Changes Coming to Downtown?

PLUS, ATHENS TRANSIT, NEW CANDIDATES AND MORE LOCAL NEWS

By Blake Aued news@flagpole.com Athens-Clarke County commissioners are considering a number of changes aimed at reducing binge drinking and overcrowding downtown, from preventing bars from clustering together to banning glass beer bottles.

ACC Manager Blaine Williams presented commissioners with a set of recommendations at a Jan. 9 work session that came out of a $90,000 downtown health and safety study. Among them: The commission or another body would vet applicants for licenses to serve alcohol, rather than issue those licenses by right. One recommendation is to make restaurants and bars that exceed a maximum occupancy of 100 people a “special use,” which would give the commission the power to make sure that such establishments aren’t too close to each other, presenting a fire hazard—similar to the way the government regulates fraternity and sorority houses on Milledge Avenue, Planning Director Brad Griffin said.

Another would let the government look at how often a bar has been charged with serving a minor or other violations when renewing alcohol licenses.

“Hopefully, it’s not so much a punishment as encouraging compliance throughout the year,” Williams said.

The recommendation to ban glass beer (but not wine or liquor) bottles drew quite a bit of discussion, with most commissioners leaning toward incentivizing the sale of cans rather than an outright ban on bottles.

“We just have a really hard time handling the glass downtown,” Williams said. “It’s heavy. It breaks. People get cut. It’s not the [most valuable] commodity for recycling.”

Commissioner (and noted beer lover) Andy Herod objected to a ban, saying he prefers the taste of beer in a bottle, and that many beers don’t come in cans.

Commissioner Jared Bailey, though, said

the 40 Watt Club stopped selling bottles when he owned it. “If a bar wants to do it, there are ways to do it,” Bailey said. “It can be done.”

More broadly, officials are also revisiting how trash is collected downtown. Because the area lacks alleys where businesses could store receptacles, and health regulations prevent restaurants from keeping them inside, they generally place bags on the sidewalk, where they’re continuously picked up by sanitation workers in specialized trucks—but not always before they start to leak. “We’re at a juncture where we have to make some decisions on trash,” Solid Waste Director Suki Janssen said. “We can’t put it off any longer.”

The idea of “environmental stations”— often derided as “trash corrals”—met with a less than enthusiastic response from commissioners in 2013, but now they’re ready to revisit it. During the upcoming Clayton Street project, the fenced-in areas for businesses’ trash cans could be tied in directly to the sewer line, making it easier to keep them clean, Janssen said, and Commissioner Mike Hamby suggested that they could be decorated by local artists.

An alternative would be to tell businesses to bring their trash bags to a central location at certain times after lunch and after bars close, where an automated truck could pick them up. But with the Clayton Street’s center lane set to be removed, Janssen said she thinks loading zones on side streets will be too busy.

A more extreme solution: Put the trash corrals underground. That’s what Kissimmee, FL, does, Janssen said, but it would be expensive, requiring the purchase of special equipment that’s only available in Kissimmee.

in a development to 25 percent to encourage housing other than student housing; requiring training for servers on alcohol laws; revisiting the sidewalk cafe ordinance so that the additional sidewalk space on Clayton isn’t eaten up by cafes; building a public toilet, perhaps in a parking deck; and raising the minimum drink price from $1 to $2.

Although the study prompted a lot of discussion about issues facing downtown, several commissioners said they wished it had dealt with panhandling, and others said they were unhappy with the $90,000 expense. “I don’t think it was worth the money we paid for it,” Commissioner Sharyn Dickerson said. “It didn’t tell us much that staff didn’t already know.”

Study Maps Out Transit Expansion It will all depend on how much money commissioners want to spend, but they have a blueprint for expanding Athens Transit in Athens in the form of a study they were briefed on at last week’s work session.

