Sheriff Reverses ICE Policy

Commissioners Commish ACC commissioners didn’t have much to discuss with state legislators during their twice-annual meeting last week—probably because commissioners have stopped bothering to ask the local delegation to do anything. Sen. Bill Cowsert (R-Athens) noted that legislators didn’t receive any local requests before the session that wrapped up last month. “We’ve either given up, or y’all are doing a great job,” Mayor Nancy Denson said.

Denson did ask one last time for lawmakers to return local elections to November—they’ve been in May since 2012—when turnout is higher. The Augusta delegation has blocked such a move in the past, believing it’s easier to elect Republicans to local nonpartisan offices in conjunction with partisan primaries.

“Better participation, no matter which party you’re in, is better for the country,” Denson said.

Commissioner Andy Herod pushed for raises for UGA employees. “I know it’s self-serving, but any time you give UGA employees a raise, it helps our local economy,” said Herod, a geography professor.

Commissioners also asked, once again, for the authority to use radar to enforce speed limits on residential streets. Sen. Frank Ginn (R-Danielsville) again suggested speed humps, to which commissioners again responded that they’re expensive and not always a good solution to slow speeding cut-through drivers.

As far as what legislators wanted to talk about, Cowsert said he’s proud of the state income-tax cut the legislature passed, as well as increased funding for K-12 education. Freshman Rep. Jonathan Wallace (D-Watkinsville) said he is eager to buy new voting machines that will print paper receipts. Georgia’s current voting machines were purchased in 2002, and Microsoft no longer supports their software, he said.

Wallace also touted a bill allowing telecoms to lay broadband fiber along state highways, although a bill easing regulations on small-cell wireless technology failed because cable companies wanted lower franchise fees in exchange, leading lobbyists for

cities and counties to oppose it. Ginn said ACC’s franchise fees—charges for utilities to run lines on public land—are reasonable, but “there are some bad actors out there.”

Denson and commissioners stressed that they want to maintain control of local right of ways.

At the Apr. 10 work session, commissioners also heard from human resources officials who said salaries for ACC employees still haven’t caught up with the market since the recession ended, so turnover is increasing, especially among law enforcement and bus drivers. A full study will be presented in May. In addition, Transportation and Public Works Director Drew Raessler gave a proposal for a local streetlight utility.

Although Georgia Power has installed more energy-efficient LED bulbs—which many people don’t like because their blue tint increases glare—ACC hasn’t seen any savings on its power bill, Raessler said. A utility would also give the local government more flexibility in terms of where to place streetlights.

Just a week after cutting the ribbon on a new 1.8-mile stretch of the North Oconee River Greenway between the Lexington Road park-and-ride lot and College Station, Leisure Services officials presented plans for the next leg of the Firefly Trail running from the Loop to Winterville. And they showed commissioners a draft of a master plan for Memorial Park. Inadequate parking is affecting the surrounding neighborhood, so the plan calls for building a small parking deck into the hill near the entrance, with a basketball court on top. The plan also calls for completely renovating Bear Hollow Zoo, a second dog park next to the current one, a larger playground and pool, a kids’ “adventure trail,” ecological improvements to the park’s lake, an interpretative wetland at the old swimming hole and a larger facility for the Athens Creative Theater, with Quinn Hall becoming a rentable space that could also be used for summer camps. The next step is to prioritize the projects and estimate costs. [BA]

The Blue Wave WILL IT WASH OVER GEORGIA LIKE THE REST OF THE NATION?

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com The signs seem to point to a comeback this fall by Democrats. More than 30 Republican congressional incumbents aren’t running for reelection. President Trump’s low approval ratings (still in the low 40s) have produced an energized base of Democratic activists who have done such things as elect Sen. Doug Jones in Alabama.

The talk of a possible blue wave intensified last week when U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) said he would not run for another term in the House, ending a 20-year career in Congress. Ryan’s retirement was seen in many quarters as another troubling sign for Republicans who already faced the prospect of losing control of the House. By not choosing to stand and fight, they contend, he’s damaging the morale of Republicans who are running for reelection.

But there’s a possibility the wave could miss Georgia completely at the congressional level. That’s because skillful gerrymandering by the Republican leadership in the General Assembly has drawn a set of congressional districts that are so deep red they’re almost fire-proof. Republican Reps. Tom Graves, Barry Loudermilk, Doug Collins, Jody Hice, Rick Allen, Buddy Carter and Drew Ferguson will be difficult, if not impossible, to dislodge.

The two districts that might produce competitive races feature incumbents Karen Handel in the 6th Congressional District and Rob Woodall in the 7th District. They have both drawn a flock of Democratic opponents, some of whom are raising serious money. Their districts are also trending a bit more Democratic in recent cycles.

The 6th District in the northern Atlanta suburbs set a record last year for the most expensive congressional special election ever. Handel prevailed over Democrat Jon Ossoff, but only by four percentage points.

The 7th District includes a wide swath of Gwinnett County, which has become Georgia’s most rapidly diversifying county thanks largely to an influx of immigrants.

Woodall has not faced serious opposition in his four campaigns for Congress, winning each with 60 percent of the vote or more against negligible Democratic opposition.

But several Democrats are gunning for him this year: Carolyn Bourdreaux, David Kim, Ethan Pham, Kathleen Allen, Melissa Davis and Steve Reilly.

Bourdreaux, a Georgia State professor, might seem better suited for a legislative race. She was once the budget officer for the state Senate and has a deep knowledge of the state budget. But so far she has raised more money ($471,281) than anybody in this race—including Woodall, who has put up the modest total of $385,486. Kim and Pham are right behind them, each having raked in contributions of about $173,000 apiece. Kim, an educational publisher, has also put $228,000 of his own money into his campaign. The other candidates have raised less than $35,000 apiece.

In the 6th District, Democrats Kevin Abel and Bobby Kaple have emerged as the chief threats to Handel. Each candidate has raised more than $150,000 so far, an amount that will surely increase if one of them should win the Democratic primary.

