ‘Hmm, this would be weird, let’s do it,’” Vereen says.

Although members Dhruv Prakash and Rhym will graduate soon, Basil still has plans to jam together whenever it gets the chance—it just might not be onstage. “We’re the least structured band,” Rhym says. Responds Prakash, “It’s a weird dynamic, but it works for us.” f

uitarist and vocalist Bryan Giles likes to have two complementary riffs before showing an idea to his bandmates in the Portland, OR-based hard-rock group Red Fang, because a standalone riff isn’t all that useful for writing a song.

“Some of the best riffs we’ve written are still sort of languishing in the practice space because they don’t have a direction,” he says. “It’s like, ‘God, that riff’s great, but nothing works with it.’ If it’s going to be that problematic, it’s sort of heartbreaking.”

“As far as the moods that we try to create with our songs, that song is particularly nasty,” he says. “We’ve put it in the set before and found it had a sort of finality to it. It’s pretty high-drama, with the long, ugly riff at the end there. It makes a great set closer, from a dramatic standpoint.”

Imagining the discarded riffs on file in Red Fang’s studio is a guitar nerd’s wet dream. Across the band’s four-album catalog, it has produced some of the most memorable hooks in modern metal, consistently delivering absolutely crushing breakdowns with dual guitars, bass and drums interlocking as one. Where many of their peers get overly caught up in tones and technicality, Red Fang plays with basic dynamics to a far more powerful effect.

And in a genre populated by moody artistes, Red Fang is plain silly. For example, most of the world was introduced to the band by its music video for “Prehistoric Dog,” which features the members shotgunning beers until they actually vomit.

Speaking to Flagpole ahead of Red Fang’s set opening for Clutch at the Georgia Theatre, Giles says he never takes himself— or his band—too seriously.

“We’re knuckleheads,” he says. “We’re just not serious dudes. I couldn’t fight my way out of a paper bag, so I can’t imagine putting on spikes and leather, basically armoring up and putting on some toughguy facade. It’s like, OK, you’re heavy metal and you have the evilest riffs, or whatever, but you’re still the court jester. You’re a musician. In the Middle Ages, you’d be jumping around in tights with a lute.”

Red Fang’s messy, beer-and-bong-water-soaked sound is epitomized by “Throw Up,” a six-and-a-half-minute epic off of its second studio album, 2011’s Murder the Mountains. On top of filthy sludge-metal riffage, the lyrics are, well, gross: “If it’s blood that you need to make the pills go down/ I will spill the blood/ If the flies that

But the song isn’t totally ghoulish. In fact, Giles says the original lyrics in the chorus were inspired by dreary Pacific Northwest weather: “Rain, rain, please don’t go away/ I need something to complain about.” He decided that sentiment was too cheesy, however, and ultimately wrote about “how life sucks and you need to reject those negative elements and focus on the positive.” He settled on: “It’s a puzzle that we figure out/ Take the hate and you spit it out.”

“For as grisly as that song is, the chorus is probably one of the most positive lyrical things I’ve ever done,” he says. “At the time, I asked the band, ‘Is this too optimistic?’”

Though Red Fang is often categorized as stoner metal, Giles says that’s misleading.

These aren’t musicians who tend to ruminate on a single blues riff for minutes on end.

“We’re more hyperactive than that,” he says. “Stoner metal, I think, is pretty literal.

It’s about smoking weed and tripping out.

These songs kind of create this world, and you’re in it, you know?… I think if you’re looking for a stoner-rock band and you pick up one of our records, you might be disappointed. We’re a rock band, really—a hardrock band.” f

Its title is German for “yearning” or “wistful longing,” and it seems apropos considering he describes the record as being written in the aftermath of family deaths and the accompanying introspection. This music isn’t always particularly somber or melancholy, though.

Death,” “Bluebird” and the drowsy but Tin Pan Alley-ish “Even If,” there are elements here I had a hard time reconciling. Opening track “Going Home” has a jauntiness that is off-putting, as does album closer “Childhood.” The meat’s really in the middle with this one, but even then, it’s a listen that demands discernment. STRUM ALONG: Perfect Attendance Records released the new record by Dimmen last week, and its 11 tracks, compiled under the title O, are well worth exploring. While decidedly experimental, most of that aspect can be accredited to arrangement and instrumentation. Otherwise, O follows a fairly traditional pop framework of top-line melody and nod-worthy rhythm. If it is indeed an experiment, it falls within the tradition of, say, Gastr del Sol or Tortoise, not Merzbow. Hear for yourself at dimmen.bandcamp.com.

release from Saline, You Did It to Yourself. On this release, the band reaches outward and stretches its songwriting to new lengths. Gone are the difficult-to-grab experimental jags, and in their place are well-rehearsed and aggressively played songs. It’s a great collection of shoegaze tunes, creative explorations of layered vocals and a few straightahead pop numbers. For the old people in the back, yes, there’s a definite 1990s mood and feel that runs through this, but that won’t last if you listen with fresh ears, so do that. HOME AGAIN: Several years ago, songwriter Enoch Bledsoe moved from Athens to Asheville, NC, and as far as this column is concerned, it was a bummer, because that meant I would need to stop covering his music, as he was no longer local. However, he’s moved back to town, which means I have free rein to tell you that his band Ancient Whales has never failed to get under my skin in a very good way. The band is infectiously tuneful and ardently pop-oriented in that classic indie/garage way that feels like a real shot in the arm.