Over the next five years, the study recommends revamping routes 5, 6 and 7 (Baxter Street, Atlanta Highway and Prince Avenue) and adding service to Martin Luther King Jr. Five to 10 years out, it recommends changes to routes 8 and 9 (Barber/Chase and Five Points), extending service further down Atlanta Highway (to Caterpillar), Lumpkin Street and Milledge Avenue, an Eastside flex route, higher frequency on routes 5, 7, 9, 25 and 26 and transfer stations on Atlanta Highway, at the corner of Baxter and Alps Road and the Corner of Lexington and Gaines School roads.

By 2033, the study recommends adding frequency to other routes and extending service to Epps Bridge Parkway in Oconee County. (Commissioners have resisted that last idea in the past because they don’t want to make it easier for people to spend money over the county line.)

“The bus to Epps Bridge Parkway?

Really?” Commissioner Jerry NeSmith said.

“People want that,” said Commissioner Melissa Link. “They really do.”

“We’re not doing it,” Herod said, flatly.

“I don’t see us going out to Epps Bridge Parkway unless we already have service to everyone in our county,” Dickerson added.

And that won’t be happening, even 15 years from now.

Winfield Runs for Congress Richard Dien Winfield has the Bernie Sanders thing down pat, from the poofy white hair and wire-rimmed glasses to the New York roots to the cartoon logo. It’s actually Chalis Montgomery, though, who’s running for Congress on the Sanders platform of a $15 minimum wage and Medicare for all. Winfield has something even more ambitious—and much further to the left— in mind.

The University of Georgia philosophy professor formally entered the race against U.S. Rep. Jody Hice on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Miriam Moore Community Center in East Athens. He’s been running unofficially for months, but delayed an announcement until now because UGA rules require that employees who run for state or federal office take a leave of absence from their jobs. That gave Montgomery—a Barrow County music teacher with a bit of charisma and a compelling personal story about her daughter falling ill with a chronic disease just as her husband lost his job—a head start in the Democratic primary. Winfield isn’t an inspirational speaker by any means, but he hopes to spread his ideas by running for political office and win on the strength of those ideas. He has already drawn national media interest in the form of a profile in The Nation last week.

He is running, essentially, on one big idea that he views as a cure-all for virtually everything ailing this nation: a guaranteed job for everyone, courtesy of the U.S. government, starting at $20 an hour and indexed to both inflation and productivity gains. “Anyone who wants to work can be assured of having a job with a fair wage and dignity,” he said.

Although unemployment is currently at 4.1 percent (most economists consider 5 percent to be full employment), Winfield sees several benefits to a New Deal-style government jobs program. It will staunch the rise in inequality and eliminate the

fear of joblessness, which he blames for the hatred of immigrants and minorities in the Trump era and the rise of ethnic white nationalism both in the U.S. and around the globe. And it would pressure the private sector into raising wages when companies are competing with government for workers, rather than workers competing for jobs.

Workers would never again be afraid to leave their jobs, veterans would know a job is waiting for them when their service ends, undocumented immigrants could come out of the shadows, businesses would benefit from increased consumer spending, and poverty would become a thing of the past.

Under Winfield’s plan, workers would be employed repairing and building new infrastructure (schools, public transit, broadband internet and affordable housing),

“Obviously, I’ve been doing my homework for a long time,” said Eubanks, who’s been advocating for better planning and alternative transportation on Prince Avenue for 20 years. “There’s a lot of need for nuance, there’s a lot of need for give and take, and for cooperation.”

in free child- and elder-care facilities, and teaching and performing arts and music.

Although President Franklin D. Roosevelt died before he could implement a guaranteed jobs program, it’s similar to the Works Progress Administration and other New Deal programs.

“The market can never be relied upon to provide full employment,” Winfield said.

“The government has to step in when the market fails.”

And fail it has, according to Winfield: The top 10 percent has as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent, 70 percent of Americans have less than $700 in the bank, and 25 percent of Americans have zero or negative assets, he said.

Winfield also proposed a free singlepayer health care system (with no copays or deductibles, unlike Medicare or Medicaid), free access to legal representation, nine months of paid parental leave and tuitionfree public colleges and universities. All of this would be paid for by taxing the top 1–2 percent, he said.