They both have taken sharp positions against Trump on the issues of health care and immigration (Abel himself is an immigrant from South Africa). Kaple goes so far in one of his TV spots as to say, “Thank God for Obamacare,” a statement you would have heard few Democratic candidates dare utter two or three years ago.

Those are the most likely places to look for a blue wave. If it’s more widespread than that, you’ve really got a game-changer. f

A “super cool” 35-acre mixed-use development including a 3,000-seat music venue is planned for the the old Westclox plant off Newton Bridge Road, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported last week.

The project’s developers, UGA graduate Michael Dinerman and Jennifer Davidson, have been eyeing the property for more than two years. Dinerman, an Atlanta real estate developer, said he has seen similar adaptive reuse projects in Atlanta and noticed that Athens lacks a large music venue. In addition to the music venue, they want to build about 100 apartments, “maker space” for craftspeople, retail space and three or four restaurants. Terrapin Brewery has also signed a long-term lease for warehouse space at the development. Terrapin plans to occupy the warehouse space this October.

Construction would begin in January and be completed in the spring of 2020.

Dinerman compared the project—called General Time—to The Battery, the mixeduse development at SunTrust Park, the new Braves stadium in Cobb County. It’s also similar to the Southern Mill adaptive reuse project underway off Bryan Street nearby.

It’s a “feel good” story that is messy, imperfect and therefore useful. “Can you imagine the courage,” Zomlot asked, “to fire a bullet into the air to protect those soldiers?”

As we wade through a tedious conversation here in the U.S. about what constitutes “peaceful” protest while the state has a monopoly on violence and right-wing maniacs and Democratic centrists alike accept it, it is easy to dismiss peace. It is, in its current context here, employed as a conversation ender, mostly. Zomlot’s anecdote is a conversation starter. A “commitment to avoid the gush of blood,” Zomlot said, is not easy, but if done right is “more powerful—and it provides results.”

Towards the end of the talk, Zomlot extracted the mirth from his voice and moved away from peace towards “justice,” and what that might look like. It must begin with acknowledging what happened to the refugees, which includes people like him (he was born in the Shabura refugee camp in Gaza). “People had to leave their home at gunpoint,” he said. “Denying what happened to them won’t lead to solution.”

He wondered aloud whether he would want to return to where his family was removed, where his “father lost his home and property,” where it now looks nothing like he or his family would remember. He isn’t sure what he would do if he had the choice—because he does not. He should be able to “choose freely,” and right now he isn’t allowed to choose at all. Currently, charged-up, fully-armed IDF soldiers look across a fence and view Palestinians like Zomlot as “a demographic threat” to Israel.

Zomlot eventually arrived at a heartening, speculative-fiction-like solution—one that he stressed was his belief, not the official stance of Palestine or Abbas. What he envisions eventually is “a two-state solution that is virtual,” he said. In name only, the virtual two-state would exist to satisfy the concerns of Palestinians and Israelis, but would not need to be enforced or even considered.

Strive for District 5 THE QUIET INCUMBENT, THE VOCAL UPSTART AND THE POLITICAL NEWCOMER

T

he race for Athens-Clarke County Commission District 5 pits the cool, experienced incumbent against the surprisingly knowledgeable and youthful upstart and the cheerful, successful entrepreneur—all with a good grasp of the issues facing the county as a whole and the northwest Athens district in particular.

Commissioner Jared Bailey has been heavily involved in local civic life and the music scene for 30 years. He founded this publication, launched AthFest more than 20 years ago and co-owned and managed the 40 Watt Club, among other business ventures. Bailey refers to himself as a “social entrepreneur” and can point to numerous “green” projects he has undertaken or supported as commissioner, including

taking the easy way out. Finding new ways to move forward takes imagination, faith and a willingness to take on some risk.”

One issue that has dogged Bailey is his residency. For several years, he lived with his wife in Oconee County while maintaining a legal residence within District 5, but now he has moved back into the house on Marsha Court he has owned since 2004.

Bailey doesn’t speak much behind Jared Bailey the rail and tends to work outside of the public eye, which may have left him open to his challengers, each of whom suggest they will offer improved “transparency.”

Tim Denson, an activist and 2014 mayoral candidate, espouses a comprehensive view of the county’s business that took shape during his consistent and voluntary attendance at commission meetings. He worked with Occupy Athens and later founded Athens for Everyone to support the poor and the working class.

Denson’s platform includes “local first” economic development, affordable housing, local civil-rights legislation and support for black-owned businesses. Bailey echoes some of the concerns many have voiced about Mayor Nancy Denson, and as the incumbent he speaks knowledgeably of the challenges of merely putting issues up for a vote. “The mayor has absolute power to put items on the agenda,” he says. “[District 3 Commissioner] Melissa Link once asked the mayor what it would take to put a ban on plastic grocery bags on the agenda. She replied, ‘You’re going to have to have a new mayor.’”

Bailey also offered his vision of economic development, citing a recent study about attracting creative types in their 30s. To lure this important demographic, which every city and town seems to be pursuing, Bailey said the commission is looking at improving amenities such as alternative transit, accommodations for pedestrians and cyclists, pocket parks and green spaces, and local investment capital.

“True justice should be a priority for everyone,” Denson says.

Denson also cites other examples of his contributions as a local activist, including successful campaigns to implement Sunday bus service, living wages for county employees and body cameras for local police.

Also in the race is Danielle Benson, an entrepreneur who owns the Epps Bridge Massage Envy franchise and recently launched a construction firm with her husband, Reese, when he left the family business a few years ago. Why does Benson (all these rhymes!) want to be on the ACC commission? “I want to serve Athens,” she says. I’ve been given a lot by this city… and I felt like it’s my turn to give back to Athens.”

Her platform offers a clear alternative to her rivals. On economic development, she focuses on marketing Athens: “I would celebrate artists and small businesses. I think Athens needs a brand,” she says, referencing campaigns by the Athens Downtown Development Authority, Convention and Visitors Bureau and ACC Economic Development Department. “You wouldn’t know it was the same town— nothing says that we are Athens.”

