Comp Plan Confusion PLUS, SOUTHERN JOURNALISM, THE CITY-COUNTY DIVIDE AND MORE NEWS

Two weeks after hearing complaints about a proposed future development map that’s part of Athens-Clarke County’s once-a-decade comprehensive plan, ACC planning commissioners did some soul-searching about issues like equity.

Dozens of people showed up at a comp plan steering committee meeting earlier this month to oppose the way that commercial corridors through historically black neighborhoods, such as West Broad Street, Baxter Street and Hawthorne Avenue, were being treated. As planners consolidated future land-use categories, those areas were labeled “general business” rather than “Main Street business.”

What difference does it make? Planners said they made those changes to more accurately reflect the zoning that already exists, which is “commercial general,” the most permissive category, which allows things like big-box stores. And the land-use map isn’t zoning. It doesn’t carry the force of law; it’s just a glimpse at what the community envisions being built 20 years from now.

But many people, including ACC Commissioner Melissa Link, don’t think those corridors ought to be commercial-general, pointing to furor over a rumored development on the Varsity property at Milledge and Broad. A conversation on downzoning to something like the less intensive commercial-neighborhood category will have to come later, but if it does happen, relabeling corridors as “Main Street” business will make it much harder for a developer to argue for a rezoning.

After hearing those concerns, the steering committee (mainly made up of planning commissioners) made the requested changes. Concerns about equity in local

planning decisions, as well as the vagueness of the entire comp plan, remain.

Engagement on equity across racial and class lines is at an all-time high, and the government needs to do a better job of educating citizens on these documents, said one speaker, Kelli Clifton. Tyler Dewey, executive director of BikeAthens, and others said they like the goals expressed in the plan but are frustrated that the path to get there is vague. Imani Scott-Blackwell came armed with a specific platform gleaned from Movement for Black Lives, including a progressive income tax, a mansion tax, a tax on real-estate speculators, tax breaks for low-income homeowners and variable utility rates based on income (at least some of which would be illegal in Georgia).

The criticism was well received. “This community is growing, and a younger generation is coming along,” planning commissioner Hank Joiner said. “They need to be sitting up here in these chairs, not old guys like me.”

The comp plan has to be couched in terms like “work towards” a goal to avoid consequences for not achieving them, ACC Planning Director Brad Griffin said. “If you submit a document where you’re going to save the world, and you come back in five years and say, ‘Well, those were great ideas, but we never got to any of them,’ [the state Department of Community Affairs] would eventually get to the point where they start withholding funds,” he said.

It became clear as the meeting went on that no one—not the citizens who spoke nor planning commissioners themselves— had a clear idea of what the planning commission’s role is or should be in ensuring social equity. The planning commission is merely an advisory board, but members

Sims, who was first elected two years after city-county unification in 1991, complained about lack of services for rural residents, such as sewer and trash pickup. “We are one Athens,” he said. “We have a shared goal and a shared destiny. Gone will be the days of city versus county. Gone will be the days of allowing a few elite to determine what their fellow citizens deserve.”

In the past, the commission has opted not to extend sewer service into rural areas, worrying that dense development will follow and, particularly in the case of Trail Creek, about the potential environmental impact of sewage spills into sensitive ecosystems that make up the source of Athens’ drinking water. Sims characterized those decisions as anti-affordable housing, and criticized efforts to extend buffers “around ditches and creeks” as “tak[ing] over people’s entire yards,” although buffers only prevent development.

“Living outside the Loop [shouldn’t] condemn you to five trash trucks running down your street every trash day,” he said. You should not have to shell out thousands of dollars and hours of your time to take down a tree that is threatening your house. You cannot and should

said they do consider it within their limited purview of making recommendations on individual zoning decisions. As an example, Lucy Rowland pointed to the recent QuikTrip approval, where planning commissioners pushed for improved access to the Firefly Trail that will run behind it. “It always comes into play whenever we consider a rezoning, I think,” she said.

Planning commissioners also emerged with a new commitment to putting pressure on the Mayor and Commission, the policymakers, by passing resolutions urging them to study issues like affordable housing. “It’s our charge to consider equity, and people affected need to help us see,” planning commissioner Alice Kinman said.

The trash issue deserves some background: Inside the old city limits, the “urban services district,” ACC picks up trash (which those residents pay for), and private haulers pick it up in what’s now known as the “general services district.” Based on complaints from constituents, about 10 years ago the commission considered taking over trash pickup for the whole county (which was rejected because of the millions of dollars in up-front costs to buy trucks) or franchising—appointing one company to pick up trash in each neighborhood. Private haulers (and many of their customers) strongly opposed both options, and it’s tough to square the idea of the local government being unfriendly to business with the idea that it should ban a half-dozen businesses from operating in the county. Ultimately, the commission put a cap on the number of private haulers.

Qualifying for local races—mayor, six commission seats, five school board seats and Superior Court judge—as well as Congress and state offices from governor on down to state representative, takes place next week, so we’ll officially know who’s running for what.