Sound pie-in-the-sky? Sure. Jim Barksdale, the 2016 U.S. Senate nominee who introduced Winfield, warned the audience of about 100 that he’d be labeled an “impractical idealist.” So were Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesus, Barksdale said.

“My message for you, Richard, and everyone here is don’t believe it,” he said.

Eubanks and Link have long agreed on policy but disagreed on strategy. For example, where Link complained loudly about the inclusion of Walmart in the proposed Selig development downtown, Eubanks focused on trying to influence the design for the better. Two years later, in 2014, Eubanks switched his support from Rachel Watkins to Link late in the commission race but now has come to regret it.

The last straw, Eubanks said, was when Link essentially drew up a plan to reconfigure Chase Street on the fly and wound up neglecting to identify a funding source and upsetting businesses north of the Loop who weren’t consulted and whose trucks had to sit through traffic back-ups at rush hour.

The commission needs to expand its committee system and hold hearings to improve public input, Eubanks said.

He sees himself as a behind-the-scenes guy, as opposed to the vocal Link. An example he gave was his work on the Athens in Motion bicycle/pedestrian plan, which will result in a much improved Complete Streets policy. He also said he’d like to expand the Neighborhood Notification Initiative (emails about developments in neighborhoods) to eventually become full-fledged neighborhood planning units, organize the Hancock Corridor neighborhood and to revise setbacks to prevent developments like the Milledge Avenue Best Western. f

Deal Eases Out of Office IF NOT A LAME DUCK, HE’S GLIDING TO THE END OF HIS TERM

By Tom Crawford tcrawford@gareport.com As they near the end of their last term, Georgia’s governors usually start running out of gas. By that time, they have finished working on most of their major policy goals—and if they haven’t, there is little chance they’ll get it done during that last 11 or 12 months in office. There’s a name for it: lame-duck governors.

Those tendencies were on display with Nathan Deal last week as he and the General Assembly moved into the final regular session of his tenure as governor.

Deal had a couple of major speeches to deliver, including the annual “State of the State” address to a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

This is the big speech where a governor tries to paint a grand vision for the future of the state and fire up lawmakers to help him put the finishing touches on that big picture.

We didn’t hear any of that from Deal.

He devoted his speeches to looking back at what had been done during his first seven years, not what he might want do in his last year. There were no grand visions here.

Deal wants to spend $25 million to upgrade some rural airports, but that’s not going to get many people excited outside of those rural communities that will see their runways lengthened.

He’s creating a new deputy commissioner position in the Technical College System to coordinate the state’s economic development activities, but that’s not anything that’ll put you in the history books.

He will allocate $22.9 million to implement the recommendations of a special commission he appointed to look at mental health services for children. That’s a worthy project, of course, but it is not exactly what you build a legacy around.

And that was pretty much it. Deal either recognizes that there isn’t much he could

persuade an election-year legislature to do, or at the age of 75, he is ready to slow down and take it easy for a while.

The biggest achievement that might happen this year—and there’s no guarantee of it—is that the retail giant Amazon would put Georgia on its shortlist of locations under consideration for the construction of a second corporate headquarters. If that should come to pass, Deal said he would gladly call a special session of the General Assembly for lawmakers to approve even more financial goodies on top of the $1 billion or so that the state is already willing to throw at Amazon to entice them here.

Deal urged legislators to take it easy and wait until then. “Let me assure you that if Georgia makes the list of final three contenders for HQ2, I will call a special session so that we can make whatever statutory changes are required to accommodate a business opportunity of this magnitude,” Deal said. “To do so before we know where we stand would be presumptuous on our part and premature.”.

In other words, the governor seemed to be saying, take it easy and don’t do any heavy lifting until you really have to. That could easily serve as a motto for his last year in office.

Deal did make a token effort to leave the impression that he is fully engaged as he hits that glide path to retirement in North Georgia. In an appearance before the Georgia Chamber, he gamely avowed that “there is nothing lame about this duck.”