Emphasizing the importance of business, Benson wants to ease regulatory challenges. “I have spoken with a lot of business owners,” she says. “We have a perception… that Athens is unfriendly to business.”

Benson—who consistently votes in GOP primaries and has donated to Republican candidates, according to voting and campaign finance records—is referred to by the progressive group Athens for Everyone as a “solid Republican with no platform,” a characterization she bridles at, calling herself an independent.

Yet even with her business-first image, Benson is vocal on social issues as well.

She is enthusiastic about her experience with the Citizen Police Academy, a program for Athens residents who want to learn more about local law enforcement.

From her experience, which included ride-alongs with officers, Benson says she learned that “ACC police has a 100 percent commitment to mitigate bias and profiling.” Programs provide “continuing training [to help officers] learn how bias affects us, and to let go of that bias… Our police department is taking every step they can.”

According to her A4E candidate response, Benson also supports marijuana decriminalization, the establishment of an Athens Civil Rights Committee and improved bike and pedestrian infrastructure, all of which place her in the progressive camp.

Benson also says she would work for her District 5 constituents by helping establish a police substation and making the Prince Avenue corridor safer for cyclists and pedestrians. f

It’s worth noting that there are, in fact, many weekends during the season, each with its own promise of moderate temps, abundant sunshine and justifiable day-drinking. Yet here we sit, staring down more than a half-dozen anticipated annual events scheduled to occur in the coming few days. (There’s also a typically heavy slate of weekly goings-on; see The Calendar on p. 20.)

Protect Athens Music 40 WATT CLUB · 4 P.M. · FREE!

Started in 2011 as a way to connect Athens musicians with legal advice and resources both locally and outside the Loop, the Protect Athens Music conference returns to the 40 Watt Wednesday for an eighth edition. A collaboration between the University of Georgia’s School of Law and Music Business Program, the always-enlightening event features industry insiders discussing various music-business-related topics, including promotion, recording, touring, ticketing and more. This year’s conference begins with a networking hour at 4 p.m. featuring music from The Broken String Band, followed by a keynote address from former Flagpole music editor and Davis Entertainment Law founder Michelle Davis. A panel discussion, “Amateur to Entrepreneur: How to Be a Musician and a Professional,” closes out the event. [GV]

It’s hard to believe that it’s only been four years since Creature Comforts exploded onto the local, state and even national craft beer scenes, considering the brewery has already expanded production at its original Hancock Avenue location in the old Snow Tire building downtown and is nearing completion on a second brewery at the old Southern Mill on Bryan Street just north of Boulevard.

Creature Comforts—founded by Adam Beauchamp, Chris Herron, David Stein and Blake Tyers in 2014—is celebrating with a weekend of music, tours of the new facility and, of course, lots and lots of beer. Festivities kick off at 3 p.m. Friday with the release of Legend Has It, a dry-hopped pilsner in honor of Killer Mike’s birthday, and a hazy IPA called Illuminating the Fog. Taylor Smith & The Roamin’ Jasmine, Clip Art, Squalle, Blanko, Luxury Vehicle and Robbie Dude will perform.

Saturday, you can tour the Southern Mill brewery from 10 a.m.–noon for $10. Then, from 1–10 p.m., visit the downtown brewery for bands (Cougar Sweat, The Hernies, The Artisanals, Oak House and Velveteen Pink) and brews (including all the usual favorites; hard-to-find hits like The Curious No. 7, Emergence, Southerly Love and Brettomatic; and a make-your-own Paradiso bar with tart Athena, fruit juices and syrups). Admission is $25 and includes a souvenir glass and three beers. If you want to beat the crowd, a $40 VIP option is available that offers entry at 11 a.m. and includes an additional beer.

Sunday is the same deal, except the festivities run from 1–6 p.m., and The Shoal Creek Stranglers, Blue Yonder, Little Gold and Rose Hotel will perform.

In its 11th year, Record Store Day is officially an international affair, with hundreds of independently owned stores in dozens of countries worldwide listed as participants on the event’s website. Here in Athens, two longtime local shops will be open from 8 a.m. slinging lots of exclusives, plus their normal stock. Wuxtry Records, at the corner of College and Clayton downtown, will serve up free doughnuts and coffee for early birds, while Low Yo Yo Stuff, a few blocks west on Washington Street, will feature guest DJ sets throughout the day, plus $1 deals on hundreds of records and cassettes. (See p. 13 for a list of employees’ picks for the best RSD releases.)

One Athens store, however, is opting not to participate.

Chris Razz, the owner of Secret Sounds, says he decided to skip this year’s RSD because the 2017 event left a bad taste in his mouth.

“In my opinion, the RSD thing has outgrown its usefulness and purpose,” says Razz, echoing critics who say that, in addition to clogging up vinyl pressing plants, the event offers little to no financial benefit for smaller stores. “No store can afford to buy all those titles on one day… I am still sitting on unsold non-returnable inventory from last year.

So I have decided not to participate this year. I will be on the beach instead.” [GV]

Dancing With the Athens Stars THE CLASSIC CENTER · 7:30 P.M. · $21

After 10 years and over $1 million raised, Dancing With the Athens Stars returns to the Classic Center to raise money for Project Safe. In a nutshell, it goes like this: Local “celebrities” get paired up with professional dance instructors to compete for two awards, Audience Favorite and Judges’ Favorite. “Celebrities” is in quotes because Athens has such a unique relationship to the word. Athens loves its radio personalities just as much as its bank managers, and it’s much more than just an opportunity to giggle at your boss clogging in front of hundreds of people.

