Planning Commissioner Lucy Rowland reminded the other members that the commission’s role is to recommend and that the Mayor and Commission can consider Option B as well as Option A—should the diocese ask them to do so.

Senior Subdivision Proposed on Epps Bridge The planning commission also heard from Warnes about a proposal along Epps Bridge Parkway on 31.09 acres for a new subdivision targeted for older residents. The land is near Chestnut Grove Baptist Church and the Holly Hills subdivision, a few yards from Timothy Road. The purpose of the Thursday night meeting was simply to gather comments, both for and against the proposal.

No plans for new subdivisions have been submitted and approved, and the houses then built, in Athens since new grading regulations were adopted in 2005. Warnes said there is no senior housing available in Athens—referencing a claim contained in information compiled by Envision Athens—and that this subdivision will fill that need since Athens is touted as a great place to retire. The subdivision will create “a community” for residents 55 years old and older, though there is no legal way to prevent someone younger from purchasing one of the homes, which will sell for $300,000.

Smaller lots will mean more green space, as well walking trails and other options for passive recreation. To build as many houses as the plans indicate, developer Greg Wohl of Atlanta will need a zoning change, from RS-25, which has a density of 1.4 units per acre, to RS-8, single family residential, planned development. It comes with a density of 3.8 units per acre.

Wohl will also have to resort to mass grading and will need to address potential drainage problems.

Wohl told the planning commission that traffic along the Epps Bridge corridor will increase only 1.58 percent, a number disputed by residents already living along the corridor.

Jane Sullivan, president of the homeowners association in the St. Ives subdivision, said there’s no reason the property can’t be developed with the RS-25 zoning, which would mean fewer houses, fewer cars and fewer car trips along heavily traveled Epps Bridge Parkway. She asked the planning commission to deny the application until a full traffic study is conducted, believing the new subdivision will add substantially to what is already a traffic mess. Cars routinely are bumper-to-bumper along Timothy Road, from the Atlanta Highway to Epps Bridge, Sullivan said.

Holly Hills resident Nathan Kinion told the planning commission that the proposed subdivision will make property values fall and that the numbers about traffic are just “smoke and mirrors.”

Keisha Gant, a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist and a resident of the Jones Swanson area, said she was concerned about increases in traffic in the area, noting that few retired people in Athens can afford $300,000 houses.

Several planning commission members agreed that traffic on Epps Bridge is going to get only worse in the coming years. Hank Joiner said that perhaps traffic should be studied thoroughly because more housing projects are likely to erupt on the busy corridor.

The last business of the planning commission was to recommend approving a request for a special use permit for Pet Lab Express, a diagnostic lab on Lumpkin. The business will need to erect a screening buffer, provide better parking, install access from the sidewalk and put in permanent edging. [RM] f

The Dirt on the Bird A BATTLE SHAPING ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY IN THE WEST

By Nicole Vulcan democracyincrisiscolumn@gmail.com For those in the West, “the bird” is the greater sage-grouse, and a “listing” refers to the threat of the bird being added to the Endangered Species list.

Recent moves by Trump-appointed Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke could signal changes to the extensive work aimed at helping “the bird” across 10 western states. These were once words loaded down with angst on all sides. But by 2015 a broad bipartisan group, including conservation groups and ranchers, had created a series of Sage-Grouse Action Plans in those 10 states. Under the plans, ranchers would receive funding and support to improve sage-grouse habitat on their lands. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Land Management amended dozens of landuse plans to further enhance habitat for sage-grouse. Many described it as a winwin—“what’s good for the bird is good for the herd.”

These days, though, those stakeholders are wringing their hands once again, exploring new “what ifs” centered around Zinke’s Secretarial Order 3353, “Greater Sage-Grouse Conservation and Cooperation with Western States.” In June 2017, the Department announced the opening of a public comment period on sage-grouse plans. The idea, the Department alleged, was to “improve sage-grouse conservation by strengthening collaboration among states and the federal government.” The comment period ended Dec. 1, 2017.

Zinke, a former college football player and Navy SEAL who rides his horse around Washington, D.C., who called recent controversy over his travels by helicopter “bullshit,” and has called Hillary Clinton the “antichrist,” is in many ways the perfect Trump appointment: a macho, mineral-extraction enthusiast who has little patience for environmentalists or the implications of

the “bird” and its potential listing.