But his words gave him away. There was little in any of his speeches to suggest that Georgians should look for big things coming out of this administration in its final months. Deal may not be a lame duck, but he definitely looks like a duck who’s scouting for a place to land. f

Checking In With the #Resistance Athens Groups Keeping Fighting Trump, One Year Later

In

late 2016, two congressional aides, despairing of Donald Trump’s election, launched Indivisible, a movement designed to provide frustrated progressives with specific measures to push back against anticipated changes in the political environment.

They prepared a playbook of actions of resistance, inspired in great part by the dogged work they observed from the tea party starting in 2010, and posted it online.

The guide was an instant success and has been downloaded more than 3 million times, according to the Indivisible website. The movement exploded almost immediately, and thousands of chapters were formed across the country, made up of individuals who weren’t content to confine their indignation to anguished social media posts.

They wanted instead to act, and these actions have led to some startling victories over the past year.

Around the time of Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, 2017, three Indivisible-inspired groups formed in Athens.

There are currently two active groups, Indivisible Georgia District 10 and Together We Will. A third group, Indivisible Athens, formed by Barrow County resident Dawn Johnson, disbanded when she decided to run against state Sen. Frank Ginn (R-Danielsville). These groups have hundreds of active members who are resisting the administration daily through phone calls, meetings, public protests and postcard mailings.

Probably the most significant contribution the two groups made was to encourage higher-than-usual voter turnout for the November special elections for Athens-area state representatives in Districts 119 and 117, both previously held by Republicans who hadn’t been challenged in years. Democrats Jonathan Wallace and Deborah Gonzalez earned upset victories in both districts, energizing the local members of Indivisible.

Let’s take a look at what else these groups have been up to this year, and what they are planning for 2018.

Indivisible Georgia District 10 diligently follows the Indivisible playbook, and its 754 members work hard to fulfill specific goals of encouraging voters to go the polls and

communicating with local and national representatives. Its members record their activities in online logs and appear regularly en masse at public protests, including town-hall meetings held by the staffs of Sens. Johnny Isakson and David Perdue and Rep. Jody Hice.

Members of this group skew toward middle-aged professional women who “have had careers that give them a real depth of experience,” according to Jacqueline Elsner, who founded the group with Toni Reed in early 2017. “[Our members] have personal skills of facilitating small groups and significant political experience,” Elsner says.

That experience helped the group record hundreds of phone calls, postcards and faxes to lawmakers urging them to vote “no” on legislation like repealing the Affordable Care Act. Writers sent letters to the editor to local papers. The

group led dozens of its vocal members to attend a town-hall meeting held by aides to Hice and Perdue, who abandoned the meeting format to allow the demonstrating audience to take over with a series of angry and poignant speeches by Indivisible members and others.

In November, just prior to the Federal Communication Commission’s ruling on net neutrality, dozens of Indivisible members demonstrated in front of the Verizon store on Epps Bridge Parkway. (FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is a former Verizon executive.) They also held monthly meetings, and invited Wallace, Democratic congressional candidate Chalis Montgomery and other candidates from both sides of the aisle to speak to the group. Many of the group’s activities are posted on its Facebook page.

With more than 1,500 local members, Together We Will is also affiliated with Indivisible and employs that group’s

playbook of direct outreach to state and national legislators and other strategies.

This group was founded and is led by Carina McGeehin, who responded to the national organization’s suggestion for groups in blue states to partner up with teams located in “blue dots surrounded by a sea of red,” says McGeehin.

She reached out to Together We Will’s partner chapter in Palo Alto, CA, whose nearly 3,300 members contributed to several campaigns. “It’s a fantastic partnership,” McGeehin says. “They [felt] helpless and frustrated to watch what was happening in other states, so they decided to partner up to help our cause.”

Together We Will is a registered Indivisible group that emerged from Pantsuit Nation, a pro-Hillary Clinton group that formed just before last year’s election. The agile group responded quickly to outside events with well-attended protests. Its members have demonstrated against the recent campus carry legislation, organized a local event the day after the Charlottesville, VA protests and showed up for the local March for Science last spring. They also held postcard-writing events at Hi-Lo Lounge, where members sent out more than 500 postcards in support of Doug Jones’ successful campaign to be Alabama’s first Democratic senator in more than 20 years.

