“I think we need to go more toward incentivizing [developers] rather than penalizing, and stripping ordinances that don’t promote smart growth,” Knight said.

Girtz said he’d like to set aside $15 million over five years in the next SPLOST to pay for amenities like landscaping and stormwater mitigation to make housing more affordable. Other tools could include density bonuses (allowing developers to build more units than allowed if those units are affordable) and inclusionary zoning (requiring a certain number of units to be rented or sold at below-market rates).

All three candidates also said they favor freezing property taxes for seniors under a certain, unspecified income level—a policy Mayor Nancy Denson proposed in 2011, although without an income cap, that the commission unanimously rejected—as a way to help seniors on fixed incomes in gentrifying neighborhoods stay in their homes.

Ultimately, the answer to the affordable housing problem is jobs, Sims said. “[A lack of] jobs is the biggest problem we have,” he said. Tech jobs are nice, but ACC is overlooking jobs for ordinary citizens, he said.

As far as wages, “unfortunately, in local government, our hands are a little tied,” Knight said. (State law prohibits local governments from raising the minimum wage.)

But ACC should be developing a more skilled workforce, he said.

Networking—connecting underprivileged youth to mentors in the business world—is important, Girtz said. He also proposed using tax allocation districts, where tax revenue from development is poured back into infrastructure, and community improvement districts, where landowners vote to tax themselves, as tools to draw development. And the employers who benefit from those tools should be required to pay a living wage, he said. As mayor, he said he wouldn’t go after $9–$12 an hour jobs, but rather $50,000–$80,000 a year jobs.

Municipal Broadband for Athens?

With broadband internet service spotty or unavailable in many parts of Athens—especially the rural areas, but some lower-income neighborhoods in town, too—Athens-Clarke commissioners are considering starting a government-run utility to offer broadband throughout the county.

The commission hired the Corus Group—which has worked on broadband systems for Thomasville, Valdosta, Kennesaw and other cities—last year to do a study of municipal broadband. That study, presented to commissioners at a work session last week, recommended laying a loop of fiber around the county, with government buildings serving as hubs to distribute internet access throughout neighborhoods, whether by wire or wireless technology. The system could operate at speeds of up to 10 gigabytes per second—many times faster than what Charter and other local internet service providers currently offer.

The basic infrastructure would cost about $2.1 million–$3.2 million, but there are several ways ACC could recoup the costs: Government offices and schools would no longer have to pay for internet access, for example, and ACC could use wi-fi to sell custom ads on buses (such as a video for a business that played when the bus passed that business). ACC could lease the infrastructure to private companies (thus mitigating consumer price increases when ISPs move to better technology) or become an ISP itself.

In addition, high-speed broadband and widely available wi-fi would be a selling point to bring businesses into the community, consultants said.

Employees would be able to start a project at home and continue working on the bus on the way to the office without ever losing their connection.

Discussions are still in the very early stages, and municipal broadband seems a long way off. Commissioners said they want to find partners to help share the cost (possibly UGA and the school district).

Commissioner Jared Bailey questioned the height of the cell towers required (150–200 feet). And Sharyn Dickerson, Andy Herod and Jerry NeSmith—commissioners who represent areas on the outskirts of the county—said they would prefer to work outside-in rather than inside-out, to bring service first to people who don’t have it.

“There are constant individual and class-action lawsuits in Arizona around charter schools that discriminate against students on the basis of income, disability, academic ability, religion and more,” Penich-Thacker says. “None of this is new or sudden—it’s all been at least a decade in the making, all while millions and millions of tax dollars have been funneled out of the general fund for public education and into private school tuition organizations and voucher programs.”

West Virginia’s monumental wildcat strike has given a big signal boost to Save Our Schools Arizona, the next high-profile organizing effort against the destruction of public schools.

As with all good organizing efforts, the team behind SOS Arizona seems a little ragtag. There’s an English professor, a fifth grade teacher, a retired Petsmart CEO, another retiree from Microsoft and a consultant for youth summer camps. And then there’s Dawn Penich-Thacker, another English professor who, before she taught, was an Army officer and serves as the group’s spokesperson.

“Four of us have kids at home ranging from 5 years old to 17 years old, and the two retired folks have adult children long gone from the house,” Penich-Thacker says.

“Some of our children attend public schools, and some attend charter schools.”

The people who make up SOS Arizona are multitudinous, regular, mired in public education and management. They’re different than the deregulation-friendly ghouls running Arizona and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, who has accelerated the death of public education so that a few have more “school choice.”