The qualifying period runs from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday, Mar. 5 through Thursday, Mar. 8 and ends at noon Friday, Mar. 9. Candidates for local office can sign up at the ACC Board of Elections, while state and federal qualifying takes place at the state capitol. Be prepared to plunk down a fee equivalent to 3 percent of the job’s

Nobody is obsessed over as much as we are, either. Grady College professor Valerie Boyd said she has a friend in Brooklyn, NY who, when she tells people she’s from the South, “they look at her like she came in on the Underground Railroad. They don’t understand the contemporary South.”

And the contemporary South is a diverse South—urban and rural, Ozarks and Delta, with an increasing number of immigrants mixed in. “The South is not a homogenous region, and that’s something people who aren’t from the South don’t understand,” said Eliza Borné, editor of the Arkansasbased literary magazine Oxford American.

But that’s not why people find the South so fascinating. It’s the conflicts within our past that reverberate to this day. “Our nation’s most painful history [slavery] has its roots in the South, and obviously we’re still reckoning with that,” Borné said, in a sentiment echoed by other panelists.

The South has made progress, but the “Dukes of Hazzard” stereotypes remain.

Perhaps more insidious than “some good ol’ boys” who “never mean you no harm” but happen to have a Confederate flag painted

Bailey has been fairly quiet and did not raise any money as of the end of January, leading to speculation that he might not run for a third term, but he told Flagpole he is absolutely, positively running again. And a new candidate has jumped into the District 2 race to replace Sims: Mariah Parker, aka Linqua Franqa, a hip-hop artist, activist and doctoral student in linguistics who was featured on last week’s cover.

Parker, who had been running District 9 candidate Tommy Valentine’s campaign, is running on a platform of affordable housing, child care, transportation options, job training, a broader anti-discrimination ordinance and access to healthy food. She’ll host a launch party at 5 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 4 at her home at 387 Flint St. CORRECTION: Finally, this column mistakenly reported Feb. 14 that the Clarke County NAACP had contributed to commission District 9 candidate Ovita Thornton’s campaign. In fact, Thornton wrote a check to the NAACP to buy an ad in the organization’s Freedom Fund banquet.

It was the topic of an exchange between Boyd, who wondered why it didn’t feature more people of color sipping $12 cocktails, and Fausset, who insinuated that at least some of its subscribers didn’t want to see that.

So how does one tell the story of the contemporary South? For Fausset and his national audience, it involves “helping people understand the South” and “exploding stereotypes” while also producing stories that “feel right” to Southerners.

For Scalawag, a North-Carolina based journal and website covering politics and the arts, it means “putting resources in the hands of communities” so they can tell their own stories for a larger audience, Managing Editor Alysia Nicole Harris said.

Flagpole’s revenue comes from old-fashioned ad sales, which, McCommons acknowledged, is a struggle and always has been. Scalawag, a nonprofit, is funded mostly by grants and subscriptions, and for years its editors worked for free in their spare time so writers and photographers could be paid. Subscriptions and ad sales pay for OA, also a nonprofit, although it’s also been branching out into memberships and events.

The Bitter Southerner might have the most unique model, although Reece said he wouldn’t recommend trying to replicate it. “I certainly never thought I’d work for a journalistic enterprise funded primarily by the sale of T-shirts and dish towels,” he said.

Having known Pete since well before I came to work for him, he has devoted most of his life not only to informing Athens, but advocating for Athens and working to make the city a better place, which is the true spirit of

In 2016, Gov. Nathan Deal allocated $75 million for capital expenses for transit—the first time the state had ever funded public transit. Athens Transit received a $6 million GO! Transit grant, which, combined with $2.4 million in matching local and federal funding, paid for the 12 buses. UGA received $10 million for 19 electric buses that arrived on campus earlier this year.

To get into specifics, the new 40-foot buses are 2018 Gillig low-floor heavy-duty models with a new design and color scheme built in Livermore, CA. They seat 37 passengers—including six seats reserved for seniors and the mobility impaired—in a new configuration facing each other, which Athens Transit Director Butch McDuffie said will make the them easier to clean and make passengers more comfortable. There’s also standing room for 24 people.

In addition, the buses feature bike racks, internal and external security cameras and an automated vehicle locating system that will allow riders to track buses through the MyStop app or the Athens Transit website.

They look good, too—so good that Denson said she’s asked the commission to reconsider selling ads on buses. “I hate to see something so beautiful get messed up,” she said. f

Did Deal Hand Cagle the Gov’s Race?

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com As Gov. Nathan Deal, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, and House Speaker David Ralston faced the crowd at a news conference last week, they were all grinning like Cheshire cats.

The widest grin of all may been the one sported by Cagle, and little wonder. After all, Deal was about to make an announcement that could very well wrap up the governor’s race for Cagle.