Sage-grouse are seen as an “umbrella species”—meaning when its populations are in peril, so too are more than 350 other species that share their habitat. In other words, when “the bird” is threatened, it’s a signal the entire ecosystem is threatened, too.

But it could also put numerous burdens on landowners and ranchers, and on public agencies tasked with carrying out the tenets of those protections. In some areas, a listing could bar grazing, farming, mining or other activities altogether.

Rep. Greg Walden, a Republican representing eastern Oregon in the U.S. House, applauded the reopening of the comment period. “Oregon’s ranchers and landowners have done great cooperative work to improve sage grouse habitat, and this is a chance for their firsthand knowledge to be incorporated into the planning process,” wrote Walden in an Oct. 6 release, adding that it signals a desire to work with rural communities rather than “just burdening them with rules from Washington, DC.” Dan Morse, conservation director for the Oregon Natural Desert Association, disagrees with Walden’s assessment of a topdown hierarchy. “You could not be a rancher in the eastern half of this state in the last five years and not have some knowledge that sage-grouse is declining,” Morse said.

“It’s obvious, ranchers as individuals take this serious. That’s clear,” said John O’Keefe, then-president of the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association. “The end game is to be sure we don’t have a listing, so we can continue to have the flexibility to do the projects that are going to make a difference.

The two sides are often painted as “grazing versus grouse.” But ranching may not be the biggest threat. Energy and housing were bigger threats by far. And the oil and

gas industries are big players in many of the states where stakeholders adopted sagegrouse plans in 2015.

In August, the watchdog group Western Values Project released a statement regarding a leaked document involving the oil and gas industry trade group the Western Energy Alliance. According to WVP, a memo from the WEA acted as the basis for Secretary Zinke’s current sage-grouse review. WVP says WEA made 15 recommendations to the Interior Department’s sagegrouse review team; 13 of those requests were used in Zinke’s report, according to WVP. This summer, WVP filed a Freedom of Information Act request to see correspondence between oil and gas industry representatives and Interior Department staff.

“We’re now going on our third month without a response from the Department of Interior,” Jayson O’Neill, deputy director of WVP said, noting that WVP has since filed suit for information regarding those emails.

“Now, as we’re winding down our public comment period, the public has really still been kept in the dark about why these amendments and these revisions came forward,” he said.

On the department’s appearance of caving to oil and gas lobby pressure, ONDA’S Morse said: “It’s a little disappointing frankly, that they’re so susceptible to this, and just so unsophisticated to saying yes.”

O’Neill said, “We went through 10 years of these discussions and coming to common ground, and then to have them essentially change in such a short time frame without knowing the full motivation behind that has been really troubling for a lot of folks across the West.”

Also added to the mix: the Interior Department’s October decision to withdraw the application to prevent surface mining in critical sage-grouse habitat areas. The previously proposed move to prohibit mining in certain sage-grouse areas would have limited opportunities to expand mining operations on BLM lands, as well as private lands.

“This is a clear signal from the Secretary of the Interior just how willing he is to put mining companies above the needs and wishes of Oregonians, westerners, and the farmers and ranchers he claims to support,” Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden said in a statement.

“If the sage-grouse population continues to decline, we have not done our job for that species and that ecosystem,” says ONDA’s Morse. “If that ecosystem continues to decline, the way of life—the livelihood, the economy, the people of these landscapes— are going to be hurt.” f Nicole Vulcan is editor of the Source Weekly in Bend, OR.

Washington, DC has put a curse on prominent Georgians who go there to work for Donald Trump.

First there was the case of Tom Price, the congressman who was picked to head the Department of Health and Human Services.

Price was part of the Republican leadership when the GOP took control of the Georgia Senate in 2003. He followed that with a skillful victory in the 2004 election that vaulted him into the 6th Congressional District seat. His climb up the ladder continued in the U.S. House, where he was chairman of the House Budget Committee and often mentioned as a potential candidate for speaker. Then came the call to work in the Trump Administration, which gave Price a chance to make good on his longheld wish of dismantling the Affordable Care Act. Price was brought low by his love of perks. He preferred to take private charter flights or military planes when going somewhere on official business, rather than book passage at a far cheaper rate on a commercial flight. The cost to taxpayers was steep.

When the media started looking at Price’s air travel habits, they determined he had spent about $1 million on these flights.

Trump did not like the unfavorable media coverage, and Price was soon on his way back to Roswell.