“We see chronic neglect or in some cases outright assault on public education in the state,” Penich-Thacker says. “Neglect in that over $1 billion that was cut from public education a decade ago during the recession has never been restored, and indeed our governor and legislature have expanded the number of tax cuts that make restoring the education budget all but impossible without robbing Peter to pay Paul.” [Editor’s note: Georgia is in a similar boat.]

That SOS Arizona counters “choice” rhetoric and voucher schemes via a fairly slick website, an organized “team” and on-point, unforgiving talking points is as

Union activist Lois Weiner observes that public educator mobilization also counters simplistic “red state” narratives maintained by places such as The New York Times who, post-Trump, have bent over backward to talk to anybody whose politics are fascist-adjacent or just plain suck (see: the Ohio dork who has shut off the news because he doesn’t like Trump), while mostly ignoring the biggest labor story in years happening in those states they admit they woefully under-covered.

“The Times just carried an article that portrayed [West Virginia] as a deep red state. And I think that that is a really dangerous, misleading oversimplification about the politics,” Weiner said last month. “And the walkout shows that— the walkout and the fact that West Virginia voted for Sanders in the primaries.”

Oklahoma is also a state Trump won that went for Sanders in the Democratic primary. In Arizona that’s not true— Trump won, Clinton took the Democratic primary—but that shows how organizing and labor concerns related to education are potentially a uniting force for fed-up leftists and cautious liberals alike. Two more “right to work” states floating strikes should be a far more heartening victory than right-of-center Democratic clod Conor Lamb’s special election win in Pennsylvania.

Money Talks SEVERAL CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR ARE MILLIONAIRES

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com Do you have to be wealthy to run for governor? You might think so after paging through the financial disclosure statements candidates were required to file with the state ethics commission last week.

On the Republican side, three of the five major candidates profess to be millionaires: Their total financial assets exceed their total liabilities by at least $1 million.

State Sen. Michael Williams (R-Cumming) has been doing poorly in the polls but quite well on the balance sheet.

Williams sold a chain of barber shops in 2013 and walked away with a lot of money.

He now has a net worth of $9.1 million, the highest of any of the Republicans running.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp isn’t far behind with a net worth of $5.2 million.

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle is the leading money-raiser among Republican candidates, but he’s only in the middle of the pack when it comes to personal wealth. Cagle’s reported net worth is $1.58 million. Clay Tippins, a former Navy SEAL who’s now a business consultant, disclosed a net worth of $745,000, while former Army officer Hunter Hill is at $448,000.

There are two fringe Republican candidates for governor who most likely will finish with only a handful of votes on election day. But both of them appear to be in decent financial shape on the personal level.

Eddie Hayes, an Athens restaurant owner, reported a net worth of $1.26 million. Marc Alan Urbach, a former teacher who lists his current occupation as “author,” claims to have a net worth of $953,000.

Over on the Democratic side, Stacey Evans of Smyrna is a trial attorney who was awarded a sizeable legal fee when she successfully represented a client in a whistleblower lawsuit. She has put $1.2 million of her own money into her campaign, but

still reported a net worth of $5.2 million.

Evans still owes $45,449 on student loans she took out while attending the University of Georgia and has an outstanding bank loan of $24,800, but it looks like she will have the fiscal resources to pay them off.

The one exception to all of these solvent candidates for governor is Stacey Abrams, who was the House minority leader before stepping down last year to run for governor.

Abrams’ personal finances, to put it politely, are a mess. She reported a net worth of only $108,885. She owes the IRS $54,052 in back taxes, although she said there is a plan in place to pay them back. Abrams still owes $96,512 on student loans she took out to pay the costs of attending Spelman College, the University of Texas and Yale Law School. She has had some problems with credit card debt, as well, and still owes about $75,000 in that category.

None of this criminal or unethical, of course. Abrams’ opponent in the Democratic primary, as we have already noted, also has some hefty student loan balances to pay off. Abrams has talked often about the financial sacrifices she has made to care for her parents. She also is not the first person ever to fall behind on their credit card payments. Just ask millions of cash-strapped Americans.

There has been no indication that Evans will make an issue of personal finances in the Democratic primary race, but if Abrams should get the nomination, then all bets are off. In that instance, you can look for the Republican nominee to run TV commercials claiming that Abrams’ financial difficulties are proof she’s a “free-spending liberal” who wants to squander the taxes paid by “hard-working Georgians.” When you’re a non-millionaire running for statewide office, that’s going to happen to you. f

Stopping School Shootings What Are Athens Schools and Police Are Doing to Prevent Another Parkland?

Means said the district has also contracted with Safe Havens International, a nonprofit organization, to assess the district and do a security audit.

But the question of next steps for this subset of the local police force is still up in the air. The district’s police chief, former GBI agent and ACCPD assistant chief Fred Stephens, retired in January and has not been replaced.