The three had agreed on a bill (HB 918) that would lower Georgia’s top income tax rate from 6 percent to 5.75 percent for the 2018 tax year, and potentially to 5.5 percent the year after, if the legislature determined it wouldn’t blow a hole in the state budget. The bill also doubles the standard deduction Georgians could take on their tax returns. For married couples filing jointly, it would go from $3,000 to $6,000.

This was all a result of the massive federal income tax cut that Congress passed in late December, a cut that primarily benefits America’s wealthiest taxpayers. The many changes in the federal tax law had caused a major misalignment with Georgia’s tax code, creating the potential for the state to realize a windfall increase in revenue over the next five years estimated at between $3.5 billion–$5 billion.

Deal wanted to wait and see what the full effects of the federal changes were before adjusting the state tax law, but with an election year coming up, Cagle and others running for election insisted on doing something this session. In true General Assembly fashion, this complicated measure was introduced on Tuesday, rammed through committee without any real vetting, and moved on to the floor by Thursday for a vote. There was not even a fiscal note outlining the bill’s financial impact, which is usually a legal requirement for tax legislation.

Rep. Carolyn Hugley (D-Columbus) tried to remind her colleagues of what happened the last time they rushed to pass such a sloppily drafted piece of legislation. In 2012, when lawmakers changed the system of taxing the license plates on vehicles, that bill was also introduced late in the session, rushed through committee and then placed before legislators who had no time to really examine it, but were told to vote on it.

Legislators have been trying to patch holes in that vehicle tax law ever since. “We have to keep coming back year after year after year to fix it,” Hugley said. “We need to be thoughtful and take our time to learn the full impact before we make a decision.”

HB 918 also gives a break worth $50 million primarily to Delta Air Lines by eliminating the sales tax on jet fuel. Evidently, legislators forgot that they voted three years ago to take away this exemption. Rep. Earl Ehrhart (R-Powder Springs) insisted on that because Delta’s executives had opposed a religious freedom bill. Ehrhart evidently got over his snit at Delta. This time, he voted to give them back their tax break.

HB 918 is now out of the House and has been transmitted to the Senate, where perhaps senators will actually take the time to read it before they vote on it—but don’t hold your breath.

The real purpose of the bill is to give Cagle something to run on as he seeks the Republican nomination for governor. (Cagle is the favorite of the capitol establishment as the anointed successor to Deal.) Cagle can claim that he gave “hard-working Georgians” the chance to “keep more of their money in their own pockets.” That’s a potent issue for an election year, and it will make it that much more difficult for whoever wins the Democratic nomination, Stacey Evans or Stacey Abrams. f

It says something about political discourse too: The turning point involves its hero, Frank Dux (Van Damme) proudly punching someone squarely in the dick.

Trump is full of it, and the real-life Dux was, too. Like Gatsby in a karate gi, West Coast martial arts instructor and veteran Dux turned his life into a grandiose story of covert operations and victory in a fighting tournament called the Kumite, which he recounted to karate magazines not so hot on fact checking.

Most movies are indoctrination. Bill Clinton, who signed the infamous 1994 crime bill, claimed one of his favorite movies was High Noon, a Western about a marshal who wants to be peaceful but just can’t because he feels responsible for all the baddies. George W. Bush loved Field of Dreams, a dim, signifying baseball movie dipped in nostalgia. Like Trump, Barack Obama apparently loves The Godfather, a lament for a certain kind of criminality, one that’s more decent, respectable—appropriate for 44, who quietly drone-bombed the hell out of many and deported plenty.

Trump is all about bloodsport. His reality shows were bloodsport, the business world he stomped around in is bloodsport, the primaries were all about drawing blood for him, and when he offers up something like turning teachers into armed Charles Bronsons so they can get into shootouts with school shooters, that’s bloodsport.

Our reality show president, the totally logical next step after Hollywood actor Reagan.

Remember, that New Yorker article said Trump turned off 1996’s Michael, a sentimental snooze starring John Travolta as a schlubby angel, 20 minutes in and put on Bloodsport instead. And as Trump watched Van Damme drop down into a split, stick his fist straight out, and bop his opponent in the junk in slow-motion, a unique example of how Trump pops the hood on reality followed.

“You want to write that Donald Trump was loving this ridiculous JeanClaude Van Damme movie,” Trump said to reporter Singer. “But are you willing to put in there that you were loving it, too?”

He dares Singer to embrace Bloodsport and suggests that if he doesn’t he’s just denying himself a hard truth. This is the typically Trumpian dick-punch: His bullshit detector is strong, though his own propensity for bullshit is unmatched.

Though the Ol’ Bloviator has some qualms about wholesale destruction of flags, statues and other monuments to the Confederacy, he has been hollering for years that they have no place on state or local government property, as they imply a continuing affinity to the cause of white supremacy.

It should follow readily enough then that no public highway or bridge should bear the name of Eugene Talmadge, one of 20th Century America’s foremost political fomenters of racial hatred and persecution.