Then there was Brenda Fitzgerald, who was picked by Gov. Nathan Deal to be commissioner of the newly formed state Department of Public Health in 2011. She held that position for six years. Fitzgerald was the choice last July of Price, who at the time was still the secretary of HHS, to become the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of the most important healthcare positions in federal government.

Fitzgerald ran into roadblocks in Washington. Members of Congress raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest related to her investments in pharmaceutical and health insurance companies, which might be affected by her actions as CDC director. The killing blow was a media report last week that disclosed she had purchased stock in a tobacco company after she took over at CDC. That business holding starkly conflicts with the mission of the CDC, where smoking is considered a major public health issue that contributes to the deaths of millions of Americans. Fitzgerald turned in her resignation, which was quickly accepted.

Who will be the next Georgian to go? The most likely candidate could be Christopher Wray, who was an Atlanta lawyer when Trump picked him to replace the dismissed James Comey as FBI director. Wray is now caught in the crossfire between the White House and the Justice Department over the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into alleged links between the Trump presidential campaign and Russia.

Wray has reportedly threatened to quit over some of the White House demands, but as this column was written he was still the FBI director. But for how long?

The one Georgian who seems to be firmly in place is Sonny Perdue, the former governor who is now the agriculture secretary for the Trump Administration. When Trump delivered his State of the Union speech last week, Perdue was the chosen cabinet member who did not attend the speech in the House chamber. He was kept some distance away at an undisclosed location to ensure the continuity of the government in case there was a disaster. Maybe he can also avoid the black hole that the administration has become for Georgians in Washington. f

Hunt believes that his campaign has the ability to take on Hice, even though Hice won the Republican primary, the subsequent runoff and the general election in 2014. “When there is no better option, it comes down [to party],” he says.

Hunt is differentiating himself from Hice on social issues, coming from a center-right stance on issues ranging from the environment to abortion. Let’s Talk About Cents, Baby HOW TO TEACH YOUR KIDS THE VALUE OF MONEY

You know, the one where you squeamishly avoid certain buzzwords or obtuse details, just trying to stick with the facts so as to not confuse your kids. And different ages require different levels of details. And let’s be honest, sometimes we don’t even know how to explain things ourselves.

I know, talking about money with kids is difficult. I was startled into this conversation with my own daughter, now 10, in the aftermath of the holiday buying binge we find ourselves in each year. We were discussing the existence of Santa Claus (me: I hate to tell you this, but he’s not real; her: Of course he is!) when I found myself coming at it from the perspective of finance.

a list of causes that are important to them, and Kids Boost helps them select one to help them pursue. The child receives a $100 seed donation and then Kids Boost works with them to create a game plan for fundraising, such as asking for in-kind donations or setting up an event.

That’s what 8-year-old Taylor Forrester did. After meeting Devon Gales, a Southern University football player who became paralyzed during a UGA game, he decided he wanted to help Gales and his family. Taylor set up a fundraiser on Kids Boost and hosted a tailgate in Gales’ honor near their Gwinnett County home.

Taylor’s goal was $2,500. He ended up raising $4,000.

How does he purchase all those materials?

Does he pay his elves? What about things that say “Made in China”—did Santa pay those workers too?

Money, to someone who has no idea what an hourly wage is, can be a very abstract concept. When my daughter sets up a lemonade stand, I try to explain the cost of the materials she’s consuming.

When she wants to walk to the corner with her friend and buy a hot chocolate, I try to reinforce that this is a special treat, because $4 a day can add up. So far my efforts are failing miserably, as her “Save,” “Spend” and “Charity” banks all seem to have less money in them than when we started.

But I do know that if you can pair lessons with things kids enjoy—or, at least, embrace in their own worlds—they are more likely to understand the concept.

Which is why I was so inspired when I heard about a website called Kids Boost (kidsboost.org). It’s in the vein of a GoFundMe or Kickstarter, but specifically focused on kids and teaching them the value of money—along with helping others and achieving a larger goal.

The added bonus, says his mother, Sara, is that it’s taught Taylor the work that goes into money—and the good that can be done with it. He’s seen how money can accumulate if you save it, and how that larger sum can make an even bigger impact. “Now I think of it different because when I was littler and I needed money, I would go to the store and buy toys,” says Taylor. “but now I want to save it up.”

His new project isn’t necessarily charitable—he’s saving for a Lego Star Wars Walker—but he’s invested in the new goal because of his Kids Boost project and the relationship he’s since formed with Gales and his family. Forrester says they have set up an account for Taylor at a local bank, and as Taylor’s money jar at home gets heavy with change, he and his father will roll the coins and take it to the bank. When he makes the deposit, he can see how his money has grown.