“While one of our main objectives is to say ‘no’ and resist the administration, we are also trying to build structures for the future as well,” McGeehin says. “We are offering other solutions and keeping an eye on the horizon.”

The group’s activities encouraged Wallace to run in a right-leaning district where Democrats had not run a candidate since 2011. Wallace says that not only did he get significant support from these energized groups, but “[Indivisible’s] work… fostered an environment where I felt I should run. They did some groundwork… identifying issues that made the path easier for me to run. The issues they are championing are vital to all our civic interests.”

Both those state House races, plus Hice’s 10th Congressional District seat and two local state Senate seats, will be on the ballot again this November. Can Indivisible members, energized by their successes in 2017, keep up the momentum? f

Truth be told, the O.B. thinks that Republican insiders are probably as relieved as they are disappointed by Moore’s defeat, and that the GOP may actually fare better across the board next November because of it. There is the matter of a lost vote in the Senate, but ol’ Roy gives good reason to suspect that he would be more readily swayed by the exhortations of Habakkuk than the entreaties of Mitch McConnell.

Beyond that, however, the vision of the Roy Boy in the U.S. Senate immediately evokes the old question of what Lester Maddox had in common with a monkey climbing a pole—the answer being that the higher he went, the more he showed his ass. Given that Moore did a middling-to-fair job of doing that well beyond the beltway down in Alabama, it surely taxes the powers of the most creative among us to imagine the level of tomfoolery to which the largest political stage in the world might inspire him.

Beyond his repeated attempts to repeal the

Thirteenth Amendment, there would also be the yearly embarrassment of his showing up in his trench coat for the White House Easter Egg Roll. All of this is to say that the Dems might not have picked up as much momentum last month in Alabama as they would like to think.

The same may be true with the passage of the “monumental, brazen theft from the American middle class” that Nancy Pelosi says is the new Republican tax bill. The new tax structure may be all that, but will this be obvious to most voters by November, when tax forms are yet to be confronted?

On the other hand, a lot of workers will soon be noting somewhat plumper paychecks, owing to lower tax withholdings.

Even those who have actually taken time to understand the ramifications of the new law may not see cause for alarm in the short run. Couples earning $100,000 and filing jointly will owe the I.R.S. $3,000 less. It’s true enough that another couple earning $1 million will save more than eight times that amount, but the O.B. reckons that, historically, at least, lower-income voters are less likely to rise up against the “swells” getting more swollen when they see their own circumstances improving at least a little.

There are also several wild cards in this bill whose influence is simply too contingent on too many factors to estimate their consequences in advance. The muchdebated capping of the state and local tax, or SALT, deduction at $10,000 is certainly one of these. The greater anticipated impact on residents of supposedly higher-tax blue states suggests this is intended as a “soak the liberals” provision, but the O.B. will tell you right now that this notion can be misleading. The combination of a 6 percent income tax, plus a 4 percent sales tax with local add-ons running the total rate up to 7 or 8 percent, and relatively high property taxes in more desirable locales, means this baby ain’t by any means toothless here in still-red Georgia, and its bite stands to be felt most in the ’burbs, where the Dems seem to have their best chance of winning over Trump-disaffected Repubs. Here again, though, there is the matter of how apparent the downside of this policy change will be by next November, and besides that, preaching economic self-interest in the suburbs will take establishment Democrats several light years beyond their comfort zone.

The O.B. doesn’t need the gift of prophecy to flatly assure you that the almost certain consequences of this Republican tax plan are as follows: A severe revenue shortfall will lead to a grotesquely bloated deficit, which will, in turn, elicit, as if on cue, angry calls to cut expensive frills like Medicare and Social Security. (Pause here for a Reaganera flashback, if you need to.) This is a traditional bedrock issue for the Democrats, but it’s not quite so immediate or compelling in the suburbs, where, at this juncture, their recruitment prospects seem brightest.