Even in these sad times, it seems difficult to believe that the powers that be in Georgia would resist an effort to rechristen the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge in Savannah in honor of Juliette Gordon Low, a Savannah native who founded the Girl Scouts.

In his three terms (1926–1932) as Georgia’s commissioner of agriculture, Talmadge was charged with violating a state law requiring him to deposit fees collected on fertilizer in the state treasury (rather than in banks owned by his friends, as he was wont to do). He was also criticized by a state Senate investigative committee for paying himself and family members more than $40,000 in salaries and expenses, and using state funds to underwrite his annual trips to the Kentucky Derby.

His tour de force, however, was a purported scheme to raise hog prices in Georgia by using state money without authorization to buy 82 rail-car loads of hogs, which were to be purchased at prices just under the going rate in Chicago, and having them shipped there for resale. The hogs lost considerable weight in transit, and other complications resulted in the loss of more than $12,000 in state funds.

Talmadge readily confessed to his loyal following in the countryside that he had sure

Vowing to purge Georgia’s colleges of sympathizers with “racial equality,” he inflicted mayhem on the University of Georgia, particularly in his attacks on College of Education Dean Walter Cocking. When Talmadge’s rampage was done, a number of faculty and administrators had been ousted, as had several members of the Board of Regents who were deemed less than totally comfortable with Talmadge’s dictatorial tactics. Not surprisingly, an official finding of “gross political interference” in the affairs of the state’s white public universities led to their immediate loss of accreditation and, later, to Talmadge’s failure to win re-election in 1942.

racial attitudes of a man who freely admitted to horse-whipping a black man until he yelled “Sweet Jesus!” Racial tensions were ratcheted up with every Talmadge warning of a “nigra takeover” in the 1946 campaign, leading him to sanctimoniously counsel “wise Negroes” to “stay away from white folks’ ballot boxes” on Election Day. In the end, though relative racial moderate James V. Carmichael claimed a majority of the popular vote, Talmadge amassed enough county unit votes to win his fourth term as governor, albeit one he would never serve.

The most tragic immediate consequence of the racially charged campaign came roughly a week after the primary, when two black couples were gunned down in broad daylight by a mob of whites at Moore’s Ford in Walton County.

Several other reports of violence against blacks surfaced over the next few weeks—Talmadge’s victory having signaled that, as one journalist put it, it was now open season on blacks, “and every pinheaded Georgia cracker and bigoted Ku Kluxer figured he had a license.”

Meanwhile, Talmadge’s health disintegrated rapidly, and he died without being sworn in as governor a few days before Christmas in 1946. His unwitting bequest to the state was the fierce and altogether ludicrous struggle to claim his office that led to the notorious “three governors” controversy, which revealed Georgia politics at its most venal, benighted and self-destructive worst, and thus offered a fitting conclusion to a sad and sorry chapter in the state’s history.

Beyond striking a decidedly foreboding tone for the gateway to one of the nation’s most inviting cities, any bridge that continues to celebrate so toxic a historical legacy as that of Eugene Talmadge is, in itself, an obstacle to overcoming that legacy. f

thens residents got a taste—literally and figuratively—of Muslim culture at the Al Huda Islamic Center’s open house on Saturday, Feb. 24.

“I think that in the climate we are in right now this is incredibly important,” said Lamarana Balde, a secretary at the center, located on South Milledge Avenue. “If we Muslims aren’t showing people who we are, other third parties do it. Islam is about friendship, not what people see on TV.” The event allowed visitors to try ethnic dishes like samosa, pakora and basbousa, ask questions about and take home a Quran and tour the mosque. Volunteers of all ages waited in a tent to assist women with trying on hijabs (head scarves) or painting henna on their hands. There was also a station for kids’ activities, like balloon animal-making and face painting.

Around 1:30 p.m., presenter Amin Tomeh gave an overview of the religion of Islam and what it is like to be an American Muslim to a crowd of 50 barefoot people. He discussed various stereotypes held about the beliefs of the religion and explained that often one should “separate what is believed by the culture of a country from the beliefs of the actual religion Activities at the open house included henna—temporary body that residents practice.” Questions were encourart—for women and children. aged and abundant, and the intended 30-minute presentation turned into an hour-and-a-half discussion.

“We are so happy to see questions and the numbers present here today,” Balde said. “It shows us how we can improve our relationship with this Athens community.”

Students and locals of all ages and backgrounds made up most of the crowd of couple hundred people who drifted in and out throughout the warm and sunny day. Volunteers were very welcoming, and willingly chatted and answered the questions of anyone who came up to them.