A fun fact about receiving government grants for a women’s shelter or pretty much any nonprofit organization: Those grants are often earmarked for certain uses, which can leave organizations unable to provide other services that their community might desperately need. Donations from the public aren’t bound by any laws, and can be spent at an organization’s discretion. That’s great news for an organization with as much going on as Project Safe, which provides services ranging from support groups to rapid rehousing for abuse survivors and their dependents. It also provides education and outreach by offering presentations and training on domestic violence and safety training to the public. It maintains a confidentially located emergency shelter that it was in the process of expanding at the time of last year’s event, which raised over $129,000.

Dancing is fun, but domestic violence is not, and Project Safe seems to understand how to balance the seriousness of its cause with the levity of watching Chris Shupe dust off his jumpsuit and treat us to his rendition of “Burnin’ Love” after famously retiring his Elvis tribute act in the winter of 2016. Each team’s performance is prefaced by a short video featuring a training montage and the participants talking about why they support Project Safe. Sometimes, those reasons get personal, and the event can morph into something more profound than entertaining. [Rashaun Ellis] SATURDAY, APRIL 21

Boybutante Ball 40 WATT CLUB · 9 P.M. · $25

It’s been four years since I last wrote about Boybutante, and Athens still doesn’t have a gay bar, y’all. That might sound like a petty concern, but community is important, and perhaps it’s even informed the theme for this year’s Boybutante Ball. It’s called the “The Roaring ’20s: A Bootlegger’s Ball,” which also happens to be the only job my grandfather could keep after “the war.” There was a clandestine, secretive, backwoods aesthetic that existed around how my granddad made his money during a time when the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and others) of America also had to do their thing in secret. Or maybe the queens just wanna dress like steampunks—who knows?

Boybutante isn’t all fun and games, even though it started out as a literal house party with friends getting dragged up and performing for the fun of it. At the end of the night—or rather, the beginning of the morning—they realized they had amassed a nice little chunk of change, and since these performers clearly have hearts of gold, they decided to donate the bucket to charity. This snowballed into the Boybutante AIDS Foundation, a nonprofit that will host the event for the 29th year in a row.

Boybutante is an organization more so than a party, so events happen year-round to raise money and educate the public, but Boyball Week is what we’ve all been waiting for.

It started on Apr. 16 with an amateur drag competition, followed by Drag Bingo at The Foundry and a VIP happy hour for the most generous of donors, with the 29th Annual Boybutante Ball being the icing on the cake. Always at the 40 Watt, this year’s ball touts a $25 general admission price with doors opening at 9 p.m. on Saturday. Attendees dress according to the theme with a skill that can rival that of the performers—it’s definitely a “see and be seen” event among a certain sect of the Athens LGBTQIA+ community.

If the balls, which are almost mythical in their size and salaciousness, are the icing on the cake, then the cherry on top is the annual Survivor’s Brunch on Sunday, more often referred to locally as Drag Brunch, catered by Mama’s Boy at the Athens Cotton Press at 149 Oneta St. this year.

Of course, all of this fun is for a good cause— Boybutante is the largest donor to Live Forward (formerly AIDS Athens), which provides nearly every type of support and outreach to people living with HIV and AIDS in Athens and surrounding areas. [RE] SUNDAY, APRIL 22

Masters at the Museum INSTALLATIONS, PAINTINGS AND MORE AT THE MFA EXIT SHOW

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com A decades-long tradition of the Georgia Museum of Art and Lamar Dodd School of Art, the annual “Master of Fine Arts Degree Candidates Exhibition” showcases the creations of exiting students as they embark on professional careers. This year’s candidates are Katelyn Chapman, Whitney Cleveland, Annemarie DiCamillo and Kelsey Scharf (painting and drawing); Ally Christmas and Deepanjan Mukhopadhyay (photography and video); Yeonsoo Kim and Karine Lepage (ceramics); Erin Geagon and Johanna Norry (fabric design); Katherine Miller, Kaleena Stasiak and Ali Norman (printmaking and book arts); Elizabeth Rogers (Art X); Katlin Shae (sculpture); and Alexis Spina (jewelry and metals).

Recognized as a terminal degree, the MFA represents the highest level of academic training obtainable by aspiring artists, and several of the candidates demonstrate a strong vision in their field. Norman’s beautiful black-and-white intaglio prints of flora and fauna are simultaneously earthy and mystical through their intricate detail and symbolism. Kim modernizes the centuries-old craft of ceramics by challenging himself to create a new hand-built vessel or mask each day, resulting in a diary-like collection of unusual porcelain pieces decorated with narrative illustrations.

Multiple students choose to utilize materials beyond their academic focus. Sculptor student Shae creates handwoven textiles that incorporate fun materials such as metallic threads, pompoms, VHS tape, beads and zip-ties. Photographer Mukhopadhyay’s body of work spans video, installation, sculpture and new media to convey ideas pertaining to identity, politics, labor and the transition from post-colonialism to neocolonialism.

Impressively, a few artists present multimedia installations resembling dioramas, offering Ali Norman three-dimensional environments for the viewer to become absorbed in. Norry built the claustrophobic bedroom scene “He Called Me Crazy” based off of and a founder of the Peabody Awards, and his girlfriend a tragic incident that occurred within her own family. In Miriam Thurmond. Norry’s personal curiosity led to finding 1949, her great-aunt Kathleen shot her then-ex-husband hundreds of newspaper articles detailing the events, as well John Drewry, dean of the UGA Grady College of Journalism as an archive at the UGA Special Collections Library full of

letters John wrote in the early ’30s that frequently express concern over marital issues and Kathleen’s mental health.

Imagining this dark past eventually grew into the materialization of an unsettling installation that embodies elements of mental illness and patriarchal oppression. The floors are covered in newspaper clippings with a foundation of revealing headlines, while a rotary telephone provides an opportunity to invasively listen in on a recording of one of John’s private letters to Kathleen. Busily patterned wallpaper is accented with haunting silhouettes of Miriam and Kathleen’s former lover, Margaret H. Blair, while other men in Kathleen’s life—her son, her attorney, her psychiatrist—hang on the wall as embroidered witnesses to her unraveling. The most bizarre detail of the scene is an old armchair with long threads embroidered on the worn patches to resemble Kathleen’s nerves spilling onto the floor.