Before leaving, Means said Stephens suggested expanding the school resource officer force. But Means is holding back for now, weighing other options before increasing the police presence in schools.

MAYORAL CANDIDATE KNIGHT’S BUSINESS RECORD CALLED INTO QUESTION

R

ichie Knight is running for mayor as a young, energetic entrepreneur who can bring a fresh voice and business experience to City Hall. But his track record in business may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

Knight, 28, founded HW Creative Marketing eight years ago with Nicole Batten, whom he met through the 4-H program. In recent years, he has become heavily involved in the community, serving on the boards of directors of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and the Athens Downtown Development Authority and on an Athens-Clarke County economic mobility task force, and working with charities like United Way and Extra Special People, a camp for children with Down syndrome and other disabilities.

“I’m the one sitting up here amongst my opponents that signs paychecks every month, that’s kept the lights on, and knows what it takes to grow a workforce and be successful as a community,” Knight said at a recent candidate forum. But according to former employees, if he runs the city the way he runs his business, Athens is in trouble.

“This is a guy who’s running on the idea of, ‘I’m a business owner, and I’m really successful,’” said one former HW employee. “If that’s his basis for running, people need to know he’s irresponsible and mismanaging his business.”

At least five former HW employees— including Loran Posey, who also served as Knight’s campaign manager—have filed claims in Clarke County Magistrate Court in recent months alleging that the company either wrote them bad checks or did not pay them for their work. The nonprofit tech incubator Four Athens also filed a claim against HW for back rent last year, although Executive Director Jordan Burke said that situation has since been resolved.

In a Facebook post shortly after the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement’s candidate forum Mar. 12, Posey wrote that Knight had failed to pay employees, bounced checks and paid some “substantially less than what they were owed.” In addition, several other former HW employees have told Flagpole that there has been a mass exodus from the company, primarily due to payroll problems. They say checks sometimes came late, if at all, or bounced; they were promised raises that never materialized; and taxes were often withheld incorrectly. Sources also said they have not received their last paychecks after quitting months ago, or were only partially paid months after leaving. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division is investigating HW, DOL spokesman Michael D’Aquino confirmed, but he said he could not release any further information.

“The business is writing these checks knowing there’s no money in the account,” another former employee said. “It’s the facade of a well-run business, and I don’t want to be a part of that, because it’s not.”

Knight said the claims have all been resolved or are in the process of being resolved. “Anything that hasn’t been resolved is being handled by an attorney,” he said, so he could not comment further.

The company’s office in the old Wild Wing space upstairs from the Blind Pig was nearly empty during a recent late-morning interview. HW is shifting away from fulltime employees to part-time employees and contractors who work from home, Knight said. “It’s the pains of running a small business in this town,” he said. “Getting the right talent has been our biggest struggle.”

because she’s “not even African American.”

(Johnson, who is originally from Jamaica, declined to comment, and Knight denied making that remark.)

In addition, several ex-employees told Flagpole that Knight is more conservative than he is making himself out to be, and that said he voted for Donald Trump for president, which Knight also denied. He has consistently declined to reveal his national political leanings, though.

“I’m a gay, Hispanic business owner,” he said in a December interview. “I’ve never wanted to be put in a box my whole life.

Why would I start now?”

He has staked out liberal positions on a variety of issues—favoring decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana and the creation of a civil rights committee to investigate discrimination complaints, and opposing Sheriff Ira Edwards’ policy of cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain and deport undocumented immigrants being held at the county jail. He also wants to press the University of Georgia to contribute to an affordable housing trust fund as a way to make up for its tax-exempt status and low pay for many staff members.

On economic development, though, he sounds more conservative, saying that ACC is unfriendly to business, and that business owners have to jump through too many hoops and are restricted by too many regulations.

Raised in Newton County by a Cuban immigrant mother and a father who owns a property-appraisal business, Knight said he learned about hard work at an early age. He said Athens is facing “a workforce development crisis.” He has heard from employers like Carrier, a refrigeration and air-conditioning company with a plant in Athens, that they can’t find reliable people to fill jobs, and so Athens needs programs that teach soft skills. At the same time, the local government doesn’t do enough to build up young professionals, either. He has proposed transferring economic development from ACC to the chamber of commerce, as many cities do. “We have no economic development strategy at all,” he said.

Above all, Knight said he would be a mayor with no allegiances, who can break through stalemates and get things done.