“We try to find that balance between saving and spending,” his mother adds. “It’s just these everyday life lessons that you hope they remember.”

Just like learning the reality about Santa Claus, understanding the value of money is a lesson that can only benefit you as you grow older. f

Behind the Scenes at Kindercore Vinyl

ork is underway at Kindercore Vinyl, Athens’ new and much-ballyhooed record-manufacturing facility. The state-of-the-art plant, which is currently pressing between 4,000–5,000 records each week, plans to ramp up production in the coming months, eventually churning out a whopping 3,000 albums per day.

Though PVC is the industry standard, one of Kindercore’s owners, bioengineer Dan Geller, is currently working to research and develop a renewable replacement.

Labels bake in an oven before they are applied. They must be free of moisture; otherwise, they will tear and stick to the stamper when it is pressed. After the puck is created, a label is placed on top of it before it is stamped.

Once poured into the machine, the pellets are superheated and molded into pucks, which will then be topped with labels. Here, a mold raises to reveal a puck of hot vinyl.

Next, stampers—metal disks that contain the grooves for each song— flatten the puck. Steam from the press softens the plastic as the stampers push an impression of the album’s master recording onto it. Finally, the disc is stiffened using cool water. “Learning how to dial in the perfect temperatures, timing and PSI has been really difficult,” says Chief Operations Officer Cash Carter, “but it’s also rewarding when the record comes out sounding good.”

Pressed and trimmed records sit in stacks to cure for 24 hours. “We’re still in the learning process, and the curve has been really steep,” says Carter. “People, and I’m included, used to think that you put PVC pellets in one end and then you get trimmed and perfect-sounding records on the other, and that’s just not true. Any part of the process can make the record sound not good.”

After the records have finished curing, Kindercore inspects each one by hand before packaging them. Here, Carter inspects a record with Priscilla Lewis and her and Ryan’s daughter, Poppy. “[Kindercore is unique because] we’ve all been involved in music on the other side of things before,” says Mat Lewis. “We’ve all ordered records before, played on records, produced records… we have that insight from the customer side of things.”

Finally, records are put in sleeves with inserts. Once the sleeves are stuffed, the albums are plastic-wrapped and ready to be shipped. “My favorite part is watching them… get shipped off to the customer,” says Carter. “There’s a sense of accomplishment… I just see records differently now. Some of these albums have been worked on for 10 years, so these are people’s hopes and dreams, and we get to facilitate that for them. Whenever the records leave, they sound good and they’re going to the customer, I know that that part of their dream has been fulfilled.”

For another inebriated buddy comedy with a more hallucinatory twist, check out Terry Gilliam’s psychedelic masterpiece Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas at home.

Go Out and Watch WITHNAIL & I (1987) The George Harrisonproduced film follows the titular roommates over two weeks in 1969. Down and out due to floundering acting careers, poverty and constant drinking and drugging, Withnail (Richard E. Grant of Logan and “Game of Thrones”) and Marwood (Paul McGann, or the Eighth Doctor to “Doctor Who” fans) flee their Camden Town flat for the country home of Withnail’s closeted Uncle Monty (the Harry Potter series’ Richard Griffiths.)

During their vacation, the duo’s friendship is strained and tested as much as their livers and brains.

Seeing Withnail and Marwood interact is a compelling study in opposites. Grant’s Withnail is a volatile engine of destruction Withnail & I fueled almost exclusively by booze; when he claims that alcohol is “the only solution to this intense cold” during his stay in an unheated country house, it’s apparent that he sees it as the solution to most of his problems. Although Marwood more often than not joins his roommate on binges, his method of problem-solving is less reckless, pushing for compromise when faced with conflict.

Robinson emphasizes these differences in personality with skillfully executed two-shots used throughout the film.

These give the director the opportunity to convey Marwood’s gradual despair at his friend’s spiral into drunken dysfunction. As Withnail belligerently spins into abstract speech and behavior, we see Marwood lurking in the background, warily eyeing his companion. The roommates’ differences are so apparent that we are left to wonder what, besides their shared vocation, keeps the friendship afloat. Uncle Monty gets at the root of Withnail and Marwood’s bond when he says that his nephew is “incapable of indulging in anything but pleasure.”