Beyond an investigation into family history, the installation demonstrates how the intersection of art and archive can influence collective memory.

Hanging on adjacent walls, the paintings of Chapman and Scharf reflect comparable influences of the rural South and working-class life. A series of three oil paintings by Chapman memorialize piles of crushed Busch, Budweiser and Bud Light cans, while “Dirt Rich,” appearing like a scene from a backwoods gas station, depicts a decapitated buck’s head and various cuts of raw meat chilling in a Pepsi cooler. While Chapman focuses on the rituals of everyday life made familiar by her hometown, Scharf contemplates the disappearing histories of abandoned spaces. What began as a search in Athens for connections to her background as a factory worker in northwest Ohio led to the ruins of the Puritan Cordage Mill. Holding an unusual sheen, her oil paintings on copper speak to the use of industrial materials and document the natural decay and adaptive reuse of the space.

The Georgia Museum will host MFA Speaks on Thursday, Apr. 19 at 6:30 p.m. Each candidate will give a three-minute presentation offering insight into the concepts and processes behind their artwork, and will then be available in the gallery to answer questions from visitors. MFA Speaks will be immediately followed by Museum Mix from 8–11 p.m. In addition to refreshments and snacks, the free late-night art party features a dance party led by DJ Mahogany, who plans to spin a mix of soul, disco, funk, hip hop, rap and pop. After-hours gallery access also includes the exhibitions “Opera in Print: Fin-de-siècle Posters from the Blum Collection,” “Crafting History: Textiles, Metals and Ceramics at the University of Georgia” and “Images of Awakening: Buddhist Sculpture from Afghanistan and Pakistan.” f

ever one to stick to a strict definition of Americana, Ohio-born singer, songwriter and guitarist Lydia Loveless proudly borrows from modern pop music at this stage of her ever-evolving career. When she first became serious about songwriting, Loveless figured her peers’ pop and rock tastes wouldn’t pave her a lyrically rich creative path. So, she began digging through discount bins for classic country releases.

“I wanted to get more into actual songwriting, so I got into more elementary stuff,” she says.

“Not to call Hank Williams a simple songwriter. I just felt that he wrote songs anyone could get into, because he was just singing about life and using pretty simple chords.

That was kind of my major inspiration as a teenager.”

After years of stressing good lyrics over genre defiance, Loveless started showing flashes of pop inspiration. By opening up her repertoire to include covers of everyone from power-pop-era Elvis Costello to the ever-polarizing Justin Bieber, she celebrates and emulates a much wider range of wordsmiths without abandoning her roots.

“My method now is to write music that I want to listen to,” she says. “When I was a kid and listening to stuff that I knew was pretty corny, I didn’t want to write stuff like that. I just wanted to listen to it. I’ve since been able to decipher the difference between what’s fun and a guilty pleasure and something that’s good, which is probably a lot from country music and listening to the stories and getting the emotion out of it.”

Who knows how many curious and confused listeners hear both Loveless and Bieber in a different way since her cover of “Sorry” dropped last year. Stripped of the original’s soulless electronic elements, she turned the one song by the Bieb you’re not too embarrassed to love into a jaw-droppingly gorgeous ballad.

“I think it’s a really honest song,” Loveless says. “I know people are like, ‘It takes 15 people to write a pop song,’ but I do think a lot of these singers come with a song and someone puts in a ‘bloop bloop’ sound and gets a writing credit.

I really do feel that that’s a Justin Bieber song that he really felt the need to sing and write. I guess that’s what I liked about it. It’s almost child-like in its honestly. I like that in any type of music, but especially pop music. It doesn’t sound like it was written by an old Swedish man in a cave somewhere.”

Currently, Loveless lives on a farm in North Carolina, away from the hustle and bustle of a typical city-dwelling artist’s existence. Relative isolation from bandmates and a willingness to embrace change allow her to explore DIY songwriting in ways fans of her earlier material might not expect.

“The songwriters I’ve always admired have always been very diverse and interesting and always experimenting,” she says. “That’s kind of what I’ve been doing. Lately, I’ve been writing with a keyboard and a drum machine. The record probably isn’t going to sound like that, but those are

the tools I’ve been using.”

Loveless is still the same songwriter whom some laud as a country savior and others celebrate as a true-blue rocker, so don’t expect her to go full Taylor Swift. Instead, it sounds more like she’s taking the Kacey Musgraves path, incorporating more and more pop elements into her rootsy, heartfelt story-songs.

“I’ve been saying for so many years how much I like pop music and how much it inspires me,” she says. “At this point in my life, I’m trying to utilize that instead of talking about it and then playing shitty power chords on guitar, or whatever [laughs]. I’m just trying to stretch myself a bit.”

With this openness to embrace various influences without fear of watering down a growing reputation as a roots-minded songwriter, Loveless knows she’s on pace to confuse yet fascinate more than her fellow Beliebers.

“There’s also people who are like, ‘You give me hope for country music,’ and I’m, like, sitting in my bedroom reading Twitter as my drum machine goes, and I have a synthesizer in my hand,” she says. f

We polled several employees to ask which of this year’s Record Store Day exclusives are most worthy of your hardearned bucks.

Jay-Z, Drake and Kendrick Lamar, as well as R&B divas like Mary J. Blige, Destiny’s Child and Erykah Badu. Plenty of expertly flipped samples and boom-bap drums contained on this mellow, head-nodding mix.

The Legendary Marvin Pontiac: Greatest Hits There’s nothing like an elaborate, intriguing “outsider” backstory to lure in jaded hipster scum (err, excuse me, “connoisseurs”), even if said story is constructed out of 100 percent phony baloney.