While the current polls showing D.J.T.’s widespread unpopularity (Can you imagine that?) and the potentially toxic spillover effect for his party offer calls for Democratic optimism, whether that optimism is borne out depends in large measure on how they interpret the forces that seem to be pushing the pendulum back in their direction. The victory in Alabama was not a vindication of their party, its current leadership or its perceived philosophy. Rather, it was a rejection, and by a durn slender margin at that, of an opposition candidate so vile that even an extra-dense effusion of high-concentrate Bible-thumpin,’ gun-totin’ mumbo-jumbo could not conceal the distinct odor of roadkill. There might be one or two people who couldn’t bring themselves to vote for Roy who now wish they could’ve brought themselves to vote for Hillary, but the O.B. bets that’s about the size of it.

The sense of Republican blood in the water seems to have set off a feeding frenzy of wannabe Democratic standard-bearers for 2018, but in sorting through them, party chieftains and rank-and-file alike should steer clear of overbearing liberal ideologues and load up on as many boring centrists as they can find. Regardless of what the polls may tell you about the partisan ramifications of Donald Trump’s abysmal approval ratings going forward, following the same approach that failed to keep him out of the White House last year is not going to put you in control of Congress next year. f

By Lauren Baggett news@flagpole.com Farming is hard work. Running a successful farm without taking shortcuts that sacrifice the health of the land or integrity of the product is even harder, but it’s the balance our local farmers face on a daily basis.

For new or beginning farmers, or for farmers lacking financial or social support, that balance can be very hard to find. In one effort to provide a guiding hand, the Athens Land Trust is hosting its second annual Sustainable Agriculture Conference in February to equip these farmers with the knowledge they need to thrive.

With thousands of small and community farmers working in and around Clarke County who need assistance, this event is important, says the land trust’s executive director, Heather Benham. “Historically, much of the information about resources for farmers wasn’t being widely shared to all types of farmers,” she says. “Knowledge is power, so having the information about

“Decisions on these small farms are made locally in ways that benefit local communities,” she says.

As this column has reported, new and beginning farmers face a number of financial challenges when they’re first getting started, and many look to other local farms for help. Another draw for conference attendees is the opportunity to build a mentor network and develop an ongoing support system.

The bulk of the workshops will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Oconee County Civic Center, but attendees can opt in to a farm tour on Friday, where they’ll have a chance to see and ask questions about the operations at the land trust’s two farms, UGArden and UGA Organic Farm.

The Athens Land Trust is familiar with the dedication it takes to grow sustainably and naturally grown produce, managing the 5-acre Williams Farm and West Broad Market Garden, as well as supplying some food for Clarke County schools year-round.

Benham believes that community farms are integral to the local and state economies, and they also play a role in maintaining stable economic opportunities for people living in rural areas. “Small farms are a way to create employment opportunities and economic development in areas of the state that are often struggling,” she says.

On Saturday, following a panel discussion about the current state of Georgia’s small farm economy, attendees will participate in one of four tracks: conservation and land ownership, composting and farm safety certification, farm business development or sustainable agriculture The conference offers something for everyone—for the person who is thinking about transitioning into farming or the farmer who needs a leg up. The key takeaways center around the culture of sustainable agriculture and how to leverage the resources around them, says Benham.

“They will learn about the power of sustainable agricultural systems, the economics of local spending, the building of local communities and reversing the rural/urban drift,” she says. “They will also have access to information on all the resources that exist to help small farmers succeed.”

Hitchcock’s set—part of Camper Van Beethoven’s annual three-day Camp-In— will feature songs from his entire career, performed solo and with a band featuring Elf Power’s Andrew Rieger, Peter Alvanos, Davey Wrathgabar and Matt Garrison.

This is the first time Elf Power and Hitchcock have shared the stage, but Rieger’s admiration for Hitchcock’s songwriting runs deep. As far back as 1994, Elf Power has performed a cover of “Surgery,” from Hitchcock’s acclaimed 1985 live recording, Gotta Let This Hen Out!.