“We continue to claim to be this progressive city, but what are we doing to be progressive?” f

Reality Check Kevin Barnes on What Shaped of Montreal’s Searing New Album

his month, shapeshifting Athens pop act of Montreal celebrates the release of its latest album, White Is Relic/ Irrealis Mood, a six-track, 42-minute affair that’s dense and demanding while also serving as the group’s most creatively satisfying set in years—lo-fi cultural anxiety writ large with Arthur Russell-at-Paisley Park vibes. Founder and frontman Kevin Barnes says the record, which blends the personal and the political until there is hardly any distinction, arose after he “reached a healthy point of self-forgiveness for my failed marriage and became deeply educated in the lies of America the great.”

Listening to White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood—primarily a Barnes solo joint—it’s clear there is a deep well of inspiration behind the album, from its bass-heavy production to its blistering lyricism. Looking ahead to of Montreal’s release show at the 40 Watt, Flagpole invited Barnes to send over some thoughts on a few of the influences that shaped the new LP, and he happily obliged.

DJ Screw “I realize that I’m way late to the party on this one,” says Barnes, who recently dove headfirst into the sprawling catalog of the late Texas DJ, known for pioneering the “chopped and screwed” method of hip-hop production. “In a way, I feel like DJ Screw is the godfather of genres like vaporwave and dubstep. His method of slowing everything down breathes new life into a track and unlocks all sorts of new frequencies and sound waves that were aurally unintelligible at the track’s original speed. I learned through listening to his work that almost everything sounds cooler when slowed way down. Even the most basic mainstream pop

song becomes deeply transportive and mysterious when time-stretched below its original BPM.” In fact, Barnes eagerly employed this trick on the new of Montreal record. “I used this approach on a bunch of songs,” he reveals. “I recorded them a lot faster than I intended them to be, and then I slowed the recordings down until they started to sound magical and exciting, and then I would overdub on top of that to complete the composition. It was a very interesting way to shake myself out of my ordinary arrangement routine, and it pushed me into new sonic territories.”

His career arc plays out almost like a zen koan, if people wrote dirty koans instead of limericks.”

Black American Authors Barnes primarily envisioned White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood as a missive against “toxic” American whiteness. “I absorbed the works of James Baldwin, Angela Davis, Elaine Brown, Ava DuVernay [and] Ta-Nehisi Coates, as well as Malcolm X’s autobiography, to gain insight into an aspect of the American experience that was unknown to me,” he says. “I was subconsciously aware that systemic racism formed a

large part of the foundation and inception of this country, but I wasn’t cognizant of just how deeply it continues to define and affect us in such destructive and deeply negative ways.”

In the process of creating the record, Barnes says he became hyper-aware of his own role in this system. “Often, when the topic of systemic racism comes up, white people get extremely uncomfortable and try to change the subject, because they don’t want to take any responsibility for their role as beneficiaries of oppression and injustice,” he says.

“I’ve come to understand that my perceptions and world view have been seen solely through the filter of [the] white, male experience. The hope is not just to celebrate heritage; it’s also about celebrating where hip hop came from and how it transformed into what it is now. According to Miller, the roots of hip hop extend beyond Harlem and Detroit to various countries in Africa.

Miller says even the four essential elements of hip hop derive from African culture—the DJ, who would be the drummer in a traditional village; graffiti writers, or the scribes; the emcee, or storyteller; and the b-boys and girls, or dancers.

the co-founders to up the ante for this year’s awards show. In light of the upcoming local election, the theme for the ceremony is “activism,” and attendees have been encouraged to wear traditional royal African garb.

“It’s important that the hip-hop community in itself is awakened to what’s going on locally,” says Mokah Johnson. “We want to make more emphasis on politics and activism and being involved to make a difference in your community.”

Every facet of this year’s show is intended to emphasize the theme. Because of her activist background, Johnson will co-host the event alongside rapper Larry Gresham Jr., aka LG, to help bring awareness to the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement and other local causes.

Additionally, all the performers have been asked to include a song with a social message, and many presenters are candidates for local office. “We’re not endorsing anyone. We want them there,” Johnson says.

The request that event-goers dress in traditional African attire was a choice made to highlight the need for everyone, but especially the youth of the community, to understand and embrace their roots.

“There’s a problem, because we’re no longer holding on to our history, and we’re no longer respecting the people that came before us,” Johnson says. “The youth don’t

As always, the awards aim to celebrate the culture surrounding the music scene.

This year will add another layer to it by encouraging activism and pushing people to understand their roots. The idea is to get people, both artists and non, motivated to understand local politics and help those running for office understand who they represent. Mostly, it’s a chance to educate, uplift and put the spotlight on those who aren’t normally celebrated.