Alexa Schaefer, a junior at the University of Georgia, came with a group of six students from the UGA Catholic Center. She said that she found the event interesting and very informative. “[This kind of event] is important, absolutely,” said Schaefer. “Everyone was welcoming and so open to sharing. I learned so much from the presentation and it was great that [Tomeh] was so open to questions from everyone… I think it’s necessary for people to get to know the different communities in their city.” f

The Flaming Lips Remain Bananas

T

he Flaming Lips have a reputation. Their shows are visually dazzling, about as close as one can get to a brain-frying acid-trip adventure without actually dropping a tab. The music itself can be experimental, so, fairly or not, the long-running rock band is often branded as psychedelic.

And there’s some truth in that. Like most musicians, frontman Wayne Coyne is subconsciously influenced by the music of his youth, and he says there was no escaping the psych-rock sounds of the 1960s and ’70s.

“I had older brothers and an older sister with all these fucking crazy friends,” he recalls. “Not very many of them were musicians, but they were playing music nonstop, taking drugs, riding motorcycles—just doing the craziest, craziest shit. Whatever music they were listening to when I was 10 years old was exploding my mind, and there’s some of that in me… If you looked inside the building of my brain, you would see an explosion down in the lower basement, and it’s splattered with the blood of The Beatles and Jesus Christ and Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd.”

That said, Coyne believes The Flaming Lips are equally indebted to the DIY ethic and energy of punk rock. “We could have never existed as a normal group playing psychedelic music,” he says. “It’s our version of punk rock. It just happens to sound slightly like The Grateful Dead.”

Among casual fans, The Flaming Lips are probably best known for “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1,” a song about a Japanese girl training her body and mind to kung-fu fight an army of colorful robo-warriors. As fun and catchy as that tune is, though, it paints a limited picture of a band that has been touring steadily since 1983 and most recently released its 14th studio album, Oczy Mlody. (Coyne and bassist Michael Lee Ivins are the only remaining

founding members, though longtime multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd is also still with the group.) At this point, the Lips have a vast catalog of music.

Speaking to Flagpole from his home in Oklahoma City, Coyne explains that they generally draw crowds of a few thousand, which is about what you’d expect for an established band with a cult following. But due to their reputation as an absolutely bananas live band, they’re often given prominent festival slots—and playing those huge shows is a whole different beast.

“If you’re playing for 60,000 people, a lot of them aren’t going to know who you are,” Coyne says. “Maybe a quarter of the people know what you’re doing, but the other 75 per-

cent are just there to party. Unless you’re Bruce Springsteen or Coldplay, you’re not playing to an entire stadium that’s there just to see you. But we’ve found that if you get a small group of people very excited, you get a bigger group fairly excited.”

The Flaming Lips have always embraced their role as entertainers. In the live setting, Coyne and company incorporate any number of absurd props, costumes and video displays, from dancing Teletubbies to unicorns to just plain naked people. Coyne has made a habit of making grand entrances via a descending UFO, and at virtually every show, he gets in a plastic “space bubble” and rolls offstage like a hamster in a ball, relying on hands in the crowd to keep him afloat.

The space bubble, especially, has become a fixture of the

Lips’ show. After so many years of touring and playing festivals, Coyne says he’s gotten inside it 1,000 times. In fact, he recalls only one time he didn’t: Before a show somewhere in South America, a concert promoter was afraid the crowd would attempt to burst his bubble, literally. And that he might get stabbed.

The bubble is a great tool for heightening moments, but it remains a nerve-wracking experience for Coyne.

“It’s like when Steven Spielberg makes you feel like you’re on the beach in Saving Private Ryan,” he says. “There’s no sound, and you’re claustrophobic, and it’s hot, and you can hear your heart beating. But when you’re in a Steven Spielberg movie, it’s insanely dangerous and you’re about to die… I’m just trying to make sure I don’t crush somebody’s face.”

It’s not a baseless fear, Coyne says. Almost inevitably, there’s a pocket of concert-goers who are somehow unaware of the giant plastic ball that’s about to roll over them.

“I actually get concerned about those people who don’t know what’s coming,” he says. “It could be a great show in every other respect, but they’ll still go home and say, ‘Some weird old guy landed on my head.’”

But it usually works out OK. Looking back on decades of crazy antics, Coyne says the bad stuff—like crushing a fan’s face—tends to stick out, because it’s the exception.

“For the most part, it’s all been wonderful,” he says. “It’s one giant, giant ocean of wonderful memories.” f

Country Hits and Chicken Sh*t DALE WATSON IS AS OFF THE CUFF AS ALWAYS

A

country traditionalist before country traditionalists became cool again, Dale Watson upholds the music he’s known and loved for decades. Since his teenage years, the 55-year-old singer and guitarist has continually played music halls and holes-in-the-wall around his Texas home base and beyond. With plenty of young “Ameripolitan” artists taking up the cause, Watson now finds himself as a vocal leader and elder statesman in a global underground roots music scene.

“I’m a natural extension of the music I grew up doing,” he says. “Everybody is doing the music they’re connected to, and there is an intention to stay close to the roots.”

One has to see Watson live to fully appreciate his dedication to old-school, unscripted honky-tonk excitement. He only made a set list once in recent memory, and that was just to suit the rules of “Austin City Limits.”