“We are huge fans of his,” Rieger says.

“The chord changes and arrangements always offer something unexpected, and lyrically he’s great at mixing direct, emotional lines with abstract, surreal imagery, often within the same verse. He also possesses the rare gift of being able to inject a bit of humor into a song, without coming off as silly or jokey.”

Hitchcock’s eccentricities dive headlong into nostalgia in “Raymond on the Wires,” a eulogy for his father, novelist and screenwriter Raymond Hitchcock. Through it all, his reverence for life and death is powerfully affecting, so much so that this selftitled album is as much about Hitchcock as it is a lament for those who have influenced him, human or otherwise.

“That is exactly what I was hoping to achieve, especially after I signed to a record label and started releasing pop music,” she says. “I felt like I was a secret agent, working in the pop industry as an undercover healer.”

hen Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ well-intentioned song about gay rights, “Same Love,” dropped in 2012, it introduced a broad audience to the immense vocal talents of Mary Lambert. The popular song’s lyrics evoke Lambert’s discovery of self-love through accepting her lesbian identity. Such honesty became par for the course as Lambert used her heightened profile and personality as a self-professed “chronic oversharer” to teach fans necessary lessons about confronting their vulnerabilities and accepting perceived faults. She continues that mission into 2018, while plotting new ways to share her varied talents.

“When I started doing pop music, I knew I wanted to do pop music with subversive social messaging,” Lambert says. “I was hearing all these pop songs where their heart was in the right place. Like, ‘Just love yourself and everything will be OK,’ you know? I thought, ‘That’s great. That’s really well-intentioned, but what about some real shit? How about really addressing these things instead of putting a bow on it and calling it self-care?’ The missing thing in all of those narratives was the lens wasn’t turned on the artist or writer.”

Before embracing her current role as a pop singer, Lambert explored how self-reflection connected performers and audiences through spoken word and poetry readings in her hometown of Seattle. Blending that style of selfexpression with uptempo dance songs and piano-based confessionals on such releases as her 2017 EP Bold allowed her to craft something rare in this day and age: authentic

awkward self-discovery. Through songs such as the internaldialogue-driven “Lay Your Head Down,” Lambert aims to make fans feel less alone in a turbulent world.

“A lot of my fans are going through shit,” she says.

“These messages to them, whether I’m talking about mental illness or body image or sexual assault, are issues that affect them in a very real way.”

Although her pop aim is true, Lambert is already plotting a change in direction. “I feel like my pop chapter is coming to an end,” she says. “I want to be creating and

releasing music that’s the most authentic I can possibly be, and sometimes that means releasing dark, sad music.”

Lambert sees the music she’s preparing for a future album as a means to better use her bachelor’s degree in music composition from Seattle’s Cornish College of the Arts.

“I haven’t had a chance to show or work with [those skills],” she says. “This next album has more orchestral elements and a lot more spoken word. I’m talking sometimes very abrasively, sometimes very shockingly about trauma.

And a lot of it is me and a piano. It’s like going back to my roots.”

As Lambert readies her new sound for public consumption, she’s currently touring with just her guitarist, performing stripped-down versions of her pop material in intimate settings like the Caledonia Lounge. And whatever post-tour twists and turns Lambert throws her listeners, they can rest assured that she’ll keep writing deeply personal, shockingly honest lyrics. After all, that’s the only way an oversharer can write songs, make money and still sleep at night.

“Before ‘Same Love,’ I got asked to write a worship song for my church,” she says. “For me, when I’m writing music, I feel a divine connection with God. For me, that’s a really sacred process. I sat down to write this worship song. I wrote something and I felt awful about it, because it felt so contrived. There’s a ‘South Park’ episode where they decide to start a Christian band, and they replace every use of the word ‘baby’ with ‘Jesus.’ They make a lot of money and they do really well, but they feel bad about it afterwards. That’s kind of how I felt.” f

Significantly, this entire album is a practice in positivity, which it seems he might have struggled with a bit after his last album. Although he reached an artistic peak and the album was praised, not the least in this very column, he didn’t exactly know how to “top” it. Eventually, he let the fear of this go and made an album that celebrates early-’90s hip hop, personal achievement in spite of setbacks and negativity, and relishing one’s own personality. Stylistically, it’s slowly and steadily paced, straddling a line between West Coast G-rap and, say, Philadelphiastyle slow jams. Grab it at dakidsqualle. bandcamp.com.