The real story (spoiler alert!) is this RSD item is the first-ever vinyl pressing of the 1999 vocal debut of Lounge Lizard John Lurie, giving us smooth, smoky, laid-back grooves garnished with a speak/sing baritone timbre à la Morphine’s Mark Sandman, F. Zappa or L. Cohen. I’ve loved this mostly overlooked album for a long time, and am excited that interest is finally renewed, bunk backstory or no.

Wipers: Live at the Met Also excited to see this live album release by Greg Sage and company, recorded in their hometown of Portland, OR on New Year’s Eve 1982 circa the Youth of America tour, but also peppered with prime-era material from 1980’s Is This Real? and the upcoming Over the Edge. Nirvana was the band that brought me to Wipers, and the line segment that connects Cobain’s songcraft to Sage’s might be even slightly shorter than the one that leads to the Pixies. One of the Pacific Northwest’s finest, these songs continue to endure.

King Black Acid: Sunlit Speaking of Portland, here comes the two-LP vinyl debut of this slept-on, sprawling and sleepy “dreamcore” gem, originally appearing as a small-run CD back in 1996. Following a similarly languid pace set by seminal shoegazers like Slowdive, these songs are a wee bit closer in psychedelic spirit to Mercury Rev or Brian Jonestown Massacre, but with some notable dark, dirge-y riffage enfolded in the mix for good measure.

They’ve pulled this crazy gem out of their hat for RSD 2018. Jerry Mathers played the Beav on the hit TV show “Leave It to Beaver.” In 1966, he also recorded these garage-rock jams with his band the Trappers, and it’s awesome! This one will only be available in super-limited quantities, so hopefully we’ll get a few.

Linda Perhacs: I’m a Harmony Psych-folk chanteuse Perhacs returned to recording after the resurgence of interest in her 1970 album Parallelograms gained her a new following and cult status. She released I’m a Harmony in 2017, but only on CD. This will be a very limited edition run on vinyl.

Random Athens Memories REMEMBER WHEN XTC AND R.E.M. SHARED A BILL?

L

ocal fans of both XTC and R.E.M. wish they could take a time machine back to Apr. 24, 1981 for their show at the B&L Warehouse in Athens. R.E.M. was a young band with a growing following. XTC was playing at the top of its game. Its sound lay somewhere near the intersection of punk and pop. Recently, I spoke with a few who were there. I also caught up with former XTC members Colin Moulding and Terry Chambers, who have just self-released an EP, Great Aspirations, with their new project, TC&I. Here in Athens, the cavernous, dark room that was once the B&L Warehouse is long gone. Now a part of UGA’s Hodgson Oil Building on Oak Street, it has settled into a more pedestrian persona as an office complex. Brad Cahoon remembers walking to the XTC/R.E.M. show with some friends from his dorm across the railroad tracks.

“The venue felt big compared to Tyrone’s O.C., which is what we were used to, but the same crowd seemed to be there.” Like

so many Athenians in the early 1980s, he listened to WUOG, which had put XTC tunes “Life Begins at the Hop” and “Making Plans for Nigel” in heavy rotation. Cahoon thought it “was cool that our local heroes were opening for a big-time band.”

R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills says the show “was one of the most fun nights I’ve ever had… XTC were as hot as any band I ever saw. The crowd simply would not let them stop playing, and I think they were as surprised at the multiple encores as they were happy to play them. The musicianship of Colin and Andy [Partridge], and the power of the band, gave us something to shoot for.”

Bryan Cook of Is/Ought Gap and Time Toy says this was the first time he saw R.E.M. with colored lights on the stage.

“R.E.M. looked like a real, pro band,” he says. “It was the show of the year for us,” Cahoon adds. “It helped us realize that what was going on in Athens really was part of something bigger.”

UGA alumnus Jeff Hollis says, “There was great energy in the room that night.

The audience was enthusiastic, and I think the bands picked up on that. I just recall having fun from start to finish.”

remembrance of this show, as it was one of many dates on a long American tour for the Black Sea album. “I know the reception we got in general across America was nearly always good,” he says. “It was a great time to be young and into music.”

When XTC came to an end in 2007, Moulding remembers, “I went down like a wounded horse. It had been such a big part of my life that I couldn’t face starting anything new… I think I just watched TV for two years and made myself a nuisance at the local tennis club.”

But Moulding soon found music again, collaborating with prog-rocker Billy Sherwood on several recordings. And last year, Moulding and Chambers debuted their new group. “Terry left the band in

1982 and moved to Australia to be with his wife at that time,” says Moulding. “He had made previous visits to the UK… When he came over in 2016, he expressed a wish that he would like to come back to England on a permanent basis. I asked him there and then whether he fancied playing on some new songs of mine. One thing led to another, and then we formed TC&I. A very enjoyable few months we had, too, recording and having fun.”

The four songs on Great Aspirations include adult themes like conservation and facing mortality. One can only hope that Moulding and Chambers continue to record and share their talents with the world. f Check out a video from TC&I at flagpole.com.

Although on its surface it seems to be pretty compositionally upfront and slightly singer-songwriter-ish, the most edifying and enjoyable aspect is its unabashed dub influence. This is most obviously present on opening track “Seed My Soul”—which is also in the

running for best song in the whole collection—but also features heavily on “Enamel” and others. Monroe reverts back to his Art Contest styling with the jaunty “Background Music.” Honestly, the only thing I didn’t care for was the instrumental “Beulah,” which isn’t particularly distinctive.

Album closer “Two Eyes,” though, is a nice way to wash out to sea after the particularly tender-souled acoustic number “Portrait of a Heart.” Check it out at okey.bandcamp.com.

YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY: Athens songwriter Dan Clifford has a new three-song EP out named Future, which he says is titled in tribute to both the rapper (?) and the concept, which makes sense in the context of being the wrapper that surrounds these songs. Each track is a guitar-based exploration of self-reflection and, I suppose, healing. To this end, Clifford has composed pretty gentle songs, but the lyrics are written so that he’s necessarily singing only to himself, and as such, this may work just fine as a deeply personal project, but as entertainment it falls far short. sour mixes,” he says, and bartenders are going back to pre-Prohibition recipe books to rediscover the classic cocktails from the golden era.