“It’s just more fun for me to do a show off the cuff,” he says. “Traveling all over and just doing everything from punk clubs to bigger concert halls—going by a set list is just never a fun way for me to do it. It needs to be organic with the crowds.”

Playing without a set list allows both the setting and the audience to dictate what gets played from Watson’s massive catalog of albums and equally deep well of classic cover songs. “We got a lot of theater shows, and it’s more of a listening audience at that point,” he says. “When we’re playing a rowdy place, people want to hear more rowdy music.”

Regional tastes also dictate song selection. While Midwesterners and New Yorkers love tales about life on the road, Watson finds that Southerners prefer Merle Haggard’s “Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down” and other drinking songs.

Sometimes, Watson takes his celebration of the hillbilly experience a step further, allowing the audience to play a round of Chicken Shit Bingo for cash. Derived from an old Southern tradition of playing a highstakes game of chance with farm animals, Watson’s version uses a live chicken to fairly pick—or peck—the winning number.

“It actually has been going on for 18 years now,” Watson says of his version of the game. “It’s kind of hard to explain, but people don’t realize you use a real chicken. I did a Chicken Shit tour where I carried the pen around. Of course, the venue had to provide the chicken. For $2, you get a random number out of a bag. If it’s the same number the chicken picks on the bottom of the cage, you’ve won money.

“At some places we could do it, and at others we couldn’t,” he continues. “It’s not gambling, because the house isn’t taking a piece of the pie. The only reason we couldn’t do it at some places is because if they serve food, it’s different. Can’t bring livestock in there. It’s been going on in Texas and all over the South for a long time.”

Known for such original compositions as “Country My Ass”—a bemoaning of modern music based on Waylon Jennings and Haggard’s hilarious interpretation of the CMA Awards’ acronym—Watson takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to keeping the

past alive without mocking his musical predecessors. This humor is a breath of fresh air, considering many of the better artists under the Americana banner normally take a more straightforward approach to storytelling.

Watson gets more help spreading the good word nowadays from the country, Western swing and rockabilly acts celebrated by his annual Ameripolitan Awards, hosted Feb. 13 in Memphis. But don’t expect him to let Nikki Lane, Whitey Morgan and the 78’s or other peers evangelize the masses without him anytime soon.

Watson stays on the road constantly— though Saturday will be his first-ever stop in Athens—and hopes to have a new album, recorded recently at Sam Phillips Recording Studio, out later this year. f

NINE SHADES OF GRAY: Marching Banana Records just released the debut full-length from Athens/Atlanta artist Delorean Gray (aka Jacob Chisenhall), Star Tropics. Its nine tracks work so well together in a near-perfect distillation of hazy imaginations of what the ’80s sounded like, vaporwave aesthetics and contemporaneous bliss. It’s full of appropriate synths and a slight amount of self-effacement, but mostly it’s an homage to what used to be called “adult contemporary” pop. The thing is, though, this only works because the influences are so clearly 20th Century. Anything more recent would render this as weak, pandering easy listening. To crib a phrase from a place I’ve forgotten, the tools of the past become the art forms of the future.

Utilitarianism becomes expressionism.

PANCAKES WITH DAD: Lucky Numbers, the new collaborative album between producers murk daddy flex (aka Terence Chiyezhan) and Isaak Pancake (aka Garrett Burke) is out now. I’m not much of a gusher, but dammit, this thing is good. While I’m most familiar with Delorean Gray murk daddy flex’s work and can’t really speak to the division of labor here, I can say this collaboration is a wonderful stretching of his skills, which were already significant. There’s a lot of additional instrumentation, although I suspect a lot of this was via digital manipulation. It’s a million times more aggressive than his previous work, especially on tracks like “Rehearsal Dinner” and “Rock Heaven.” Coming in lean with a mere 13 tracks is evidence of thoughtful editing and conviction of presentation, too. It’s the best mix I’ve heard lately that freely incorporates early industrial-music sensibilities with modern presentation and ideology. DESERT SONGS: New West and Normaltown Records will celebrate the release of the new album by Dega Friday, Mar. 2 at the DT Productions office (1368 Prince Ave. in the heart of Normaltown). WELL, I’M BEAT: A massive release by Apostle is out now courtesy of Star Rats Records. It’s named Shallow Graves and contains one track, which is also named “Shallow Graves.” It’s massive because its running length (nearly 18 minutes!) is positively apocalyptic, and its sound is no less so. It’s a wild, full-on journey through varying styles (’90s-ish screamo, trad hardcore, a smattering of metal) that seems to have some sort of narrative, but I can’t discern what it’s about.

It’s also exhausting. By its end, I couldn’t exactly tell what was going on, but it was clear something was. I dunno, it’s hard to say. Give it a whirl at starratsrecs. bandcamp.com.