CLEAR THE DECKS: Although Rollin’ Home is self-described as a “Southern rock/ Americana” band, you’d never nail this 100 percent from the freshly unearthed album Apalachee. Originally recorded in 2011 by “original members”—whom I don’t know and, consequently, have no idea how the lineup has changed—it was finally released late last month. It’s easy to hear certain influences, like the occasional Skynyrd-ish

STACKS O’TRACKS: Mover, shaker and hiphop/soul impresario Akeeme Martin just released the first compilation for his Onyx Echelon 85 Enterprises. It’s titled The Family Tree: The Compilation Vol. 1. As such, those appearing on it are either within his current stable of artists, part of related projects and/or reach back to his days as host of WUOG’s “Halftime Hip Hop Show.”

With only two exceptions, the compilation features musicians only from Athens and Atlanta, and it does a good job of showcasing Martin’s breadth of taste between hip hop and R&B. Featured artists include Lex Callahan, Y.O.D, Cinematic, Hannah Washington, Milyssa Rose, Zale, Profound, Stella Groove and more. All proceeds from sales benefit Nuçi’s Space. FIVE FOR FIGHTING: The Athens artist dubbed Chainsaw Art released an EP named EP right at the close of the year (aka the dead zone), but I’m glad I didn’t miss it. The notes say it was written and recorded “during panic attacks, nervous breakdowns and bouts of depression,” which probably describes 8 billion records out there, but at least this one is good, featuring five tracks of well-crafted, downbeat keyboard-pop that could’ve been tossed off very quickly but weren’t. There’s a nice amount of care to these songs, as evidenced by the multiple instrumental tracks, layered vocals, etc.

It’s a Small World SEE LISA FREEMAN’S ‘REPERCUSSIONS’ AT OCAF

After years of identifying primarily as a painter, Freeman began shifting into collage and assemblage as her dominant medium.

Keeping up with the cost of painting supplies had become difficult, and serious injuries from a car accident resulted in chronic pain in her wrists and arms. Already experienced at finding interesting “this will be good for something one day” objects, she began putting her collection of old photographs, trinkets and other miscellaneous treasures to good use.

“The more I worked with cast-off objects, the more my mind was opened to different ways of seeing seemingly ordinary material.

The first miniature world I made was a game changer for me,” says Freeman. “I was able to use a vintage photo of a little boy I have had since I was a child. The image was obtained at an antique store with my parents. They went antiquing frequently and would bring home old furniture and other pieces with past lives.

With this first miniature world, I had created a possible realm for an unknown face, and I was hooked.”

His recent album Poor David’s Almanack finds him working in unison once again with Welch and other members of the David Rawlings Machine. This folk collective finds new ways to interpret old songs about common people’s faith and fears. Album highlight “Cumberland Gap” retools an Appalachian folk song recorded in the 1920s by two of Georgia’s earliest country stars, Gid Tanner and Riley Puckett. This go-around, Rawlings’ nasal vocal delivery and signature flatpicking guitar method take center stage, making the album different enough from all the great releases bearing Welch’s name. The performers, outside of Henson, struggle; Danny Glover seems less to be playing a character than appearing as himself. Proud Mary really needs a strong antagonist, but it kills off its best candidates, Xander Berkeley and Neal McDonough, way too early. However, Mary is not that strong of a protagonist; most of her strength comes directly from Henson, who gives way more than this paycheck flick deserves. Proud Mary better not be too proud to beg for the cable television audience it will soon command, and most of them will probably be changing the channel at the first commercial break.