Matt McFerron was inspired to open The Old Pal in Normaltown in 2013 after living in New York City and New Orleans. “I saw that a neighborhood bar was part of the identity of a lot of neighborhoods in those cities, and in particular, I not only saw the craft beer scene take off, but craft cocktails as well,” he says.

At Seabear Oyster Bar, a glittering mosaic of liquor and liqueur bottles line four long shelves stretching across the back wall. But the pièce de résistance is the small machine churning a bright orange slush. The sign reads, “Frozen Negroni.”

“There are people who ask, ‘What’s a Negroni? Can I have one of those [frozen] Negronis?’” says Hunt Revell, who runs the bar program at Seabear. “These days, I’m like, ‘Let me let you taste it first,’ because it’s not a sweet, syrupy frozen drink.”

A Negroni—equal parts gin, red vermouth and Campari—is a classic cocktail, he’ll explain. It’s bitter and herbal, and it’s an acquired taste. Yet for every person Revell is introducing to the cocktail, that many more are coming in to request a Negroni or another craft cocktail.

“We have a full rotating menu of cocktails, and people are ordering them all.

We’ve got 20 or 30 options they can get, and specialty drinks, and they’re ordering them,” says Revell, who admits to not knowing anything about a decent cocktail when he came to Athens for school in 2002.

So, how did a cheapbeer and sour-mix-lov- Frozen Negroni ing college town come to embrace and support a craft cocktail scene? “The cocktail moment’s been bubbling up for about 15 years now,” says Jerry Slater, a veteran of the restaurant industry who wrote the recently published Southern Foodways Alliance Guide to Cocktails. In Athens, the renaissance took root in restaurants like Five & Ten and The National, he says. As customers gained a taste for locally inspired menus made with care, the demand for high-quality beverages began to follow.

Revell got his start 10 years ago bussing tables at Five & Ten. “There were cocktails on the menu then. There were bartenders there making unique drinks or researching old drinks,” he says. “I remember learning about a daiquiri, like, this is good drink?

That’s just a silly, frou-frou thing, right?

No, these were classic drinks meant to be enjoyed slowly, with good ingredients.”

Cocktails had a golden age from 1880 to around 1910, says Slater. “Bartenders were considered craftsmen. On the same block, you would have your cobbler, your tailor and your bartender, who knew exactly what you wanted to drink. It was a respected trade,” he says.

Then America “shot itself in the foot” with Prohibition, which launched America into what Slater calls the dark ages, when engineered pre-mixes became the norm.

That’s encouraging, he says, because he knows that cocktails can be intimidating, and many of his customers are still getting to know their way around them. “If you look at all these bottles on the back bar, if you’ve never tried them before, I can see how it could be daunting,” he says. The Old Pal offers a less expensive, starter cocktail menu featuring ingredients customers are more likely to be familiar with in the hopes of helping them branch out.

“We try not to force anything on people that they’re not comfortable with or don’t want,” McFerron says. Revell and Slater agree. The most important thing is to meet people where they are, they say.

Once a customer trusts you, says Slater, then you can start suggesting options outside their comfort zone. Like the transition from drinking flavored lattes to black coffee, there are “stages of connoisseurship” for cocktails, too, he says. “Those cocktails can be very flavorful, and sometimes people aren’t used to that. You have to evolve.”

McFerron is optimistic that more Athenians will come around to craft cocktails in time. Already, he’s seeing more cocktail events pop up around town, and he’s not too surprised. “For a small Southern college town, it is open-minded, and people here are willing to try new things.” f

The space is much larger than you’d expect from the outside, with an array of seating options and tables that include the name of the Wi-Fi network and its password on signs taped to their edges. Said tables also bear the phrase “first class” repeatedly, which is nice, except for when the text runs off the edge and they only say “ass.” Oh well.

It’s a place geared to students, who may appreciate that levity.

It seems like too much, but it kind of works, and it’s not too sweet.

SCOOPS: Since moving to Thomas Street from its Prince Avenue location, Lindsey’s Culinary Market (520 N. Thomas St., under 1000 Faces, 706-353-0558) has been able to expand into a regular lunch thing. You could get sandwiches before and ready-to-go casseroles to pass off as your own or feed new parents, and you could order catering, but there wasn’t space for a sit-down component, and now there is. The space is unrecognizable from its previous

use as a band-practice facility. It was dark and cramped and a little creepy. Now it’s not. Hooray!

The experience isn’t super fancy—you order at the counter; food comes on small metal trays—but it’s nice. You can just get a snack (fancy chocolate bars, gummy things, baggies of housemade trail mix, cookies), or you can put together a whole meal.

Sandwiches consist of shrimp salad, chicken salad, grilled chicken and pimento-less cheese and cost $10 or $11 each but do include a scoop of a fresh-made side from the refrigerated case. The same things are available as a scoop on top of any salad.

The sides change daily, but could include a savory tart with seasonal vegetables, a quiche with same, a barbecue pork quesadilla, an orzo salad with a bunch more veggies, a rutabaga casserole, spring-roll-type thingies made with collard greens for the wrap and a peanut sauce for dipping. Some are good—fresh and beautiful, with an emphasis on high-quality ingredients— while others need a pinch of salt to bring out their good side.

Weekends bring breakfast sandwiches—made with things that are more like rolls than biscuits, vaguely bagel-ish but less bready, and filled with eggs, cheese and bacon—as well as grits. They’re a highlight, as are the cookies, which are big, thin and crisp, not fat and mushy like at most places. If you want to try a bunch of things, your tab will grow faster than you realize, as most things in the case run about $4 a serving.

Lindsey’s is open weekdays from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. It serves no booze and has a private room for large parties and to rent.