STAY QUIET AWHILE: The UGA University Union will host a silent disco Thursday, Mar. 1 from 8–11 p.m. at the Tate Center Grand Hall. The concept, born out of necessity for late-night parties at large music festivals, has spread to standalone events and has been utilized most recently locally at select hip-hop shows. Attendees will be issued a headset upon entrance and enjoy the music of three separate DJs through the course of the night. It’s free for UGA students with their UGACard and five bucks for the general public.

BASS-O-MATIC: There’s a new track available from UGA student Luke Bass. It’s named “Mood” and is buoyed along by a nice, pretty piano melody and decorated by different studio elements and modern hip-hop and R&B flourishes. Bass writes and records his own material, which isn’t exactly a rarity, but seems to definitely explain at least part of the comfortable bedroom-studio feel of this. record review Dead Neighbors: Less (Marching Banana) Athens post-punk trio Dead Neighbors have kept their sophomore LP on the shelf for nearly a year.

While the band was busy touring and trying to find a label, its most poignant and compelling work to date has been floating just beneath the surface, waiting to emerge.

Vocalist and guitarist Sebastian Marquez describes performing in Dead Neighbors as “primal scream therapy,” and in that spirit, Less seems like a necessary emotional step. The majority of the songwriting was done in the wake of Marquez’s stepfather’s death, and the album is dedicated to his memory. Its lyrics are heavy with the frustration and fear that come with the loss of a loved one; Marquez seems to be seeking catharsis by putting his feelings on public display.

Sonically, Dead Neighbors remain anchored by a slack-rock sound that occasionally veers into the realms of emo and punk. Marquez is hardly a masterful vocalist, but his delivery feels honest and raw and is backed up by his and his bandmates’ instrumental acumen. Highlights like “Same Thing” and “No Escape” start small and (relatively) quiet before ratcheting up the tension and eventually exploding into a cacophony of sloppy and effective noise. The album’s final two tracks—the eight-minute ambient interlude “(d)” and haunting “Indifference”—bring the 30-minute therapy session to a stunning close. [Nathan Kerce]

Froggy tells them that Charlie is an exotic foreigner who doesn’t speak English—but he’s not, and he does.

The only short that might be considered unsuitable for young children due to an unsurprisingly macabre reveal, Garden Party sports the most striking animation and would be my pick for the award.

GAME NIGHT (R) The duo behind the disappointing Vacation remake, John Francis Daley (remember Sam Weir from “Freaks and Geeks”?) and Jonathan Goldstein, have provided the year’s first cinematic surprise.

Game Night is as unexpectedly fresh as comedies come nowadays.

Competitive couple Max and Annie (Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams) met cute at weekly trivia and apparently have been participating in weekly game

current. Armed with his A-game, Bateman is unbeatable, and McAdams is an appropriate soulmate. Still, Jesse Plemons practically laps the pack as the way-too-creepy cop neighbor who just wants to be included in the fun. Game Night is way better than actually playing board games with friends.

Stop Striving for Perfection ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Dear Bonita, I grew up as a competitive perfectionist who achieved a lot at an early age. I got kind of depressed at my college of 40,000-plus because I was no longer a star student/athlete/actor, and if I couldn’t be the best, I couldn’t motivate myself to work very hard at all. In grad school, I went back into overachiever mode, and despite being stressed out and anxious a good bit of the time, I viewed my experience positively, since I accomplished so much. After a nasty breakup, I worked with an amazing therapist who helped me understand that my self-worth isn’t based on achievements. I felt enlightened, I backed off the perfectionism for a bit, and my early accomplishments in my doctoral program were enough to push me through.

Fast forward to “real life,” where objectively everything is great. I have an incredible relationship, a job that pays decently, great friends and lots of hobbies. The problem is that I can’t get out of underachiever mode. Just like I did in college, I’ve gained weight, stopped working hard

(putting in five-to-six-hour workdays) and let my negative emotions leak out into most aspects of my life.

I’ve tried the middle-of-the-road approach, telling myself that moderation is the way to go, but without achievements to spur me on, I always end up falling off into laziness.

Part of me believes that perfectionism is unequivocally bad, but part of me wonders if it really is my happy place. Can I be a perfectionist and still be a good person? And if so, how do I get back into overachiever mode?

Sincerely, The Over-Under Achiever You can’t achieve perfection, because perfection is subjective, and it changes for every culture and every person. You might think that you achieved perfection in grad school, but were you a Fulbright or Rhodes scholar? Was your thesis published in a peer-reviewed journal? You might have felt perfect in that moment, but did you know that Malala Yousafzai almost died from a gunshot wound to the face when she was 15

years old, but went on to write an internationally bestselling book and win the Nobel Peace Prize by the time she was 17? She’s currently attending Oxford University, the most prestigious and respected institution of higher education in the world. Where did you go to grad school?