Withnail’s frenzied disposition is all in pursuit of fun, and we get the sense—particularly in an infamous scene where Withnail screams for “the finest wines available to humanity” at a small-town restaurant— that all of this chaos is as fun to sow as it is to watch.

However, Withnail & I is the story of what happens when drunken fun wears on too long. Panning shots of Withnail and Marwood’s shared flat early in the film show a cluttered hovel. The worst of it all is their kitchen, packed with piles of dirty dishes and spattered with unnamed fluids.

The part of their home most associated with nourishment is toxic, foreshadowing the gradual deterioration their habits inflict on their bodies and, ultimately, their mismatched friendship.

Stay Home And Watch FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (1998) The relationship between self-proclaimed “doctor of journalism” Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp, in an era when the viewing public could tell itself that he was only an abusive creep onscreen) and his Samoan lawyer, Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro), in Fear and Loathing is actively harmful to anyone unlucky enough to cross their path. We first

see them barreling down a desert highway in a convertible. Gilliam shoots them from the driver’s side with a camera that bobs and weaves, struggling to keep pace with their craziness. Despite their freewheeling lunacy, Gilliam’s protagonists are bound together by the suitcase full of “uppers, downers, screamers, laughers” and more in their trunk.

The film is an ontological horror story, exploring the beastly tendencies that the characters’ imbibing unleashes. This danger is explored in a literal sense, as the duo and the people they encounter while covering events in Las Vegas morph into animals and demons with the ebb and flow of chemicals.

After waking from a particularly hazy binge in a trashed hotel room filled with puddles and wallpapered with mustard-covered porn, Duke strides the room with a reptile tail strapped to his body trailing him.

Gilliam’s use of practical effects for this tail and other scenes, including a particularly horrifying lizard orgy earlier in the film, makes the existential terror that much more potent. CGI would make the fantastic scenes appear distinctly separate from reality. By giving a physical grounding to these hallucinations, the threat of an inhuman transformation is realer and more immediate, amplifying the visceral thrill of Gilliam’s trippy triumph. f

The Dead Zone THREE FORGETTABLE FLICKS OUT NOW

FERDINAND (PG) It has been widely noted that 2017 was not bursting with unforgettable animated features. Subsequent viewings of Coco continue to affirm it is really great, though not in Pixar’s top five; when The Boss Baby vies for best animated feature, the pickings must be slim. Ferdinand, based on the classic children’s book written by Munro Leaf (and illustrated by Robert Lawson), is the right source material from which to craft an animated gem, and the result is exactly what one would expect from the director of Ice Age and Rio, Carlos Saldanha.

Ferdinand is pleasant and will make children laugh while leaving adults underwhelmed but not unamused. In Leaf’s story, Ferdinand is a bull who would rather smell flowers than fight. His overt pacifism in the ring leads to his being left happily alone in his flower-filled fields. Leaf wrote that story in 1936. Making it into an animated feature in 2017 means casting likable professional wrestler John Cena to voice Ferdinand, who still loves flowers, but now he loves flowers to the tunes of Nick Jonas while trying to save some other bulls—voiced by Anthony Anderson, Bobby Cannavale, David Tennant and Peyton Manning (?!)—from the slaughterhouse, here called the Chop House. At least Ferdinand’s mentor is a crazy, Kate McKinnon goat.

Naturally, comic relief exists in the dueling trios of animals, dancing hedgehogs and prancing Lipizzans. None of this has anything to do with Leaf’s innocent tale, but is practically required for a modern animated feature. The story of Ferdinand remains sweet, but the movie is far from timeless. f

Hard Times, Strange Folks and Easy Laughs CATCH DETROIT AND BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS ON LOCAL STAGES THIS MONTH

By Dina Canup arts@flagpole.com We all have our ways of coping in times of trouble and economic uncertainty, including, but not limited to: fretting, fighting, dreaming, lusting, joking, drinking or all of the above. Then there’s the stress of trying to figure out who you are in the world, which doesn’t end with adolescence.

Between Town & Gown Players and UGA Theatre, audiences get all this and more, from the Great Depression (Brighton Beach Memoirs) to the Great Recession (Detroit).

Families confront unemployment, relationships gone wrong, fantasies not yet realized and dreams gone sour—by two award-winning American playwrights who are experts at family dialogue.

a middle class existence. The promise of a white picket fence for grit and hard work may just be a myth, and not just for them; what happens to them could happen to us.