“It’s not individuals; it’s sort of more of a movement,” Miller says. “…You might not hear it in people’s music, but [people in the hip-hop community] will still be there with their boots on the ground when it’s time for us to move towards a cause.” f

The pacing on this record is outstanding and never drags or gets tiring, even though all the songs are slow or mid-tempo. Each track has a semi-psychedelic vibe, which is fine as a directive for future releases but doesn’t do much here. Overall, there’s not enough oomph for the EP to make a point or enough branches for listeners to grab onto. I don’t really want to say it sounds tossed-off, but it kind of does. One thing to note is that this is the last release scheduled for Jack’s Johnson, as the project will undergo a name change soon. record review Seline Haze: Saga of Love EP (Independent Release) Athens emcee Seline Haze found music only recently, having formerly honed her creative chops as a poet and blogger. As such, her work has an unflinchingly honest quality, and Saga of Love—the first of a two-part series planned for 2018, with counterpart Feel set to drop this summer—balances the intensity of spoken word with the joy of artistic discovery.

One of a handful of current names seemingly popping up on every hiphop bill around town, Haze’s work ethic and lyrical dexterity are evident on the eight-track EP. Over lo-fi backpacker beats crafted by Jon B., Haze spits crafty bars about everything from identity to eternity, tackling weighty topics with otherworldly cool.

Among scene heads, Haze is considered to be one of Athens’ most exciting young upstarts, and Saga of Love oozes raw talent. The record is brief, its sequencing wanting and its production unvarnished, but it’s enough to whet any local rap fan’s appetite for more. [Gabe Vodicka]

Who’s Who at Fluke THESE LOCAL COMICS CELEBS WILL SHOW THEIR STUFF AT THIS YEAR’S FEST

It’s

easy to stereotype comic-book conventions from the outside as a venue for a bunch of nerds to nitpick superhero narratives or try out their homemade Iron Man costumes, but A: Quit nerd-shaming! And B: Fluke, our local yearly convention, has more to offer than that. Unlike most cons, it focuses on small, independent creators, many of whom man their own booths. A lot of them are local, too, so here’s a list of Athens-based indie-comics celebrities to seek out: ELEANOR DAVIS: It’s hard for people in Athens to realize what a big damn deal Davis is because she’s a modest person, but she’s been in multiple volumes of Best American Comics, won a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators and received the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award from the Eisners (kind of the comics Oscars) in 2009. She’ll have her newest book, Why Art? (Fantagraphics), available at her table, plus older work, including mini-comics and You & a Bike & a Road (my favorite comic of 2017).

JOEY WEISER: Best known for creating Mermin, a five-volume, all-ages, Eisner-nominated series about a fish-boy from an underwater kingdom that is super popular with the K-8 set, Weiser, who illustrated this week’s Flagpole cover, has also written for SpongeBob Comics (surprisingly good and entertaining, even for grown-ups) and done coloring for Jedi Academy and Lunch Lady.

You might not know his name, but your kids probably do. His stuff is tidy and interesting at the same time, a rare feat.

DREW WEING: One reason to go to Fluke, apart from getting to buy books from the people who made them (they’ll usually sign them with a quick drawing, too), is for the cool swag you can’t get anywhere else. Weing, who is married to Davis, is the author of The Creepy Case Files of Margo Maloo, a gripping all-ages yarn about a young monster mediator that is creepy, charming and gorgeously drawn. Last year, he had awesome Margo-logo enamel pins for sale. You can also pick up his Set to Sea, about where a romantic attitude will get you in life, for slightly older audiences than Margo.

PATRICK DEAN: Here’s the section of folks who either currently draw a strip for Flagpole or previously did. Dean’s

comic ran weekly for 10 years, but if you’re newer to town, you might know his work from the signs he paints for Trader Joe’s, where he gets to display his strong Jack Davis influence. Dean has been serializing his story “Eddie’s Week” online (eddiesweek.tumblr.com) since early this year, which is a real delight if you miss reading his work on a weekly basis.

MISSY KULIK: “Tofu Baby” has been running weekly in Flagpole since at least 2009, and although it has its detractors—they just can’t handle the twee—it has achieved a sort of éminence grise status through its longevity and consistency. (Who knew jokes about not being able to pronounce the letter R were such fewtile gwound?) Kulik draws a lot more besides the cute lil’ bean curd, and you can pick up buttons and other accessories at her booth.

LEE GATLIN: Gatlin’s “Gang Agley” strip has been running in Flagpole for a while, too, and it’s been interesting to watch it evolve. He’s turned from simpler, cartoonier lines to panels that are more reliant on what look like washes (ink or watercolor) and color. He’s gotten some national indie-comics attention for it, too, including from notable comics journalist Zainab Akhtar, who appreciates his mopey, goofy superheros and vampires.