Sorry, but I’m trying to make a point here. You might feel perfect one day, but then a jerk like me comes along and brings up Malala. So why bother? Why not just strive for a a good life based on your own standards? Striving for perfection only serves to keep you from being happy with what you’ve already got. Perfectionists aren’t inherently bad people, but who wants a friend who’s always trying to outshine or slyly compete with them?

Adults pit children against each other in athletics and academics to score accolades for their school districts, and they don’t think about how they’re actually building an anxious adult who won’t be able to enjoy life because they’re too busy comparing them-

selves to others. Think of all the things you haven’t done and the people you haven’t connected with because they didn’t serve your goal of perfection.

That is no life to live, and now that you’re an adult, no one is judging you in that way.

Most other adults just want to be respected by their brethren; they don’t care about your GPA or if you can throw a tight spiral.

Do the things you love because you love them, not because they help you attain a mythical social status that actually doesn’t exist in this town. While you and your perfect friends are brunching, someone else is definitely making fun of everything about you.

Perfection is a fool’s errand equivalent to pushing a boulder up a hill. Life is not an episode of “Black Mirror,” and you will not be relegated to driving trash trucks because you gained weight or aren’t in a leadership position at work. Perfectionists live for the approval of others, not themselves, and the saddest part is that it’s not even necessary for living a great life. Stop it! f

Franklin for President THE NEW DEALER SPELLS OUT HOW TO REALLY MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN

By Pete McCommons editor@flagpole.com After a lifetime in the newspaper business, Millard Grimes has written a novel that reads like a compendium of every editorial he ever wrote and lays out a blueprint for how to get America back on the right track.

“I thought a novel would be more interesting to people,” Grimes says, “than just a book of essays.”

A professor of English might call The New Dealer a book of essays disguised as a novel, but however you look at it, Millard’s book distills his own New Deal views and his encyclopedic grasp of modern American political history.

Before you rush off to Avid Bookshop to buy your copy of The New Dealer, let me point out that Millard has not yet found a publisher, because he hasn’t yet been able to engage the attention of an agent. At this point, you can call this review a Flagpole exclusive. It’s possible that eventually he’ll publish on Amazon, but right now, Millard is holding out for a traditional publisher, convinced that his book has a message for all Americans.

The protagonist of The New Dealer is Thomas Alexander Franklin, a successful owner of newspapers who fervently believes that Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal saved this nation and laid the foundation for the prosperity that kicked in right after World War II and persisted until the Republicans finally gained the strength to begin dismantling the New Deal underpinnings. In other words, Franklin is a lot like Millard Grimes. He even sounds like Millard, who not only believes in the efficacy of the New Deal programs, he lived through them. Millard saw firsthand the effects of Roosevelt’s policies on Depression-era west Georgia, where he grew up and came of age.

The New Dealer is set during the American presidential election of 1992.

to first principles, i.e. the Rooseveltian solutions that truly made America great.

Consequently, Franklin sells all his newspapers and begins an independent campaign for president. He naturally believes in the efficacy of newspaper advertising, in spite of the dominance of TV, and he goes to New Hampshire and begins his campaign by driving around the state and placing ads in local papers, getting to know the publishers, with the help of his loyal and experienced driver and others who are attracted to his campaign—along with some of the old Jimmy Carter hands.

Now, here’s an interesting twist: The other candidates in the New Hampshire campaign are the real candidates who ran then: Clinton, Tsongas, Harkin, Brown, Kerrey. And Franklin is right in there with them, as a long-longshot candidate. Utilizing his knowledge of that campaign and his understanding of politics, author Grimes creates a plausible plot and a vehicle for bringing in his lifetime of political editorializing.

In truth, the novel reads like a Platonic dialogue. Franklin’s driver will, for instance, ask him a question about the economic depression of the ’30s, and the answer will be a pages-long monologue about, say, the Civilian Conservation Corps or the Works Progress Administration and what those programs did to put people to work and to shore up our crumbling infrastructure, not to mention honing skills that helped prepare our nation for World War II. Or the deficit?

“The deficit is a paper tiger, mainly used for political purposes. The U.S. has had financial challenges ever since The Revolutionary War, when there was a lot less money around. The most dramatic example was the Louisiana Purchase.

Thomas Jefferson was president, and certainly no friend of stronger central government, but he recognized that only a powerful central government with access to money from all the states could be capable of making such a deal…” and so on, at great length.

Reading The New Dealer is like riding around listening to Millard talk. He’s a liberal who made a fortune in the newspaper business during the glory days when that was still possible. He was also a newspaper owner who cared about the content in his papers and frequently wrote editorials espousing the principles of his hero, FDR. Now, at the age of 88, Millard has set it all down in this novel of ideas that really does offer an antidote to many of the ills that beset our nation and a clear alternative to the Reagan quip that the government is the problem. Read The New Dealer (and here’s hoping you get the chance—come on agents!) and you will encounter an overwhelming marshaling of history and political philosophy that will show you where we have gone off the rails and what we need to do to get our country headed in the right direction again. f