Sure, it will at times be uncomfortable, even disturbing, but it comes with the sort of absurd comedy that works in painful times. You can love these characters with all their annoying flaws intact while accepting them as a caution-

DETROIT: In this case, Detroit is a state of mind rather than the literal location. It’s the idea of a once-great American city, ripe with economic promise and job growth, now in various states of stagnation and decline.

Once upon a time, the youthful avatars of the American Dream expected to exceed their parents’ success with every generation, but the future no longer seems so bright in the age of increasing economic inequality. The characters of UGA Theatre’s Detroit could be any of us, anywhere, financially struggling and still wrestling with the question: “So what are you going to be when you grow up?”

We ponder this throughout our childhood. College students are frequently asked, “What’s your major?”

BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS: It’s an American standard by one of our most popular playwrights, Neil Simon, master of snappy one-liners and self-deprecating characters. As with many of his plays, it’s semi-autobiographical, so these are characters he knows quite well. Set in a Brooklyn neighborhood in 1937, the comedy has a backdrop of economic uncertainty and fear for distant Jewish relatives living under the Nazi regime behind the family squabbles.

The central character is teenager Eugene (Jack Dugan), in his coming-of-age story that Ben Brantley of The New York Times describes as, like so many of Simon’s plays, “retrospective wish fulfillment, transforming his often fraught childhood into sunny domestic harbors in which troubles only brought families closer and father really did know best.” Jack (Jim Nuss) is the head of a rather crowded house, with his wife’s (Mir Kamin) widowed sister Blanche (Ginny Simmons) moving in when she has money troubles.

Add her teenage daughters (Antonella Perez Ferrero and Jessica Tiegs) and Eugene’s older brother Stanley (Andrew Rabanal), and things get too close for comfort.

If you prefer a family that balances out the drama with love and laughter while avoiding deeper darkness, this is the show for you. While the 2009 revival on Broadway was a surprise commercial flop despite critical praise, Patrick Healy wrote that it had less to do with the production than it had to do with evolution in American humor and what Broadway audiences are willing to pay big money to see (for example, the production had no big stars and it wasn’t a musical). It’s a better show for local and regional theaters, where there’s always a place for classic plays and quippy dialogue that can appeal to wider audiences. Town & Gown, which produces quality theater for a variety of tastes, should provide a welcome chance to laugh away your worries with a strong cast of favorites and newcomers, directed by longtime T&G member Hue Henry.

Resonance and Typo-poetry AUGMENTING ART WITH AUDIO AND TYPE

By Jessica Smith arts@flagpole.com Imagine being able to hear the symphony of chirps emitting from small birds that surround a woman in an oil painting—the “Bird Tamer” by Bob Clements—or the rallying call of “We are the 99 percent” being chanted from an unusual fishbowl full of expressive ceramic faces—“Sounds for Uprising” by Cheri Wranosky. “Resonance: A Bi-Sensory Art Exhibit,” co-curated by local artists Melody Croft and Jackie Dorsey, makes it all possible by pairing each piece of art with audio, elevating the visual stories through complementary songs, sound effects, poetry, storytelling, speeches and news clips. Currently on view at the Oconee Cultural Arts Center, visitors are encouraged to spend more time fully absorbing and reflecting on each image by using their phones to scan QR codes that link to recordings.

The concept of the exhibition, which originally sought to combine poetry and images, evolved out of Croft’s own body of work, which often incorporates collage-like text into oil paintings to emphasize impactful messages. Her previous exhibition, “Sixteen Stories,” held at the Oconee County Library a year ago, took these narratives even further by posting background explanations for each painting on Tumblr and in person.

paired with a recording of a 1960s commercial to hint at the impact of the beauty industry’s ads on the self-image of young girls. “The Pacificists,” a 6-by-9-foot hexaptych of babies with pacifiers, is combined with children speaking about peace.

“Music enhances the viewing of visual artwork just like a soundtrack enhances a film,” says Croft. “Mary Ann Cox has a beautiful watercolor in the show of an older woman, entitled ‘Flossie.’ Listening to the opening overture of To Kill a Mockingbird that has been paired with the painting kindles the emotion that the artist feels about Flossie. The orchestrated work chosen by Claire Clements creates atmosphere and implies a sense of space as you look at her landscape of the R.E.M. trestle.”