DAVID MACK: For years, my go-to gift for dummies who move away from Athens (some willingly, some less so) has been one of Mack’s small compilations of his “A Round Town” Flagpole comics, which capture the feel of the town like little else. They were getting harder to find, and I cleaned Avid out of the ones they had left at one point, but now you can get a complete run (at least, up to a point) in a fat little book called Athens, GA, with the Chase Street water tower on the front. Go get you one at flagpole.bigcartel.com. Mack also sometimes draws portraits for a dollar.

ROBERT NEWSOME: The co-organizer of Fluke for these many years (with Dean), Newsome won’t just be manning the door or the merch station or pointing you toward the cake (there’s always cake, both vegan and not). He also usually has copies of his wrestling zine, The Atomic Elbow, now into its 25th issue. Over the years, it’s featured comics

from folks like Box Brown—who later wrote a whole book on Andre the Giant and now has a new one about Andy Kaufman—Evan Dorkin, Jarrett Williams and others.

KLON WALDRIP: Former Video Library and Vision Video employee Waldrip really knows his stuff about movies, and he’s put out zines (both comics and non-comics) about cult films, but he’s also been drawing his “Power Profiles” series for years. On Instagram at @powerprofiles or available in print form (including probably at Fluke), they’re one-page bios of people like Jean Seberg, Bushwick Bill, Dolores Huerta, Katherine Dunham and more, each hand-lettered and illustrated with a big picture of the subject.

The great thing about Fluke is that, even if you think you’re only going to fanboy out about one comics creator, you’re almost guaranteed to discover a new one while you’re there. There are professionals and amateurs, kids and grown-ups, publishers and self-publishers, people who write and people who draw, plus buttons, stickers, toys, comics-themed jewelry and plenty more. What’s New at the Lyndon House JURIED EXHIBITION, PLUS KRISTEN HYINK’S ‘MODERN TRAUMA’

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com Reflecting a wide variety of influences and styles, the Lyndon House Arts Center’s 43rd Juried Exhibition includes paintings, photographs, sculptures, textiles, etchings, mixed media and everything in between.

Focused on identifying challenging, playful and boundary-pushing artwork, guest juror Wassan Al-Khudhairi, chief curator at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, selected 126 pieces from a record-breaking pool of 373 artists.

The exhibit is thoughtfully arranged, with many complementary works hanging in proximity to enhance color, mood or subject. Helen Kuykendall’s “Flying Home” portrait of Snoopy soaring through the air appears as if he might jump canvases and land in Cheryl Washburn’s peaceful oil painting of a landscape. James Preston’s simple yet boldly colored sunset echoes

the color blocks of the neighboring handpainted silk by René Shoemaker. Emily Tatum’s expressive clay figure feels at home next to Will Ingram’s awesome four-eyed character daydreaming whom it should ask to prom.

Funneling money back into the artist community, submission fees and donations from guilds are used towards 11 merit awards in a variety of fields. The Arts Center Choice Award, given to an emerging artist each year, comes with an opportunity to hold a solo exhibition in the Lounge Gallery.

Last year’s recipient, Kristen Hyink, is a self-taught illustrator, sculptor and musician who relocated to Athens in 2015 from her hometown of Austin, TX. Her black-and-white illustration series, “Modern Trauma,” is an audio-visual immersion story reflecting on the resiliency of nature, the process of self-discovery and the beauty of feminine strength. Often using a magnifying lens and a .15mm tipped pen, her lush environments are dense with detail, typically hosting between 15–30 layers of ink and often taking multiple months to complete. The series began following an illustration created in the wake of the Women’s March in Atlanta that depicted a woman riding an elk through a swamp with a white flag in tow. Subsequent scenes created a narrative backtracking her journey from becoming lost in the

wilderness, overcoming her fears and transforming into a powerful warrior.

“I became very focused on the character of the woman riding the elk, and everything that she represented to me,” says Hyink.

“She has antlers, something that I find highly symbolic. I see antlers as a crown, showing distinction and grace. I also see them as antennae, receiving and transmitting information, branching out of the head growing towards higher awareness. They represent the passage of time, with their seasonal regeneration a metaphor for personal cycles—starting soft and vulnerable, then scraped and bloodied into a beautiful weapon for survival, more formidable each year.”