OPERATOR, POCKET CALCULATOR, ET AL: I have no idea exactly who or what summermemorycenter is, but I’ve had a fine time listening to the four tracks available on the newly released, all-instrumental nightmaninspace EP. It has a distinctly old-school feel, with its vintage-sounding keyboards and synths, yet none of these are exhibited in any sort of purposefully nostalgic way. The brevity of this can make it feel more like a demo than a proper EP, but again, I’ve no idea. I can attest, though, that it’s not at all a collection of throwaways or junk. Sounds and Shadows VISIT ATHICA BEFORE IT RELOCATES

experimenting with different styles of rivets and magnets and squiggly-looking metal parts. That set the tone for the amount of detail that I wanted to show starting when the curtain opened,” says Klainbaum.

Luckily, a friend introduced him to visual artist Phil Jasen, who then brought Anthony Gaskins into the fold, and they focused on bringing the physical characters to life, allowing Klainbaum the time to focus on storyboards.

Along with artist Laura Maria Ramirez, who also assists in puppeteering, Klainbaum and his new troupe met at his home studio roughly once a week over the course of two years to develop “Lupita’s Revenge.”

“The screen was completely fabricated by Matt Zbornik, who creates one-of-a-kind furniture and sculptures. He stopped by my house one day and saw the work in progress,” says Klainbaum. “I showed him the locomotive and my pathetic screen made of old lumber and shower curtains. He looked sad, and maybe it was a wave of sympathy or something, but he then invited me to his studio every day for a week to design and assemble our current screen, which is a work of art and almost a character in itself, and that raised the ante even more for us.”

The shadow puppetry is accompanied by a live score by Tango Hambre, a group comprised of Megan Cole on vocals and ukulele, Keiko Ishibashi on violin, Elijah Neesmith on bass, Jeremy Raj on guitar and Klainbaum on accordion. In addition to performing classic tangos, a handful of Mexican rancheras and even a couple of jazz standards thrown in between scenes, the musicians serve as foley creators, synchronizing sound effects to enhance the visual production.

With performances at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and Barking Legs Theater in Chattanooga under their belts, the performers intend to take their van full of puppets and a few hundred pounds of gear on the road for a week-long tour of New York and Philadelphia. Until then, the troupe will offer two final local performances this week: Thursday, Apr. 26 at ATHICA and Sunday, Apr. 29 at Creature Comforts. Both events kick off at 7 p.m. with an hour-long reception, and attendees are encouraged to look behind the scenes following the performance. Movie Misfires THREE DISAPPOINTING FILMS OFFER UNSTEADY ENTERTAINMENT

THE PARTY (R) Kristin Scott Thomas stars as Janet, whose recent appointment as shadow minister for health is the cause for the titular celebration. Unfortunately, Janet and her friends are way too unpleasant a group with which to party. Janet’s long-suffering husband, Bill (Timothy Spall), is DJing the record player far too diligently; April (Patricia Clarkson) takes “bitter pill” way too literally; her significant other, Gottfried (Bruno Ganz), is a platitude-spewing German life coach; same-sex MayDecember couple Jinny and Martha (Emily Mortimer and Cherry Jones) might have more than one life-changing announcement to make; and cokehead banker Tom (Cillian Murphy) brought a gun, but not his wife.

An appealing cast at the top of its game tries to conceal the ugly faults of their characters with model performances, but every line of dialogue is buried under 6 feet of subtext. Writer-director Sally Potter (Orlando) hits her bloated, obvious targets with ease, but her overprivileged, elitist implements are way too unpleasant.

Fortunately, the party moves swiftly and barely lasts over an hour (71 minutes, to be exact, and its credits are surprisingly lengthy). The film fleetingly entertains when it deploys its caustic wit intelligently rather than obviously; disappointingly, these partygoers’ reveals are more predestined than authentic.

SUPER TROOPERS 2 (R) Comedy sequels are tricky enough without the added challenge of continuing a minor hit nearly two decades later. The boys of Broken Lizard return for their first widely released collaboration since 2006’s weakly funny Beerfest.

(Anyone actually see or even remember The Slammin’ Salmon or Freeloaders, both of which have appeared since?) Talk about diminishing returns: Broken Lizard peaked early, with 2001’s Super Troopers. Every subsequent movie has been less and less funny.

Going back to the original well does not help stoke the creative fires. In Super Troopers 2, the boys decide to strip-mine our northern neighbor through antique Canadian stereotypes writers should have abandoned years ago. The nominal plot used to get Thorny (director Jay Chandrasekhar), Foster (Paul Soter), Mac (Steve Lemme), rookie Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske) and the roundly disliked and dislikable Farva (Kevin Heffernan) back in uniform alleges that part of Canada actually belongs to the state of Vermont. Being former Vermont state troopers, the gang, led by Captain John O’Hagen (Brian Cox), is tasked with smoothing over the transition.

Instead, they get in a pissing contest with the local Mounties (the wasted trio of Tyler Labine, Will Sasso and Hayes MacArthur) and discover a passive smuggling operation with plenty of fake iPhones, pills and machine guns to sell in the United States.

As a former hockey player/small-time Canadian mayor/bordello owner, Rob Lowe seems to be enjoying himself more than most anyone in the audience will. For anyone who does not race out of the theater immediately, the few outtakes included in the credits are funnier than the movie itself. f

When The Athens Republique finally arrived from the stacks, it provided a window into the African-American community here in Athens after the boll weevil had begun to consume the cotton crops in Clarke and the surrounding counties. The short-lived newspaper included lots of social notes, as did all local newspapers of the time. There is a rich record of the community surrounding downtown in areas later torn down to make room for “progress,” involving names still familiar in Athens— Derricotte, Heard, Wilson, Grimes, Harris, Smith, Jackson, etc. In the Jan. 5, 1922 issue, there was an account of local African-American citizens celebrating the 59th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation a few days earlier in the Morton Theatre. Now, almost 100 years later, the effects of slavery and its aftermath still afflict our city and our nation.