A few artists excitingly had original songs composed for their work—Lucy Bone, Kristin Hyink and Manda McKay—and the exhibition also includes visual work by Margaret Agner, John Ahee, Ryan Dorsey, Denise Sanbria and Viviane Van Giesen. Jackie Dorsey contributes five exquisitely photorealistic portraits of musicians—each accompanied by one of their own songs—Gregg Allman, Michael Coast of the Grassland String Band, Pip the Pansy, violinist Adam Poulin and Sienna Chandler of Monsoon.

“In my own case it adds to the story of the painting because it shows another dimension of my subject: his or her own art,” says Dorsey. “But it also is a way of sharing a little more of me and my process. I paint what I love. I not only get to share the subject with my audience, but also the music that moves me and draws me to them. It is another level of intimacy between me, the subject of my painting, and the viewer experiencing the work.”

By Hillary Brown food@flagpole.com ADVENTURES: I promise y’all that, even if you don’t believe me, a good story can start out with “In a gas station in Winder.” A couple of years ago, that meant Pho & Deli, a Hmong restaurant attached to a Valero station. This time, it refers to Doughnut World (235 N. Broad St., in Winder, 404-839-6818), a wonderful little doughnut retailer next to a Shell station near the middle of Winder that appears to be run by a Cambodian family.

A friend of mine who works in Winder told me it’s the talk of the town there, and that’s totally fair. Whether or not you’d drive to Winder for the doughnuts depends on A: where you live, B: how much you like driving, and C:

energy drinks, both Coke and Pepsi, bear claws, ice cream, cream horns, occasional breakfast burritos and probably some other things I missed. It is, in short, a gem, and its prices are low and its staff super nice. Doughnut World is open from 5 a.m. until at least early evening every day (although it appears to extend its hours to 10 p.m. sometimes).

how much you like doughnuts. Your mileage may vary, but the answer is not a hard no, and it seems that the store has recently come to an agreement with Savvy Cakes, in Statham (which is a bit closer to Athens), to carry its wares.

Doughnut World is fairly sizable, considering its location, with plenty of open floor space and several arcade games against the wall. A sign on the window reads, “You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy donuts and that’s kind of the same thing.” Rather than specializing in crazy toppings, it goes for mostly classic preparations, with both cake and yeast-raised doughnuts. The former edge out the latter, as is the case at most bakeries, because it’s hard to keep a yeast-raised doughnut light when it’s sitting around for a while, unless you’re Krispy Kreme. You can get blueberry, red velvet, chocolate or sour cream cake doughnuts, as well as other flavors, depending on the day, all of which are tasty. Better still are the fritters, including one labeled as “Hawaiian” that seems to include pineapple and pecans.

If you’re going yeast-raised, you will be impressed with the glazes, including a maple-bacon that tastes like actual bacon (not sad stuff from a jar) and actual maple syrup. Doughnut World also has kolaches, a Czech-via-Texas sweet-and-savory combination that wraps your choice of cheese, sausage and/or jalapeno in a puffy, slightly sweet doughnut, making it a rarity in the area. If you’re lucky, you may also be handed a complimentary bag of doughnut holes.

Want bubble tea or a smoothie with your doughnuts, in flavors from pumpkin spice to red bean? It has those, too, plus biscuits, croissandwiches, coffee, a wide selection of

moved in quickly, despite the fact that it’s mere feet from Bulldawg Pizza. It’s an improvement on its predecessor in the space in that it appears to know how a restaurant should work, but it’s also not nearly as interesting.

The pizza is totally fine, available with a wide variety of toppings and in specialty combinations including gyro (lamb, feta, tomato), Levanzo (anchovies, tomatoes, red onions) and shrimp alfredo. It’s of the Little Caesars/ Hungry Howie’s genre rather than being New York style, with a thicker, seasoned crust and smaller slices, which is to say it sort of tastes like chain pizza. The interior of the place is still fairly spartan, but the owners have built a pretty decent website that allows you to order online for pick-up or delivery.

Don’t like pizza? You can also get a fairly substantial baked ziti as well as some other pasta dishes, wings, calzones, salads, subs, breadsticks, fried mushrooms, french fries, calamari (because why not?), meatballs, chicken tenders, tiramisu, baklava, cheesecake and chocolate cake.

Is it exciting? Not really, but it’s also not bad. Athens Pizza is open from 11 a.m. every day. The earliest it stops doing business is at 11:45 p.m. on Sundays.