Hoping to fully immerse visitors within her narrative, Hyink’s illustrations are accompanied by recordings that fuse sight and sound and intensify the emotional atmosphere of each environment. A self-proclaimed bedroom musician, she enjoys experimenting with various instruments—flute, guitar, dulcimer, ukulele, synthesizers, vocals—and while she was heavily involved in Austin’s music scene as a supporter, she considers this project to be her first serious attempt at pursuing her own music. The soundtrack In the Company of Beasts, which is available at moderntrauma. bandcamp.com, consists of audio collages created through Ableton with the guidance of music partner Chris Hrasky. Sounds of nature captured through a field recorder are beautifully integrated with the instrumentation, striking a delicate balance resembling the relationship between mankind and wilderness.

“I have always been captivated by cryptozoology, legends and monsters. I related to what I assumed were these misunderstood mythical beings, hiding away from civilization, watching it from the shadows,” says Hyink. “I’m an escapist, and fantasy has always been there to help me deal with the chaos of life. I often abscond into the wilderness, where I am reminded of what it is to be alive, truly. Nature is a sacred force that rules us all, and it is my greatest goal to live in harmony with it. I spend a lot of time outside, and a lot of time with animals. There are worlds within worlds within worlds everywhere you look in nature, and that to me is pure magic.”

An opening reception for the Juried Exhibition will be held Thursday, Mar. 22 from 6–8 p.m., and artist talks will be held every Thursday in April at 6 p.m. It will remain on view through May 5, the same day as a ceremony to celebrate new sculptures by Harold Rittenberry. Hyink’s illustrations can be visited through June 2. f

The al pastor seems to have pineapple in it—the right way to prepare it—and is probably the best of the meats, but all of them are good.

You can dress your own tacos from a bar of various toppings on the counter, which includes standards like cilantro, raw Taqueria Juaritos onions, lime and thinly sliced radishes, but also some truly notable hot pickled onions, which one-two good and worth eating. Weekends, per trapunch your sinuses. The doubled-up corn dition, bring some extra offerings, including tortillas, which don’t appear to be made in menudo (unfortunately still not my cup of house, taste as though they’re made from a tea, but I’ll keep trying it), pozole (which more finely ground masa than most, which wasn’t ready yet when I went, but seems means they don’t interfere much with the worth a trip back) and a stellar shrimp soup fillings. All three sauces—a milder green, that isn’t spicy (some are), but instead relies a hotter green and a sneaky red that tastes on a lovely, complex tomato broth packed

with vegetables. Pale-green tubers that taste faintly of zucchini could be chayote and are especially good infused with the broth.

The place is worth a trip out of your way, and you can call ahead if you’re in a hurry.

mini-coolers, stuffed animals, etc.).

The ice cream comes from Greenwood, out of Atlanta, although Four Fat Cows does some custom flavors. If you want something interesting, stay away from the Superman ice cream, which is the same basic vanilla jazzed up with a bunch of food coloring that it is anywhere else—for example, at Scoops in Madison, which also offers Greenwood ice cream. The pistachio doesn’t hold up against the one that La Michoacana… Es Natural (in front of the Ingles in Hull and inside the Eastside Cali N Tito’s) makes, and indeed, that store still does a better job, for my money, at extracting the real essence of even a seemingly simple flavor, like strawberry, and creating ice cream that embodies it. That established, the high-butterfat ice cream that Four Fat Cows offers is still ice cream, and a lot of it is quite good. A float that combines mango sorbet with a spicy ginger ale is a good and grown-up-tasting concoction.

The “cowzones,” open-face tarts with a sweet dough and savory toppings, are nothing impressive, but the sweeter baked goods are better.

The store offers both free wi-fi and a wide array of gluten-free options, including cones and cookies. It also makes puffle cones of the type mobile vendor Nedza’s Waffles offers, should your interest in Instagram equal your interest in ice cream. Its staff members are happy to offer you as many samples as you like, reacting with endless patience to sticky-fingered children. Silver Screen Jews THE ATHENS JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR ITS 10TH YEAR

he Athens Jewish Film Festival is back, and bigger and better than ever. Events span five days, beginning with a Sunday gala at the Georgia Museum of Art and ending with a closing party at the Rialto Club, Hotel Indigo’s venue. In between are movies and shorts from the Ukraine, Australia, the United States, Germany, Israel, Canada,

France and Russia.

This marks the 10th year of the festival, which began after organizers realized the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival didn’t want to expand its reach to venues in Athens. So movie buffs Abe and Carmen Tesser and several other Athens residents decided to stage a film festival of their own.

Body and Soul Illuminates a Complex Relationship From Peace Corps volunteer to African-American literature professor to filmmaker, the career of Robert Philipson has evolved. But a constant thread has been the search for cultural similarities and differences between minority groups. Selfdescribed as a Jewish queer, Philipson finds himself in “an interesting position visà-vis identity politics.”

In his film Body and Soul: An American Bridge, which will close this year’s AJFF, Philipson uses the beloved jazz standard as a means to explore the sometimes fraught and complicated relationship between African Americans and Jews.