Very Ape PAIR TORRES-TORRES’ LATEST REVISION WITH A ROMERO CLASSIC

By Jon Hogan music@flagpole.com After condensing the entirety of the Phantasm series in Phantasm Revision last year, Athens native Jorge Torres-Torres is at it again. On Wednesday, Apr. 18, he returns to Flicker Theatre & Bar to screen his own double feature. Revision of the Planet of the Apes and Evil Dead Revision collapse their respective franchises into efficient, coherent and downright fun CliffsNotes versions. (See The Calendar for details of Wednesday’s screening.)

Torres-Torres’ Apes edit achieves the considerable challenge of culling 486 minutes to a sleek 80-minute run time. For another tale of murderous monkeys rising up against their human oppressors, chase the revision with George A. Romero’s 1988 thriller Monkey Shines.

Go Out and Watch REVISION OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2018) In his Planet of the Apes edit, Torres-Torres wisely eschews the wooden Tim Burton remake and the recent trilogy, whose slick CGI character work sets it apart from the series’ typical milieu of men in monkey costumes. He focuses on the classic series of five films, which are ripe for the type of omnibus that TorresTorres has turned into an art form. The original run comprises a multigenerational saga of the moral and evolutionary failure of humans giving rise to an ape-run society, and the filmmaker’s meticulously crafted edit concisely surfaces and highlights the themes that run throughout this epic.

While the original films follow a twisted timeline that starts millennia in the future, jumps back to the 1970s and progresses from there, Torres-Torres avoids the temptation to straighten it into a linear chronology à la the TV miniseries “The Godfather Saga.” Instead, he finds new ways to twist the events of the series into a unique package. We start with the events of the third film, which sees chimpanzee scientists Cornelius (Roddy McDowall) and Zira (Kim Hunter) travel to the present day to flee nuclear destruction. Contemporary audiences watching Revision are introduced to the idea of a world full of talking apes and human slaves at the same time as the contemporary human characters that suspiciously greet Cornelius and Zira upon their arrival. Coupled with an ending that rearranges the events of the series in a way that suggests calamity, Torres-Torres amplifies the original films’ pessimism regarding the human race’s inability to keep itself alive.

Any tension or discomfort this device may yield is neutralized by the edit’s clever humor. The patchwork nature of TorresTorres’ revisions allows his Apes edit to become a triumph of intertextuality, summoning visuals and audio from pop culture ephemera surrounding the films. The 1975

animated series “Return to the Planet of the Apes” makes several appearances, perhaps inspiring the cartoon sound effects overlaid over characters’ pratfalls. Musical cues like George Michael’s “Monkey” add an energy and joy to the series’ fairly rote fight scenes.

I will not spoil the edit’s greatest musical appropriation, drawn from the most wellknown television reference to Planet of the Apes and deployed at a time when it’s least expected. These comical touches temper what could have become a graceless exposition dump in the hands of a lesser editor.

Stay Home and Watch MONKEY SHINES (1988) Zombie maestro Romero’s first studio film marries his horror sensibilities with a uniquely weird plot.

The generically handsome Allan (Jason Beghe) is paralyzed after being struck by a truck. To boost the spirits of his depressed best friend, scientist Geoffrey (John Pankow of “Mad About You”) gives Allan a helper monkey named Ella. However, Geoffrey fails to mention that Ella has been the subject of a scientific experiment that

sought to enhance her intelligence with injections of human brain matter. Through the wonders of pseudoscience, Allan and Ella develop a bond that turns the adorable capuchin into a relentless killer hell-bent on punishing her master’s enemies.

Monkey Shines makes for such a satisfying double feature with Revision because both boast masterful editing. The cutting in Monkey Shines needs to be particularly smart in order to showcase a lead performance from an animal actor. Stretches of the plot are driven by Ella’s actions, which are often too complex for a monkey to reliably execute in a single take. Romero solves this problem by isolating several distinct actions in individual shots that are then strung together into a sequence displaying a complicated agenda on the monkey’s part.

For example, bonding between master and pet earlier in the film involves Ella performing several tasks for her owner before sitting in his lap and smiling. Romero presents each task in a single shot, which means that the monkey only needs to execute one action at a time, instead of a complex chain of actions. With the help of editor Pasquale Buba, the director crafts an antagonist convincingly capable of executing evil schemes, making Monkey Shines succeed as a horror film despite a ludicrous premise. f

ISLE OF DOGS (PG-13) Wes Anderson’s newest film, an animated ode to man’s best friend, is delightful. An all-star voice cast including, but not limited to, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel and even Yoko Ono tells the fairy tale of a future Japan where all dogs have gone to Trash Island thanks to Mayor Kobayashi, who hails from a centuries-old cat-loving dynasty. Maybe it’s the animal proxies that make Anderson’s sometimes-twee tendencies come across with more sincerity as a young boy searches for his lost dog, Spots (v. Liev Schreiber).

While the PG-13 rating feels a bit undeserved, Isle of Dogs is less little-kid-friendly than Anderson’s previous stop-motion gem, Fantastic Mr. Fox. One need not be an animal lover to find Isle of Dogs a charmer. Will its sweet disposition change the minds of Anderson’s detractors? Not in the slightest, but this consistency of aesthetic is exactly what his many admirers, both critical and cult, expect. f

About the Mayor and Commission WHERE WILL THE SURGE OF PROGRESSIVE ENERGY TAKE ATHENS?

By Pete McCommons editor@flagpole.com Atlanta activist Rev. Hosea Williams used to call up Georgia Senator Wyche Fowler during elections and tell him, “Wyche, I can come out for you or against you—whichever will help you the most.”

I thought about Hosea and Wyche when I heard that Nancy Denson has endorsed Harry Sims for mayor. I wondered if it even fleetingly went through Harry’s mind to ask Nancy if she would mind not endorsing him. This whole election is about the pent-up political energy breaking out among those who have chafed for almost eight years under Denson’s smiling, business-as-usual leadership. Harry has been the centerpiece of support for Do-Nothing Denson, and this might be a good time to try to distance himself from her.

The other races are more straightforward, even though hard to predict or even to choose.