My Job Is Killing Me (Literally) ADVICE FOR ATHENS’ LOOSE AND LOVELORN

By Bonita Applebum advice@flagpole.com Hey Bonita, I work in a very specific setting that I don’t want to name, but within that setting is the risk of danger to staff. I’m new to this type of work, but I did take the job understanding that I could be physically hurt at work. I’ve recently been put in a situation that directly threatens my safety (via another person—it’s a hospital, I’ll say that much), and I’m not dealing with it well at all! I’m actually writing this letter at my desk, on the verge of tears. I want to do well at my job, but I don’t want to be physically attacked. The thought of getting hurt at work is turning out to be too much for me.

What do I do?

You’re not an asshole, you just know what you like. You have your own standard of cleanliness and you like your veggies crispy.

Talk to your supervisor, or more specifically, someone who has been working in your environment for a long time. I imagine you work in some type of psychiatric or mental health setting, and I believe you when you say you’re at risk and it’s terrifying for you. It takes a special type of person to provide medical care while under threat of attack, but I’m sure these providers don’t show up on their first day ready to tackle an unruly patient. You gotta work up some nerve, I’d suppose.

And you said that you’re new to this kind of job, so go talk to some workplace veterans about their early days and how they got where they are now in managing the stress of their work environment. Is there support staff available to accompany you into stressful environments? Try to have someone present with you when you can, someone who’s practiced at the scarier aspects of your job and will step in if you freeze up.

I also want to tell you to take it easy on yourself and give yourself room to grow into your new job. You’re new, and no one is expecting you to be Patch Adams just yet. Do your best, but don’t expect miracles out of yourself. Your fears and concerns are justified, and you will manage your way through them, just like your coworkers have.

My husband is great. He likes to carry his weight in our home and routinely cooks and cleans without being asked. Here’s the problem: He’s terrible at it! Half-swept floors, dishes covered in fingerprints and dried food, and no attention paid to detail. Also, I don’t really like his cooking! He uses ingredients that I don’t care for, and he overcooks vegetables to mush. But he does all this without asking, so I’m an asshole, right?

But your boo doesn’t share your standards, even though he is performing his husbandly duties in X-Game mode. That’s a tough nut to crack: If you speak up and correct him, does that mean you don’t appreciate his contributions? If you don’t say anything, are you prepared to eat mushy vegetables and drink out of dirty glasses until eternity?

I had a roommate who seriously never washed our dishes with soap (left food and grease on everything all the time), but he moved out, and I don’t have to think about him anymore. This, however, is your husband. I assume y’all wanna be together forever, so you’re gonna have to nip this in the bud.

I say that you just start cooking and cleaning with him. Not all the time—you wouldn’t want him to get too comfortable—but sharing these chores occasionally would give you the opportunity to provide direction and help y’all to create shared norms for your household. Cook dinner with him, and explain to him why mushy vegetables are less nutritious than firmly cooked ones. Wash dishes together, but let him do the actual washing, and be vocal when a dirty dish makes it into the drying rack.

Seriously, y’all, how are so many of us making it into adulthood without knowing how to wash a dish? f

Singer-songwriter Joe Willey has been an active participant in Athens music since the 1980s, and is known for his work with The Ale Raisers, among other groups. With the Movin’ Men—a trio that features Five Eight’s Dan Horowitz and The Welfare Liners’ John Evans—Willey recently released The Toll, a sprightly, sure-footed Americana record that should appeal to fans of folk sages like John Prine. The group celebrates the album’s arrival with a show at Hendershot’s on Friday, where it will be joined by guests Claire Campbell, Jamie DeRevere and Jason Cade to perform music from the LP. Rich Rusk Made Our World Better SO DID PETER APPEL AND BARRY HOLLANDER

We drove the van down to Crawford every Wednesday night and loaded it up with freshly printed newspapers. But before we could do that, we had to assemble the various sections, inserting them into each other. For that job, we took a crew of “inserters,” who rode with us in the back of the van. One night there was a kid who introduced himself as Rich Rusk. He was down from Alaska visitANDY RUSK

Here’s part of what Rich’s son Andy wrote in his father’s obituary.

“While working for the [Oconee] Arrow, Rich first learned of the mass lynching at Moore’s Ford Bridge and, inspired by the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, launched a movement to investigate the crime, commemorate the victims, and bring healing to the community. The Moore’s Ford Memorial Committee would attract national attention to this forgotten atrocity, re-open the GBI case, and establish a scholarship fund for children in Clarke, Oconee, and Walton counties…

“Rich became active with the Oconee River Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Georgia Climate Change Coalition. He survived a near-fatal staph infection.