The song, one of the most recorded in jazz, was written by Jewish composer Johnny Green in 1929. Performed by torch singer Libby Holman and many others, including Louis Armstrong, in 1935 “Body and Soul” helped smash the color barrier in popular music when it was recorded by the Benny Goodman Trio with black pianist Teddy Wilson at the keys.

The documentary has been featured at numerous Jewish and African-American film festivals. The filmmaker says, ”Different audiences focus on different things.

Black audiences tend to focus on black things, Jews focus on Jewish things.”

Scenes of interactions between, for example, Jewish managers and black performers show relationships that can be unequal and exploitative and, naturally, “black audiences’ radar tends to go up.”

Philipson, who describes his career as “a hobby that got out of control,” initially took a course in videography in order to film his father walking around the Chicago neighborhood where he grew up. But he was smitten with scriptwriting and other elements covered in the class. He completed his first professional video, Ma Rainey’s Lesbian Licks, in 2005. It played in 20 different film festivals.

“Music is one thing I’m interested in. I’ve learned to look at cultural production in a social context. A work of art is a work of art, but it also says something about the society out of which it comes,” Philipson says. “I have a particular fondness for the Great American Songbook. It’s music I grew up with.”

Philipson will spend some of his time in Athens researching entertainer Bob Cole for his next feature-length film. Says the filmmaker, “One of the benefits of my research in music is that I’ve been led to discover really interesting cultural corners in America.” [Barbette Houser]

“It was the right thing at the right time,” says Abe Tesser, noting that local art-house theater Ciné had just opened. “We wanted it to be a community event, not just something for Jews.”

Longtime board member Ron Zell, this year’s festival president, says the board works hard to keep the films affordable to the general public and to showcase films from across the globe that focus on Jewish life, history and traditions. Last year was the only one in which the festival didn’t turn a profit, but, says Zell, “we’ve lasted longer than the well-known Robert Osborne Classic Film Festival,” which ended in 2010.

The Athens Jewish Film Festival has partnered with both the Willson Center for the Humanities and Arts at the University of Georgia and the Georgia Center for the Humanities to feature other events throughout the year. This year’s celebration began with a free showing of The Band’s Visit at Ciné in January. The theater was crowded with more than 100 people, says Tesser, “and it wasn’t just Jews, it was a lot of other people from the community.”

At some of the events are Jews who may not belong to the local synagogue, Congregation Children of Israel, but want to connect with their heritage, according to Tesser. The festival has become an established feature in Athens, something the community looks forward to and often helps with. The ushers at this year’s screenings are members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

applying for nonprofit status, and board members scrambled to get the word out. Now, a social media presence keeps people up to date.

“Opportunities like the Jewish Film Festival [are] just one reason I love Athens,” says Realtor Jane Mayer. She says she loves the variety of films and looks forward to the festival every year.

In terms of the festival’s future, Zell says, “It’s difficult to maintain the status quo, as the board is made up of only 13 members, plus two associates, doing the bulk of the work. We need new blood to advance the festival forward.”

Getting donations is becoming more difficult, Zell says. None of the board’s volunteers are professional salespeople.

The festival will kick off with a gala at the Georgia Museum of Art on Mar. 24 that includes a dinner, adult beverages and a showing of The Women’s Balcony.

Zell says the board decided not to schedule screenings late at night. Films to be screened at Ciné include Monkey Business: The Adventures of Curious George’s Creators at 2 p.m., Tevye’s Daughters at 4 p.m. and Monsieur Mayonnaise at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 25; Paradise at 5 p.m. and Rabbi Wolff at 7:45 p.m. on Mar. 26; and Between Worlds at 5 p.m. and 90 Minute War at 7:15 p.m. on Mar. 27.

Through some typical plot wizardry, Simon’s secret becomes known to a toady student named Martin (Logan Miller), who has a crush on Simon’s friend and the resident new girl, Abby (Alexandra Shipp).

In exchange for keeping Simon’s secret, he must help Martin woo Abby, forcing Simon to treat his friends very poorly. Not only will Simon be outed if his secret is revealed; he will also scare off a potential love interest, known only by his online moniker, Blue.

The plot machinations of Love, Simon will not surprise anyone who grew up on John Hughes movies or the movies spawned by the generation of filmmakers who grew up on John Hughes movies, like director Greg Berlanti. In Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker’s script, TV whiz Berlanti (see almost every DC character currently on The CW, as well as The WB’s most underrated series, “Everwood”), has found feature material to match his small-screen strengths. One almost wishes Simon were a series with still more eps upon which to binge. f
